A
house built on a solid foundation is a building that becomes a home over the test of time - all the bad and all the good, all the downs and all the ups, all the challenges and all the successes. A solid structure is only the beginning though because a “house” only becomes a “home” when it is filled with love, sacrifice, and faith in something bigger than any one individual. Even when a home no longer houses the family that lived within it, the “family” has the opportunity and responsibility to honor and respect the foundation, the base, the stability that the home provided. As we enter our sixth year as the only Catholic school system in the city of Fremont and Sandusky County we say goodbye to a beloved home; St. Joseph School. For those of you in the area, please continue to support our “home”, our “family”, by sending your children and grandchildren to our reconfigured school system. For those of you who have chosen to move away and build your “home” and “family” life somewhere else, know that the spirit of the school lives on within the students, families, and faculty of the BHCS system. One way you can stay connected to our Catholic school “family” is through our website. We have a “reconfiguration tab” and will be posting pictures of the work being done at our campus locations. Know that the prayers and support of your generous donations do have an impact and that, even though you may live far away, we will always be your “home”. During the course of the 2015-2016 school year you will be hearing more about our new SJCC Junior High Academy, our five “Pillars of Success”, the renewal of our Catholic Identity and strengthened evangelization, and much more. As we move into our reconfigured “home” for next year, we respect, celebrate, and build an even brighter future for our students; the true reason we do all that we do. Tim Cullen
Graduation 2015 Thirty five seniors celebrated their graduation on May 24 with a commencement ceremony in the gym that followed a Baccalaureate Mass at church. Matthew Boyer was the class valedictorian and Kyle Meyer earned the salutatorian honor. Both gave energizing speeches to their classmates in addition to some inspiring words from their principal, Mr. Cullen. Cullen was sentimental about this special group, as they were freshmen when he arrived at SJCC four years ago. Boyer and Tricia Reinhart both earned the Bishop’s Cross, considered the highest award given at graduation. The Class of 2015 enjoyed the day and they will truly be missed!

She currently serves on the boards of Downtown Fremont Inc. and Sandusky County Positive People and also is involved with Rotary of Fremont, the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, Chamber of Commerce of Sandusky County REACH program, Camp Fire USA, and various other organizations and events. Brian Hoffman ‘88 opened his 2nd Jersey Mike’s Sub Store on High Street, across from the Ohio State University Law School in Columbus. 1990’s Micheline Bisson’s ‘94 daughter Savannah was diagnosed with PNET cancer in 2013. She is in remission and doing well. The family wanted to give back to the “Make A Wish” foundation and is hosting their third annual golf outing. Brittney Luc ‘06 is a second year PhD student at the University of North Carolina studying Exercise Science/Athletic Training. She co-wrote a study “Osteoarthritis prevalence following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction;a systematic review and numbers-needed-to-treat analysis” that was published in the Journal of Athletic Training NovemberDecember 2014 issue. The article has been awarded the Clint Thompson Award for Clinical Achievement. She will receive her award at the National Athletic Trainers Association’s convention in St. Louis in June 2015. Carly Smith ‘06 graduated from Ashland University in 2014 with a teaching degree as an invervention specialist. She works for the Columbus School system. Alyse (Gonya) ‘08 and Cory Snider ‘08 were married October 2014. Alyse graduated with a bachelor of nursing degree in 2011 from Bowling Green State University and in 2015 from the University of Toledo with a Master’s of Science in Nursing. She will be working in Northwest Ohio as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They reside in Bowling Green. Sylvia Reinhart ‘11 graduated from Mercy College of Ohio with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She was awarded the “Spirit of Mercy Award” during the commencement exercises.

Making a Difference - Eric Barbour ‘08
Give a Year. Change the World. City Year is an education based non-profit that started up 26 years ago in Boston, MA, around the idea of national service. The organization hoped to provide opportunities for young individuals to give back to their communities. Powered by the idealism of these young AmeriCorps Members, City Year now focuses its energies on bridging the education gap. They have become a vital resource to schools serving large amounts of students who show signs of being at-risk of dropping out. With research from Johns Hopkins University at the core of their approach, City Year Members build mentoring relationships with students and coach them in Attendance, Behavior, and Course Work in both Math and English. Not only are these AmeriCorps Members serving students in need, they are developing as young leaders themselves to continue their service even after graduating the year-long program. I have had the honor and privilege of serving students, schools, and communities in Sacramento, CA, for the past three years. I completed two years of service as an AmeriCorps Member, serving on the Founding Corps Team during City Year’s first year in Sacramento, before moving into a staff position within the organization. While the hours are long (10+ hours/day) and the pay is little ($250/ week stipend), the impact I am able to see on a daily basis is indescribable. During my first year of service, I had an 8th grade student who was failing all six of his classes. After connecting with his father and setting up daily tutoring sessions with him after school (which always ended in 1-on-1 basketball), I was able to see him recognized by his teacher for having the highest score in the class on his math test. He always had the ability, he just lacked the confidence and structure to achieve his potential. At the end of the year, I, alongside his family, had the joy of watching him walk the stage at 8th grade graduation. The stories I’ve experienced in my years of service are truly endless in supply and only augmented by the fact that every year, 2,000 other young professionals across the country are making the same commitment to service that I did. I truly believe in the power of an AmeriCorps Member to #MakeBetterHappen for themselves, for their students, for their schools, and for their communities. My work and service reminds me on a daily basis that “Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve.”
