A LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER & CEO

The season has only just begun, and already we’ve helped clients close on an impressive number of properties across the Plateau. Whether working with buyers or sellers, our focus remains clear: strategic guidance, meaningful relationships, and exceptional outcomes. Through our added efforts in identifying both listed and off-market opportunities, we’re helping our clients find — and secure — their ideal place in the mountains.

May and June mark the unofficial start of our season here, as fresh blooms appear, daylight lingers longer, and our towns begin to hum with renewed energy. Local clubs are opening their doors, welcoming members back to lush fairways, tennis courts, pickleball courts, croquet lawns, and lively social gatherings. It’s a time of reconnection, renewal, and return.

At Silver Creek Real Estate Group, our work has always extended beyond real estate. We see ourselves as stewards of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau — committed not just to helping people buy or sell property, but to sharing the lifestyle and natural beauty that make this place truly special. NC Living is one of the ways we do that.

In that same spirit, we’re proud to introduce the first edition of The Plateau Guide — a comprehensive, 188-page resource designed to help residents and visitors alike navigate life on the Plateau. From lakes and trails to clubs, dining, services, and safety, it’s the most complete guide of its kind. To receive your copy, reach out to any broker on our team — we’d be happy to share this extraordinary new resource with you.

In this issue, we’ve curated the full summer lineup of music and performing arts events across the Plateau, from symphonies under the stars to intimate local performances. You’ll also find our feature on the iconic Saratoga Jazz Festival, a must-experience event for any music lover, as well as a piece highlighting some of the world’s most breathtaking concert halls — destinations worthy of adding to your travel list.

As always, NC Living is designed to inspire. Whether you’re flipping through for travel ideas, exploring architectural highlights, or simply soaking in the seasonal mood, we hope you find something here that resonates.

Thank you for being part of our world. Wherever this issue finds you, we look forward to crossing paths on the Plateau in the months ahead.

REST, RITUAL, AND THE LUXURY OF LIVING IN THE MOMENT

IN A WORLD THAT SEEMS TO SPIN EVER FASTER, AN IRISH SLEEPWEAR BRAND STANDS AS A BEACON TO THE TIMELESS NEED FOR REST, REJUVENATION, AND SELF-CARE. MOON + MELLOW IS A LUXURY SLEEPWEAR LABEL FOUNDED BY CLIONA (CLÍODHNA IN IRISH) O’BRIEN, A MOTHER OF THREE ACTIVE BOYS. HER LIFE IS A DELICATE, CHAOTIC DANCE BETWEEN THE HIGH-ENERGY DEMANDS OF HER FAMILY AND BUSINESS AND THE QUIET, STOLEN MOMENTS OF CALM THAT ARE, AT TIMES, HARD TO COME BY. YET, IT IS THESE MOMENTS, THESE POCKETS OF STILLNESS, THAT HAVE SHAPED HER PHILOSOPHY, ALLOWING HER TO WEAVE THEM INTO THE VERY FABRIC OF MOON + MELLOW.

Moon + Mellow is an extension of Cliona’s deep-rooted connection to nature, heritage, and motherhood. Each thread tells a tale of the quiet power of self-care, with an enduring belief that true luxury resides in simple, restful moments that allow us to reconnect with ourselves and the world around us.

Cliona’s story, deeply rooted in Ireland with family summers spent in the Irish countryside and sun-soaked days on the Mediterranean coast of Cyprus, shaped the woman she has become: a mother, designer, and proud Irish entrepreneur charting a course in the luxury sleepwear market with a unique perspective on renewal, connection, and rest’s transformative power.

FROM IRELAND TO CYPRUS: THE ROOTS OF COMFORT AND LUXURY

At the age of four, Cliona’s family made the move from Ireland to Cyprus, where the influences of both cultures shaped her view of the world. She spent long summer days outdoors riding horses in Wexford or exploring the sun-kissed beaches of Cyprus, breathing in the fresh air and feeling the earth beneath her feet. “That simplicity, that quiet, was a gift,” she says. “Cyprus was where I first learned to understand the tactile world around me. I would run my fingers through silks and soft cottons in the fabric stores on the Turkish side of the island. The sensation of textures, the weight of them — it was something that stayed with me.” It was in these early years that Cliona’s deep love for fabrics began to take root. A silken ribbon, a crisp cotton, the comforting wool of Irish blankets — each became a symbol of comfort and connection. This love for texture and the sense of connection it offers shaped her understanding of comfort and luxury, which later blossomed into the design aesthetic of Moon + Mellow. Growing up, Cliona’s family home was filled with treasures from their travels, such as a Turkish rug, Greek artwork, and copper trinkets, and these everyday objects were often the most meaningful. “It’s the quiet, everyday objects that carry the most meaning — the ones that make you feel at home, that make you feel connected to the earth,” she reflects. This philosophy of simplicity and connection is at the heart and soul of Moon + Mellow — and it remains woven into the fibers of the company’s sleepwear today.

THE POWER OF REST: DESIGNING FOR THE BUSY MOM

It wasn’t until Cliona became a mother, though, that she truly understood the transformative power of rest — which is less about indulgence and more about necessity. “Motherhood, especially in those early years, changes you in ways you don’t expect,” she says, her voice softening as she reflects on the whirlwind nature of raising three boys. “When Ethan, my first son, arrived, I wasn’t prepared for how much time I would spend caring for him — how little sleep I could manage and still be expected to function,” Cliona says with a laugh, her eyes lighting up at the memory. But she also came to a deeper, more profound realization. The busyness of motherhood, with its demands and sacrifices, opened her to the idea that rest isn’t about indulgence; it’s about recovery and rejuvenating yourself so that you

can give to others with authenticity. “That’s when I realized — rest isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity. It’s not a selfish thing. It’s how you’re able to show up as your best self. Motherhood changes you in ways you don’t expect. When you’re running on empty, how can you possibly give your best? And that’s when I started to realize — creating moments of calm is absolutely essential. It’s what keeps you grounded.” These small moments of pause — whether it’s a few minutes of stillness in the morning or a calm moment at night — became Cliona’s sanctuary. “Slipping into soft, comfortable sleepwear was my way of recalibrating,” she explains, smiling. “I wanted to share that sense of peace with others, particularly with young mothers who often feel like they are running on fumes. I wanted them to have a chance to pause, to breathe, and to reconnect with themselves.”

This philosophy is embedded in every piece of sleepwear Cliona designs. The name Moon + Mellow reflects this ethos. “The moon reminds me to slow down,” she shares. “To embrace the quiet beauty of nighttime, to find stillness, and to create space for moments of rest, even if they’re fleeting.” For Cliona, it’s not simply about

CLIONA O’BRIEN, FOUNDER OF MOON + MELLOW. COURTESY OF MOON + MELLOW MOONANDMELLOW.COM

creating something beautiful to wear but about inviting a lifestyle that values slowing down, taking a breath, and embracing the magic of everyday moments.

While it is about sleepwear, it is more about reclaiming space for rest in a world that constantly demands more. The selected fabrics are chosen for their beauty and the sensations they evoke — the crispness of fine cotton, the gentle embrace of soft linen. Each piece is an invitation to unwind, let go, and immerse yourself in the richness of simplicity.

THE IRISH HEART OF THE BRAND: MYTH, CRAFT, AND CONNECTION

The magic of Irish mythology runs deep through the heart of Moon + Mellow. The graphic prints in the Legends collection draw heavily from the magic and mysticism of Irish mythology. The jellyfish prints, octopus motifs, and delicate representations of mythical creatures evoke ancient stories of the “Children of Lir,” Tír na nÓg,

and even Clíodhna, the goddess of the sea, after whom Cliona is named.

“The Irish myths, with their rich symbolism and magical qualities, have a timelessness,” Cliona says. “Each print and design element is a tribute to that sense of wonder. I wanted to create sleepwear that was about comfort as much as about connection — connection to something larger, something timeless.” This intuitive understanding of connection is deeply rooted in Cliona’s Irish heritage. “Ireland has always celebrated the power of meaningful connection,” she explains. “It’s about creating something with intention, with a sense of mysticism, and with authenticity.” This belief is carried through every Moon + Mellow piece — whether it’s a hand-painted print or the careful stitching that goes into each item. The brand’s ethos is built on this profound sense of groundedness, inviting customers to experience not just beautiful sleepwear but a connection to something bigger: to heritage, to family, and to self.

CREATING WITH CARE: SUSTAINABILITY FROM THE HEART OF IRELAND

One of the cornerstones of Moon + Mellow is a commitment to ethical production and sustainability. From the beginning, Cliona has been committed to creating with intention and care, ensuring that her brand’s environmental and ethical values are upheld.

This commitment to sustainability is reflected in every aspect of the brand, from the choice of materials to the production process. The fabrics used — whether organic cotton or breathable linen — are chosen both for their beauty and their environmental responsibility. “We wanted to build a brand that values premium materials, sustainability, and responsibility,” Cliona says. The brand partners with suppliers who share her commitment to ethical practices, ensuring that each piece of sleepwear isn’t just luxurious but also made with respect for the environment and the people involved in the process.

A LEGACY OF REST, REJUVENATION, AND THE IRISH SPIRIT

Looking ahead, Cliona remains firmly committed to her mission of offering luxurious sleepwear that nourishes both body and soul. The brand’s core philosophy revolves around the understanding that rest is not a luxury but a necessity — and one that every woman deserves. True luxury is not about chasing perfection or striving for more. It’s about being present in the moment, embracing the quiet, and allowing yourself the grace to rest. Through Moon + Mellow, Cliona has created a sleepwear brand rooted in the quiet beauty of the Irish countryside, the mystical rhythms of the moon, and the sacred space that self-care provides.

In a world that often values busyness over balance, Moon + Mellow serves as a much-needed reminder that rest isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.

And in the soft embrace of Moon + Mellow sleepwear, we can all reconnect with ourselves and find our own sanctuary.

ESTABLISHING SOCIAL CONNECTIONS IN OUR COMMUNITY

word S by dawn lile S
photography by courtney pratt

We’ve all heard that “sitting is the new smoking,” but both the World Health Organization and the U.S. Surgeon General have also recognized social isolation and loneliness as significant risks to both our mental and physical well-being.

According to the National Institute on Aging, “Everyone needs social connections to survive and thrive. But as people age, they often find themselves spending more time alone. Being alone may leave older adults more vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation, which can affect their health and well-being. Studies show that loneliness and social isolation are associated with higher risks for health problems such as heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline.”

Perhaps you just moved to the Plateau or are living here seasonally or even full-time but haven’t found “your people” yet. We’re here to help with suggestions on how to plug in and establish connections in our community.

RESOURCES AND IDEAS FOR GETTING INVOLVED

Peggy Pepper, an entrepreneur who founded several businesses, including Positive On Purpose and Peggy Pepper Home, has lived all over the U.S. and abroad. She and her husband fell in love with the Plateau and made Cashiers their full-time home in August 2024. “We wanted someplace we could live and experience the beauty of nature in all four seasons,” explains Pepper. “I have never

met friendlier people than we have met here. Everyone has been welcoming and warm. There’s a kindness here that is really special.” With that kind of attitude, it’s no surprise Pepper has already gotten involved in the community and met new people while staying connected with friends from their last home in Dallas, Texas.

Pepper and her husband joined the Crossroads Society, a group of Cashiers’ citizens who make essential annual contributions in support of Vision Cashiers and its initiatives. She’s also been a Pilates devotee for many years, so she wasted no time starting classes with teacher Alex Warren at Pilates of Cashiers.

One of Pepper’s biggest pieces of advice, particularly to newcomers, is to engage with people, not just in your neighborhood, but with the hard-working people at our local restaurants, shops, and grocery stores. Her favorite question to ask is, “I’m new here. What is not to be missed?”

She’s gotten helpful feedback on where to eat, where to shop, and the most scenic hikes and places to see, such as a flower farm in Franklin that has become a favorite of Pepper’s. She is thankful to the people who work to make our town a special place to live, and she lets them know she’s grateful. “Thanking someone is a serotonin producer for both the giver and the receiver,” says Pepper.

Spreading this kind of goodwill helps strengthen our community and is an easy way to feel more connected. The social media and websites for the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce and the Highlands Chambers of Commerce are a great place to start. They are full of information about activities in our area where you’re sure to connect with others. Plus, here are a few more ideas to help you feel more at home.

Animals provide companionship and often lead to interactions with other people. The many dog-friendly restaurants or dog parks around town are great places to engage with fellow animal lovers. Visit the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society to see if an animal companion is right for you.

GET MOVING

Meeting others with similar interests is another idea to help you feel at home. Try a class at Pilates of Cashiers or Fusion Yoga & Wellness, both located in Cashiers, or head

to the Cashiers/Glenville Recreation Center to explore fitness and athletic interests. The center offers a wide variety of group fitness classes for all levels of physical activity as well as pickleball.

ENGAGE YOUR NEIGHBORS

Many local restaurants have live music on most weekends during the spring, summer, and fall. Happs Place and Whiteside Brewing Company are great places to start, as both have lively bar areas where you can pull up a chair and strike up a conversation with a fellow patron.

CONNECT SPIRITUALLY

Faith-based groups or activities are a great way to get involved. There are nearly 20 churches and houses of worship in our area, serving many denominations.

TAKE AN ART CLASS

The Bascom: A Center for the Visual Arts offers lectures and art classes in a variety of mediums. Their offerings include

workshops, ongoing classes, private lessons, Open Studio packages, field trips, demonstrations, and community classes designed to meet the needs of artists of all skill levels.

EXPLORE LOCAL RESOURCES

The Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library hosts many events and programs. The Cashiers Senior Center provides a broad range of activities and services for seniors living in the southern area of Jackson County. The center provides nutritious lunches, Meals on Wheels, social activities, arts and crafts, health promotion, field trips, and more.

LEADERSHIP CASHIERS AND LEADERSHIP HIGHLANDS

Leadership Cashiers and Leadership Highlands offered are leadership development programs that empower individuals to enhance civic knowledge, build leadership skills, and create meaningful connections. By inspiring dynamic leadership, these programs foster leaders committed to the growth and collaboration of their communities.

• HIGHLANDS VOLUNTEER FAIR

The Highlands Volunteer Fair is an excellent way to discover how you can make a difference. Hosted by The Highlands Chamber of Commerce/Visit Highlands, NC, this free, drop-in event will take place on Thursday, June 12, from 11am to 2pm at the Highlands Community Center. Attendees can explore meaningful volunteer opportunities by connecting with representatives from various local nonprofits, asking questions, and learning how their time and talents can

contribute to the community. Whether you’re looking for a one-time role or a longterm commitment, there’s something for everyone.

• PEGGY CROSBY CENTER

The Peggy Crosby Center is a nonprofit organization whose mission and steadfast commitment are to provide wellmaintained and comfortable office spaces for nonprofit organizations and small startup businesses. Their tenants provide much-needed assistance to those living in our local community and in Western North Carolina, and many need volunteers to help run their programs.

• THE VILLAGE GREEN

The Village Green is a 13.2-acre park in the heart of Cashiers, located at the crossroads of Highway 64 and Highway 107. It receives no regional, state, or federal funding and relies solely on the generosity of our community.

REFINED APPALACHIAN CUISINE IN LONESOME VALLEY

IN THE HEART OF THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS, A DINING DESTINATION OF UNMATCHED BEAUTY SERVES REFINED APPALACHIAN CUISINE. CANYON KITCHEN, LOCATED IN LONESOME VALLEY, OFFERS DINERS AN UNPARALLELED CULINARY EXPERIENCE FRAMED BY THOUSAND-FOOT GRANITE CLIFFS, VERDANT FORESTS, AND ROLLING MEADOWS. IT’S A MAGICAL PLACE THAT BLURS THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN INDOORS AND OUTDOORS, WHERE SOPHISTICATED AND TANTALIZING DISHES CELEBRATE LOCAL INGREDIENTS AND OUR PLATEAU’S RICH AND ABIDING HERITAGE.

The story of Canyon Kitchen began over a century ago. In 1895, E.H. Jennings purchased over 35,000 acres of land in western North Carolina, spanning what would later become known as the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. Throughout the 20th century, the Jennings family served as careful stewards of this land, paring it down to 800 acres. Then, in 2005, the newest generation of Jennings — Sally, Dick, and Binford — made a pivotal decision. Rather than allowing outside developers to determine the fate of their beloved valley, they chose to establish their own community, and Lonesome Valley was born.

Lonesome Valley is a luxury mountain development that offers amenities such as lake access, hiking trails, gardens, recreational facilities, and Canyon Kitchen. Housed in the rustically elegant Jennings Barn, the restaurant preserves architectural history while also creating something new. The renovated barn creates a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere, and opening the accordion-style walls reveals gardens at the foot of Cow Rock Mountain, allowing diners to feel immersed in the landscape as they dine within the largest box canyon in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Described as “one of the most beautiful restaurant settings in the country,” the experience begins before visitors even enter the building with a feast for the eyes. Guests are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy a drink in the garden, soaking in the awe-inspiring views of the towering granite cliffs that frame the green, green valley.

Executive Chef Ed Selle leads the culinary program at Canyon Kitchen, crafting a menu that tells the story of North Carolina through each carefully composed plate.

Take the smoked trout deviled eggs, for example, a dish that transforms a Southern picnic staple into something extraordinary. The trout comes from Sunburst Farms, which is a connection that runs particularly deep at Canyon Kitchen, as it’s the first commercial trout farm in the Southeast, having been founded by Dick Jennings 76 years ago. The delicate smoke of the trout balances perfectly with the richness of the deviled yolk, while the giardiniera relish adds brightness, and the pickled okra contributes a distinctly Southern accent.

The restaurant’s Cheerwine braised short ribs also exemplify Chef Selle’s ability to weave regional icons into fine dining. Cheerwine — North Carolina’s cherry-flavored soda created in Salisbury in 1917 — is reduced into a complex glaze that caramelizes around the fork-tender beef. The dish is anchored by creamy Carolina Gold rice — a heritage grain that once dominated Southern agriculture before nearly disappearing in the early 20th century. This thoughtful combination turns a simple braise into a celebration of North Carolina’s culinary comeback.

For a true taste of the region’s agricultural bounty, nothing surpasses the restaurant’s collard greens. This humble side dish receives reverent treatment at Canyon Kitchen, where

the greens are slowly braised with Benton’s bacon from neighboring Tennessee. The smoke from the bacon, the mineral richness of the greens, and the subtle heat from the pot liquor create a side dish that rivals any main course in its depth of flavor and cultural significance.

Much of the restaurant’s herbs and produce come directly from Canyon Kitchen’s gardens, while most ingredients are sourced from nearby farmers markets, local farms, and Carolina coastal waters. Such commitment to seasonal and local ingredients ensures the menu evolves throughout the year and always reflects the best of what the region has to offer.

While Canyon Kitchen welcomes nonresidents, securing a table requires planning, as the restaurant books up quickly, making reservations essential. Although Lonesome Valley community members receive priority, others can secure reservations by calling well in advance. For those without reservations, there’s limited seating in the bar area, though this option doesn’t guarantee the full Canyon Kitchen menu or experience.

This balanced approach — exclusive enough to maintain an atmosphere of specialoccasion dining yet accessible enough to allow newcomers to discover the restaurant — has helped Canyon Kitchen build its reputation as one of North Carolina’s premier dining destinations.

The restaurant has recently welcomed Jim and Denice Dunn as its new co-general managers.

After retiring from Camp Merrie-Woode, where they served as co-executive directors for 20 years, the Dunns were looking for a new challenge that would allow them to continue working together.

“The opportunity to job share the general manager position at Lonesome Valley wound up being the perfect fit for our experience and interests,” they explain. “We are very excited to be joining the incredible Lonesome Valley team and this unique community focusing on family, nature, and simplicity.”

The Dunns are arriving at an exciting time, as they’ll be overseeing the completion of Canyon Kitchen’s renovation and expansion, including the addition of a new patio bar. This enhancement will serve small plates and beverages while patrons enjoy the beauty of the meadows, gardens, and the box canyon. They’ve joined a strong culinary team led by Executive Chef Ed Selle and newly appointed Food & Beverage Director Dimitri Giannoulis, who have assembled a group of professionals dedicated to providing exceptional service in what the Dunns describe as “this most unique and breathtaking setting.”

“After 20 years beneath Old Bald, we feel blessed to be able to continue our efforts on the Cow Rock side of the mountain,” the Dunns reflect, underscoring their connection to the region.

As Canyon Kitchen continues to evolve with these new leaders and current renovations, it remains true to the Jennings family’s original vision: a place that honors the past while embracing the future, celebrates the natural beauty of western North Carolina, and welcomes both residents and visitors to share in something truly special. Canyon Kitchen offers not just a meal, but a destination — a place where food, history, and landscape come together in perfect harmony.

Lonesome Valley, with its thoughtful design and connection to nature, has drawn residents and visitors alike to its timeless charm. Silver Creek Real Estate Group has played a key role in this, introducing numerous clients to the unique lifestyle Lonesome Valley offers while also assisting those looking to transition by selling their properties. This harmonious partnership reflects the shared commitment to preserving the valley’s legacy and fostering a vibrant community. For more information, visit NCLIVING.COM

Jazz lovers will be treated to the unmistakable velvet baritone of Gregory Porter, the spellbinding presence of Cassandra Wilson, and a wave of boundary-pushing artists such as Cory Wong, Lettuce, and DJ Logic & Friends. For those who crave a touch of the legendary, the Al Di Meola Acoustic Band, the Michel Camilo Trio, and Kenny Garrett return to remind us why jazz, at its core, is a genre of eternal reinvention.

And for the chic, forward-thinking jazz connoisseur? Rising stars such as Veronica Swift, Nicole Zuraitis, and Julius Rodriguez will ensure the festival is as much about the future as it is about the past.

BEYOND THE BEATS

The Saratoga Jazz Festival isn’t just about the music — it’s a full-on sensory experience. Between sets, dive into a food vendor village that’s practically a festival of its own, serving up everything from smoky barbecue and oysters to wood-fired pizza and vegan delights. Need a refresh? STAY

A meticulously restored Gilded Age masterpiece, the exquisite Adelphi Hotel is, hands down, Saratoga’s finest residence. Opening in 1877, this landmark is where prominent politicos rubbed shoulders with 19th-century power players. Located downtown, its spacious, Gatsby-esque suites are the perfect place to unwind after a long day hitting the high notes.

Visitors can call into the on-site Luxe Med Spa for an aesthetic treatment or pampering facial or battle it out over billiards and board games in the smart games room. Round off your evening with a filet mignon at the Adelphi Hotel’s farm-totable steakhouse Salt & Char before savoring a cheeky bourbon-infused Smoke Show cocktail at Morrisey’s Lounge.

For more information, visit theadelphihotel.com.

WELLNESS

Saratoga is, of course, famous for its legendary, mineral-rich springs. Wellness is a big deal in the city, so punctuate your stay with a visit to its healing waters. Since 1935, the Roosevelt Baths & Spa has been the place to experience the town’s therapeutic spring water. Back in the 1940s, a three-week stay at the Roosevelt Baths & Spa was considered the norm and included 21 mineral baths, accessory treatments, regulated diet, rest, exercise,

and recreation. While that lengthy stay may be out of the question for you, definitely make a reservation for a day’s blissful soak in the historic hydrotherapy mineral baths.

For more information, visit gideonputnam.com/ roosevelt-baths-and-spa.

SHOPPING

Saratoga’s shopping scene is where high-end meets hometown charm. Start your spree on Broadway, where boutiques such as Piper, Violet’s, and Lifestyles offer everything from hand-picked designer fashion to jewelry and accessories. For art connoisseurs, Spa Fine Art Gallery and Crafters Gallery feature beautiful local works and artisan gifts. After all that shopping, take a pit stop at the French-style and ultra-quaint Mrs. London’s Bakery for raspberry macarons and café au lait.

HORSE RACING

Renowned for its horse-racing heritage, Saratoga Race Course kicks off its season on July 3, with its 40-day Saratoga Summer launching fully on July 10. So, if you’re a fan of the fillies, it’s a great idea to bookend your jazz festival visit with a day at the races. Enjoy the excitement of worldclass thoroughbreds competing under the sun, all while indulging in the elegance of Saratoga’s racing tradition. Got kids in tow? Don’t miss the Breakfast and Breeding Farm Tour, which includes a buffet breakfast during morning training, a guided walking tour of the farm, and same-day admission to Saratoga Race Course.

Jonathan’s journey to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau began at Western Carolina University, where he met his wife, Hannah. When the pandemic hit in 2020, the couple returned to a region that had always felt like home — choosing to settle where they could raise their family and feel truly connected.

Embracing his role as a husband and father to Walker, Jackson, and Hallie, Jonathan supported Hannah as she pursued her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), all while building a successful, relationship-focused business and staying actively involved in the community. He believes that community is built through participation, not observation. “That’s just what we do here on the Plateau: we show up, give our time, and help make our community stronger.”

Jonathan’s dedication to service is evident in his roles on the Highlands-Cashiers MLS Board and his local Homeowners Association board. He also coaches youth sports, living out his belief that leadership is grounded in being present and consistent.

Jonathan approaches his work through a valuesbased lens that integrates faith, family, personal

growth, financial stewardship, and professional excellence — a holistic mindset that supports both personal balance and exceptional client service.

His guiding principles — Serve Others, Earn Everything, Grow Constantly, Win Together, and Always Representing — shape every interaction. “I carry these principles and my family’s values with pride — not just sometimes, but always.”

Peers respect him not only for his work ethic but also for his integrity. As one broker noted, “Jonathan is one of the most impressive brokers I’ve worked with in the past 20 years.”

“With the backing of Silver Creek,” Jonathan explains, “I’m able to offer a personalized experience for buyers and give sellers a strategic marketing advantage that gets results.”

For Jonathan, success is defined by the relationships he builds and the lasting impact he makes in the lives of his clients. As he embarks on this new chapter, his mission remains clear: “To serve people authentically and compassionately, acting as a trusted guide through each milestone of their real estate journey.”

In search of mild temperatures and a place to unwind, Chuck Self made his first visit to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau more than 20 years ago on a summer getaway with his family. During that short visit, Chuck realized that Western North Carolina was where he wanted to be. The desire for the mountain lifestyle led him to search for property in the area for several years until he found the perfect piece of land on which to build a dream home.

Intended to be a second residence until Chuck's retirement, the home soon took precedence; the lure of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains inspired him to say “goodbye” to the intense pace, traffic, and heat of Atlanta when construction was completed. And so, the simplicity and splendor of full-time mountain living began.

A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Chuck enjoyed a successful sales career in the television and entertainment industry, experiencing multiple relocations and finishing as vice president of sales for Raycom Sports in Charlotte and Warner Brothers Television in Atlanta, before parlaying his

corporate experience and skills into real estate more than a decade ago. A University of Missouri alumnus, Chuck is perennially one of the top real estate brokers on the Plateau.

When he’s not helping clients, Chuck enjoys hiking, golfing, fitness activities, cooking, reading, and boating on Lake Glenville. Currently, Chuck serves as the President of the Blue Ridge School Education Foundation. He is a member of the club at Lonesome Valley and Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

He went to work for Florida National Bank’s holding company and later became CFO of American Federal Savings and Loan. Ray quickly obtained his North Carolina license and went to work for one of the oldest real estate firms in the area, V.C. Smith Real Estate. Two years

later, in 1984, Ray bought the firm outright and soon became the No. 1 real estate firm in listings and sales in the Cashiers area –an accolade held for many years. MILL e MIGLIA

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL — AND THRILLING — RACE IN THE WORLD

word S by patricia laurent

THERE ARE RACES, AND THEN THERE IS LA CORSA PIÙ BELLA DEL MONDO — THE MILLE MIGLIA. WINDING THROUGH THE BREATHTAKING ITALIAN COUNTRYSIDE, THE MILLE MIGLIA IS A THOUSAND MILES OF PURE ADRENALINE, WHERE HISTORY AND HORSEPOWER COME TOGETHER IN A SPECTACULAR TRIBUTE TO MOTORING’S GOLDEN AGE. THIS LEGENDARY RACE, WHICH BEGAN IN 1927, ISN’T JUST ABOUT GETTING FROM BRESCIA TO ROME AND BACK AGAIN. IT’S ABOUT PASSION, HERITAGE, AND THE KIND OF ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCE THAT CAVALIER ADVENTURERS CRAVE — FOLLOWING IN THE TIRE TRACKS OF LEGENDS, NAVIGATING THE SAME HAIRPIN TURNS, COBBLED STREETS, AND SUN-DRENCHED COUNTRYSIDE THAT HAVE WITNESSED SOME OF THE MOST EXHILARATING MOMENTS IN MOTORSPORT HISTORY.

A RACE BORN OF PASSION AND PRESTIGE

The people of Brescia have fuel running through their veins — at least, that’s how the old saying goes. By the late 19th century, the city was already Italy’s original motorsport mecca. It hosted some of the earliest automobile races in Europe until, in 1922, the Italian Grand Prix was relocated to Monza. This slight was so intolerable and so utterly offensive to the local racing aristocracy that four men — Giovanni Canestrini, Franco Mazzotti, Renzo Castagneto, and Aymo Maggi — convened in a Milanese apartment with one mission: to reclaim Brescia’s racing glory. What they envisioned was not an ordinary race but a 1,600-kilometer pursuit from Brescia to Rome and back, with no stops or frills — just speed, an open-road battle against time, terrain, and fate itself. The name came naturally: Mille Miglia, Italian for “Thousand Miles,” was a nod to the grueling distance. And so, on March 26, 1927, with engines revving and the scent of gasoline thick in the air, the firstever Mille Miglia edition roared to life.

FOR 30 YEARS, MILLE MIGLIA WAS THE ULTIMATE TEST OF MAN AND MACHINE, ATTRACTING THE WORLD’S BEST DRIVERS AND THE MOST CUTTING-EDGE CARS. IT WAS CHAOS. IT WAS MADNESS. IT WAS PERFECTION — A SPECTACLE OF GRIT AND GRANDEUR THAT SAW COMPETITORS BATTLING THROUGH TORRENTIAL RAIN, THICK FOG, AND DUST CLOUDS FROM UNPAVED ROADS. ALFA ROMEO, FERRARI, MASERATI, AND MERCEDESBENZ BATTLED FOR DOMINANCE, WITH LEGENDARY NAMES SUCH AS TAZIO NUVOLARI, STIRLING MOSS, AND JUAN MANUEL FANGIO MAKING HISTORY ON THE UNFORGIVING ROADS.

Moss’s 1955 run remains the stuff of legends. With navigator Denis Jenkinson by his side, the British driver tore through the course in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, setting an unbreakable record: 1,000 miles in just 10 hours, 7 minutes, and 48 seconds, averaging an eye-watering 157 kilometers per hour. Even today, it’s considered one of the greatest feats in motorsport history.

Mille Miglia was never for the faint of heart. It was beautiful, yes — but it was also deadly. Narrow mountain passes, high-speed straights,

and bustling town centers made for a chaotic mix of thrill and peril. The 1957 race proved to be its undoing when a crash involving Spanish aristocrat Alfonso de Portago’s Ferrari killed the driver, the co-driver, and nine spectators. The tragedy forced officials to shut down Mille Miglia as a speed race forever.

REBIRTH AND RENAISSANCE: THE GENTLEMAN’S RACE

For two decades, the Freccia Rossa (Red Arrow) symbol lay dormant. But in 1977, Mille Miglia was revived — not as a raw speed showdown but as an exclusive, invitation-only event and a highoctane celebration of classic cars. It became a regulatory rally — one that still demands precision, endurance, and a deep reverence for automotive history, with only cars that raced between 1927 and 1957 (or their exact models) eligible to enter. Today, the streets of Italy once again echo with the thunder of prewar Alfas, Maseratis, Jaguars, Aston Martins, and, of course, the most heartstopping Ferraris ever built.

Every spring, as dawn breaks over Brescia, the city awakens to an electric hum of anticipation. The streets, once silent, now tremble under the weight of automotive royalty — vintage Ferraris, Bugattis, Alfa Romeos, and Jaguars, their polished bonnets

reflecting the golden hues of the Italian sun. And as the flag drops, these mechanical masterpieces unleash their fury, tearing through the familiar route that carves across Italy’s most picturesque landscapes — Brescia to Rome and back — 1,000 miles of pure, unrelenting passion.

While it’s no longer about outright speed, competitors must maintain precise average times at each checkpoint, making it as much about strategy as driving skill. But the essence remains untouched: More than anything, the Mille Miglia is about the joy of the journey. It’s about experiencing Italy as it was meant to be seen: from behind the wheel of an automotive work of art, with the wind in your hair and the road stretching endlessly ahead.

THE PRICE OF GLORY

Despite its romance, the Mille Miglia is not for the fainthearted. Four days. Sixteen-hour drives.

Ancient roads that test both driver and machine. The journey is as much about resilience as it is about beauty. The challenge is as much mental as it is mechanical. Drivers fight fatigue, unfamiliar roads, and the sheer unpredictability of driving a 70-year-old car at breakneck speeds through uncertain terrain.

Yet, ask any participant why they endure it, and they will speak of moments that transcend mere driving. A sunset drive through the Tuscan hills, the sky painted in shades of gold and crimson. The camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts, sharing stories over espresso in a quiet piazza. The sound of a perfectly tuned engine echoing through an ancient mountain pass. These are the experiences that make the Mille Miglia truly extraordinary.

MORE THAN A RACE: THE MILLE MIGLIA MYSTIQUE

For those who take part, the Mille Miglia is more than a race — it is an experience, a rite of passage into one of the most exclusive circles in the automotive world. Entry is fiercely competitive, with collectors, connoisseurs, and racing enthusiasts vying for a coveted place on the starting grid. The costs? Astronomical. The exhaustion? Immense. But the rewards? Unparalleled. It’s a sensory overload and a journey through time. A Bugatti Type 35B, with its engine oil hot, its exhausts roaring, the wind whipping through its open cockpits, and its deep-blue livery glistening under the Italian sun as it carves through winding roads as effortlessly as it did in the 1930s. Gullwing, with its iconic doors rising like the wings of a mechanical angel. A Ferrari 250 GT Boano, with its V12 growling in harmony with the rolling hills of Tuscany. By the time you reach Brescia, having conquered 1,000 miles of pure, unfiltered passion, you’re both exhausted and exhilarated. For enthusiasts, it’s like living history, still racing, still conquering the same landscapes that made them legends.

These aren’t museum pieces; they are living, roaring, fire-breathing works of art, driven at speed through landscapes that have changed little since Leonardo da Vinci sketched them. Many of these cars are worth north of $10 million, yet their owners — industrialists,

WHY THE MILLE MIGLIA STILL CAPTIVATES

In an era of hypercars and electric vehicles, why does a race featuring 90-year-old cars still capture the world’s imagination? Because Mille Miglia is more than just a motorsport event — it’s an emotion. It’s the thrill of open-road adventure, the romance of old-world craftsmanship, and the intoxicating blend of speed, history, and spectacle.

It’s the only race where a 1930s Alfa Romeo can steal the show from a brand-new Lamborghini. Where billionaires, racing legends, and vintage car aficionados rub shoulders over espresso in a sleepy

Hollywood stars, royalty — drive them as they were meant to be driven, embracing the challenge, the unpredictability, the sheer visceral thrill of the race.

Beyond the cars, there are the stories — tales of owners rediscovering their vehicles’ pasts, of long-lost family legacies reunited by the very machines that once carried them to glory. Take, for example, the story of a 1955 Ferrari 250 GT, once raced by an Italian driver whose son, now in his seventies, was invited to ride along in his father’s car. As they crossed the finish line, the past and present merged in a moment of pure Mille Miglia magic.

And then there’s the rise of women racers. In an event that once epitomized cigar-chomping, oil-slicked masculinity, a new wave of female drivers has brought fresh energy to the race. Women such as Katarina Kyvalova, a collector and founder of the Bentley Belles, now power their way through Italy’s roads with the same fearless spirit as their legendary predecessors.

Italian piazza before roaring off into the sunrise. Where the spirit of the original gentleman racers — those fearless pioneers who drove without helmets, seatbelts, or even proper roads — still lingers in the air.

AN ULTIMATE BUCKET-LIST EXPERIENCE

For those who can, Mille Miglia is a must. It’s an invitation into an exclusive club, a chance to be part of a century-old legacy, to live — if only for a few days — in a world where time slows down and the road ahead stretches endlessly into the horizon.

So, would you do it? Would you trade comfort for chaos, ease for exhilaration? Would you strap into a priceless piece of history, put pedal to the metal, and chase the Red Arrow across the heart of Italy?

If you have the means, the passion, and just a little bit of madness — the answer is simple: Sì, Mille Miglia!

A NOSTALGIC JOURNEY THROUGH THE MILLE MIGLIA AND CLASSIC CAR RALLIES, WITH FRENCH LAWYER AND UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR

YVES, WHEN DID YOUR LOVE FOR CARS BEGIN?

Since I was a child, I have always loved cars. My father was the same, and I remember him bringing home his company’s Chevrolet truck, painted white and blue. It is still clear in my mind. Our first family car was a 1952 Goliath, a German car with a small two-stroke engine and a heavy body — very slow but impressive to look at! But the car that truly made an impression on me was my neighbor’s Lancia Aurelia B20. He used to take his daughter and me to school in it, and to this day, I believe it is one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH RACING?

Yes, very well. It was in 1958, at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. My father took me to see it, and I watched the great drivers of the time — Fangio, Hawthorn, and Maria Teresa de Filippis, the fastest woman in racing. Tony Brooks won that race in a Vanwall. I was completely fascinated, and from that day on, I knew that racing would always be part of my life.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST CAR AND YOUR EARLY DRIVING ADVENTURES.

My first car was a little 1951 De Rovin with a 500cc engine and scooter wheels. I bought it for 50 francs when I was 16. It wasn’t fast, but it gave me freedom! I spent my days racing it on dirt roads near my parents’ house — until one day, I crashed it into a tree.

When I turned 18, I got my driver’s license, and the very next weekend, my best friend and I took his mother’s Fiat Neckar 850 on a road trip through the Alps. We drove it as fast as we could, sliding through every turn. Looking back, I realize how lucky we were not to crash. We were young and fearless!

HOW DID YOU START COMPETING IN RALLIES?

Rallying is an expensive hobby, and I had to wait until I was 25, when I became an assistant professor, to afford my first race. It was in a Simca Rallye 2, and I had a great co-driver, Eric. We trained hard, and it paid off — we finished second in our class!

Unfortunately, my work as a lawyer took up most of my time, and I rarely had the chance to race again.

PHOTO COURTESY OF YVES HUYGHÉ DE MAHENGE

But there were special moments, like in the 1980s when I competed twice in the Monte Carlo Rally. The first time was with my English colleague, Mark Freeman, in 1985. It was his first race, and we didn’t finish due to mechanical problems. But Mark loved it so much that today, at 82, he is still racing his 1963 AC Cobra!

HOW DID YOU GET THE CHANCE TO DRIVE IN THE MILLE MIGLIA?

In 1997, while working in Italy, one of my clients — a Brescian banker — told me he was entering the Mille Miglia with his 1955 Ferrari Barchetta. His bank was a main sponsor, and he was involved in organizing the race. When I told him about my love for classic cars, he invited my wife and me to join as his guests.

My Porsche 356, a 1961 model, was too new to qualify, but I was allowed to participate as an official following car, with the number 00. It was incredible — driving at full speed behind beautiful Alfa Romeos from the 1920s, with a Mercedes 300 SLR right behind us! Everywhere we went, people were cheering — schoolchildren waving flags, old ladies clapping from their chairs. We crossed through historic cities like Gubbio, Parma, and Ravenna, and at night we arrived in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, where each car drove onto a podium under bright spotlights, filmed live on Italian television. It was unforgettable.

YOU ALSO RACED IN THE GIRO DI SICILIA AND THE TARGA FLORIO. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?

It was an amazing adventure. My childhood friend Etienne, who had filmed a previous edition of the rally, convinced me to join in 1999. My wife and I drove our Porsche 356 from Provence to Genoa, where we took the ferry to Palermo with the other competitors. That night on the ferry was unforgettable — we stayed at the bar, drinking Campari and talking with other drivers until morning. By the time we arrived in Sicily, we were already good friends!

The rally itself was tough. The first stage was at night, and most of the cars had poor headlights. The final stage took us onto the legendary Targa Florio circuit — a dream of mine since I was a teenager. We pushed the Porsche so hard that we broke the gear lever! Luckily, a local plumber helped us fix it, and we managed to finish the race.

YOU HAVE COMPETED IN MANY MONTE CARLO HISTORIQUE RALLIES. WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK?

Monte Carlo is a special race. When they introduced the historic version in 1999, I had to enter. The first year, I drove my Alpine Renault A110, the same car that had won Monte Carlo in the 1970s. The race was exhausting — 900 kilometers through the Alps, with 24 hours of nonstop driving.

One year, we made a mistake with the tires and got stuck during a snowstorm. We had to turn back to find our support truck, and I drove like crazy to make up for lost time. But then, by chance, we found a long queue of rally cars also stuck in the snow, waiting for a plow to clear the road. That delay saved us — we made it to the next checkpoint just in time!

After many years, I decided to switch to a different car — a humble Auto Union DKW F12. It was much slower than the Alpine, but that made the rally even more exciting because I had to push the little car to its absolute limit.

YOU WENT TO GREAT EFFORT TO PREPARE YOUR DKW FOR RACING. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?

The DKW F12 was never meant to be a rally car, but I wanted to make it one. Through the DKW club, I heard about Gerhard Richter, a German mechanic who had worked with two-stroke engines for decades. My friend and I drove to his village in the Mosel Valley, where we found him living in a house full of old engines and spare parts.

At first, he was quiet, but when I told him I wanted to race my DKW in Monte Carlo, his eyes lit up. “If it’s for the Monte, I’ll do it!” he said. He rebuilt my car from the ground up, making it twice as powerful as before. Years later, we became a racing team — he built an identical DKW for himself, and we competed together in the 2014 Monte Carlo Historique.

AFTER SO MANY YEARS OF RACING, WHAT STILL EXCITES YOU ABOUT CLASSIC RALLIES?

I love everything about them — the cars, the roads, the people. I have raced on frozen lakes in Sweden, through the forests of England in the RAC Rally, and on the great circuits of Europe. But for me, the best cars are the rally cars of the 1960s and 1970s. They are just old enough to remind me of my youth but modern enough to be exciting to drive.

As long as I can, I will keep racing. I hope that even when I am 100 years old, I will still be driving through the mountains, chasing the thrill of the road.

SIMS VALLEY

At the turn of the 20th century, Willis and Laura Sims settled in a high valley with clear 40-mile vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains in the west. They built a rustic

mountain home, lived off the land, and raised their six children here. Today, the valley is home to Sims Valley — a unique mountain community built in the same spirit as the Sims family homestead. It is a place of beauty, a place for families, and a place where residents live in harmony with the nature that surrounds them. Located between the historic towns of Cullowhee and Cashiers, Sims Valley provides its homeowners with the feeling of living within a national park, rather than a resort community. Intersected by winding nature trails, designed by Trail Dynamics (who often designs for the National Park Service), Sims Valley offers many opportunities to let their residents’ spirits soar with the natural splendor that is housed within this one-of-a-kind property. The peaceful sound of cascading waterfalls, the exotic fragrance of mountain laurel and native wildflowers, and the awe-inspiring sight of the Smokies blend together for an exceptional outdoor experience.

Go shopping or dining in Cashiers or Highlands, explore Nantahala National Forest, take a boat ride on Lake Glenville, or enjoy the many amenities that Sims Valley has to offer.

The Sims family homestead still stands and now serves as a community gathering place. In fact, there is no shortage of places for the community to gather together at Sims Valley. The Mountain Clubhouse contains a fitness center and spa, swimming pool, large great room with fireplace, caterer’s kitchen, outdoor grill, and two outdoor fireplaces, paired with some of the most amazing views available at the property. The Mountain Chapel — located at the north end of the property — offers an open-air gathering place for Sims Valley residents to enjoy a picnic, a roaring fire in the outdoor fireplace, or a breathtaking vista of the valley and the mountains beyond.

HIGHLANDS’ OLDEST HOME

In 2025, Highlands is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founding by Samuel Kelsey and Clinton Carter Hutchinson, and the Highlands Historical Society is joining the celebration by featuring a new audio exhibit during its Season Opening Celebration on May 24. Built two years after the town’s establishment in 1877, the Prince House (later named for its last private owner, Elizabeth Wright Prince) is the oldest surviving residence in Highlands and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Prized by the Highlands Historical Society as its featured exhibit, the Prince House has been open for docent-led tours since 2002. While it has the “location, location, location” to make it prime real estate, and even some recent updates, the old home is certainly not for sale.

Built and owned first by Arthur T. House and his wife Sarah, the house was later home to Frank and Mary Boynton, Richard and Alicia Trapier, Frank and Annie Wright, Jim Wright, and others until 1935 when Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) Wright Prince, with the help of her brothers, transformed it from a private residence to the boardinghouse that she ran until 1967.

Lizzie’s time at the Prince House was filled with many difficult challenges stemming from the Great Depression, World War II, and weather-related hardships. Lizzie often said that she “grew up in a time of make do or do without,” and her life running the Prince House best exemplified this era in Highlands and American history. As a working single mother, Lizzie overcame many stereotypes of the time. Local genealogist Lawrence Wood described her as “extremely independent” and said, “She wanted no one to do for her; rather, she chose to do for others.”

THE PRINCE HOUSE

For nine dollars a week, her boarders could expect a bed, a warm place to sleep, and home-cooked meals — all provided by Lizzie. In addition to serving meals to boarders, Lizzie served Sunday dinners to locals after church services and sold pies out of her back door as a way to make additional money. The Prince House became a mecca for residents and seasonal visitors alike who flocked there for her fried chicken, fresh vegetables, rolls, buttermilk pie, and pound cakes. As Lawrence Wood described it, “She cooked all her food the old-time way. No mixes or instant foods were found in her kitchen.”

This year, the Highlands Historical Society has created a new QR-code-based audio tour to supplement the information that docents typically provide about the Prince House. The tour will allow visitors to use their smartphones to hear audio describing Lizzie’s use of the home as they walk from room to room through the Prince House, including how she met challenges on a day-to-day basis. Interviews with Lizzie Prince’s daughter-in-law, Ruby Crowe Prince, and grandson, James Prince, will provide family memories, which add first-person, historical context to the tour. In this case, the walls — or at least the rooms — literally will talk about the fascinating past they have witnessed.

The audio tour will be previewed by a new exhibit in the museum that outlines the history of the Prince House from the time it was first built to today. This exhibit will include a beautiful new painting of the Prince House by artist Paul Arsenault, who will be presenting an art demonstration during the Season Opening Celebration, depicting his unique artistic style and love for historical subjects.

The Season Opening Celebration will include many other exciting attractions for attendees. Local favorites Laney & Bishop with Charles Wood will provide their unique musical sounds that resonate from the past to the present. Speaking of the past, local actors portraying the ghosts of Highlanders past will enthrall visitors with stories from the early days of Highlands. Historical figures such as Helen Wright, Samuel Kelsey, Dr. Mary Lapham, and, of course, Lizzie Prince will be scattered throughout the Historical Village to regale visitors with their personal histories — embellished or otherwise.

No event is complete without food, and this one should not disappoint. Beginning at 11:30 a.m., there will be free hot dogs, drinks, ice cream, and popcorn while it lasts. The Center for Life Enrichment will also be on hand to promote their calendar of educational events for the summer. In addition, docents will be available to guide tours throughout the museum and to answer other historical questions.

The Season Opening Celebration is a free event and will be held on Saturday, May 24, from 10-4. For the day’s full schedule and further information, visit the Highlands Historical Society website at highlandshistory.com. The Highlands Historical Society is located at 524 N Fourth St. in Highlands and is open for the season beginning May 22 on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10-4 and on Sundays from 1-4.

WILL TRAVEL TENOR FOR

THE DRAMA OF THE OPERA CONTINUES TO CALL AUDIENCES INTO HISTORIC THEATERS ACROSS EUROPE

THE BOOMING ECHO OF THE BASS, A BARITONE’S BIG ARIA, TENORS IN PERFECT HARMONY, A LOFTY SOPRANO TRILL — THE SOUNDS OF THE OPERA HAVE CAPTIVATED AUDIENCES FOR CENTURIES; MANY WILL TELL YOU THE ART FORM IS SOMETHING YOU JUST FEEL. ADD TO THAT A BACKGROUND OF ORCHESTRAL EXCELLENCE, DRAMATIC PLOTLINES, FANTASTICAL SETS ON SWEEPING STAGES, OPULENT COSTUMES AND SOME OF THE MOST LAVISH THEATERS EVER BUILT, AND THE OPERA SIMPLY AWES.

“At its best, it is moving, transcendent, lifeaffirming,” says David Merritt, founder and president of Canada-based Aria Tours, which organizes opera-centric trips. “What could be better than sitting in the Met or La Scala in Milan or Teatro di San Carlo in Naples and hearing the best musicians and singers in the world perform some of the most sublime music ever created? It’s a gift to be able to experience it.”

An opera is drama through music — a play where the entire story is told through song. The word is actually the plural of opus, latin for the “work” of a composer, so an opera can be thought of as many of these works strung together. It has its roots in late-16th-

century Florence, Italy, where a group known as the Florentine Camerata tried their hand at recreating Greek dramas told through music. Jacopo Peri is credited with writing the first, Dafne, in 1597. All of Europe was feeling opera almost immediately — but they were still written only in Italian for nearly 200 years, later expanding to German, French and other languages. To put on such dramas, ornate sets were built and even more ornate opera houses constructed for the enormous stages required to hold them — and their audiences.

Opera composers became stars, their works still performed today and known by singular names to even those who don’t know opera. In the Baroque era, 1600–1750, it was George Frideric Handel (Aggripina, Rinaldo). In the classical period, 1750–1830, it was the one and only Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute). The Romantic period, 1830–1900, saw opera becoming grander than ever, thanks to Gioachino Rossini (The Barber of Seville, Cinderella), Richard Wagner (Der Ring des Nibelungen, Ride of the Valkyries), Giuseppe Verdi (La Traviata, Aida) and Georges Bizet (Carmen). In the 20th century, there was Giacomo Puccini (Madama Butterfly, La Bohème).

Opera super-fans in the 21st century travel to Europe, and elsewhere in the world, taking in hundreds and even thousands of performances.

“Some take five tours a year with me; one gentleman is at 35 tours now,” Mr. Merritt says of opera buffs’ dedication to the art. “I have many regular clients who are like opera Deadheads, the devoted followers of The Grateful Dead who frequently travel to see the band. Many travel to hear specific singers — Lise Davidsen is the current star du jour; others travel for specific composers, such as Wagner or Verdi.”

Many of Mr. Merritt’s regulars will attend any tour that includes a full cycle of Wagner’s Ring, a series of four operas with a total running time of about 15 hours, usually performed alone or together over four nights. The storyline involves gods, mythical creatures and other heroes all battling over a magical ring that grants ultimate power. “On my recent tour for the Ring in Zurich, one regular client announced he’d seen the fouropera cycle 30 times,” Mr. Merritt says. “Believe me, there are plenty of folks out there who’ve seen it twice as many times. The most famous iteration is in Bayreuth, Germany, each year in the opera house that Wagner had built to his specifications — including minimal padding on seats, the orchestra under the stage and no airconditioning, which can be interesting in August.”

Mr. Merritt’s personal favorites include those by Puccini. “Many opera aficionados will look down their nose at you if you say Puccini, but the music is undeniable,” he says. “I’m a sucker for melody, and Puccini is hard to beat. Verdi and Wagner took longer for me to ‘get,’ but hearing Nabucco at La Scala [in Milan] and Tannhäuser in Munich changed everything.”

The opera houses themselves can certainly enhance the whole experience, with must-see, often historic locales on every Operahead’s list, from the reconstructed La Fenice in Venice to the glorious Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, built in 1737. Across the rest of Europe, there are famed stages to be found in Paris, Vienna, Munich, Madrid, Zurich, Budapest, Valencia, London — nearly everywhere one can hear an overture wafting through the air.

Aside from performances, the sites of opera’s history beckon travelers, too. “The annual Verdi Festival in Parma is a pilgrimage, of sorts, for many,” Mr. Merritt says. “People want to see Verdi’s birth house in Le Roncole and Sant Agata, his country estate. I have special access to these sites, so it’s nice to be able to share that with clients. We also have special access at the Casa

di Riposo in Milan, where Verdi is buried. It’s a retirement home for musicians that he established in 1896, and it’s pretty special to hear the residents giving vocal or piano lessons to young students.”

This interest extends to singers, too, who are stars of the opera world in their own right, like the late, world-famous Luciano Pavarotti. “I’ve taken groups to the cathedral in Modena where Pavarotti used to sing with his father and to Pavarotti’s grave at Montale Rangone,” Mr. Merritt says. “These artists mean so much to my clients and these sites are sacred for them.”

Afficionados know putting an opera on is no small feat for the people behind the productions. And for an opera to really move the audience, all the pieces must work just right. “The orchestra has to be ‘on,’ the conductor has to treat the music and lead the orchestra perfectly, the staging — whether it’s traditional or modern — can’t distract or detract from the music,” Mr. Merritt says. “And then the music itself is so challenging that it’s hard enough for the singers to nail the performance, and they also have to act. The stars have to align for it to be A-one.”

These moments are what opera lovers travel for, usually preferring to see traditional productions of the classics, but even purists may be open to modernized staging and costumes, English subtitles and new interpretations of stories for the present day. There are also new operas being written by contemporary composers, many acclaimed and which address more current topics.

Whether an opera is a modern-day masterpiece or an enduring gem, these musical wonders continue to give their audiences that feeling of awe.

“GREAT ART IS TIMELESS, AND OPERA IS NO DIFFERENT,” MR. MERRITT SAYS. “I THINK IT REPRESENTS THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE, BUT ALSO BEAUTY. THE BEST MUSICIANS, CONDUCTORS, SINGERS, DIRECTORS, STAGE CREWS AND COSTUME DESIGNERS, ALL CREATING GLORIOUS ART IN THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VENUES IN THE WORLD — WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE?”
