“Thank You and Please” I know we usually start with a “please” before a “thank you” but for this end-ofthe-year edition of the Voice I wanted to switch it around. • “Thank you” for all of your prayers and positive comments about our school system and the efforts of the staff, students, parents and parishioners. • “Thank you” for all of your hours of volunteering at our schools, fund-raising events, banquets, and other activities like mailing out the Voice! • “Thank you” for all of your monies and donations to help us operate our schools and provide families in need a chance to afford a Catholic education through tuition assistance. • “Thank you” for all of your children, grandchildren and other family members who attend our schools. They are precious and loved. • “Please” continue to get information about our programs and initiatives as we renew our “zeal” for our Catholic schools. We need you to help us tell our story. • “Please” know we pray for you and your needs each and every day. We are humbled by your sacrifices so kids are able to speak of God in school. • “Please” reach out to your friends, classmates, co-workers and ask them to consider supporting the work of our schools and join you in giving back. • “Please” have a safe, relaxing and blessed summer season – We are working to prepare for an even better year in 2013-2014! Graduation 2013
n Sunday, May 26th, the seniors reached the official finish line. With a graduation class of forty students, they were awarded their diplomas in the auditorium following their final Mass in church as SJCC students. Bringing some excitement to the commencement ceremony was graduate Joey Magnuson, performing his version of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” Valedictorian Grace Magro and salutatorian Kristin Sessler captivated the audience with sentimental messages directed towards their classmates. Principal Tim Cullen awarded plaques to students for their excellence in academics, athletics, service, and courage. Board President, Patrick Militello, presented diplomas, and Tim Cullen added words of praise and encouragement to the graduates. Father Mike Zacharias then presented the highest award, the Bishop’s Cross, to Zachary Yeckley and Leah Binsack. After the diplomas were presented, the Class of 2013, led by Class President Kendra Molyet, turned their tassels. On Friday October 4, 2013 at the SJCC Homecoming football game, a special celebration will take place. Thirty-five years after playing in the state semi-final playoff game, the 1978 football team will reunite for what most certainly will be a night to remember! It seems like yesterday when Coach Wonderly had us doing stations, running to the tree and back and practicing on the dusty fields at Sacred Heart. Now here we are, the classes of ‘79, ‘80 and ‘81, coming together for a reunion that I never thought was possible. Several years ago when the Alumni and Friends organization started these celebrations at the Homecoming game, I knew someday our team had to be honored. October 4th is that time! The format will begin with a parade to the stadium with the SJCC band leading the way prior the game. The 1978 team will be honored at halftime in front of a huge partisan crowd. And then, after a Crimson Streaks victory, EVERYONE is invited to the SJCC cafeteria for refreshments, snacks and a short presentation on our magical season. I can’t wait to see, not only the players and coaches, but all the classmates from those years. Where can you get that many classes of SJCC alumni together at one time? Class of 1982 (our “freshman” class) I expect to see you there too! This celebration is not only for the 1978 team but for all us who shared in a special time at SJCC. Bring your family and friends that night and meet our team, families, classmates and friends. We’ll tell some stories, share a few laughs and probably shed a few tears. But one thing I promise you, when you head home that night you will leave with a smile on your face! SEE YOU OCTOBER 4TH!!! Trip of a Lifetime!
Eileen (Kusmer) Gabel ‘40 visits Belgium
In July of 2012, Eileen Gabel had the great opportunity to travel to Belgium with her son Stan ‘67 and his wife to visit his daughter who lives in Waterloo, Belgium. They visited Waterloo where there is a large man-made hill at the battle-site commemorating the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. A lion (representing the Duke of Wellington) sits atop the hill facing France. They spent a day and a half at Bruges - a wonderfully quaint town towards the coast. In Bruges they enjoyed walking the city, taking a boat tour on the canals, and eating and drinking good food and beer! In Brussels they continued sightseeing but really enjoyed relaxing and eating. The highlight of the trip was driving to Viaden Luxembourg. They visited some WWII Memorials. Many were dedicated to the Division in which her husband, James Gabel ‘36, served. It seemed they were meant to stop there. They spent some time in Reims, France - the heart of the Champagne region. The Cathedral and the countryside were breathtaking. Time was spent driving around the vineyards and enjoying champagne tasting along the way. Their French part of the trip ended in Verdun - site of a horrific WWI battle. Seeing the many cemeteries and the grounds where villages once stood, with the blast craters still intact, and being able to walk some of the trenches in which soldiers had fought was very moving. The family also had many side trips to little villages and monasteries famous for their beer making. Eileen and her family will enjoy the memories of this trip forever.

New Weight Room Making Progress
The weight room upgrade was and continues to be an example of a great team effort. Numerous people donated time and resources to make it a success! Jon Will, Brad Harman, Paul Grahl, and Eric Buettner kicked it off by cleaning and priming the room. Pat Militello (donated paint),Vince Militello and Bob Foster(donated supplies), Pete & Paul Naderer (re-upholstered weight benches), Chris Hirt, Jim Borer, Jim Carmack, Justin Carmack, Todd Bickley and Pete LeJeune finished the painting and moved the equipment. There were also numerous student athletes led by the new senior class that helped. Of course, all of the equipment upgrades would not have been possible without the funding provided by the Booster Club. This is only the start of the facility improvements and provides a solid base to improve upon!

The CEDF’s independent Board of Trustees carefully invest the funds it raises. These funds are managed in accordance with the fund’s Articles of Association. 1940’s Rosalyn (Mosser) ‘46 and Jerome Freeh ‘47 celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary April 18, 2013. 1950’s Gloriann and George Ehrman ‘52 were married on September 28, 2012 in Tucson Arizona. Rosalie (Young) Dupont ‘56 and Tom Rollins were married June 8, 2013. Jenny Rose (Bebow) ‘61 and Kenneth Binder ‘59 will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary June 29, 2013. They have four children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandsons. Jerry & Rosie Freeh 1960’s Fayanne and Gene Ochs ‘60 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 1 by renewing their wedding vows at St. Wendelin Catholic Church. They have one daughter, two grandchildren and twin great-grandchildren. 1970’s Theresa (Miller) and Stephen Smith were married May 11, 2013. Bob Molyet ‘79 has been hired as the head football coach at Xavier College Prep in Desert Springs, California. He was the previous head coach at Jesuit College Prep in Dallas. He and his wife Darcy will be moving to California in July. 1980’s Cristina and Michael Ronski ‘86 are relocating to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia to continue Ken & Jenny Rose Binder their careers with SC Johnson & Sons Co. 1990’s Stacy (Woodruff) George ‘90 and Skip George welcomed son Paul Connor February 16, 2013. Jennnifer (Hoffman) Geyer ‘92 was conferred a Doctorate of Philosophy in General Psychology from Northcentral University January 31, 2013. Jennifer is a Psychology Professor at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. 2000’s Matt Gabel ‘00 graduated on February 28, 2013 from the Toledo Police Academy. He is currently in the Field Operations Division and patrolling the streets in Toledo. Elise and John Ryan ‘00 were married June 9, 2012. John recently completed his license and is now a registered architect in Ohio. Patti (Kreilick) ‘01 and Andy Skinner welcomed daughter, Sophia Charles on June 11, 2013. Bob Molyet Jenny (Gabel) ‘02 and Scott Moyer ‘01 welcomed twin sons, Carter and Mason March 22, 2013. Kristie Bilger ‘02 has been named Downtown Fremont Inc.’s new Executive Director. Spring Sports Wrap UP New coach Robert George guided the boys’ baseball team to a 15-14 finish. Although the season started out shaky, the team rebounded by mid season and went on an eight game winning streak. Senior Zack Yeckley had an outstanding season, leading the team in both hitting and pitching. Fellow seniors Jacob Wurzel, Brett Michael, Matt Macielewicz and Alex Chlosta rounded out a solid line-up. A Sectional championship completed a fine season.

Amanda Binder Finishing as MAL champions and making their third straight Regional appearance, the girls’ softball team finished another memorable season. New Coach Pat Bastidas led the girls to an incredible 21 straight wins! A strong group of senior leaders, Brennan Reardon, Kristin Sessler, Cassidy Frank, Jensen LeJeune and Amanda Binder, combined with strong pitching from sophomore Be Reardon made this record-breaking season a thrill for the dedicated Streak fans!
A hard-working group of underclassmen comprised the boys’ tennis team. Although there were no seniors on the team, juniors Nick McNair, Ben Selvey, Jacob McQuistion, Hunter Harrison, Aaron Burns and Jacob Hahn rounded out the team. The team did not fare well, but there was a lot of individual success and each team member showed much improvement throughout the season.

The boys’ track team completed another fine season. Senior Joey Fisher led the team, making it all the way to Columbus to compete in the State meet in the 300m hurdles. The 4 x 200m relay consisting of Fisher, Alex Veleba, Mitchell Gonya and Matt Fox, did well throughout the season, just missing out on a State berth. Long jumper Luke Stierwalt was also a consistent contributor to the team. Fisher, Veleba, Stierwalt, and high jumper Sam Picciuto will surely be missed next season.

Sprinter and hurdler Katie Blohm led the girls’ track team to a successful season. Joined by fellow seniors Leah Binsack, Cara Tiell, Veronica Calvillo and Michaela Rutherford, their strong leadership helped the girls place high in every meet. Katie Blohm Blohm made it all the way to the Regional finals in both the 100m and 300m hurdles, narrowly missing the State tournament. A strong group of underclassmen will return next season.
