Blueberry Festival gets underway
I
Tim Brody Associate Editor
TS Blueberry Festival time again in Sioux Lookout! The community’s long running 10 day festival celebrates a major milestone this year, its 35th anniversary. Regularly boasting more than 100 events, the annual festival draws visitors to the community from across the country, the United States, and some places even farther abroad. Festival time has become a time for family gatherings in town. “The purpose of the festival is to celebrate the community of Sioux Lookout, to be accessible to all, and to incorporate something of interest for everyone. It is a medium for promoting the community as a visitor destination as well as a focus

Jesse Terry paddling Albany River in great adventure
J
Tim Brody Associate Editor
ESSE Terry, lifelong Sioux Lookout resident, has embarked upon another great undertaking. When he was 16 years old Terry scaled Canadian’s highest peak, Mount Logan. In 2013 he competed in The Hudson Bay Quest Dog Sled Race, a 330 kilometre trek from Gillam to Churchill, Manitoba. Terry’s latest adventure is a solo paddle on the Albany River. Terry began his odyssey of over 800 kilometres on July 25 from Osnaburgh Lake, just south of Mishkeegogamang
First Nation. More than 200 kilometres into his paddle, Terry explained from Eabmetoong / Fort Hope First Nation, where he had cell phone service, paddling the Albany River is something he’s wanted to do since he was a teenager. “The time was, and is, right now,” he said. “So I wanted to get it done while I can.” Terry has been travelling approximately 45 kilometres a day. “I’ll finish at the Arctic Ocean, on James Bay, at the community of Fort Albany,” he informed. Asked about his trip, he shared, “The most rewarding
part has been portaging my gear (three loads) over the long portages, just after clearing them (cutting and removing fallen trees) with my power saw. “The most challenging part has been the time away from my children, and eating enough food. I’m working very hard, with long days and getting enough calories in me has been a challenge. He added, “The nice thing about canoe trips, as opposed to backpacking, is that I’m never carrying everything at once. So I’m carrying lots of extra food and things to keep me comfortable for See THE TRIP on page 2

I’m stoked and excited for the next leg of the journey too... lots of spectacular scenery along the way, beautiful views, powerful waterfalls, abundant wildlife, amazing clouds, beautiful sunsets/sunrises.” Part of his gear includes a satellite phone and a SPOT device. He described the SPOT device on his Facebook page. “The device lets me send the same pre-loaded message. Therefore, I cannot change the
message every day. Rather the message stays the same but my location changes. Also, I cannot read or comment once I leave the Internet in a community. This device also lets me send an emergency signal to call for help if needed.” The message his SPOT device sends out is, “All good paddling down the Albany River! Ohh Ya!” “I will continue to send SPOT messages every night with a link to my location for those interested,” he shared. Equay-Wuk among three Family Information Liaison Units in Ontario
I
Tyllore Martelle Staff Writer
N September 2016 the government of Canada launched the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). The MMIWG inquiry is completely independent from all provincial and territorial governments. It was formed in response to calls for action made by Indigenous families. The MMIWG is comprised of five different commissions across the country that work together to examine and report on the systemic causes of violence against Indigenous women and girls in Canada. More recently, four units known as Family Information Liaison Units (FILU) were set up across the province. FILUs are intended to provide families access to information from various government organizations about the loss of their loved ones. The FILUs also assist families with their traumas in a culturally safe, accepting, respectful, and nonjudgmental manner. Overseen by the unit in Toronto, there are additional FILUs in Sudbury, Thunder Bay, and Sioux Lookout. Equay-Wuk Women’s Group is the Sioux Lookout contact for the local unit. EquayWuk’s mandate is to empower Indigenous women, children, and families that live in Sioux Lookout. With outreach to 31 First Nation communities in Northwestern Ontario, Equay-Wuk is available to over 18,000 people. FILUs serve the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in several ways. Some duties they are committed to involve gathering case-specific information from police investigations, court proceedings, and other government processes such as coroner’s investigations or reports. The FILU relays
this information to families truthfully and confidentially. They also connect families with Indigenous Elders, knowledge keepers, healers, as well as offering trauma counselling and other support. In addition, the FILUs can collaborate
with similar units in different territories and provinces in order to gather more information about a family’s case. The FILU employees are members of Indigenous communities and are equipped with years of front line experience in order to
provide families with the greatest amount of information. They are specifically trained to cater to the unique needs of a family whose loved one was subjected to violence. Families can access the FILU services regardless of whether or not they’re
a participant with MMIWG. The FILU’s team lead, Terry Swan, is available to be contacted in the event a family is not within accessible
distance to one of the field offices. A family can call the toll free number 1-844-888-8610 to arrange for FILU workers to travel to their location.
The local FILU family liaison worker is Shauna Pitawanakwat, who can be reached at the Equay-Wuk building at 16 Fourth Avenue N, by phone at 737-4877, or by email at shauna.pitawanakwat@ontario.ca.

Federal funding to end boil water advisory in Neskantaga First Nation Tim Brody Associate Editor
T
HE Government of Canada is investing $8.8 million in Neskantaga First Nation to help end the community’s
long standing boil water advisory. Kenora MP Bob Nault made the announcement on July 31, on behalf of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett.
“Neskantaga First Nation’s boil water advisory (BWA) represents the longest standing advisory in Canada,” Nault informed. The funding announced will be
used to upgrade the community’s water treatment system. “For 22 years residents of Neskantaga First Nation have had to worry about the water they bathe in and the water
they drink. The project, which is expected to be completed in spring 2018, will finally alleviate this stress. The project is part of Canada’s $1.8 billion commitment to improve
infrastructure and strengthen Indigenous communities, and while it is a big step for Canada, it is truly monumental for the residents of Neskantaga First Nation,” Nault concluded.

Cat Lake receives Jays Care Foundation donation Tyllore Martelle Staff Writer
C
AT Lake First Nation was first established as a trading post in the early 1700s and was later established as a reserve in 1970. The population of Cat Lake sits at 600 and is surrounded by the bodies of water that flow into five major Ontario rivers. This summer a Cat Lake athlete attended the North American Indigenous Games
in Toronto. Lance Oombash, a 16 year old baseball player attended the games. In a short film broadcast by SportsNet, it was revealed that the game of baseball is very popular on the reserve. Games of baseball are said to often take place from early in the morning until the evening. Currently the Cat Lake baseball field is filled with holes, bumps, and weeds, but the players don’t let that stop them.
Joyce Wesley-Peters, a community mentor commented positively on Oombash’s baseball skills. “Lance has so much talent when you see him on the field.” Wesley-Peters also accompanied Oombash on the 27 hour trip to Toronto for the games. Cat Lake Chief Ernie Wesley said, “It’s made me so proud as a Chief of this First Nation,” regarding Oombash’s attendance at the games. Baseball has given
Oombash something to strive toward for his future. Unfortunately, early in the games, Oombash suffered a hip injury that kept him from playing. The Jays Care Foundation recently donated $150,000 to Cat Lake through their Field of Dreams program for the construction of a new ball field. The Jays Care Foundation is set up to increase skills, available resources, improve infrastructure,
increase the number of high quality programs, increase the number of accessible play spaces, enhance life skills, increase the level of physical activity, and increase abilities to use life skills
and change lives. The Field of Dreams program provides funding to enhance and build safe spaces for children to play baseball, develop life skills, and learn from positive role models.
The construction of the new ball field in Cat Lake is set to begin next summer. Rogers created a short video on Oombash’s journey to the games as well as a summary of baseball in Cat Lake. To view the video, follow the link to http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/ mlb/lance-oombash-overcame-rough-start-baseballrepresentative-cat-lake/.
