A Message From The Superintendent Thank God spring is around the corner as we look forward to the events that will culminate another successful school year at SJCC. We must revisit the past to appreciate all that has happened this year. Congratulations to our fall sports teams football, volleyball, golf, soccer, cross-country and tennis for their hard work and dedication that seems to be a hallmark of SJCC students. Special kudos go out to our 2010 football team who enjoyed an exciting and very successful year under Coach Knisely and his staff’s direction. Our students epitomize the term student-athlete both on and off the ﬁeld. Our winter sports provided exciting moments for all those who supported the hard work of coaches and students. Our win/lose record can’t portray the true value of our boys and girls basketball teams. Our swimming provided the school with new records in the boys 200 free relay, boys 50 free, girls 50 free, and girls 100 back. After battling injuries, the wrestling team celebrated a placer at the state meet. We are very proud of their accomplishments. Special recognition goes to the recipients of the 2011 Athletic Hall of Fame. Many of you know them personally and were part of their story. As you continue through this issue of the Voice, please take a moment and review the comments and stories of alums that truly depict the long and storied history and tradition of SJCC. Again, thank you for your support and dedication to SJCC. We are now in the planning stage for registration and academic offerings for next year. SJCC “Reaching Out” Since 1985 By: Ailish Masterson ‘11 Daughter of the late Susan (Masnado ‘83) and Martin Masterson During the Christmas season, family and friends gather together to exchange gifts and spend time with one another. The Pastoral Team of 1985 wanted this tradition to expand to beneﬁt the whole community of Fremont. With the help of former coach Tom Narducci, the idea of Reach Out began and became a reality. Mr. Narducci was the varsity football coach and also a teacher at SJCC through the 1980’s and 1990’s. He joined with the senior class in raising money and collecting food items to be donated to families in need around the community. Then, the day before Christmas break, the senior class packed food into bags and delivered them to 33 families. The seniors were not the only class involved however. The juniors visited with shutins, sophomores sang carols at nursing homes, and the freshmen took care packages to the county jail to make Reach Out a whole school effort. In just one year, the number of families being helped grew from 33 to 76, and by 1987, an astonishing 123 families were given food for Christmas. As the years went by, the community of Fremont continued to receive help from the charitable SJCC student body. body coming together for the greater good of the community. The feeling of fulﬁllment was shared by both the students and the faculty as they joined together in the gym for Mass. Everyone joined hands and formed a circle around the care packages and prayed the Lord’s Prayer in what was perhaps the most powerful moment of the day. Everyone then went their separate ways to bring a little more Christmas joy to those who needed it. Reach Out has expanded outside the walls of SJCC with the support from private donations from local businesses such as Hertzfeld Egg Farm, H.J.Heinz Co., Church and Dwight Co., Streacker Tractor Sales and Knight Law Firm. Because of Mr. Narducci’s desire to help the less fortunate of the Fremont community in 1985, Reach Out has remained a strong SJCC tradition for twenty-six years.

Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees Holly (Wagner) Knisel Knisely With her induction into the SJCC Athletic Hall of Fame, Holly ( Wa g n e r ) Knisely now Holly Knisely ‘98 takes her place with a select group of athletes as she becomes the 14th female athlete to be so honored. During her athletic career at SJCC, Holly lettered four times in volleyball. As a junior she was named 3rd team AllDistrict Six and 2nd team All-MAL. Then as a senior she made 1st team All-MAL, 3rd team All-District Six. She was also named the team’s co-MVP as well as CYO Player of the Year from SJCC. Over her last thee years of varsity volleyball, she achieved 100% serving accuracy - serving 609 straight serves. In basketball Holly earned three varsity letters playing both point guard and shooting guard. In her junior year she earned Special Mention All Northwest Ohio, Honorable Mention District Six, Honorable Mention All-MAL and was the team’s MVP. In her senior year she help lead her team to a 16-5 overall record and 7-3 in the MAL. She was named Honorable Mention All-Northwest Ohio, Second Team All-MAL, News-Messenger Player of the Week, the team’s Co-MVP and earned the OHSAA Scholar Athlete Award. Her senior year three point ﬁeld goal percentage was 48.7%, making 56 out of 115 shots, which ranks 8th in the state record book. After graduating from SJCC, she attended Bowling Green State University where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Health Science in 2002, graduating Magna cum Laude. She then attended the Medical College of Ohio where she earned a Masters degree in physical therapy in 2003, receiving the Dean’s Award for being the ﬁrst in her class. She is employed as a physical therapist for the Herbert-Perna Center here in Fremont. Holly and husband Michael ‘98 have two children, Vivian and Spencer. Todd Drusabck As he is inducted into the SJCC Athletic Hall of Fame, Todd Drusback joins a select few who shined both as athletes and as coaches. He earned

ten varsity letters, three in football, three in basketball and four in track while playing for SJCC. In football Todd played on an undefeated freshman squad (7-0), then as a varsity player he helped the Streaks post a 27-5 record over the next three years. In his sophomore and junior years the Streaks were 9-1, MAL champs and ranked 10th in the AP poll. In his final year of football, he suffered a knee injury in the second week of the season. The Streaks finished 9-1, MAL champs and ranked 3rd in the AP poll. They also made the playoffs again. Todd started in the tournament his freshman year in basketball. In his junior year he averaged 12.1 points per game, five assists and four and a half rebounds and won the team’s Spirit and Dedication award. He saw limited action his senior year due to his knee injury. In track he lettered all four years. In his junior year he finished third in the 100m, fourth in the 200m and the 4x100 relay team finished second in the MAL. His relay team also finished first in the districts, third in the regionals and earned the right to participate at the state meet. In his senior year he came back from his injury to finish third in the 100m at the MAL meet and his 4x100 relay team finished first at the MAL as well as the district and regional meets and fourth at the state meet. As a team the Streaks finished MAL runners-up both his junior and senior years. They were district champs during his junior year and finished third in the district his senior year. Todd attended Michigan State University where he played football from 19901993. He had two knee surgeries and a torn hamstring which hampered his career. He did however play on the MSU Big Ten Championship team in 1990. A f t e r earning his Bachelor of Science degree from MSU, Todd attended Heidelberg College to obtain his teaching certificate. He was an assistant football coach Todd Drusback

at Heidelberg in 1997, at SJCC in 1998 and then became the defensive coordinator at Vanlue high school in 1999. In 2000 he became the head football coach at Genoa. From 2002 to 2005 Todd was the head football coach and head track coach at Edgerton High School. In 2006 he move to Fremont and lead the Streaks on the football field. During his time at SJCC the Streaks were 23-17. In 2009 the Streaks finished 9-2, first in the MAL and captured a playoff berth. He was named MAL and District Coach of the Year in 2009. Currently, he is the head football coach at Rossford High School. Todd and his wife Amy (Vassar ‘95) have three children, Paige, Ellie, and Jackson. Steve Wasserman With his induction into the SJCC Athletic Hall of Fame, Steve Wasserman joins the ranks of those who have found success both on the playing field and in the business world. Steve earned three letters in football from 1969-72 and was a member of the offensive line. He started as a sophomore and never missed a game. The Streaks record during those three years was 1712-1 and in his senior season the Streaks won the SBC title S t e v e was named Honorable Mention All-SBC as a sophomore Steve Wasserman ‘72 and 1st team All-SBC as a junior. He was named 1st Team Defense All-SBC and Honorable Mention All-District his senior year. After graduating, Steve went to work in the banking business and has worked his way to the top of his profession. He is the past senior vice president of Bank One in Fremont, past president of the National Bank of Hastings, Hastings Michigan, past president of the Clyde Savings Bank, past executive vice-president of the Old Fort Banking Co. and is presently the president of the Firelands Federal Credit Union in Bellevue. Mr. Wasserman has three grown children Richard ‘05, Jacob ‘06, and Megan.

Found at 250 Feet! Maryanne Pickett ‘02

Daughter of Linda (Stout ‘71) and Mark Pickett ‘68 By: Lindsay Weickert ‘11 Daughter of Amy Weickert and Mike Weickert ‘83 Fear is something that holds many of us back, but for Maryanne Pickett fear meant nothing while training to be on the Hotshot Crew and Fire Use Module. Pickett rappels from helicopters to fight fires. Pickett describes her adventurous career. Q: What training did you have to reach your career goals? A: AmeriCorps and the National Park Service provided my initial coursework, field training and certification. Over three years with the United States Forest Service (USFS) on an Interagency Hotshot Crew, I was provided additional coursework, specialized skill training and leadership experience. In preparation for rappelling, I spent six months doing physical training to meet the USFS minimum criteria for employment and rappelling. I had to pass the USFS pack test carrying a 45 pound pack over three miles in less than 45 minutes. I also had to finish a 1.5 mile run in 11 minutes or less, 45 sit-ups in one minute, 25 push-ups in one minute, and seven pull-ups. In order to begin Rookie training, I had to complete a 110-pound pack test (complete three miles within 90 minutes). Then, I began four weeks of Rookie training with USFS’ Central Oregon Helitack/Rappel Crew that involved aviation specialized courses and field training. Every USFS Rappeller in Oregon and Washington is required to attend the week long Pacific Northwest Rappel Academy. As a Rookie, I began in the classroom and progressed through groundwork, low tower (15’), and high tower (40’) drills. The week ended with proficiency rappels (250’) in typical, timbered terrain. Q: How many females are in your line of work? A: Females are definitely a minority in the crews I have worked on. A Hotshot crew consisting of 20 people usually includes three females. A rappel Crew of 20 people usually includes seven females. Q: If you are not afraid of heights or fire, what are you afraid of? A: Crocodiles! Q: Why did you choose a fire-fighting career? A: While volunteering with AmeriCorps at Bandelier National Monument, I was offered a position with the Fire Use Module. I accepted the offer because I was drawn to the physical and mental challenge inherent in the job. I also was eager to discern my life purpose, learn a new skill set and further develop my leadership abilities. Q: What is your most memorable moment? A: The highlight of my fire-fighting career was my first live, fire rappel in the Three Sisters Wilderness area in Oregon. I was in charge of the fire and the five other rappellers assigned to the incident. With the limited resources at hand, it took three days to put the fire out. Our eight-mile hike out meandered through pristine, cascade lakes; its beauty was only slightly dimmed by the 115 pounds of gear every person carried. Q: What was your scariest moment? A: My scariest moment was when I stepped out onto the helicopter skid during my first 250-foot rappel. I had not looked outside or down until the moment I stepped out of the helicopter. As I pivoted into place, I became blatantly aware of how fantastic and precarious my job was. Fear was quickly dispelled as I repeated the procedural mantra ingrained from my training. I reminded myself to lean back and trust my equipment. I looked down, gave the rope a quick flick, and watched to make sure the rope was clear of knots. Straightening, I was conscious of the strong rotor wash whipping my sleeves around my arms. At the signal to descend, I focused on the rope in front of me. My peripheral view of the rotors changed to the skid and finally to the belly of the helicopter. As I went inverted, I saw my feet slip off the skid. Gravity brought me upright, and I slid down the rope.

Q: Where have you traveled doing your job? A: I traveled to Alaska, Idaho, Washington, Montana, California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado and Utah while assigned to ﬁres.

Cross Country Training throughout the summer paid off for the Cross Country boys’and girls’ teams. The boys’ team had a strong season. The experienced runners ran well while the new runners improved as the season progressed building an all-around good team. The girls’ team had a fantastic season, landing them at the Regional meet as a team. Freshman, Sarah Franks, was a great addition to the team and helped the experienced runners push themselves the entire season.

Soccer The Soccer team learned many valuable lessons this season. The schedule began with successful pre-season tournament play. The team however met challenges throughout the Fall, and ended the season 1-13-2. Despite the challenges, the teammates gained valuable experience and look forward to a strong season next year.

Football

First year Coach, Scott Knisely ’00, celebrated a tremendous season with 19 returning seniors from a team that made it to the playoffs last year. The team started the season strong with a commanding 62-6 victory over Cardinal Stritch. They continued to dominate their opponents throughout the season before facing Mohawk in week 9, losing 14-25. The team bounced back and qualified for the State playoff. Although the boys lost to McComb, finishing the season 9-2 was quite an accomplishment.

Golf SJCC’s strong tradition of a golf team held up this year once again. Sophomore, Connor Dudley, returned to the State Tournament and placed 6th. The entire team played extremely well throughout the season, winning the MAL Tournament title. Nest year’s season looks extremely promising as our young team loses only 1 senior, Alex Chudzinski.

Volleyball Endless work during the summer prepared the volleyball team for their fall season. Strong leadership by lone senior Alison Streacker helped the team start their season very strong, playing well against good teams. Highlighting the season was defeating Hopewell-Loudon, one of the best teams in the state, in just three games! The girls had a strong finish to the season, before losing in the Sectional tournament to end their season. Senior - David Wasson

Tennis

Despite losing two players to graduation, the girls tennis team welcomed several new players and the experienced players grew in their aptitude of the game. After practicing throughout the summer, the season started with the girls feeling conﬁdent in their ability to play the game and beat players from other teams. As they slowly ironed out their lineup they kept performing well and holding their own. The girls ﬁnished the season 8-7 and were happy with their effort throughout the year and proud of their accomplishments.

Boys Basketball As Coach Jonathan Will entered his second year as head coach, the Streaks have continued to improve. With a highlight victory over Gibsonburg and some tough, close losses, the boys ﬁnished the season 10-11. The strong senior leadership of Brant Reardon, Simon Nagy, Jeremy Durbin, Alex Chudzinski, and Nate Long will be sorely Junior - Stephanie Alonzo missed, but strong underclassmen leave much promise for next year.

Girls Basketball Our young Lady Streaks will be returning next year with a team stacked with experience, losing lone senior Jena Hoffman. Having lead the league in three-point shots, they ﬁnished the season 7-15. This record does not reﬂect the intensity on the court, losing several games by only a couple of points. Highlights of the season include and upset wins over leaguefoe Lakota and a seasoned Danbury team.

Swimming With a record number of swimmers, the Streaks made a splash this season! The strong performances of senior Rob Reineck and junior Emily Ronski set the bar high, and many swimmers answered the call. With seven district qualiﬁers and several broken records, Streaks have had one of their most successful years yet.

Bowling The Streaks were strong competitors with a senior-loaded team. Senior Nick Wickline was the boys “high-roller” and sophomore Katie Harmon led the girls. There may not have been many marks in the win column, but they had a lot of fun throughout the season.

Wrestling Senior,Austin Hilty, capped his wrestling career by placing 7th at the State Tournament, after ﬁnishing 3rd at the district meet and 1st at sectionals. Three wrestlers placed in the top 3 at the MAL meet. The team had many setbacks due to injuries, but gained invaluable experience to prepare them for next year.

Chance Meeting on the High Seas

The long arms of SJCC reached to The Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, when John Ehrman ‘66 and his wife, Joy and Phil “Bud” Kline ‘64 and his wife Emma sat down for breakfast aboard the Carnival Ecstasy cruise ship. As conversation moved to “where do you live?” and/or “where are you from?” they discovered they were not only both from Fremont, Ohio, but that they both attended St Joe, graduating just two years apart. The Klines where cruising with their friends from Houston. The Ehrmans have lived in the Houston area for 21 years and were celebrating their 40th Wedding Anniversary.

Streak of Genius-Eric Smola

Eric Smola graduated from SJCC in 1990. From there he went on to study at The University of Toledo. He is now principal of St. Francis de Sales High School in Toledo, Ohio; he teaches history there as well. He has been interested in history ever since he had Mr. Bill Smith in history as a student at SJCC. He was engaged and interested by the way history was brought to life in the classroom. The valuable lessons helped gear Mr. Smola’s life toward education. Mr. Smola gives Catholic Education top priority. He said of his years at SJCC, “I didn’t really realize how beneficial it was until college. Most of my friends hadn’t attended Catholic schools, and right away I could tell there was a difference in self-expectation.” He also noted the important development of character that is unsurpassed by other educational systems. One lesson that he learned is still being implemented today through his work at St. Francis. That virtue is understanding. Smola states, “I remember a lot of the fun and messing around that went on in high school. I also remember making mistakes during those times. As principal of St. Francis, I always try to stay cool while dealing with my students, keeping those times in mind.” Today, Smola continues a life of service started at SJCC through his work at St. Francis. While there, he

worked to expand their service program from including only upperclassmen to every grade level, so as to include all 600 students who attend St. Francis. He is also on the board of directors responsible for setting up a preparatory public charter school in Toledo. Mr. Smola lives his vocational call through his family life. He has a wife, Michele and two daughters: Kate (5), and Ella (3). He was selected as our “Streak of Genius,” for his many accomplishments and his continued dedication to service.

Ton of Tabs!

A ton is a heavy weight to lift. I can’t lift a ton, but with persistence and commitment, I can sure deliver it. Saving and donating aluminum can tabs has been my Make a Difference Day project for the last ten years. At age six, I saw my grandma Marie (Widman ‘44) Amor, saving tabs for Ronald McDonald House in Toledo. She explained the importance of giving back and supporting our community. Grandma chose Ronald McDonald House because they provide free food and lodging to families with a child in a nearby hospital. My mom told me about Make a Difference Day. Volunteers provide a service or aid to someone in need. I decided to save tabs for my Make a Difference Day project. Family and friends began donating tabs to me. First, I filled a shoebox, then a fruit box, and finally a large box. I saved all year and on Make a Difference Day 2000 we delivered 85 pounds of tabs to Ronald McDonald House in Toledo. In ten years, I have networked family, friends, businesses, and organizations to deliver 2,271 pounds (over a ton) of tabs. If you haven’t already, won’t you please join my network? My project is ongoing. I want to break my 2007 record of 431 pounds. I look forward to the challenge. Thanks to everyone who has assisted me with my efforts. Like Ronald McDonald says, “If we all lift a finger, we can pull this off!”
