John David Friend is a 2000 graduate of Garrard County High School. After college at Eastern Kentucky University, he gave school teaching a try before finding his true calling--being a funeral director. His father, Johnny Dale Friend, was a longtime pastor of churches, including Pond Baptist Church in Waynesburg, and John David continues the ministry work of his father through the funeral business.

Mary Benton Friend has roots in Lincoln County, but she was born in Quantico, Virginia where her father was stationed with the United States Marines. She graduated high school in Virginia about the time that her father retired, and her parents moved back to Lincoln County.

She then attended college at Western Kentucky University where she received a degree in Hospital Administration.

Sadly, her parents Bobbie Sue and Clark Benton died in the crash of Comair Flight 5191 at Lexington’s Bluegrass Field in 2006.

John David and Mary met in 2008, and within a few months were married. Four years later, they decided to become funeral home owners when they purchased Fox Funeral Home in Stanford and Barnett, Demrow Funeral Home in Waynesburg from a Texas company that had owned the funeral homes since 1998.

Mary’s uncle, Bill Demrow, was one of the owners that sold the business in 1998, but Mary was never involved in the funeral home business with her uncle. She and John David are first generation owners, which seems to be unusual these days. Usually, a small-town funeral home spans several generations of the same family, and that happened for two generations with Dan Barnett following his father Clarence Barnett in the Waynesburg home, but that has never really been the case for the Stanford location.

The roots of Fox & Friend Funeral Home can be traced to Joseph Caldwell “J.C.” McClary, who started about 1889 as a salesman and embalmer for B.K. Wearen’s Furniture and Undertaking business in Stanford. By 1896, McClary was in the Undertaking business by himself.

When John A. Ball passed his state embalmer’s exam in 1914, he had been employed by J.C. McClary for several years in the undertaking business.

Sometime after 1917 but before 1926, John Ball took over the undertaking business by himself, and J.C. McClary spent his time as a minister until his death in 1928.

In 1929, William Gilbert “Gip” Morgan purchased a half interest in J.A. Ball & Company, and the company name was changed to Ball & Morgan. They operated out of a store front on Main Street in Stanford, which was their office and show room for caskets. All funerals were held in homes, churches, or at the graveside at that time.

In 1939, they purchased the 1870-built former Female College building and remodeled it giving Stanford its first funeral parlor. That is, for the first time in Stanford’s history, there was a place other than a church or a home to hold visitations and funerals.

Strawberry Cheese Cake QUICK AND EASY RECIPE Courtesy of Food Network Magazine

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups pecans

Baking Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spread the pecans on a

1 1/4 cups superfine sugar

baking sheet; bake until toasted, 6 to 8 minutes. Let cool, then

transfer to a food processor. Add 1/4 cup sugar and pulse until

beginning to brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside.

2. Put 1 cup of water in a baking dish and place in the lower third of the oven. This will create a sauna effect for your cheesecake to bake in.

3. Beat the cream cheese with a stand mixer until smooth. Add the remaining 1 cup sugar and mix until just combined, 2 to 3 minutes (don't overmix). Using a rubber spatula, scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the eggs, one at a time, scraping the bowl after each addition. Add the vanilla and 3 teaspoons rose water and mix until smooth, about 1 minute. Pour into the crust. Place on the middle oven rack (above the water bath) and bake until the center is just set but still jiggles, about 35 minutes. Turn off the oven; let the cheesecake cool with the oven door cracked, 1 hour. Remove from the oven, cover and refrigerate until cool, about 4 hours.

4. Meanwhile, combine the strawberries, honey, lemon juice and the remaining 1 teaspoon rose water in a bowl. Cover and set aside while the cheesecake cools.

5. Slice the cheesecake; top with the strawberries. Eat while cheering on your favorite horse!

Ingredients: 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted softened butter, plus extra for buttering molds 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped

Baking Instructions: 1. Butter and lightly flour 6 (6-ounce) ramekins. Tap out any excess flour.

2. In a small saucepan, bring to a boil 2 inches of

Allow to cool slightly.

3. In a large bowl, add eggs, yolks, and sugar. Using an electric mixer, beat until light and fluffy and pale in color. Reduce speed to medium-low and slowly pour in the chocolate mixture. Add the flour and mix until just combined. Do not overwork the batter.

4. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. 5. Divide the batter between the molds. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place chocolate molds onto baking sheet and place in oven for 7 minutes. If not baking immediately, cover chocolate molds with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve, up to 8 hours.

When ready to bake, place refrigerated chocolate molds onto baking sheet and place in oven for 10 minutes. The top and sides should be cooked and dry and the inside will be runny.

6. Using oven mitts, carefully invert each mold onto a plate and let it sit for 10 seconds. Then lift 1 corner of the ramekin and the cake should slip out. Sprinkle about 1/2 teaspoon Frangelico over each cake. Spoon berries around the chocolate cake and garnish with mint. Serve warm.

Jingle Bell Bundt Cake Ingredients: 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for the pan 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 3/4 cup almond flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar 4 large eggs, at room temperature 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon pure almond extract 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk For the glaze: 2 cups confectioners' sugar 2 to 3 tablespoons milk Pomegranate seeds and chopped toasted almonds, for topping

Baking Instructions: 1. Make the cake: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Brush a 10- to 12-cup Bundt pan with olive oil; dust with flour and tap out the excess. Whisk the all-purpose flour, almond flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl; set aside.

2. Combine the granulated sugar and eggs in a large bowl; beat with a mixer on medium-high speed until thick and pale yellow, about 3 minutes. Reduce the mixer speed to medium and slowly beat in the olive oil until the batter is smooth. Beat in the vanilla and almond extracts. Reduce the mixer speed to low; beat in the flour mixture in two additions, alternating with the almond milk, until just combined.

3. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out with a few moist crumbs, 50 to 60 minutes. Transfer to a rack and let cool 15 minutes in the pan. Loosen with an offset spatula, then invert onto the rack to cool completely.

4. Make the glaze: Whisk the confectioners' sugar and 2 tablespoons milk in a bowl until smooth; stir in the remaining 1 tablespoon milk if the glaze is too thick. Spoon the glaze over the cake, letting it drip down the sides.

Sprinkle with pomegranate seeds and chopped almonds.

Let the glaze set, about 20 minutes.

Coconut Cake Ingredients: 3/4 pound (3 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature, plus more for greasing the pans 2 cups sugar 5 extra-large eggs, at room temperature 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1 1/2 teaspoons pure almond extract 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting the pans 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1 cup milk 4 ounces sweetened shredded coconut For the frosting: 1 pound cream cheese, at room temperature 1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature 3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon pure almond extract 1 pound confectioners' sugar, sifted 6 ounces sweetened shredded coconut

Baking Instructions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 2 (9inch) round cake pans, then line them parchment paper. Grease them again and dust lightly with flour.

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar on medium-high speed for 3 to 5 minutes, until light yellow and fluffy. Crack the eggs into a small bowl.

With the mixer on medium speed, add the eggs 1 at a time, scraping down the bowl once during mixing.

Add the vanilla and almond extracts and mix well.

The mixture might look curdled; don't be concerned.

In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the dry ingredients and the milk to the batter in 3 parts, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Fold in the 4 ounces of coconut with a rubber spatula.

Pour the batter evenly into the 2 pans and smooth the top with a knife. Bake in the center of the oven for 45 to 55 minutes, until the tops are browned and a cake tester comes out clean. Cool on a baking rack for 30 minutes, then turn the cakes out onto a baking rack to finish cooling.

For the frosting, in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine the cream cheese, butter, vanilla and almond extract on low speed. Add the confectioners' sugar and mix until just smooth (don't whip!).

To assemble, place 1 layer on a flat serving plate, top side down, and spread with frosting. Place the second layer on top, top side up, and frost the top and sides. To decorate the cake, sprinkle the top with coconut and lightly press more coconut onto the sides. Serve at room temperature.

From the Rex Ramsey Files “The Regretful Poker Game” EDITOR’S NOTE: THE FOLLOWING IS HISTORICAL FICTION FROM LOCAL HISTORIAN, JONATHAN L SMITH, USING ACTUAL FACTS AND REAL PEOPLE FROM A REAL-LIFE 1893 CRIME STORY. THE CONVERSATIONS AND THE REPORTER, REX RAMSEY, ARE MADE UP. THE REST IS REAL.

“I’m in that game for five dollars,” James Wickersham said as he and Mack Ferrell entered the room.

The room was Room #25 at the Coffey House Hotel on the corner of Main Street and Somerset Pike in Stanford. The day was May 8, 1893.A Monday.

The hotel is operated by the very reputable Joe Coffey, and it is highly unlikely that Mr. Coffey knew the man who rented the room was hosting a card game there.

Originally opened in 1878 as the St. Asaph Hotel, it had most recently been the Portman House before Mr. Coffey took his turn as the hotelier.

I like Joe Coffey, his missus, and the hotel they run, but I prefer my accommodations a block away at the Myers House. My one room has turned into a very comfortable suite over the years.

When Wickersham made his comment about the game, Mack Ferrell offered, “I’ll go halvers with you, Wick.”

Samuel Englman, known as “Long Sam” remarked, to no one in particular, “There’s no halvers in this game. That’d make you partners and that’s not right.”

Even though Long Sam did not direct his words to Ferrell, Ferrell took it that way, and his harsh words not fit to be printed flew around the room in Long Sam’s direction.

John Bright, who was seated next to Long Sam, said, “He can’t bulldoze you when I’m here, Unc,’ and reached into his pocket and pulled out a pistol that he set on the table.

Long Sam wasn’t looking for a fight, just a fair game.

He told Bright, “I don’t want that, put it away.”

That’s when Ferrell came around the table, put his right hand on Bright’s pistol, and with his own pistol in his left hand sent a shot into Long Sam. The ball entered just below Long Sam’s right temple, ranged downward, penetrated the skull in the rear of the head about three inches from the left ear, and lodged just under the skin.

Long Sam lived about twenty-five minutes after the shot, but without suffering, as he was totally unconscious before passing away.

He was four days away from his 46th birthday and was the likeable, witty, life of the party type of fella who left behind a wife and son. In fact, his twentyone-year-old son, Eph, was in the room and saw his father murdered.

As soon as Long Sam fell, those in the room panicked and ran into the street, including Mack Ferrell, with two pistols in his hands and one on his person.

That’s when I first heard about this matter. I was sitting in the saloon at the Myers house, having my nightly spirits when Mack Ferrell burst through the door and ran to his brother, Tom Ferrell, the bartender.

Mack regurgitated the facts to Tom, but with the embellishment that Sam Engleman had pulled a pistol on him. He asked Tom what to do.

Tom looked at me and knowing that John Robert Ramsey, known as “Rex” for the train wrecks I had covered, would report every word of this exchange in the next issue of the newspaper, gave his brother the only sensible advice he could.

Community Spotlight John Ball retired from the business in 1947, and Gip Morgan became the sole owner changing the name to Morgan Funeral Home, and in 1949 Billy H. Fox started working in the business.

In 1961, Bill Fox became a part owner, and the name was changed to Morgan and Fox Funeral Home. In 1965, Fox became the sole owner, but the name would not be changed to Fox Funeral Home until 1984, after Gip Morgan’s 1983 death.

In 1985, Bill Fox sold the funeral home to Bill Demrow, Dan Barnett, and Scottie Ernst, and they would operate the home as a sister business to Barnett, Demrow Funeral Home in Waynesburg.

In 1998, they sold both funeral homes to Carriage Services, Inc., a publicly traded company, for what was rumored to be a substantial amount of Wall Street money.

In 2012, John David and Mary Friend purchased the two funeral homes from Carriage Services (for a rumored Main Street price), and in 2015 they changed the home’s names, adding their last name. Their marketing slogan, “Your Friends in funeral service” is a cleaver turn of words but is also true in both meanings.

They provide the same type of kind, dignified, and yes, Friend-ly, funeral services that generations of Lincoln Countians have come to expect from both Ball/Morgan/Fox funeral home and Barnett, Demrow funeral home.

A funeral home is an important business in any town, but especially in a small town. John Davd and Mary are being great stewards of these legacy funeral homes and they’re continuing an important service to our county.

Author’s Note: The two funeral homes now owned by the Friends, had been connected even prior to the purchase of Fox Funeral Home by Bill Demrow and Dan Barnett. Did you know that Clarence Barnett started in the funeral business at Morgan Funeral Home?

He then went into a partnership with James “J.M.” Renolds at Waynesburg, who had been in business there for many years. Their new 1952 partnership was called Reynolds & Barnett Funeral Home.

The Friend Family When Mr. Reynolds retired in 1953, he sold his half interest to Gip Morgan and the home became Reynolds, Morgan & Barnett. In 1961, Gip Morgan sold his half and Clarence Barnett became the sole owner of the home, with both Bill Demrow and Clarence’s son Dan joining him in 1980. The other connection is that John Ball and James Reynolds were brothers-in-law, Reynolds having married Ball’s sister Georgia.

As Santa prepares for another journey around the globe, he reads letters from the children with their special requests. ‘Peace on Earth’ reads one, ‘May no one go hungry’ says another. ‘No more war’ reads a third. In fact, all the letters this year weren’t about toys or money or material things – Love and kindness were all the children wanted. Ingredients: 1/2 pound butter 1 c sugar 1 T cardamon Ingredients: CREAM TOGETHER 1 stick of butter 1 large egg 3/4 cup sugar ADD 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon of salt 1 ½ cup flour Put ½ of the mixture in greased 8 x 8 pan.

Baking Instructions:

2023: Stanford focuses on growth, safety for citizens

It has been a big year for the City of Stanford. Mayor Dalton Miller said the city has undertaken numerous infrastructure projects, welcomed new businesses and taken measures to further ensure the safety of all residents.

So far, in 2023 Atmos Energy has replaced 12,074 feet of main gas lines in Stanford.

Miller said he knows the project has been an inconvenience to citizens and he appreciates everyone’s patience.

“The safety of residents is what it’s all about,” Miller said.

“They’re currently working on replacing 5,332 more feet of main line.”

There is also an ongoing sewer project in Stanford that is updating aged sewer lines for better working systems in the future and safer drinking water for city residents.

“That’s a $1.3 million-dollar project that will replace sewer lines that will prevent infiltration of groundwater into the sewer lines and from the sewer leaching into the ground,” Miller said.

The project will help protect the groundwater and streams and will provide a better service to residents. A lot of the project is funded with grant money, Miller added, with a second phase expected soon.

Protecting the children of not only Stanford, but all Lincoln County, was also a priority in 2023.

“Our School Resource Officer contract with the schools has allowed us to put a police officer at every school every day for the safety of our children,” Miller said.

Miller said the numerous upgrades and projects in town aim to protect Stanford residents, while providing better services.

The Stanford Fire Department is now providing more response and coverage than ever before, Miller said.

“So we’re able to provide a service of medical response and fire service to the community at no cost,” he said. “There is no tax for them to have a fire service, that is all embedded into our current taxing system.”

Portman Avenue, with plans to build a new facility. The VOA Freedom House program treats mothers with substance use disorder, promotes the birth of healthy babies and works to reunite families.

“If we can save one baby from being addicted to drugs, it will be worth it all,” Miller said.

The Mayor says he foresees a lot of growth for Stanford in the next five years.

“I’m glad I’m going to be a part of that,” he said. “I think we’ve stayed still long enough and we’ve watched everybody pass us by. It’s time for us to start marketing ourselves and being able to shop locally here in our own town and not drive somewhere else to eat, and not drive somewhere else to buy what we need.”

The city is continually looking for new businesses to locate in Stanford.

“We just got a grant for $590,000 to work on the Industrial Park to make Build Ready sites,” Miller said.

Affordable housing will also be a major focus for Stanford in the near future, which will continue to promote the safety of citizens.

“We are in the Top Ten Safest Cities in Kentucky,” Miller said. “That’s accredited to all city employees and citizens. I can’t brag enough on everybody.”

Miller said the Stanford City Council is always looking toward the future and always has a five-year plan in place to grow the city and its services.

“I have a very understanding City Council that has my vision of the growth of Stanford and I just can’t thank the council enough for being willing and able to help work through all of this,” Miller said.

“It’s so nice to be able to sit down and actually discuss stuff that’s to the betterment of the community.”

None of it would be possible without the continued support and collaboration with Lincoln County, Miller said.

“The Judge Executive and the Magistrates are very open to a lot of things the city is doing and the county road department is extremely helpful to the city,” he said. “Everybody is just working well together in order to accomplish one goal and that is to make life better for all citizens of Stanford and Lincoln County.”

That landed Mack in the Lincoln County jail that night with an examining hearing later that week. My first story was in the second edition of the newspaper the day after the murder.

At the examination, he was held without bail for the murder of Sam Engleman.

The usual esteemed bar of Lincoln County turned out on both sides, with heavyweights W.G. Welch, T.P. Hill, W.H. Miller, and P.M. McRoberts representing Ferrell.

The equally talented J.B. Paxton, R.J. Breckinridge, and R.C. Warren represented the prosecution.

About six weeks after the murder, the trial was held with the aforedescribed ablest of legal counsel on both sides making their cases.

Afterwards, it took a jury of twelve good Lincoln County men only thirty minutes to reach a verdict.

Mack Ferrell’s ruddy complexion turned ashen when they announced the sentence of a lifetime at hard labor in the state penitentiary.

That would have ended his sentence in 1903, but in 1901, he was even luckier when he was pardoned outright by Governor John Beckham, freeing him after eight years in prison.

He did not stay in Kentucky, moving to Baltimore, Maryland where he married a woman from there, and he worked as a salesman under his first name Edward, never using his middle name Mack, probably because Edward M. Ferrell was a family man and salesman in Baltimore, but Mack Ferrell was a cold-blooded killer from Kentucky.

Interestingly, Mack’s son Thomas R. Ferrell, who was born in 1915, grew up to become a Maryland state policeman.

Long Sam’s son, Eph, who witnessed his father’s murder, was married with a daughter and son living in Arizona within seven years of his father’s untimely death. Eph died in Merced, California in 1945. His son Samuel J. Engleman, named for Long Sam, was born in 1895, about 2 ½ years after Long Sam’s death, and lived his life out west, dying in Las Vegas in 1967 at the age of 72.

After the appeals were exhausted in October, Sheriff J.N. Menefee took Ferrell to the state pen in Frankfort.

When my boss, Editor Walton, visited Frankfort a few years after this with some other important people, he met with Mack Ferrell during a tour of the prison.

Mack was a model prisoner and was pulling his “hard labor” not by breaking rocks, but in the infirmary, helping dispense medicine.

He is just a young man in his early twenties, looking at the rest of his life behind the prison walls in Frankfort because of a fatally bad decision on a May night at a poker game in Stanford. A most regretful poker game.

Postscript: Luckily for Mack Ferrell, his sentence was commuted from life to ten years by Lieutenant Governor William J. Worthing, who was acting as Governor in the absence of Governor William Bradley.

The City of Hustonville is excited to welcome a brand new Police Chief to town.

Mayor Timothy Smith said the city has hired Michael Leeroy Hardin to be the new Hustonville Police Chief.

Hardin is a two-term former Boyle County Sheriff and is coming out of retirement to become Hustonville’s top cop.

Hardin lives in Junction City and has family in Lincoln County, Smith said.

“He’s got a lot of roots in the area,” he said. “We’re pretty excited to have some real, deep-rooted leadership.”

Smith said to be voted for two terms to be the Boyle County Sheriff speaks a lot of Hardin and his ability to work effectively in communities.

“He’s going to help develop a good community structure,” Smith said. “He has a very hands on approach. He likes to communicate with people.”

Hardin has already been in communication with the School Resource Officer at Hustonville Elementary, Smith added.

“They’re going to look at ways to re-route traffic together,” he said. “Right now they park on Danville Pike, all the parents who pick up, and it’s kind of a corn maze trying to get through there with your vehicle if you’re not part of that line up. So they’re going to work on that.”

Smith said the City of Hustonville’s budget has been outstanding for 2023.

“I don’t know if it was done before, but we had a great budget planning period and we had special meetings in June and July and we are on course to have a stellar budget this year,” Smith said. “We’re staying within the lines.”

Christmas will be celebrated in Hustonville on Dec. 2 with a variety of holiday events. A Christmas bizarre event, full of vendors, will kick off the season in Hustonville from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

From 4 to 6 p.m. Santa Claus will make an appearance and give parents an opportunity to take photos with their kids and family members.

Then Santa will make an appearance in the Hustonville Christmas Parade which will start at 6 p.m. The parade lineup will start at the Elementary school and travel from College Street to Danville Pike, left onto Main Street and will end at the Fire Department.

Prizes will be given to the best parade theme, best decorated vehicle, best decorated float and best community spirit.

The community will host an annual Tree Lighting at 6:30 p.m. and hand out stockings to all the kids.

It won’t be long until Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and their elf helpers will make their way through Crab Orchard to greet all the little girls and boys for the Christmas season.

Every Christmas holiday, the City of Crab Orchard hosts a Christmas celebration during which children in the community gather at City Hall to receive presents and pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

This year’s Christmas event will be held Dec. 16 starting at 6 p.m. Children will receive toys, candy and hot chocolate.

Crab Orchard Mayor Jesse Harris is rounding out his first year as mayor and says it's been an enjoyable and exciting year for the city.

“I’ve really enjoyed it so far,” Harris said. “I think we’re getting a few things going. We got our gas pipeline that’s coming through Crab Orchard now. We got our stage built where we can have events here in Crab Orchard. Of course, we had the wet/dry vote and it went wet so we’re looking to do some annexing in Crab Orchard.”

During the Nov. 7 General Election, the citizens of Crab Orchard passed a wet vote to allow the sale of alcohol within city limits. There were 106 ‘yes’ votes and ‘84’ no votes.

Harris said the city is aiming to annex Cedar Creek Lake and the William Whitley House in the future which will provide new revenues for the city.

“We have a new Family Dollar/Dollar Tree that’s just opened up in Crab Orchard. So we’ve got a few things going. I’ve been excited about it,” Harris said. “We’re working on it and hope things turn out for the best. I think they will.”

Harris said he’s looking forward to this year’s Christmas event. Each year the city tries to make the event even bigger, he said.

“Hopefully we can make it a little larger than we usually have. We really work hard to get all the kids gifts,” he said.

The event helps to make sure no child in Crab Orchard goes without a Christmas present from Santa Claus.

Harris said the city is also already looking towards the spring and hoping to open up a softball and baseball field for kids, as well as create a local men’s softball league.

“We’re excited about what’s going on in Crab Orchard,” Harris said.

The Crab Orchard City Commission meets on the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. for its regular monthly meeting and the third Tuesday of every month at 9 a.m. for the monthly working session.

It’s the most WONDERFUL time of year!

The holiday season is finally upon us! For many, this season is filled with family gatherings and fun, while others look at it as a period to prepare for a fresh start in the new year. Personally, I always run out and pick up a new journal, start on page one, and start making my to-do lists and wants for the upcoming year. No matter what your plans are this holiday season, there is plenty to see and enjoy in Lincoln County. Make sure to shop at local businesses, first.

Christmas.. Some of my favorite things that come to mind are cozy fireplaces, fuzzy socks, filing out Christmas cards and rushing them to the post office, warm hugs, cinnamon, twinkling lights, and of course Christmas music! Yes, it is the most wonderful time of year!

Gathering with friends and family to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Make it a priority to call your family and friends and let them know that you are thinking about them.

Who Doesn’t Love a Parade?

Downtown Stanford is a beautiful place for a parade and the Christmas Parade held each year is a magnificent one. Parades in Lincoln County are common these days but not so much in the olden days (unless you count the pre-settlement buffalo herds that paraded down what’s now Main Street).

The first parades in our county started as early as 1873 and were from the traveling shows that came to town by train. They unloaded their animals and performing acts, then paraded them through town to the show site. Can you imagine a hippopotamus or tiger being paraded through downtown Stanford?

The first parade made up entirely of local people was probably the 4th of July parade in 1900, and a big parade was held for Stanford’s Sesi-centennial Celebration in 1936. Later, Stanford High School would have football Homecoming parades through town. Those were all warm weather parades, though, held in the summer or early fall.

The first winter parade was the 1978 Snow Queen parade, presented by the Stanford-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce. The Snow Queen pageant featured twenty-three girls from Lincoln County High School, who were paraded in cars. The winner was Missy Luttrell, first runner-up was Kim Wilcher, and second runner-up was Janie Hastie.

Stanford police chief Swannie McKinney led that first Snow Queen parade in his cruiser, followed by County Judge-Execuitve Earl Butcher, and Stanford Mayor Adam Pence. Also participating was the LCHS marching band, some antique cars, and Santa Claus.

The Christmas Parade has grown through the years and now includes younger girl categories, too, like Snow Princess and Snow Duchess.

In fact, it such a nice parade that a television movie was made about it last year.

The 2023 Snow Queen parade was held just after we went to print.
