La Villa romana delle Grotte è una delle lussuose villae maritimae che costellavano tutte le isole dell’arcipelago toscano, costruite da nobili esponenti delle classi aristocratiche di Roma per il riposo e lo svago dagli impegni politici della capitale. L’edifi cio, ripartito su due livelli ed affacciato sullo splendido golfo di Portoferraio, venne costruito dai membri della potente casata dei Valerii alla fi ne del I secolo a.C.
The Le Grotte Roman villa is one of the luxurious villae maritimae which were dotted across all the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, built by members of the Roman aristocracy for rest and recreation, away from their political commitments in the capital. The building, on two levels and overlooking the magnifi cent gulf of Portoferraio, was built by members of the powerful Valerii family at the end of the 1st Century BCE.
