FOREWORD As another momentous year, our 110th, draws to a close, we can look back on a period of notable success and achievements. It began with us being named by Which School Advisor as the UK’s top comprehensive school based on the 2024 GCSE results, as well as – rather wonderfully – being ranked one of the country’s happiest secondary schools by The Times. We secured a 98% happiness rating, based on data collected by Ofsted.

In October, the school was rated Outstanding by the Catholic Schools Inspectorate, and we are obviously delighted that our core function has been recognised in this way.

We also launched our CVMS CX campaign, with the aim of raising an additional £110,000 to focus on three key areas: maintaining our enhanced teaching provision, restoring the chapel to its central role in the school and refurbishing the lavatories. I am pleased to say this campaign has been successful and you will soon start seeing material upgrades and improvements to the fabric of the school.

There have been many firsts this year: we have seen the school’s first pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi, the first Schola Cantorum tour of Australia, and the first appearance of the First-15 in the quarterfinal of the National Vase Competition. An extra special debut was that of Vaughan alumnus Tom Fetherstonhaugh (OV 20112016) in the Proms, conducting the .................

Fantasia Orchestra at two concerts at the Royal Albert Hall. Founded in 2016 by Tom himself, the 28-piece Fantasia Orchestra is formed of some of the country's most exciting young musicians. What made this particularly special was the fact that, ten years prior to this, Tom had performed in the school’s Centenary Celebration in 2014, again at the Royal Albert Hall.

In the classroom and beyond, Vaughanians have enjoyed some wonderful achievements: Fr Michael Toomey (OV 1982-90) blessed the Blessed Carlo Acutis shrine in Ardfinnan; Upper Sixth Form pupil Lucas Gebrehiwet played a trumpet solo at the MOBO Awards with British rapper, Bashy; our Lower Sixth Form pupils completed a total of 8,264 hours of service; twelve Lower School pupils performed in the Royal Opera’s Turandot; 84 First Form pupils (an astonishing ⅔ of the year group) represented the school in football fixtures – and then there is the small matter of Georgia Hunter-Bell (OV 201012) winning a bronze medal in the 1500 metres in the World Athletics Championships in China to match her Olympic bronze in Paris last year!

There has been great sadness too, caused by the deaths, in close succession, of two greatly respected and much-loved teaching colleagues. October saw the sad passing of Mick Ashworth, who taught History at the school for 22 years from 1990 to 2012. He has the singular honour of being universally recognised by those with whom he worked, and by those who were lucky enough to have been taught by him, as being, unarguably, the best teacher with whom they had ever come into contact. .....

That may be quite a claim, but it not hyperbolic: having worked with him for many years, I share their opinion. A born communicator with charisma to match, he took pride not in his own achievements, but in those of his pupils.

Mick dedicated his entire life to Catholic education in the broadest and truest sense of the term: and his was a life well spent.

A mere month later, we were rocked to the core when Áine Foley finally succumbed to the long illness against which she had struggled with such stoic strength. Áine was a quintessential Vaughanian in so many ways: she taught here for 22 years, in which time she had been a Head of Year in both the Sixth Form and the First – an unparalleled combination which illustrates the breadth and range of her expertise – and spent the last six years as the Head of the best English Department in the country. (That too is quite a claim, and it too is not hyperbolic.) On top of that, all her brothers (one of whom was also the Head of the First Form too) attended the school, as does her son: the Foleys are a Vaughan family through and through. Áine had subject knowledge in abundance, was prodigiously hard-working, and cared equally prodigiously about the pupils. And all of this was innate, in the fabric of her nature. We miss her very much.

So we salute our departed colleagues and, remembering at all times with gratitude the part they played, we get on with the never-ending business of moving forward. With that in mind, as you now know, the Governors have made the excellent decision of appointing Mr Cosgrove, the Deputy Headmaster, to the ...

position of Head of School from September 2025. Mr Cosgrove will take responsibility for the day-to-day leadership and management of the school and will be the principal point of contact for pupils, parents, and staff. I shall take on the role of Executive Head, focusing on setting the strategic direction of the Vaughan and ensuring that all we do remains firmly rooted in our Catholic mission and values.

Leadership has always been one of Cardinal Vaughan’s great strengths. This new structure will preserve and build upon that strength, enabling us to meet the opportunities and challenges ahead with the same clarity and confidence that we have always shown. With that said, though, please enjoy reflecting on the highlights of 2024/25. Thank you once again for your continued and indispensable support: without it, very little of what you are about to read would be possible.

CHAPLAIN’S HOMILY It was with a little trepidation that I led the 28 pupils and four teachers into the chapel of the Convent of San Damiano just outside Assisi in April of this year. We had arrived a couple of days before on our pilgrimage of hope for the Holy Year.

Everything had gone well, but I knew the Fathers who cared for this sanctuary we were visiting really liked silence from the pilgrims to respect the holiness of the place. It was where St Francis had his wondrous encounter with Jesus Christ, who spoke to him from the crucifix hanging there – ‘Francis, rebuild my church’. We were to go into the very chapel where this happened, and I asked the boys to kneel quietly and pray in this holy place. And that is just what they did!

There was no talking or whispering. No fidgeting or movement. For several minutes we were all praying, absorbing the holiness, stillness and peace of this chapel. It was a beautiful moment for us ......

A few days later, we were in Rome and, of course, visited St Peter’s Basilica. You will have seen so much of this church as the background to the Funeral of Pope Francis and the Inauguration of Pope Leo XIV. It is a splendid place, and, in a very different way to San Damiano, holy. You cannot fail to absorb its history, beauty and sheer magnificence. Its holiness is founded, literally, on the tomb of St Peter.

We concluded our pilgrimage in one of the crypt chapels of St Peter’s, really close to his tomb, and again there was a wonderful and holy atmosphere as we all brought our hopes for the future to God. One of the aims of pilgrimage is to visit Holy Places. Any of us who have been to Lourdes, Fatima, Rome and, happier times, the Holy Land will know this. It is, perhaps, easier to listen to God in these places.

Our soul is turned towards him, and our hearts are open to him. But I also hope this – that when you go to your own church, when you come to Mass, when you hear beautiful music, you have a sense of the holy, and maybe you try to listen to God a bit more. Maybe you even have a holy picture or shrine in your home or bedroom where you can listen to God as you pray. Pope Leo, talking to young ........

pilgrims in Rome recently said this: ‘Use this (time) for listening, for prayer, so that you may hear more clearly God’s voice calling you deep within your hearts.

I would add that today, so often, we lose the ability to listen, to really listen. We listen to music, we have our ears flooded constantly with all kinds of digital input, but sometimes we forget to listen to our own hearts and it’s in our hearts that God speaks to us, that God calls us and invites us to know him better and to live in his love.’ * To listen to God, we need holy places, and I am very pleased to be able to announce that, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor and gifts from the CVMS CX campaign and alumni, there will be a beautiful and holy space at the heart of our school. Some of you will have been to the school chapel in the old building for Mass and maybe to pray. It has now been restored and made even more beautiful. It will be a place where anyone can come and listen to God. You will be in the presence of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. It will be considerably quieter than other parts of the school. You can come when you feel stressed; you can .............

come to pray for someone close to you; you can come to give thanks for the good things in your life.

We all need to find the ‘Holy’ in our lives.

To rise above the day to day and rest in God’s love for us. Our Catholic faith helps us to do this in so many ways – in the Mass, in Confession, in the Rosary. In our Catholic churches and chapels, we know we can find the ‘Holy’ – the presence of Jesus Christ. Please use our restored chapel to bring the ‘Holy’ into your life.

This year, The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School celebrated 110 years since its foundation. Here is a look at some of the rich history of the school:

The following pages focus on the past academic year, highlighting a range of activities, achievements, and events that have shaped school life, from academic results and co-curricular involvement to service, leadership, and community engagement. These examples offer a snapshot of the Vaughan today: a school that continues to uphold tradition while adapting to the needs of the present.

As we mark this anniversary, we also look ahead. The Vaughan’s history is not only something to commemorate, but something to build upon. The next chapter will be shaped by those who continue to support and strengthen the school’s mission. With a clear sense of purpose and identity, The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School enters its 111th year with confidence and optimism.

CAROLINE WHELAN On 1 September 1987, the then Mr (and now Father) Tony Pellegrini employed Caroline Whelan as a young teacher of Mathematics, PE and IT. In his twenty-one years as Headmaster, he of course made many appointments, but arguably none of them were as consequential as this. Noone was to know it at the time, but Caroline would go on to run the Mathematics Department, run the Lower School, run the Upper School, run the Sixth Form, become the Associate Head and one of the longest serving members of staff in the school’s 110-year history.

Her career has spanned more than a third of the lifetime of the school itself.

I myself joined the school two years after her and so enjoy the unequalled privilege of having served with Caroline as a colleague for fully 36 years. There is so much I could say about her qualities of wisdom, empathy, indefatigability and profound loyalty to the Vaughan, but cannot improve on the attempt I made in my speech at the end of Mass in celebration of her long and illustrious career at Our Lady of Victories Church, which I reproduce below: Good evening, everyone, and thank you, Bishop James, not only for celebrating this Mass, but also for giving me this opportunity to say a few words about my colleague, Cardinal Vaughan legend and friend, Caroline Whelan. I shall try to break the habit of a lifetime by not going on for ....

too long: as you all know, I’ve got a tendency to discursive prolixity, and the danger’s doubled by the fact that in the case of Caroline, there’s so much to say.

So here's the truth: because Caroline is such a profoundly important person to us all, and because she has touched all our lives so individually in such different ways, it’s not an easy thing to tie the sheer multiplicity of all our individual experiences together; and if I did, I really could go on all night. But I think the first, best, and in many ways the only thing to say to you, Caroline, as a tribute, is to apply to you the epitaph on Sir Christopher Wren’s tomb at St Paul’s Cathedral. It reads: si monumentum requiris, circumspice: if you’re looking for a monument, look around you.

So let’s all look around. We’ll see Mass being celebrated by Bishop James Curry, a past Governor at Cardinal Vaughan, concelebrated by Father Tony Pellegrini, a past Headmaster at Cardinal Vaughan, by Mgr Vincent Brady, a past Chair of Governors at Cardinal Vaughan, by Father Michael Toomey, a past pupil at Cardinal Vaughan, by Father Gerry Skinner, another past pupil at Cardinal Vaughan and, of course, by Mgr Roger Reader, our current Chaplain at Cardinal Vaughan. You’ll see the entire Senior Leadership Team, on which you have served continuously for 28 years, scores of staff and hundreds of parents and pupils, past and present.

If we teachers go into education to change lives for the better – and that’s what we all do – then I say to you, Caroline: mission resoundingly accomplished.

But I’m not going to duck the challenge: I actually am going to try to say precisely why Caroline is such a deeply significant figure in the school’s history and essence – 38 years is 38 years, after all – and to do that, I’m going to talk about someone almost all of you will never have heard of: Miss Agnes Simpson.

Miss Simpson is a deeply significant, but largely invisible character in the school’s history. She joined the staff in 1917, when the school was just three years old, and ran its preparatory department. She taught Latin mostly, and elocution to the junior boys and retired in 1960 – fully 43 years after she first arrived – and so she’s one the very, very few members of staff to have served longer at Cardinal Vaughan than Caroline. Which is saying something.

This is what the Headmaster wrote about her in the Vaughan Magazine when she left: Generations of boys have reason to be eternally grateful for the way in which under her wise guidance they were led swiftly and painlessly forward to those high standards of good manners, good taste and scholarly work which characterise the successful Vaughan boy.

Her colleagues in the staff-room had the highest regard for Miss Simpson as a leading member of the teaching staff, who discharged a full programme of duties in a boys’ school with a brilliance and competence which won the admiration of them all. Successive Headmasters, school inspectors and others in authority repeatedly expressed, both in public and in private, the highest .....

opinions of her rare and remarkable skill in the junior classroom.

Miss Simpson leaves behind her here a well-established tradition of sympathy, care and understanding in the Junior School, which represents her abiding contribution to the life of the Vaughan.

She takes with her the warm and affectionate good wishes of us all for every happiness in her retirement.

Now leaving aside the fact that we have girls in the Sixth Form now, and that Caroline has been based in the Upper School for some time (but she was Head of Lower School too – obviously), this tribute could have been written entirely for her: it applies to her precisely.

Now Miss Simpson is Caroline’s historical mirror image, her obverse – the other bookend – and with her 43-year career, she was the school’s first matriarch.

Caroline is the latest. Together their careers span 81 years – 74% of the school’s entire history.

But there’s more than that: Miss Simpson left a mere two years before the arrival of Father Tony, who would go on to be the school’s fifth Headmaster. And Caroline was appointed by Fr Tony and worked under his leadership for 10 years. So these three Cardinal Vaughan legends, Miss Simpson, Father Tony and Caroline herself, for whose career we give thanks this evening, have lived Cardinal Vaughan lives which, barring a mere five years, sequentially span the entire history of the school.

Caroline: you embody everything that is noble about teaching, and everything that | 12

is good in Cardinal Vaughan. It’s no wonder that in this school, love and service is not just some empty tag. How can it be when a woman of your strength and integrity has loved and served here for 38 years? So you may be retiring, but come September, you will not have left, and actually cannot leave Cardinal Vaughan: you will only have moved chronologically through it. Your essence, like the essence of those greats who went before you, and among whom you will now take one of the top places, will carry on animating the school for decades and beyond. That will be your legacy.

And I end by simply saying, on behalf of us all here: thank you.

A YEAR OF CATHOLIC LIFE Catholic life at The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School continues to be central to the formation of our pupils and the wider school community.

At the start of the school year, we welcomed new members of our community to the school with Masses for the First Form and Lower Sixth. Gathering together and attending Mass affirms the importance of the Catholic identity at the heart of school, providing a foundation for the year ahead and reinforcing the values that underpin the school’s Catholic ethos.

A highlight of the year was our Foundation Day Mass held at Westminster Cathedral, commemorating 110 years since the school’s founding. This Mass, celebrated

by His Eminence Cardinal Nichols in the cathedral built by his predecessor, Cardinal Vaughan, was a fitting tribute to the school’s heritage and mission. The occasion brought together pupils, staff, parents, and alumni in marking a significant milestone in the school’s history.

Throughout the year, pupils had multiple opportunities to pause, reflect, and pray.

In October, our pupils were invited to pray the Rosary in the School Chapel with Mrs Evans, Head of Religious Education, and Caroline Moulinet, SJSCAT Lay Chaplain. Similarly, during Advent, the school community engaged with a Digital Advent Calendar, offering daily reflections that encouraged a renewed focus on the true meaning of the season.

The school also joined the wider Church in celebrating the Jubilee Year of Hope.

This theme was reflected across various activities, including charitable fundraising, collective worship, and group reflection.

Hope has not only been a theological focus but a lived experience, expressed through service, pilgrimage, and community engagement.

In a historic first for the Vaughan, pupils and staff undertook a pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi. The itinerary included visits to sites of major spiritual significance, such as the tomb of St Peter and the Basilica of St Francis. The pilgrimage provided a unique opportunity for prayer, learning, and reflection.

Four pupils also volunteered in Lourdes, participating in service to children with disabilities as part of the wider Catholic community. This is a resounding example of how Catholic Social Teaching encourages pupils to demonstrate faith in action, extending beyond school and to make a positive change in the world.

This year, the school’s engagement within the Saint John Southworth Catholic Academy Trust continued to deepen.

Pupil Chaplains attended a retreat day at Westminster Cathedral alongside peers from across the Trust, and the school participated in a joint Mass to celebrate the Feast of Saint John Southworth.

Additionally, a Recollection day for parents and carers was held at Tyburn Convent, providing a space for community engagement and spiritual reflection.

The year concluded with a more personal Mass to mark the retirement of Caroline Whelan, whose dedicated service and leadership have made a lasting contribution to the life of the school. The celebration was a fitting end to a year of profound gratitude, reflection, and shared faith.

We extend our sincere thanks to Monsignor Reader, the School Chaplain, and Caroline Moulinet, SJSCAT Lay Chaplain, for their continued spiritual guidance and support throughout the year. We also wish to thank all our visiting priests who have generously given their time to the school community. Their presence and ministry remain integral to the spiritual life of The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School.

A YEAR OF ART This has been a great year for Art at The Vaughan, with pupils from all year groups impressing us all with their creativity and skill. Our pupils have had exciting opportunities to partake in workshops, collaborations, and visits to galleries. Our A-Level pupils attended the Michael Craig Martin exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts: they had the opportunity to take part in workshops with specialist artists and were given a guided tour of the artist’s work, delving into critical analysis of the meaning behind the work.

First Form Art Club and Second Form Art classes took part in an exciting collaboration with the Science Department and Nazareth House earlier in the year to raise awareness in regard to sea life and sustainability. The Coral Reef project highlighted the importance of ensuring we care for our environment and in specific oceans. First Form Art Club crafted a range of sea life from recycled materials, including a pom pom coral reef, toilet roll lobsters, a huge plastic bottle turtle and a carboard octopus. Alongside this, Second Form pupils created tie dyed and printed recycled fabric pieces, taking inspiration for the artist Yellena James.

Once again it has been wonderful to see so many of our Lower School and Upper School pupils take part in competitions and fundraising opportunities for the school’s community. We started the year with our annual First Form Christmas card competition, and then had the Christmas stall at Portobello Market, where pupils from the First Form to the Sixth Form took part in creating arts and crafts for the stall, which raised £122 for Aid to The Church in Need and also for materials for the Art Department. Pupils from all year groups also took part in the national Royal Academy of Art, Young Artist’s show competition earlier this year.

We had the fantastic news that Alek H, in Third Form had come first place and Diego S C, in Second Form, took second place in The War Through Children’s Eyes Competition.

This is a national competition, in which young people aged 7-17 are invited to create a piece of artwork (drawing, painting, mixed media or digital) that aims to raise awareness about children who are affected by violent conflicts. Entrants are required to convey to others what it would be like if we had a world without wars, where children can feel safe. Due to the success of these pupils, the organisation donated £200 worth of art supplies to our Art Department! A huge congratulation to both of the boys on their success amongst hundreds of entries from all across the UK.

In school, our First Form pupils have been developing their knowledge and skills of the Formal Elements, first looking at the work of Daivd Oliviera, then exploring the theme of Pop Art and finally learning about “Identity” through the art of Yinka Shonibare.

We have been so impressed by our hardworking, creative Fourth Form pupils, who spent the year developing their Movement and Natural Forms projects and have made some exceptional pieces of artwork! They finished the year by creating individualized pieces of art, ranging from paintings, drawings and prints to sculptures and flip books in response to their Movement projects.

Our Second Form pupils began the year learning about sea life and sustainability, then moved onto studying perspective using both drawing and painting, and finally learning about street art and graffiti, reviewing the work of some of the most famous artists and reflecting on their own social and political concerns.

Our Third Form pupils have been developing their painting, drawing and sculptural skills, have studied Cultural Art in relation to African masks and cultural symbolism, they have also been reflecting on Identity through their analysis of Ah Xian’s sculptural work. Additionally, the Third Form took part in a “Corridor Commission” creating artwork based on the artist Soren Selleslagh for the PE Department.

Last but by no means least, our Fifth Form GCSE and Upper Sixth A-Level pupils have worked so very hard this year to produce individualised projects, which reflect detailed examination of their chosen themes. Our artists love to be inspired by the world around them, and this is an integral element of the creative process - often spurring on new and exciting ideas. | 20

We would also would like to convey our huge thanks to the Design & Technology Department for their support this year, as well as to pupils in the Lower and Upper Sixth who have been such a pleasure to teach. A YEAR OF CLASSICS This academic year has been an excellent one for the Classics Department at CVMS. From outstanding examination results to vibrant enrichment opportunities, our pupils have continued to excel in their exploration of the ancient world.

Our Classical Civilisation provision remains strong, with over 30 pupils sitting GCSE and more than 25 sitting A-Level this year.

2024 results were outstanding across the board. Some particular highlights include A-Level Classical Civilisation where 50% of pupils achieved A–A* (national: 26.8%) and at GCSE Latin where 50% of pupils achieved a Grade 9 (national: 37.8%) and 89% achieved 9-7 (national: 76%). Greek, while smaller in numbers, continues to deliver excellence. This year, 5 out of 6 pupils achieved a Grade 9, putting us significantly above national averages (83.3% vs. 52.8%). A new addition to the department’s academic programme is the introduction of the Intermediate Certificate in Classical Greek (ICCG). All Third Form boys now sit this qualification at the end of their first year studying GCSE Greek. This early challenge has already met with resounding success and this year was no different; all candidates passed with 90% achieving either Merit or Distinction, a testament to their hard work to study a subject off timetable.

together across year groups to explore myth, language, history, and ancient culture in a relaxed and engaging setting.

From learning the Greek alphabet and decoding ancient curses to reconstructing Athenian democracy, these clubs remain a highlight of the week for many.

A particular standout moment this year was in March, when Noah G and Xavier H-P represented The Vaughan at the prestigious Classical Reading Competition hosted at Westminster School. Competing in the Beginner Greek category - this year’s most hotly contested, with nine schools participating - Noah (reading as Odysseus) and Xavier (as Circe) performed an excerpt from Book 10 of Homer’s Odyssey in the original Greek.

Their spirited and emotionally rich performance impressed the judges, breathing life into Homer’s verse. As Mr Scott remarked, “Homer would have been proud!”

With exciting new cohorts already forming for September, and enrichment activities continuing to grow, the future of Classics at CVMS is as bright as ever. Whether through dramatic readings of epic, challenging unseen translation, or lively debates on the ethics of Roman imperialism, our pupils continue to demonstrate intellectual curiosity, creativity, and a love for the ancient world.

A YEAR OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

Coding and Robotics clubs, laying a strong foundation in basic programming skills which will be useful for them should they choose to complete Computer Science or ICT for their GCSE's.

This academic year has been an exciting and dynamic one for the Computer Science department, showcasing a wide range of pupil achievements across all year groups.

Firstly, our Upper and Lower Sixth Form pupils who actively participated in multiple heats of the Bebras Challenge hosted by Oxford University, a national challenge based hackathon. Pupils demonstrated an outstanding understanding of problem solving and computational thinking. Our Third Form GCSE Computer Science club provided pupils with invaluable hands-on experience, where they deconstructed computers using tools to gain a deeper understanding of the internal hardware components, this was an excellent opportunity for pupils to bridge their knowledge acquired from their theory lessons and for them to put it into practice.

In addition to this, posters created by all year groups celebrated computing topics and ideas, with the year ending on a high through our computing-themed activities week trips to Thorpe Park, Ninja Warrior UK, Hollywood Bowls, and a dedicated gaming day— all combining learning with fun to end the year!

Finally, we proudly celebrate the destinations of our Upper Sixth pupils who are going on to study computingrelated subjects at Russell group universities including Cambridge, UCL, KCL, and QMUL. A huge thank you to all pupils for their enthusiasm and dedication this year!

A YEAR OF DESIGN TECHNOLOGY Our DT pupils take advantage of every opportunity we offer as a department and always show their appreciation.

Links with Imperial College have been especially beneficial for them this year.

Our Lower Sixth design pupils, many of whom are interested in engineering careers, were lucky to be invited to watch the graduates present their final research projects and to ask questions afterwards. Makerspace has also been another success with many of our 14– 18-year-olds taking full advantage of the facilities at Imperial both after school and in the holidays. We are very proud of their representation of the school, and we always receive great feedback from Imperial.

Society, led by Patrick K, organised a first year university student to come in and give a talk on what life is like studying Engineering. A particular bonus of this talk was the advice he could give on how to write a personal statement for the top universities.

We were also lucky this year to have a top industrial designer from Joseph and Joseph come in to talk to our A-Level pupils about a career in Industrial Design.

He also left us some of their top products to analyse further. It’s always lovely to have real world representation of the subject and its possibilities.

Mr Corominas Tarres, who runs our Greenpower team, took our Sixth Form to visit Nissan, and they had a very interesting time being shown the intricate modelling process that goes into designing a new car. The Lower School Greenpower pupils have been testing the car in the playground and fine tuning before our races begin again in the new academic ........

A YEAR OF DRAMA Drama at The Vaughan continues to grow and flourish, both in the classroom and with a rich co-curricular offer. This year we introduced A-Level Drama and our first cohort engaged with a wide range of texts and enhanced their practical skills. Pupils studied Machinala 1920s expressionistic play by Sophie Treadwell- alongside Caryl Churchill’s formally inventive Love and Information.

They worked on these texts with a practical focus, imagining themselves as actors, designers and directors. The year culminated in their first practical assessment; pupils reinterpreted A Servant of Two Masters, Vinegar Tom and The Comedy of Errors in the style of German theatre visionary Bertolt Brecht.

These highly successful performances were filmed at the Drama Studio of St Paul’s Girls’ School and were enhanced by the professional setup provided.

Our GCSE course is now well established and provides a much-needed opportunity for practical work, complementing more desk-bound subjects. Fifth Form pupils performed scenes from diverse range of textsincluding Journey’s End, Julius Caesar, Waiting for Godot and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead- before preparing for their written exam. The Fourth Form explored Sabrina Mahfouz’s adaptation of Noughts and Crosses, creating design concepts and learning rehearsal techniques. They then created their devised pieces, inspired by a stimulus. .........

These pieces were innovative, often witty, and genuine pleasure to watch.

Third Form had a thorough introduction to GCSE Drama: they studied musical theatre, choral movement, DNA by Dennis Kelly and the work of Brecht and Stanislavski.

Co-curricular drama continues to develop with weekly drama clubs and frequent performance opportunities. ALevel Drama pupils were treated to a backstage tour of Mountview, gaining a valuable insight into the variety of careers available in theatre. Lower Sixth pupil, Emmanuel Q, who hopes to train as a theatre designer, visited the National Theatre and was able to watch some of the technical rehearsal for a new play, The Estate. Pupils took part in workshops led by practitioners from the Bush Theatre and the Young Vic. Eight First and Second Form pupils took part in a collaborative project with other local schools culminating in a performance of a devised piece about the River Thames. There was also considerable success for Vaughan pupils outside of school: Edward S, Daniel W and Toby Y (Fifth Form) were all accepted into National Youth Music Theatre’s Summer Season, while Jonathan O (Lower Sixth) gained a place at the prestigious National Youth Theatre.

Once again, we took full advantage of the wonderful theatrical opportunities afforded to us as a school in central London, and saw a diverse range of professional productions. A-Level and GCSE pupils watched Our Country’s Good (Lyric), Waiting for Godot (Theatre Royal Haymarket), Wolves on Road (Bush Theatre), Metamorphoses (LAMDA), The ....

LeftBehinds (NT Touring), Dear England (National Theatre) and Machinal (Mountview). In addition, a visiting theatre company came in and performed The Tempest for the whole third form.

Afterwards, Third Form Drama pupils took part in a Q&A and workshop with the director and actors.

Our Lower School Play- Tuesday by Alison Carr- took place in March. Twentyfour pupils performed this sci-fi inspired text about an ordinary school and an alternate universe. Miss Nutt directed and was ably assisted by Fourth Former Kaelan O’S throughout the rehearsal process. Kaelan and fellow Fourth Former Patrick D also assisted Mr Cardozo with lighting and projection during the performances.

Finally, Sweeney Todd, this year’s summer musical was a resounding success. It was the culmination of a huge amount of effort from both staff and pupils onstage and backstage. The collective effort was really something to behold and, once again, demonstrated the power of collaboration between music and drama.

A YEAR OF GEOGRAPHY As the academic year draws to a close, we take a moment to look back on the exciting and meaningful experiences that have defined our Geography department. From engaging guest lectures to immersive fieldwork, our pupils have explored the subject in depth, gaining valuable insights into the world we live in. Join us as we revisit some of this year’s standout moments in Geography.

Iceland Adventure February half term saw 30 of our A-Level pupils embarking on a memorable trip to Iceland. We explored the island’s dramatic landscapes, witnessing firsthand the powerful geological forces at play. Highlights included standing on the fissure between the Eurasian and North American Plates, relaxing in the Secret Lagoon, witnessing 30m high geyser eruptions, exploring the rift valley at Thingvellir National Park, climbing the ice at the Sólheimajökull glacier terminus and climbing to the top of Skógafoss waterfall.

From geysers to glaciers, this trip was not only educational but also an unforgettable adventure that brought textbook concepts to life.

Fieldwork: Bringing Geography to Life Fieldwork is a cornerstone of our Geography curriculum, providing pupils with practical experience and the opportunity to apply their learning in realworld settings. Our First Form pupils enjoyed visiting Kew Gardens in November to investigate microclimates. .......

This trip allowed them to understand how different factors influence climate on a small scale, enhancing their observational and analytical skills. The Fourth Form undertook two days’ worth of fieldwork in May to investigate both human and physical geography. At Rushall Farm, they measured changing characteristics and flood risks along the River Pang, gaining insights into fluvial processes and flood management. Another trip to Kensington & Chelsea focused on investigating the quality of life, allowing pupils to assess urban environments and social dynamics.

Our Lower Sixth pupils have engaged in multiple fieldwork days to prepare them for their NEA independent investigations, where they have learnt and practiced a wide range of data collection and analysis techniques. We spent one day in Kensington & Chelsea and another at the Olympic Park in Stratford to investigate regeneration, inequalities and healthy high streets. Our 3-day 2-night residential trip to Nettlecombe Court was a highlight, where pupils investigated coastal processes and management at Porlock Bay and Minehead, examined place perception and the impacts of regeneration in Taunton, and measured infiltration rates within the centre’s grounds. The pupils also enjoyed evening tuition on GIS and the use of statistics to aid their future studies for the NEA and in the classroom, as well as playing football and badminton on the lawn in the sunny evenings.

targeted. This success is attributed to the weekly interventions we start in September for our Fifth Form, focusing on tricky content and exam skills to ensure our pupils are well-prepared and confident.

Our A-Level pupils conducted a range of exciting coursework projects, reflecting their diverse interests and the comprehensive nature of our curriculum.

Topics included investigating the impacts of the Gentrification of Balham, examining the impacts of coastal management at Minehead, and evaluating the environmental success of the regeneration of the London Docklands.

Co-curricular opportunities In December, we attended the Hazards Geography Conference which was an inspiring and informative experience that significantly deepened our understanding of this dynamic area of study. Through engaging talks from renowned experts such as Martin Degg, Cameron Dunn, and Kate Stockings, we explored a wide range of topics—from the physical processes behind volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis to the complex human responses and strategies for hazard management. The speakers shared the latest developments in the field, enriching our knowledge with cutting-edge research and global case studies that brought key concepts to life. The event ...................

also introduced us to a wealth of new and relevant examples that will strengthen our exam responses, while reinforcing and extending what we’ve already covered in class. It was a valuable opportunity to connect academic theory with real-world application, leaving us more confident and better prepared for future assessments.

Sustainable Development Goals Course Complementing the conference, all our Sixth Form Geography pupils have completed an online course led by Columbia University on the Sustainable Development Goals. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of globalisation’s impacts and the international responses to these challenges, equipping our pupils with a global outlook and a deeper understanding of sustainability.

This year has been great for our Geography department. From hands-on fieldwork and outstanding academic achievements, our pupils have embraced every opportunity to deepen their understanding of geography. As we look ahead, we are excited to continue fostering a passion for geography and preparing our pupils to think critically about the world around them. A YEAR OF HISTORY This academic year has been a busy one for the department with lots of trips and activities, for pupils across all year groups.

The Sixth Form politicians have had the opportunity to look at politics in action at both a local and national level. In October 2024, the Upper Sixth visited Kensington Local Council for Local Government Week, where they had the opportunity to tour Kensington Town Hall and learn about the structure, roles and responsibilities of local government in RBKC. Pupils also had a Q&A session with the Civic Mayor and took part in a mock council meeting with several of the local councillors. The following month the pupils visited the Houses of Parliament where they took part in a unique once a year, Learn with the Lords Session, and had a tour of the Supreme Court including a mock case in one of the courtrooms. At the beginning of July, the Lower Sixth Form Politics pupils visited St Paul’s Girls’ school for a conference on whether the European Union is a superpower. Led by Sir Malcolm Rifkind, former MP and Cabinet Minister and Dr Magdalena Frenhoff Larsen, Associate Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Westminster.

itinerary across four days in one of the most historically significant cities in the world. The pupils visited sites relevant to both Weimar and Nazi Germany and the Cold War, including the Berlin Wall and the Stasi Museum. Pupils also had the chance to reflect on the atrocities of the Holocaust on a visit to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp.

Finally, was a visit to HMS Belfast for the new First Form pupils, which has become a regular staple of the Summer School.

This rounded off two weeks of engaging activities for the incoming First Formers to get to know each other. On this trip, the pupils got to interact with one of London's most engaging museums - a decommissioned warship - and learn about its role in D-Day. A YEAR OF MATHS This year has been another busy year in the Maths department, with many pupils taking part in a range of competitions and the enduring popularity of our Junior, Intermediate and Senior Maths Societies.

The biggest competitions in the international maths calendar are the UKMT Maths Challenges. These multiplechoice papers are designed to test the creative thought of our budding Mathematicians.

It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency to make pupils think.

Over 300 pupils, from First Form all the way to Upper Sixth took part at the Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels.

From this, are two follow-on rounds, Kangaroos and British Maths Olympiads. .....

We had 2 pupils take part in Olympiads this year, placing them in the top 1.2% of the tens of thousands of pupils that take part, an outstanding achievement. In total, 18 pupils qualified for Kangaroo rounds, 27 pupils won Gold certificates, placing them in the top 10% of participants, 63 won silver and 107 won bronze. In preparation for these competitions, First and Second Form pupils were able to take part in webinars from leading Mathematicians, including bestselling author Simon Singh, MBE and Aylien MacDonald, Mathematician and artist.

Further Maths pupils took part in the Maths Olympiad for Girls in October, a particularly challenging paper requiring long-form answers to complex problems.

All pupils who took part were awarded a certificate of merit, placing them in the top 40%.

Fourth Form pupils took part in a careers webinar run by the Advance Maths ................

Support Programme. They heard from people from a wide range of careers, who shared how they used Maths in their jobs.

This included a finance apprentice with Rolls Royce, a software engineer and a Hydrographic surveyor from Storm Geomatics. The boys engaged well and asked insightful questions of the panellists, which allowed them to see the links from the maths they learn to a variety of real world applications.

Over 100 Lower Sixth Form pupils heard inspiring talks at the annual ‘Maths Inspiration’ lecture series in Reading. They heard from Dr Colin Wright on the surprising mathematics behind successful juggling tricks and were able to create a new and unique juggling trick using Mathematics. Zoe Griffiths, spoke on numbers in the news and how to spot misleading statistics and Katie Steckles gave a lecture titled ‘The Mathematics of Life’. The series was hosted by Matt Parker, award winning Mathematician and

comedian.

Lower Sixth pupils had many further opportunities to hear from academics in a series of Maths Lectures hosted by St Paul’s Girls School. Topics included vectors, research methods and the congruent number problem. Second and Third Form pupils travelled to Tiffin’s boys school to take part in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge, where they had to collaboratively use their Maths skills in live, fast-paced competitions.

Similarly, a team of boys from each year in the Third Form to the Upper Sixth took part in the prestigious Hans Woyda competition, led by Mr Cardozo. The Hans Woyda competition is a timed and challenging head-to-head competition against other leading schools in London.

A YEAR OF MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES The MFL department has had another busy and successful year this academic year.

September saw the celebration of European Day of Languages with our yearly French breakfast, quizzes and games for First Form. Other year groups took advantage of different foreignlanguage activities during form time, the launch of the National Translation Bee competition for Second Form (more about that later) and a design competition open to all year groups.

Throughout the year, we’ve continued with our Lunchtime Languages Lab, run by Ms Rayment, and our Spanish club run by Ms Fernandez.

Boys have enjoyed practising their language skills in a more relaxed, informal setting, using the computers to access the various online language-learning platforms we subscribe to as well as learning more about the culture of France and Spain.

Our Sixth Form language ambassadors have been doing extra speaking work with our classes across the Lower School to give them more opportunity to speak in French and Spanish and we have valued the support they have given the younger members of the school.

Pupils in Fifth Form benefitted from weekly intervention sessions with their teachers and also practised for their speaking exams with our Lower Sixth linguists.

The National Translation Bee was launched in September with various preliminary rounds being held in school.

Two of our Second Form pupils, Ayuki F and Rufus S, went on to represent the school in the regional final of the National Translation Bee in May. Our talented translators were among 63 pupils from other schools all of whom reached this stage from an initial pool of close to 4,000 entrants across London. We will be entering again next academic year and look forward to further success from more pupils!

June saw two trips, one to Paris for Lower Sixth and one to Valencia for Third and Fourth Form Spanish pupils. In Paris, pupils visited the city’s historic landmarks, visiting the Basilica of the Sacré Cœur, the Eiffel Tower, the Panthéon and the Palace of Versailles.

Pupils had plenty of opportunities to practise their French and enjoyed soaking up all the culture Paris has to offer.

Our inaugural GCSE Spanish trip to Valencia took place right at the end of the national heatwave in Spain and pupils experienced temperatures of 42 degrees!

The boys undertook a walking tour of the .....

city centre, visiting the Mercat Central and the Torres de Serranos as well as going to the impressive Ciutat de las Arts i les Ciències and to Lake Albufera for a boat trip and to try some traditional paella. They also practised their Spanish, ordering food and drinks with confidence.

The end of the academic year culminated in another trip – this time, a day trip to France by ferry where boys visited the Nausicaa Aquarium and beach in Boulogne-sur-Mer and got to sample the delights of Carrefour and the Cité d’Europe.

A YEAR OF MUSIC The past academic year has been one of considerable accomplishment for the Music Department, marked by a wide array of performances and an unprecedented level of musical engagement, including tours further afield than ever before. We have enjoyed a period of exceptional strength, particularly in the standard of instrumental music and the record number of pupils enrolled in A-Level Music has significantly contributed to the excellence demonstrated by our ensembles and bands throughout the year.

We have also had the pleasure of working alongside former Vaughan music pupil Alessandro MacKinnon, who has served with distinction as our Music Assistant over the past year. Alessandro has been an outstanding colleague, demonstrating great diligence and professionalism in all aspects of his work. We extend our best wishes to him as he embarks on postgraduate studies in composition at the Royal Academy of Music.

Their previous visit in 2019, when their boys were hosted by Vaughan families left a lasting impression. We hope one day to visit their school set in the beautiful mountains of KwaZulu Natal.

This spirit of collaboration extends to our wonderful parent community as well. I would especially like to thank Mrs Yates, Mrs Ybarra, and the many other parent volunteers who have generously supported our events. Your involvement makes a meaningful difference, and we are deeply grateful.

In October, the Schola welcomed visiting pupils from Dilworth School in New Zealand.

Together, they presented a beautiful joint concert at St John the Baptist Church, Holland Road. In July we were similarly privileged to perform alongside the Young Voices of Melbourne, an outstanding youth choir from Australia. These international collaborations remain a highlight of our musical year, and further such partnerships are planned for the coming academic year.

The performance calendar began early in the academic year, with the Schola and Senior Brass Ensemble bringing great dignity and musical splendour to the school’s celebration of Foundation Day at Westminster Cathedral in early September.

Shortly thereafter, our pupils participated in a memorable concert at Southwark Cathedral, performing alongside singers from Eton College, Westminster School, and Drak

performances by the First and Second Orchestras, the Sixth Form Choir, the Concert Band, and the Schola. The School Choir’s rendition of John Rutter’s Gloria was a particular highlight. As always, the concert was among the best-attended events of the year, and we are sincerely grateful for the continued support of our parent community.

The Christmas season brought with it a full calendar of festive performances. Boys sang carols at numerous venues, including the Tower of London, Brown’s Hotel, The Dorchester, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, and—most hearteningly—a return to the retirement home Nazareth House in Hammersmith, our first visit since the pandemic. A particularly exciting moment came when Classic FM invited the boys to launch their Christmas season, singing live to the nation early one Monday morning.

The Sixth Form musicians delivered a memorable carol concert at St John the Baptist, Holland Road. A welcome new addition to the calendar was a live performance of The Snowman, accompanied by a screening of the film.

The event sold out three times and proved immensely popular. We are pleased to confirm that it will return this coming Christmas.

Shortly after returning from the Christmas break, our pupils took part in our annual collaboration with Southbank Sinfonia, our professional orchestral partners. Together, they prepared and performed Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5—a work of immense emotional and technical complexity. The resulting concert at St John’s Smith Square was an superb achievement, and a testament to the 41 |

professionalism and ambition of our young musicians.

The annual Music Competition once again attracted an exceptional field of entrants, with eight preliminary heats leading up to a highly impressive final held in March. I had asked Miss Watkins to draw upon her remarkable network to invite adjudicators, and throughout the term we were honoured to welcome a number of distinguished guests. Foremost among them was the adjudicator for the Grand Final, the internationally renowned British conductor, Sir Mark Elder.

Sir Mark spoke eloquently about the vital role of music in education and offered generous praise for the outstanding standard of performances. The Junior Competition was won by Matthew d T, while the Senior Competition title went to Jimmy C, whose powerful interpretation of a Chopin Ballade was, without question, one of the most remarkable performances the school has witnessed in decades.

March saw the Spring Concert, held once again in the beautiful Wathen Hall at St Paul’s School, featured excellent performances from both junior and senior ensembles. The Big Band has enjoyed a particularly strong year, performing at the Senior Citizens’ Christmas event and headlining their own evening concert in March, joined by several accomplished alumni vocalists. The Big Band Evening is always a joyous occasion, and we encourage all parents and supporters to attend next year.

Mr Motley continues to lead with great distinction across his work with the Concert Band, Sixth Form Choir, and the academic music curriculum. The Summer Term began with a return to St John’s Smith Square for a concert marking the Vaughan’s 110th anniversary.

Though not on the same scale as the Centenary Concert held at the Royal Albert Hall, this was nonetheless a celebratory and memorable evening. The Schola has enjoyed another rich and active year.

Its most significant undertaking was the choir’s two-week tour of Australia in February, during which they performed in Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. The choir sang in some of Australia’s finest cathedrals and concert venues, giving concerts and singing liturgies that were both spiritually and musically uplifting. It was a truly unforgettable experience for all involved.

A YEAR OF SPORT Once again, we are sat here reflecting on the past academic year, and I am thrilled to report on so many outstanding achievements and pupil involvements in Vaughan Sport over the last ten months.

As a starting point, I would like to thank all of the pupils who commit in such high numbers, on evenings and weekends throughout the school year. I would also like to thank the staff who make the same commitment outside of school hours, at both training and fixtures, as well as those who have made contributions to this report. Without the commitment of both pupils and staff, we would not be able to provide the opportunities we make available for our pupils. One of the biggest thank-yous goes to Keith Brett, who volunteers an astonishing volume of time and effort to provide hospitality for home fixtures at Twickenham. Lastly, I would like to thank the parents who support us with our sport provision in a variety of ways.

From attending fixtures and supporting on the touchline, helping in the kitchen and clubhouse to provide the post-match hospitality at Twickenham, and in some cases, supporting the teachers with leading certain sports and teams throughout the year, your support is very much appreciated.

This year has seen a record number of pupils representing the school in competitive school sports. Competitive fixtures have taken place in football, rugby, netball, cricket, athletics, cross country, basketball, rowing, Gaelic football and badminton. We cannot report on every one of these, but this report gives a comprehensive overview of a variety of sports and demonstrates the positive impact that PE and Sport has on pupils at the school. At The Vaughan, sport is about more than results, it is about shared experiences and memories that last a lifetime. However, as you will see as you read on, the high levels of participation and opportunity provided lower down the school, naturally leads to greater success and improving performance levels for sport teams as pupils progress through the school.

Football continues to attract huge levels of interest and participation across the school. There are not many schools around that have as high a percentage of their pupils regularly participating in competitive school football at weekends.

In the Lower School, over 70% of First Form pupils participated in matches on Friday afternoons. The U12A team progressed to the quarter final of the Middlesex Cup, an impressive achievement considering the minimal ...........

time they had played together in the early rounds of the competition. This team finished the season with a record of 9 wins from 16 matches, very commendable and a good foundation for future years at the school.

The U13 teams had a good end to the season, with wins against UCS, St Benedicts and Chiswick School. The A team also showed a strong ability to find the back of the net, scoring 30 goals in their 13 matches. Although results on the pitch for the U14 and U15 age groups went against us, arguably this could be attributed to the high number of pupils committing themselves to weekend sport and therefore giving so many pupils the opportunity to participate.

remarkable achievement that highlights the consistency, talent, and determination of our senior footballers.

After narrowly losing the final 2-1 in the previous two years to St Ignatius College, Enfield, the team faced Richard Challoner School in a closely fought final which proved to be a truly memorable climax to the season.

A cornerstone of this success has been the dedication shown at weekly training sessions at Club de Sport in Acton every Tuesday evening. Over 60 Upper School pupils regularly attend, demonstrating commitment, discipline and enjoyment.

This has contributed to a strong team spirit across the 1st XI, 2nd XI and 3rd XI’s, that extends both on and off the pitch, and pupils have consistently represented The Vaughan with distinction and maturity across the school year. Having almost 50 pupils play in a 9:00am kick off against St Benedict’s School on one ...............

Saturday morning, is an example that speaks volumes about the culture of responsibility that our pupils embody.

The 1st XI played 21 matches this season, recording 11 wins, 4 draws, and 6 defeats.

The standout performance came in the Middlesex Cup quarter-final against Northolt High, a team which trains near on full time as part of QPR’s Colleges team.

Despite going a goal behind, The Vaughan came back to win 2-1, thanks to two goals from Asier M. The team’s discipline, determination, and will to win were exemplary. Though the 1st XI were unfortunately defeated in the subsequent semi-final, the players showed great character throughout the competition.

The season concluded in early May with the long-awaited London Schools Catholic Cup Final at Enfield Town FC. Having beaten St Thomas More School in the semi-final, The Vaughan faced ..................

Richard Challoner, who had themselves defeated St Ignatius on penalties. The final was a tense and physical encounter.

After falling behind, Zak Z equalised before half-time. A second-half goal from Asier M put the Vaughan ahead, but Challoner responded late to send the game into extra time. With just minutes remaining, Joe D’s corner led to a dramatic winner, sparking jubilant celebrations from players and Sixth Form supporters alike. Captain Sam C lifted the trophy, sealing a thoroughly deserved 3-2 victory and a historic triumph.

Across the senior teams, more than 50 pupils represented the school this year.

Special recognition must go to Mr Secker and Mr O’Reilly, who took charge of the 2nd and 3rd XIs respectively. Their commitment to rotating players fairly and maintaining high standards ensured all ensured all pupils had the opportunity to contribute meaningfully.

This proved to be a very positive season for our school rugby teams. Whilst results are not the overarching metric, it was still gratifying to see our teams playing over 80 fixtures and winning almost 75% of games when results from tournaments are factored in. More pleasing was the progress shown by all our age groups and the significant number of boys participating. On some weekends we fielded up to 10 teams and had over a 140 boys participating.

There were some great highlights including the U12s who won all their games apart from the Middlesex Schools Cup Final. This ended in a very narrow defeat to Hampton School. This placed them second in the Middlesex Schools Competition and later in the year they won the Middlesex Rugby 7s Plate Competition. The U13s also enjoyed the notable achievement of finishing third in the Middlesex Schools Festival.

The U14 and U15 age groups have shown great progress this year, with special thanks to Mr Sturt for his efforts with the U14 squads. The number of pupils participating in this age group is very pleasing to see, and is a recipe for future ....................

success in the sport as they progress towards the senior rugby age groups.

Both age groups have shown considerable progress especially in the technical aspects of the game and I anticipate that many boys will make the step up to senior rugby next year from the U15 team.

Finally, on the rugby front, the 1st XV also had a very notable season in which we enjoyed our longest run in a national cup competition in the school’s history. The 1st XV reached the National Vase quarter final following wins over UCS, Southend Boys High School, London Oratory and Tiffin, before losing to a very strong side from St. George’s Weybridge. The fixture against Tiffin was memorable for the tremendous support that the boys enjoyed from the 150 spectators. This was the only defeat of the season. It is customary to honour the achievements of our Upper Sixth pupils who will be leaving us this year, and the very strong leadership group of captain Tadhg F and co-vice captains Ciaran L and Dimitri K deserve particular credit for their influence over the outcomes of games. be sadly missed as we progress to next season. At scrum-half Oliver W-R used his speed and skill to great effect to release the powerful centre combination of Ander C-Z and Antoine W. Antoine deserves particular credit for his leadership role in the back line. It was also great to see a comeback season for Thomas A and Oscar M. Sam C also deserves significant praise for his ability to cover all positions in the forwards and for an outstanding and selfless attitude towards the success of the team. Mr Leigh has often reported that this group of young men were an absolute pleasure to lead this year.

This year has seen the CVMS netball programme flourish, with 20 committed Lower Sixth girls training and playing matches. It has been excellent to watch the team grow in confidence, with players representing the school admirably, and enjoyment of the game shining through. It will be wonderful to watch the team continue to grow as players move to the Upper Sixth and are joined by the incoming Lower Sixth girls.

Another memorable performance saw them draw 11-11 with St Benedict's School, fighting back from a 10-8 deficit in a tense final quarter, showcasing excellent resilience and morale.

These performances are even more impressive, considering the team is comprised of Lower Sixth pupils who are playing Upper Sixth opposition in most instances. Rose W was an outstanding shooter this year, rarely missing a shot with excellent movement in the circle. Similarly, Marina M led the mid-court with confidence and was an overwhelmingly positive presence. . .....

The 2nd team had an equally good season, often performing better than final scores may suggest. They always showed enthusiasm and a love for the sport. They scored a fantastic 9 goals against Ursuline High School, with standout performances from Leonor G and Valentina F, both of whom have improved hugely since the start of the year. The 2nd team have been exemplary in their attitude, with players constantly supporting one another and embracing each challenge with high spirits.

The athletics and cross-country seasons begin in September, which makes our first notable performance even more impressive as some of the pupils had only just arrived in the Sixth Form. Our Senior Girls had a second-place finish in the London Schools Cross Country, and our Senior Boys qualified for the regional final of the Cross-Country Cup. On the track, it was our Intermediate Boys who had the most success by qualifying for the regional final of the Track and Field Cup. Two leavers deserve special recognition here though, not only for the individual achievements I am about to mention, but also for being such good role models to pupils across the whole school in their seven years as Vaughan pupils. Nathan D’H finished 149th in the English Schools Cross Country and Keeran S finished 4th in his 400m heat at the English Schools Track and Field Championships.

On the cricket field, fixtures were organised for three out of four Lower School year groups. A highlight was seeing over 30 Second Form pupils travelling over to St Benedict's, Ealing, to play in a variety of hard ball and soft ball matches. The weather got the better of us .....

on two occasions against West London Free School, however links with other schools are building for cricket, and with the good levels of participation and commitment in the opportunities presented this year, it is definitely an area where increased competitive opportunities will be given in the years to come.

Finally, a new sport to report on in this magazine. The school has had a history of pupils participating in Gaelic Football outside of school, with plenty of examples of national honours too. The final competitive action of the school year saw two Vaughan teams enter the Gaelic Football All Britain Championships for the first time. The U15 and U13 teams contained pupils from across all four Lower School year groups and performed admirably on the day against opposition who have been entering the competition for a number of years. A special mention must go to the U15 team who developed their technical and tactical understanding of the sport throughout the day, to win the Plate competition, which meant the school finished the year with silverware to present at the end of year assembly.

As a final note, we have to finish by bidding farewell to our Upper Sixth leavers across all sports at the Vaughan.

A YEAR OF THE LIBRARY It has been a fantastic year in the library. Since taking over the role of Librarian in September it has been wonderful getting to know the pupils and being part of a school community that is vehemently committed to celebrating reading.

I was extremely fortunate to inherit a library space that had been recently renovated to promote reading for pleasure whilst also providing an area for pupils to focus on their academic work. I have been ensuring that as many books as possible are on display to capture attention and showcase the fantastic stock we have. Some of the most popular titles this year have been ‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins, ‘Gone’ by Michael Grant and Karen McManus' thrillers ‘One of Us is Lying’ and ‘One of Us is Next’.

I believe pupils must have a voice regarding what is included in their library collection. In order to ensure that our collection remains relevant to and reflective of the Vaughan community I introduced the 'I'd Like to See Tree' to the library; pupils and staff are able to write their suggestions on a reading leaf and available material is then purchased termly. The pupils respond well to recommendations from each other, as well as the staff, and it helps foster a sense of community in the library.

on selecting titles for pupils who enjoy Jeff Kinney's Wimpy Kid Series but would likely enjoy, and benefit from, reading something a little more advanced. Ben Davis's Joe Cowley series, for example have been popular additions. Some pupils even finished the whole series in a matter of weeks! Another focus has been acquiring more Manga titles, which are incredibly popular amongst the pupils. It has been great to see that many pupils have been engaging more with the library after borrowing these titles and, in many cases, an appetite for Manga has led to pupils being more enthusiastic about borrowing ‘chapter books’.

In September all the new First Form kicked off the year by choosing a book of their own as part of BookBuzz. Pupils are able to choose a book to keep from a long list of carefully selected titles. The most popular choices this year were 'Running out of Time' by Simon Fox and ‘Steady for This’ by Nathanel Lessore. The pupils had a great time discussing ‘Steady for This’ (and eating cookies) at a lunchtime book club and I was impressed by their thoughtful and insightful observations.

November was 'Non-Fiction November' which was celebrated in the library with a display and the purchase of a variety of new Non-Fiction titles. For those pupils who are not naturally inclined to read for pleasure, reading about topics they are interested in can be a good way to engage them in reading. The most borrowed Non-Fiction titles this year have been ‘Can’t We Just Print More Money’ by Rupai Patel and Jack Meaning as well as ‘Pele: The Autobiography’. I am looking forward to further developing our Non-Fiction collection in the future.

Pupil helpers are an important part of the ecosystem of a school library. It was fantastic that so many pupils were keen to volunteer their time and contribute to the running of the library. So many pupils responded to my advertisement for library assistants that I decided to run a weekly club where we could all work together to make the library a clear and well-organised space. Our main focus has been on adding genre emojis to books so that they are easier to shelve and less likely to get lost.

Pupils from the Lower Sixth have also been an incredible help in the library, assisting with tasks such as shelving and organising the non-fiction collection as well as helping with the processing of new stock. On top of this, another group of pupils from the Lower Sixth have been instrumental in helping to spread the love of reading by volunteering as Reading Mentors. Every Friday morning during form time they meet with a First Former and read with them. They have been so encouraging towards their mentees as well as being impeccably punctual and reliable.

In order to support the cohort of Lower Sixth pupils completing an Extended Project Qualifications in February we visited the London Library of which we are the grateful recipients of a school's membership. Whilst on the trip, Librarians provided pupils with a range of resources and the pupils were free to roam the stacks looking for material to assist with their research. It was great to see how useful many of these resources were when pupils presented their EPQ presentations in the library. The skills acquired on this trip, and the EPQ ...................

What better day to celebrate reading across the whole school than World Book Day which took place on 6th March. The Lower School marked the occasion with a Book Quiz which was won by Second Formers Carlos WR, Fillipo P, Rufus S as well as Martino C from the First Form.

There is never a dull day in the library and over the last year it has been incredibly rewarding to facilitate such a wonderful space. Whether it is honouring requests for books on an eclectic range of subjects from communism to caterpillars, or simply providing a safe space to reset and be mindful, the library is a vibrant hub for curiosity, connection, and calm.

MEET MS HUGHES OUR LIBRARIAN I joined CVMS in July 2024 after completing a MA in Library and Information Studies at UCL. I decided to pursue a career in librarianship after spending much of my time in the library at Goldsmiths, where I completed my first degree in Fine Art and Art History. I am jointly passionate about the capacity of the Library to facilitate both reading for pleasure and research and information skills.

A couple of my all-time favourite books would be 'Rebecca' by Daphne Du Maurier and ‘A Prayer for Owen Meany’ by John Irving. Some of my most enjoyed titles for younger readers are ‘A Good Girls Guide to Murder’ by Holly Jackson, ‘The Reluctant Journal of Henry K Larsen’ by Susin Nielsen as well as anything by the late great Alex Wheatle. I am currently reading ‘Fundamentally’ by Nussaibah Younis and would highly recommend it to older readers; that feeling when you cannot wait to next pick up your book simply can't be beat! | 56

A YEAR OF GIVING It has been an extraordinary year for community service at Cardinal Vaughan, with the Sixth Form demonstrating a deep commitment to compassion, leadership, and the Catholic ethos of serving others. This year, 164 Sixth Form pupils took part in a wide range of volunteering opportunities, contributing a phenomenal 8,264 hours of service to others.

Whether it was mentoring younger pupils, supporting elderly residents, volunteering in hospitals and charity shops, or offering their musical talents to the Church, our pupils gave their time generously and made a real difference.

pupils as Subject Ambassadors, working closely with individuals or small groups to help them understand difficult topics across subjects like Science, Languages, English and PE. Others have taken on roles as Reading and Maths Mentors and volunteered outside of school hours at youth clubs, Brownies, and charity shops. Some gave their time to Nazareth House Care Home or supported patients and staff at Charing Cross Hospital, often providing comfort and companionship to those most in need.

A particularly moving highlight of the year was the participation of Vaughan pupils in the HCPT Lourdes Pilgrimage, where they accompanied and cared for children with disabilities on their spiritual journey.

Among the many dedicated pupils, Benjamin J stands out for his exceptional contribution, logging an incredible 402 hours of community service this year, our highest individual total. He and 58 others have earned Gold Certificates, recognising their outstanding commitment to serving others.

The contributions of our pupils have been met with glowing feedback from across the wider community. The Catholic Schools Inspectorate commented: “There is a vibrant culture of taking responsibility for others as demonstrated by the involvement of Sixth Form pupils with local food banks and supporting younger pupils as subject ambassadors.”

Teachers have also praised the Subject Ambassador programme: “She has been fantastic, working on a one-to-one basis with the pupils and has helped them to understand any theory or practical questions they’ve struggled with.”

“I think the class found it really inspiring to have our best and award-winning engineer in the class. His positivity about their work really boosted them and it was lovely seeing this. I really appreciated the extra help too.”

One pupil commented on the invaluable support of a PE ambassador: “He has been an amazing and supportive person. Even if pupils get sad or emotional, he is always there to support them… he is always there to teach them what to do and to help them learn from their mistakes.”

On the Lourdes Pilgrimage, a group leader wrote: “They proved to be very worthwhile companions on our journey. Watchful, caring, attentive, thoughtful, respectful and so much more… They helped to bring many smiles, all of which brought so much delight and happiness into all our lives.”

The incredible amount of community service work carried out by the Sixth Form this year has been truly inspiring. In giving their time, talents, and energy to others, our pupils have not only enriched the lives of those they’ve helped, but they have also deepened their own understanding of what it means to lead with compassion, humility, and purpose. We are incredibly proud of every one of them and look forward to seeing this vital work continue to flourish.

This academic year, our Future Pathways programme continued to flourish, with a growing number of events, partnerships, and individual successes that reflect both the diversity and determination of our Sixth Form.

These sessions ensure that every pupil receives consistent, highquality guidance across a wide range of topics-from understanding post-18 options, personal statement drafting, and university finance, to interview preparation, CV writing, and career exploration. This regular, structured input is a key part of our mission to prepare pupils to make informed, confident and ambitious choices.

A central highlight of the year remains our annual Mock Interview Evening, held each November. A number of CVMS pupils are currently completing degree-level apprenticeships in technology, finance, and engineering - a pathway increasingly respected and competitively sought-after. Throughout the year, pupils attend assemblies by apprenticeship providers and CVMS alumni whilst also receiving CV and interview guidance and benefitting from our expanding alumni network.

This year, our Lower School pupils have had numerous opportunities to explore the world of work and consider various future pathways. The academic year commenced with enriching trips to locations such as TFL Acton and The Supreme Court, providing aspiring engineers and lawyers with first hand insights into their potential daily tasks. | 60

During our Careers Drop Down Week, pupils engaged in project-based learning experiences. First Form pupils spent the day interacting with professionals and concluded by designing innovative jobs of the future. Second and Third Form pupils were challenged to develop creative business ideas focusing on problemsolving and sustainability. Lastly, Fourth Form pupils participated in an entrepreneurship workshop, where they designed their own restaurant concepts, applying numerical and communication skills to manage finances and present their ideas effectively.

In June, a group of pupils attended the annual Proto Maker Challenge at Imperial College. Over four days, they collaborated with Imperial students to create products addressing current global issues. Utilising specialised equipment and engaging with professionals, they gained practical experience in innovation and problemsolving.

Our Third and Fourth Form pupils also participated in the school careers fair, which offered valuable insights into professional journeys. This event allowed pupils to interact with a diverse range of volunteers, gaining advice and inspiration for their future careers. We extend our gratitude to our alumni, parents, and friends of the school for their contributions to this event, which played a significant role in raising our pupils' aspirations.

A YEAR OF PSHE AND CITIZENSHIP The learning in PSHE this year has been enhanced by a number of stimulating workshops and lessons delivered by visiting organisations. In November, the Third and Fourth Form explored Social Pressures and Teenage Friendships through workshops with the Bloom programme from the charity Mental Health UK, while the Second Form listened to an impactful talk on Knife Crime by St Giles Trust, which successfully brought the seriousness of this topic to life and gave the pupils a better awareness of the risks and outcomes of knife crime.

Through our school nurse and the NHS education programme, pupils discovered facts about Healthy Eating, Hygiene and Body Image and learned how to develop good habits to keep them healthy in body and mind as they grow older. The NHS team also provided lessons on Misogyny & Gender and Healthy & Unhealthy Relationships, which brought important and interesting discussions into the classrooms.

We were especially lucky to have facilitators from the charity 'Tender' visiting the school in the summer term to lead a two-day workshop for 30 pupils from the Fourth Form. The workshop used drama and discussion to explore relationships in all contexts, within families, between friends and in romantic relationships. The boys involved in the .........

workshop appreciated the opportunity to focus on this topic for an extended time, and they gained insight and maturity while working through the material. I was especially impressed by their enthusiasm and confidence in performing an affecting assembly to the rest of their year group at the end of the two days.

Just before the summer exams, several of our Lower Sixth Form pupils had the opportunity to speak to the Lower School about Exam Stress and Study Skills, adding insights from their own recent experience to the advice from teachers.

They also joined teachers in delivering sessions on Personal Finance, Budgeting, Online Safety, Fraud and Fake News, and I was grateful to the Sixth Formers’ commitment to making these lessons entertaining and informative.

The Metropolitan Police also visited throughout the year to give essential information about Crime and Personal Safety to the boys in the First to Fourth Forms. As always, I was impressed by their willingness to answer the often challenging questions from excited pupils, and the wealth of knowledge they were able to pass on.

Our ‘Wellbeing Week’ in February is now a regular fixture in the calendar, with pupils having an opportunity to focus on developing better habits for their mental health and resilience through the ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’ framework. The boys also had fun with the extra activities on offer in the art rooms, the gym, the ‘chill-out zone’ classroom, the ‘cinema’ library and the karaoke room, where they bravely overcame the volatility of breaking voices to briefly fill the corridors with the sounds ....

Finishing the year with a Fourth Form day of exploring Artificial Intelligence, PSHE opportunities continue to range far and wide at The Vaughan, supplementing the timetabled lessons with assemblies and activities that ‘seek the formation of the whole person’ and aim to provide those all-important chances for discussion and discovery.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD Over the course of the year, the Duke of Edinburgh programme at the school has continued to grow and develop.

Firstly, over thirty pupils from the 202324 academic year completed their Bronze or Silver Awards. They should be proud of their success! This academic year, 60 pupils from the Fourth and Lower Sixth Form started their Bronze and Silver awards respectively. Throughout the year, they have all been participating in a wide range of activities for each section of the walk. These include volunteering in the school's Art Department and Library, or their local church, improving physical abilities in water polo, climbing or Gaelic Football, and developing skills in languages, playing musical instruments or baking.

At the end of the year, both the Bronze and Silver groups took part in their respective expeditions. For the Bronze, this meant walking 30km over two days in the Surrey Hills. The six groups planned their routes, carried all their kit, cooked and set up camp together. They showed .......

really impressive skill, understanding and organisation to navigate their routes effectively and complete their individual aims.

The Silver participants completed their assessed expedition in the South Downs.

They spent three days walking almost 20km each day. Each group displayed resilience and commitment to contend with mud, brambles, hot weather and long distances. They worked together to support each other and ensure that all twenty-eight completed the expedition successfully. Afterwards, they presented their successes and achievements from the walk.

Many staff have contributed to the running of the award, but in particular Mr Rumun, Miss Kennedy, Miss Bell, Mr Cooper, Miss Nutt, Miss Hughes, Mr Davies, and Mr McWeeney all gave up at least one weekend to help oversee the expeditions. All the participants deserve congratulations for their commitment and enthusiasm over the year!

ECO CLUB Eco Club members always take their position seriously and this year’s group were no exception. Weekly meetings were pupil led and the job of collecting the recycling from each classroom was performed enthusiastically.

They finished the week off with a donut sale and a movie screening. Eco Club diligently tidied up the popcorn and it was a great evening for all. ‘Green Week’ raised £120 towards our goal of buying new bees for our beehive.

This year Eco Club organised a number of activities for ‘Green Week’ starting with a letter to the Head. Assemblies on how to reduce our carbon footprint and inspirational quotes in every corridor started the week. A making workshop for our Lower School pupils constructing solitary bee homes from waste wood and bamboo was very popular.

Special thanks go to Douglas C in the Second Form who has led the team this year. He is hoping to start a new initiative next term for Addison building, watch this space. | 66

GARDENING CLUB The Lower School Gardening Club has been a lot busier this year. In Spring the boys have planted a hedge. This involved weeding and digging over a strip of soil by Addison Hall. They then planted sixty tree saplings such as elder, crab apple, dogwood, hazel, hawthorn, blackthorn, rowan and dog rose. With the very hot weather lots of watering was needed to keep the plants alive. Hopefully in a few years time we will have a hedge that will increase the biodiversity and bring in more wildlife next to our school.

With an increase in vegetable troughs thanks to extra funding from the Jack Petchey Foundation the boys have planted a variety of vegetables. They have picked the radishes and broad beans so far, and there are still tomatoes, potatoes, beetroot and different varieties of courgette to harvest.

An increase in space to grow more veg next year will mean that even more pupils can sign up to join the Gardening Club.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE This year has been truly momentous for Cardinal Vaughan. We celebrated our 110th anniversary of our foundation with an ambitious goal to raise £110,000 which would allow us to restore the chapel to its central role in the school, refurbish the toilets and maintain our enhanced teaching efforts.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your generous support to our CVMS CX Campaign. Every gift made a difference, and we are pleased to announce we achieved our full target.

Renovation work has already begun this summer and will continue throughout the coming year.

Love and service has been shown by our entire Vaughan community, comprising pupils, parents, alumni, and many other supporters, which underpins a huge amount of our success as a school. We’re so grateful for the way in which our community has contributed to so many successful events during this year, volunteering their time as well as giving so generously.

We would especially like to thank once again our dedicated VPA (Vaughan Parents Association), led by Alex Yates and Tony Mars. Their tireless efforts have supported a wide range of events, from the Carol Service, Quiz and Race Nights to Music Concerts and the Summer Fete.
