We met Mike Diana at the Small Press Expo in Stockholm in the spring of 2009. Mike participated in a panel discussion with editors and artists, but very soon the other panelists were silent. Mike told his own very personal and powerful story about his provocative – and even offensive – art work, and how he received a court ruling that among other things prohibited him from drawing.

was born in a small town called Geneva in New York State. I became a fan of packages of stickers called Ugly Stickers by Topps Company. My dad would bring them to me and I started to draw my own monsters. My mother enrolled me into an after-school art class and I remember doing one art project when I was seven years old. The class took a trip to the beach of Seneca lake, each student had a bottom part of a milk carton and we were to collect shells off the beach to place in the carton. Plaster was poured on top and when it

I picked up those items for my art piece, feeling at this early age I was making a statement with my art, that I could not ignore the pollution on the beach. Once in art class at school our task was to draw a portrait of our family. For some reason I drew my whole family nude. The teacher looked over my shoulder and
