Experience Snellville: 16 years of serving the community

Experience Snellville is beginning its 16th full year of serving the local community. We are excited to offer a wide variety of events and activities to the citizens of Snellville and promoting our great city to others that may want to visit or relocate to our great city. We are so proud to continue to produce the Snellville Spirit magazine in order for everyone in the community to know a little bit more about what is available in Snellville.

While preparing for the upcoming 2025 event season, I began to reflect on our name “Experience Snellville”. Each of us have our own unique life “experiences” and circumstances that have shaped who we are today. There are more people in Snellville today that bring many different cultural and life experiences and perspectives than ever before. Our events offer an incredible opportunity to bring together our collective experiences to weave a vibrant and strong community culture.

My hope for the 2025 Experience Snellville event season is that every citizen comes out and participates in the community at one or more of our great events. In doing so, I hope you take the time to meet and get to know your neighbors so together, with all our unique life experience, we can make our community a better place that we can all be proud to call home.

A great way to get to know your neighbors is to volunteer at one or more of our great events. If you want to find out more information on opportunities to serve in our community, contact us through our website ExperienceSnellville.com.

Mayor’s Message - Mayor Barbara Bender

Just as the flowers and trees are blooming, so too are some major projects in the city that I am excited to share with you.

The long-term master plan for T.W. Briscoe Park included a community recreation center building to allow for indoor sports and leisure activities. We are very excited that after twenty years of dreaming, planning and talking, construction is set to start on May 5th. This new building will be right behind the current park offices and visible from Lenora Church Road. The current park office building will stay in place and be available to remodel at some point in the future. (See page 14 for a rendering.)

Next up is the intersection improvement at North Road and Wisteria Drive. There will be a dedicated right-turn lane for Wisteria Drive turning right onto North Road. When traveling south on North Road, there will be a much longer turn lane for cars turning left onto Wisteria Drive. Any road construction project is hard to live through and this one will not be any different. The intersection will stay open, however there will be intermittent lane closures and construction traffic. Please plan your routes to avoid this area and watch the city social media and website for updates.

Snellville Public Works

Deadline approaches for Recycle and Second Trash Cart Program

The City of Snellville Recycle and Second Trash Cart Program is a yearly subscription-based service that runs from May 1 to April 30 of each year. The program is optional.

Sign up for the service ends April 30 with service starting on May 1 each year. Service is tied to the address and is not transferable or refundable. Service is limited to one sign up per address. The service is only available to residents of the City of Snellville.

Check eligibility by entering your address on our website at www.snellville.org/am-i-city to verify you live within the city limits. Then, click to complete the online enrollment and pay by credit card. Sign ups can also be completed in person at the Public Works Department located at 2491 Marigold Road. If paying with cash or check, service sign up must be completed in person.

Residents that miss the March 1 through April 30 sign up window are eligible to sign up throughout the year.

The Grove restaurants are all now under construction for interior buildouts with openings expected this year. Crooked Can Brewery is moving quickly toward completion with opening tentatively planned in the May-June time frame. The splash pad is set to open soon, and other weekly programming will be starting as the weather warms up. Watch for coming information on the next cornhole league.

On a final note, The Grove development has been awarded the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Best in Atlanta Real Estate Award for a Mixed-Use project. With Mid-City Real Estate Partners, Casto, Gwinnett County and the City of Snellville working together, this is a public-private partnership that has exceeded our expectations for the start of the downtown redevelopment area.

Snellville Police Department

The Snellville Police Department strives to create a bond with the community it serves. To that end, officers are constantly in the community, building relationships with residents, young and old alike. Here are a few recent community-building endeavors as well as an introduction to new officers.

Officers met with families in the community for a time of fun and dialog, while handing out donuts and bottled water. Sgt. Smith is pictured handing out doughnuts.

Officers visit with Exceptional Futures members at Church on Main event for special needs young adults.

Ofc. Hermel and Sgt. Smith celebrated with a local author who published his first book. Nazir Encarnacion, a Brookwood High School graduate, wrote a children’s book entitled “Nazir has a Superpower.” The book can be found on Amazon.com.

Ofc. Hermel and Cpl. Tran taught a class on personal and home safety to members of the Active Adult Center.

Snellville Farmers’ Market

New market vendors bring variety, dietary options

March certainly lived up to its reputation, arriving fiercely and departing gently, signaling the arrival of spring. We can all breathe a sigh of relief as we bid farewell to Old Man Winter for another year, as this season packed a real punch especially for our farmers and growers. Thank you to all our dedicated vendors, volunteers and customers who persevered through the harsh cold, gusty and wet conditions this past season; your loyalty and commitment are truly commendable.

As we prepare for the upcoming warm weather markets, we are pleased to welcome back our veteran vendors and equally delighted to introduce new ones to our market family.

We are excited to introduce two new gluten-free vendors to our community. First up is Caryn Price, the visionary behind Gluten Free Haven. Her personal experience with Celiac disease has driven her to create a brand that prioritizes both health and the joy of eating. With a passion for culinary arts and a deep understanding of gluten-free living, Caryn has crafted an impressive selection of delicious and safe gluten-free mixes, including cornbread, muffins, cookies, cakes, and spices.

Next, we have Danielle Jones from Danie Bakes Bakery, who specializes in both vegan and gluten-free desserts. Danielle’s offerings are sure to please, featuring vegan pound cake, cupcakes, fruit cobbler, pies, and an array of flavored gluten-free cakes that will satisfy any sweet tooth.

Sisu Florals redefines the conventional floral experience. Under the vision of founder and designer Kay Abikoye, who’s mission is to ensure everyone experiences the beauty and wonder of florals by curating an artistic moment while prioritizing sustainability In keeping with tradition, Kay provides locally sourced fresh cut flower arrangements, hand-tied bouquets, flower crowns and dried flowers. For those eager to unleash their creativity, the innovative bloom bar empowers guests to personalize their experience by handpicking their own flowers and creating a dried or fresh bouquet.

Karen and Thomas Waycaster, the creative minds behind WaycasterCo Creations, skillfully juggle their responsibilities as both parents and artisans. They provide an extensive selection of bath and body care products, featuring cold process bar soap, facial cleansers, clay masks, mineral sunscreen, lip butter, body butter,

lotions, oils, natural deodorants, shampoo and conditioner bars, hair serums, aromatherapy items, and wax melts.

We are excited to announce that several vendors who joined us for our extended season market will be returning for the summer season.

Chef Ron and Tierra King aka Ronnie Tei’s Catering is a husband-and-wife duo, who have over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry. Chef Ron’s passion for cooking started at a young age, inspired by watching his mother create some of the heartiest dishes. Each market, Ronnie Tei’s will serve up a rotating selection of tasty dishes, sides, salads and desserts. Their motto, “Food that makes your belly smile” reflects their belief that food brings people together.

Next up, meet Chef Daja Dennis and Eloise Reid, a motherdaughter duo known for their exquisite Jamaican American cuisine. For Eloise, growing up in Jamaica was more than just cooking; it was about family gatherings filled with laughter, stories, and love, reflected in shared meals. She continued this tradition with her children, so it was no surprise when Daja chose to pursue a career as a chef. Daja graduated from Johnson and Wales University with a dual culinary arts and marketing degree. This dynamic duo brings Jamaica’s rich and bold flavors to your taste buds. Be sure to visit the O.A.K. Fresh tent to enjoy delicious soups, chili, and sauces.

Also making their first summer season market debut is Cristan Neculea with Sausage World, a family owned and operated business, specializing in freshly crafted artisan sausages that blend locally sourced beef, pork, lamb, and poultry with all-natural herbs and spices. Offering a variety of authentic traditional American, European, Central and South American style sausages, which are higher in protein, lower in fat to meet the demands of today’s consumers.

Finally, we have Bruce and Rebecca Bowen, the talented owners and artisans behind Georgia Pecan Toffee, who are making their summer market debut. Be sure to stop by and taste their delicious, handcrafted toffee made with locally sourced ingredients, featuring South Georgia pecans and chocolate from an Atlanta chocolatier. They offer a variety of flavors, including original pecan toffee, spicy, and peach.

The summer season market will begin on June 7 and will be held every Saturday, 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on the Towne Green thru Sept. 27.

In the meantime, you can visit our extended season market on the first and third Saturday of each month through May, 9 a.m. until noon, in the City Hall parking lot. To subscribe to our newsletter, please visit our website at www.snellvillefarmersmarket.com.

100 year olds reflect on life, friendship at AAC

EDITOR’S NOTE: The last names of the women featured in the article have been withheld at the request of their families.

Maxine and Helen share a lot in common – the love of family, faith and the card game bridge. They are also both 100 years old.

The two have been friends for two decades, meeting at the Snellville Active Adult Center, bonding over bridge.

“Being the same age, we share many things and know how the world has changed,” Maxine said.

“I’ve known her for several years through bridge,” Helen said. “I always enjoy her beautiful smile when I enter the bridge room. She is a true lady.”

Maxine was born Feb. 16, 1925, in Racine, Wisc. She moved to Atlanta at 48 years old when her husband was transferred. She had two children. She lost her son 10 years ago and still lives one mile from her daughter. She worked for 15 years as a private secretary, raised her children for 18 years and returned to the workforce selling real estate for 25 years.

“We have so many things to make life easier,” she said. “Many people did not have the indoor plumbing or electricity. Everyone was really patriotic and loved our country.”

What’s her secret to her longevity?

“I have never smoked or drank,” she said. “I ate good food and rested a lot. Be grateful for what you have. Enjoy your life with good friends and family.”

Helen was born April 12, 1925 in Kentucky. She’s lived in West Virginia, Florida and finally Georgia for the past 78 years. Her marriage of 50 years produced six children, one who lives in South Carolina, the rest in Georgia.

Helen worked as a waitress, then as a “Rosie the Riveter” at a defense plant in Kentucky. She worked in administration at military hospitals in Kentucky, West Virginia and Georgia and was a medical secretary at Emory for more than 30 years.

“I lived on a farm until I was 17 and we had no electricity,” she said, adding she wants to be remembered for her “friendliness and positive attitude.”

“I have been blessed in so many ways,” she said. “God has protected me and looked after me. Without Him, I would have

not made it this far and in this good health.”

What advice does she have for the youth of America?

“What I’ve said my whole life which is, ‘Don’t worry. Worrying solves nothing. Instead, trust in God.’”

AAC Director Kathi Gargiulo said she is pleased the ladies’ friendship has remained strong over bridge games at AAC, which now has more than 800 members. she said it is important for older members of society to stay sharp and social with activities like bridge.

“It’s really important for us to offer, not only physical exercise and fun events, but something to keep our minds challenged like bridge, especially since it’s a memory card game,” she said. “This, along with the social aspect that comes with it, is a winning combination for everyone.”

Benefits of playing bridge, according to AARP

•Improves memory: Bridge can improve short-term and long-term memory.

•Develops logical thinking: Bridge can help develop logical thinking, inferential analysis, and problem solving skills.

•Improves reasoning: Research has shown that bridge players outperform non-players in measures of reasoning.

•Stimulates the brain; Bridge can stimulate the brain, especially in areas used for memory, visualization, and sequencing.

•Improves mental sharpness: Bridge can help maintain mental sharpness in older people.

•Social interaction: Bridge is a social game that can help players meet new people and make new friends.

Creek named after beloved resident Nelson Williams

A creek in the city has been renamed to honor the legacy of a beloved resident.

Nelson Williams, who most notably served on City Council and Downtown Development Authority, will have a creek named after him that runs near the Greenway Trail behind Northside Medical Center.

Williams Creek flows east, then southeast to Big Haynes Creek.

“My dad, Nelson Williams, was a native of Snellville and he and my mother, Marilyn, were lifelong residents,” said Williams’ daughter Kathy Bass. “He was active in community affairs in Snellville and served on the City Council as well as many committees during the years. He loved his city and seldom missed a council meeting and was an active advocate for residents of Snellville. Our family is pleased with this recognition of his many hours of volunteer service to the residents of the City of Snellville.”

Williams died in August of 2018. He was 85. He also served on Urban Redevelopment Agency and the Development Authority of Snellville.

The naming of the creek was administered by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. The BGN is a federal body created in 1890 and established in its present form by Public Law in 1947 to maintain uniform geographic name usage throughout the Federal Government, according to federal documents. The BGN comprises representatives of federal agencies concerned with geographic information, population, ecology, and management of public lands. Sharing its responsibilities with the Secretary of the Interior, the BGN promulgates official geographic feature names with locative attributes as well as principles, policies, and procedures governing the use of domestic names, foreign names, Antarctic names, and undersea feature names.

Parks and Recreation receives USTA tennis award

Snellville Parks and Recreation received the Outstanding Parks and Recreation Award from the United States Tennis Association for its service and outstanding accomplishments in our tennis community throughout 2024.

A reception for the award was held on Feb. 8 at the USTA Georgia Community Tennis Development Workshop in Atlanta.

Since 2020, SPRD has been working on growing its tennis programs and community outreach to generate interest in tennis at Briscoe Park. SPRD partnered with Anthony Evans of Advantage Evans Tennis to begin tennis instruction at the park and to offer more tennis options for children and adults. Now more than 300 players utilize the courts at the park. Tennis services include lessons, clinics, tournaments, league play, flex leagues, camps for children and home to USTA and the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association, Inc. players.

For more information on tennis at Briscoe Park visit snellville.org/parks-recreation/tennis-0.

An $11.3 million contract was approved by Mayor and Council to build a new Community/Recreation Center at T.W. Briscoe Park. The center will be approximately 34,000 square feet and will house two basketball courts, an indoor walking track, an outdoor pavilion, two multi-purpose activity rooms and one aerobics room. The project will be located near the current park office. The funding comes from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds with an additional $900,000 awarded from the Community Development Block Grant program. Place Services, Inc. will build the new center. Construction is expected to begin in May. Check Snellville.org or the city’s Facebook page to get construction updates.

Two Special Days, One Shared Celebration A Reflection on Mother’s and Father’s Day

Both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are about more than just gifts or celebrations. They are a reminder to cherish the time we have with our parents, loved ones, and those who sacrificed the time to help mold us. It’s a time to reflect on their impact on our lives, to honor the countless ways they contribute to our growth and happiness. These days also encourage us to think about the bonds we share with those who have cared for us and helped shape us into who we are today.

Mother’s Day is May 11, 2025 and we encourage everyone to remember that special someone who may have given you life and nurtured you with endless love, or it may be a person who is not a biological mother, but someone who was there for you for the long haul and believed in you. Mothers, grandmothers, and

maternal figures are near and dear to our heart. Time spent with those you love means more than any gift you could ever buy.

Father’s Day is on June 15, 2025 and is a time to honor and thank the fathers, father-in-laws, grandfathers, and all father figures who guided and supported us through life. Father’s Day is a reminder of the roles of protection, wisdom, and mentorship that fathers provide. Take the time to reflect on the sacrifices and the way they help shape our character, values, and future.

Remember, every day is a gift, make the best of each day and take the time to share your love and support with those you love. Time does not wait for any of us, when it passes us by, it is gone forever. Makethebestofeverymoment!

Local student wins 3M nationwide science contest, $25,000

Snellville student Sirish Subash recently received a proclamation for winning the 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier science competition for grades 5-8.

The one-of-a-kind video competition sparked the imaginations of hundreds of thousands of students and enhanced science exploration, innovation, and communication across the U.S.

In October 2024, the ten contest finalists went to 3M’s world headquarters in Saint Paul, Minn., to compete for the title of America’s Top Young Scientist and the chance to win $25,000.

Throughout the two-day event, finalists competed in hands-on challenges, met with 3M scientists, learned about 3M technologies, and finally, showcased their inventions and solutions to solve everyday problems that landed them a spot as a top ten finalist.

Sirish, a student at Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology, won the competition and the grand prize by creating a method to detect pesticide residue on consumable produce using an AI based handheld detector.

The proclamation was presented by Mayor Barbara Bender.

Celebrating 102 Years

Snellville man celebrates

102nd birthday

James L. Davis celebrated his 102nd birthday in style with a proclamation from Snellville and Gwinnett County officials.

Tod Warner read the proclamation for Davis at the birthday breakfast celebration at The Diner on March 30. The county was represented by Commissioner Jasper Watkins.

Born to Ruby Williams and J B Davis on March 31,1923 in Lexington, MS, James grew up in St. Louis, MO. He became a member of the Paramount Golf Club in 1939, the first black golf club west of the Mississippi.

He was drafted in 1943 into the U.S. Army to fight in WWII. He fought in Saipan, in the Pacific and obtained the rank of Sergeant, with numerous awards and medals. James was sent for training

to Jungle Nair Camp, in Hawaii, where he trained all soldiers heading to the War in the Pacific. He was Honorably Discharged on Jan. 18, 1946 and returned to Jefferson Barracks, MO

James was broadly recognized for his leadership in bringing fair housing for black residents, in St. Louis, MO, during the Civil Rights Movement.

He worked for General Cables, the leading manufacturer of electrical wires for companies until his retirement in 1962.

“Therefore, I, Barbara Bender, Mayor of the City of Snellville, Georgia, Where Everybody’s Proud to be Somebody, do hereby join with our City Council and the Citizens of Snellville to honor the 102nd Birthday of James L. Community Garden @ Snellville

Emerging and thriving at Snellville Community Garden

This winter was particularly harsh, demanding significant effort to safeguard our precious seedlings from the elements.

Our dedicated greenhouse gardening team worked tirelessly to create the ideal environment for our plants to grow and thrive in time for the Annual Spring Plant Sale held on March 15 which proved to be a huge success. As in previous years, several flats of baby vegetable plants containing lettuce, broccoli, arugula, bok choi, and spinach remained after the sale.

Thanks to Kim Fritz at the Gwinnett County Extension Office in Lawrenceville and her network of teachers, these plants were donated to the County Public School Garden Program, benefiting Partee Elementary, Starling Elementary, Grayson Elementary, Lovin Elementary, McKendree Elementary, and the Give West School. We received a heartfelt thank-you note from the Extension Office.

With spring comes the annual clean up to prepare the garden for the growing season. This year volunteer gardeners turned out in record numbers for our first of the year Saturday Workday on March 8. With so many eager hands, we were able to accomplish a good bit of sprucing up, including pruning rose bushes, tidying and weeding the pollinator garden, pavilion, and front gate entrance. To finish things up, we distributed a substantial amount of mulch across the entire treated areas. A special thank you to David Mitchell, director of Public Works, for the generous donation of some much-needed mulch. We also extend our sincere appreciation to Rob Stewart for his dedicated work in installing outlets and ensuring the irrigation system functions smoothly within the greenhouse. Furthermore, we are immensely grateful to Terry Kori and his son Shannon for their outstanding efforts in repairing and reconstructing several of our garden beds that required significant attention.

Thank you to all who participated, the garden is shaping up nicely for the growing season, and we’re excited for a bountiful harvest ahead!

We are thrilled to announce that, due to the outstanding reputation of our community garden, all of our raised beds for the gardening year from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026, are fully occupied.

Where Everybody’s Proud to be Somebody

Brookwood High School

Making waves: the Rovie duo helps lead Brookwood to state championship

In the world of high school athletics, few moments are as special as winning a state championship. Even fewer are the programs that can claim the rare feat of sweeping both the boys and girls titles in the same year. In fact, it has only happened five times. For Brookwood High School, it’s a remarkable accomplishment they’ve now achieved three times - a testament to the school’s powerhouse swimming legacy. But this year, the team’s victory had an extra layer of meaning, thanks to the unique bond between assistant coach Eric Rovie and a senior swimmer on the championship squad, his daughter Cate.

For the Rovies, the state meet was more than just the culmination of months of grueling training. It was the fulfillment of years spent side by side in the pool. Together, they helped guide the Brookwood Broncos to their place in the record books, adding another chapter to the program’s storied history.

Eric Rovie previously coached track and cross country at Collins Hill and Brookwood, eventually coaching his older daughter Jillian in both sports. In 2021, Cate’s freshman year, Eric began coaching Brookwood Swim & Dive. Cate had started swimming at age 4 in a neighborhood summer league, moving to club swim just a couple years later. She swam competitively for both her club and Brookwood all four years of high school.

“I would have been in the stands watching her from a distance,” he said. “Instead, I’m down there on deck. For good and for bad, like when she’d have bad days or bad swims or whatever, I was there to comfort her.”

When asked what it is like having her dad as her coach, Cate said, “It’s really special because I know not a lot of kids get to experience it. He’s not just a coach that only saw me through high school. He’s watched me evolve as a swimmer, from literally not being able to swim to being fifth in the state. Not every kid gets to have those touching moments on deck.”

So what does it take to make a championship team? Brookwood is unique in that approximately two thirds of their swimmers train year round with a local club team. Regardless of whether the swimmers train outside or with the Brookwood coaches, they all swim five to six days a week. The team also has dry land training to improve their strength and flexibility.

In addition to the training and practices, Brookwood Swim and Dive also has traditions to bond as a team. Pre-meet pasta dinners and uniform glitter and face paint help build the camaraderie, fostering an environment where the athletes want to not only become the best version of themselves, but also contribute to the overall success of their team.

At state this year, the Brookwood Girls came in as defending state champions. After taking an early lead, they never trailed. The Brookwood Boys knew they also had a shot at the title, but they would have to fight hard against some very strong competition. By about halfway through the meet, however, they knew that Brookwood was going to get the sweep.

Brookwood Swim and Dive is consistently the largest team in the county. Out of the approximately 115 swimmers on the team this year, 51 qualified for state. The staff of head coach Willie Hildebrand and assistants Rovie, Jim Reason, and Brad Callahan were just named Coaching Staff of the Year by the Georgia High School Swim Coaches Association. The team also includes several other standout swimmers: Baylor Stanton (6A Athlete of the Year and 200 IM & 100 Back State Champ), Nicole Amike (50 Free & 100 Free State Champ), Hailey Dopson (100 Back State Champ), and Collier Stanton (500 Free State Champ).

What’s next for the Rovies? Cate will be trying her hand at discus this spring on the Brookwood Track and Field team, with her dad alongside her as coach.

Focus on the Arts

Cobble Creek Studios celebrating 15 years of art education

We’re excited to use this issue’s Focus on the Arts to zoom in on a Snellville tradition that celebrates its 15th anniversary this year! Nestled right in the heart of Snellville, Cobble Creek Studios has been a vibrant hub of creativity and artistic expression since 2010. This beloved atelier offers drawing and painting classes catering to all ages—from five to ninety-five. Cobble Creek Studios is more than just a place to create art; it is a nurturing community dedicated to celebrating artistic growth and connection.

At Cobble Creek Studios, students delve into the principles of art while enjoying engaging lessons in art history. Guided by professional artists, participants explore various methods and techniques drawn from the practices of the great masters. The studio’s commitment to fostering understanding and appreciation of art makes it an ideal environment for budding artists seeking inspiration and guidance. Classes for children and teens are a particularly important aspect of their offerings, aiming to build confidence and self-expression through the joy of art.

During a recent visit, Experience Snellville observed the Wallace and Gromit sculpture display. Students joyfully engaged in a hands-on project where they built an armature piece under clay while learning about claymation, inspired by the iconic British characters Wallace and Gromit. This imaginative project exemplifies the studio’s dedication to blending traditional artistry with contemporary techniques, making art both fun and accessible.

In addition to its educational programs, Cobble Creek Studios is deeply committed to engaging with the wider community. The studio regularly hosts art exhibitions and events that showcase local talent, providing artists with a platform to display their works while bringing the Snellville community together to celebrate creativity. The bright, airy space is adorned with works created by students and local artists, inspiring creativity the moment you walk through the door.

As Cobble Creek Studios continues to thrive, it remains focused on its mission to build a community centered on art, connection, and growth. Whether you’re an artist seeking a space to create, a parent looking for creative enrichment for your child, or an art lover wanting to immerse yourself in the local art scene, Cobble Creek Studios is a welcoming destination that invites you to explore and embrace the beauty of the arts and the studio warmly invites you to become part of the Cobble Creek family. For more information, visit their website at www.csaa.net.

Snellville Spirit is looking for additional arts programs and local artists to spotlight in our Focus on the Arts! Are you a painter, potter, dancer, or actor?
