2. Apply for a Job PART 1

Soon it will be time to get your first summer job. Write a job application in your notebook. Choose one of the jobs in the box or come up with a suggestion on your own. The following should be included in your letter:

• Write briefly about yourself (name, age, family and where you live).

• Write about why you would like this job and why you would be perfect for it.

Listen to five people talking about their jobs. What do they work as? Write the numbers 1–5 in the correct boxes. Three boxes will be empty.

Choose between the different occupations in the box. Describe one to a classmate without saying which one you are describing. Take turns describing and guessing.

Lucky you, your letter applying for a job got you a job interview! Pretend to interview each other for a summer job.

One of you is applying for a job, the other person is the interviewer. Take turns. Here are questions you can ask:

– Tell me a little bit about yourself.

– What experience do you have?

– Why should I hire you?

– Why would you like to work here?

The Art of Learning a Language

1. Pass the Tennis Ball

1. All students in class stand in a ring. One student stands in the middle of the ring with closed eyes.

2. The students who are a part in the ring pass a tennis ball around until the student in the middle says stop and names a category.

3. The student that ends up holding the tennis ball names five things in that given category. They have to say all five things before the tennis ball has gone all the way round the ring again.

4. If they don’t do in time, the student holding the ball switches places with the student in the middle and a new round begins.

Here are some categories:

animals countries cities sports clothes food drinks furniture colours school subjects famous people

2. Give me an Example

1. One half of the class competes against the other half.

2. One student from each half stands in front of the class with their back to the whiteboard.

3. The teacher writes a category on the whiteboard. For example: Things you can have in your school desk/locker/drawer.

4. The students in the class say words in that category. The student who is standing in front of the class tries to figure out what the category is. Examples of words in this category: Pencil, books, ruler.

5. Do not call out the examples but raise your hand and let the teacher choose who gets to say the examples until the student at the front knows the correct category.

6. Take turns being at the front of the class and guessing what the category is.

3. Finding Words, Finding Confidence

Emma is not very good at speaking English yet but is doing her best to find words to make herself understood. Listen to the conversation between Emma and Alex. Match descriptions 1–3 with the correct words. Then answer question 4 by putting crosses in the correct boxes.

4. Pack Your Bag

a) If you were in a hurry and had to decide five things to pack, what would you choose? Write the things you would pack in your bag. Don’t show your classmates.

b) Work in pairs. Try to guess what your classmate would pack. Ask questions where you can only answer with a yes or a no

Real Evil

1. Words that Illustrate the Meaning of Words

Choose two of the words in the box. Give examples of things, people, animals or places that you think show what the words mean.

Let’s write a poem about a cat! You can choose to write about Evil or any other cat. Make it rhyme! Write at least six lines. The words in the boxes will help you, but you don’t have to use any of them.

6. Epic Cat Poem
