Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School

HEADMASTER'SFOREWORD
This year’s show, Guys and Dolls, was an enormous undertaking, involving twelve pupils as members of the cast, twenty-nine in the chorus and fifty-seven in the crew (be it stage management, set design, costumes and props, or sounds and lights) – almost 10% of the pupils in the school as a whole Add to this the nine teachers involved in direction, production and orchestration, not to mention the support staff who oversaw ticketing and day-to-day administration, as well as numerous parents and Old Vaughanians who came along to help. The show exemplifies the dedication and talent of our pupils and staff, and the continued support of the wider community The three nights of performances were a testament to the collaborative effort and commitment of everyone involved It was particularly noteworthy to see the Sixth Form cast and crew supporting the Lower School pupils, fostering a strong sense of community
This school’s successes stem from the strength of our community, founded on our Catholic ethos and shared aims The best and most recent example of this is our Schola Cantorum's participation in the D-Day celebrations in Normandy Their performance served as a moving tribute and underscored the importance of historical remembrance in our education We are also proud that this term our SEND Department has received the SENDIA award This accolade recognises the department's commitment to providing exceptional support and inclusivity for all pupils, ensuring that each individual receives the necessary assistance to succeed academically and personally
Isn’t that in many ways precisely what Catholic education is? A vindication of our capabilities, a celebration of community, and embracing the School motto Amare et Servire And that applies too, as I am sure even the briefest perusal of the pages of this Termly Review will show, to the school as a whole Throughout the Termly Review, you will find evidence of the comprehensive Catholic education we provide, from community events to academic successes Despite the significant challenges facing state education, we remain committed to offering as many opportunities as possible for our pupils
Thank you for your continued support We wish you a restful and peaceful summer break and look forward to welcoming you back next term. And to those in their final year at the Vaughan, we wish you the very best of luck in your future endeavours and encourage you to please stay in touch You are, and always will be, a very valued member of the Vaughan community
Paul Stubbings Headmaster

In May, Douglas C, Daniel O, Noah A, and Leo E, First Form Worship Reps, joined 22 Pupil Chaplains from the Saint John Southworth Catholic Academy Trust at Westminster Cathedral for a retreat day
Led by SJSCAT Lay Chaplain Caroline Moulinet, the day included a history talk about Saint John Southworth and a tour of the Cathedral
After lunch, pupils discussed the Trust's values of 'Dignity, Service, and Perseverance' in groups The retreat inspired pupils to uphold these values in their schools
Thanks to Caroline Moulinet and Westminster Cathedral staff for an enriching and inspiring day.

At Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School, our Catholic ethos is at the core of school life from the Lower School through to the Sixth Form This term, our Sixth Form attended their ceremonial Leavers Mass service before the start of the public examination period and schools within the Saint John Southworth Catholic Academy Trust joined to attend our Foundation Day Mass, bringing together pupils, staff, and families in a collective expression of faith and unity
A highlight of this term was the Pupil Chaplain Retreat Day at Westminster Cathedral, where pupils from seven schools within the SJSCAT engaged in reflective discussions on the values of 'Dignity, Service, and Perseverance' and explored the historic and spiritual significance of the Cathedral
In May, the month of Mary, we were honoured by a special visit from Very Rev Fr Toomey (OV 1989), who spoke to our Worship Reps about the Rosary's significance He also led a virtual rosary session for our alumni, connecting past and present Vaughanians in a shared moment of prayer and reflection

TheCardinalsShineatBlytonPark
This term marked a memorable milestone for our Lower School pupils as they participated in their first race at Blyton Park with their Greenpower kit car This is the first time that The Cardinals have driven the car outside of school and it proved to be a robust and well-engineered car that outlasted many of its competitors on the track, a testament to our pupils' hard work and guidance from the Sixth Form team and Engineering department
Whilst our team narrowly missed out on a top spot in the F24 race, the day at Blyton Park was not just about racing, it was about learning, collaboration, and having fun The pupils raced well and worked as a team, embodying the school's values and setting a positive example for others This event also highlighted the strong relationships within our school, with pupils from all years inspiring and encouraging each other

We hope those who came enjoyed the evening Thank you again for your generosity and support
DEVELOPMENTOFFICE
We are writing to you with an update from the Love & Service Fund Thanks to your generous monthly donation and the contributions from most families at the Vaughan, we have raised over £400,000 for the Vaughan Association this year. These funds are fundamental to continue providing pupils with the first-class Catholic education we have a legacy of offering and continue to offer
Government funding does not account for our 2 Fives (five classes and the five additional teaching hours per class at A-Level) It doesn’t account for our investment in the highest qualified teachers that train through our top-rated teaching school. It doesn’t account for our offering Classics & Latin at GCSE, or our liturgical choir, the Schola Cantorum, or many of the top-of-the-range facilities and equipment we have in our STEM department Ultimately, you do, our community These are the things that make the Vaughan exceptional, but they are not a given And it is certainly not possible without your support This is the impact of your donations
In September, the Vaughan will celebrate its 110th Anniversary After the death of Cardinal Herbert Vaughan, the third Archbishop of Westminster, an appeal was made to raise funds to found a school as a memorial to him Some £20,000 was subscribed and in 1914 the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School opened its doors to its first 29 pupils Our school is therefore an institution founded in philanthropy
10 years ago the state sector faced a financial crisis and Cardinal Vaughan was one of the front runners in launching the largest, most ambitious fundraising campaign of a state Catholic school with the Love & Service Fund. Thanks to support from our community, this was phenomenally successful and transformed the Vaughan by inspiring our families to give in new and extraordinary ways
Together, we continue to overcome challenges and create a nurturing environment that fosters growth and learning Thank you for being an integral part of our school’s journey. We wish you all a restful and enjoyable summer break and look forward to welcoming you back next term with renewed enthusiasm and shared goals
Thank you once again for your support It’s hugely appreciated and absolutely integral to the Vaughan’s continued success
With best wishes, The Development Team
