Letter President FROM

THE

Dear Friends,

As I reflect on the past year, I am most grateful that the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, together with our RDC Associates and Companions, remain collaborative, responsive, and mission-focused. With your generosity and support, we not only continue to serve the community with social and spiritual welfare, faith formation, human development and education, our Sisters remain in mission where they live, work and volunteer. Last year at this time, we addressed the importance of extending our mission of compassion as far as our energy and imagination could take us in an increasingly insular world. Who could have imagined that one year later, COVID-19 would dramatically change our world from becoming more insular to more interdependent?

Although the virus was the horrendous catalyst, the response was born of humans! The remarkable compassion of people all over the world deepens our faith. We are never alone when God’s compassion is manifested in our families, neighborhoods, communities and world. Compassion abounds, and we believe Divine Compassion continues to call us forward together!

As the frontliners make extraordinary sacrifices to save lives and those staying home support the essential workers, the Divine Compassion Community is called to continue to be God’s compassionate presence locally and around the world.

It is with this in mind, and with great humility and thanks, that we recognize all of you, our faithful supporters and partners in mission. No one has been spared of the impact of COVID-19. It is our prayer that with God’s unfailing Providence, “All shall be well.”

We remain, as ever, deeply grateful for your generous support and investment in the well-being, empowerment, justice, non-violence and respect for diversity in all people. We continue to pray for you and your family, and invite you to join us in prayer.

May the Divine Compassion be on our lips and in our hearts, that in all we say and do, we may please God. Amen.

Blessings and sincere thanks to you! Sister Laura Donovan, RDC President

“The Divines”of Wartburg It is often said that upon meeting a Sister of the Divine Compassion (RDC), she quickly becomes your friend, and often a part of your family. Many agree that what sets the Sisters apart is their affability and approachability. This certainly seems to be the case with the Sisters now living at Wartburg in Mt. Vernon, NY, which offers independent and assisted living, as well as skilled nursing care. In the past year and a half, nine Sisters moved to Wartburg. When asked about living there, the Sisters agree that although there is always a period of adjustment, they each feel “at home,” and are enjoying living in community with the RDC Sisters, as well as other seniors and religious community members. Most recently nicknamed, “The Divines,” the RDCs have quickly become the group that brings a lighter spirit to Wartburg, spreading joy and compassion among the residents. The Sisters explain, “We live the charism taught to us by the Divine Compassion Sisters. They loved us, and we love others.” Sisters Alice Conrad and Rita Dougherty were the first to move to Wartburg. Both Sisters lived busy lives in their ministries before Wartburg, and they continue to do so today.

Sr. Rita, who worked in various administrative roles at Good Counsel College/College of White Plains, Iona College in New Rochelle, and the Franciscan School of Theology at Berkeley, currently volunteers in the Accounting Department at Burke Rehabilitation and is a member of the RDC Pastoral Committee. Sr. Alice, who began Shepherd’s Flock to provide those in need, especially the working poor, with basic necessities, is as busy as ever.

Sister now runs the program from her cottage at Wartburg and her “nun mobile.” In recognition of the impact of her efforts, Sr. Alice was recently acknowledged by New York State for her work on behalf of the underserved, as well as at Westchester County’s Senior Hall of Fame Luncheon, where she received top honors for her life-long ministry on behalf of Westchester County residents and employees.

othy rad,

"My ministry for the majority of my life was education. I began teaching in 1949, and loved it! As a French teacher, I worked to bring happiness and pep into my classroom. I do the same here. My ministry now is helping my neighbors and making Wartburg residents smile. Just this week, one of my neighbors was going through a difficult transition, so she knocked on my door, and asked to talk with me. I was happy to listen to her concerns and help her feel better.”

After serving in a number of diverse ministries including education, social justice, pastoral ministry, radio host and most recently as the Promotion Coordinator for Little Rock Scripture Study for 15 years, Sr. Susan McCarthy is now a member of the RDC Pastoral Committee, and a Board Member with the SHORE Foundation and MaryDell Faith and Life Center. She continues to enjoy meeting and reconnecting with personal and professional contacts.

Weber, Susan Merritt, Lucille Bridgetts Mary Alice O’Brien, Susan McCarthy

“Our transition to Wartburg was not difficult compared to other moves we have made,” Sr. Rita explained. “We have connected with people from our past lives, both personally and professionally. It is also nice that we visit with each other, have dinner together and rely on each other. We truly live in community here.” The eldest among the group, Sr. Lucille Bridgetts, just celebrated her 97th birthday!

“Living in community is about making connections,” Sr. Susan explains. “If you look around, you will see that most people want to connect.” Upon moving to Wartburg, Sr. Susan attended daily Mass, volunteered for Communion services, and made an effort to have dinner with different groups of people. Before long, she was connecting with the Dominican and Franciscan Sisters, as well as others she taught or worked with over the years, organizing dinners together, fun activities, trips, and more.

When Sisters Mary Alice O’Brien and Susan Merritt moved to Wartburg from their home in Pleasantville where they lived independently for 16 years, they were delighted to discover how friendly the residents are, and were grateful to receive a warm welcome.

Sister Jane Keegan, RDC

Having entered the Divine Compassion Community in 1967, Sr. Mary Alice began a 47-year ministry at Good Counsel Academy High School, serving as an English teacher, media specialist, Assistant Principal and librarian. Sister was instrumental in engaging GCA students in community service initiatives.

“Although we are a small group here at Wartburg, the feeling of being family is the same,” Sr. Mary Alice added. Sr. Dorothy Weber, a devoted teacher and avid Dodgers baseball fan, is a member of the RDC Pastoral Team. Sister explained that life at Wartburg is made more comfortable because many of the residents come from similar lives and backgrounds.

Sr. Susan Merritt’s ministry in education extended more than 40 years. She was the founding Dean of the Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems at Pace University – a post she held for 25 years. She has been recognized with numerous accolades and awards by corporations and schools for her innovation and leadership in information technology. Sr. Susan also served as President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion from 2008 to 2012.

“One of our RDC Companion's parents are moving here soon. We are looking forward to welcoming them,” Sr. Dorothy added. “What has been a blessing for me is that I did not live or work with most of the Sisters that are with me at Wartburg now. It has been wonderful to have the opportunity to know them better,” Sister added.

“I grew up in a wonderful family. Although we were not particularly religious, I was drawn to the Sisters of the Divine Compassion. They taught us and loved us,” Sr. Susan explained.

“It takes time to get used to a more scheduled routine, but the people are delightful,” Sr. Dorothy shared. 4

Sr. Jane Keegan and Sr. Mary Christine McGee moved to Wartburg most recently. Sr. Christine, who taught in various elementary schools throughout New York and New Jersey, became a special education teacher and provided tutoring for IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), while working at St. Genevieve School in Elizabeth, NJ. Sister is also a licensed nurses aide.

the Mission Education Coordinator for Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, a Religion Editor at William H. Sadlier publishing company, and Associate Director of Advancement for the RDC Community. Currently, Sr. Jane is a member of the RDC Social Justice Board, founded and remains a member of the Divine Compassion Golf Classic Committee, and co-founded the newly developed Founders’ Day of Giving online campaign. In addition to her active life in mission, Sr. Jane looks forward to becoming even more involved with the various groups and activities at Wartburg.

For Sr. Jane, the move was one that she was hoping for since her earliest visits to the facility.

"I immediately felt a connection to Wartburg. Having visited Sr. Mary Beth Maney often, I knew it was a welcoming place. During one of the tours I attended, it became more evident that Wartburg's mission and caring enviornment was in sync with our Community's mission and values," Sr. Jane said.

“I see each day as a gift, thankfully, and a chance to respond in whatever way I can. I’m very grateful to be living in such a caring environment, and I am eager to contribute to it,” Sr. Jane shared. The Sisters continue to lead active lives, reaching out, making connections and serving others with compassion. This is their charism. It is what keeps “The Divines” in mission where they live!”

After decades of teaching and heading up the drama and religious studies departments at Good Counsel Academy and JFK High Schools, Sr. Jane was

Sr. Lucille Bridgetts and Sr. Christine McGee at Sr. Lucille’s 97th birthday celebration. 5

Interdependent Compassion at W Preston Center of Compassion (PCC) opened at Preston High School in 1992 in response to the need for quality, affordable psychotherapy services and counseling for Bronx women, children, and families. Since that time, PCC has continually responded to the needs of Bronx families, and today the Center offers a myriad of services including: • PCC Summer Recreational Program • Big Sister Little Sister Program • Senior Run Project • Afterschool Tutoring Program • Afterschool Recreation Program • English as a Second Language Program

Incorporated since 2003, the Preston Center of Compassion continues to expand its programs and services. Grounded in a spirit of compassion and empowerment, the Center addresses critical community needs; and provides support to low income women, children and families who are most in need.

Sister Patricia Warner, Erick, Preston HS alumna and PCC

“At PCC, the mission of compassion is burning in our hearts. Located just seven miles from the poorest Congressional district in the United States, the PCC strives to be a compassionate presence and resource to individuals and families in the Bronx. This is at the very core of our founding, and is what we do and who we serve each and every day,” PCC Executive Director, Sr. Patricia (Patty) Warner explained.

It is with this in mind that Niurvis Torres reached out to PCC. After losing her son in a swimming accident, Niurvis battled with depression. She was unemployed and struggling to provide for her family. If that were not challenging enough, Niurvis was diagnosed with a brain tumor. A single mother of three, she grappled to take care of herself and her children. 6

ck, CC

“Erick and Edwin were struggling academically, so we quickly provided tutoring services to both of them,” Sr. Patty explained. That summer, with financial help from a friend and a scholarship from PCC, Niurvis was able to enroll Edwin and Erick in PCC’s Summer Camp. The support PCC has provided to the Torres family was instrumental to their getting back on their feet, and changing their lives for the better. Two respectful and mannerly boys, Edwin and Erick greatly appreciate the concern and care they receive at PCC. “We love Preston Center of Compassion, and we are happy because our mom feels better,” Edwin and Erick expressed.

The Torres family continues to receive services, thanks to a generous donation from Laurie and George Baird.

“As parents, we understand you are in it for the long haul. We are so glad we can help support the Torres boys and their mom, Niurvis,” Laurie Baird explained. “We are so happy they keep coming back. We want them to continue at PCC as long as they need it,” Laurie added.

Niurvis and Edwin Torres, and volunteer, Katie Laserinko Buhler ’98

“Throughout my battle, I was always concerned about my children. More than anything, I wanted Erick and Edwin to be happy and have fun.” Niurvis learned about the Preston Center of Compassion at her sons’ school just over four years ago. Desperate to turn their lives around, Niurvis reached out to Sr. Patty Warner. Sister immediately began to work with Niurvis, and her boys started to receive services.

7

The help does not stop there. Sr. Patty asked Preston High School alumna, Katie Laserinko Buhler ’98, a special education teacher at St. Theresa and Santa Maria schools, tutor and summer camp counselor, to join the team of support for the boys. Katie drives Edwin and Erick home from PCC, so their mom can work until her shift ends.

“I enjoy driving Erick and Edwin home. Why should they walk, when I can easily drive them?” Katie shared. In fact, during summer camp, Katie not only drives the boys home, she picks them up in the morning as well.

“We have fun together. I am happy to help the Torres family, and I would do anything to help Sr. Patty. She has been a great friend to me since my time at Preston High School.” Erick and Edwin agree that their trips to PCC with Katie are so much fun. “Ms. Katie teaches us songs and sings along to all the music. She is awesome!”

For Niurvis, Erick and Edwin, the people of PCC are an extraordinary blessing. “From the first time we came to PCC and met Sr. Patty, everyone has been so helpful and understanding. It is a gift for me to go to work every day, knowing that my boys are doing well at PCC. I feel so much better now, thanks to PCC, and Erick and Edwin are happy, safe, and doing well in school!” Compassion requires interdependence. It is evident that interdependence is in action at the Preston Center of Compassion and is a blessing to many. “From our earliest history, the Sisters of the Divine Compassion have walked with those suffering. Our mission remains the same, and so does our ministry at Preston Center of Compassion. It is what brings us together and closer into the hearts of the people we serve,” Sr. Patty said.

"We love Preston Center of Compassion, and we are happy because our mom feels better.”

In Dedication to Reservation & P For Sr. Joan O’Sullivan, life at “80-something” is different, but not less meaningful. As Sr. Joan explains, “Presence is a gift,” and continues with a quote from Abraham Heschel, “Just to be is a blessing. Just to live is holy.”

It is quite an interesting perspective from a Sister of the Divine Compassion who has dedicated her life to “using her tools to build,” a lesson instilled in Sr. Joan and her sister, Geraldine, at an early age. Influenced by the Sisters’ spirit, and attracted to the RDC Community mission, Sr. Joan’s compassion for people and things that needed renewal or preservation, had a great influence on her life.

After making her vows, she was assigned as Sr. Victoire to Mahopac, NY, where along with Sisters Regina, Jean Marie, Judith and Stephen, she helped to open St. John the Evangelist School in 1955. After St. John’s, she moved to St. Joseph’s in Croton, Holy Name in Valhalla, and St. Mary’s School in Katonah. It was during her time as principal of St. Mary’s that Sr. Joan became aware of the special needs of students who were academically or behaviorally challenged. There weren't any services to meet their needs. To address this, Sr. Joan partnered with the District Superintendent of the Katonah-Lewisboro School District to develop and provide a Remedial Reading Program under Title IV. At the end of Sr. Joan’s term as principal, Fr. Daniel Peake, then Superintendent of the Northern Westchester Catholic Schools, encouraged her to apply as a representative of Catholic school education to a new federally funded grant called Project Mainstream. Upon her acceptance, Sister joined a team of six consultants to research, develop and implement

strategies for administrators and teachers to include children with special needs in an inclusive school environment, thus disbanding self-contained classes. There were very personal and exciting advantages to participating in the grant, such as earning a master’s degree in Learning Disabilities and an Administrative certification from New York University. The threeyear funded project concluded with the passing of Public Law 94-142.

When it was passed in 1975, P.L. 94-142 guaranteed a free appropriate public education to each child with a handicapping condition or disability. This law had a dramatic, positive impact on millions of children with disabilities in every state and each local community across the country.

& Preservation

After this remarkable accomplishment, Sr. Joan went on to achieve a doctorate in psychology as she worked with the “behaviorally disabled” at Greenwich High School and their Learning Disabilities Program for 20 years! She considers her years there as “invaluable” to her outreach in public education and experience working with a variety of students with special needs.

During that time, Sr. Joan joined with Sisters Pat Sheridan and Lauren McLeod at the RDC Counseling Center, where she worked from 1992-2012. In her late seventies, Sister decided it was time to “switch tools,” and “move from her head to her hands.”

Sr. Joan, who always considered herself an environmentalist, set out to restore her dear friend Dan’s four-acre property, which he had literally turned into a junk yard. In October of 2012, she followed the directive; “We are stewards of the planet: color the earth with care,” and established the Earth Restoration Project. The property included two barns, a house, sheds, 125 tires, broken down cars and trucks, tools, copper and more debris than one could possibly imagine. The more she dug-in, the more she uncovered, including a beautiful deep well gushing out two gallons of pure water per minute! Slowly and surely, the earth responded.

“Just as those who stopped to help all along the way, the person who now owns the property, happened to drive by one day. We soon became birds of a feather, and with a handshake and a promise, my work was done and his began,” Sr. Joan reminisces. He is continuing the work, and will ultimately restore and live in the barn, which dates back to 1848.

Sr. Joan is quick to point out that she did not undertake the task alone. She and her sister, Gerry, met many people along the way who graciously and generously lent their expertise to help restore the farmland to its natural beauty. Over a seven year span of time, Sr. Joan and those she met along the way, personally, painstakingly and significantly contributed to the restoration and preservation of the beautiful gardens and woodlands. “It was fun from the get-go,” Sr. Joan explains. In April of 2019, with just a few pictures and a description of the property posted on a rock (yes, a rock!), Sr. Joan sold the property to a person who shares her love of the environment.

In celebration of her friend Dan’s life, Sr. Joan and her sister, Gerry, gathered with friends, neighbors and all of the people involved in the Earth Restoration Project to remember and thank Dan, the man who brought them all together, because after all their “presence was a gift, and just being there with them was a blessing.” 11

21st Annual Divine Co m More than 170 golfers and dinner guests joined together at the 21st Annual Divine Compassion Golf Classic last October to celebrate and thank Marie McMahon for her long-time friendship and generosity to the Sisters of the Divine Compassion and so many others in and around the White Plains community.

Sisters Laura Donovan and Carol Peterson, RDC with Marie McMahon

Although a gray sky prevailed during the morning of the event, the sun broke through the clouds just in time for tee-off, as RDC President, Sr. Laura Donovan, welcomed the golfers to Fenway.

“Each year, we are so very grateful to our supporters who come out to golf and join us for dinner,” Sr. Laura said. “We are blessed to now have two generations of golfers participate in the event, and the dinner reception is getting bigger and bigger. It was wonderful to have everyone come together to support our mission of compassion and help us celebrate Marie!”

Prior to the event, Marie, who is President of McMahon, Lyon & Hartnett Funeral Home, was not completely comfortable with being in the spotlight; however, after a delightful evening of spending time with the Sisters, family and friends, Marie emphasized, “If I knew in advance, how much fun the dinner celebration would be, I would have agreed to do this a long time ago!” Sisters attending the event were delighted with the turnout, stating that the compassionate spirit was evident throughout the day and evening. “Marie has always been a generous and dedicated supporter of our Congregation, forming strong and enduring bonds with many of our Sisters over the years.” For Marie, doing what she can to support the RDCs was an honor. “I am blessed to know the RDCs since first grade at St. Bernard’s Elementary School,” Marie said. “I will never forget how Sr. Mary St. John took me

o mpassion Golf Classic! under her wing and encouraged me during my time there. I have been lucky to have been educated by the Sisters, and to have formed close friendships with them over the years. In addition, so many members of my family have been educated by the RDCs, including my two sisters, two uncles, nine cousins, two aunts, and four nieces!” Following a spectacular day of golfing, enticing raffle prizes and a delicious dinner, Skip Morton took command of the Live Auction. With his wonderful sense of humor and expertise, Skip engaged guests in bidding for auction favorites such as golfing with Fr. Tom Collins, and the annual Rangers and Mets game experiences. New packages this year included a golfing trip to Ireland, personal shopping at the new Nordstrom’s in NYC and a Christmas Spectacular, including home décor and a cocktail party. Thanks to the tremendous generosity of our sponsors, Marie, golfers and dinner guests, we had another record breaking year, raising over $100,000 in net proceeds!

“I am proud to be associated with the RDC Community and blessed to call the Sisters my friends. They are a unique community of Sisters. What sets them apart is their genuine compassion for others. They are warm, kind and patient women who have given so much to so many, and impacted multiple generations of families. Through life’s milestones, challenges and joyous occasions, the Sisters “stick with you for life!” Marie McMahon said. Special thanks to our dear friend and Fenway Golf Club sponsor, Gwen Fisher and the dedicated Golf Classic Committee including Sisters Jane Keegan, Anne Kniphuisen, Ruth Murphy and Felicitas Russell, as well as Jeannie Gaston, Barbara Paonessa, Betsy Post, Jim Donworth, Edward Romer, Tom Stern and Ken Tallevi, whose tireless efforts and dedication to the success of this event is unwavering and awe-inspiring!

"One of life’s many pleasures is reflecting on how much the Sisters of the Divine Compassion (RDCs) meant to me throughout my childhood and how strong their influence continues today, well over fifty years later. The Sisters still remain my true moral compass today in my personal, family and professional life. I owe everything to those formative years, and the love and dedication we all received from the RDCs." Thomas E. Merkel, St. Mary’s School Alumnus 16

Living their Dream Ministry For more than 175 years combined, Sisters M. Stephen Healey, Marie Cecile Larizza and Mary Alice Reamer have educated generations of children at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint John the Baptist Schools. Together, the Sisters have served as principals of the schools – living their "dream ministry" for over 120 years! Sister Mary Alice Reamer, who began her ministry at St. John the Baptist as an eighth grade teacher in 1983, has been principal of the school since 1984. There is no job too big or small for Sr. Mary Alice, who still works lunch duty from 11:30 to 12:45 each and every day! “The Principal before me did lunch duty, so I just continued to do it,” Sr. Mary Alice explains. Sr. Mary Alice is beloved by generations of St. John’s families, those who attended the school in the 1980s and 1990s, and now their children. In fact, there are thirty-two children currently attending St. John’s whose parents are alumni. “St. John the Baptist continues to be a joyful school,” Sister said.

Sister M. Cecile Larizza, RDC

“The true testament to the effect St. John the Baptist has on children is when the “kids” come back to visit, send cards or a note to say thank you for all we did for them,” Sr. Mary Alice shared. Sister is thankful to have a school filled with respectful children, and credits the connections the children have with their immediate and extended families, especially grandparents, for that.

When asked about enrollment, Sr. Mary Alice acknowledges that Catholic schools have to be more strategic about maintaining enrollment these days. She credits her loyal and engaged teachers, an amazing Board and administrative staff, the support of wonderful families, and a great relationship with the parish for her strong enrollment numbers.

Sister M. Stephen Healey, who recently celebrated her 50th anniversary as Principal of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in Elmsford agrees. In fact, when she thinks about her ministry at Mt. Carmel, she tears up reflecting about the blessed life she has had at the school.

“I am so grateful for my ministry in education. I love teaching. It is my real love, in addition to dancing! I have been blessed to have taught and been principal for three generations of children. What ministry other than education would allow me to influence more lives?” Sr. Stephen shared. Sr. Stephen’s connection to the Sisters of the Divine Compassion precedes her time as a nun. After her mother passed away when she was in fifth grade, her father was left alone to raise Sr. Stephen and her brother, John.

By seventh grade, it was decided that she would live and attend school at Good Counsel in White Plains. Although difficult to leave her father and brother, Sr. Stephen loved the RDCs, and lived on campus from seventh through eleventh grades. It was the best of both worlds, as she was permitted to take the train home on weekends to be with her family.

with OLS students

After three and a half decades at St. John the Baptist School, Sr. Mary Alice does not plan to retire any time soon. “As a Sister of the Divine Compassion, I am blessed to witness the compassion that is shared with others every day at this school. Why would I want to be anywhere else?”

Although Sr. Stephen began her teaching ministry at St. Frances de Chantal in the Bronx, she has been at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel for 54 years. She has seen many changes over five decades, but what has remained constant is that “a happy student is a successful student.” 23

“We have achieved so much together because we love and support one another and the children. It is not always easy for us or our students, but we never let each other down. We want the best for each other, our students, families and our school.” Sr. Stephen’s theory about happy students was validated last year when Our Lady of Mount Carmel school children achieved the highest results in Math and English in the entire Archdiocese!

“The Divine Compassion charism encourages us to be approachable. The children feel safe with us. They confide in us and they rely on us. I still believe in setting limits for children because I believe the limits make them happier in the long run. That does not mean we do not have fun. We absolutely do, but everything within reason,” Sr. Stephen states.

Sister Mary Alice Reamer, RDC

“I am convinced that when children know that you care about them, you care about what they do and what happens to them, they thrive,” Sr. Stephen explains.

Time after time, Sr. Stephen has seen the difference her faculty and staff make in the lives of their children and their families.

As one student explained, “I am happy here because there are limits for all of us, and my teacher enforces them. I love my teachers and I know they love me.”

“As soon as people enter our building, they can feel the compassion that is in our school. It is the charism of our relationships and it is the greatest blessing we have to give. The adults in the building really love and care for each other and the children. The children know it and so do the adults,” Sr. Stephen says.

In 2019, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel celebrated its 90th anniversary! A weekend of celebrations included three generations of families and visits from students, including a few that hadn’t been back in 40 years.

Sister feels privileged to work with her faculty and staff each and every day, and is thankful to all the Sisters that have lived and worked at OLM. In particular, Sister is grateful for the fifty years she lived and worked alongside her dear friends, Sr. Joanne Fallon and Sr. Margaret Keogan.

Sr. Stephen was involved in every detail of the planning, and a week after the celebrations, she slowed down just enough to fit in knee surgery.

Like Sr. Mary Alice, Sr. Stephen does not plan to retire just yet, and as she danced the conga with her students during Catholic School Week, it was easy to see why.

Sr. M. Cecile Larizza agrees. She feels blessed to be Principal at Our Lady of Sorrows School (OLS) in White Plains for 35 years.

Compassion is ever-present at OLS,” Sr. Ceil explained. We work together to graduate students that are good people with a strong work ethic, which is just as important as how smart they are,” she added.

An accomplished musician who plays several instruments, Sr. Ceil was originally the first grade and music teacher at the school, preparing students to sing at Mass, where she played the guitar. In 1985, she took the reign as Principal, and is happy to say that she has enjoyed wonderful experiences in the position.

Sr. Ceil also emphasizes how important it is that children at OLS feel safe. “With all that is going on in the world, with social media and technology, life can be difficult for children,” Sr. Ceil explains. “We provide a school where the children feel supported. “Our students are happy to be here, and happy students are successful students!”

“There aren’t any typical days in education. Every day comes with its surprises or challenges, but over the years it has been mostly good days and great times!”

Sr. Ceil and her long-time, dedicated faculty and staff work diligently to keep their school strong. “We have a very innovative curriculum at OLS, but we work hard to keep the basics very strong, especially grammar and writing," Sr. Ceil explains. With two of her eighth graders offered scholarships to Regis High School, seven earning full scholarships, and several students offered partial scholarships, it is evident she and her faculty are continuing in the tradition of providing students with an excellent Divine Compassion education. Sr. Ceil is quick to add, however, that in addition to the strong academic curriculum at OLS, developing each student’s character is a priority.

“Our students know they have a responsibility to give back to those less fortunate than they are. Our school community, including students, faculty, staff and families are generous and kind.

Sister M. Stephen Healey, RDC 25

Compassionate Community on C As long as there has been a Good Counsel campus, sections of Crane Avenue have been part of the Congregational footprint of the property. The house with the longest standing connection to the campus is often referred to as the “Irish cottage,” and is home to Sr. Joan O’Sullivan and Sr. Patricia Sheridan.

The cottage is as welcoming as you can imagine, and despite its smaller size, it is oftentimes the gathering place for groups, both large and small. Sisters Joan and Pat do not think twice about hosting their neighboring Sisters of the Divine Compassion (RDCs) weekly at their home for Centering prayer as well as monthly for their prayer group. They enjoy it.

The Sisters, who became friends in the 1970s, not only share a wonderful friendship and home, they share similar interests. They are both artists. Sr. Pat is a visual artist, and Sr. Joan is a restoration specialist. They worked together at the RDC Counseling Center, where Sr. Pat has been the Director for the past 12 years. They are both educators and administrators who have served the marginalized, including children in foster care and those with special needs, as well as the terminally ill. And, of course, both Sisters share a love of their Irish heritage.

“I feel lucky and blessed to be living with Joan, and to have great neighbors, our two houses across the street and all the people of Crane Avenue. It is a nice place to live,” Sr. Pat Sheridan shared. Just steps away are two additional homes where eight Sisters of the Divine Compassion reside. Together, the Sisters in the three residences on Crane make up a small community that live together in mission, grateful for their friendships,

sense of security, stability and the spirituality they share. "Although we are all busy working and volunteering, it is a blessing to have the opportunity to be together, and get to know each other better,” Sr. Lenore Smith said.

Sr. Lenore was co-Director of the College of New Rochelle Education Center for 37 years, and taught at St. Bernard’s, Holy Name of Jesus and Good Counsel Elementary Schools. Sister continues to serve children by volunteering at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital. She is also a member of the Pastoral Care Team and the Ministry of Prayer and Presence. Sr. Kristin Donworth, who is currently serving a second term on the RDC Leadership Team agrees. In addition to her role on the RDC Leadership Team, Sr. Kristin is liaison to the Health Care Team, and is the Properties, Building and Archives Administrator. "I feel as if we now have the time to really live in mission. More than ever, we are a compassionate presence to others,” Sr. Kristin shared.

"It is so gratifying to live so close to Good Counsel. The beauty of the property is exceptional and distinctive to the White Plains area,” Sr. Helen Coldrick expressed. Sister Helen served as the Congregation’s President, and a History Professor at Good Counsel College/College of White Plains and Pace University. Sister was also Co-Vicar for Religious for the Archdiocese of New York. Smith, Pat Sheridan, Ellen McGrath Anne Kniphuisen, Joan O’Sullivan

Living in community on Crane has also provided the Sisters with a new perspective. Beloved by all of the students and families she interacted with for over five decades, Sr. Ellen McGrath previously spent 57 years in large-group community living.

“It is nice to have children in the neighborhood, and to experience living in a smaller community,” Sr. Ellen shared.

Known as the “great communicator,” Sr. Ellen enjoys reaching out to former students, colleagues, homebound elderly and friends. Reflecting on her life work in education, Sr. Ellen loved and treasures her ministries at St. Bernard’s Elementary School, Good Counsel College, and the 37 years she spent at Good Counsel Academy, where she was often referred to as the “Voice of Good Counsel.” After three years at Salesian High School, Sister retired, and now volunteers at the Caregiver Center at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital and at the RDC office on campus. Sr. Ellen continues to be a compassionate presence to all whom she meets.

Sr. Anne Kniphuisen, who began her ministry at Our Lady of Sorrows Elementary School, returned to White Plains after 47 years at St. John the Evangelist School in Mahopac, where she was a teacher and Assistant Principal. Sr. Anne enjoys the time she spends with her dear friends from her RDC Community, St. John’s and family friends she has held so dear over the years.

“I love being close to each other after all these years. We are also blessed with great neighbors who look out for us, and I am so grateful and happy when our friends from near and far visit. It is really wonderful,” Sr. Anne expressed.

Sr. Anne continues to volunteer with Shepherd’s Flock, serving the working poor in Westchester County and is a member of the Divine Compassion Pastoral Care Team, Ministry of Prayer and Presence, as well as the Golf Classic Committee.

Sr. Lauren McLeod has lived on Crane Avenue since her move from Mahopac in 1981. In addition to working for Catholic Charities for several years, Sister is a founding member of the RDC Counseling Center. Sister continues to practice there in addition to offering her counseling services to a local parish elementary school administered and staffed by Sisters of the Divine Compassion. “My many years living on Crane Avenue have helped me understand small communities, interacting with each other, helping in times of need and enjoying each other’s company,” Sr. Lauren said.

Sisters Lucille and Helen Coldrick, RDC

“They are just wonderful, and so much fun to be around,” Sr. Ruth said. It is not surprising that Sr. Ruth enjoys children, as she was a first, second and third grade teacher at St. Mary’s in Katonah, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Elmsford for over 20 years, as well as St. Frances de Chantal in the Bronx for 24 years. During the summers, Sr. Ruth worked at the Dwelling Place in NYC, caring for homeless women. Sister continues to serve on the Divine Compassion Golf Classic Committee, the Pastoral Care Committee, and drives Sisters to appointments and other activities. Althea Fusco, ADC and Sr. Kristin Donworth, RDC

Sisters Pat Smith and Ruth Murphy marvel at the fact that fourteen years have passed since they moved into their home on Crane.

“It is wonderful to have a house full of Sisters. We really enjoy each other," Sr. Pat said. Sister taught in several of the Divine Compassion schools in the Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and Putnam counties and provided comprehensive geriatric care at Good Counsel. During her days working with the Summer in the City program in the 1960s, Sr. Pat worked and lived together with RDCs, as well as Sisters from other communities – an experience Sister fondly remembers.

Reflecting on the RDC mission of compassion, Sr. Ruth shared, “With each assignment and at different times in our lives, we serve people where they are, and in that service, we learn different aspects of compassion.” The Sisters on Crane continue to live and work in the mission of compassion, supporting each other and those they serve all along the way.

Today, as the Chairperson of the Pastoral Care Team, Sr. Pat continues in her mission to bring comfort to others, especially the sick and aging. As she sits at her computer to disseminate prayer requests, she thinks of and prays for each person individually. What a fantastic way to utilize technology!

Sr. Ruth Murphy, who grew up in the White Plains area, enjoys living on Crane, as it is close to her friends and family. One of the activities she enjoys most is babysitting for her niece’s children.

Jubilarians AD MULTOS ANNOS! The Sisters of the Divine Compassion joyfully celebrate the special anniversaries of five of our Sisters, dated from their entrance into the religious life. As certified teachers, administrators, counselors and advocates, our Sisters have shared their unique, personal gifts with children, teens, and adults at all levels of education, administration, and social service platforms.

70th Anniversary Sister Celesta Kelley, RDC, began her life-long ministry in

education in elementary school before advancing to teach Science at both Preston and John F. Kennedy High Schools. Sr. Mary Celesta never left a stone unturned as a Geology Professor, teaching generations of college students about rocks and the layers of the earth and all its components for 35 years. Sr. Celesta had the unique opportunity to teach at three different colleges—Good Counsel, College of White Plains and Pace University—all in the same classroom!

Sister Margaret Keogan, RDC, is a graduate of both Good Counsel

Academy and Good Counsel College. Sister was a teacher at St. Bernard's School in White Plains for nine years. In 1962, she moved to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in Elmsford, where she lived, taught English and Math and was the Director of the Sports Program for almost 50 years. Mount Carmel alumni praise Sr. Margaret saying, “She made me who I am today!”

60th Anniversary Sister Janet Meehan, RDC, began her teaching ministry at Preston

High School in the Bronx, teaching math and art. In 1967, she was reassigned to the newly opened John F. Kennedy High School in Somers. There she taught art and mechanical drawing, and served as the Art Department Chair until her retirement in June 2014. For many years, Sr. Janet was also a dedicated coach of the girls track team at Kennedy, winning awards regularly at track meets. In 1990, she was named Gannett Westchester’s Coach of the Year.

Sister M. Ruth Murphy, RDC, was a teacher at St. Mary’s in Katonah

and Our Lady of Mt.Carmel in Elmsford for over 20 years, as well as St. Frances de Chantal in the Bronx for 24 years. During the summers, Sr. Ruth also worked at the Good Counsel summer camp for children with special needs and at the Dwelling Place in NYC, caring for homeless women. Sister continues to serve on the Divine Compassion Golf Classic Committee and the Pastoral Care Committee.

Sister Patricia Sheridan, RDC, has been the Director of the RDC

Counseling Center in White Plains since 2008. Sr. Pat also worked as a social worker at White Plains Hospital Mental Health Clinic, St. Agatha’s Foster Care Residence, Peekskill Mental Health Program, and was part of the educational outreach team at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. Prior to earning her social work degree, Sr. Pat taught in Good Counsel Elementary, St. Anthony’s and was a teacher and principal of Our Lady of Sorrows in White Plains. She served as the Coordinator for Health Services and Sacristan for the Congregation for ten years. 31
