Q3 SMART EVENTS

PINNACLE

PRESIDENT LETTER

Welcome to this issue of the Pinnacle, our quarterly look at the stories and people shaping Smart City Networks.

Inside, you’ll find highlights of the projects, events, and upgrades that defined this quarter. You’ll also meet the teams who brought them to life and see how their hard work continues to move us forward. The Pinnacle is here to celebrate success and recognize the people who make it possible every day.

This quarter showed once again how strong we are together. In Seattle, our team presented to the Convention Center Board of Directors and reinforced the value we bring to long-term partnerships. At Connect Marketplace and VenueConnect, we reconnected with colleagues and industry leaders, reminding everyone that Smart City is a company built on innovation and service.

Our recent contract wins and renewals in Kansas City, Houston, and Hawai‘i are exciting milestones that show the strength of our partnerships and the quality of our work. These achievements also reinforce our commitment to excellence at every venue we serve.

That same commitment was on display at some of the quarter’s most high-profile events, including the Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim and Otakon 2025 in Washington, D.C. Both required careful planning and flawless execution, and our teams rose to the challenge with professionalism and expertise.

As NFL season kicks off, we continue to demonstrate that same level of service in Indiana and Houston. Game days operations for the Colts and Texans bring unique challenges, yet our teams deliver the connectivity that keeps players, staff, media, and fans engaged from start to finish.

This issue also highlights the important network upgrades taking place across our centers. These improvements are more than infrastructure updates. They are investments in the future, ensuring we remain ready for whatever comes next.

Thank you for your hard work, creativity, and commitment. Together, you continue to raise the bar for what Smart City can achieve. Let’s keep the momentum going. To the Top!

Establishing Good Rapport

At Smart City Networks, we empower our team members to reach their greatest potential. In this issue, we proudly celebrate Sean Paquette, Internet Operations Manager, and Robbie Deery , Director of Event Services in Las Vegas, on their recent Rapport graduations!

Both completed Leadership Breakthrough One , an intensive leadership training program designed to challenge participants to dig deep and emerge stronger, more confident, and better equipped to lead. While it is a short program, it is absolutely packed with engaging exercises, meaningful insights, and dynamic challenges that inspire growth and transformation.

As two of the newest additions to the Smart City family, Robbie and Sean impressed with their willingness to dive headfirst into this rigorous training experience. Their energy, commitment, and enthusiasm were truly admirable. We are excited to see them apply the invaluable skills they developed in their daily work, strengthening both themselves and our entire organization.

Congratulations to both Sean and Robbie on this outstanding achievement!

SEATTLE CONVENTION CENTER

Presenting Smart City Networks

Smart City Networks recently had the opportunity to present to the Washington Convention Center Public Facilities District (WSCC PFD) board of director’s, the committee charged with the management of the Seattle Convention Center. Showcasing the strength of a partnership that has thrived for more than 30 years.

The presentation captured what makes Smart City unique, meaning our people, our investments, and our community impact. One of the best moments came from a slide celebrating the Seattle team, showcasing both the longevity of our employees and the diversity that shapes our culture. The Board noted how these qualities contribute to the strong, collaborative environment that continues to define the partnership.

A timeline of Smart City’s sustained financial investments in both the center and the City of Seattle further reinforced the long-term value of our relationship. In addition, we discussed our community service over the years, which reflected how Smart City’s ongoing commitment to community engagement aligns with SCC’s own values.

The feedback from the Board was overwhelmingly positive, underscoring just how meaningful this partnership is, and how much opportunity lies ahead as we continue building on this legacy together.

A Letter From David Bachler, SAFE Credit Union Convention Center General Manager

WE ARE WHAT WE Grow Beyond

Esteban had gone on to explain to me that the networking of boxes had been previously daisy-chained with one another and that this system had been sufficient for what they needed it to do.

One of the most nourishing aspects of my position is when I’m presented with the opportunity to pass on what I know. As I write this, I am honored and humbled that I get to dedicate these next few passages to a young man who has been one of the most promising talents I’ve encountered in a long time.

I first began my tenure at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center (about a year ago). Admittedly, I was excited to survey the new facility I would oversee. Having undergone a massive renovation and expansion in 2019, this facility is a modern breath of fresh air. Boasting three different venues across the campus here in Sacramento, there was a lot to take in.

One morning, my adept colleague, Esteban Wences , was showing me around the facility. We were in two of the larger exhibit halls downstairs, which were original to the building (prior to the renovation). On the floor of the halls, one would see a uniform grid of utility boxes, neatly spaced exactly thirty-square-feet apart from one another. This grid spans the entire surface area of both exhibit halls.

As I was listening to my young colleague explain the topology in place, I knelt to inspect one of the utility boxes further. After some time looking, I was amazed at what I discovered. There, tucked away (nigh out of sight) was infrastructure cabling in the box with an archaic cassette termination that to an untrained eye would have been missed.

Immediately, I ran over to the next adjacent box, then the next and the next. All were outfitted with the same unused infrastructure cabling. “You know what’s better than daisy-chaining, brother? Homeruns.”

We spent the remainder of the day looking at every telecom closet in the building searching for where this infrastructure cabling might converge. Lo and behold, in a subterranean closet, we found it. There in a telco-closet, I found a wall with a twelve-foot span of “110-blocks” (a termination junction for copper communication cables). This was promising.

After some thorough inventory, I came to realize that this wall housed over five-hundred data circuits. After sending tone signal from the boxes, we discovered that this closet

was, in fact, the home of where these pathways converged. Can’t believe I get to say this but, “Eureka!”

The problem, no cross connections at the 110-blocks existed. Meaning no network equipment could readily be introduced into the pathway. A minor setback. What was important to me was that I had building blocks, and for a childhood Lego-maniac such as myself, that was all I needed.

Far more invaluable to this situation though, I had an eager mind in my colleague, ready and willing to learn. This quickly evolved into Esteban taking point on the execution of nearly every aspect of the project. We meet almost every day to look at how the project is going, tackle any unexpected hurdles, review any materials we will need for the next leg, etc.

This young man took on a project that has ultimately been a masterclass in infrastructure cabling and network implementation. He did not shy away from the breadth of scope, quite the opposite, he dove headlong into every aspect of it. All I had to do was direct traffic in a few ways and share some know-how from my experience doing the very same thing he is doing now.

When the project is completed in mid-October, we will have accomplished exactly what we set out to from the start. Establish direct runs for each of the boxes back to the IDF and make full use of each data circuit available along the pathway. Taking what was good and making it better.

If you are reading this, Esteban, thank you. Thank you for your dedication, enthusiasm and for stepping up above all my expectations. Please, never lose the verve you have for the integrity of your work. You have a talent for what you do, and I am so very honored that I get the privilege of working next to you every day.

Smart City Networks Sacramento would like to extend our thanks to Jonathan Wiser (General Manger), Mack Smith (Engineering Manager) and Mark Quartarolo (Operations Manager) for your support and partnership in our endeavors to keep improving operations. I would also like to thank my mom and dad for all the Lego sets they bought me as a kid.

Long story long… Don’t accept the status quo. Pass on what you have learned to those who come after. In the words of Grand Master Yoda…

“We are, what they grow beyond.”

MEET San Antonio’s FANTASTIC FOUR

The San Antonio team at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center has four incredible new additions, and each one brings their own unique spark to the Smart City Networks.

First up is Chloe Cervera , Customer Service Manager, whose contagious smile can brighten even the toughest day. Known for her positivity and energy, Chloe is already making an impact with both her team and customers.

Next is Alejo Artalejo, Technician, a problem-solver at work and a car enthusiast off the clock. When he’s not keeping events connected, you can find him restoring his beloved 1974 Corvette.

Then there’s Jet Poplin, Customer Service Sales Representative, who goes the extra mile to deliver excellent customer service during the day and pushes limits outside of work through CrossFit, biking, hiking, and running.

And rounding out the group is Tina Gardner, Technician, who recently transitioned from the customer service department into operations. When she’s not diving into her new role, she’s happily caring for her more than ten pets at home!

With this lineup, it’s easy to see why General Manager Guillermo Huerta calls them the Fantastic Four of San Antonio! We are thrilled to welcome Chloe, Alejo, Jet, and Tina to the team and can’t wait to see the amazing things they’ll accomplish together.

RECOGNIZING

EXCELLENCE in Charlotte

Charlotte Convention Center General Manager Karl Seeba wanted to shine a light on someone whose dedication has shaped the success of his team: Vanessa Cauthen , Event Coordinator.

Vanessa began her Smart City journey in March 1995 as a Customer Service Representative and quickly became a cornerstone of the Charlotte operation. Over the years, she has stepped into leadership roles during pivotal moments, guiding the center through some of its largest and most high-profile events, including the Democratic National Convention and the NRA Annual Meeting . Her leadership helped build a loyal, long-term team that continues to make an influence today.

Her dedication did not stop there. During the pandemic, Vanessa traveled to Kansas City to assist with a new venue and later returned to Charlotte as a part-time Event Coordinator. In her current role, she continues to make invaluable contributions, overseeing the service desk, managing power orders, training new employees, and serving as a trusted resource for the entire team.

Throughout multiple transitions in leadership, Vanessa repeatedly rose to the occasion, from serving as interim General Manager, to managing customer service, or providing stability during periods of change. When Karl joined as GM, he leaned on Vanessa’s professionalism, patience, and deep knowledge of both Smart City and the venue to help him quickly acclimate to his new role.

Karl describes Vanessa as a steady presence who ensures operations run smoothly, even when he’s away. Her adaptability, competence, and commitment have made her an irreplaceable part of Smart City’s story at the Charlotte Convention Center and a true example of leadership in action.

In August, Smart City Networks had the privilege of providing critical technology services for Connect Marketplace 2025 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. As both the center’s technology partner and an event sponsor, our support extended beyond the show floor. In addition to delivering reliable wired and wireless connectivity for exhibitors and attendees, we also provided complimentary services to show management, helping organizers stay connected and fully engaged throughout the event.

Behind this effort was a steadfast leadership team whose collaboration made the event a success. VENUECONNECT New Orleans

Making Connections at VenueConnect!

This year’s VenueConnect 2025 in New Orleans brought together the venue and live event community for a week of collaboration, ideas, and industry leadership. Hosted at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, the gathering highlighted the innovations shaping the future, and Smart City Networks was right in the center of it all.

At Booth #602, our team met with venue leaders and event professionals, to exchange perspectives on strengthening infrastructure and enhancing the guest experience. The energy on the show floor made it clear how central technology has become to successful events.

A highlight of the week was the panel, “The Future of Connected Venues: Harnessing Emerging Technologies,” moderated by Smart City’s Dennis O’Gara . Joined by Greyson Rubin (Populous), Eric Blanc (Orange County Convention Center), and Michael Weeman (Orlando Venues), the group explored Wi-Fi 7, AI guest services, and smart security systems. Smart City also sponsored the Convention Center Roundtable session , where Tim Wortman , our Vice President of Central Operations, helped lead important conversations about the challenges and opportunities venue teams face today.

Both Dennis and Tim embody Smart City’s values of leadership, innovation, and service, and we are fortunate to have them representing our company on such an important stage. The week concluded with recognition for two Smart City partners: the Miami Beach Convention Center and the Minneapolis Convention Center, both honored with Venue Excellence Awards.

VenueConnect 2025 was a reminder of how far the industry has come, and how much potential lies ahead!

The role of a GENERAL MANAGER

At Smart City Networks, our General Managers carry an incredible responsibility: they are the steady hands guiding each venue toward success. Balancing operations, client relationships, financial goals, and team leadership, the role requires both business savvy and a hospitality mindset. To capture what it truly takes, Tami Perez , General Manager(GM), shared her perspective on the many dimensions of the job:

performance. Our ability to balance day-to-day task with long-term goals is essential for maximizing revenue and enhancing the brand, while improving service offerings. Essentially the GM acts as the heart of the Center, orchestrating all aspects of operations to achieve optimal performance and client satisfaction.

Partner Appreciation Lunch

The George R. Brown Convention Center (GRB) recently hosted its Partner Appreciation Luncheon , a special gathering to honor the many partners who contribute to successful events every day. The luncheon highlighted GRB’s commitment to excellence by unveiling a new customer service initiative designed to elevate the already exceptional service Houston is known for. Reaching for 5 Stars

Every Smart City Networks team across the country has its sights set on the same benchmark: achieving 5 Star status . This program evaluates performance in areas such as customer service, operational excellence, safety, and network integrity, setting a high bar that ensures every partnered convention center delivers world-class service to clients and guests.

Recently, the San Diego Convention Center reached that milestone, earning 5 Stars and celebrating with a special lunch for the local team. The recognition is a reflection of their dedication to creating an outstanding environment for both visitors and employees, and a reminder of what’s possible when teamwork, professionalism, and service come together.

What makes the 5 Star Program meaningful isn’t just the rating, it is the people behind it. San Diego’s success showcases the impact of talented, committed teams who bring Smart City’s standards to life every day. Congratulations to the San Diego crew, and to all of our local teams who continue striving toward that 5 Star goal.

NICCO EVANS

Spotlight

The Smart City Spotlight is dedicated to boosting our team members for their extraordinary work and dedication to serving our customers. We recently caught up with NICCO EVANS , Technical Customer Representative at the Seattle Convention Center to learn more about his role and his center. A Navy veteran with a career path that’s spanned warehouses, sales, and construction, Nicco shared how his unique role bridges client service and hands-on technical expertise, why the Seattle team’s culture makes every event a collaboration, and what it is like to support major shows like PAX West. Nicco Evans, this is your Spotlight!

Hi Nicco! Thanks for your time. Let’s start with your background. Have you always been passionate about Technology or did that come later?

N:  I’ve worked in a wide range of fields—from warehouses and sales to construction and the military. I’m a Navy veteran, and that experience really shaped my discipline and work ethic. But even as a kid, I was passionate about tech. I loved taking apart old laptops and computers, learning how they worked, and trying to put them back together. That curiosity never left me.

That’s cool! So what drew you to Smart City?

N:  At the time, I was working a job that had me moving heavy doors and cabinets every day, and it really took a toll on my body. I knew I wanted to find something different, something in tech, since that’s always been my passion. When I came across Smart City, it felt like the right opportunity. I applied for a technician role, but because my background leaned so heavily on customer service, they offered me a spot as an Event Coordinator instead.

Looking back, I’m glad they did, because it gave me a solid foundation and eventually opened the door for me to step into my current position as a Technical Customer Representative, where I get to dive deeper into the tech side while still working closely with clients.

What does your job entail? How would you describe your day-to-day activities?

N:  My role is really a balance of two worlds, customer service and technology. Day-to-day, I’m working with clients to understand their event needs, setting up and installing services, troubleshooting issues, and answering questions. No two events are the same, so I’m always learning something new and adapting.

A Technical Customer Representative sounds like an interesting balance between technology knowledge and customer service skills, which embodies Smart City Networks in a nutshell. Is it ever hard to balance those two sides?

N:  It can be challenging at times, but honestly, I enjoy the mix. I get to talk with people, figure out solutions, and then also roll up my sleeves and get hands-on with the tech. That balance keeps the job exciting.

Do you have a favorite or rewarding part of your job?

N:  Definitely the diversity. Traveling to other centers to help with events. I love that I essentially have two jobs in one. On one side, I get to connect with clients and help them feel confident that their event is set up for success. On the other side, I get to handle the technical side installing services, solving problems, and seeing immediate relief on someone’s face when their issue is fixed. That feeling never gets old.

How would you describe your team culture in Seattle?

N:  Our team culture in Seattle is awesome. We’ve got a group of people who genuinely love what they do. Everyone’s willing to pitch in, support each other, and make sure events run smoothly.

What do you like most about Seattle Convention Center?

N:  We support three amazing venues: The Seattle Center (home of the Space Needle and nonstop events), the Arch Building, and the brand-new Summit building. Each one is beautiful in its own way. What makes them even more special is their location right in downtown Seattle. From the waterfront to Pike Place Market to the first Starbucks, everything is within walking distance. It’s a pretty unique backdrop to work in every day.

Do you have a favorite event so far? Why?

N:  There are so many, but with PAX West coming up, I’d have to highlight that. PAX West is this incredible mix of gaming culture, competition, creativity, and community. Whether you’re there to try out new games, cheer on tournaments, or just vibe with fellow fans, the energy is unmatched. It’s one of those events where you can’t help but get caught up in the excitement. PAX delivers every single time.

Have there been any instances you can think of where you have used one of our 10 Business Principles in the Workplace?

N:  Yes, the principle “Customers Define Quality” stands out to me. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how much technical work we put in if the customer doesn’t feel their needs are met. I keep that in mind with every event. I don’t just focus on setting up the service I take the time to walk them through it, answer their questions, and make sure they feel confident. To me, quality isn’t just about the product, it’s about the overall experience the customer walks away with.

What advice would you give to new hires who are starting with Smart City?

N:  Be a sponge soak up everything you can. Listen, learn, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Curiosity is a strength here. Work hard but also give yourself grace nobody expects you to know everything on day one. Mistakes happen, just make sure to learn from them. Be reliable, build strong relationships, and stay proactive. Progress is more important than perfection just aim to get better every day.

And lastly, what’s something fun that people might not know about you?

N:  I play in an APA pool league here in Seattle. My team just clinched first place in 8-ball and made it to the playoffs in 9-ball. We even have the chance to compete at the World Championship in Las Vegas. It’s been a lot of fun and a great way to connect with people outside of work.

SAN DIEGO CONVENTION CENTER

Comic Con/ESRI highlight

The San Diego Convention Center had a blockbuster quarter, hosting two of the city’s most high-profile events: Comic-Con International and the ESRI User Conference. Both gatherings drew massive crowds and relied on Smart City Networks to keep attendees, exhibitors, and organizers seamlessly connected.

At Comic-Con, our team delivered fast, secure, and reliable connectivity for thousands of fans, vendors, and press members who descended on San Diego for the iconic celebration of pop culture. Every access point and every connection played a role in bringing the magic of Comic-Con to life.

Just days later, the ESRI User Conference transformed the convention center into a hub for geospatial innovators. Thanks to a recently completed Wi-Fi 6 upgrade, attendees experienced faster speeds, stronger coverage, and a network designed to handle thousands of devices in real time.

Both events showcased the commitment and hard work of the San Diego Smart City team, led by General Manager Matthew Chavez . Their tireless efforts behind the scenes ensured that two of the city’s largest and most complex events ran smoothly, proving once again how much impact a talented local team can make.

ANAHEIM CONVENTION CENTER

Anaheim Pokemon World Champion

The 2025 Pokémon World Championships returned to the Anaheim Convention Center in September, bringing together more than 30,000 attendees and 2,500 invite-only competitors from around the globe. Players battled for the title of World Champion in the Trading Card Game, Video Game, Pokémon GO, and Pokémon UNITE tournaments, alongside dozens of side events. Competitors also chased their share of the $2 million prize pool and invitations to next year’s championship.

Fans enjoyed panels, workshops, photo opportunities, exclusive shopping at the Pokémon Center Worlds store, and the chance to connect with trainers worldwide. Special guests, game artists, and content creators added to the celebration of community and culture.

Smart City Networks supported the event with more than three dozen wired and wireless networks for attendees, staff, and production teams. In a challenging environment, the network maintained peak performance, handled heavy usage, and kept service running smoothly from start to finish.

The effort did not go unnoticed. Event organizers praised the Smart City Anaheim team and our corporate NOC team for their immediate engineering support. The client noted how the team worked late into the night at Registration, responded quickly to calls and texts, and kept every detail under control. Their message was clear: this was the largest Pokémon World Championships ever, and the smoothest execution to date.

“It’s rare to find such a strong combination of technical expertise and interpersonal skills. Great team!”

SPOTLIGHT on Phoenix

After more than a year as General Manager at the Phoenix Convention Center, Ryan McCart reflected on his move from the East Coast and how the transition has shaped his experience.

“It has been a very exciting transition to Phoenix, from the move, to working with a large team and getting to know everyone. I even experienced my 1st desert summer!”

TEAMS WORK

Anime-zing Connection at Otakon

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center and Events DC welcomed thousands of fans this August for Otakon 2025 , one of the largest celebrations of Asian pop culture in the United States. The convention featured a diverse lineup of panels, workshops, and activities covering anime, manga, music, and video games.

Smart City Networks supported the event with tailored technology solutions to keep the show connected. Services included a 70Mb bandwidth network, 12 network drops, 5 VLANs, and a Wi-Fi buyout for 300 users. These resources gave organizers, exhibitors, and attendees the smooth performance needed to power live demonstrations, presentations, and interactive experiences.

A special acknowledgment goes to Bray Pabalan , a Customer Sales and Service Representative III from our corporate office, who flew out to assist with the event, including helping man the service desk. The desk typically handles high traffic during Otakon, but this year the load was noticeably lighter, proof that the team’s preparation and strong network design set the event up for success.

With every detail executed smoothly, the Smart City team once again demonstrated how expertise and collaboration form the backbone of an outstanding event experience.

High Speed Fun At Animate! Orlando

The Orange County Convention Center welcomed Animate! Orlando for its debut this quarter, drawing more than 15,000 fans for three days of anime, animation, cosplay, and pop culture. The event was packed with creativity and energy, featuring live Q&As, gaming zones, interactive panels, cosplay wrestling, costume contests, and even on-site tattoos and piercings. Celebrity appearances, including Disney princess voice actors and legendary anime illustrators, brought even more excitement to the show floor.

Smart City Networks played a key role in supporting the event’s most interactive features. The live gaming zones were powered by Smart City’s high-speed internet, ensuring every console battle and Just Dance showdown ran flawlessly for both players and spectators. By keeping latency low and reliability high, the team created the seamless connectivity these experiences required.

A special thanks goes to the Smart City Orlando team and the OCCC staff, whose hard work and collaboration made Animate! Orlando’s first year a resounding success. With technology keeping the fun flowing, the event truly set the stage for many memorable years to come.

SCENTSY SPIRIT in Minneapolis

The air at the Minneapolis Convention Center was filled with more than fragrance this summer, it was filled with Scentsy Spirit ! The company’s annual event brought thousands of consultants together for a high-energy celebration featuring training, recognition, entertainment, and exclusive product reveals. The gathering has become a signature moment for Scentsy’s global community, giving consultants the chance to recharge, connect, and get a first look at what’s ahead in the new season.

For those unfamiliar, Scentsy is best known for its warmers and scented wax, a safer, wickless alternative to traditional candles. To support this year’s event, Smart City Networks

delivered customized connectivity solutions that kept every part of the program running flawlessly. Services included a 10Mbps dedicated circuit for registration, 200Mbps of bandwidth split between the general session and two breakout rooms, and a 200-device wireless buyout to support staff operations. These resources ensured fast, reliable internet access for presentations, live demos, and behind-the-scenes business tools.

The Smart City Minneapolis team provided the technological knowhow that made Scentsy’s flagship event shine, underscoring our role as both a trusted partner to the convention center and a vital part of the attendee experience.

Serving Up Connectivity AT THE BURGER KING CONVENTION

The Phoenix Convention Center played host to the annual Burger King Franchise Convention , an international gathering that brought together franchisees, suppliers, and employees to celebrate achievements and look ahead to the future of the brand. The multi-day event featured keynote sessions, product tastings (yum!), fundraising activities, and immersive showcases of new restaurant technologies.

Smart City Networks worked side by side with the Phoenix Convention Center team to deliver the technology foundation that kept the event running smoothly. Large-scale conventions like this depend on seamless internet access for everything from registration and mobile apps to live presentations and product demonstrations. Together, our teams ensured connectivity reached every corner of the event, supporting general sessions, breakout discussions, exhibitor interactions, and back-ofhouse operations.

Smart City Networks helped Burger King create an environment where ideas could be shared and innovations explored. Attendees absolutely could have it their way!

Planting the SEEDS OF SUCCESS

The Atlantic City Convention Center bloomed with color during the Arett Sales Lawn and Garden Event , where vendors showcased everything from intricate succulent displays to eyecatching holiday décor. This annual gathering draws lawn and garden professionals from across the region to explore new products, trends, and inspiration for the upcoming season.

Just as healthy soil sustains a garden, Smart City Networks provided the connectivity foundation that helped the event grow strong. With 150 Mbps of wireless bandwidth, exhibitors and attendees enjoyed reliable internet access for product demonstrations, sales transactions, and on-site business operations.

The Smart City Atlantic City team showed that even in a venue filled with greenery and décor, it is the reliability of the network that makes an event truly thrive.

Water, Water EVERYWHERE

The Virginia Beach Convention Center welcomed the Virginia Beach Water Joint Annual Meeting, universally known as WaterJAM , the annual meeting of water and wastewater professionals showcasing the latest in technology and innovation. The event continues to grow each year, bringing together organizations committed to advancing this critical industry.

Smart City Networks supported the conference with a scalable Wi-Fi solution that began as a 375-device buyout and expanded to 500 devices to match rising demand. The Virginia Beach Smart City team ensured reliable, high-performance connectivity that kept the network

CREATIVE CONNECTIONS at the IX Center

At the IX Center in Cleveland, unique challenges often call for creative solutions. Technician II Ryan Keenan recently faced one during the Outdoor RV Show , where internet access was needed outside in the middle of the parking lot to support the Food and Beverage stand.

Ryan drew on a method he had used before to solve a similar challenge: connecting a 100-foot-tall screen located more than 1,500 feet from a building without crossing property lines. The answer was a wireless point-to-point link, using a pair of radios to emulate a long ethernet run over a wireless bridge.

By applying that same approach at the RV Show, Ryan was able to beam connectivity out of the building and directly to the stand. The result was reliable service that allowed attendees to enjoy food and drinks with the same level of convenience they expect inside the venue.

This example shows how Smart City technicians combine technical know-how with ingenuity, creating solutions that keep events connected no matter the obstacle. Way to go Ryan!

COLLECT-A-CON KC Brings the Fun

The huge Collect-A-Con event returned to the Kansas City Convention Center for its fourth year, once again delivering an action-packed weekend of trading cards, anime, and pop culture. Fans from across the country came together to browse rare collectibles, meet celebrity guests, and take part in one of the most vibrant fandom gatherings in the nation. This year’s event even featured a live performance by hip-hop artist Waka Flocka , adding music and energy to an already unforgettable weekend.

Smart City Networks kept the excitement connected by providing the technology foundation needed to support thousands of attendees, exhibitors, and staff. Our Kansas City team delivered stable Wi-Fi, secure wired connections, and the behind-the-scenes support that kept sales, demos, and fan interactions running smoothly.

With every year, Collect-A-Con KC continues to grow in scale and popularity, and Smart City is proud to help make sure the connections are just as strong as the fandom.

All Eyes On Us

The Dome at America’s Center Convention Complex lit up with energy during the Chris Brown concert , where thousands of fans packed the venue for an unforgettable performance. Behind the music, Smart City Networks delivered the seamless connectivity needed to keep the crowd online. More than 8,000 people used Wi-Fi during the show, consuming over 2 gigabits of bandwidth without interruption.

Large-scale concerts present unique challenges, with thousands of devices competing for bandwidth at the same time. Smart City’s network infrastructure at America’s Center ensured fans could share, stream,

and stay connected throughout the event with ease.

On the very same day, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame was also hosted at America’s Center, underscoring the variety of events our team can support simultaneously. Concerts, conferences, ceremonies, and everything in between all rely on dependable connectivity, and Smart City is ready to deliver.

A special thank you goes to Thomas Beltz, General Manager at America’s Center, and the local Smart City team for their outstanding work. Their preparation and expertise made it possible to power multiple major events in one day, proving that our networks are built to perform at every level.

MADE IN HAWAI‘I FESTIVAL Showcases Local Innovation

The Made in Hawai‘i Festival returned to the Hawai‘i Convention Center this year, continuing its three-decade tradition of showcasing locally made products and driving major economic impact for the state. Produced by the Hawai‘i Food Industry Association, the festival once again served as a vital platform for small businesses, giving them the chance to market directly to buyers, connect with consumers, and test new products in a thriving marketplace.

With more than 70,000 attendees and over 700 local businesses participating, the festival generated well over $10 million for the local economy. That kind of scale required reliable technology services to keep vendors, buyers, and organizers connected at every stage.

Thanks to recent major network upgrades at the Hawai‘i Convention Center, Smart City Networks delivered dependable support. The Hawai‘i team made certain that exhibitors had the bandwidth needed for transactions and demonstrations, while attendees experienced smooth, reliable Wi-Fi throughout the event. Connectivity played an essential role in the festival’s success.

The Smart City Hawai‘i team exemplified how technology and teamwork powered an event that matters deeply to the community, keeping the spirit of the islands connected and growing stronger.

CONTINUALLY IMPROVE PROCESSES

RELOCATING THE CORE at Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas

The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas (KBHCCD) recently completed a major technology project that showcased the scale and precision of Smart City Networks’ work behind the scenes. At the heart of the project was the relocation of the venue’s main distribution frame (MDF), the critical hub that powers connectivity across the entire center.

The undertaking required meticulous planning and execution. The Dallas Smart City team rerouted existing fiber, pulled and spliced new cabling, and carefully disassembled, moved, and rebuilt the MDF in its new home. To guarantee uninterrupted service throughout the project, the team kept the east side of the building live while the west side was taken offline and rebuilt.

“This was an incredibly complex project that required detailed coordination and execution,” said Rey Crespo , Smart City Networks’ General Manager at KBHCCD. “Our Dallas team worked tirelessly to ensure the center stayed connected while undergoing a major transformation.”

The successful relocation is more than just a technical upgrade. It represents Smart City’s commitment to continually improving infrastructure so our venues are prepared for the demands of modern events. By strengthening the foundation of KBHCCD’s network, Smart City has positioned the convention center to serve clients, exhibitors, and attendees with the reliability and performance they expect today and well into the future. Special thanks to the incredible Dallas team for making this happen!

NRG Park

A major Wi-Fi 7 upgrade is in progress across the Center and Arena. Work includes access point replacements, new installations with cabling, a new IDF in the Arena, and outdoor fiber pedestals at seven locations to support large-scale outdoor events. All upgrades are expected to be completed in early 2026.

KICKING OFF FOOTBALL SEASON WITH SMART CITY

Football season is back, and for Smart City Networks that means delivering the connectivity and infrastructure that keep game day running at some of the largest stadiums in the country. At NRG Stadium , home of the Houston Texans, and at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts, Smart City teams work behind the scenes to power the technology that drives the fan experience, team operations, and venue services.

In Houston, Smart City supports Texans home games by providing telecommunications to broadcast trucks, sideline communications for coaches and officials, and a range of behind-the-scenes services that keep the game running smoothly on one of sports’ biggest stages.

In Indianapolis, the scale of services is immense. Nearly every part of a Colts game relies on Smart City’s network infrastructure. VoIP phones support coaches and staff. IPTV systems power more than 200 club TVs and concession stand menus. Networked registers process millions in sales. Security operations depend on Smart City systems for ticket scanning, access control, and Wi-Fi enabled NFL security checkpoints that regulate staff and media access. The Colts production team also relies on a dedicated network and high-throughput switching system to deliver video and audio to the big boards, ribbon displays, and cloud-based production tools. Specialized connections even extend to statistics crews, photographers, X-ray machines, and RFID gear tracking.

With more than 1,500 Wi-Fi access points deployed throughout Lucas Oil Stadium and petabytes of data processed during game day, the scale of connectivity is staggering.

These successes are a direct result of the dedication of the Smart City Houston and Indianapolis teams. Their expertise, preparation, and commitment to innovation keep every connection strong and every event running at the highest level. Together, they demonstrate how teamwork and technology combine to deliver football experiences that fans and venues can count on week after week.

JACOBY’S JABBER

Website Wrangling 101

Like Liam Neeson in Taken, I too have a very particular set of skills. I can make fun marketing videos. I can handle social media. I can write blog posts and Pinnacle articles. I can host trivia events. I can even argue that the series finale of Lost made perfect sense. One thing that has never been in my toolkit? Building a website. Which is why this past year has been such an interesting challenge.

The marketing team has been working on a full refresh of the Smart City Networks website. Something easier for show management, exhibitors, and attendees to navigate, packed with the information they need, and stylish enough to stand out in 2025.

I’ve had a little website experience before. In a past life at a production company in LA, part of my job was updating our existing site with new titles. That was simple. The site already existed. I just plugged new content into the framework that was there. Easy.

Starting a new website from the ground up, though? That’s another story. Templates help, but they usually get you about 90% of the way there. The last 10% (meaning the tweaks, the customizations, the “make this button do exactly what we want it to do”), that’s where things get messy. What should be a quick adjustment often turns into a time-consuming cycle of troubleshooting: finding the issue, researching solutions, testing fixes, and then testing again to make sure nothing else broke in the process.

And yet, I found the whole thing surprisingly fun. Frustrating at times, sure. Hours would disappear while I wrestled with a feature that ultimately didn’t make the cut. But instead of seeing those moments as wasted time, I’ve tried to view them as learning opportunities. This project has given me a chance to sharpen skills I never really had before, while working toward something that will genuinely elevate how Smart City presents itself online.

I’ve also had a fantastic team around me. Sarah Finnegan and I spent hours mapping out how we want the site to look and feel. Paolo Burgos has been invaluable on the technical backend. And our new graphic designer, Katie Short , jumped right in, sourcing the images that make the site shine and providing the sharp eye needed to polish it all up. I’m grateful to each of them.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to perspective. I could focus on the frustrations, or I can recognize this as a chance to grow. I choose the latter. And while I may never be Liam Neeson, I can now add “website wrangler” to my particular set of skills.

BUILDING SKILLS, Strengthening Teams

September was a big month for Smart City Networks, with two important gatherings taking place in Las Vegas. The week began with our Midyear Review , where the executive team met at our corporate office to look back on the progress we have made this year and outline goals for the months ahead. These conversations set the stage for the continued growth of our company and reaffirmed our focus on supporting both our venues and our people.

The second half of the week shifted to Managers’ Training , which brought together team members from across the country. Representatives from San Diego, Indianapolis, Phoenix, San Antonio, Houston, Charlotte, and Orlando spent three days working closely with every department. The training sessions gave them the chance to build new skills, share ideas, and learn best practices that they can take back to their local centers. It was also an opportunity to connect with peers, strengthen relationships, and see firsthand how much knowledge and talent exists across our company.

Team members included Alexis Medina, Ben Behnkendorf, Ben Kenaga, Chloe Cervera, David Daumit, Jesse Macias, Jomari Paguia, Karl Seeba, Katie Short, Mitch Hughes, and Steven Sepulveda. Their energy and participation made the week a success and showed the value of investing in our people.

A special thank you goes out to all the participants, the trainers who delivered such impactful presentations, and our corporate admin team for coordinating the travel, meals, and accommodations that made the week possible. The joint efforts of the entire Smart City team turned this gathering into a true success.

By combining review, training, and collaboration, this week in Las Vegas was all about preparing for the future while giving our managers the tools they need to succeed today. We are excited to see what comes next!

CONTRACTS that Shape Our Future

Smart City Networks continues to grow its national footprint with recent contract extensions and major competitive bid wins that underscore the strength of our partnerships and the trust our venues place in us.

In Kansas City, we secured a seven-year extension with the Kansas City Convention Center & Entertainment Facilities . This agreement builds on the partnership that began in 2021 and covers both technology and utility services. Recent upgrades, including a new fiber backbone and the transition to Wi-Fi 6 and 6E, have already improved performance across the venue, setting the stage for even larger events in the future.

In Houston, Smart City won a competitive bid to continue our decades-long partnership at NRG Park . The new contract brings Wi-Fi 7 and a full-scale network transformation to the Center, Arena, and surrounding campus, including outdoor coverage for major activations. With Houston set to host seven matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup , these upgrades will be vital for fans, teams, and global broadcast audiences.

At the Hawai‘i Convention Center , Smart City secured a competitive bid win that extends our contract through 2034, ensuring long-term stability and continued innovation at one of the premier venues in the Pacific region.

Together, these wins and extensions reflect our ability to deliver cutting-edge technology solutions while building lasting relationships with our venue partners. Each agreement strengthens our foundation and reinforces our role as the trusted technology provider for the nation’s largest convention and event facilities.

WE CARE & GIVE BACK

Operation Clean Sweep

At the end of August, the Smart City Networks San Diego team took part in this year’s Operation Clean Sweep , an annual initiative hosted by the San Diego Working Waterfront and sponsored by the Port of San Diego. The event brings together volunteers to help beautify the waterfront and protect the bay by removing litter and debris.

Led by General Manager Matt Chavez , our San Diego team jumped right in, collecting roughly 12 large garbage bags of trash. Alongside the usual litter, the team even came across one of the day’s most unique finds: a platinum blonde wig. Did we keep it? Who knows.

Our team’s participation embodies the spirit of Smart City Networks’ commitment to giving back. By supporting Operation Clean Sweep, the San Diego team demonstrated not only their pride in the community they serve but also their dedication to creating a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone.

TEED UP for Giving Back at VC25

Smart City Networks continued its tradition of giving back by supporting the IAVM Foundation as a Flag Sponsor for the annual VenueConnect Foundation Golf Tournament. Held this year in New Orleans alongside VenueConnect 2025, the tournament brought together industry leaders for a day of camaraderie and support of a greater cause.

Representing Smart City on the course were Tim Wortman , Vice President of Central Operations, and Dennis O’Gara , Senior Vice President of Operations and Products & Services. Their participation reflected more than just a round of golf, it highlighted Smart City’s commitment to investing in the future of the venue industry.

Proceeds from the tournament directly support the IAVM Foundation, which for more than 40 years has funded scholarships, internships, research, advocacy, and professional development opportunities for venue professionals. The Foundation’s mission of advancing education and leadership across the industry aligns closely with Smart City’s values of growth, service, and community impact.

We are proud to stand alongside IAVM in supporting the next generation of leaders and strengthening the venue industry, one swing at a time.

A Letter from a SMART CITY Welcomes Cristo Rey Student Workers

CRISTO REY STUDENT WORKER

Hello, my name is Samantha Rey, and I’m currently a Student Worker at Smart City Networks. As I am preparing to step into the workforce, I want to share a little bit about myself and my interests, my experience at Smart City, and some of my goals for the future.

During my time at Smart City, I have had the opportunity to gain experience in many different departments. From Marketing to Customer service, I’ve also had a chance to work in accounting and the tech department. For me personally, my favorite department working at Smart City is Marketing. Marketing really taught me a lot of things. I learned all about what marketing is and does in a company. It really showed me how Marketing is an important department for a company or business to succeed. I also got to learn about all the different convention centers Smart City is partnered with, I was able to look into their websites and social media. I learned the different ways to get engagement in social media posts like, best days to post, the type of content, and being consistent in posting.

Outside of work, I enjoy expressing myself through art, I love to draw in my free time and find inspiration in shows and movies I watch. I’m also passionate about

portunity to build workplace skills, explore career paths, and see how teamwork drives success.

At the same time, this partnership reflects Smart City Networks’ commitment to supporting our community. By opening our doors to Cristo Rey students, we invest in the next generation of leaders while creating a space where they can learn, contribute, and grow.

cheer, this year I’m going to join cheer for my school. Cheer has taught me a lot about teamwork and discipline, and to also lead with energy and positivity. I like to socialize with my friends and classmates as well; it helps me stay connected. And when I have free time, you’ll see me in the kitchen baking and trying out new recipes. These personal interests keep me balanced and constantly inspired.

Right now, I may not know what I want to do in the future, and I think that’s okay. One of my goals is to keep learning and to try new things and figuring out what excites me. Whether it’s in the Marketing department, design, business, or even something I haven’t discovered yet, I want to find a path where I can be creative and work with others.

I’m very thankful to have an opportunity to intern with Smart City and for everything I’ve learned so far.
