Mayor’s Message - Mayor Barbara Bender
I am sure you have all seen the news regarding the two unrelated shooting incidents at T.W. Briscoe Park. While two arrests have been made in the May 31 event where four teens were shot, we are still asking for your help. Parents, please talk with your kids and encourage anyone with information to call Snellville Police at 770-985-3555.
As a result of these incidents, we are implementing changes at the park to include more police patrols, on-site security, improved lighting and cameras. Snellville has always been a safe place, and we will do our absolute best to prevent such happenings in the future. However, we live in a high-tension environment right now. We all need to stand together to quickly respond to any situation that seems to be escalating and to call police as soon as possible when something does not seem right.
The City Council has resisted reinstating the user fee for as long as possible, not wanting to add to citizens’ burden during the past recession and then, later, COVID. However, we cannot avoid this situation any further. Our current sanitation contract is ending, and we know, based on other city bids, that our costs are going up at least 50 percent.
We have taken action to institute a user fee of $240 that will be on city tax bills in September. The only other option was to raise the millage rate, which does not affect everyone equally since it is based on home values and not the actual cost of service. This is not a step the City Council or staff took lightly, but we knew it needed to be done.
I apologize this message was not full of summer fun announcements but I know this issue is full of activities and events to keep everyone hopping. Enjoy your summer!
In other important news, the city approved the budget for 20252026 and it brings a major change to highlight. Over the past 20 years, the city subsidized any shortfall for residential garbage service costs out of the general fund budget from property taxes, which amount to approximately $380,000. This amount steadily increased to $1.3 million last year due to reductions in income from recycling materials and overall cost increases for the service.

Snellville Police Department
The Snellville Police Department strives to create a bond with the community it serves. To that end, officers are constantly in the community, building relationships with residents, young and old alike. Here are a few recent community-building endeavors.
The Snellville Police Department continued its community outreach efforts this spring through several initiatives.
1. The 35th class of the Snellville Citizens Police Academy graduated. The CPA is designed to teach residents about the operations of the police department through hands-on classes and training.
2. The police department received a donation from Walmart for Shop with a Cop, the Christmas event that provides gifts to needy children.
3. Police attended the first responders Event for Autism Awareness Month at Hopebridge Autism Therapy Center.
4. It was Career Day at W. C. Britt Elementary School.

Briscoe Park Community Center under construction City
Construction began May 5 on a new $11.3 million Community Center in T.W. Briscoe Park.
“This is a project that has been in the conceptual discussion phase for over 20 years,” said Mayor Barbara Bender. “It’s very exciting to get to this point. We look forward to the Community Center at T.W. Briscoe Park becoming a place where people can exercise, stay fit and healthy, relax, and gather together for decades to come.”
The center will be approximately 34,000 square feet and includes two basketball courts striped for multi-sport play, an indoor walking track, an outdoor pavilion, two multi-purpose activity rooms, and one aerobics room. The project will be located near the current Snellville Parks and Recreation office.
The Community Center is designed by Goodwin Mills Cawood and will be built by Place Services, Inc. which is slated to complete construction in the Summer of 2026.
“Briscoe Park offers our visitors over 95 acres of natural, passive areas and active recreation space for programming, all in one beautiful setting,” said Lisa A. Platt, Director of Parks and Recreation. “With the addition of the T.W. Briscoe Community Center, Snellville Parks and Recreation will be able to elevate our service and programming for the community and continue working toward our vision for innovative programming, to provide recreational opportunities that ensure quality of life for all in mind, body and spirit.”
The project is primarily funded by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), which was approved for recreation projects by local voters in 2023 for recreation projects. Some additional funding is provided from an earlier SPLOST vote in 2017. Notably, the City of Snellville received $900,000 in grant funding from Gwinnett County via the Community Development Block Grant program of federal funds.
Construction of the Community Center will begin in May and is expected to be complete by the Summer of 2026. During construction, visitors to Briscoe Park should prepare for the following limited impacts:
East Park Drive will be closed in its entirety from Lenora Church Road to the four-way stop at Sawyer Parkway inside Briscoe Park
The outdoor basketball courts have been closed and removed to facilitate the construction of the new Community Center. Indoor courts will be available for play once the center is completed and new outdoor basketball courts are planned for future implementation of the Park Master Plan. Parking for Staley Field will be in front of the Parks and Recreation Office or at the lots near the softball fields. The fitness trail behind the park office will remain open initially, but will be re-routed at various times to accommodate multiple phases of the construction process.
Follow Snellville Parks and Recreation and City Facebook pages and visit www.snellville.org for construction updates.
City News
Construction of a new community center at T.W. Briscoe Park began May 5. City Council celebrated with local partners at a groundbreaking last week. The new facility will include basketball/volleyball/pickleball courts, an indoor walking track, multipurpose activity rooms, and an outdoor pavilion.

Snellville man lauded for his help during shooting at local park
City resident CJ Pitt and his father-in-law Antonio Brito were honored for their efforts at the June 9 meeting of Mayor and Council with a proclamation for their selfless actions during a shooting at T.W. Briscoe Park.
As the park was hosting a large flag football event June 1, an altercation between two visitors from outside of Snellville resulted in one of them being shot. Pitt and Brito immediately evaluated the situation and took swift action. Pitt and Brito ran towards the location of the shots and promptly assisted the individual who had been injured, administering lifesaving direct pressure to the bleeding wound until the ambulance arrived.
Brito is a retired Marine Corps and Vietnam War combat veteran and Pitt is a retired U.S. Army medic.
“Antonio and CJ acted with selfless concern for the welfare and protection of our community, responding without hesitation to a distressing and potentially dangerous situation, an extraordinary act for most, but a natural instinct for two men who live their life in service and sacrifice,” the proclamation reads.
Pitt accepted the proclamation from Mayor Barbara Bender. Brito was not in attendance.

Community Garden @Snellville
Growing together: A look inside our community
By Charlene Britt Garden Administrator
Our community garden is more than just a place where vegetables grow – it’s a vibrant hub of learning, sharing, and connecting. Each season brings new opportunities to nurture the earth, build relationships, and support those in need throughout our community.
This spring, we celebrated another successful Annual Spring Plant Sale, thanks in large part to the dedication and hard work of our incredible Greenhouse Team. From seed to sale, these volunteers poured countless hours into growing strong, healthy plants that were eagerly welcomed into gardens all over town. Their passion and commitment made the entire event possible, and we are so grateful for everything they do behind the scenes.
Proceeds from the plant sale go directly toward maintaining and expanding the community garden. These funds help us purchase tools, soil, seeds, and other essentials that keep our garden growing strong year-round.
But the impact doesn’t stop there. We are proud to donate both plants and fresh produce to various organizations throughout the community. It’s our way of giving back and ensuring that everyone has access to nutritious, locally grown food.
On June 14, a dedicated group of volunteers came together for a Community Garden Workday—and what a difference they made! In just a few hours, the front gate and gazebo areas were carefully weeded and mulched, Bed No. 7 got a much-needed refresh, and the tool shed was cleaned up and reorganized. It was a productive day fueled by teamwork and shared purpose, and we’re so thankful to everyone who rolled up their sleeves to help keep our garden beautiful and functional.
Currently, the garden is in its summer harvest growing stage, with a bounty of fruits, vegetables, and herbs thriving in the warm sunshine. This productive season continues through August, when we’ll shift gears and begin preparing the greenhouse for fall planting. Our Fall Plant Sale is just around the corner, and we’re excited to offer another round of garden-ready plants to the community.
Thank you to everyone who supports the community garden –whether you rent a bed, buy a plant, pull a weed, or simply stop by to admire the growth. Together, we’re cultivating more than food; we’re growing a stronger, more connected community.

As Snellville’s own little slice of Broadway with an all-volunteer staff, SPA strives to “be kind; do good” through their mission of creating and maintaining an affordable, inclusive arts education program and an intimate theatre experience that everyone can enjoy!
SPA’s youth programming serves as a launching pad for local actors, singers, and dancers by providing high-quality theatrical and artistic experiences for performers of all ages and experience levels. In their latest production of the Tony award-winning show Hadestown, SPA’s Senior Company cast of high school and college students delivered a weekend of sold-out performances attended by friends, family, community members, and even some of our city officials!
In addition to their Senior Company for high school and college performers, SPA welcomes aspiring performers in 2nd-8th grade to start off in their Junior Company productions. They also host dance and acting classes for ages 3-20 in the Fall and Spring semesters and tons of opportunities for fun in the Summer with STEAM Camps and Musical Theatre Intensives.
Whether it’s a musical performance, a dance recital, or a cabaret showcase, SPA prides itself on showcasing diverse performances that reflect the rich tapestry of our community. Over the years, the
organization has cultivated a reputation for excellence, nurturing local talent, and offering a platform for artists to shine.
An exciting addition to their programming this year, SPA is thrilled to partner with The Atlanta Shakespeare Company to bring the touring cast of the Shakespeare Tavern’s A Christmas Carol to Snellville this holiday season! No need to travel all the way out to Midtown for this Christmas Classic when Scrooge, Marley, and the whole gang will perform for one night only right here on Friday, Dec. 19!
As Snellville continues to grow, so does SPA’s vision for the future. Upcoming initiatives include expanding programming, upgrading facilities, and introducing new and exciting opportunities for all. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or a curious newcomer, Snellville Performing Arts welcomes you to become part of its dynamic community. Attend a production, enroll in a class, or volunteer your time — every contribution helps sustain the arts that make Snellville special!
SPA embodies the spirit of creativity and unity that defines Snellville. Through its dedication to excellence and community involvement, it continues to inspire, entertain, and transform lives—one performance at a time. Stay tuned for upcoming events and opportunities to experience the magic of the performing arts at www.SnellvillePerformingArts.com.

Construction ongoing at North and Wisteria
Construction on significant traffic improvements at the intersection of Wisteria Drive and North Road is ongoing.
The investment in one of the busiest intersections in the city will improve traffic flow by addressing congestion and improving safety near The Grove at Towne Center.
Roadway improvements in the area include a 300-foot right-turn lane on Wisteria Drive westbound, a 600-foot left-turn lane on North Road southbound, and a 150-foot left-turn lane on North Road northbound.
The project will also include new sidewalks, lighting, and landscaping as well as upgraded traffic signals to improve safety for pedestrians in the area.
During the course of construction, which is expected to last roughly 12 months, there are no planned complete road closures. However, partial lane closures may be necessary. Drivers are asked to use caution when in the area and abide by signage and any traffic redirection in order to allow the project to progress safely and on time.
Check the City of Snellville’s Facebook page and Snellville.org for any major construction updates and lane closure announcements.

Annual International Festival brings cultural flair to SGHS
On March 28, South Gwinnett High School Celebrated Global Unity at its 4th Annual International Festival.
The school was transformed into a vibrant hub of cultural exchange showcasing traditional music and dances from around the globe. From the rhythmic beats of Latin American folk dances to the elegant movements of Asian classical performances, attendees were treated to a captivating spectacle of global artistry.
The corridors around the theater had booths showcasing traditional foods, crafts, and artwork from various countries. Attendees savored authentic cuisine, explored intricate handmade crafts, and learned about the unique customs and traditions of different cultures.
“This festival is a testament to the incredible diversity that makes South Gwinnett High School so special,” said SGHS teacher Solange Destang, organizer of the International Festival.
Many students participated in the performances, staffed cultural booths, and served as ambassadors, sharing their knowledge and personal experiences with attendees.
The 4th Annual International Festival was a resounding success, fostering a sense of community and celebrating the beauty of cultural diversity at South Gwinnett High School. The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing our differences.
Brookwood High School
Brookwood one of three schools recognized for athletics, sportsmanship
Brookwood High School is one of three Gwinnett County schools to be recognized for their excellence in athletics and commitment to sportsmanship.
BHS, Lanier High School and Mill Creek High School have been named recipients of the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award. This honor highlights their dedication to respect, fairness, honesty, and responsibility in competitive events.
“We are incredibly proud of Brookwood, Lanier, and Mill Creek High Schools for receiving the GHSA Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award,” Gwinnett County Public Schools Athletic Director Jason Holcombe shares. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our student-athletes, coaches, and school communities in upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship, respect, and cooperative spirit. It truly reflects the values we strive to instill in all our athletic programs, and we are grateful to Georgia’s EMCs for acknowledging these outstanding achievements.”
Sponsored by Georgia’s Electric Membership Cooperatives (EMCs), the GHSA Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award is presented annually to GHSA-member high schools, with a winner in each of the 64 regions from the eight classifications, by EMC representatives during fall athletic events and school assemblies.
Since 2006, the GHSA and Georgia’s EMCs have sponsored the Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award, which reinforces the GHSA philosophy: “Students, athletes, coaches, spectators, and all others associated with high school activities programs should adhere to the fundamental values of respect, fairness, honesty, and responsibility.” Schools winning this award are thus honored for displaying exemplary sportsmanship during competition throughout the school year.
Bridging generations with compassion and care
By Kelly McAloon Executive Director
Experience Snellville
In 2006, Fay Josephs founded Sistas Circle Inc., a small women’s prayer group dedicated to empowering women and girls by fostering self-esteem, faith, and personal growth. At the time, Josephs was working as a caseworker and witnessing firsthand the hardships many seniors faced — from lack of access to hygiene products to growing isolation. Moved by their struggles, she began quietly delivering toiletries and basic necessities to seniors—often right out of her own home — all while balancing her career with the State of Georgia and her commitment to ministry.
As the needs of both seniors and youth in the community became increasingly apparent, Josephs envisioned a broader mission: one that would bridge the generational divide. In 2010, the organization was renamed Mending the Gap Inc. to reflect this expanded purpose — to enrich the lives of older adults while empowering youth through intergenerational connection, support, and compassion.
Despite her own health challenges, Josephs has remained unwavering in her dedication to improving the lives of seniors across Gwinnett County. What began as a humble initiative serving just 22 individuals has blossomed into a vital lifeline for more than 700 seniors every month.
Today, Mending the Gap delivers food, toiletries, household essentials, and pet supplies to seniors in every city within Gwinnett County. In addition to these critical services, the organization fosters meaningful relationships by creating programs that unite youth and seniors— building a stronger, more connected community, one bond at a time.
The services are offered at no cost to seniors aged 60 or older who earn less than $1,600 a month, helping ensure that no one is left behind due to financial hardship.
In a powerful show of support, Victory Church in Norcross recently donated $315,000 to Mending the Gap, allowing the organization to purchase a property in Snellville to further their mission.
Josephs’ vision continues to grow—serving as a testament to the power of compassion, community, and connection across generations.
