2023 Annual Report
Established in 2013, the Mother Mary Veronica Legacy Society originally included benefactors who had chosen to remember the Sisters of the Divine Compassion in their wills. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the program, membership has been expanded to include donors who contribute a gift of $10,000 or more within a calendar year. Together, our major and planned gift donors significantly contribute to the care and support of our Sisters, and further advance the mission of compassion for future generations.

“That God will be so good as to let us take the Divine Compassion into our hands and go and give it to others.”
- Msgr. Thomas S. Preston
Dear Friends,
The Sisters, Associates and Companions of the Divine Compassion live our lives with the intention to love, be joyful and serve others. These are attributes of our charism of compassion. It is the spiritual gift God gives us to share with others.
As the world around us remains in conflict and civil unrest, it is more important than ever that we live our mission to be the compassionate presence of God in the world. In the pages ahead, we are happy to share how your faithful support helps our Sisters live in mission where we live, work and volunteer.
Also included is an update on our plan for the future of our charism of compassion. We are dedicated to journeying together to create communities in which each person, without exception, is celebrated and treated with justice, equity and respect.
YOU are our legacy – our ambassadors of compassion! We are very grateful for your generosity, friendship and faith in us throughout the years. We thank you for the difference you make in the worlds in which you work, travel and reside. We count on you, our partners in mission, for your continued support as we work together to share our charism of our compassion.
Lovingly in the Divine Compassion,
RDCPresident

Created in 2008 by religious historian, scholar and best-selling author Karen Armstrong, the Charter for Compassion is a global, cooperative effort to restore not only compassionate thinking but, more importantly, compassionate action to the center of religious, moral and political life. Over two million people worldwide have signed the Charter. Grounded in a self-organizing structure of best practices, the Charter for Compassion organization engages individuals and communities in collaborative partnerships in compassion.
The Sisters, Associates and Companions of the Divine Compassion affi rmed the exploration of the Charter for Compassion in 2020 and began to organize internally to develop a local initiative. In 2022, a Collaboration for Compassion (CfC) Advisory Committee, including Sisters, Associates, Companions and Alumnae from Divine Compassion schools, was established, and early research about establishing a Community of Compassion pilot program began in White Plains.
In 2023, the Divine Compassion Community became a member of the Charter for Compassion, and the CfC Advisory Committee met with government officials, nonprofit and membership organizations, corporate citizens and more to:
• Identify “discomforts” in the White Plains community—those issues that are causing pain and suffering to individuals or groups or the entire community—which can be addressed and alleviated through compassionate action.
• Find out what is already being done, or has been done, to address the most challenging issues in White Plains, and learn what has worked and not worked, and, recognize and acknowledge those successes.
• Invite people to join us in creating a Community of Compassion in order to give voice and services to people in need in White Plains.
We learned that homelessness/housing insecurity is one of the top concerns in the White Plains community. With insight from government officials, experts and community advocates, the Divine Compassion Community began a collaborative, pilot initiative to create a Community of Compassion, focused on addressing homelessness/housing insecurity in White Plains.
In December 2023, we hosted a meeting of professionals from the government, health care, faith-based, nonprofit and corporate sectors to discuss and identify priority focus areas for the initiative.
In January 2024, our proposal to create a Community of Compassion initiative in White Plains was reviewed and approved by the Charter for Compassion organization. In February 2024, representatives from the Charter provided guidance on best practices for consideration as we move forward.
Our Collaboration for Compassion Advisory Committee in White Plains will continue to prioritize our objectives and plan for the launch of this initiative in the coming year.
Join us in our efforts. Individuals, families and organizations can join the Charter for Compassion! Learn more at charterforcompassion.org.
“To know them is to love them!” This is a sentiment shared over and over by alumnae(i), friends, colleagues and neighbors, who so faithfully and lovingly support our Divine Compassion Sisters. It is not surprising that this Community is beloved by generations. As an alumnus recently shared, “We were so blessed to attend schools in which we were encouraged and loved unselfishly and wholeheartedly each and every day by the Sisters of the Divine Compassion.”
Although fewer in number, the “Divines,” as they are often referred to at Wartburg in Mt. Vernon, continue to live in mission, sharing their charism of compassion. Currently, twenty-two of our Sisters live in community at Wartburg. When visiting, you get the sense that everyone knows our Sisters, as they are so actively involved there. Several of our Sisters volunteer to help with organizing events and other get-togethers for birthdays, holidays and more.
Our Sisters lead and attend prayer groups, help with shopping, gardening and visiting with memory care patients. In addition, Sr. Alice Conrad continues to serve the working poor, operating Shepherd’s Flock from her cottage at Wartburg. Our Sisters bowl, sing and dance, walk, practice tai chi and so much more. There is not much our Sisters are not involved in where they live.
“I have been blessed to see compassion-in-action in various capacities at Wartburg,” Sr. Felicitas Russell explained. “Our Sisters join with so many others to be of service. We keep our eyes and hearts open to help and enjoy the people that live and work here.” In addition to volunteering for numerous activities at Wartburg, Sr. Felicitas helped to establish and manage a weekly “convenience store,” so residents can purchase toiletries, stationary and confectioneries on the Wartburg campus.
Sr. Mary Alice O’Brien has lived at Wartburg for almost four years. For those that remember the television show, “The Love Boat”, Sr. Mary Alice personifies Julie, the cruise director! She knows everyone, volunteers throughout the campus, and has a special gift for bringing people together and spreading joy.
Because Sr. Mary Alice initially lived in Meadowview Assisted Living with Sr. Susan Merritt and now resides at an independent living cottage in Lohman Village, she knows a lot of people. “When I see people that are new, I introduce myself and I remember their names and stay connected to people. I believe a hello by name and a smile means so much,”
People certainly appreciate Sr. Mary Alice’s compassionate, kind and joyful spirit. “I am a cheerleader, and I think people enjoy that. I sometimes spontaneously get up at musical events to dance and sing, encouraging smiles and joy,” Sr. Mary Alice shared. If a volunteer is needed, Sr. Mary Alice is there. Sister helps to organize monthly gatherings, sing-a-longs and other special events. “There are so many people who have helped me along my life’s journey. I am so happy to help others.”
Sr. Maureen McMahon moved to Wartburg from Crotonon-Hudson two years ago. For more than 45 years, Sister has dedicated her ministry to spiritual direction and retreat work, and continues to do so. As the Director of the Center of Compassion in Dover Plains, NY, and most recently in Croton-on-Hudson, Sr. Maureen brought diverse groups of people together to care and look out for each other.
After settling into Wartburg, Sr. Maureen realized that our Sisters were very involved in many of the activities at Wartburg, but some did not have a time set apart to pray together. With God as her guide, Sr. Maureen decided to offer a monthly prayer group for the Sisters of the Divine Compassion that live in the Meadowview building at Wartburg.
“Each day, I ask God to use me. I try to say yes, knowing God will help me.” At her new home at Wartburg, Sr. Maureen feels a sense of peace and gratitude to be reunited with her Sisters, many of whom she has known since high school.
Each of our Sisters at Wartburg shares the charism of compassion not only with residents, but staff and visitors, as well. In doing so, they contribute to a positive spirit where they live and volunteer.
Sisters who need more specialized, long term care are living at Cabrini of Westchester. Overlooking the Hudson River in Dobbs Ferry, Cabrini provides a serene setting for our Sisters. Mass is offered daily in the chapel or on the television in their rooms. Organized by Sr. Gertrude Kallenbach who visits the RDCs weekly, our Sisters often enjoy trips to the in-house café together, where they catch up and visit with Sisters, family and friends. We are very grateful to our Sisters, Associates, Companions, family members, friends, our Health Care Team and patient advocates who continually visit Cabrini to care for, reminisce and share their love with our Sisters who live there. We are also grateful to the staff at Cabrini who arrange Masses for our Sisters to celebrate Founders’ Day and other liturgical celebrations throughout the year. Our Sisters living at Cabrini continue to share their charism of compassion, most often through prayer for all those in need.
Sr. Terry Young, a gifted artist and photographer, who lives at Marian Woods, can often be found sharing her charism of compassion on social media. For those that do not follow Sr. Terry on Instagram @terry_amelia3538, you are missing out. Sr. Terry’s beautiful and inspirational posts are a gift to one and all, especially with all that is happening in our world. Sr. Terry provides insight and spiritual guidance in beautifully designed posts that are a great way to start or end your day. Sister’s art and photography is also featured on our website at divinecompassion.org.
Eighteen of our Sisters of the Divine Compassion continue to live independently. Whether working or retired, our Sisters stress the importance of sharing their compassion with those in their community and around the world. Our Sisters are in ministry as principals, teachers and teaching assistants at three elementary schools in Westchester County.
Sr. Fran Liston with some of her favorite Mustard Seed memorabilia Happy 100th Birthday to Sr. Mary Rose Golden! Our Sisters are spiritual counselors, therapists, pastoral care givers and social justice advocates. They volunteer and serve as board members for food pantries and nonprofit organizations serving the poor, working poor and those experiencing housing insecurity. They operate the Preston Center for Compassion in the Bronx, and our Sisters support local civic organizations and even serve as the Grand Marshal or Aides to the Grand Marshal in St. Patrick’s Day parades.
To quote Sr. Joan O’Sullivan whose ministries included education, special education, counseling and environmental restoration, “Presence is a gift. Just to live is holy.”
The Sisters, Associates and Companions of the Divine Compassion continue to be present wherever and whenever they can in order to support others toward to self-sufficiency, meaning and wholeness in their lives. In planning for the future of the charism of compassion, the RDC Community partners with various community representatives, donors, and volunteers to enable the liberation and empowerment of all people. The RDC Leadership Team recently explained, “Sharing the charism of compassion is our mission and our spirituality. It is what brings us closer into the hearts of the people we serve now and in the future.”
The 25th Anniversary Golf Classic & Dinner Reception was a celebration for the ages! How thrilling it was to remember our Sisters and all of our dear friends and benefactors who have worked tirelessly during these 25 years to help us reach this remarkable milestone!
Though the years have been fi lled with joy, a few challenges have kept us “up to par.” After years of being spoiled with perfect golf weather, Mother Nature began to dole out a few curve balls. How could we ever forget the bitterly cold day we had in 2022? In October 2023, record rain fall wreaked havoc on golf courses throughout Westchester County. On the eve of our 25th Anniversary Golf Classic, we were faced with a nail-biting challenge—either cancel the event or ask our golfers to play without golf carts! Our prayers were answered, as our stalwart golfers went above and beyond, literally walking the distance of Fenway’s challenging course to lend their support. It turned out to be a great day on the course, followed by another memorable evening at our annual dinner reception!
Divine Compassion Sisters, Associates, Companions, alumnae and friends enjoyed a delightfully entertaining evening. A “trip down memory lane” video, produced by our own Liz Vazquez and narrated by Sr. Jane Keegan, reminded us all of legendary Divine Compassion Golf Classics and spotlighted so many supporters who had significantly contributed to its successful 25 years. One of the evening’s most memorable moments was the sensational musical performance by “The Divines,” a gutsy group of our Sisters who sang and danced to “We are Family!” It was a perfect song to represent the feelings we share and the atmosphere we enjoy each and every year we gather together. Kudos also go out to this year’s auctioneer, Sr. Mary Alice O’Brien, who energetically facilitated a thoroughly entertaining and record-breaking Live Auction!
Thanks to the generosity and support of so many of you, the 25th Anniversary Golf Classic & Dinner Reception raised over $150,000 in net proceeds for the care and support of our Sisters and the Divine Compassion mission.
In expressing her gratitude, Sr. Laura Donovan, our President, reflected, “Our 25th Anniversary Golf Classic & Dinner
Reception is one for the record books! We are still smiling and sharing our favorite memories of the event. How blessed we are to have such faithful and dedicated friends! We remain ever grateful to our sponsors, donors, golfers and dinner guests for their enduring love, support and remarkable generosity.”
Sr. Laura added, “Abundant thanks to our dedicated Golf Classic Committee who went above and beyond this year to plan and incorporate all of the special touches to make this year’s event such a fun and memorable festivity! We are especially grateful to the committee for managing all the extra, “11th-hour adjustments” in order to host a truly sparkling Silver Jubilee Celebration!”
We look forward to having everyone back again next year!

Sisters of the Divine Compassion were delighted to welcome alumnae “home” to celebrate their Anniversary Reunions.
The Sisters of the Divine Compassion joyfully celebrate the 60th and 70th anniversaries of three of our Sisters! As certified teachers, administrators, counselors, therapists, spiritual advisors and more, our Sisters have shared their unique and personal gifts with children, teens, adults, families and communities at all levels of education, administration, health services and social service platforms.
Sr. Helen Coldrick celebrates her 70th Jubilee this year! The oldest of seven siblings, Sister hails from New York City, where she attended St. Gregory Elementary School. The Coldrick family moved to White Plains, where Sr. Helen was introduced to the Sisters of the Divine Compassion when she attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Academy High School, followed by Good Counsel College. In 1954, Sister earned a bachelor’s degree in history and entered religious life. Sr. Helen also earned a master’s in history from St. John’s University, and a doctorate in history from Fordham University.
Sr. Helen’s 55-year ministry in education is legendary, beginning in 1956 at St. Anthony of Padua where she taught second grade. Sister taught history at Preston High School in the Bronx from 1958 to 1962 before becoming a history professor at Good Counsel College, College of White Plains and Pace University. To this day, college alumnae(i) fondly reminisce about the experiences and wonderful memories of Sr. Helen’s history classes. From 1969 to 1970, Sister was appointed acting president at Good Counsel College.
Sr. Helen served two terms as the President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion from 1992 to 2000. In 2001, her ministry in education took her to Beirut, Lebanon where she taught English to adults. From 2002 until her retirement, Sr. Helen served as Co-Vicar for Religious for the Archdiocese of New York.
Sr. Helen feels blessed to have a wonderful and supportive family, and a life that has been enriched by extraordinary opportunities and experiences. She has traveled extensively, learning about the history and culture of countries including Ireland, France, Vietnam, Lebanon and the Soviet Union. Sister has been an avid reader since childhood and loves her cat, Clio.
Sr. Loretta Marie Schollhamer celebrates her 60th Jubilee this year! The oldest of three siblings, Sister hails from the Bronx, where she attended St. Raymond’s Elementary School. Sister was introduced to the Divine Compassion Community when she attended Preston High School.
After high school, Sr. Loretta entered religious life, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in social science at Good Counsel College. Sister’s early ministry in education began in 1969 at St. Mary’s School in Katonah, where she taught first through fourth grades for eight years. In 1977, Sister’s ministry brought her back to the Bronx, teaching fifth grade students at St. Frances de Chantal until 1985.
Always interested in the health care industry, Sr. Loretta began working at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, where she earned a Certification in Health Care Ministries. At Calvary, Sister gained experience in all aspects of health care, including administration and nursing. In 1986, Sr. Loretta was offered the Resident Services Coordinator position at Kings Harbor Nursing Home. It was at that time that Sr. Loretta’s ministry would take her down another path.
Sr. Loretta found her niche in library science and services, as it combined her love of reading, research and teaching. For 34 years, Sister served as one of only three librarians at Preston High School. Sister loved working with the Preston students, who were full of life. In her three decades at Preston, Sister experienced significant changes in library science, and is credited for singlehandedly moving the entire library system to a new location at the high school. After her retirement, Sr. Loretta joined her Sisters living at Wartburg. Sr. Loretta continues her ministry in health care, driving Sisters to their doctors appointments and helping Sisters with daily tasks and general health care needs.
Sr. Loretta practices mindfulness meditation, and enjoys reading, decorating and crafting; however, Sister’s favorite past time is spending time at the ocean.
Sr. Lenore Smith celebrates her 60th Jubilee this year! The second of three siblings, Sister hails from the Bronx, where she attended St. Helena Elementary School. Sister was introduced to the Divine Compassion Community when she attended Preston High School.
After one year at Molloy College, Sr. Lenore entered religious life, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Good Counsel College. Sister earned New York State Certification in elementary and special education, as well as two certifications from the College of New Rochelle in language and learning and reading.
Sr. Lenore’s life-long ministry in education spans 57 years. Currently, Sister is a Title One teacher at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Elmsford. She began her ministry in 1967 as an assistant kindergarten teacher at Good Counsel Elementary School for four years. Sister also taught first and second grades at Holy Name of Jesus School in Valhalla and St. Bernard’s in White Plains.
For over 40 years, Sr. Lenore was a second grade teacher at Good Counsel Elementary School, where she also prepared generations of second graders for the sacrament of First Holy Communion. During the same four decades, Sr. Lenore was the dedicated sacristan at the Chapel of the Divine Compassion, and the Assistant Director of the Education Center at the College of New Rochelle for 30 years. As an adjunct professor, Sister taught graduate students about children’s literature and methods and materials for engaging students with learning disabilities. Sr. Lenore helped create education programs for children, ensuring appropriate material was available at all times for professors and students.
From 2018 to 2020, Sr. Lenore volunteered at Maria Fareri Child Care Division, reading stories, doing crafts and playing board games with the children being treated at the hospital. The interaction gave them a chance to laugh and have fun during a difficult time.
Sister’s hobbies include photography, reading, listening to music and attending ballets. Sister enjoys word searches and creating albums and stationary from her photographs. Sr. Lenore loves spending time with family, friends and her Sisters, and is grateful for 60 wonderful years with them in Community.
We remember with love each of these women, our Sisters and friends, who died within the past year. We celebrate their lives and the example they offered to the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, their families, friends, students and the whole world. They each embraced the call to live compassionate lives. May they rest in the arms of the loving God they so faithfully served.
Sister Maria Teresa de Bourbon, RDC (Formerly Sr. Marie Jose)
September 16, 1935 – March 24, 2024
Sister Maria Teresa de Bourbon, RDC, (“MT”) a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion for over 60 years, died peacefully on March 24, 2024 at Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Born in Rome, Italy, the daughter of Fulco and Ana Vásquez de Bourbon, Sister was raised in Bogota, Colombia and New York, USA.
Sr. Maria Teresa earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish at Good Counsel College and a master’s degree in Spanish from Middlebury College. Sister returned to school in the mid-nineties, earning an MSW from Adelphi University in 1996.
Sr. Maria Teresa began her ministry in 1957 at Good Counsel Elementary School in White Plains. Her school-based ministries included Preston and Kennedy Catholic High Schools. At the same time, Sister pursued activities that matched her desire to use her Spanish language and cultural gifts working with marginalized people in the Bronx, Harlem, Pawling and White Plains. In 1984, Sister began her fulltime ministry in pastoral outreach, prison ministry and education among the Hispanic population in Newburgh, NY.
Sr. Maria Teresa’s life combined creativity and simplicity. Some of the sketches in her notebook became greeting cards, logos and more. Most notes and letters Sister sent had a freehand drawing of a particular detail she had seen in nature.
“Sr. Maria Teresa “walked the talk” in her work among poor people and rarely missed an opportunity to speak for those who could not find a “place at the table.” In that respect, Sr. Maria Teresa was a prophet among us,” Sr. Susan Becker, RDC Leadership Team, said.
Sister Deborah Flaherty, RDC (Formerly Sr. Mary Aloysius)
February 10, 1943 – August 13, 2023
Sister Deborah was born in Brooklyn, NY, to Michael and Helen (Culhane) Flaherty. Sister graduated from Immaculate Conception Elementary School, Cathedral High School and Good Counsel College, and earned a master’s degree in library science from Catholic University.
Sr. Deborah was a teacher at Good Counsel Elementary School, Our Lady of Sorrows School and St. Lawrence O’Toole School for many years. She was also the Librarian at Good Counsel High School and the College of White Plains/Pace University.
“Sr. Deborah was a woman of deep faith who, even throughout her long term illness, trusted wholly in God’s mercy. We shall cherish her memory, her great love of our RDC Community, and her willingness to serve wherever she was needed over the years,” Sr. Laura Donovan, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, said.
Sister Mary Kristin Donworth, RDC
June 29, 1947 – January 23, 2024
Sister Mary Kristin, the daughter of Thomas and Selina (Dolan) Donworth, was the eldest of ten siblings. Sister entered the Sisters of the Divine Compassion in 1965 and made her final vows in 1975. Sr. Kristin earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Good Counsel College, her master’s degree in elementary education from Fairfield University and a second master’s in education administration and supervision from Pace University. Sr. Kristin was certified as an American Montessori teacher, and received NYS Certification in elementary education.
The list of Sr. Kristin’s ministries over the years tells the story of a woman with a love for children, commitment to the marginalized, and a quiet spiritual life. Sister began her ministry in education as an elementary school teacher at several Archdiocesan schools, as well as Good Counsel Academy Elementary School, where Sister also served as an administrative intern and Director of Development. For the past 23 years, Sr. Kristin served the Sisters of the Divine Compassion in multiple administrative positions, and on Congregational Leadership Teams.
Sr. Kristin’s commitment to the poor and underserved led her to establish the Dannat Project and Rainbow Connection Summer Program for underserved children in White Plains. She served as the Director of Volunteers at S.H.O.R.E. and as a board member at St. Bernard’s Head Start. In addition, Sister worked for three years at Siena House. She wrote children’s books and published several educational articles and children’s plays in the Religion Teacher’s Journal and Momentum, the magazine for the National Catholic Education Association. Sr. Kristin has been recognized numerous times for her generous service in White Plains and the Bronx.
The hallmarks of Sr. Kristin’s life were love of family, fierce commitment to her ministries, and deep fidelity as a Sister of the Divine Compassion.
“Sr. Kristin’s quiet, unassuming presence and gift of being a great listener, endeared her to everyone,” Sr. Laura Donovan, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, said.
Sister Ann Kavanagh, RDC (Formerly Sr. Thomas Marie) May 20, 1939 - Jan. 31, 2024
Sister Ann was born in Elmhurst, NY to Charles and Catherine (O’Donnell) Kavanagh. Sister earned her bachelor’s degree in social studies education from Good Counsel College, a master’s degree in social studies education from CCNY, and was awarded a NYS Certificate in school administration.
Sr. Ann entered the Sisters of the Divine Compassion on September 8, 1961, and made her perpetual profession in 1969. Sister’s ministries over the years took her from St. Frances de Chantal School in the Bronx to Good Counsel Academy Elementary School in White Plains. For over 20 years, Sr. Ann was the principal at St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Croton Falls, NY Since 1995, Sr. Ann worked in Catholic elementary education in the dioceses of Metuchen and Newark in New Jersey.
Sr. Ann loved the children of her professional and personal life. As one of her nieces shared, “Ann was most at home up to her knees in children.” Early in her years in ministry, Sister changed her religious name from Sr. Thomas Marie to Sr. Ann, but perhaps her favorite reference was Aunt Ann, the beloved family elder whose presence at family gatherings meant unconditional love, acceptance and presents for the nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews of her loving and extensive Kavanagh family.
“Sr. Ann’s genuine love, real world humor, pride in her family and ministry in education all speak of her dedication to our mission of being God’s compassionate presence in the world,” Sr. Laura Donovan, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, said.
February 3, 1931 – April 24, 2023
Sister Celesta was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the daughter of Louis and Grace (Burke) Kelley. Sister’s early education was in Connecticut. Sister went on to study at Good Counsel College, earning a bachelor’s degree in earth science and Villanova University where she earned a master’s degree in science. Sr. Celesta also held NY Certifications in education.
Sr. Celesta began her life-long education ministry in elementary school before advancing to teach earth science at both Preston and John F. Kennedy High Schools. Sister traveled extensively to further her education and that of her students. Sr. Celeste had the unique opportunity to teach at three different colleges - Good Counsel, College of White Plains and Pace University - all in the same classroom! For 35 years, Sister never left a stone unturned as a geology professor, teaching generations of college students about rocks, the layers of the earth and all its components.
“Sr. Celesta was a loyal, organized, caring, and compassionate person. Her fidelity, kindness and wonderful sense of humor will ever be remembered by all who knew her,” Sr. Laura Donovan, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, said.
Sister Mary Lauren McLeod, RDC
March 27, 1946 – April 1, 2024
Sister Mary Lauren McLeod, RDC, (Patricia), a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion for nearly 59 years, died peacefully on April 1, 2024 at Cabrini of Westchester. Sister Lauren was born in Danbury, Connecticut on March 27, 1946, the daughter of Clarence and Evelyn McLeod. Sr. Lauren earned a bachelor’s degree in Education and English from Good Counsel College and a master’s degree in Education from Keene State College in New Hampshire. Sister Lauren’s fi rst assignment was St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Mahopac where she taught for 11 years. She then moved to the Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in White Plains where Lauren was a guidance director and taught high school English and Math for five years. Sr. Lauren returned to graduate school and earned a master’s in social work from Fordham University in 1986.
Sr. Lauren worked as a therapist at Catholic Charities White Plains from 1985 until it closed. To address the loss of a mental health agency that was fi nancially accessible to low and moderate income individuals, Sr. Lauren joined with her Sisters of the Divine Compassion to establish the RDC Center for Counseling and Human Development at the Sisters’ White Plains Campus.
Sr. Lauren served as the director of the “RDC Counseling Center” from 1987-2008, when she was elected to the RDC Congregational Leadership Team. Sister continued working as a therapist at the Center until her retirement in 2021. As part of her work for the Center, she travelled to elementary schools and worked with students each week.
“Lauren’s gift to her Sisters and friends, as well as her clients, was her unpretentious frankness, usually wrapped in humorous packaging. Lauren dared to put into words what many of the rest of us would only think. In a serious conversation, however, Sr. Lauren’s humor would take a step back and her tenderness and vulnerability would emerge. This made her a wonderful friend and therapist,” Sr. Susan Becker, RDC Leadership Team, said.
Sister Beatrice Orchie, RDC (Formerly Sr. Mary Daniel)
November 6, 1935 – Feb. 20, 2024
Sister Bea was born in Tarrytown, the daughter of Anthony and Beatrice (Masterson) Orchie. Sister entered the Divine Compassion Community on September 3, 1958, and professed her fi nal vows on April 14, 1966.
Sr. Bea earned her bachelor’s degree in history from Good Counsel College and a master’s degree in religion from Manhattan College. Sister also received NYS Certification in elementary education.
Sister Bea began her ministry in 1961 at St. Anthony’s School in White Plains. During her more than five decades of active ministry, Sister taught at several schools in New York, including St. Lawrence O’Toole School in Brewster, St. Joseph’s in Croton Falls, St. Mary’s in Katonah, Preston High School in the Bronx, the Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel Elementary and High Schools in White Plains and Our Lady of Solace in the Bronx.
Music was Sr. Bea’s gift both in and out of the classroom. She infused her teaching with it, taught it as a subject, and directed the Sisters’ singing group for several years. Under her enthusiastic direction, and with that smile of encouragement, Sister brought music out of the most tone-deaf among us.
“Sr. Bea was up for any challenge. The Sisters who lived with her at St. Mary’s in Katonah still tell tales of the wallpapering, paneling, and other DIY projects she was famous for – and good at - always with a sense of humor,” Sr. Laura Donovan, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, said.
