Congratulations 2011 Graduates! “You are only going to have your youth once, enjoy it!”, BHCS superintendent Dr. Richard Facciolo, advised the 70 seniors during this year’s graduation ceremonies. He also challenged them to take three things from their time at SJCC--”commitments to their faith, family, and friends.” Leading the class were Valedictorian Sonya Kwiatkowski and Salutatorian Alison Streacker. The next five highest ranking graduates were Danielle Molyet, Benjamin Zyski, Paul Wendt, Parker Rutherford, and Anne Beaschler. Graduates earning the highest subject averages were Ailish Masterson--Art, Sarah Engeman--Music, Sonya Valedictorian, Kwiatkowski and Alison Streacker--Spanish, Sonya KwiatkowskiSonya Kwiatkowski -English, Math, Science, Social Studies. The Achievement Award went to Derek Batey. Of special note is the fact that forty-two of the 70 graduates were offered nearly $2.3 million in scholarships. Special Awards given during the ceremony were The Bishop’s Cross to Sylvia Reinhart and Jeremy Durbin, Excellence in Religion Award to Sonya Kwiatkowski and Parker Rutherford, Honor Award for Outstanding Loyalty and Service to Alexander Burns, Thomas H. Rimelspach Memorial Award to Anne Beaschler, Sara Barbour Memorial Award for Courage to Amber Eakin, Alumni & Friends Award to Danielle Molyet, Robert Smith Outstanding Male Athlete Award to Brant Reardon, Ethel Smith Outstanding Female Athlete Award to Lindsay Weickert. Thirty seniors were presented the Excellence in Conduct Award. Salutatorian As a special gift to their peers, seniors Lindsay Weickert and Parker Rutherford performed Alison Streacker a rendition of Stevie Nicks’ “Landslide”.
Streak of Genius...Mrs.Cori Foos By Jensen LeJeune ‘13 Students and faculty have experienced many changes at SJCC in the past year. New faculty members joined the SJCC family and they have made an impact on the students and staff. One positive addition to the staff is Mrs. Cori Foos. Mrs.Foos is the new guidance counselor who contributes her talent and energy to SJCC. Mrs. Foos graduated from SJCC in 1997 (Cori Bruchs). She was also the Homecoming Queen her senior year. She made a lasting impression on SJCC, but SJCC had an even bigger impact on her. While in high school, Mrs. Foos’ mother (Deb House Bruchs) died and she struggled with this great loss. During this difficult time, Mrs. Foos sought the advice of her guidance counselor, Karel Oxley. Oxley helped her deal with her grief and accept her loss. Oxley encouraged Mrs. Foos to remember the good memories she shared with her mother. Oxley’s compassion and support influenced Mrs. Foos to pursue her education at Kent State University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education with a specialty in Language Arts and a Masters of Education in School Counseling from Bowling Green State University. Since graduating from college, Mrs. Foos has been very successful. She married Tony Foos (1987), and they have three wonderful girls: Savannah, Kate, and Isabelle. She and her family enjoy spending time at their cottage where they boat and share special moments. Mrs. Foos reflects on the importance of her family, “ Tony, a mason superintendent at Mosser Construction, is a hard worker. He is fun loving and enthusiastic. My kids are very entertaining. There is never a dull moment with them. Savannah is precocious and loves to sing. Kate is a very free spirit, and she loves to eat sand! Isabelle is always happy and ready to follow in her big sisters’ footsteps.” Family is a priority for Mrs. Foos, but her commitment to the students of SJCC is also important to her. She worked at Bellevue Senior High School as an English teacher for eight years. After her experience in the classroom, Mrs. Foos decided to fill the guidance counselor position at SJCC. Mrs. Foos comments on this transition, “ Working at SJCC was a personal goal I made while in high school. I wanted to come back to SJCC and help students like Karel Oxley helped me. I have great respect for Mrs. Oxley and I am grateful for the lessons I learned at SJCC. I learned to be grateful for all that I have. I also learned the importance of having respect Mrs. Cori Foos with her family for God, others, and myself. I have also made lifetime friends at SJCC. I appreciate the way in which the SJCC community works together for a common goal. SJCC helped me become who I am today and I am grateful for that!”

This is the message and theme for the Bishop Hoffman Catholic School (BHCS) system for the 2011-2012 school year under the leadership of Tim Cullen, Superintendent of BHCS and Class of ‘81 Alumnus. Please read the following comments and thank you for your continued support! We are at a key turning point in the long and respected history of Catholic education in Fremont and the Sandusky County area. The efforts of the staff and parents and other valued stakeholders are celebrated and appreciated as we continue to build a healthier and vision-driven future for all that walk through our doors each day. Please participate with us. Although SJCC is the focal point for the culmination of the journey and commencement into the bright futures that lie ahead, it only exists through increased communication, collaboration, and alignment with the Sacred Heart (Pre-K through Grade 3) and St Joseph (Grades 4-8) Campuses. Year one of the consolidated school system was difficult and distracted and forced everyone to move from an isolated co-existence to a combined effort to make it work. It is now time to move from a “survival” mindset to a “thriving” momentum. Please support us. Strategic planning, defined budgets and needs-driven allocations of resources, increased accountability and professionalism, and respectful, consistent and honest communication will be the foundation of building our future. We also honor and cherish our Catholic identity – we will not apologize for it and we will promote it with renewed vigor and energy. Please join us. Prayer is our lifeline to each other and generates a powerful energy that flows through our hallways. There are negative people painting a gloomy picture for our future. I believe there are countless others praying, working and dedicating their resources toward our success. Spring sports success!
Two time state high jump champion Brant Reardon! The SJCC spring sports teams found great success on many levels. The boys’ and girls’ track teams were competitive in every meet throughout the season. Capping a successful career, senior Brant Reardon became a two-time State Champion capturing the high jump title and also placed sixth in the long jump. He was joined at State by several members of the girls’ team. Senior Sylvia Reinhart placed fifth in the shot put in her first State appearance. The relay team consisting of Lindsay Weickert, Kelsey i Burkin, Maddi Filliater, and Whitney Drown competed in Tivo Ysas Sonya Kwiatk both the 4 X 100m and the 4 X 200m relays. Burkin also owski became the first female athlete to make the trip to the State meet in four events, running the 100m and 200m dash as well. Making it all the way to the Regional finals, the girls’ softball team also had a record-breaking season. Finishing with a 20-8 record, the girls’ tournament run was nothing short of amazing. Led by seniors Sonya Kwiatkowski, Anne Beaschler, and Kylie Wojdyla, the team had an explosive offense and an exceptional defense. Despite losing three seniors, a talented group of underclassmen will return next season. Several key injuries and a lack of pitching experience hampered the baseball team this season. Strong leadership from seniors Aaron Swint and Ben Zyski, helped the boys pound out a few key victories. Junior Tommy Spader had an outstanding season, leading the team in batting and playing solidly at short stop for the team. Spader and many skilled athletes gained valuable varsity experience which should help them in the years to come. The unusually rainy spring dampened the boys’ tennis season this year. With several meets cancelled, the team struggled to find consistency. Led by seniors Paul Wendt, Kyle Ochs, Parker Rutherford, Nick Wickline, Adam Culbert, Gabe Arreola, James Oddo, David Dixon, and Alex Young the team didn’t accomplish as many wins as they hoped for, but had a lot of fun along the way. After the surveys, the students decide where and whom they would like to shadow. Throughout the planning process, the students learn several important skills. They learn to write a formal resume, cover letter, and thank-you letter. Additionally, they learn interpersonal communications by calling various businesses and setting up meetings to schedule shadowing hours. Also, they practice oral presentations in the classroom as they prepare for their final presentations. Finally, new this year, the 2011 senior class learned to create and present with a Google Site. It is exciting to report that the senior projects have gone digital. Prior to this year, the seniors used project boards that served as their visual aid for the oral presentation. This year, the seniors were taught to create a Google Site in order to help them present what they learned and experienced throughout their

job shadowing. The students in years past have always found unique and exciting places to shadow. This year was no different. Students shadowed at Plumbrook Station NASA, WTOL News Channel 11, The Mud Hens, Stroh Center BGSU, and many more. In prior years, students have shadowed with the Cleveland Indians, The Dallas SWAT team, and even in Washington DC at the Capitol Building! I am proud of each senior this year for their hard work and dedication to the process. My hope is that the seniors have learned from this invaluable experience, and they confidently and successfully pursue their post secondary academic and professional goals. Mike Burkett ‘66 will be retiring December 31 after serving 21 years as Fremont Municipal Court Judge. Mike graduated from the Universtiy of Toledo’s law school in 1974 and practiced law in Fremont from 1975-1991. He plans to remain active with Sacred Heart Parish and numerous civic organizations. Fred Peltier ’67 was named Architect of the Year for 2011 by the Toledo Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Fred began his career in 1974 as a drafting technician in the University Architect’s Office at the University of Toledo (UT). During his tenure at UT he was involved with the construction of 26 new buildings, 11 total building renovations, and hundreds of other building, site, and utility improvements. Richard Faist ’60 was recently honored with the Jefferson Award. Richard has been a volunteer for COMPASS, a public service group that provides inpatient and outpatient alcohol and drug abuse treatment and HIV education and testing, for over 40 years. He is head of the finance committee and serves on the executive board. The Jefferson Award honors people who are doing extraordinary things to better the Toledo community. Tom Giebel ’65, retired after 38+ years as managing director of Kiwanis Manor, Tiffin, Ohio. Tom began his career with the Manor shortly after its opening in 1972.

LouAnne (Young ’74) Barrett was named educator of the year of Beaufort County South Carolina. LouAnne has taught K-12 Art and Spanish at Hilton Head Christian Academy. Tom Hoffman ‘79 was named the first recipient of an honorary associate degree from Terra Community College. Terra president, Dr. Marsha S. Bordner, cited him as ideal candidate for the first honorary degree, “he represents the best in a public servant and in what we value in the students who have taken coursework at Terra. We claim him as one of our own.” she said.

This year’s annual Art & Music Show was a showcase of the students’ many talents. Aaron Zetzer’s still life painting was chosen Best of Show, 2-D along with Kayleigh Wurzel’s place setting honoring artist Roy Lichtenstein for Best of Show, 3-D. There was a tie for this year’s Peoples’ Choice Award between Joey Magnuson’s Dada Style place setting and Grant Cleveland’s abstract “Dale Chihuly” style painting. Other categories such as drawing, print making, ceramics, photography, and mixed media were also represented. The SJCC Art Club also sold student work, such as handmade fused glass jewelry and ceramic leaf plates. After enjoying the beautiful art work the crowd was entertained by the SJCC band and choir, led by Mr. Bill Burkett.
