A WARM WELCOME FROM ALL OF US TO ALL OF YOU! I’m sure you’re wondering what we have lined up for you during the month of April and the answer is, naturally, that we have more and more new and wonderful things for you to discover! This month, we’re excited to present to you the Menswear Fashion Week details - it’s happening all week this week so don’t you dare pass up the opportunity to see the latest fashions for men; Lexie Janson, the MWFW creator and organizer, has truly outdone herself and, trust me, you don’t want to miss a thing! Another highlight I ask you to please pay extra close attention to is the article about the Relay For Life of Second Life. Relay For Life is the premiere fundraising event organized by the American Cancer Society to raise awareness and help find a cure for this terrible disease. Second Life volunteers have been taking part, holding official Relay For Life fundraising events in world since 2005 and, over the years, more than $1,000,000 (that’s dollars, not lindens) have been raised from Second Life efforts. This year’s theme is “Time For A Cure.” Check it out and find a way to get involved - you won’t regret it! Of course, we’ve also got our usual goodies in store for you as well: Charmer brings a fresh new look at some fascinating artwork.

Hacsa Karrillion, our resident tour guide, takes you on a journey to discover a breathtaking sim design by Claudia222 known as SCREAM! Newcomer Kelley Blackheart invites you to experience Zapp, a virtual club based on its RL counterpart, Zap Club in Brighton, UK. There are also hunts to enjoy, fashion articles, and musicians such as the wonderfully folksy LindiMoo. You know what to do, readers! Grab yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, relax, and enjoy all we have in store for you then be sure to share with your friends. And, as always, stay tuned for next month’s issue!

HUNTING WE WILL GO!

BY EITHNE MCBRIDE

As this little article begins to grow, hunt organizers have been contacting SecondNighters and requesting to be included in our little feature and we could not be more thrilled! 20

Nature’s Hunt - Second Anniversary Hunt (3 March - 31 March) Congratulations to the organizers of The Nature’s Hunt for two years of high quality hunting to the grid. This hunt has a consistent, top notch reputation and, of course, this season’s hunt, themed My Wish Is Music (as in birthday wishes), doesn’t disappoint! The hunt will be more than a store to store hunt, we have a mix of stores, galleries, music venues and nature sims. All gifts will have a musical theme: music notes on fabrics, music items and more! What makes this hunt extra festive is that well-known SL musicians (Skye Galaxy, Starrfish Omhai, Bat Masters, to name a few) have agreed to offer a CD with their music as a hunt gift at the music venues. For more information and a peek at some of the terrific prizes, visit: http://www.firebeach.org/ index.php/blogs/68-fire-beach-presents-thenatures-hunt-whimsical-mythical-l

The Happy Hunters are getting everything lined up to bring you the retro, dark and sexy, Noir Nights Hunt - this is an adult themed hunt so be sure to live the kids at home when you venture out to find your goodies! Although the hunt is still in its preparation stage, with designers such as Kabuki Creations, Painfully Divine, and X-Clusives Animations, this is one, naughty hunt you won’t want to miss! For more information, stop by their website at: http://happyhuntershunt.wordpress.com/

Steam The Hunt 6 Hunt (1 March - 31 March)

Steampunk Hunt? Oh, yes. Now, here’s the thing about the Steam Hunt… even if Steampunk isn’t ~technically~ your thing? You need to check this hunt out. For some reason, this is just One Of Those Hunts That Everyone Wants In On. The group is chatty (but not obnoxiously so), the list of designers is massive… and some of these prizes are just over-the-top awesome such as the Steamy Bubbles Top Hat created by Hatpins and the Jug-o-nautilus airship brought to you by Epic Toy Factory! Have fun exploring and, if you need any additional information, stop by the official hunt blog here: http://historicalhunts.blogspot.com/

4

Who’s That Girl Hunt (1 April - 20 April)

40 Stores. 40 Hunt Prizes. 20 Days to find everything you’ll need for your new and glamorous look. Who’s That Girl is dedicated to bringing you fashion and skins from designers such as Loordes of London, Virtual Diva, Dollz and more that you’ll want to show off everywhere you go on the grid! Details can be found on the Who’s That Girl blog: http://www.whosthatgirl.com.ar/

5

Swayland Easter Hunt (25 March - 10 April)

We don’t often feature sim-only hunts but this one looked so cute, we just couldn’t pass it up without letting you know about it! There are 10 eggs hidden on Sway’s property and there are 3 stores included: Sway’s, DCD and Nonino. All of the hunt items will have a fresh, spring-related theme. Please visit Sway’s blog for more information: http:// www.sway-dench.com/

Melissa

and the SL Music...

by Melissa Islander

secondnightersMagazine

I am not really a fan of folk/country music but from time to time I hit a venue with that style of music, and, if in the mood I might even stay, which is what I did the other day when I found LindiMoo at the Snippets.

L

indi’s voice was cool - not unlike Joan Baez or Carol King I must say, both artists she admits have influenced her style. Her finely tuned acoustic guitar was a pleasure to listen to.

Lindi is from the Seattle, Washington area in the USA and she has been playing for more than 25 years. She has two CDs under her belt, one titled “’Bout Dam Time” released in 2003 and “Chasin’ Dreams” in 2008. LindiMoo is an international artist who has played in England, Ireland, the Southwest and the Northwest; she has even appeared on “Good Morning Arizona.” For 10 years, Lindi played with the Bluegrass/Folk band Across The Waters and enjoyed four years playing with the country/ classic rock group The Gone West Band in the Page/Lake Powell, Arizona area. Lindi also includes in her list of musical influences artists like Bonnie Raitt, Peter Paul and Mary, Dan Fogelberg, David Allen Coe, Willie Nelson, Beatles, Dixie Chicks, Fleetwood Mac, Indigo Girls, Janis Joplin, Jim Croce, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Norah Jones, Paul Simon, Pat Maloney, Patsy Cline and Tracy Chapman.

44

That list gives you a good idea of her general style of music but don’t be surprised if she also throws a song from Jason Mraz or REM into her sets. Lindi loves small and cozy audiences and SL brings this possibility to life. In the concert I attended, she tried to get everyone involved in an SL sing-along. We all had so much fun on our keyboards and after the concert, I had the opportunity to chat a little with her. She explained why she was caught into the LindiMoo name, a kind of family thing that starts with a joke. “It is a long story... started with my daughter...she thought because I laughed at Gary Larson cows (The Far Side comic) that I liked cows... I tried to explain to her that I just liked STOOPID cows doing stupid things and being non-bovine... like Gary Larsen’s... she ignored me and I got about three cow gifts a year... so people started calling me Moo... even my kids... And on the internet...turns out that LindiMoo was available. It’s been a running joke for decades that finally turned into a website.”

secondnightersMagazine Lindi discovered SL six months ago when a musician friend of hers told her he was performing here. His name is Lyndon Heart here in SL and it is because of him that she is here. They also bothplayed together at a gig in RL. I then asked her if playing here was a kind or rehearsal for live gigs, she answered like this: “No, it is part of my income. SL is actually on a trial basis... It’s not quite where I want it to be... and if I don’t make it worthwhile to continue playing here I will replace my SL time with RL gigs. The thing is, I enjoy the SL gigs way more and the fact that I don’t have to haul equipment is, well, very appealing. Like today! OMG were you here for the whole thing? It was a freakin’ blast! How can I not enjoy making a living this way? So SL is experimental for me... lol... but the more I’m here the more glued here I’m getting so… I BETTER figure out how to make it worthwhile…” And I thought that tips would just about pay SL clothes!

She continued: “I am not sure I have been around long enough to make judgments on the SL music scene. I just played at Metaverse and it was a great gathering of music lovers and musicians. I like how there is a huge diversity of the types of musicians that perform here on SL. From the beginner musicians to the seasoned professionals... to the “I just do this for fun” people. It’s like... just about anyone can express themselves and perform here... and there will be an audience for them - an encouraging audience at that!” At the end of the interview Lindi concluded: “I would like to say that music to me is more of a lifestyle than a job. My favorite quote comes from a Jackie Chan movie (a silly movie but the quote is good)… a woman is playing a stringed instrument. She stops and looks at the young man next to her and says ‘It is said that music is the bridge between heaven and earth.’ That is what music is to me.”

Showcase Live music news...

by Sandy Demina http://showcaseliveinsecondlife.blogspot.com/

secondnightersMagazine

ADEVINA CITRON Adevina Citron is born and raised in the US and she currently lives in New York. She’s been a singer since she was very young. She remembers getting on stage when she was 5 years old in church and singing. “ Music was a big part of my life throughout my teen years .- she says- I’ve performed and competed, written songs, and been involved with music , but never professionally” I asked her how did she discover SL and what brought her inworld. “I was first introduced to the idea of Second Life from an episode of “The Office” ,but it was over a year later that I gave any thought to checking it out. I had no idea what it was about, but since I had enjoyed SIMs video game in the past,I thought I’d check it out. I had NO idea what I was getting involved. I was just looking for a way to pass the time. When I first logged into SL, I did understand the basic premise of interacting with people in a virtual world and actually had made the decision to keep SL and RL very separate.

Due to my RL profession, I was very cognizant of potential safety issues and wanted to ensure the safety of myself and my family. So no, at the time when I first logged into SL, I purposefully decided NOT to use my RL name. Now, as I’ve already stated, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into at the time and now, there are people on SL who not only know my RL name, but where I am, talk to me on the phone and I’ve even met face-to-face. And though Adevina is my primary avatar, I do have an alt with my RL name, who I use as an extension of my RL profession. Then I asked her to describe her experience in SL, if she likes to go to live music concerts or to art exibits. ”Oh MY...I think the question is more what don’t I like.... Though I take my music on SL very seriously, SL is a unbelievable world of discovery. I support friends and visit talent that I’ve never heard before as often, but I’ve also taken advantage of amusement parks, museums full of various types of art and sculptures. I’ve gone bowling, to amusement parks, and out to restaurants on SL. I’ve been moved my memorial sites that bring awareness to various causes such suicide and abuse, and I’ve been educated about everything from space science to ancient civilizations. In RL, I’m a social worker and I work as a therapist, so from a sociological point of view, SL is absolutely fascinating. The people I’ve met are infinitely unique, as are the various reasons that bring them and keep them in SL. If you were to ask me in RL, what do I do, I ‘d be able to cite off a dozen hats that I wear, and in SL, it is no different. I’m a singer, yes! I’ve taken on the responsibility of an educator, yes! BUT....II also have a family, very close friends, and employees. I’m a Norian on leave (involved in RP in Nor), a therapist(with my alt), an explorer and a learner....always learning. Then I asked what influenced her musically. “ Music for me has always been a method of catharsis...growing up, I’d be fascinated by the ability of people to express things that culturally unacceptable .

52

secondnightersMagazine Fear, abandonment, vulnerability, even extremely positive emotions like ecstasy and boundless happiness... My personality lends itself to wanting people to feel free to be who they are and embrace it all...in the good and the bad.” Adevina does believe that SL is a valid place to perform and to showcase music. This is the reason why she started her virtual performances. Then I asked how would she describe her style. “In a word... fun! And not just in a “thanks for the laugh, but now I have to go somewhere else an be miserable” kinda way. I mean, that I want you to think back on having spent time with me and if you don’t remember a single song that I sang, you’ll remember that you had a good time.” People are the source of Adevina’s inspiration:”The endless lives and stories that surround me everyday.”

GOOAAAALLLL!

LIGA FUTBOL VIRTUAL L I recently caught up with Alistar Snook, president of the New York Cosmos to get a little insight into the LFV.

Liga Futbol Virtual (or LFV) began in 2007 and is currently home to 8 teams. If you’re into the sport, then the names will sound familiar. We’re talking about SL Milan, New York Cosmos, Napoli, Inter, and Catanzaro along with Indargazte from Spain, Cadiz and the best team and winner of the last tournament, Deportivo la Coruna.

According to Mr. Snook, just like in the real world, Second Life’s World Cup is a coveted prize with a cool $1 million Lindens going to the winning team!! Currently, the teams are gearing up for tournament play and it’s his hope to see more teams from Argentina, Colombia, and the USA join in.

58

ike other sports here in SL, the biggest setback they have to face is the lack of marketing throughout the grid to promote their product. Unlike many of the clubs and dance places in world, the sports entities haven’t found that niche way of tapping into the collective SL sports minded conscious. With their attention to detail and their passion for their sport, it’s only a matter of time before this collection of owners finds a way to spread of the word of such a great sport to the corners of SL. If you are a soccer or football fan, you would be remiss in not looking more into the fun and friendly competition that is this great escape here in SL.

secondnightersMagazine

F

utbol, or as we in the USA call it, soccer, is alive and well within the Second Life sports scene. For many around the world, this past time is more than just a sport - for many, it’s a way of life. Where better to transition that passion than your Second Life home?

F

or more information, contact Alistar Snook, president of the New York Cosmos or check out their website at http://www.ligafutbolvirtual.com

Whatever your sport of choice might be, it would be well worth it to take some time to find out more and support LFV and the other great leagues in SL. Live your passion here in Second Life!

MACHINIMIA WHAT IS THIS ?

The simplest explanation is this: Machinima is the use of 3D computer graphics rendering engines to create a cinematic production. In Second Life, Machinima is real-world film making applied on the grid. Actors are controlled by actors and/or scripts to create a vast variety of 3D graphic movies. Duda Giano, co-owner of D & T Images and Film Making with his wife, Thati Boucher-Giano, is one such film maker in world and his work is stunning! Duda, a RL Brazilian cardiologist, found his Second Life artistic outlet when he discovered the world of machinima. When he was a bit of a newcomer to the grid, he saw similar projects from other artists, became curious and began tinkering at creating movies in world. It didn’t take long for Giano to realize he had a LOT to learn so naturally, he did what any intelligent man who grew up before the days when every house had at least one computer would do: he asked his RL son to show him the ropes! Luckily for us, Duda’s son was a wonderful teacher. The ins and outs of computer-generated film making were taught and learned and today, Duda is one of the most soughtafter Machinographers in Second Life.

Once you’ve seen some of his artistic creations, it’s easy to see why Giano is in such high demand. His artistic eye and attention to detail are impeccable. Duda gives most of the credit to his wife, Thati, an incredible photographer; she is with him while he works and is always willing to help if he questions lighting, sets, or anything else. Thati, however, quickly passes the praise right back to her husband: “Duda compliments me but really it is he who has the artistic eye and the attention to detail - I don’t think I could do what he does!” she said. Because his real life work as a cardiologist is so demanding, Duda doesn’t have as much free time as he would like to create machinima. However, whenever he’s in world, you can almost always rest assured that he and Thati are working on something spectacular in one of the many sets on their expansive, sim-wide home.

by Kelley Blackheart Zapp is a club like no other. The concept for Zapp is patterned after the RL Zap Club located in the United Kingdom and was created by LeahJane Munro in March of 2009. Zapp Club is an energetic and exciting place to visit as the walls vibrate with the sounds of House and Trance - let loose on the dance floor or take a stroll and visit the shops surrounding the club. Upon entering the club I was instantly greeted by one of Zapp’s generous hosts, JanetSontag Resident, while my ears were blessed by the DJing sensation, LeahJane Munro, who was spinning her own personal music, as all DJs do in this club. I had a chance to speak with the spinning sensation herself as she was going through one of her sets, and she very generously shared information about both her club and her own personal DJing experience: Kelley Blackheart: So, did you DJ in the Real Zap Club by any chance?

70

LeahJane Munro: Yes I did, before it changed hands and became digital about five years ago. Kelley Blackheart: Is that why you decided to make a Second Life version of Zapp? LeahJane Munro: Yes! We pride ourselves on the standard of our DJs here. They must all be live mix DJs. I still do odd events in Real Life, too. Personally, I have more than 40 releases to my name which can be found with a youtube search. I play here (Zapp) most days from 2PM to 4PM and my main styles of music are hardstyle, hard trance, and trance, but I’m an all around DJ and can play any style. LeahJane also had this to say about her club: “Zapp might not be the biggest club in Second Life but we are friendly towards all people. We host many music events and this year plan to hold many festivals.” I couldn’t agree more.

secondnightersMagazine Everyone in this club was very friendly and made my experience a joyful one! Curiosity struck me as I heard about upcoming festivals, and Leahjane directed me over to JaneMay Teardrop, a co-owner, for dates for their upcoming events. JaneMay told me about their third birthday festival, a huge burlesque event. She also informed me about a hard festival event coming up in May - this will be a summer festival which tends to last three days, and many more in the talking stages. Leahjane’s vision for an amazing and strong club shines through the moment you step foot in her club. Never a dull moment as the DJ’s for 24/7, seven days a week. With new events happening all the time and exciting upcoming festivals in progress, this is definitely a place you don’t want to miss. LEAHJANE MUNRO

If you are looking for an amazing, extraordinary, and one hundred percent real DJ, LeahJane is exactly who you are looking for.

72

eahJane Munro is a reputable trance/house/dance DJ who is also the co-owner of the wellknown SL club, Zapp. Residing in the United Kingdom, LeahJane graciously brings us her music through Second Life. She began her Second Life mainly for fun using a different, undisclosed avatar that worked mostly for Gorean sims. She left that avatar to start her journey as a DJ on non-RP sims. LeahJane then decided that what Second Life needed was more real life DJs, and not any more of the usual “wannabee DJs. At that moment, LeahJane immediately started working as a DJ using real life mixes for her audiences.

L

eahJane says that music has always been a part of her life and, starting at the age of eighteen, she became a Real Life DJ. Now at thirty years old, LeahJane has studied music in school for many years. She said she had even been taught by Chriss Dangerous, who is a well know drum and bass DJ. She has played for crowds as large as 12,000 people in Real Life. LeahJane loves to make her own mixes using a one-hundred percent live mixer using four pioneer 800 cdjs and a pioneer mixer.

secondnightersMagazine myMagazine

All of her sets are custom made and professionally done. It is no wonder that hundreds of people have passed through Zapp to listen to this awesome DJ. With her indescribable dance/trance/ house mixes, you will be up and wanting to shuffle and dance in your real life along with your avatar. LeahJane is definitely one DJ you will not want to miss out on. Come check out her amazing tunes at Zapp, usually during a two to four afternoon set.

Everyone, at some point in their life, has probably heard of or scene examples of works from Warhol or Lichtenstein, but in this article I plan to cover some maybe lesser-known artists that come to us from both real life and second life, and are in many ways, as equally talented in their own right. What I also plan to introduce to you is the contrast between ideas, from one artist to the next, even when they work with the same media. Each of these artist’s works can be viewed at the same location where I drew my inspiration, a place that simply by its name, shows us that it does not matter whether its in real life or in Second Life, there is art all around us, every day. So take the leap with Me, won’t you? Let’s all cross over to...CrossWorlds Gallery. Let’s start off with something that may shock some of you, but will hopefully give you the idea of where this article is going, right off the bat. The first piece I want to bring to your attention is one called, Kinky Boy and the Empress, done by Sigfred Rodenburger. This ink and pencil work may bring to mind a hint of a name that I mentioned earlier, Roy Lichtenstein.

However, there are vast differences, at least in My view, between the styles and yet they are without a doubt within the same movement of PopArt. Next up, we take another flashback to compare PopArt works, from Andy Warhol to a current one that I spotted at the gallery from Brandolaccio Vendetta. Warhol was mostly known by the masses for his Campbell’s soup and Marilyn Monroe PopArtpieces, and within those subjects he created many different collages, which is exactly what Vendetta does in the work depicted in this article called, Friends.

So what we see once again, is just what the greats did back in their time..the only difference being, the content and subject matter, while the technique remains the same. Some of the works that I found in my exploration of the gallery, offer up a glimpse of how artists from real life, bring their creations into Second Life, and how others use the virtual world and the power of the digital world as a whole, without the benefit of first creating on canvas or any other real life method.

One of the best ways it seems that artists have found to bring their works into Second Life, is to simply scan in an image and upload it, but what if your work is not just a flat painting or photograph. In the case of those that are 3D artists and sculptors, they need a way to give a better impression of what they have created in real life and that is where the prim building available to them in Second Life comes into play. A particular piece that caught my eye was one by Scottius Polke called, Pileup on Avenue N, which is representative of a work that he created in real life and has given us a chance to view by utilizing the tools available to him here in this virtual world. Another artist that utilized the virtual world to the fullest was, Schmonson Dalglish, with his digital painting called, Garden of Delights. This piece unlike any of the others that I mention in this article, is wholly created in the virtual world, and while some would say, that can’t be art, because its not traditional...isn’t that the very definition of art and its interpretation? To make what you want, how you want and how you see it in your mind, to express yourself fully and move others to contemplate what you intended. I also spoke a little about the idea of some artists taking a picture and uploading that image of a real life work that they

secondnightersMagazine have done, for Us all to see, but as a lil twist, let’s talk some about photographers who’s actual works are that of the pictures that they have snapped and in some cases manipulated to create some amazing pieces. I have two such works to bring you in this article, which is only a small sampling, just as all the other things we are discussing but I hope that it brings you a better understanding of just how vast the art world both in real life and in Second Life really is. The first is called, Color Canyon, by Consuela Caldwell, which is a photograph that has been tweaked using photo editing software, to give bright colors and almost an abstract look to the image and sort of fool the eye into thinking this may not be a photograph at all. The other work is by Artistide Despre, called La Courtine, which is done using a technique referred to as Kallitype. This is an old-world method that used various chemicals to give a richer tone to the photograph when it was being

developed, sometimes enriched with silver or gold to prolong the image, as they were known for fading when the chemicals were often left on the image. Each of these artists’ works are based around the same media and genre, however they are taken to completely different levels, one by older methods that take us all back in time and the other using technology of our time, to propel us into the future. Each of these artists as well as many others in this gallery and throughout Second Life, personify what I believe CrossWorlds Gallery is all about. They show us that not only can and should we appreciate the art that is in the world around us, but also when you are sitting here at your computer, art is still at your fingertips, if you only take the initiative to find it.

FASHION MESH ADDICTS! Alright, everyone - a show of hands, please. Who here has been a mesh hold-out in favor of one of their old, favourite, third-party viewers? *raises hand*

98

A

s a Second Life “relic” (I’ve been here since 2005), I revel in being able to say “I’ve seen it all.” I remember when we wore dresses in the pre-flexiprim days. I was so excited when I bought my first scripted skirt from Suki’s and then, a couple of years later, when I bought my first dress with gorgeous sculpties from Caverna Obscura. And then there was mesh. Now, I understand that, especially as someone who is considered fashion-forward, I should be a bit quicker on the uptake but I’d seen a few early mesh items and I really could not understand what the hoopla was all about. To me, the textures looked strange - realistic, yes, but something was “not quite right” about them - in fact, they almost looked a little to me as though we were reverting to the old days. I wasn’t having it! And then something happened. Specifically, my husband discovered mesh clothing……….and he fell in LOVE. He bought a mesh shirt - plaid - and a pair of jeans. Then in came boots. And a second pair of boots. And then baggy jeans. And shorts. Two jackets (that I know of ). And more shirts (to go with the sneakers he’d bought, I assume)... One by one, I watched this man replace his entire wardrobe with mesh fashion. I told him I was going to do an intervention and enroll him in a 12-step program for mesh addicts. But eventually he won me over, convincing me to just try one thing. He’d take me shopping and he’d buy me something - anything! as long as it was mesh. So off to Maitreya we went - I mean, really. Free clothing from one of my favourite stores? How could I say no? I couldn’t. And I didn’t. So, there you have it. I was dragged, kicking and screaming (kind of ), into this latest trend in Second Life by the man I love.

his spring marked the first ever Mix & Mesh Fair from February 25 through March 10. Seventeen innovative designers such as Vera Modero, Hucci, and Hoorenbeek presented their collections in a series of fashion shows and the organizers of the event, Avenue Magazine, held a styling contest in which contestants were given the opportunity to enter one photo using at least three mesh items purchased from fair vendors. Ten finalsts were chosen and, from that elite group, one winner was selected to receive a $10,000L prize and a photo spread in a future issue of Avenue Magazine. Who are some of the most sought-after names during this advent of Mesh fashion explosion? The top of the list has to include Ladies Who Lunch (http:// www.lwlunch.com/#!lookbook) and Maitreya (http://sl-maitreya.blogspot.com/). These designers might be a little pricey for some

budgets but, I assure you, the difference in quality is easily noticeable. At the forefront of mesh hair - and a bit more budget friendly - I have to mention Truth (http://www.truth-hawks.com/) and Wasabi Pills (http://wasabipills.tumblr.com/). A word to my fellow newcomers to the world of mesh: be SURE to buy the demo of anything you think looks interesting before blowing your budget on a full-on purchase! I learned this lesson the hard way when, upon finally installing Firestorm (and getting it to work correctly), I rushed exuberantly to the marketplace for my first mesh purchase. In my haste, let’s just say I bought a little something-something that wasn’t quite right for me. My husband had a good laugh at my expense and what can I say? I learned a valuable lesson! Take my word for it: no matter what you’re interested in purchasing, TRY THE DEMO FIRST. One thing is absolutely certain: from low prim, highly textured buildings and furniture to fashion and even full avatars, mesh is here to stay in Second Life. This is big news and just think - in years to come, you’ll be able to say to SL noobs, “I remember what it was like when mesh first arrived in SL,” to their amazement. Discover your style, readers, and enjoy the journey!

COLPO WEXLER

DIGITAL CULT LIFESTYLE C

olpo Wexler has among his credits, minimalist architectural reconstruction of the Eiffel Tower for the land NO Nsfyat of Dubai (the latest) and SOMA, the San Francisco Museum of ART. Wexler, who calls himself a minimalist artist, is best known internationally by his large construction projects. He is an architect who first is a philanthropist of architecture - structures that remain the most concrete signs of a civilization, witnessed an almost sacred life since immemorial time. Once upon a time Colpo Wexler was a newbie in Second Life who, in real life, had been interested in creativity as a web designer from 1996 to 2007. He joined the world of Second Life fascinated by its 3D aspect, to understand each dimension as described in the book “VRML” by Mark Pesce, who wrote about the advent of virtual reality and the increasingly

102

central role of the avatar as its protagonist. Colpo Wexler, now with more than five years of experience in Second Life, carries a surprising variety of roles in the virtual: he is kind of a hybrid mix between engineer, architect, sculptor, artist, builder, philanthropist and husband. He’s the owner of several sims, including that of the Italian community (Itland) and owner of Digital Cult Lifestyle, the virtual company that deals with developing customized projects for dozens and dozens of sims. Colpo’s passion for building in SL is also his real job - he says that SL is his work and real life is his moment of leisure. The Digital Lifestyle Cult also has a website and a showroom in world to purchase the buildings (clubs, stores, megastores of all sizes and prices) designed by the artist himself.

secondnightersMagazine

e’s either loved or he’s hated. There is no lukewarm for Colpo Wexler, the Italian builder in charge of creating so many environments inspired by nature, drawing magic surfaces with his mouse strokes, which perfectly combine the technical and aesthetic while beauty envelops everything through scenarios and spaces with forms that strongly evoke the concept of flow, movement, light and transparency, giving spaces created on a human scale...

C

olpo’s work is inspired by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava, the man who projected the Chicago Spire and the Milwaukee Art Museum, which Colpo reminds us “is probably his most successful work.” Once he became comfortable with life in world, Wexler decided to stay in Second Life and develop his creativity “for passion and a deepening of some of my theories about what to me is the aesthetic philosophy of the twenty-first century.” What theories? “That,” he says, “which is essentially based on the NDS (No linear dynamic system). Essentially an intuitive approach to the universe of perception.

Second Life, like reality, is a chaotic system that thrives on abstract rules. The representation, namely the threedimensional artifacts, exhibit abstract requirement, which goes beyond the system itself. A sort of triumph of the archetypes of Jung but applied with some components introduced in the ‘60s by the famous Konrad Lorenz. Put it this way,” Wexler continues, “chaos is an essential feature, the self similarity. Second Life is like all four-dimensional systems, even though everyone always forget the time dimension.”

103

secondnightersMagazine

I

n practice, Colpo theorizes that Second Life is an incubator revised in intrapsychic needs that are released into expressive forms such as, in his case, building.

Even if at some point you’re making more than that one thing, you are still summarizing, taking abstract ideas, you’re taking rational programmatic ideas, and you’re doing something more than creating “an object of pure reason.” For this, Colpo Wexler is first and foremost an alchemist of the building. How to transform a strictly initiated know how into knowledge for all? Making knowledge gained from years of hard work and painful process accessible to all. For Colpo, finally, the “new knowledge” is identified with the non-linearity, or rather in triadicity connected with the conception of a “non-linear dynamic system.” Commonly and incorrectly called the Chaos Theory and Complexity Theory.

From here, the splitting of the triangle: system, as such as any entity that is subject to change with the passage of time, dynamicity as such as evolution, then non-linearity intended which between cause and effect in a process in which we tend to bring together the mind and nature, the connection, or as the mediator capable of passing objects invisible of the psychic world into which concrete visible object in the physical world of the artist. Colpo Wexler and his structures in fact, into a blending of psychoanalysis and quantum mechanics. By Second Life our artist appreciates the fact that “it’s impossible to describe it. Many have tried but realistically there is no an universal foundation in those descriptions. I think that this is fascinating because it clearly shows its chaotic characteristics. Do you remember The Matrix, the film, and the conversation between Neo and Morpheus? It’s not possible to describe the matrix .. we can only guess. The same applies to Second Life - there are additional components that go beyond what we see.”

“Praesent imperdiet nunc et sem dignissim elementum. Donec lobortis congue fringilla. Donec consequat ornare sodales. Nunc posuere mattis mi, ut facilisis ligula accumsan vel. In consectetur accumsan diam, eget porttitor justo luctus id. “

104

secondnightersMagazine And about the Italian community in SL, specifically, in fact he believes this: “the nationalist community is to be avoided. Here there are people from all over the planet. Better to deal with everyone. However, let’s say that I think other communities are more advanced. There are Italians who do spectacular things, but they do not do them for the Italian community. Instead, they make for themselves.” And for a young builder at the beginning, more than teaching a few new tricks, Wexler reveals that he would give a practical secret: “You need to create your own, unique style that is distinctive and recognizable so that when people see a building they know exactly who built it without having to ask who is the creator.” I asked Wexler his thoughts on the future of Second Life. “Second Life,” Colpo Wexler says, “has a static and steady development trend.

I

t’s a system almost entirely created by users. Linden Lab is really just a provider that sells space on servers.

However, if we want to evaluate it from a technical standpoint I think Second Life as a system can have a remarkable improvement in only one case: that when it opens the system to other grids, and then when the entire server system based on this type of technology will be unified. There would be no difference between SL and OpenSim various providers and anyone could do. In this case, Linden Lab would lose the record and this will happen when Linden Lab will be incubated by someone else. One thing is sure. SL will not die.”

n RL, teams of people from all walks of life have fun camping out at a local high schools, parks, or fairgrounds and take turns walking or running around a track or path while raising much-needed funds to fight cancer and raise awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times.

What is Relay For Life of Second Life? Relay For Life of Second Life (RFL of SL) is an annual activity that takes place in Second each year. Volunteers form or join teams to have fun while fundraising and raising awareness from mid-March through mid-July. Just like RL, in July teams build campsites and walk a track. Since 2005, Relay For Life of Second Life has raised over $1 million USD for the American Cancer Society. In 2011, with participants from more than 80 countries taking part, Relay For Life of Second Life raised more than $374,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate together in the fight against cancer during a 24-hour overnight relay event. 108

secondnightersMagazine

History of Relay For Life of Second Life In 2005, Second Life saw the first volunteer-driven RFL fundraiser take place on a 6-sim track. 315 participating avatars raised $5,000. Each year, attendance and involvement for the Relay For Life has grown by leaps and bounds. By 2007, the 1831 participants in the SL Relay For Life “Quest For A Cure” event raised more than $100,000 by racing around 32 sims. And, as if that wasn’t exciting enough, 2011 brought the highest numbers yet. With more than 2100 avatars taking part in RFL of SL’s “Seasons of Hope” event,$375,000 were raised as participants raced around a 44-sim track!

2012 Relay For Life of Second Life This year, the theme for the eighth Relay For Life of Second Life is all-too-appropriately named, “Time For A Cure.” The event chair is MamaP Beerbaum and her co-chairs are Dwen Dooley and Nikki Mathieson. The Relay officially kicked off on March 10th and between now and July 14-15 (relay weekend), teams from all across the grid will offer opportunities to take part in many, many fundraising events. Be sure to check out the official events page (http://main. acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLifeRFLFY12SL?sid=157618&typ e=fr_informational&pg=informational&fr_id=42558) and stop by and donate to a highly worthy cause - every, single linden counts. Better yet, become a sponsor for a team that will be relaying! Help “Paint SL Purple” from May 12 - 20! Attend the Fantasy Faire from April 21 - 29 or stop by the Home and Garden Expo between May 19 - 28! There are countless ways that we can ALL make a difference together because it truly IS Time For A Cure.

Community Relay

Student Relays

Bark For Life

At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track. Each team has a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight up to 24 hours in length. Most of the fundraising is performed by teams during the months leading up to the Relay For Life event.

Over the years, students in Relay communities have shown a passion for fighting cancer. Now, elementary, middle, high school and college students each have their own way to participate in the fight against cancer.

It’s a fundraising event that honors the caregiving qualities of canine companions. As a revenue enhancer to a community Relay, a Bark For Life event can be organized as a pre- or post-Relay fundraiser or as a team fundraiser in which an entire community can participate.
