I saw Debbie last week — she was riding her unicycle in the park. She’s amazing. She told me she wants to play hockey next week at circus school. She wants to play hockey at circus school? Yes, unicycle hockey! Five people on each team — and they all have to ride unicycles — even the goalkeeper! That sounds brilliant. I might go and watch it with Mike. You mean, Minecraft Mike? I don’t think it’ll be easy to drag him away from his computer. It’s true, he is amazingly good at Minecraft. Did you know he often livestreams when he’s playing? Tens of thousands of people watch him play. But he did say he realises he needs to see a bit more of the real world. I remember Mike said that he went outside once; but the graphics weren’t very good. Ha ha. Maybe he can join me and Kay. Our parkour group is happy to accept new members.

Parkour? What’s that? It’s fantastic. It’s a sport but it’s also an art form. We run, we jump, we roll, we… well it doesn’t sound very exciting but I can assure you it is brilliant. You can come as well if you want. When’s your next parkour session? Tomorrow, after school. I can’t make it. I’m going to Tilly’s cosplay group. Cosplay? I don’t know that sport. It’s not a sport. It’s a cultural event which started in Japan back in 1984. People who are interested in fantasy worlds dress up in costumes from books, TV series… You mean like a fancy dress party? Oh it’s a lot more than that. People inhabit the characters and really feel part of the world that cosplay creates. It sounds interesting. I might give it a go.

TALK ABOUT IT! 1. What are the different activities mentioned in the text? 2. How many of them have you tried? Would you like to try the others? 3. How can you make your hobby or sport more popular?

DOING IT MY WAY Millions of people read comics, books and watch films and TV programmes but some people like to take things a little further. Read about three people who like to do things their own way. Hi, I’m Cathy. I’m thirteen and I’m a big fan of fan fiction. A lot of older people think that teenagers don’t do much reading but that is not true. I read for hours every day. I am a member of a big website that allows people to post all sorts of fan fiction. Of course lots of people develop the storylines of Harry Potter or the Twilight books but I like to read fan fiction based on stories that are not well known, particularly Victorian Gothic novels. I love the way people take the stories and run with them in whatever way they want. I have written a bit of fan fiction but I haven’t dared to post anything online — yet.

Hello, I’m Kev. I’m fourteen and I love music, in particular layering and making mixtapes. With even the cheapest laptop it is now possible to take a piece of music and turn it into something completely different by adding layers to the original soundtrack. EDM (Electronic Dance Music for those of you over 25) is very popular these days and I would love to produce the music of the future. I still have a lot to learn but there are some great people out there who are happy to share their skills. Look out for my songs in the future. Kev Alar is the name!

history. Now, before you all fall asleep, let me explain. I don’t just read about history and watch documentaries, I live history. Now that may sound a bit strange but it will all become clear. My whole family are into battle re-enactments. Our favourite period is the English Civil War. We all dress up in the clothes of the period, eat food from the period and fight with weapons of the period. It is brilliant! What a great way to learn about history. We’ve also been Vikings (no horns on the hats!) and we even spent a very rainy weekend in the Bronze Age. So find out where your nearest re-enactment club is and start living history!

First up tonight we have the very talented Alex Browne. For those of you who don’t know her, she’s an amazing talent. Alex, can you explain what it is you do? Sure, well, I’ll try. The first thing I started doing was singing. I love it and I think I have a pretty decent voice. She does, I’ve heard her singing and she’s amazing. So I originally wanted to pursue a career as a singer. Now that we’re in the 21st century, it’s possible for a fifteen-year-old girl to launch her career with the help of the Internet. And were you an overnight success? Er, no. A few thousand people saw my videos; some people loved them, other people were not so nice about them. That must be hard to deal with. It is. It’s sad that some people seem to enjoy being unkind. But anyway. I got quite a lot of people asking me to help them improve their singing. Once again, the Internet came in very handy. I didn’t have to travel anywhere — I could Skype with people and help them improve. So you became a singing coach? Yes, I did. But then I started getting lots of visitors to my coaching videos. So many that record companies started approaching me, asking me to promote their music. 21st century possible launch success deal with

And did you? Not at first. But then they sent me some really great songs by new artists and I was happy to promote them — and even happier to be paid to promote them. So now you’re an influencer. That’s right. I’m eighteen now and work full time on my coaching videos and sponsorship deals. I LOVE what I do. That sounds brilliant. Now we turn to Harry Pane. Now for those of you that don’t know Harry, he was not the most academic of pupils at school, is that right, Harry? That’s very true. I was too busy playing football, I just lived and breathed football 24/7. But you had no plans to become a professional? Not at all. I just enjoyed playing with my mates, then with a local team, but then a talent spotter spotted me. And how did things change? Pretty much overnight. I was taken to the club and they got me to sign a contract. That was it. I became a professional footballer. So your hobby became your job. Exactly. I’d play football even if no one paid me — but don’t tell my boss that!

TALK ABOUT IT! 1. Tell Alex’s story to a classmate, but make one mistake. Can they spot it? 2. Alex’s ‘career’ changed direction. Could the same happen to Harry? 3. Imagine how your career might develop. Tell your classmates.

FOREVER YOUNG It is not only young people who can be passionate about their hobbies. Here are older people who have their own passions. But, only three of the stories are true. Use your critical thinking skills to try to work out which story is not true.

story A

Mollie Macartney loves horse riding and still rides with her thirteen-year-old granddaughter, Matilda. Although she broke her hip recently she won’t stop riding. But Mollie has a new passion — flying. She thinks normal flying is boring but is now taking lessons to become a pilot. “England is so beautiful,” she says, “I never realised that there were probably 50 shades of green.” Mollie has had an active life. She once had to deliver a secret message to Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister, while he was on a ship. After the war, Mollie worked as a nurse and a chef but she always wanted to fly. Now she’s taking lessons and studying hard to become a private pilot — not bad for a woman of ninety-three.

In many old people’s homes the entertainment comes from the TV and the old people sit passively watching. This is not the case in an old people’s home in Melbourne Australia. The home had a new volunteer, Joseph D’Onofrio, who was ‘only’ seventy-three. Joseph’s passion in life is fencing. Could he teach old people to fence? Many people had their doubts but with Joseph’s passion it was not long before many of the residents, some of them in their nineties, were fencing with each other. Some people had to hold onto their walking frames but they loved the new sport. There are sixteen residents that fence every Monday. Sister Delores Kirby is ninety three and is one member of the fencing group. “It’s a challenge,” she said. “I’m always a bit afraid I might fall over.” Joseph is very happy with their progress. He wants them to start taking part in competitions at the end of the year.

When thirteen-year-old Oliver Hutton went for a bike ride with his grandparents, he wasn’t expecting to come home exhausted. “I can’t believe they have so much energy!” said Oliver. “We just love cycling,” said eighty-five year old Janet Hutton. In late 2016, Janet, together with her eighty-nine-yearold husband Dick, bought a tandem. In June 2018, after over three years of tandem training, Janet and Dick set off on their journey. They took the ferry from Harwich in England to Esbjerg in Denmark, then they cycled through Denmark (lovely and flat!) and finally took the ferry to Larvik in Norway. “After riding through Denmark it was a relief to be riding on the left hand side of the road again in Norway!” said Dick. After a quick visit to Oslo they cycled over the Jotunheimen (with the highest mountain in Europe) and then to Trondheim. They then went inland to Östersund in Sweden and finally straight north to North Cape. “I’m so glad we did it,” said Janet. “But I’m happy we took the ferry back from North Cape to Scotland!” Dick and Janet are now planning their next cycling adventure — to Egypt!

The Kapkenduiywo Primary school in Kenya has almost 1000 pupils but in the early 2004 it had a new pupil, Kimani Maruge. Most of his fellow pupils were excited young six- and seven-year-old boys and girls. Kimani, on the other hand, started school at the age of eighty-four and sat in class with his grandchildren. Kimani had been a soldier and fought against the British before Kenya got its independence but he had never gone to school. In 2002 the Kenyan government offered free primary school education for all Kenyans. Kimani was passionate about the importance of education and, despite a lot of opposition, started studying at Kapkenduiywo Primary school. Sadly, Kimani died at the age of ninety but he inspired many people to see the importance of education and a film was made about the oldest man ever to start primary school.

HE THINKS SHE THINKS Friday 8pm I can’t believe it! Tomorrow I’m going on a date with Melissa, the most amazing girl! I’ve got it all planned, a bike ride, a picnic, a swim in the lake and a barbecue. It’ll be great!

Saturday 11.50am I didn’t know that Melissa is a regional cycling champion! I thought we were going for a five-kilometre ride to the lake. Melissa had other ideas… We cycled fifty kilometres this morning! I don’t think I have ever been so tired.

Friday 8.20pm I’m going cycling with Matt tomorrow. He’s a nice guy and he tells me he’s good at cycling. I’m not too bad myself — and I’m better now that I’m a vegetarian. Saturday 11.51am That was a pleasant little ride though Matt did have a red face at the end. He made a picnic and I made sure there was a salad and some cheese sandwiches for me. Matt was totally cool about me being a vegetarian.

Saturday 12.15pm A vegetarian? I can’t believe it! I have half a kilo of hamburgers in my bag for the barbecue. I need a plan B, and quickly. Saturday 6.45pm I managed to buy some bananas and lemons. Can you barbecue bananas? I’ve no idea. But I’m sure Melissa thinks I’m a big joke already. I can’t believe I’ve made such a mistake!

Saturday 6.40pm Matt seemed to find the second fifty-kilometre run pretty difficult. I had time for a little rest in the park while I waited for him to catch up.

Saturday 7.20pm Mmm, grilled bananas with lemon juice. Amazing! Also amazing was the fact that Matt dozed off after the meal. He actually looks even cuter when he’s asleep!

Saturday 7.30pm I’m sure she never wants to see me again. After our ride she said, ‘We should do this again’, but people always say that, don’t they? Oh well, I did my best.

TALK ABOUT IT! 1. What preparations did Matt make for the meeting? 2. Melissa surprised him in a couple of ways. What ways? 3. Do you think Matt and Melissa should meet up again? Why or why not?

RAINY DAYS “Dad,” asked my 13-year-old daughter Abby one evening over dinner, “what’s the difference between ‘like’ and ‘love’?” “That, Abby,” I replied, “is an excellent question.” Lesley, my wife, my son Gareth and of course Abby stopped eating to hear what I was about to say. “Well, like is when you, er, like something, or someone.” Abby clearly was not impressed. “Why don’t you tell the story of you as a young man?” asked Lesley. “You mean…?” Lesley nodded. “I think they’ll like it.”

“Well okay. Are you sitting comfortably?” I looked around the table and it appeared that my Swedish meatballs were not as popular as I had hoped. Abby, Gareth and Lesley were all waiting for me to start. “Then I’ll begin. Many moons ago there was a young man who was studying for his A-levels.” “So you were about seventeen?” asked seventeen-year-old Gareth. “That’s right. So there was a cute girl in his biology class and they started going out together. They went to the cinema — when people still went to cinemas. They went to discos when they were still called discos and they watched hours and hours of TV together.” “When people still watched TV together,” added Abby. “Good point. Then one day, the two of them had planned to go out for a walk along the canal. But on that particular day it was raining heavily so the young man called up his special friend and they postponed the walk for another time. A week later they planned to go on a walk through the forest, but once again, heavy rain stopped their plans. Now as I’m sure Gareth knows, and Abby will soon find out, the pressure of exams does not leave a lot of time for other things. That included his relationship with his friend from biology class.” “So you split up with her?” asked Abby. “Not exactly ‘split up’” I replied. “The relationship just seemed to fizzle out. It wasn’t going anywhere and we both had a lot of other things on our minds. “I went off to University and worked hard and got my degree in physics. I had friends and we met up, played football, played music together and went cycling now and again. It was on one of our cycle rides that something hit me.” “A bird?” suggested Abby. “A tree?” suggested Gareth.

“No, not physically, mentally. You see it started to rain. The others in the group started complaining and were looking for a bus shelter or a café where we could avoid the downpour. I, on the other hand, actually started smiling. It was really fun to cycle along in the rain. With that big smile on my face I started thinking about the special friend I had when I was in school. I realised how much I missed her. As soon as I got home I found her address and wrote her a letter.” “Letters!” cried Abby. “I love letters. Why don’t more people send letters these days?” “Well in those days we didn’t have a choice,” I continued. “I sent her a simple quote: Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain.” “That’s cool,” said Abby. “Did she write back?” “She did. She invited me to go for a walk in the forest that Saturday. She told me the forecast was for rain.” “And did it?” asked Gareth. “It rained cats and dogs and we got completely soaked but it was the best walk I’ve ever been on. We walked, we danced, we held hands… I even get goosebumps thinking about it now.” “So where is this woman now?” asked Abby. “Are you still in contact with her?” “I am,” I replied with a smile on my face. “She’s the woman sitting right here, brushing away a tear from her cheek.” “Mum?” asked Abby. “You’re…” Lesley nodded. “It was a very special walk.” “And to answer your question, Abby,” I continued. “When I was seventeen I liked your mum. After our special walk, I fell in love with her.”
