Y'all sure know how to make a girl feel like she's doing a good job! The response for the magazine has been tremendous, and I am SO thankful for you! Thanks for being excited and telling your friends about it, and for reading it!
The thing about Summer is that it reminds us that beauty is always on the way. No matter how we feel or what we are going through in the world, or in life in general -- brighter days are ahead. Now they are here! Don't take them for granted.
Eat the fresh veggies, thank a farmer, support your local businesses, get outside and enjoy the sunshine, enjoy the summer events, and just be overall happy!
People are working very hard behind the scenes right now to get events together for you! I've already been to Fair Board meetings and Kentucky Wine and Vine Festival meetings, and I know Taste of Jessamine has started planning. How lucky are we in Jessamine County to host the PGA Barbasol tournament? Try to get your family out and go to them! I know you'll have a blast! There is plenty of fun for everyone to have at these!
I've asked locals what their favorite part of Summer is, and I've included that in here as well! I hope you enjoy the history story too! A murder over football tickets?! Can't make this up.
As you read this edition of JCL, I hope you are proud to live here, work here, and/or play here. I hope some of the articles will inspire you! I hope that as you are sitting on your front porch this Summer, you'll pick up JCL and give it another go-over. I hope you love it.

he Threlkeld Select School for boys operated in Nicholasville for nineteen years from 1902-03 through the 1920-21 school year. It was founded by Thomas Butler Threlkled, and was located on four acres at present-day 205 N Third Street The school was a large two-story house, with bedrooms upstairs for the twelve boarding students, plus downstairs it had living quarters for the Professor and his family, and more classrooms. The boarding students were usualy augmented by fifteen local boys, making an enrollment of twenty-seven students The course of study was extensive and complete, embracing the classics, sciences, music, and foreign languages, turning out graduates who were ready for the business world, or for college. In fact, all the colleges in Kentucky admitted Professor Threlkeld’s boys without examination, as his reputation as an educator was well known and respected.
Athletics were offered and encouraged as part of the well-rounding of the boys, and for the proper preservation of health. A gymnasium was eventually built on the property, and the school fielded interscholastic teams in baseball and football. During the football season, the boys would go around town selling tickets to home games Such was the case on October 7, 1920 when two boys entered Denman Brothers store in Nicholasville and asked William Denman if they wanted to buy tickets for that week’s game. Denman declined to do so, and when the boys returned to the school, they told Professor Threlkeld that they had been turned down.
Professor Threlkeld phoned the store and talked to William Denman, who said that theyere busy on the day of the game and would not be able to go. Professor Threlkeld then reminded him that the boys buy all their clothes there and if the Denman Brothers could not support the boys by buying tickets, then they would just take their business elsewhere William Denman initially told the Professor that they would buy tickets just to smooth things over, but then he had a change of heart and called Professor Thelkeld back. Denman did not like the way he had been talked to during the first phone call, and he told the Professor that he did not care if the school boys traded with them or not, and, in fact, it would best if the Professor’s grown son, Logan, who also taught at the school, would come in and pay his account balance and never set foot in the store again.
That return phone call outraged twenty-seven year old Logan Threlkeld, and he decided to go settle it man-toman The Professor was so worried about what might happen, that he stuck a pistol in his jacket pocket and followed Logan to the store.
That return phone call outraged twenty-seven year old Logan Threlkeld, and he decided to go settle it man-to-man. The Professor was so worried about what might happen, that he stuck a pistol in his jacket pocket and followed Logan to the store Once there, Logan got into a disagreement with thirty-year old William Denman, as the two took off their jackets and squared off for fisticuffs. Someone locked the door, and then William Denman told his brother Arthur to check the Professor for a weapon. According to the Professor’s later testimony, Arthur came towards him in a menacing manner and that is when the Professor pulled out the pistol and shot Arthur Denman in the stomach. He was rushed to a hospital in Lexington, where he died six days later, on October 13, 1920, at the age of thirty-three. He was a bachelor and left behind his mother and siblings.
Professor Threlkeld was charged with his murder, with a trial beginning on November 11, 1920 It ended the next day with a hung jury. He was then retried beginning on June 14, 1921, with a jury called from Mercer County men. That jury found him guilty on June 15, 1921, he was sentenced to life in prison, and remanded to the state prison in Frankfort. He was in poor health and there was an outpouring of support and sympathy for him Over two thousand people, some very prominent, and some former students, signed a petition asking Governor Edwin Morrow for a pardon. The Denman family asked for a hearing on the petition, and one was held on August 22, 1921. Governor Morrow heard the arguments that day, and then granted the Pardon on October 16, 1921, returning the ill Professor to his home, but the school was closed by then and would never reopen
The school property sold on February 1, 1923 to Melanethon Young for $6,500. He had plans to convert it to a hospital, but by 1925 it had been resold to J.R. Keller who turned it into apartments. On June 23, 1923, Professor Threlkeld died at the age of seventy-four from cancer His son Logan married a girl from Virginia and began teaching at Chatham Military School in that state, and then he became a professor of biology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now known as Virginia Tech), a position he held until 1958 when he retired. After retirement, he also taught at Milligan College in Tennessee, and Shorter College in Georgia He died in 1988 at the age of ninety-four
William Denman continued as a merchant after the death of his brother, and then after retirement dealt in antiques with his wife, Mary, from their location on north Main Street. William died in 1972 at the age of eighty-one. His wife Mary passed away in 2002 The disagreement over the football game tickets not only took the life of Arthur Denman, but also brought about the demise of Threlkeld Select School, and sent Logan Threlkeld on a path away from Nicholasville. The world was forever changed for both the Denman and Threlkeld families.

"Summer is long days and ice cold drinks on the porch with friends. It's watching your children's faces light up when they run into the cool water at the local pool and hearing their little giggles when you splash water at them. It's family vacations, and sun-kissed shoulders, the smell of sunscreen lingering on skin at the end of the day. It's chasing fireflies and ice cream cones melting onto tiny fingers. It's fireworks and barbecues and cornhole. It's night markets down small town streets and a baseball game on the television. It's togetherness with your family, your friends, and your local community.
(PS if you can't tell I love summer )"

Fishing, kayaking, festivals, being outside more. Personally, being out in the sun means less psoriasis outbreaks and smoother skin which improves moral and life in general.

As a child with 8 siblings (6 brothers & 2 sisters), summer time was fun time! My dad was a tenant farmer and we had access to a pond that we swam in, horses & a mule that we got to ride, plenty of acreage to explore & lots of farm animals to enjoy.
We also worked hard as a family of 11, so summertime was also spent in gardening, mowing, etc, but we did it together and we had a lot of fun! I have an internal need to be outdoors because of how I was raised. I am SO GRATEFUL for summer!!
-Joy W.
In the summertime, it's a perfect time to get and stay active, because you have more opportunities to get outside, and do what you love without it feeling like a chore. I hope you'll find these tips inspiring to incorporate a little bit more activity in your daily life this Summer season. Talking to myself here too!
You might be surprised how you can get carried away walking on a beautiful morning or evening, and burn extra calories at the same time!
Make every way the long way!
The good old days were when we were MADE to go outside and then made to come back in. How about trying to get outside with your kids or friends and playing a game?
I love this fact. Time splashing around in the pool counts as activity! It is fun and torches cals!
Everybody knows to take the stairs But what about the other simple steps? Park further away from the store Spend time going through all the aisles looking for something new. Every step is a step in the right direction.
If you love a good challenge, a friendly competition is a great way to get movin'!
Nicholasville offers a lot to get outside for this time of year I encourage all of you to get out there and enjoy all we have to offer. We have beautiful golf courses and we are the home of the PGA Barbasol tournament that's coming in July!
We are proud to host this PGA event right here at home. We also have the Jessamine County Fair, and the Kentucky Wine and Vine Festival this summer. The Wine and Vine Fest is in June, and the Fair and Barbasol are both in July.
While you're at it, check out our trails and be sure to shop our local businesses in Nicholasville. We are growing and are thankful for the businesses that choose Nicholasville, so let's get out there and support them. Have a great Summer!

It is summer; the days are filled with sunshine, warmth, and an abundance of things to do. Summers in Jessamine County are even more of a treat with all the community has to give, and the kindness of friends, family and fellow residents to share moments with In addition to the convenience of being centrally located in the Bluegrass, Jessamine County has a lot to offer right in our backyards. From the beautiful parks, to fruitful wineries, from adventurous hiking to relaxing shopping and dining, the county has an abundance of options. For these reasons and many more, I have enjoyed raising my family here, working here, and serving the people of Jessamine County

Dr Kim’s World Taekwondo Academy provides an awesome, fun, exciting, and educational summer camp experience for children in the Lexington community
Girl Scouts of Kentucky Wildnerness Road. Girls need connection more than ever, and camp is the perfect place for it, so we are making changes to keep girls safe!
For more than 50 years, kids in the Bluegrass have called Pepperhill Farm their “home away from home ” Nestled in the rolling hills of Jessamine County, it’s close enough to Lexington to be convenient for parents, but just far enough out of town for campers to get a taste country life
Camp is open only to those Kentucky students who are in grades 4 - 6 (as of April 1st) and not older than 13. All three KDFWR Conservation Camps are co-educational. Boys and girls from the same county will attend camp during the same week
A fun-filled week celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers, families, and communities
June 3rd, from 5:30 pm-7:30 pm. All kids welcome. Animal activities, and prizes.
Blazing trails... 4-H camp by the Jessamine County Extension office. Must be 9-14 years old by the first day of camp. Cloverbud campers must be 6-8 years old by the first day of camp.
The old adage, "do as I say, not as I do" might work with bad driving but, as parents, we can't escape the lessons caught from our financial habits. An attitude of frugality, holding to a budget, keeping an emergency savings, or decisions on where to vacation on summer break are just a few of the things that kids see and experience under our supervision. If financial fitness is a habit you'd like to pass on to your children, start where you are…not where you think you should be. As a family, begin to have conversations about what it means to have an emergency savings and why: so that inevitably, as things go wrong, we don't have to go into debt to solve them
For budgeting, try to verbally share the cost of things as it is appropriate For example, for a kid asking to eat at Fiesta Mexico on Friday night, rather than a simple "no because I said so," offer them the true difference of a restaurant meal versus a taco night at home. Many also find success in giving a chore-earned allowance and encouraging kids to save money to spend on the video game or toy they want.
One lesson, unfortunately learned the hard way by many of us, is the concept of compound interest and debt. How many student loans have been taken out without realizing the long-term impact of that type of debt? Again, this is an opportunity for us to both explain and show. One way to show the impact of compound interest would be in the positive sense, with investing. Take a small portion of birthday money or reward them for good grades and place it into an investment account then let them watch it grow over time! Opening a bank or savings account can also have future impact for a child's decision to head to college: a recent study shows that children from moderate-income families, who have a savings account for college, are three times more likely to go to college, and four times more likely to graduate college even if the account holds less than $500. As with anything in parenting, just start somewhere, and let's work together to build financially-savvy kiddos!

Or dine al fresco and pair your tapas and tacos with a locally distilled rum cocktail. Experience the thrill of the swing at PGA’s Barbasol Championship golf tournament or play a round of 18 holes with your friends. Take in the sweeping view of the Kentucky Palisades, best seen from the overlook of High Bridge once the tallest railroad trestle in the United States. Make the journey over the waters of the Kentucky River just like Daniel Boone did on the Valley View Ferry, the river’s last and oldest ferry service.
