“I remember Bill Smith because...

He believed with every fiber of his being that he could make us love history as much as he did, and he was right! ~ He was one of the most interesting teachers I’ve ever had. I loved his classes!”~ He would come to class “in costume” and had very interesting “props” in his classroom! ~ I will never look at dirt or history the same because of him; he made learning FUN! ~ He taught three generations in my family. ~ He made American History class interesting and even enjoyable! ~ He made the students “re-live” the past! ~ His class was always an adventure! ~ He is a man of great fidelity, perseverance, and humility. ~ He is a man of deep faith and great intelligence, but always self-effacing. I am grateful for his presence in my life! ~ Fun memories of archeology class! ~ He once brought a Civil War musket into the school, causing a concerned passer-by to call the police advising a man with a gun was entering SJCC! ~ He taught through handson learning. What a feat! ~ He inspired me to think deeper and understand more! ~ He made history tangible through his use of wardrobe, artifacts, and interesting side notes - a veritable wellspring of knowledge! ~ Of the archeology dig we did in his class in 1975! ~ His passion for history was infectious and his ability to communicate made him the great educator he is today! ~ He was a storyteller in history class! ~ He gave me the lifelong gift of loving to learn! ~ He made history come alive! ~ He was my most passionate teacher. As students we learn the most from those who teach and love what they teach! ~ He was one of my favorite teachers! ~ Of the 3pc brown corduroy suit was always covered with chalk dust in ancient history class 1966! ~ He taught history as if he had been there himself! ~ We had great fun helping him build a cabin in the woods out of re-purposed wood from an old barn. ~ He was a cool young fun teacher with crazy hair! ~ I loved getting out of school and going to dig for artifacts at Whitakers in Archeology class! ~ He told the most interesting stories and kept my attention during the entire class! ~ He set off a small charge in a musket pointing it at Sister Victor’s adjacent room! ~ I still remember some of those stories after all of these years! ~ He was an excellent History teacher not only for my class but for my daughters and my grandson; he was their favorite teacher! ~ He had the unique ability to help you learn and have fun at the same time! ~ I’ve never enjoyed learning and experiencing history as much as I did under the leadership and guidance of Mr. Smith! ~ He made me want to dig up dead bodies....in Egypt! ~ I could have personally thanked him for inspiring me! ~ The future students are really going to miss out having Mr. Smith as a teacher...”

Thank You, Mr. Smith

The work of an educator never really ends. Certainly, things are different when the first day of school with students begins or the last day of the school year is completed. The work, however, continues through proactive planning, workshops, conferences, graduate classes, tutoring, and other activities mixed in with some summer vacation time. A teacher always looks for and is drawn toward opportunities to teach. We celebrate all of our “teachers” in whatever role they have chosen to serve – the classroom teachers, support staff, volunteers, coaches, and of course, our parents. Thank You We especially give thanks to those who have fought the good fight and have run the race for so many years. They have taken an occupation and made it a vocation – a faith-filled and dedicated journey to impact children and prepare them for a lifetime of learning and service. We give thanks to Liz Hickey and Bill Smith for all they have done and wish them all the best life has to offer! On behalf of all the staff and students of BHCS and our three school campuses of Sacred Heart, Saint Joseph and SJCC, we give thanks and praise for all who have prayed, donated and given time to support our Catholic schools. God bless each and every one of you. Have a blessed summer and keep in touch.

Graduation 2014 The class of 2014 made their final appearance together on Sunday, May 25 during their baccalaureate Mass and graduation ceremony. On a beautiful spring day, the seniors, along with their family and friends, began the ceremony with a heartwarming Mass at St. Joseph church. Mass was followed with an awards ceremony in the gymnasium. Mr. Cullen began the afternoon with several inspiration messages to the graduates. He urged them to follow their “GPS,” God, prayer, and service throughout their future endeavors. Valedictorian Nina Grillis and salutatorian Haelie Egbert both addressed the audience with fun-filled and engaging speeches. Both girls thanked their families, friends, and the faculty and staff at SJCC for all of their help throughout their high school journeys. The ceremony was concluding with the presentation of the Bishop’s Cross, considered the highest award presented. Grant Mercer and Kelsey Nevius received this prestigious honor.

The Reign at an End

By: Katie Magnuson ‘16

As the school year draws to a close, St. Joseph Central Catholic is preparing to say goodbye to a teacher who has been here for over half of a century. Mr. Bill Smith was hired in 1963 by then-principal Fr. Earl Loeffler, who encouraged him to teach English I along with his preferred subject of American History. Now, fiftyone years after he first set foot in these halls, Mr. Smith is Mr. Smith shares a moment in his classroom ready to leave the building for the last time. with Marge Hirt, class of 1965, her son Chris In honor of Mr. Smith’s retirement, the Hirt famHirt, class of 1990, and Chris’ daughter Maggie, ily- Marge (‘65), Chris (‘90), and Maggie (Class of 2016)class of 2016! agreed to share their experiences and memories of Mr. Smith’s History class. As with anyone, Mr. Smith has changed significantly over the years. When he began, he was rather shy and professional, bringing a briefcase to work and often wearing dress clothes. Referring to Mr. Smith’s early years, Marge remarked, “ He was almost like one of us kids because he was only a few years older than us.” At this point, Mr. Smith was only beginning his collection of historical artifacts, and he encouraged his students to bring in anything interesting they happened to find. Beginning with an empty room, this collection gradually expanded to fill the entirety of the walls in room 205. By the late 1980’s, Mr. Smith’s demeanor had changed, and he had grown comfortable enough to be a bit more informal in his teaching style. Chris recalls, “ Sleeping was not an option. If you fell asleep in that class, it was basically open season for harassment.” Chris also remembers Mr. Smith’s ability to “shift back and forth” between joking and being serious almost instantaneously. However, his unique personality is what Chris cites as “drawing the students into the subject matter.” As far as the artifacts stationed around the room, Chris remembers a particular military helmet from World War II with a bullet hole through it. This, he said, was enough to make the students understand the reality and ruthlessness of war. Today, it is fair to say that Mr. Smith is much more relaxed in his profession than when he began teaching. He can often be heard telling stories and joking with his students; in Maggie’s words, he is “living it up” during his last few days at St. Joseph. The walls in his classroom have long been covered in historical artifacts, but as our school year ends, Mr. Smith has decided to allow students to take home whatever they please, making a return to the empty shelves with which he started. All things considered, Mr. Smith has made a lasting impression on all of his students --both past and present. As Maggie describes: “the students who entered his class with no interest in history left caring about it.” In Chris’ memory, the class was “sarcastic with a dose of reality,” and it helped to instill a sense of “reverence toward history” in every student. No matter how one remembers it, Mr. Smith’s career certainly has its place in the history of St. Joseph Central Catholic. Perhaps Marge describes it best: “Anybody that walked into his class got caught up in what he was talking about. It was almost like the students went into a zone around him. They didn’t look at the clock.” SJCC is honored to have been a part of Mr. Smith’s extensive teaching career and wishes him the best in all future endeavors. Have a happy retirement, Mr. Smith. We will miss you.
