What indicates to you that fall is here? Dick MacKenzie

Sailboat I found a sailboat in the woods today, and although I searched the sides and the stern, I couldn’t find a name. I’ll bet years ago she was a beauty with a pretty name like Sarah, or Miss Bette. Maybe Girl From Ipanema. She lies in a pleasant place, hugged by young trees and bushes that have surrounded her, but miles from the nearest

water that would be more in touch with her lifestyle. I wondered what kind of lover would have jilted her and tossed her aside when she was no longer the sleek and healthy apple of his eye, to lie alone here among the stones and sand. In her own way, this old sailboat brought some joy to my heart as I admired her grace and

The trees leaves changing color. More sidewalk Dear Mr. Mayor and the Sidewalk workers, Last year a new sidewalk was built in

my neighbourhood by Tim Hortons. I like that it is smooth. I don’t like that it just goes into the gravel. I also

don’t like that there’s a big bump (curb) at the end. My family and I would like the town

Spirit Walks The Sioux Lookout Genealogy Club is pleased to be able to have honoured the pioneer men of Sioux Lookout who fought in World War 1 which began 100 years ago. We would like to thank the families and John Cole Jr. of the Legion who helped us with putting the whole experience together. Our goal was to educate ourselves and others on that significant history and the Canadian part in it. We were not able to present everyone’s story, so we recognize that there are many that are yet to be told. We welcome suggestions and certainly are pleased to have help with them. Please contact Vera at 737-2321 or Donna at 737-3303. William Garfield Carson (prepared by granddaughters Nancy Hemphill and Bev Carson) William Garfield Carson was born July 12, 1897 in Kenora (then known as Rat Portage) Ontario to James and Hannah (nee

Frost) Carson. He was the youngest of seven children. Brother’s John Jack, Samuel John, sisters Mary Hannah May, Martha Jane, Mary Elizabeth, Minnie Agnes and adopted sister Mary Telford. Little is known of the Carson family as not very much was shared.

On January 1,1916, William Carson signed on to the 94th Overseas Battalion. At that time he was a brakeman with SPR. He was listed as being 5’8” with hazel eyes and brown hair. He was very lucky to have survived his service. He arrived in England on the SS

to fix the sidewalk by making a ramp onto the road (Tim Horton’s entrance) and making more

sidewalk to go the ramp. Thank you, Caden Culham, age 4 ½

Olympic in July of 1916 “Taken on Strength” as he had contracted the mumps. After about two weeks he was released for duty, only to be shot in the upper right leg. In May of 1917 he was again released to service, only to be shot yet again in January of 1918. From his own story, the bullet entered between the collar bone and exited at the back of his chest. It is understood that he was transported to Winnipeg hospital for rehabilitation. In the meantime a notice was received and reported in the local paper that he had died from this gunshot to the chest. He survived this second assault and was given

an honourable discharge on January 29th, 1919. He received the British War Medal as well as the Victory Medal. On Oct 19, 1927, William married Wilhelmina Carrier (Courier) of Port Arthur Ontario. Together they had six children Alice Evelyn, Andrea Eloise, Theresa (Terry), William (Cubby), Jenine (Geneen) ,and Garfield Frederick. In 1949 he is listed as a Trainman (with CPR) living at 91 Prince St, in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. He passed away on August 22,1951. Some of his grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren still live in Sioux Lookout today (Korobanik and Carson families).

Seas Expeditionary Force in May of 1915 in Winnipeg. He served with the Fort Garry Horse Regiment and the Royal Canadian Dragoons in France and Belgium. He was discharged in 1919 and he married Sadie Chalmers in Belfast. They returned to Canada on a troop ship. Shortly after, John was transferred to Sioux Lookout. The peace and beauty of Sioux Lookout captivated them after the strain of war-torn Europe. They bought

a home on Wellington Street and lived in the company of other Irish and British immigrants. Life in Sioux Lookout for these pioneers was difficult. Front Street was the only road. Fifth Street was a corduroy road which ran from the train tracks to the lake. You can still see the imprint of the road in the spring. There were no electric lights or running water. John had a well dug on his lot and it served thirty other homes. Until then people carried water

from the CN roundhouse for their use. John and Sadie had six sons. Four of the boys - Alfred, Alex, Brian and Jack - served in the RCAF. Only Brian and Jack returned from the war. Brian was interred for some time in a prisoner of war camp in Germany. Jim was mentally handicapped and lived with his mother his whole life. He was well known and well liked in the community and often did errands and odd jobs for those he knew.

Terry was the youngest son and he worked for the CNR. The family recounted an incident with Dr. Mitchell, who visited Sadie when she was pregnant. Little did he know that Sadie’s husband, John was a soldier he had saved during the war. When he realized this he ran to the roundhouse to greet John. The families became great friends after that. John and Sadie’s descendants still live in Sioux Lookout.

My indication that fall has arrived is that it’s getting colder and more leaves fall.
