Wish you were here
Zelda was bored. It was a hot day in August, and every time she looked at her phone to see what time it was, it was 2.55. How could that be? It was almost like time stood still. How strange, she thought. When she was getting ready for school in the morning, there was never enough time. But there was no school today, of course – she was still on summer break and nothing, absolutely nothing, had happened all summer.
But all that was about to change. After many boring, lonely weeks, Zelda’s friends were finally back home. They were supposed to come over at three o’clock and she had already been pacing her room for at least half an hour, hoping that

they would get there early. She couldn’t wait to see her friends again.
‘I hope they will be here soon’, she said to her stuffed cat, Gizmo, that was lying on her bed next to a few colourful pillows. Of course, Gizmo didn’t answer. He just stared back at her with his big, round plastic eyes.
Over the last year, strange things had happened to Zelda and her friends – but at least there were no talking toys. Not yet, anyway.
She walked outside. Perhaps her friends were on their way? But when she stepped into the garden. There was no sight of them.
‘Okay’, she said to herself. ‘I guess I’ll check the post box while I wait.’
Zelda opened the post box and peeked inside. It was empty, except for a very small letter. Curious, she reached down and pulled it out. Then she gasped. The letter was for her!
But who was it from? There was no return address on the envelope, and she didn’t recognise the handwriting.
Or … did she? She looked a bit closer. There was something familiar about the handwriting –stuffed cat gosedjurskatt no sight syntes inte till peeked kikade curious nyfiken recognise känna igen familiar bekant
the way the Z of her name tilted and swayed like waves in the ocean. Her heart started to beat faster. Why did it look like her own handwriting?
‘I didn’t send this letter to myself’, she whispered. ‘Did I?’
Zelda was bored, but she wasn’t that bored. Besides, the letter looked like it had a travelled a long way. There were tons of stamps on it, and the envelope was slightly torn, with little stains next to Zelda’s name. They looked like water stains. Zelda held up the letter to her nose and sniffed. For a second, she thought she could smell saltwater and coconuts. tilted lutade besides dessutom envelope kuvert

She tore open the envelope. There was a photograph inside of a girl standing on a tropical beach. At first, Zelda thought it might be a postcard, but it looked like a regular photo. But there was something postcard-y about the beach, she thought. The photo looked like it was taken on holiday. The sand on the beach was white, with tall palm trees sticking up everywhere. The water was a lovely turquoise blue.
Are those coconut trees? Zelda thought. Well, they must be.
But who was the girl? Zelda looked closely. In fact, the girl looked like Zelda. The mysterious girl could almost be Zelda’s twin. They had the same hair, the same skin, the same smile. And the girl had tiny freckles on her face – just like Zelda. Zelda sometimes wished that she had a twin. It seemed so cool to have someone who looked just like you. Someone to share stuff with. What if Zelda had found her twin?

‘How strange’, Zelda said to herself. ‘I wonder who that could be. And what does she want?’
Slowly, Zelda turned the photograph over. There was something on the back of the photo, written in the same handwriting she had seen on the envelope. The message was short. It just said: Wish you were here.

Zelda stared at the photo in her hand. Who was the girl in the picture? And why did she look like me?
Zelda thought of her dad’s family in the Caribbean. They lived on the island of Tobago, but Zelda had never actually met them. Her dad never wanted them to talk about his family. They had a couple of photos at home on the wall, but that was it. Sometimes Zelda felt like her dad’s family had some kind of dark, terrible secret. But what could it be? Maybe the girl who had sent her the photo could help her find out.

Are you sure you want to find out? a voice whispered softly to her. Some secrets are kept hidden for a reason.
Suddenly, Zelda heard a noise across the street – an echo of laughter. Seconds later, Liam, Sam, and Matilda were walking into her garden.
‘There you are!’ Zelda shouted. ‘Finally! I’ve been waiting forever!’
Her friends grinned and hugged her. But there was something new about Liam.
‘Liam! What happened?’ Zelda pointed at Liam’s arm.
‘I hurt myself playing football’, said Liam.
‘I’ve had this stupid cast on the whole summer. It’s finally coming off tomorrow. Can’t wait.’
‘So, what have the two of you been up to?’
Sam asked the twins. ‘You’ve been staying with your aunt and uncle in the UK, right?’
‘Yep’, said Liam. ‘We just got back yesterday.’
‘He’s been reading all summer.’ Matilda gave Zelda a wide-eyed Can you believe it? look.
‘Actual books.’

Liam?’ Sam joked.
Liam stared at his friend. ‘Oh, come on. I HAVE read before, you know.’
‘Anyway’, Liam continued, ‘we went to London for a few days. Matilda wanted to visit this huge bookshop near Piccadilly Circus, and I found some really cool horror books by a guy called J.Z. Shivers. I think I’ve read them all now. They’re super scary! Lots of ghosts and zombies and stuff. You’d like them, Zelda. You too, Sam.’

‘Oh, I’ve never heard of those!’ said Sam.
‘Cool’, Zelda said. But she couldn’t stop thinking about the letter.
‘Zelda? Are you okay? What’s that in your hand?’ Matilda reached out and touched the photograph.
‘Oh’, said Zelda. ‘Yeah, it’s sort of weird, actually. I just got this letter, but I don’t know who it’s from. It doesn’t say anything, except for Wish you were here.’
‘Wish you were here’, Matilda repeated. ‘But why? You don’t know who sent the letter, right?’
‘No’, said Zelda weakly. ‘Hey’, she added. ‘How about some iced tea? I think my mum made some last night. Can you believe how hot it is?’
Matilda didn’t answer at first. She was still staring at the photo with raised eyebrows. Then she said, quite slowly: ‘She sort of looks like you, you know.’

‘I know’, said Zelda.
‘A mystery’, said Sam. There was a twinkle in his eyes. Sam loved mysteries.
‘Yeah, a mystery, I guess’, Zelda agreed. ‘A strange one.’
‘But mysteries can be solved.’ Matilda smiled. ‘Even strange ones. I bet your dad knows who the girl in the picture is. Maybe she’s a relative or something. Let’s go talk to him!’
Zelda hesitated. ‘Um. Dad doesn’t like to be disturbed when he's working.’

Zelda’s dad was working right now. They could hear him inside the study: that fast, steady, rat-a-tat sound from his keyboard as he typed. Zelda didn’t really know much about her dad’s job. For as long as Zelda could remember, her dad had worked from home. He always took a cup of coffee with him and locked himself in the study to work. She could often hear how he paced the room and even talked to himself. Sometimes she could hear strange music and voices from the study too. But her dad never talked about his job.
‘But your dad is always so nice!’ said Matilda. ‘I’m sure he won’t mind.’
They were standing outside her dad’s study. The typing was even louder now. Before Zelda could say anything, Liam knocked on the door. study arbetsrum locked himself låste in sig nice trevlig

Is this the right place?
A few hours later, Zelda and her friends were having pizza in Zelda’s room. They sat on the floor and ate slices straight from the pizza box. The pizza was delicious: hot and salty. Zelda’s dad had ordered four different pizzas, so the gang had a lot to choose from. Everyone found their favourite.
‘Mmm, cheese!’ said Matilda.
‘Mmm, pepperoni!’ said Liam.
‘Mmm, ham and pineapple!’ said Sam.
‘I like all of them’, said Zelda. ‘But my dad likes banana on his pizza. That’s a bit weird, isn’t it?’
‘I don’t know’, said Liam. ‘I’d like to try it sometime. I’ve never met a pizza I didn’t like.’
‘I think so …’ But Zelda didn’t sound too sure. They were heading away from the beach now, towards the dense forest surrounding it. Zelda tried to go in the opposite direction, but something pushed her forward. Onward. Okay, she thought. I guess we’re going that way. They landed inside a tropical forest where the air was even warmer and thicker. The sun was almost gone now, and the sky had softened into shades of deep, dark blue. That trickling sound they had heard back in Zelda’s bedroom was
everywhere: there must be a waterfall nearby, she thought. Up in the trees, colourful parrots were cawing and there was a chattering sound, also from the trees. Could it be …?
‘Monkeys!’ said Liam. ‘Look, they’re climbing the trees! They’re so cute!’
But Zelda didn’t have time to look at the monkeys. She stared at the small, winged creature hanging in the tree above her. It had sharp teeth sticking out of its little mouth, and a surprisingly sweet face. She came closer. The animal woke up

‘I know where that is!’ she said to her friends. ‘We saw those huts earlier, when we got here. Come on, let’s hurry!’
They ran down the beach. Sam’s heart was pounding so loudly, he thought it would jump out of his chest.
‘Anya’, he said quietly. ‘Please make sure our friend is safe.’

‘Hey! What have you done to Zelda?’ Liam demanded. ‘Why on earth did you kidnap her if you’re the one who wanted her here in the first place?’

Let’s go and check it out!’
Zelda and her friends followed her and joined the party. Soon, they were standing next to the band. They were playing on big drums – that was where the beautiful music was coming from. But they didn’t look like normal drums.
‘What are these?’ Liam asked.
‘They are steelpans’, Anya explained. ‘It’s an old Caribbean instrument. You might have heard it in The Little Mermaid. You know, the ‘Under the Sea’ song.’ She started humming it, and the other children sang along.
‘Yes!’ said Zelda. ‘I thought I had heard something like that before. It’s beautiful.’
‘It’s called calypso’, said Anya. ‘The music –and the dance. See how some people are dancing? steelpans ståltrumma humming nynna sang along sjöng med
That’s calypso, too.’
Zelda looked around. There were people dancing and enjoying the music all over the beach. Some of them had brought picnics.
‘It’s a sunset celebration’, said Anya. ‘People come here to dance, eat, and listen to the music as the sun sets. I guess we’re a little late.’
‘Is your family here?’ Zelda whispered to Anya. She wanted to meet Anya’s family. They were her family too, weren’t they? But she couldn’t meet them, she reminded herself. Not now. If she met them now, she would have to lie about who she was. Zelda didn’t want to start off her relationship with her relatives with a lie.

The next morning, the children sat on the beach having breakfast. Anya had come back early – and she had brought delicious bread, cheese, fruit, and a big bottle of orange juice with her.
‘I told my parents I was going for a picnic on the beach.’ Anya had some juice and passed the bottle to Sam. ‘Technically, it wasn’t a lie.’
Zelda took a big sip of her juice. She rubbed her eyes. ‘I can’t believe what happened last night. Should we go straight to the police?’
‘Are you sure they would believe us?’ said Liam. ‘We’re just a bunch of kids.’
