Celebrated California-based artist Heather Day makes abstract paintings comprised of scraped, smeared, and flooded pools of pigment. The compulsive energy of her work oscillates between rehearsed abandon and careful restraint. Her encompassing murals, large canvases, and intimate drawings study the mechanisms of sensory perception — mining what happens when the body interprets a sound as a texture, or a scent as a color.
Day has collaborated with both Facebook and Google, creating virtual and augmented reality works that bridge the gap between art and technology. Her work is held in the private collections of Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Fidelity Investments, Chicago Philharmonic, The Ritz-Carlton, Seoul Hospital, JCrew, AirBnB, Dropbox, Warner Brothers, Facebook, Youtube, and Google.

“This project gives me the ability to tie two worlds together. I can bring my practice of painting to a digital environment and push the concept of controlled chaos further. This installation gives the pools of pigment, the arc of paint droplets, the bands of color, and all the elements that comprise my work the freedom to grow and evolve across a digital canvas. It will act as a living mural, unique to each viewer and the moment they share with it.”
Heather’s art takes into account the critical context of the community that surrounds it. The color palette and LED brightness of her work changes to match the time of day, dawning with vibrant color in the morning and settling into deep, calming pools of color in the evening. It acts as a living mural, unique to each viewer and the moment they share with it, while addressing ambient brightness for community members in the neighborhood as well as drivers on Wilshire Boulevard.
