TEAM ENGLISH A

Elevpaket – Tryckt + Digitalt

Late for school

The map room

Not again

Late for school

Sam was late for school. It was his first day at his new school in Stockholm. He hurried down the empty corridor. All the other kids were already in their classrooms.

‘Great’, he muttered. ‘Just great. The first real day of school, and you’re late. Perfect. Classic Sam’.

The school seemed even bigger now that it was just him. Empty. It had a lonely, spooky feel to it. It was an old school, too, full of stairs and big windows. It almost felt like a museum. He tried to remember which classroom was his. There had been a photo of a large owl next to the door. He remembered that.

5 CHAPTER 1

‘Owls are wise and wonderful’, his new teacher, Mrs. Jensen, had said yesterday when he visited the school. ‘Just like all of you’.

She seemed nice. Maybe she wouldn’t mind that he was a bit late?

He looked up and saw the photo of the owl. Its eyes were big and dark. It almost felt like the owl knew him. He shook his head. His mum

Christine always said he imagined stuff. ‘Just like I did when I was a kid’, she said. His other mum

Lena would answer with a laugh.

They had no idea …

The door was closed, but he heard people talking and laughing inside. Sam took a deep breath and knocked.

‘Yes?’ It was his teacher, Mrs. Jensen. Her voice sounded kind, just like he remembered from yesterday.

‘It’s me, Sam’, he said. ‘The, uh, the new kid.

I’m a bit late, sorry’.

The door opened. ‘Don’t worry, Sam’, said Mrs. Jensen. ‘We were just getting started. Take a seat. You can sit next to Matilda’.

She pointed at a girl with long, dark hair. The girl smiled at him. Sam smiled back. Then he tripped and almost fell over a football. Who leaves a football in the middle of a classroom? Sam wondered. The other children started giggling and he felt like an idiot. He could feel his cheeks burning.

7 CHAPTER 1

‘Liam!’ The teacher shook her head. ‘How many times have I told you not to bring your football into the classroom? Leave it with me, please. You may have it back after school’.

‘Alright’. The boy stood up and handed the ball over to his teacher. Everyone was looking at Liam now, except Matilda. She was staring into a textbook. When he walked up to her, she looked up and smiled again. She had a friendly smile, Sam thought.

‘Hi, Sam’, said the girl. ‘I’m Matilda. And that’s my brother, Liam. Don’t mind him. I’ve tripped over that stupid old ball so many times. He brings it everywhere’.

Sam nodded. That made sense. They looked sort of alike now that Matilda mentioned it. His new classmate had big, dark eyes. For some reason they made him think of the owl in the photo outside.

Wise, he thought. Definitely wise. Wonderful? I guess we’ll find out.

He was always doing that, thinking random stuff to himself. It drove him crazy, but he couldn’t help it. That’s just the way he was. And when he saw how Matilda kept looking in her book, he felt that she was the same.

Perhaps they would be friends? He could use a friend.

‘Here’, Matilda said. ‘You can look in my book if you like’.

‘Thanks’, he whispered. Maybe it will be okay, he thought to himself. Maybe it won’t happen again.

9 CHAPTER 1

The map room

‘Time for a group project’, said Mrs. Jensen. ‘The topic is Save the planet’.

‘We’d better start right now’, someone muttered from the back of the classroom. ‘We’re already a bit late, you know’.

Sam looked around and saw that the person talking was a girl with black, curly hair and round glasses. She was holding a small, plush cat in her hands. In Sam’s old school, they weren’t allowed to bring toys into the classroom. Perhaps it was different here. A lot of things seemed different.

Liam and his friends rolled their eyes and laughed, but Mrs. Jensen sounded serious when

she said: ‘You’re right, Zelda. It’s very urgent.

We should start right away. You can work with Matilda and Sam’.

‘Yay, we got Einstein!’ Zelda said and held out her cuddly toy to Matilda. It looked like the cat was nodding.

‘The name’s Matilda’, Matilda said with a small grin. Sam thought that she looked quite pleased with her nickname.

‘Well’, said Mrs. Jensen. ‘Since you already have your group ready, why don’t you go find a place to sit? Somewhere quiet. You have until morning break. Make sure to bring your books with you. You may use computers later, but today is for talking. And getting to know each other’, she added and winked at Sam, who blushed again. ‘And remember to speak English!’

‘Don’t worry’. Matilda got up from her chair.

‘I know just the place’.

‘So, where are we going?’

Sam followed the two girls up the stairs. Their steps echoed as they climbed. Over his head, he could see the high ceiling. It reminded him of the sky on a cloudy day. There were big stone figures next to the stairs. Late summer sun flooded in through the massive windows and made the stone figures glimmer.

Yep, a museum, he thought. Or maybe Hogwarts.

‘We’re going to the map room’, said Matilda. ‘It’s super old, no one uses it. But I like it there. It’s cosy’.

‘You have an English accent’, he said. ‘You sound like Hermione from Harry Potter’.

‘Thanks, I guess’, she said. ‘My mum is English, and my dad used to live in London. We speak a lot of English at home. Do you have English family, too?’

‘No’, he said. ‘My mums wanted me to go to an international school, though. We’ve been, uh, moving quite a bit. What about you?’ he said and looked up at Zelda. She was already halfway up the stairs.

‘My dad’s from the Caribbean’, shouted Zelda. ‘I speak English with him and Swedish with my mum’.

‘That must be cool’, said Sam.

13 CHAPTER 2

He had never been to the Caribbean, but it looked nice in pictures. Clear, blue water, white sand, pirates. He laughed quietly. Well, maybe not pirates. They weren’t real, were they?

‘Well’. Zelda started stroking the toy cat again. Sam didn’t know why, but she suddenly looked sad.

‘Who’s that?’ he said.

‘His name is Gizmo,’ said Zelda. ‘He keeps me calm. I need him.’

Matilda just nodded.

‘I mean, I get it,’ said Zelda. ‘Cuddly toys are lame, right?’ She sounded almost angry.

‘No!’ said Sam. ‘I have a bunch at home. Maybe I can bring one of them to school, too.’

Zelda looked at him, a bit friendlier now. But she didn’t say anything.

The wind was warm against his cheek. At least it’s not cold, he thought. Liam liked warm weather. Liam also liked football, tacos, and hanging out with his friends. Liam didn’t like to be in trouble. He got himself into trouble all the time, but he never meant to. It was just bad luck, that was all.

Or was it?

Your sister is right, a small voice in his head whispered. This is totally your fault. Oh, you’re in so much trouble, Liam …

He sniffed. There was a smell in the air, he thought. The smell of mud and water. There was another smell too, warm and salty. It made his stomach rumble. Could it be …?

No. No way.

‘Sis?’ he said weakly.

‘Is that chips I can smell?’

He was sure that Matilda would laugh and call him a fool. Instead, she said: ‘I think so. Liam, you need to open your eyes. I think I can see Big Ben down there! We’re …’ She took a big gulp of air and laughed hysterically. ‘This is going to sound so weird, but … I think we’re in London!’

‘What?!’

Liam’s eyes opened wide. He wobbled in the air and laughed. What else could he do? He always laughed at things he didn’t understand. And this just couldn’t be explained. One minute, they had been in the map room, playing with the globe. And now …

Now everything was dark again. Liam grabbed his sister’s hand and screamed.

Finally, Mrs. Kernick spoke again. ‘I have something to tell you. Now, I don’t want you to be scared, but ...’

Matilda and Liam listened to what Mrs. Kernick had to say. Then they dropped their plates to the floor.

‘What are you doing?’ growled Zelda. ‘Where are you taking us?’

The woman smiled. She had taken off her hat and sunglasses now, and Sam thought she had mean eyes. There was no warmth in her smile. It made him shiver.

Let’s Read: Kevin’s Journal

Hi, guys! I want to tell you about what I do every day.

In the morning, I wake up early and get ready for school. I eat breakfast with my dad. He works from home, so he makes me breakfast. Next, I get dressed. I wear my favorite shirt every day. The last thing I do in the morning is to feed Bucky. Sometimes I forget, and dad gets mad. Then he feeds Bucky for me, so don’t worry!

I take a yellow bus to school. It picks me up from the corner. My friend Jason takes the same bus, and we sit together in the back. He sits in the window seat, and I sit next to him.

At school, I have a class meeting first. We listen to the school news on the speakers, and we say the pledge of allegiance. Then, our class has math and English. Then it is time for the best part of the day – lunch! We eat our lunch in our classroom, at our desks. Jason’s mom packs his lunch for him.

We have recess and play on the playground. I love to play wall ball during recess. We have three more classes after lunch.

After school, my mom picks me up and takes me to karate class. After karate, I go home and do my homework. My brother helps me a lot with my math homework. My sister, Jasmine, likes to help me with my English homework.

In the evening, I help my parents cook dinner. I make pasta, rice, hamburgers, and lots of other things. We eat dinner together and talk about our day.

At night, I have a routine to get ready for bed. I go to the bathroom, take a shower, brush my teeth, and wash my face. I put on my pajamas and get into bed. I listen to stories to help me fall asleep.
