REC BOARD NEWS

Hello Neighbors,

It is quite a honor, privilege and pleasure to serve this beautiful community of ours. I thoroughly enjoy working side by side with such talented and pleasant board members, volunteers and employees. I am grateful to all of them. It has also allowed me the opportunity to meet the great owners who live in our community.

As an active member of the Board, I have seen incredible improvements both aesthetically and financially, which makes it a better place for all of us to enjoy while increasing our property values.

It is also very exciting to know that more positive changes are coming as we speak, such as the long overdue new fence being installed around the maintenance building on 30th Court, As well as the final payment on the Rec District Bond, which will result in a lower monthly user fees.

Along with the above, the owners share the privilege of receiving all the benefits afforded to us by the State as an Independent Recreation District. We have also Increase revenue from several different areas, such as advertising, entertainment, venue rental, and parking space rental for boats and other vehicles.

Finally, owners are beginning to bring their Rec Fees current thanks to the new collection agency we contracted with. They offer their service at a minimal charge and have recouped over $100,000 in bad debt for the District. Our new Clubhouse Access Software allows us to screen out past owners who have sold their condos but continue using our Rec facilities. This software also allows us to deny membership access to present owners who are delinquent on their accounts.

To all our residents here at SLP4— have a safe and amazing summer and I look forward to continuing serving our community for as long as I am able.

Respectfully.

How can I get help with credit card debt?

One of the first things you should understand is that your credit card debt is not a character flaw. Most retirees aren’t using their charge cards for frivolous purchases. They’re using them out of necessity. The second thing you should do—if you haven’t already—is learn how to create and stick to a budget. A budget won’t change your income, but it will help you better manage the money you do have. Finally, know that while it can be challenging, it is possible to get your credit card debt under control.

Contact your credit card companies

Falling behind on your payments can leave a lasting, negative impact on your credit. That’s why the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends reaching out to your creditors to explain your situation. Don’t be shy about asking for help, Many credit card companies are willing to work with you when you demonstrate a good faith effort. And this is even more true during COVID-19, when some are granting credit card debt forgiveness in certain specific situations.

Before you pick up the phone, you’ll want to be as prepared as you can be. That includes reviewing your income and expenses in advance and figuring out how much you can reasonably afford to pay back each month. Be ready to explain why you can’t cover your minimum monthly payment(s), and when you think you might be able to resume doing so.

When you do make your calls, here are some questions to ask:

• Do you have a forbearance program? If so, do I qualify

• Can I make a payment every other month?

• Would you consider reducing my interest rate?

• What other flexibility do you offer?

Once you agree to any new terms, be sure to get them in writing. And remember: if the idea of calling your credit card companies makes you anxious, the worst thing that can happen is they’ll say no.

Understand the two ways to pay off credit card debt

Often called the “snowball method” and the “avalanche method,” these two debt reduction strategies take a slightly different approach. If you’re someone who’s motivated by small successes, the snowball method could be a helpful way to get your credit card debt under control. In this approach, you first pay the minimum monthly balance on each of your cards; then, you apply any extra money you might have – even if it’s just a few dollars –to the card with the lowest balance. Once you pay that card off, you add what you had been paying on it to your monthly payment on the card with the next-lowest balance. Each time you do this, your payments get bigger… just like a snowball rolling down a hill. Plus, you can feel a real sense of accomplishment each time you check off a card that you’ve paid.

The avalanche method also involves paying off your credit cards one at a time. However, you prioritize their order based on interest rate, not balance. You’ll start by paying the monthly minimums on each of your cards; then, you’ll apply any extra to the card with the highest interest rate. Once you pay that card off, you add what you had been paying on it to your monthly payment on the card with the next-highest interest rate. Although this likely means it will take you more time to eliminate your credit card debt, it also means you’ll pay less in the long run because you’ll be saving on interest.

Consider a debt management plan

Typically offered through a certified credit counselor, a debt management plan (DMP) consolidates your credit card debt into a single monthly payment. Your counselor will:

• Work with you to determine how much you can pay each month.

• Negotiate with your credit card companies to adjust your repayment terms.

• Accept your monthly payment and distribute it to your creditors.

A debt management plan eliminates the need to juggle different payments and due dates. It can help you meet your debt obligations without worrying about late fees and harassing calls from debt collection agencies. While a DMP can be a powerful tool to help you get your finances back on track, it’s also not for everyone. Learn more about the pros and cons of a debt management plan so you can decide whether it’s a good option for you.

The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence.

The tradition of setting off fireworks on the Fourth of July began in Philadelphia in 1777, during the first organized celebration of Independence Day. Ship’s cannon fired a 13-gun salute in honor of the 13 colonies. The Pennsylvania Evening Post reported: “at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.” That same night, the Sons of Liberty set off fireworks over Boston Common.

JULY 4 CELEBRATION

NOTICIAS DE LA JUNTA

Queridos amigos y vecinos,

Respetuosamente.

Common types of allergies that can get worse with age

FOOD ALLERGIES

Until recently, doctors considered a food allergy a condition that predominately affects children. However, incidences in older adults is rising worldwide. The higher risk of food allergies in this age group stems from:

• atypical functioning of the immune system, which can result in elevated inflammation

• increased permeability in the intestinal tract, meaning more substances may pass from the intestines into the rest of the body

• negative changes in the gut microbiota, which can negatively affect the immune response and increase inflammation

• more deficiencies in antioxidants and nutrients the immune system needs for typical functioning

HAY FEVER AND ASTHMA

An older 2011 reviewTrusted Source states that physiological and anatomical changes in the nose, such as weakening of the septum, occur due to aging. This may worsen symptoms of hay fever that occur when people experience a hypersensitive reaction to pollen or other environmental substances they are exposed to.

Symptoms of hay fever may include:

• runny nose and nasal congestion

• cough

Evidence indicates that other changes due to aging may worsen asthma. These may include a progressive decline in lung function and weakening of breathing muscles. Asthma symptoms may include wheezing and difficulty breathing.

As people age, the skin loses hydration and becomes dry. According to researchTrusted Source, this can make a person more susceptible to allergic reactions in the skin. Triggers of skin reactions may include various substances, including:

• dust mites

• pollen

• food

ANAPHYLAXIS

Older adults may be particularly vulnerable to severe anaphylaxis due to certain risk factors, such as having co-occurring health conditions. Triggers may include food, medications, and insect bites. As people age, they are less able to cope with anaphylaxis because of conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels, such as high blood pressure.

TREATING ALLERGIES

Treatment depends on the type of allergy but does pose a greater challenge in older adults. Diagnosing the allergy and differentiating it from other conditions may be difficult and delay treatment. Once a doctor diagnoses an allergy, co-occurring conditions and ongoing medications may limit treatment options. These factors can cause harmful effects on the allergy itself or lead to negative interactions with allergy medications. More research is necessary to determine optimal allergy treatment for older adults. A 2017 review suggests that regular exercise may reduce allergies. It improves the following, which can influence the body’s response to an allergen:

• immune function

• heart and lung function

• muscle strength
