Letter FROM THE President Walk on through the wind. Walk on through the rain though your dreams be tossed and blown. Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart, and you’ll never walk alone!* Dear Friends, As I reflect on the past year, the scripture quote from Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans for a future full of hope,” remains steadfast in my heart. We could not have predicted that the hardships and challenges of 2020 would continue into 2021. We remained hopeful and faithful, and with God’s grace, we were slowly reunited with our loved ones. What a special blessing it was for the Sisters of the Divine Compassion to come together with our families and friends to celebrate wonderful milestones over the past year! It was a joy to welcome one and all to honor our three remarkable elementary school principals, Sisters Mary Stephen Healey, Marie Cecile Larizza and Mary Alice Reamer, at our annual Golf Classic and Dinner Reception! From sun up to sun down (and beyond) it was a glorious celebration of our Sisters and all of you! We were thrilled to reunite with so many of our alumnae and alumni representing several “Divine Compassion schools.” We finally joined with our Good Counsel Academy High School and Good Counsel College/College of White Plains alumnae for their Reunions! We celebrated our RDC Associates’ 40th and Our Lady of Good Counsel Guild’s 80th anniversaries! What an extraordinary blessing it was to celebrate the 135th Anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion! As we plan for the future of our Community we proudly march on with hope in our hearts knowing our interdependence and “Collaboration for Compassion” will be a pathway to ensuring the continuation of the mission and charism of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion. Our Foundress, Mother Mary Veronica, articulated the enduring community value of collaboration in fulfilling the Divine Compassion mission when she advised, “I cannot do this alone; we cannot do this alone.” And from the very beginning to this very day, you have always walked with us. We are very grateful for your unwavering generosity and support in every way. We pray that you and your loved ones will receive God’s choicest blessings ~ and keep you healthy and safe. Sincerely in the Divine Compassion, Sr. Laura Donovan, RDC President

Collaboration for Compassion Together with our Companions and Associates, the Sisters of the Divine Compassion remain a responsive, collaborative, missionfocused Community dedicated to the healing and empowerment of all people. This is our mission and our spirituality. It is what brings us closer into the hearts of the people we serve. Our story continues to shape our vision, and requires us to accept change that will bring new strengths, as well as challenges to our Congregation. As we walk together into the future, we have a renewed focus on interdependence. At our Chapter Meeting in September 2020, the Sisters, Associates and Companions of the Divine Compassion voted to accept the Charter for Compassion. It provides an instrument through which the Divine Compassion Community can advance our mission internally and externally by extending our presence and charism of compassion well into the future. The Charter for Compassion encourages the formation of a community united in its mission to create a world that is peaceful, kind and promotes happiness. It is a call to invest in compassion with actions, time, and resources. For the Divine Compassion Community, the Charter represents a call to advocate for compassion. Our membership provides an umbrella to engage people in a collaborative effort to extend compassion within and beyond the communities we serve. The importance of collaboration in continuing to fulfill the Divine Compassion mission is essential to our longevity and legacy.

The Charter for Compassion is a document that transcends religious, ideological, and national differences. Supported by leading thinkers from many traditions, the Charter activates the Golden Rule around the world. The Charter for Compassion is a cooperative effort to restore not only compassionate thinking but, more importantly, compassionate action to the center of religious, moral and political life. Compassion is the principled determination to put ourselves in the shoes of the other, and lies at the heart of all religious and ethical systems.
The Charter for Compassion: The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect.
emphatically It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others—even our enemies—is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion. We therefore call upon all men and women to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures ~ to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity ~ to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings—even those regarded as enemies. We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity. It is the path to enlightenment, and indispensable to the creation of a just economy and a peaceful global community.

RDC Associates’ 40th Anniversary Forty years ago, the first group of five Associates of the Divine Compassion answered the call to extend the mission and charism of the Divine Compassion to the laity. On December 4, 1981, the Chapel of the Divine Compassion was filled with Sisters, families and friends, who joined together to celebrate the Associates and the RDC Community’s new venture. Today, more than 50 Associates, including lay women and men, single and married, continue to be non-vowed members of the RDC Community, sharing in the Divine Compassion spirituality and ministries. Each Associate’s level of involvement is different, but over the years the group has become more involved in Community life and is integral to the work of the RDC ministries.
Happy Anniversary to our RDC Associates and thank you for your enduring friendship, partnership and dedication!

Divine Compassion Community Celebrates 135 Years of its Founding! July 2, 2021 marked the 135th Anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion. Although a limited number of guests were able to attend due to pandemic restrictions, Sisters, Associates, and Companions were grateful to be able to mark this extraordinary milestone together with a Liturgy in the Chapel of the Divine Compassion. Empowered by God’s love, the Sisters of the Divine Compassion are called to be the compassionate presence of God in the world. For more than 135 years, our ministries in social and spiritual welfare, faith formation, human development and education have affected the lives of numerous women, men, children and families. From our earliest history, we have walked with those suffering. In the true spirit of community and collaboration, we support others toward selfsufficiency, meaning and wholeness in their lives. Together with our Associates and Companions we remain a responsive, collaborative, mission-focused community. We partner with various community representatives, donors, and volunteers to enable the liberation and empowerment of all people. This is our mission and our spirituality. It is what brings us closer into the hearts of the people we serve. We honor our Founders, celebrate our Sisters and thank our friends and supporters for all you do to support our mission of compassion.

Our Lady of Good Counsel Guild
In 1913, Mother Mary Aloysia created the Auxiliary of Our Lady of Good Counsel. The group was composed of women interested in the Divine Compassion Community and its works. The Auxiliary’s expressed purpose was to “aid the Sisters in every means.” One of their most significant and earliest accomplishments was to lead an effort to fund the completion of the building of the Divine Compassion Convent. With the support of the Auxiliary and other groups the final three wings of the Convent were completed in 1923.
In the spring of 1941, now Superior General and President of Good Counsel College, Mother Mary Aloysia established The Mothers’ Guild. Those eligible to join were mothers of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, mothers of students of Good Counsel High School and College, as well as College alumnae. The purpose of The Guild was to continue to assist the Sisters in their various works and ministries, and promote Good Counsel College. The first meeting of The Guild was held on September 25, 1941. Twenty-three members attended. By December 1941, the bylaws changed to allow others to join, as many were interested in helping Mother Aloysia and Good Counsel College. At the February 1942 meeting, the name was officially changed from Mothers’ Auxiliary of Good Counsel College to Our Lady of Good Counsel College Guild. At its peak, there were over 300 Guild members. Over eight decades Our Lady of Good Counsel Guild has been instrumental in sharing in the charism of the RDC Community and working with the Sisters to accomplish stated goals and objectives. In October 2021, The Guild commemorated its 80th Anniversary with a Mass, celebrated by Reverend Thomas Collins. During the Mass, Fr. Tom commented that it was his great honor to share in the celebration, knowing the accomplishments of the group, and remembering, Sr. Mary Margareta McKenna, who was the Moderator of the Guild for several years, and a dear friend and mentor to him. “We have been truly blessed by the spirit and energy of the women of Our Lady of Good Counsel Guild who work to further the Divine Compassion mission, through social and spiritual meetings and raising funds for the works of our Community,” Sr. Laura Donovan said. “Congratulations on and hats off to all the members and officers of the Board, including Board President, Trudi DeDonato, Vice President, Rita Vitiello and officers, Laura Amadio, Peg Cataldo, June 6

Pasello, as well as Moderator, Sr. Mary Lynn Kellogg and Sr. Rita Dougherty who succeeds Eunice Pinto as Treasurer of the Guild,” Sr. Laura added. In commemoration of its 80th Anniversary, Guild members and Sisters joined together to honor current moderator, Sr. Mary Lynn Kellogg, RDC, and Guild Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. Laura Amadio for their work and unwavering dedication. For Mrs. Amadio and Sr. Mary Lynn, being honored was a wonderful and humbling experience. “I am forever grateful to The Guild members, past and present, who give of themselves so very generously and selflessly to continue helping the Sisters of the Divine Compassion fulfill our mission,” Sr. Mary Lynn Kellogg shared. “Being a member of The Guild is a wonderful and spiritual experience. Working with the Sisters is great! They are so encouraging and supportive, and the staff is so helpful and accommodating,” Mrs. Amadio expressed. “It was a great honor to be acknowledged at the 80th Anniversary Luncheon. A day we will never forget!” she added.
Sr. Mary Lynn Kellogg, RDC and Mrs. Laura Amadio
The Guild of our Lady of Good Counsel remains a vibrant and devoted group.” I have been a member of the Guild for over 25 years, and President for the majority of those years,” Trudi DeDonato said. “It has been a privilege and honor to work with the Sisters in their ministry and a wonderful group of Guild officers and members. It is truly a blessing.” In celebration of its dedication and longevity, Sr. Helen Coldrick, RDC, shared a quote from Mother Mary Aloysia from 1948 that remains relevant today. “The Success of the Guild is very dear to my heart. I could never express in words my joy that, after waiting so long for its foundation, we now have a group of ladies who are giving generously of their time and energy to make every undertaking attractively successful, both socially and financially. That God will bless these dear friends and reward their generous sacrifices is my earnest prayer.”
Sr. Laura Donovan, RDC with Guild Board Members, Rita Vitiello, Laura Amadio, Sr. Mary Lynn Kellogg, RDC, Trudi DeDonato, Peg Cataldo and Sr. Rita Dougherty, RDC
Mother Mary Aloysia would be inspired by this remarkable milestone, and so pleased that the dedication and spirit of the Guild members and mission endures! 7

We were blessed with a beautiful day on the links and under the stars at Fenway Golf Club. Thanks to our dear friend and sponsor, Mrs. Gwen Fisher for hosting us. A grand success, this year’s event included our annual grand prize raffle, gift baskets and an entertaining live auction, expertly facilitated by Skip Morton. Thanks to our cherished friends and guests, over $130,000 in net proceeds was raised to support our mission and our Sisters.

f Classic & Dinner Reception “We wholeheartedly thank the Golf Classic Committee, sponsors, donors, golfers, dinner guests and volunteers for your enduring love and support of our Community, for all that you did to support this event, and for your remarkable generosity to us throughout the years,” RDC President Sr. Laura Donovan said. Our honored Sisters have exercised enlightened leadership to three generations of students. They have always been dedicated, hard-working, and compassionate principals, but during the pandemic of the last two years, Sisters Stephen, Cecile and Mary Alice have worked tirelessly with their faculty and staff to provide a safe, loving and enriching school environment for their students and families. We pray for their continued happiness and success.

Jubilarians
The Sisters of the Divine Compassion joyfully celebrate the 60th and 70th anniversaries of six of our Sisters! As certified teachers, administrators, counselors and therapists, our Sisters have shared their unique, personal gifts with children, teens and adults at all levels of education, administration, health services and social service platforms.
Sister Christine McGee, RDC (Formerly, Sister Mary Christine) has a life-long connection to the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, having attended St. Frances de Chantal, Preston High School and Good Counsel College. Sr. Christine earned a Masters Degree in Theology from Manhattan College, and a certification in Special Education from Caldwell College. Now celebrating her 70th Jubilee, Sr. Christine’s dedication to her ministry in education spans over 50 years! In the Archdiocese of New York, Sister educated students in the primary grades at St. Mary’s in Katonah, St. Joseph’s in Croton Falls and St. Frances de Chantal in the Bronx for over a decade. In the Diocese of Metuchen, NJ, Sr. Christine was a teacher at Christ the King School. In the Archdiocese of Newark, Sister was a tutor at St. Genevieve School, and a parttime tutor for IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) for non-public school services in Union County. Sr. Christine then earned a post-masters certificate in Aging from Hunter College School of Social Work/Brookdale Center on Aging. For over 40 years, Sr. Christine was a part time, long-term licensed care facility nursing aide in both New York and New Jersey. Sister currently resides at Wartburg in Mt. Vernon, where she enjoys participating in the numerous activities offered there, taking walks around the beautiful campus and assisting other residents as needed.
Sister Joan O’Sullivan, RDC (Formerly, Sister M. Victoire) celebrates her 70th Jubilee in 2022! Sister entered religious life after graduating from Preston High School in 1952, and began her “life-long journey of learning.” While deepening her spiritual life and learning her role in religious life within the RDC Congregation, Sister was also trained to teach at Good Counsel College. Sr. Joan began her teaching ministry in 1955 when she joined a team of Sisters who opened St. John the Evangelist School in Mahopac. Sister taught first grade at St. John’s until she was reassigned to St. Joseph’s in Croton Falls in 1963, followed by Holy Name School in Valhalla. As principal of St. Mary’s in Katonah, Sister embarked upon a new and enlightening experience, that of ascertaining the individual needs and talents of each student. During this time, Sr. Joan also became aware of the needs of students who were academically or behaviorally challenged. Following her term as principal, Sister represented Catholic School education on a federally-funded grant called Project Mainstream. A member of a team of six consultants, Sister worked to research, develop and implement strategies for administrators and teachers to engage children with special needs in an inclusive school environment. The project concluded with the passing of Public Law 94-142, which guaranteed a free, appropriate public education to each child with a disability. After earning a doctorate in psychology, Sr, Joan worked as a teacher of children with special needs. In 1996, Sister transitioned from teaching and joined the RDC Center for Counseling and Human Development as a psychologist and partner. “It was the best team of mental health professionals I ever worked with,” Sr. Joan said. In 2012, Sr. Joan developed The Earth Restoration Project to transform a junk yard into a beautiful, four-acre parcel of God’s earth, including woodlands and a 150+ year old barn. The transformation took five years. Sr. Joan remains a life-long learner of compassionate presence to herself and others.

Jubilarians Sister Catherine Halpin, RDC (Formerly, Sister Mary Paula) celebrates her 60th jubilee this year, having entered religious life in 1962. Her early ministry in education began at St. Anthony’s school in West Harrison, followed by St. Lawrence O’Toole in Brewster, NY. Sister transitioned to administration, initially as the Director of Religious Education for St. Columbanus in Cortlandt, NY. She was appointed to her first Parish Minister position in 1975, where she served with a team of RDC Sisters at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church in Mansura, Louisiana, followed by St. Peter’s Parish in Minnesota, and Sacred Heart and St. Francis Xavier in northern New Hampshire. For 15 years, Sister served as a chaplain, initially in Boston, and then in Knoxville, Tennessee at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Sister then became the medical center’s hospice chaplain. Sr. Cathy and a co-worker started Kids in Crisis (KICS), a nonprofit organization in eastern Tennessee for children and families who were grieving loss of all kinds. After six years the ministry was acquired by the largest mental health corporation in eastern Tennessee, and Sr. Cathy became an advocate for sexual assault survivors. Now retired, Sister volunteers with a program that teaches English as a second language to immigrants from all over the globe. Sr. Cathy is an avid reader. Sister enjoys time with her friends and daily walks with her dog, Bodhi.
Sister Blanche Haughey, RDC (Formerly, Sister Mary Blanche) Born and raised in Yonkers, NY, Sr. Blanche graduated from Good Counsel College and entered religious life in 1962. Sister earned her Masters degree in Education at St. John’s University. Education has been her life’s ministry, having taught in several schools from 1965 to 1981, including St. John the Baptist in Yonkers, St. Anthony’s in West Harrison, St. Theresa’s in Briarcliff, as well as St. Bernard’s Elementary School and Good Counsel High School in White Plains. Sister was also a teacher and assistant principal at Sacred Heart in Hartsdale. For ten years, Sr. Blanche served as a teacher and administrator at Pace University. Sister was the Director of Pace Little School and Assistant Administrator at the Delany Center for Educational Enrichment which worked to improve children’s developmental reading skills. Currently, Sr. Blanche is a member of the RDC Pastoral Care Team. Sister visits with our Sisters at St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry and Wartburg Retirement Community in Mt. Vernon. She also loves to read and watch sports, especially college basketball.
“The people we have met and served blessed us with their love, compassion and friendship. We live in gratitude for all that is and has been.” 22
Sister Susan McCarthy, RDC (Formerly, Sister Julia Marie) Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Sr. Susan McCarthy was five years old when her family moved to White Plains. Sr. Susan was introduced to the RDCs when she attended St. Bernard’s Elementary School, and continued at Good Counsel Academy High School. Sister’s first twenty-five years of ministry were spent as a teacher at St. Mary’s in Katonah, Preston High School and Good Counsel Academy High School. Later, Sr. Susan served as an Associate Pastor at several parishes, including St. Francis Xavier in Manhattan, Christ the King and St. Nicholas of Tolentine in the Bronx. In 2000, Sister moved to Little Rock, Arkansas to work in the Diocese of Little Rock as Promotions Coordinator for Little Rock Scripture Study (LRSS). Sister spent 15 years in this ministry, traveling throughout the Unites States, exhibiting and providing workshops on how to use LRSS materials for Bible study. Currently, Sr. Susan is a Board Member with both SHORE/I CARE and Marydell Faith and Life Center. Sister is a member of the RDC Pastoral Care Team. She visits with our Sisters at St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry. Sister also volunteers at Wartburg, where she provides Communion services, and helps organize activities for the Divine Compassion Sisters and other residents. Sr. Susan enjoys sports, especially the NY Mets, as well as playing Canasta and Sudoku online.
Sister Pamela Wagner, RDC (Formerly, Sister Mary Joseph) entered religious life after graduating from Preston High School in 1962. With a degree in English Literature from Good Counsel College, Sister was assigned to teach fourth grade at St. Joseph’s in Croton Falls. Sister was then assigned to St. Lawrence O’Toole in Brewster where she taught seventh and eighth graders for three years. Sr. Pam became the Director of the Religious Education program for adults and children there. While earning her Master’s Degree in Religious Studies at Boston College, Sister was introduced to parish ministry. With a team of RDC Sisters, Sr. Pam served as parish minister at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church in Mansura, Louisiana, followed by St. Peter’s Parish in Minnesota and Sacred Heart and St. Francis Xavier in northern New Hampshire. In 1990, with guidance from Sisters Alice Feeley and Lucille Coldrick, Sr. Pam and Sr. Fran Liston began to work with migrant farmworkers in the Black Dirt region of N.Y. They created the Mustard Seed Migrant Ministry, which provided a gathering place of support for migrant farmworkers and their children. The ministry grew. The farmworkers themselves took on leadership roles, and after 26 years, our Sisters retired; however, the ministry continues. Sr. Pam treasures the close friendships formed with religious and lay communities throughout her ministries, and feels blessed to be a part of the RDC Companions from its beginnings. In her “retirement,” Sr. Pam loves to walk, read, cook, be with family and friends and visit with neighbors. She loves to travel both near and far, and enjoys being a part of a non-denominational prayer group.

We Remember our faithful RDC Associate George Hintz • March 5, 1938 – March 9, 2021
How Will We Find Our Way Home It is a challenging time for our nation and our world. We have lost, learned and questioned our lives in so many capacities. Sr. Alice Feeley’s, “How Will We Find Our Way Home,” is a collection of poems that are often reflective of questions that creep into our ordinary lives, as we make our way in the current challenging climate. “Poetry has something to say in our confused time,” Sr. Alice explains. “It can help us find our way.”
Sr. Alice Feeley, RDC
Inspired by a question Sr. Alice’s dear friend asked upon her incumbent death, “How Will We Find Our Way Home” is Sister’s second book of poetry that inspires personal, societal and environmental reflection.
