As poet and essayist Gary Snyder once said, “Nature is not a place to visit; it is home.” It is no wonder so many visitors to the HighlandsCashiers Plateau report that their vacations feel like returning home — so much so that many feel inspired to stay.

Drawn to the Blue Ridge Mountains by breathtaking scenery and a deep affinity for nature, area homeowners often wish to expand their living space into the great outdoors. In the mountains, many of life’s best moments are lived on trails, at the edges of cliffs, or even just in one’s own backyard, with a soundtrack of a trickling stream or roaring waterfall playing in the background. Fortunately, local and regional landscape designers are just as inspired by these settings, viewing them as a promising canvas to create a masterpiece.

Cashiers-area landscape architect Mary Palmer Dargan is intimately familiar with the desire for innovative outdoor living spaces. Following a personal mantra of “Form follows function, then beautify,” she works to develop spaces according to the homeowner’s vision for its use and then complements the space’s natural beauty with thoughtfully chosen accents. She says that terraces are popular because they can fulfill a number of purposes while allowing homeowners and guests to soak in the sights and sounds supplied by the surroundings.

I LIKE TO FOLLOW THE TERRAIN WHEN POSITIONING THESE OUTDOOR TERRACES TO TAKE IN A BEAUTIFUL VIEW OR AN ATMOSPHERIC ROCK OUTCROPPING.” LOCATION IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE WHEN CHOOSING A HOME, AND THIS STRATEGY TAKES MAXIMUM ADVANTAGE OF THE NATURAL BEAUTY SUPPLIED BY A SITE.

Out-of-the-box thinking can help homeowners quickly pivot to use their outdoor spaces in a multitude of ways. Dargan recommends folding tables and chairs, tablecloths, and zippered storage that can be stashed out of sight. That way, multi-use spaces can be configured for the occasion and circumstances, allowing for more enduring designs that stand the test of time.

Asheville-based landscape architect Vic Knight has witnessed the same uptick of interest in usable outdoor spaces. “What clients prioritize right now is immersion in nature. They want to

enjoy a great view, listen to the soothing sounds of a stream, and create a calm, relaxing place to unwind alone or entertain guests.”

Some of Knight’s clients vacation in spa locations and then seek to replicate that experience at home — which he has accomplished enthusiastically. “My goal is ultimately to create your ideal garden. Your landscape design should provoke an emotional response, and that is always my goal as we create a plan together. How do you want to feel when you step outside?”

Landscape Designer Renee Byrd, based in Cashiers, concurs. “What I love about Cashiers and Highlands is that each property is unique. I create a plan based on the land, considering the homeowner’s desires for utilizing it. We talk about what they want to accomplish with the space. More and more are asking to integrate their living spaces with the outdoors. That can be living areas, dining areas, or even a space used as an outdoor office.”

With any outdoor space, particularly one used for entertaining, lighting becomes an essential consideration. Dargan describes Cashiers as a “dark skies village” due to the rural location and lack of widespread lighting seen in larger municipalities. That description elaborates on what residents love about Cashiers rather than describing a deterrent. With area homeowners preferring a more natural ambiance, Dargan focuses on providing pierced-work lanterns or small deck lights set into posts to provide muted lighting and safer walkways at night.

Nothing lights up the night more than a roaring fire, and fire features have surged in popularity in recent years. Both Knight and Byrd report an increased interest in fire pits, fire bowls, and outdoor fireplaces. With temperatures on the Plateau running cooler than surrounding areas, the added warmth and ambiance are appreciated in the cool seasons and even on some summer evenings.

KNIGHT EVEN INCORPORATES FIRE BOWLS INTO WATER FEATURES, WHICH HE SAYS COMPRISE ABOUT FIFTY PERCENT OF HIS WORK AT THE MOMENT. “EVERYONE IS INTERESTED IN WATER FEATURES SUCH AS LAP POOLS, SMALL PONDS, RECIRCULATED STREAMS, AND WATERFALLS BECAUSE A BODY OF WATER PROVIDES A CERTAIN

ATMOSPHERE. WE’RE POSITIONING INFINITY EDGE POOLS TO TAKE MAXIMUM ADVANTAGE OF MOUNTAIN VIEWS, AND WE CAN FLANK EITHER SIDE WITH A FIRE BOWL TO ILLUMINATE THE SCENE AT NIGHT.”

And scenes are the latest thing that everyone wants to create. Homeowners look to establish a vacation or spa atmosphere on their private property, with features such as maintained trails and recirculated streams taking center stage. Many look to create cozy nooks within their landscaping, such as pavilions alongside a pathway overlooking a babbling brook. Illuminated by landscape lighting, with a hot tub on the deck, pavilions tucked away into wooded areas provide a resort feeling in one’s own backyard.

“Features like this become a destination on the property,” Knight explains. “Homeowners want a spot to sit and sip their coffee or wine, soak in the view, and enjoy solitude or entertain guests. I use plants and other features like an interior designer would use furniture, fabrics, and art.”

In the wake of pandemic recommendations and concern for public health, home-based entertainment has enjoyed renewed interest in recent years. Rather than large, lavish parties in public locations, homeowners focus on private gatherings in the comfort of their own homes or backyards. During that time, Dargan reflects, “many became accustomed to spending a good amount of time outside in their gardens, or with their family outside doing activities.”

That sense of connection underscores the home gardening movement, with more gardeners realizing the benefits of growing fresh vegetables and herbs within walking distance of the kitchen. “Clients are looking for that sense of connection with nature,” Byrd says. “They walk right outside and gather ingredients for whatever they’re cooking.”

For those with a do-it-yourself mentality, Dargan offers courses on garden design. “In our garden design course, Placemakers Academy, we’ve seen an uptick in enrollment, and people want to know how to treat their home grounds sustainably regarding topics like composting, pollination, harvesting, and utilizing geothermal energy.”

Addressing a common concern about vegetable gardening, Dargan clarifies, “Not everybody wants to or can devote a large amount of time to it, so small six-foot by three-foot containers are very useful and can become a design item that looks pretty all the time.” Flowers can be intermingled with food gardens so that even purposeful beds contribute charm to the landscape.

Knight also utilizes various edible plants in his landscapes when homeowners express an interest. “It can be a bit surprising, in a good way, to see rosemary or creeping thyme incorporated into the design,” he says. “But we include them for the pleasant fragrance and texture, particularly when the client likes the idea of growing food in their garden.”

Of course, the unique climate on the HighlandsCashiers Plateau impacts plant selection. After beginning her career in the Lake Keowee, South Carolina region, Byrd moved to Cashiers and began designing landscapes here approximately ten years ago. “I quickly realized that the temperatures average about ten to fifteen degrees colder up here, and we receive so much rainfall. I rely on native plants that can withstand those conditions or cultivated hybrids that fulfill a specific purpose.”

While native plants are accustomed to the area’s specific weather conditions, plant breeders create cultivars to fit more compactly in certain spaces, to bloom longer, or even to provide flowers of a preferred color. Knight uses a questionnaire to help clients define their hopes and expectations. “We can incorporate favorite colors and textures… Do they love a particular flower because it reminds

them of their grandmother’s garden? We tease out that emotional connection to certain plants and then incorporate them into the design.”

Dargan reports that the mountainous terrain and significant rainfall create a need for landscaping that accounts for erosion and drainage. Narrow driveways and parking areas can be redesigned, and large boulder walls can shore up sloping terrain in an attractive and functional way. Mountain dwellers can rest assured that creative solutions are available to solve practical concerns while taking maximum advantage of the natural beauty of their site. “The sky is the limit with generating more and more enlightened landscape architectural designs in my world!”

Climate and terrain aren’t the only unique aspects of life on the Plateau. With so many homeowners residing here part-time, the seasonal nature of residency impacts landscape design in surprising ways.

“A lot of my clients are gone for half of the year,” Knight explains. “We carefully select plants that will thrive in their absence, needing little care until they return.”

Byrd takes a similar approach to the design process. “We talk about their favorite colors and flowers, and then we can select flowering plants specifically for their bloom time so that the landscape looks its best while the client is in town to enjoy it.”

DESCRIBING HER PASSION FOR LANDSCAPE DESIGN, BYRD SAYS, “I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST, AND MY CAREER ALLOWS ME TO COMBINE ART AND SCIENCE WHILE SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS.” WHEN VIEWED FROM THIS PERSPECTIVE, LANDSCAPE DESIGN TAKES ON AN ENTIRELY NEW MEANING. FAR FROM A MERELY PRACTICAL SOLUTION OR GEOGRAPHIC NECESSITY, A LANDSCAPE BECOMES A PERSONALLY COMMISSIONED WORK OF ART — THE RESULT OF COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE HOMEOWNER, DESIGNER, AND NATURE’S GLORIOUS CANVAS.

A summer spent in the mountains can feel like returning home. The slower pace of life, fresh mountain air, and cooler ambient temperatures provide true rejuvenation for the mind and body.

But for members of The Chattooga Club, time spent at their private retreat is not just coming home; it’s coming home to the open arms of a large, extended family.

Tucked into the lush landscape of Cashiers, North Carolina, The Chattooga Club represents the epitome of refined Southern living ensconced within an authentic mountain ambiance. The exclusive private club offers its members a unique blend of luxurious amenities, impeccable service, and access to the breathtaking natural beauty that defines the Blue Ridge Mountains. From its inspiring origins to the diverse array of activities it provides, the Chattooga Club is a haven for those seeking a harmonious balance of elegance and outdoor splendor — spent with friends who feel more like family.

Founded in 1988, the club has deep roots in the history of Cashiers. Owner John Rivers, a Charleston native, sought to create a retreat where members could escape the rigors of everyday life and immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of the surrounding mountains. However, the towns of Cashiers and Highlands already featured several private clubs — mostly centered around their golf courses — and Rivers wished to create something distinct and unique.

Inspired by a vacation to the United Kingdom, where he and his wife witnessed firsthand the English enthusiasm for croquet, Rivers determined to bring the game to his mountain home away from home. The Chattooga Club was conceived as a private croquet club, and so began the origins of croquet on the HighlandsCashiers Plateau! Over the years, numerous other local clubs followed suit, with croquet gradually becoming one of the area’s favorite pastimes. In fact, Rivers himself progressed from novice to skilled player after founding his own club!

True to the founder’s vision, The Chattooga Club places deep emphasis on outdoor activities and engagement with the natural environment. The main building’s architectural aesthetic seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings, creating an atmosphere of timeless elegance. The surrounding grounds are meticulously maintained, and members frequently hike or drive up to Mac’s View, a park-like setting atop a hill with a breathtaking long-range view of Whiteside Mountain and the rolling hills beyond it.

Today, The Chattooga Club has evolved to provide additional amenities for its members while retaining its commitment to serving as an exclusive sanctuary.

New General Manager Michael Krause came on board at the club in September 2023 and enthusiastically shares his love of the community and his new home. Originally from Munich, Germany, Krause has spent over forty years managing resorts in Switzerland; Palm Beach, Florida; Hilton Head Island; and other hotspots throughout the Southeast. In search of cooler summer temperatures, Krause and his wife discovered Cashiers.

IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT WHEN THEY ARRIVED AT THE CHATTOOGA CLUB. KRAUSE EFFUSES, “IF THERE IS A SLICE OF HEAVEN IN THIS WORLD, THIS IS IT!” IN ADDITION TO THE WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE AT THE CLUB ITSELF, KRAUSE BROADLY COMPLIMENTS THE COMMUNITIES OF CASHIERS AND HIGHLANDS.

Asked what makes The Chattooga Club unique, Krause reiterates that the people are the essential components of any community. “The members here are like one big extended family. Every summer, they’re not just going on vacation to the mountains. They’re coming home to unwind and spend time with family.”

Indeed, Krause’s description of the club’s dining area does remind one of a large family gathering. While the building hosts both indoor and outdoor dining, members clamor for the outside tables. With a view of the croquet lawn and Chimneytop and Rock Mountains providing a stunning backdrop, it’s easy to see why. The scene appears straight out of a Hollywood set.

Krause proudly points to a table in the center of the outdoor dining area. “In the summer, our club florist creates an enormous display here. The

flowers change weekly, and everyone loves seeing the new arrangements. It’s one of those special touches that makes this place truly magical.”

Magical is certainly a fitting word. Every detail at The Chattooga Club appears carefully curated, creating an experience that sweeps members off their feet and away from the world outside its gates.

Experiences supply another crucial element of club life. Throughout the season, from late April through November, club management endeavors to provide members with an itinerary that keeps them busy yet feels rejuvenating to the body and spirit.

Social life is vibrant at The Chattooga Club, with members crowding into The Bear Bar — an affectionate moniker styled after the enormous stuffed bear over the fireplace — for drinks and lively conversation on just about any evening throughout the season. “You almost can’t walk in here sometimes,” laughs Krause. “They pack in here like one big, happy family. Everyone greets you as you walk through the door, and it’s just like a family reunion night after night.”

That social atmosphere extends to the dining room, where The Chattooga Club’s chefs impress diners with exquisite meals during lunch and dinner throughout the season. The kitchen churns out a steady schedule of wine dinners, guest chef experiences, and themed evenings. At the end of the season, members gather for a sumptuous Thanksgiving feast.

Situated on 200 secluded acres with about 80 private homes within the gates, The Chattooga Club operates on a by-invitation basis, but members come from all over the HighlandsCashiers Plateau. A meeting with real estate broker Linda Pridgen feels every bit as comfortable as the Blue Ridge Mountain community she calls home. Her love of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau becomes evident as she shares her knowledge of the area, and a long career in education, club management, and real estate lends her warmth and an engaging character. Those are the qualities that allow Linda to connect with clients, help them define their goals, and turn their visions of a mountain home into reality.

It would be easy — and perfectly enjoyable — to chat with Linda for hours on end. But as we discuss her time on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau and her 20-plus years working in real estate, her depth of experience and knowledge come into focus. Aside from developing her career — first in education, then in private club management, and finally in real estate — Linda has devoted much of her life to church activities, developing deep personal connections, and volunteering in the community.

WHAT’S YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND, AND WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO WORK IN REAL ESTATE?

“Originally, I was a school teacher in Vero Beach, Florida. I loved working with children, especially first graders. They’re like little sponges, just soaking up everything around them. During the school year, we lived down there, but we would spend part of our summers up here. My son and three grandchildren are based in the Orlando area. Back then, we had a condo in Sapphire Valley and would enjoy a few weeks of cooler air and the relaxed pace of life in the mountains each year.

But one summer, we decided to stay longer. My husband was offered a job at one of the private clubs, so we stayed for the entire summer instead of just a few weeks. And in the meantime, I got a job at the same club. I left at the end of the summer and returned to Florida when the school year started, but then I got a call from the club. They wanted to train me so that I could take over the General Manager

position in a few years. It was a tough call because I loved teaching, but we decided to move here full-time.

Eventually, I needed to get my real estate license to sell properties within the club community. So I’ve been a real estate broker for over 20 years, but about ten years ago, I decided to branch out and sell real estate in more areas around the Plateau.”

REAL ESTATE CAN BE AN EXCITING CAREER ON THE HIGHLANDS-CASHIERS PLATEAU. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK WITH SILVER CREEK?

“I had a few different opportunities, and they were all great options. But I had talked to Jochen a few times, and he invited me to come on board with Silver Creek. I saw what they had to offer, and it was just a very clear and obvious choice. Jochen’s passion for real estate and dedication to excellence intrigued me, and the way everyone at Silver Creek works together is so positive and inspiring. I’m excited to continue working here and grow as much as possible.”

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME WHEN YOU’RE NOT MEETING WITH CLIENTS AND SELLING REAL ESTATE?

“I’m very active in my church — The Church of the Good Shepherd — and I just started volunteering at The Bazaar Barn, which the church owns and runs with volunteers. It’s an upscale resale shop where all the goods are donated, and the proceeds go back into the community. So it’s a great cause and a lot of fun because we receive many very nice items in the store, and I enjoy meeting the friendly customers who shop there.

Living in Chattooga Club, I’ve developed a passion for croquet. We have Wine and Wickets every Wednesday during the season, and during the cooler months, a group of us gather in Florida for a week. This year we played in Ponte Vedra Beach.

I also attend any event involving music, like local concerts and shows at the Highlands Performing Arts Center. I’ve attended the

Highlands Chamber Music Festival in the past, and it was wonderful.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR ON THE PLATEAU? WHAT ARE THE EVENTS THAT YOU MOST LOOK FORWARD TO EACH YEAR?

“Oh, definitely fall! It’s beautiful any time of year here, but fall is absolutely the best season. The Festival of Trees around the Thanksgiving holiday is my favorite annual event. It benefits Summit Charter School, and it’s so much fun to sell trees, wreaths, and other holiday decor at that time of year. It really gets you into the holiday spirit.

I also enjoy the Groovin' on the Green events during the summer. I love that we can head over to the Village Green in Cashiers, hear some live music, get a snack from the food trucks, relax in the big open meadow, and enjoy time with friends. Everyone is there, and it’s so entertaining and social.

Every year I attend the Designer Showcase, which is a wonderful opportunity to view some of the most exquisite interior design in the Southeast. I’m also in charge of organizing the annual Author Talks at our local public library.”

WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO GO WHEN YOU HAVE TIME TO TRAVEL?

“I’ve traveled to California numerous times, and I love it because of how diverse the state is. San Diego, San Francisco, and the wine country area

are some of my favorite spots, and yet all so different from one another.

A few years back, I went to Italy with my friend, who is from Italy and lives there part-time and here part-time. I remember the first day we arrived, she saw that I had brought a hot roller set to do my hair every morning. She told me, ‘You won’t have time for that,’ and bought me some clips for my hair instead. She was right! We packed so much activity into every day that I barely had time to sleep each night before we were off on another adventure. The food was incredible, but I didn’t gain an ounce because we were walking everywhere and having such a fantastic time. I can’t wait to go back!”

IF YOU MET WITH NEW CLIENTS TODAY LOOKING FOR A HOME ON THE PLATEAU, HOW WOULD YOU APPROACH THAT PROCESS?

“The first thing I would do is sit down, talk to them, and get to know them personally. We have an incredibly diverse range of communities here, between gated neighborhoods, those with golf courses, lakeside homes, more secluded, rural properties, and a range of price points. Some people feel strongly about Highlands, while others want to be in Cashiers, Sapphire Valley, or Glenville. So, I get to know my clients first and become acquainted with their expectations, lifestyle, hobbies, and what they want to accomplish in their new home.

That helps me narrow down our options. But then we need to get out and visit these communities so the clients can get a feel for life here on the Plateau. I familiarize them with all of our amenities here on the Plateau, like our waterfalls, hiking trails, golf courses, tennis courts, and croquet. Usually, new clients will decide that a particular area feels like the perfect fit for them, and then we can focus on finding their new home.

Often when we’re out viewing a number of homes, we stop at Buck’s, our local coffee shop at the crossroads. It’s a great way to get a feel for the town. In fact, a few years ago, I sold a home to a client because he was so impressed by the friendly vibe there. As we sat sipping our coffee and chatting about real estate, several people stopped by our table to say hello and meet the newcomer. My client said he had never

experienced such an outgoing and personable community before, and he made an offer on a house that same day. ”

WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE THING YOU HAVE LEARNED WHILE WORKING AS A REAL ESTATE BROKER?

“Some real estate transactions can be very straightforward and smooth, while others can be trickier to navigate. One of the most unique deals I brokered was a residential home plus a lot for a commercial business, all on the same property together. That deal felt complicated, but we got it done! I learned if you’re determined and stick with it, you can accomplish almost anything.

I’ve also learned that finding and purchasing the right home can be a very personal and emotional experience. You might be surprised at what

details appeal to people and how they attach to those details and make a decision. For example, I was touring some clients through a private neighborhood once, where they chose and purchased a property. Later, they told me that the moss growing on the rocks and gate by the front entrance was so beautiful that they instantly knew they had found their future home. We might only see moss, but they saw something unique that appealed to them personally.”

The atmosphere we foster here is so amazing! We have incredible people in these towns who are delighted to live here and participate in community events. It’s such a nice feeling to know you will see a friendly face anywhere you go. Everyone is always helping each other and supporting local efforts to create a wonderful place for all of us to live.”

“I’m ready to branch out further! In the past, I’ve sold houses all over the HighlandsCashiers Plateau, but I often specialized in a few specific neighborhoods. I’m ready to meet new people and explore more areas of our community. The main building, pottery barn, and surrounding grounds were established as a haven for truly experiencing — not merely viewing — the arts. In addition to the center’s ambitious schedule of exhibitions and artists-inresidence, opportunities abound for members and visitors to dive in and join the creative process. At The Bascom, art is a collaborative process, and everyone is invited to join.

Six acres of meticulously landscaped grounds, surrounded by breathtaking views of distant mountains, create an enchanting setting that soothes and inspires. Highlands locals and tourists often access the campus as a park, spending hours in the rejuvenating atmosphere. Sculptures dot the outdoor spaces, providing a seamless connection between art and the environment. Understanding the value of the outdoor space, Bascom staff have established a biennial schedule

to regularly rotate outdoor exhibits, keeping the grounds replenished with new and exciting works to capture the imagination.

Inside the main building, ongoing exhibits exemplify a dedication to diversity and innovation in the arts. Featuring local, national,

and international artists, the busy schedule — changing every few months — reflects the center’s commitment to keeping the community curious and engaged.

But at The Bascom, that curiosity and engagement takes members as far as their imaginations can reach. Viewing art comprises one significant element of the visitor experience; one might say that it’s a good starting point. But for those who desire an immersive experience, the opportunities don’t stop there. A generous offering of workshops, classes, and guest lectures provides numerous venues in which to follow inspiration, learn techniques from skilled instructors, and ultimately, create.

With a hefty regimen of community outreach, it would be fair to say that many of The Bascom’s activities happen well away from its physical location. Believing that access to art should never be limited, the passionate staff and dedicated volunteers focus their efforts on providing opportunities to all. The Bascom’s main campus forms the heart of the organization, but its arms reach deep into the community to embrace children, seniors, and residents of all backgrounds and levels of experience with art.

With programming extended to local schools, the Hudson Library, the Boys & Girls Club of the Plateau, and numerous

other organizations, area children benefit from extensive access to arts education, thanks to The Bascom’s Community Outreach Programs. The organization believes that “art is for everyone and should be accessible to everyone,” and to that end, many of their public programs are provided for free — thanks to funding from both public and private sources. Scholarship programs ensure that programs are open to all members of the community, regardless of age, background, or level of ability.

Executive Director Love, who supervises the outreach programming, lights up when he talks specifically about the impact on children. “The kids in our programs are so uninhibited and have such a joyful response. Sometimes they’re

a bit nervous at first, but we provide an environment where it’s safe to simply be themselves. They open up quickly, and they’re so excited to tell you who they are and show you their perspectives.”

The staff endeavors to offer children a variety of experiences in different media, from painting to sculpture to even printmaking and textiles. But the tactile experiences are often the most popular, with the kids enthusiastically crafting ceramics and then learning about the process of firing them in the kiln. At the library’s after-school program, lesson plans

often tie in with a featured book so that visual arts education supports literacy and vice versa.

In addition to outreach programs in the community, children are invited into the Bascom to continue their experiences. Homeschoolers frequently access the center as a source of arts education in a social setting, and numerous after-school and summer programs are open to all. “Some kids are a bit hesitant on the first day of class,” Love laughs. “But by the second lesson, they’re leaping out of cars and running into the building. They love the connection of making friends while creating together.”

That feeling of creative collaboration and emotional connection doesn’t stop in childhood, however. The Center’s outreach programs also extend to area senior centers as well as the Literacy and Learning Center of Highlands, which brings educational opportunities to both children and adults. Partnerships with other local organizations such as the Highlands Biological Station, International Friendship Center, and the Performing Arts Center help to embed the visual arts throughout the community. Teacher development workshops help Macon and Jackson County educators connect the arts with subjects like math and science.

The Bascom’s presence can even be felt around town. In Cashiers, outdoor sculptures installed at The Boys & Girls Club and Slabtown Plaza bring art into the community in unexpected ways. Local organization, Vision Cashiers, is currently collaborating with the Center to install two additional sculptures somewhere in the village (with that location soon to be announced).

And for members of the Bascom in particular, the lines between viewer and creator often become blurred in all of the best possible ways. While anyone is invited to join the Center’s workshops, members receive a discount and often fervently participate in educational opportunities. The ongoing collaboration with instructors and other students helps local artists develop their skills,

and many progress to participating in local exhibitions and special events. Some even find themselves featured in the center’s gift shop.

“Membership is often an entry point to participating in professional opportunities,” Love explains. The center becomes a second home for retirees who wish to explore their creative sides after long careers have ended. “Learning to create art gives the student a fresh perspective on the works they view at shows and on life in general. Before, perhaps you appreciated a landscape for its overall beauty. Now, when you look at the same landscape, you’re thinking about which colors you would use to reflect what you’re seeing, or you’re noticing how the light illuminates parts of the scene.”

“Learning about art helps you to see the world differently,” Love continues. “You see things more deeply, and you notice details that maybe you didn’t before. It’s really a process of finding yourself.”

Classes at The Bascom allow all interested persons, from beginning novices to the highly adept, to sharpen their skills. However, classes are not all about technique. Participants also find the

process of creating art to be therapeutic and benefit from the social connections formed there.

The center also sponsors numerous occasions for local residents to submit their work for review. Pottery shows in both July and October allow ceramics students to display and sell their work, and the Holiday Arts and Crafts Show in November invites local and regional artists to submit an application to participate.

During the Dahlia Festival in September, sponsored by the Highlands Historical Society, area gardeners can submit their best single blooms for exhibition and judging at the Bascom. A poster contest also invites everyone to submit their designs, with a reveal party held for

participants and the winner on the Thursday evening before the festival.

Collaboration — both between artists and within the community — defines The Bascom’s annual theme in 2024. Termed “Legacies,” this year’s programming seeks to celebrate the sharing of ideas and experiences between artists while encouraging the audience to interact with new approaches and techniques. When artists create, they leave a legacy that impacts us all and shapes our collective imaginations. Viewers who feel inspired to experience the hands-on process of making art will, in turn, impact the community in their own ways.

WITH LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENTS

Residents and visitors love the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau for its unique topography and tranquil lifestyle. But in a remote location, safety becomes of paramount importance. In addition to stunning landscapes and a wealth of entertainment and dining options, the Plateau is blessed with abundant resources to promote the security and well-being of its residents. Among those resources are the fire departments of Cashiers, Toxaway, and Highlands, whose stations and substations are strategically placed throughout the area to ensure rapid responses to fires and other emergencies.

The village of Cashiers welcomed its primary fire station on Frank Allen Road in 1967. Prior to that, the town’s fire truck was housed in the Shell station in town. Throughout the years, five substations were added in Sapphire, Glenville, and Yellow Mountain, at Blue Ridge School, and on Breedlove Road next to the Chinquapin development. This year, the completion of Station 7 near the Wade Hampton Golf Club will supply aid convenient to the south side of town.

WITH 11 FULL-TIME AND 16 PART-TIME FIREFIGHTERS, PLUS A ROSTER OF 25 VOLUNTEERS, THE CASHIERS-GLENVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT COVERS ONE OF THE LARGEST FIRE DISTRICTS IN NORTH CAROLINA AT 135 SQUARE MILES. EVEN STILL, PLANS FOR ADDITIONAL SERVICES AND EQUIPMENT ARE IN THE WORKS. THE DEPARTMENT RECENTLY PURCHASED LAND ACROSS THE STREET FROM THEIR

CURRENT LOCATION IN THE HEART OF CASHIERS, WITH HOPES OF CONSTRUCTING A NEW STATION IN THE NEAR FUTURE. NEW BUDGETS ARE DETERMINED EVERY FOUR YEARS, AND THE NEXT, IN 2025, WILL DECIDE THE FATE OF A POSSIBLE NEW STATION ALONG WITH THE ADDITION OF A TWELFTH FULL-TIME FIREFIGHTER.

The Cashiers-Glenville fire department works closely with the local emergency medical response team, the opposite-named GlenvilleCashiers Rescue Squad. Each service supplies aid to one another as needed. The construction of a new Rescue Squad building on Highway 64 will soon allow increased EMS presence in Cashiers.

Fire Chief Randy Dillard, who has served in his current position for 38 years, shares a proud heritage with the town he calls home. His grandfather, Frank Allen, was once the sheriff of Jackson County and inspired the name of the

road where the primary station was built. Born and raised in Cashiers, Dillard plans to retire here, too.

“I wouldn’t trade this town for anything in the world,” he says. Cashiers-area residents truly are protected by one of their own.

Although it lies in Transylvania County, the Lake Toxaway Fire Department offers automatic mutual aid to Cashiers, as well as covering a substantial area of their own (over 70 square miles). The Toxaway fire district extends from the Jackson County line east to Silverstein Road on Highway 64, north on Highway 281 to the Jackson County line, and south on Highway 281 to cover Gorges State Park.

The primary Toxaway station and one substation employ four full-time firefighters, with 37 parttimers and volunteers providing additional assistance. The Toxaway department responds to calls for Cashiers, and vice versa, allowing for a breadth of services to protect residents and visitors of both districts.

“Although Panthertown lies in Jackson County, there is one part of it that extends just slightly into Transylvania. So when a call comes in from Panthertown, we respond too,” Deputy Chief Bobby Cooper explains. “We also cover Gorges State Park, which encompasses 7500 acres, plus the US property around Rainbow Falls.”

The department responds to all fires, but a portion of its work also focuses on incidents within the area’s numerous hiking trails and campgrounds. Ongoing training allows firefighters to develop the unique skills necessary for rescues within

both house fires and wilderness emergencies. In 2016, Transylvania County mourned a record six deaths due to accidents around waterfalls, and accidents occur near these landmarks annually.

To the west of Cashiers, the Highlands Fire Department serves a district roughly 70 square miles in size, including the township of Highlands and its surrounding rural communities. Eight full-time, two part-time, and 26 volunteer firefighters share a mix of training and specialties that allow the department to respond to medical emergencies, search and rescue operations, and, of course, structure fires. The department responded to 730 total calls in 2023.

“We even rescued a cat from a tree recently, just like on TV,” Chief Ryan Gearhart chuckles.

Like all other area fire departments, the primary Highlands station and its substation on Cashiers Road provide automatic aid to other nearby districts, including Cashiers, Scaly Mountain, Cullasaja, and Satulah, for structure fires, brush fires, and other major incidents.

In addition to securing the safety of Highlands’ citizens and visitors, Gearhart and his staff provide educational outreach to schools and daycares. Local children from preschool through third grade visited the brand-new fire station last year, demonstrating their fascination with the station’s six fire trucks and, of course, every child’s favorite — the fire pole. They learned fire prevention tips and what to do in the event of a fire, and many left with dreams of becoming firefighters someday.

FM 104.5. Once you meet Chris, you’ll certainly never miss him again, as his 6’9" stature literally makes him stand above the crowd.

Chris was born in Germany and grew up in Washington, D.C. After studying at Georgia Tech and graduating from the University of Maryland, Chris moved to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where he lived for 22 years. In Canada, Chris worked as an on-air talent on numerous radio stations. He moved to Highlands in 2017 to take the job at WHLC. “I moved to the mountains to become the voice of Highlands, little did I know how much the HighlandsCashiers Plateau would speak to me.”

An avid cook, Chris attended Le Cordon Bleu, receiving a Certificat de Traiteur, and loves sampling all the culinary delights the HighlandsCashiers area has to offer. Chris quickly fell in love with the Plateau and decided he wanted to help other people enjoy our beautiful nature and live in our truly unique and amazing community. While he’s no longer on the air, Chris still gets behind the mic as the in-game P.A. announcer for Highlands High School basketball games.

Rick starting purchasing his own investment property in the Atlanta area. His interests in real estate lead him into the Cashiers and Sapphire Valley market, and he obtained his North Carolina Real Estate License in 2014.

The Lake Toxaway, Cashiers, and Sapphire Valley areas have always been a huge draw for Rick and his family. Since the mid-90s, Rick and his family knew that one day they would like to own a second home where they could escape the heat and bustle of Atlanta. After enduring numerous long and frigid winters, the allure of his boyhood summer home proved too strong and they moved permanently to the Highlands-Cashiers area a few months later.

When not advocating for the Plateau lifestyle with his clients, Kevin is an avid outdoorsman and can be found hiking with his beautiful wife, playing a round of golf or tennis, and enjoying phenomenal food at one of the area’s local restaurants. Kevin is also a member of the Trillium Links & Lake Club and enjoys playing with the men’s tennis group and has recently begun dabbling in the increasingly popular sport of croquet. Kevin’s wife, Lindsey, serves the community as a Nurse Practitioner, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, at Highlands Dermatology. In April of 2023, Kevin and Lindsey welcomed their first child, Kenneth Richard Koach. Baby Kenny already displays enthusiasm for life on the Plateau, and enjoys exploring the area with his parents.

Born and raised in Sarasota, Florida, Kevin was fortunate enough that his family escaped the heat and humidity of Southwest Florida summers and vacationed in the cool mountain air of Western North Carolina. Raised in Dublin, GA, Katie Adams Nicholson graduated from college and moved to Atlanta in 2000. In search of mild temperatures and a place to unwind, Chuck Self made his first visit to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau more than 20 years ago on a summer getaway with his family. During that short visit, Chuck realized that Western North Carolina was where he wanted to be. The desire for the mountain lifestyle led him to search for property in the area for several years until he found the perfect piece of land on which to build a dream home.

Brothers Television in Atlanta, before parlaying his corporate experience and skills into real estate more than a decade ago. A University of Missouri alumnus, Chuck is perennially one of the top real estate brokers on the Plateau.

When he’s not helping clients, Chuck enjoys hiking, golfing, fitness activities, cooking, reading, and boating on Lake Glenville. RAY TRINE BROKER

Ray Trine’s passion for all things real estate blossomed early in his life. After graduating with an accounting degree from the University of North Florida in 1971, he immediately launched his real estate career. Initially employed by Florida National Bank’s holding company, he later became CFO of American Federal Savings and Loan, financing homes and commercial properties and working on building and development projects. By 1982, the Trine family included five children, five dogs, and four cats. Once ensconced in the mountains, Ray wasted no time earning his North Carolina Broker’s license. He went to work for one of the oldest real estate firms in the area, V.C. Smith Real Estate, which he bought outright two years later. He soon

made his mark as the #1 real estate office in sales and listings in the Cashiers area for many years running. Ray proceeded to shape the area with his active involvement in the sale of land tracts, as well as the development of many residential communities such as Bald Rock, Summer Hill, Glenshore, Trillium Links & Lake Club, Bear Lake Reserve, Bridge Creek, Glen Laurel, and Glen Pointe.

With such a large family, community involvement was also important to Ray. He has been president of the Blue Ridge School PTA, elected to the Jackson County School Board, and served on the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Lake Glenville and many private community boards and architectural review committees.

Coupled with his dedicated community involvement, Ray’s background in accounting, property development, and real estate sales has provided him with priceless insights into this unique area. However, one could argue that those definitions represent merely outward expressions of a concept that is challenging to define. In 2023, the concept of Quiet Luxury made headlines in the fashion world. Publications such as Vogue , InStyle , and Harper’s Bazaar lauded Quiet Luxury with descriptions ranging from an understated, minimalist

fashion trend to a brilliant marketing scheme. All agreed that the central tenets of Quiet Luxury include a preference for quality craftsmanship, quality over quantity, and an absence or at least softening of logos.

“QUIET LUXURY IS THE OPPOSITE OF LOUDLY BRANDED LUXURY,” EXPLAINS ALAM KHAN. “IT IS WHAT IT IS NOT THAT DEFINES ‘QUIET LUXURY’ — IT IS NOT LOUD, IT IS NOT BRASH, IT IS NOT OVERTHE-TOP. QUIET LUXURY IS DEFT EDITING OF THE EXTRANEOUS TO SHOWCASE THE CORE VALUES AND QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT OR SERVICE.”

Fashion brands such as Loro Piana, Brunello Cucinelli, Gabriela Hearst, and The Row epitomize the concept of Quiet Luxury. An adherence to exceptional quality, combined with an absence of obvious logos, lends their pieces a lush and

Historically, the cyclical nature of fashion always reflects shifts in economic and societal values. While the foundational principles of Quiet Luxury endure with time, the term itself emerged as a response to the 2020 pandemic and resulting economic fallout. With a substantial portion of the population suffering in a myriad of ways, including financially, many luxury buyers responded by tactfully concealing their wealth. Those who tended toward Quiet Luxury did so

intuitively, understanding that obvious signaling of wealth could be viewed as insensitive or even gauche as the economy floundered.

Moving beyond fashion, the tenets of Quiet Luxury began to influence other areas of design, such as home interiors and even vehicles. “Quiet luxury at home is reflected in muted colors, tasteful interiors, soft fabrics, proportional design, and just a general calmness and elegance in the interior and exterior spaces,” Alam Khan explains.

But is Quiet Luxury really a trend? Forbes Magazine argued that Quiet Luxury was nothing new, newly described ; while the terminology was recently coined, the concept of exclusive experiences, intimate connections with products, and timeless statements of style have pervaded consumerist culture for centuries.

Alam Khan concurs. “The concept of Quiet Luxury has been with us for generations. It is typified by the absence of logos and branding on the products and the use of lush materials and pastel colors. Quiet Luxury is more of a mindset and life-stage, and a general feeling of confidence that you don’t need logos or obvious indicators of the product’s provenance to prove that you’ve made it.”

Indeed, back in 2009, Rolls-Royce anticipated the rise of Quiet Luxury after analyzing fluctuations in consumer preference. The carmaker, which typically epitomizes an image of more opulent — one could say “loud” — luxury, realized a portion of its customer base sought a more refined and less obviously flashy model than their flagship Phantom car. “So it developed the Ghost model, a toned-down version with plush interiors and a streamlined palate geared for owners to self-drive the car and not their chauffeurs,” Alam Khan recalls. “I remember the then-CEO described the RollsRoyce Ghost as ‘post-opulent.’”

Naicker expounds upon the idea that Quiet Luxury represents a re-defining of enduring values. “The interesting thing with this concept is that this has always been the buying ethos of ‘those in the know’ whether you are a discerning

ultra-wealthy clientele or a seasoned luxury professional.” Quiet Luxury is nothing new, but the term is.

QUIET LUXURY, THEN, REPRESENTS NOT A TREND BUT A HONING OF THE VERY DEFINITION OF LUXURY. WHILE THE AESTHETIC OF UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE IS AS OLD AS FASHION ITSELF, THE WAYS IN WHICH WE NAME AND DESCRIBE SUCH CONCEPTS TEND TO SHIFT OVER TIME. WHERE DO WE GO FROM THIS MOMENT, AND HOW MIGHT THE DEFINITION OF LUXURY CONTINUE TO EVOLVE IN THE FUTURE?

Naicker responds, “Looking ahead, my view is that this philosophy will continue to impact the industry, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future, particularly within sustainability and ethical consumption.”

Perhaps we’ve only just explored the edge of luxury, with so much more to be discovered as we venture onto this frontier.

In recent years, both designers and consumers have turned their attention toward the sustainability of materials, reflecting a greater awareness of one’s environmental footprint and a concern for the future. This aspect of the collective consciousness dovetails nicely with the Quiet Luxury of the moment, promising to drive product design and buying behavior in the future. A preference for quality materials and longevity of design puts fast fashion, and all of its brash wastefulness, on the back burner.

In Europe, and particularly in France, public concern is mounting over cheaply produced items from online fast fashion retailers. Representing the antithesis of Quiet Luxury, mass-produced articles of clothing and accessories appeal to momentary shopping impulses but hold no enduring appeal or quality. Quickly discarded after one season or when shoddy materials fail, fast fashion contributes to mountains of nonbiodegradable waste within public landfills.

According to Brune Poirson, the French Minister of Ecological Transition, the equivalent of two Eiffel Towers of unsold clothes and shoes end

up in landfills every year. Even more items are tossed after only a few uses. While the problem persists worldwide, France leads the way in creating solutions, with the public turning away from cheaply produced fashion. More and more of the overall citizenry expresses an interest in sustainable sourcing, quality craftsmanship, and transparency in the supply chain. These are elements of luxury adopted by the mainstream.

Growing awareness of sustainability in fashion has fueled a resurgence of interest in vintage clothing — potentially opening the market of luxury goods to a wider market. Those with an eye for enduring quality can scoop up timeless pieces for a fraction of their former prices while investing in items that resonate with them personally. Naicker, who has observed the rise of vintage fashion, describes it as “not just a passing

phase but a fundamental shift toward a more conscious, intentional approach to luxury — one that resonates with those who seek individuality and positive social impact in every carefully chosen piece.” Buying less but of higher quality is preferred over reckless excess.

Guests feel free to relax and make themselves at home in a way that you can’t do in a restaurant.”

Or if you hope for a menu that is themed toward a holiday or a particular type of food, I can do that too. Some clients see a meal in a magazine that appeals to them, and we put together a beautiful spread of food based on a photo or recipe.”

A personal chef endeavors to bring the vision of his client to life. “If you need a bartender specifically to mix drinks for your guests, I can hire one. “Some clients really enjoy the whole process of seeing a meal come together, and they want to increase their own culinary knowledge,” Cooper reports. “It’s not always formal dinner parties with guests in the dining room only. Some clients want to watch me cook and ask questions during the process. And it becomes a fun interactive experience for everyone”

Positioned a hop, skip, and a jump away from Wells Hotel — or perhaps just a short walk for those who imbibe — Whiteside Brewing Company serves up a variety of house-made beers, selected ciders, and cocktails along with delectable American pub fare.

As the name implies, guests who dine al fresco can take in a view of Whiteside Mountain from their seats. And outdoor options do abound at this brewery, where the setting provides as much enjoyment as the beer itself. In addition to the indoor dining room, guests can choose from tables on a covered, heated deck; underneath the pavilion in full view of the stage; or even the meadow where children play during the day and firepits often burn at night. AS OF JUNE 2021, THE BREWERY HAS PRODUCED ALL OF ITS BEERS ONSITE, WITH BREWER RYAN GLENN PRODUCING AN ECLECTIC MIX OF LAGERS, ALES, STOUTS, AND MORE. THE MENU INCLUDES A VARIETY OF BREWS WITH INCREDIBLY DIVERSE FLAVOR PROFILES, AND THE STAFF WORKS TO CREATE NEW OPTIONS SEASONALLY.

THE PERFECT COMPLEMENT

While the brewery focuses on crafting excellent drink options, the food menu is designed to perfectly complement the local libations. Options center around classic American pub fare like wings and sandwiches but with stylish twists such as the Brussels Stouts, Pretzel Bites, and Sweet Potatoes and Goat Cheese appetizers.

A focus on high-quality ingredients prompted restaurant management to seek out Providence Farmstead beef, from which all burgers are created on-site. Orders placed on Monday are packaged and shipped on Thursday so that the weekend’s burgers are the freshest available anywhere in the region.

Other notable standouts include the pub’s own twist on the Reuben sandwich — the Rachel — and jumbo chicken wings tossed in your choice of sauce. Try the stout chili sauce for something uniquely delicious. The Mother Hen, Whiteside’s version of a fried chicken sandwich, is rumored to be a local favorite.

SPECIAL EVENTS

With its expansive property and festive atmosphere, White Brewing serves as the ideal hotspot for celebrations and local events. The pub can be rented for private parties, and the large meadow provides plenty of room for outdoor celebrations. During the busy season from Spring to Fall, guests are treated to a variety of live music acts — from authentic bluegrass tunes to classic rock favorites — on the pavilion stage.

On February 16, 2024, the brewery hosted its first annual Winterfest, a festival celebrating regionally-produced beers. For a single admission price, participants sampled beers from Whiteside plus featured brews by six different independent breweries from around the Western North Carolina region. Held the night before the local Outhouse Races, Winterfest promises to become a local favorite event in years to come.

ELEVATED FOOD TRUCK

Located in the parking lot of Whiteside Brewing Company, the Elevated Kitchen food truck supplies additional satisfying food options. Guests at The Wells Hotel can meander through the property’s meadow and grab enormous cat head biscuits, burritos, and other breakfast favorites featuring fresh, local ingredients.

Recently, Elevated has expanded its menu to provide lunch on selected days and a fun Chinese food menu on Wednesday evenings. The truck also provides tempting grub during special events at the brewery, helping to relieve the primary kitchen and reduce wait times for hungry pub-goers. For updates on their menu offerings and specials, patrons should follow the Elevated Kitchen page on Facebook. Online ordering is

available so that customers can conveniently pick up their food on the go.

A FOCUS ON COMMUNITY

A favorite hangout for locals, Whiteside Brewing Company endeavors to give back to the community it calls home. Local non-profit organizations frequently host the pub’s Trivia Nights, with a portion of profits donated directly to them.
