SILVER CREEK REA L ESTATE GROUP FALL 2025
There is no place quite like the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau in autumn. The air turns crisp, the mountains glow in shades of amber and crimson, and every view feels like a work of art. For many of our readers, it is a season for slowing down, savoring the beauty, and imagining what it would be like to call this extraordinary place home.
The real estate market reflects this renewed energy. After a quieter start to summer, activity has accelerated, and Silver Creek Real Estate Group has seen a rise in sales volume across the Plateau. Buyers from across the Southeast are actively seeking the lifestyle our region offers, and our brokers have recently represented clients in sales at many of the Plateau’s most celebrated communities, including Burlingame, the Country Club of Sapphire Valley, Chattooga Club, Cullasaja Club, High Hampton, Highlands Falls Country Club, Lake Toxaway Country Club, Old Edwards Club, Trillium Links and Lake Club, Wade Hampton Golf Club, and Wildcat Cliffs Country Club to name just a few.
These results are the product of an unwavering commitment to our clients, delivering powerful and targeted marketing, deep market insight, and a level of engagement that maximizes every opportunity. In today’s market, those who consistently invest in relationships, innovate, and remain fully engaged achieve exceptional outcomes for buyers and sellers.
This issue explores the theme of Change — a fitting concept for the season and for many of the stories we share. We journey to two French chateaus that have evolved over time in strikingly different directions, each embracing an opposing vision. We trace the transformation of whiskey from humble bootleg beginnings to today’s celebrated craft. We consider what it means to age boldly, remaining open to new possibilities during major life transitions. We travel to Dubrovnik, a city that has shifted from an ancient fortress to a celebrated television backdrop. And closer to home, we celebrate the remarkable return of elk to Appalachia, a living testament to nature’s ability to renew.
Whether you are here to enjoy the season’s beauty, explore the communities that define the Plateau, or take the next step toward ownership in this extraordinary place, we invite you to draw on the expertise, reach, and resources that have made Silver Creek the trusted name in luxury real estate and NC Living Magazine the trusted name for all things luxury across our region.

EACH YEAR, LIKE CLOCKWORK, THE HIGHLANDS-CASHIERS PLATEAU PULLS OFF THE GRANDEST COSTUME CHANGE OF ALL: A FOREST-WIDE TRANSFORMATION INTO A SWIRLING KALEIDOSCOPE OF CRIMSON, AMBER, RUSSET, AND GOLD. THE AIR TURNS CRISPER, THE DAYS BECOME SHORTER, AND SUDDENLY OUR WARDROBES AND INTERIORS BEGIN TO REFLECT WHAT THE TREES ALREADY KNOW: IT’S TIME TO SHIFT.
But this isn’t just about seasonal aesthetics. According to psychologists, designers, and artists, color isn’t just something we see; it’s something we feel. And with its warm, emotionally evocative palette, fall is the perfect time to tune in to what those colors are really saying.
COLOR IS A LANGUAGE, & YOU’RE ALREADY FLUENT
You might not realize it, but you’re speaking in color every day. The navy you wear to a meeting, the moss green velvet pillow you suddenly had to have, the unexpected attraction to oxblood nail polish in October — all of it is part of an unconscious dialogue between mood and hue.
Writer Faber Birren dedicated his whole life to researching our psychological response to color. “Color rings the doorbell of the human mind and emotion and then leaves,” he famously said. But what did his work unveil? Color doesn’t just decorate our environment; it shapes perception, influences behavior, and mirrors our emotional states. Reds can stimulate appetite and passion, blues calm the nervous system, and yellows may lift spirits — or fray them if they’re too intense.
This begs the question: Is that sudden urge to revamp your walls and swap out your summer linens for rich ochre throws really about aesthetics, or are you, on some level, preparing your psyche for the inward pull of autumn?
COLOR AS YOUR ROOM’S VOICE
Interior designers have long used color to curate mood. And while trends shift (taupe to greige to “mushroom beige,” anyone?), the emotional response to color remains remarkably stable.
Susan San Souci, American Society of Interior Designers practitioner and owner of Cashiers’ The Designer’s Market, Inc., isn’t just thinking in hues; she’s thinking in light, texture, and psychological nuance. “Color, real color, affects each of us in different ways,” she notes. And in mountain homes, where the angle of light shifts dramatically with the seasons, that effect is magnified. “Northern
light can make a color look shockingly different from what it does in a south-facing room. If you’re redecorating, choose your paint color outside because sunlight zaps the pigment right out of it.”
For fall and winter, San Souci sees homeowners instinctively leaning into earthier, clay-toned palettes — warm neutrals, dusty blushes, and richer jewel tones — that mirror the seasonal turn inward. At The Designer’s Market, you can explore these moods in full color thanks to the store’s extensive paint collection by the heritage English brand Farrow & Ball, renowned for its rich pigments and evocative palettes.
Farrow & Ball’s reintroduction of archival hues this year only deepens the invitation toward traditional, grounded elegance. And when it comes to finishes? “Dead Flat is our go-to,” San Souci says. “It’s simply stunning.”
But choosing color isn’t just about what looks good; it’s about what feels right. “Using color in a home should be very personal,” she explains. “The same red that ignites passion in one person might make another feel uncomfortable. And while white may seem clean and safe to some, others find it cold and stark.”
As a designer, San Souci gently nudges her clients a step outside their comfort zone — just enough to tap into something authentic. “The results reliably manifest into uniquely individual spaces,” she says. “We listen to what they’re really trying to achieve and then guide them there, with color as the emotional anchor.”
In her hands, color becomes more than a surface decision. It’s a tool for mood, memory, and meaning, layered into the textures of home like brushstrokes on a canvas.

DRESSING THE SEASON
At The Look Boutique in Cashiers, owner Wendy King doesn’t just follow the seasons; she celebrates them in full spectrum. Known for curating a joyful and vibrant array of women’s wear all year round, the boutique is a local favorite.
“COLORS LIKE PURPLES, GOLDS, DEEP GREENS, BURNT ORANGES, AND RUSTY REDS ALL REFLECT THE NATURAL RHYTHM OF AUTUMN HERE ON THE PLATEAU,” KING SAYS. “THEY MIRROR THE ROADSIDE WILDFLOWERS AND CHANGING TREES — NATURE AT ITS MOST EXPRESSIVE. MANY PEOPLE ENJOY AUTUMN MOST OF ALL ON THE PLATEAU. IT IS A CELEBRATORY SEASON WHERE ONE CAN WITNESS NATURE UNFOLDING ITS RICHNESS TO THE FULLEST.”
Come winter, King sees clients gravitate toward richer neutrals (black, ivory, and camel) but always with a touch of festive flourish. “As we move closer to Christmas and New Year’s, you’ll see more jewel tones, reds, greens, and metallics like silver and champagne gold. They’re celebratory but still rooted in warmth.”
Texture plays a key supporting role, too. “Plaid flannel, corduroy, and natural-fiber knits — especially cotton sweaters with a touch of cashmere — are staples for fall,” she adds. These
fabrics offer coziness and evoke a certain nostalgic elegance that’s perfectly suited to the Highlands-Cashiers lifestyle that embraces crisp air and glowing hearths.
But King isn’t just styling people for the season; she’s tuning into their emotional needs. “Apparel has a direct effect on mood,” she explains. “Brighter colors uplift, and calmer tones soothe, and when someone needs a little boost, adding vibrant jewel tones in winter can work wonders.”

“AS LONG AS AUTUMN LASTS, I SHALL NOT HAVE HANDS, CANVAS, AND COLORS ENOUGH TO PAINT THE BEAUTIFUL THINGS I SEE.”
ART IMITATES NATURE (AND EMOTION)
For local artist Jo Ridge Kelley, who has an eponymous gallery in Waynesville, color isn’t merely a decorative decision; it’s a vessel for emotional truth. Known for her expressive landscapes and richly textured canvases, Kelley’s work captures the raw aliveness of the Plateau’s shifting seasons.
“The sunlight shimmering through the golden leaves and vibrant reds of autumn in the Blue Ridge Mountains provides a colorful palette for my oil paintings,” she says. “I’m inspired to get out and paint en plein air to try to capture the mood of the day, from sunrise to sunset.”
That “mood” isn’t just visual — it’s visceral. Kelley speaks of standing under falling leaves with a soft mist curling around her as though it were a living brushstroke. These fleeting atmospheric moments pull her toward the easel again and again, with each canvas becoming a study not just in hue, but in emotion.
“I especially love the gorgeous shades of red of the wild blueberry bushes against the blue grays and sunlit mist of the morning,” she shares. “Then, when the sun sets and the golden light streams across the trees and meadows, creating long shadows filled with violet light, my heart skips a beat.
For Kelley, how does this seasonal shift from the extroverted blaze of summer to the quiet beauty of fall cultivate a different kind of richness? “The cooler breezes and warm colors of an early fall morning bring on a sense of peace,” she says. “It feels like a deep-down calmness to my soul after a busy summer season.”
In Kelley’s work, color is not just seen — it’s felt. It’s how the mountains breathe and how we remember the light.

COLOR RITUALS FOR THE SOULFULLY INCLINED
You don’t have to be a designer or artist to play with color psychology. Small, intentional shifts can have a big impact. Here are a few easy rituals to invite emotional harmony this season.
Trade light cottons for heavier textures in deep rust, ochre, or fig. Wrap yourself in warmth, literally and metaphorically.
Create a centerpiece using natural elements such as pumpkins, dried leaves, and branches in a palette of warm neutrals and rusty reds. Use this table for mindful meals that celebrate gratitude and harvest.
Sometimes, a crimson scarf or copper-toned lipstick is all it takes to shift your energy — and get compliments — in the fall.
Arrange candles, crystals, or seasonal objects in a palette that evokes the feelings you want more of — be they comfort and joy or clarity and power.
Choose outfits that reflect the season’s colors, such as terracotta, olive, mustard, or deep plum. Why not set a personal intention tied to each color’s energy, such as confidence, creativity, or calm?
Dressing head-to-toe in one tonal family (even in neutrals) can feel oddly empowering and serene.
In the end, color is more than a trend; it’s a compass that can ground us, inspire us, and mirror who we are becoming. As the trees blaze in fleeting brilliance, we’re invited to reflect on that shift in our homes, wardrobes, and inner worlds. When the leaves change, maybe we’re meant to change a little, too.
IIn the gentle twilight of France’s Loire Valley, where morning mist hangs low over vineyards and the air carries the hush of centuries, two extraordinary châteaus rise from the landscape. But they are not mere monuments — they are living reflections of history’s more intimate dramas. Beyond the touristic gloss and manicured lawns, Château de Chambord and Château de Chenonceau stand as architectural odes to desire — silent witnesses to the private ambitions, rivalries, and romantic entanglements that once shaped the soul of France.
To walk their corridors is to move through the delicate fabric of memory and power. These are not simply grand houses but expressions of two fundamentally different visions. They are two philosophies of influence, rendered in stone. One was built for the hunt, the other for the heart. One was born from the untamed thrill of conquest, the other from the enduring subtlety of feminine design and influence.
They exist in counterpoint: Chambord — excessive, feral, and primal — was shaped by the echo of the hunt, haunted by the spirit of the sanglier (wild boar), while Chenonceau — graceful, elusive, and enduring — was sculpted by the quiet genius of women and aligned with the symbolism of the stag, revered not for domination but for poise.
Together, they form a dialogue across time and temperament. In the heart of the “Valley of Kings,” they remind us that power is not singular. It may roar, or it may whisper. It may overwhelm, or it may endure. And, perhaps most tellingly, it may be built to be seen, or it may be built to be remembered.
Château de Chambord emerges from the wild woodlands of Sologne — not as a residence but like a mirage in stone. France’s grandest and perhaps most enigmatic château, it blurs the line between fortress and fantasy. With 426 rooms, 282 fireplaces, and 77 staircases, it is at once formidable and poetic — an architectural dreamscape scaled to ambition rather than life.
Commissioned in 1519 by François I and flushed with Renaissance ideals and military glory, Chambord was never meant to be lived in. It was designed as a hunting lodge in name only — a setting for theater, diplomacy, and display. Enclosed by 32 kilometers of wall and surrounded by 13,000 acres of untamed forest, the château became a sanctuary for spectacle rather than sustenance. Yet to enter Chambord is not to feel neglected grandeur — it is to be enveloped by atmosphere. Light enters in narrow shafts; sound is amplified as if within a cathedral. Even in summer, the air retains a cool stillness. Every space feels oversized and unyielding — yet majestic.
Inside, the rooms are layered like a puzzle. The keep is arranged in a Greek cross with four vaulted hallways intersecting at the center. Each floor connects by the double-helix staircase, where two people may ascend without ever crossing
paths. A marvel, yes — but also a metaphor. At court, proximity was not intimacy. Power moved in parallel. Rivals could rise beside each other without ever needing to meet — until they had to. Fireplaces, some large enough to walk into, line nearly every chamber. Yet the vastness defeats them. Many rooms were never completed or lived in. It is said that François spent fewer than 72 nights here across three decades. Even the “Sun King,” Louis XIV, found its rooms more theatrical than practical.
In Chambord, you are reminded that obsession can build but not necessarily belong. It is a monument to an idea: of sovereignty, of taste, and of a kingdom dreamed on an epic scale. The walls are adorned with antlers — trophies from hunts long gone. Hanging above doors and mantels, the king’s emblem — the salamander — lingers like a riddle. “Je l’éteins et je l’entretiens,” read the royal motto: “I extinguish it, and I sustain it.” It is a creature that thrives in fire — a paradox, a promise, or just the fever dream of a king who mistook monuments for memory.

By the mid-18th century, the château echoed with newer scandals. The flamboyant Marshal Maurice de Saxe made Chambord his retreat, inviting a cascade of lovers and political opportunists. When he died abruptly — whispers blaming poison or revenge — the château lapsed into neglect.
Even today, Chambord’s halls feel suspended in grandeur without intimacy. Visitors marvel at its vastness but struggle
to imagine a life lived within it. The sanglier was hunted here, and its spirit endures. The boar does not court. It charges. It is pursued for the thrill, not the feast.
Like the boar, Chambord is powerful, untamed, and ultimately unyielding. It was designed to impress, to conquer, and to haunt — and it does all that. Its greatness commands contemplation — we visit not to possess but to stand in awe.
If Chambord is a battle cry, then Chenonceau is a whispered poem. Spanning the Cher River in a gentle sweep of arches, Chenonceau does not impose — it entices. Its beauty is measured, and its symmetry is serene. Yet beneath its elegant lines lies a tale no less fierce — of women who ruled through subtlety and of influence wielded like silk over steel.
Built in 1513 by Thomas Bohier, Chenonceau passed not through kings but queens and mistresses. Its true story begins with Diane de Poitiers, the brilliant, ageless lover of King Henry II of France. In 1547, Henry gifted her Chenonceau. She transformed it into a work of Renaissance grace, extending the gardens, commissioning the iconic bridge across the Cher, and turning the château into a sanctuary for art, pleasure, and private power. Diane was no ornament. She held sway over royal edicts, managed court appointments, and signed letters beside the King as “HenriDiane” — a scandal that lit up the court. Her gardens, laid in perfect triangles, reflected her taste for control and spectacle alike. She even dressed to match the château’s black-and-white tiles.
But power shifts with grief. When Henry died in a jousting accident, his widow, Catherine de Medici, reclaimed Chenonceau with chilling resolve, and Diane was banished to Chaumont. Catherine, for decades publicly humiliated by Diane’s influence, now had the stage — and she knew how to use it. Rather than erase Diane’s legacy, Catherine extended it. She built the two-story gallery atop Diane’s bridge — an architectural coup and symbolic triumph. The grand hall hosted balls, marriages, political salons, and perhaps its most infamous event — the “Bal des Seins Nus” — a fête for Henry III where noblewomen appeared nearly nude beneath gauze in a carefully orchestrated spectacle meant to silence gossip about the young King’s rumored proclivities.
But behind the pageantry, Catherine worked. From her “Cabinet Vert” — a private study overlooking the river — she ruled France through years of war and upheaval. Here, power was neither shouted nor flaunted. It was drafted in ink, behind closed doors. Later, Louise Dupin carried Chenonceau’s torch into the Enlightenment. She turned the château into a salon of reason and beauty, hosting Voltaire, Rousseau, and Montesquieu. Her
intellect matched her charm. During the French Revolution, she saved the château by declaring its bridge essential to the people. Its gardens, too, whisper rivalry. Diane’s are precise, geometric, and a performance of control. Catherine’s bloom is softer and more unpredictable. These are two visions of femininity and of power — growing side by side but never quite merging.
Chenonceau endures not through grandiosity but through grace. It is a château that has known sorrow and splendor, power and patience. Its rooms are not cavernous but intimate. Its strength lies in its softness and its resilience in its restraint.
This is the stag’s realm — graceful, alert, and impossible to corner. It is revered not for the chase but for what it represents: poise, intelligence, and presence.
Though born of the same valley and era, Chambord and Chenonceau offer opposing truths. One is the roar of dominion; the other, the murmur of endurance. One is monumental — made to be admired from afar. The other — lived in — is made to be felt.
Chambord is the fantasy of a young king, built in pursuit of legacy. Chenonceau is the lived philosophy of women who knew that influence, once embedded, outlasts spectacle. Both are masterpieces. But only one was made to hold life.
In the end, it is not the fortress of stone that holds the truest power. It is the bridge that remains. The quiet corridor that carried messages in war. The study where ink changed history. The garden where two women, centuries apart, whispered in flowers rather than in declarations.
The sanglier and the stag. One charges. The other endures. One is built to impress, the other to remain.
And centuries on, we still remember them both — not just for their grandeur but for what they reveal. That true luxury is not in what overwhelms but in what lingers.
Not in dominance — but in meaning.

IN OUR YEARLONG SERIES ON AGING BOLDLY, WE’VE DEFINED AND EXPANDED ON WHAT WE CAN DO TO LIVE A LIFE OF MEANING AND PURPOSE, FROM STAYING HEALTHY AND FIT, TO KEEPING CONNECTED IN THE COMMUNITY, TO REDISCOVERING PASSIONS AND FINDING NEW INTERESTS. IN THIS ISSUE, WE’RE EXPLORING NAVIGATING CHANGE THROUGH SOME OF LIFE’S BIGGEST TRANSITIONS AND BEING OPEN TO NEW POSSIBILITIES.
For many, the family home holds years, sometimes decades, of memories, traditions and emotional ties. So when the time comes to consider a move, whether for practicality or lifestyle, the decision to downsize can be traumatic, stirring up grief, uncertainty, and even guilt. Sorting through furniture and photo albums becomes about navigating the emotional landscape of change and finding a way forward that honors the past while making room for what’s next.
Elizabeth Kovacs, a licensed clinical social worker at Clearwater Counseling in Cornelius, North Carolina, says, “Leaving a home filled with decades of memories can be really difficult for some, and there is added grief of what to do with all of the things that children have made. My approach to supporting clients who are stuck in this process is to validate their feelings and to help them remove emotional attachment from things that are just things.”
It can be helpful and eye-opening to invite your grown children to look through the items you have saved for them and let them help decide what to keep and what to toss. This collaborative process can make the experience feel less like a loss and more like a shared transition.
Kovacs also encourages people to think about the future and alleviate some of the burden on loved ones. “Be proactive when it comes to your will, your wishes, and who gets what, so your loved ones are not tasked with figuring all of that out,” says Kovacs.
Remember the joy and freedom this time in life can bring, Kovacs advises. You and your spouse may get a chance to reconnect and remind yourselves of what brought you together in the first place. Embrace the extra time to explore new interests and pursue different activities once your focus is no longer on raising children.
So many of us are defined by what we do in our careers or our roles as parents. We often stay in the same career for 40-plus years, even if we’re feeling burned out, because we see the goal of retirement as the final exit in our story. But what if we want more from our careers? Not necessarily more for our pocketbooks, but more to enhance our lives’ playbooks. People often have second acts after they retire, but for some, that is too long to wait.
After nearly 40 years as a marketing professional, Stephen Condon had succeeded in reaching his end goal in his field. He could have put in a few more years until retirement age and called it a “good life” by any measurement.
But as he tells it, “By my 40s, I’d stopped growing. My people management skills were stuck in dialup mode, and my marketing expertise wasn’t exactly cutting-edge either. I bounced through short-term gigs, working from my home office, where evenings morphed into a predictable cycle of cocktails and Netflix. I was comfortable but uninspired. At 60, I knew I needed a change — something fulfilling, something to get me out of my bubble and back into the community.”
Condon’s inspiring story eventually led him to a 10-week EMT course at a community college. He figured that, worst case, he’d learn CPR and how to handle emergencies, particularly with grandkids in his future. And best case? “A whole new career,” says Condon, which is exactly what his training led to.
He says, “Walking into that EMT classroom was like stepping into a time machine. My classmates were barely old enough to rent a car, but their energy was infectious. I loved being back in a learning environment — cracking open textbooks, memorizing protocols, and soaking up practical skills.” In November 2024, Condon graduated and passed the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians exam.
During the EMT course, Condon got to do ridealongs with ambulance services. His first was with his local fire department, where he witnessed and assisted with a cardiac arrest call. “I was down on the floor surrounded by 10 members of the Del Mar and Solana Beach, California, Fire Departments who looked like they moonlighted as ‘Thunder from Down Under’ cast members. Eighteen minutes of CPR, and we got a return of spontaneous circulation. Off to the hospital, lights and sirens blaring, I was hooked — heart pounding, hands shaking, fully alive.”
After that initial training, Condon had several paths to choose from in his new career. He ended up landing a role with a medical transport company, drawn by flexible four 10-hour work shifts per week,
the chance to work on critical care transports, and the company’s contract with a major hospital network. Six months in, he’s loving it.
Like any job, there are benefits and drawbacks. When discussing the benefits,, Condon says, “I’m in the best shape of my life. Big breakfasts, eggs galore, and a sprinkle of creatine to help me hoist 250-pound patients onto gurneys. I’ve cut back on booze and ditched the Netflix binges. Patient interactions are the heart of this job — whether it’s calming someone with a broken hip or chatting with a bipolar patient having a tough day, I feel like I’m making a difference.”
And what about the financial planning aspect of his career change? Condon’s wife’s job covers his
health benefits, but she is looking to retire soon. His plan is to keep working full-time until he’s 65 to cover her benefits until they both are eligible for Medicare.
Condon posted his story on his LinkedIn page and received hundreds of likes and lots of support from others who want to embark on a similar journey. He encouraged others to “find your why.” His was “purpose and community.”
Condon also advises people to “not fear the classroom,” “embrace the grind,” and “stay as healthy as you can to have the energy to start something new.”
He says that changing careers at 61 wasn’t easy, but it’s been one of the best decisions of his life. “I’m not just surviving — I’m thriving, bruises and all.”

STAYING INVOLVED IN YOUR COMMUNITY, PRIORITIZING PHYSCIAL HEALTH, PURSUING YOUR PASSIONS, AND BUILDING UP A SUPPORT NETWORK ARE JUST A FEW WAYS TO NAVIGATE CHANGE WITH CONFIDENCE. PHOTOS BY NC LIVING MAGAZINE
MENTAL & EMOTIONAL PREPARATION
• Acknowledge change: Accept that aging brings change. Anticipating this helps reduce fear and resistance. Kovacs points out, “We are often most comfortable with continuity and stability, so change can be difficult. A good way to look at change is not to focus on what you’re giving up, but what you’re gaining. For example, instead of being tied down to the maintenance of a large home, moving to a condo can be quite liberating and allow time for travel or a new hobby.”
• Cultivate resilience: Practice coping skills such as mindfulness, journaling, or therapy to stay emotionally flexible.
• Define new purpose: Transitions like retirement often create a void. Reevaluate your goals, values, and what gives your life meaning.
FINANCIAL READINESS
• Plan early: Begin saving and investing as early as possible. Review retirement plans regularly.
• Downsize if needed: Consider simplifying your lifestyle or relocating to reduce expenses and maintenance needs.
• Talk to a financial advisor: Ensure you have a plan for health care, estate management, and long-term care.
PHYSICAL HEALTH MAINTENANCE
• Stay active: Regular exercise helps maintain mobility, independence, and mental sharpness.
• Eat for longevity: Nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory diets (such as the Mediterranean diet) support healthy aging.
• Proactive health care: Schedule regular checkups and screenings, and stay current on vaccines.
SOCIAL & COMMUNITY SUPPORT
• Stay engaged: Join groups, volunteer, or participate in clubs to maintain a sense of belonging and purpose. “I think we’ve come really far as a society in recognizing the worth of happy, healthy older adults,” says Kovacs. “My community has several recreation centers just for seniors. Religious and cultural organizations are also great resources. Churches often have an active seniors’ group.
• It’s also a great time to pick up a new activity, such as a game, craft, or passion, and find others who share the same interests or heritage as you. Bridge, mahjong, genealogy, pickleball, hiking, aqua aerobics, tai chi, and chair yoga are just a few of the activities to jump into.”
• Build a support network: Identify people who can help you in times of need, emotionally and logistically.
PRACTICAL & LOGISTICAL PLANNING
• Legal and end-of-life planning: Update wills, power of attorney, advance directives, and health care proxies.
• Home safety: Adapt your home for future mobility or accessibility needs.
• Document organization: Keep important documents (medical, financial, legal) organized and accessible.

At the foot of North Carolina’s storied Whiteside Mountain, where ancient granite faces rise into the clouds and cool breezes carry the scent of mountain laurels, Wildcat Cliffs Country Club is more than just a seasonal escape — it’s a way of life. Here, amid the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, days might begin with a quiet walk along a wooded trail or a few calm minutes beside a trout-stocked pond and end with dinner among friends as the sun sets behind the ridgeline.
For generations, members have been drawn to Wildcat Cliffs for its balance of tradition and modernity, its wide-ranging amenities, and above all, its warm, close-knit community. Whether you’re a resident or are just here for the summer, life at Wildcat Cliffs moves to the timeless rhythm of the mountains.
Perched at 4,250 feet in elevation, the 18-hole championship course at Wildcat Cliffs enjoys refreshingly cool summer temperatures, making it ideal for play that’s both invigorating and unhurried. Originally designed by George W. Cobb and reimagined by architect Bill Bergin in a $3.5 million renovation, the course is celebrated for its accessibility and breathtaking scenery. Rhododendrons and mountain laurels frame fairways and long-range views open unexpectedly between tee and green. Wildlife sightings are simply part of the game.
Five sets of tees, providing nine different tee options, ensure the course is as welcoming to newer players as it is rewarding for seasoned golfers. Bentgrass greens, tees, and fairways are complemented by bluegrass surrounds, while the engineered rolling terrain means the course recovers quickly after rainfall. Practice is elevated to an experience of its own, thanks to a 2-acre short game area, which has FlightScope launch monitor technology and is conveniently located just steps from the golf shop.
Club tournaments, relaxed social rounds, and weekly play with the Men’s and Ladies’ Golf Associations make golf here as much about connection as competition.
The clubhouse is the heart of Wildcat Cliffs — a gathering place where members linger over long lunches, toast special occasions, and share in seasonal celebrations. Dining here is designed to suit every mood. The main dining room offers casual mountain elegance with sweeping views of the course, while the pavilion and bar invite relaxed conversation beside a stone fireplace.
Menus change frequently to highlight the best of local and regional flavors, from North Carolina trout to heirloom vegetables, and the club’s Sunday brunch is a long-standing favorite. Outdoor spaces such as the West Terrace make the most of the Plateau’s gentle summers and crisp autumn evenings, while the Halfway Café provides light bites and refreshments for golfers between nines.
Life at Wildcat Cliffs extends beyond the fairways. The Fitness and Recreation Center offers stateof-the-art equipment, a heated indoor pool, a 12-foot hot tub, steam rooms, and a full calendar of group exercise classes year-round. Licensed massage therapists, personal trainers, and yoga instructors are available for one-on-one sessions. Trails, including the path to Secret Falls, invite exploration at any pace.
Croquet, a member favorite, is played on three regulation-sized bent grass lawn in a striking mountain stone setting. An active association hosts tournaments and “Wine and Wickets”
socials, and sessions are led by nationally recognized players and instructors. Racquet enthusiasts can choose between two clay tennis courts and four pickleball courts, both offering clinics, organized play, and friendly competition throughout the season.
Families enjoy playgrounds, fishing at Lakeside Park, picnics in the pavilion, and visits to the dog park. For those who crave time on the water, the member-organized Glenville Lake Club is just 15 minutes away and offers boat dockage, lodging, and a lakeside pavilion on one of the highest large lakes east of the Mississippi River.
Wildcat Cliffs thrives on its lively member community. Bridge games, book club gatherings, art classes, and Bible studies fill the weekly calendar alongside seasonal events such as lobster nights, golf cart parades, Fourth of July cookouts, and the Wildminster Dog Show. The club’s intimate size fosters genuine friendships, making newcomers feel like part of the family from day one.
Homes within and around Wildcat Cliffs reflect the same blend of beauty and authenticity found in the club itself — whether they’re tucked into the forest, perched above the course, or positioned to capture sweeping mountain views. For many, owning here means not only having a place of residence but an enduring connection to an area where life is lived with intention.
In a world that moves faster with each passing year, Wildcat Cliffs offers the chance to slow down, breathe deeply, and fill your days with what matters most — natural beauty, shared experiences, and a community that feels like home. It’s not simply a club; it’s a mountain retreat with heart and heritage, ready to welcome you into its story.

NORTH CAROLINA HAS ALWAYS KNOWN HOW TO STIR THINGS UP. FROM THE MISTY FORESTS OF THE BLUE RIDGE TO THE SLEEK, STATE-OF-THE-ART DISTILLERIES MAKING WAVES TODAY, THE ART OF SPIRITS RUNS DEEP IN THESE HILLS. AND WHILE OUR STATE’S REPUTATION WAS ONCE BUILT ON BACKWOODS STILLS AND BOOTLEGGERS WITH A NEED FOR SPEED, TODAY’S DISTILLERS ARE BLENDING TRADITION WITH INNOVATION. WELCOME TO THE WILD, INTOXICATING WORLD OF DISTILLING IN THE TAR HEEL STATE.
ROOTS OF A RENEGADE CRAFT
There’s moonshine in these mountains — at least, there used to be. Long before North Carolina’s boutique distilleries began crafting small-batch bourbons, there were copper stills tucked deep in the hollers, camouflaged by rhododendrons and Appalachian grit.
Distilling arrived in the 18th century with North Carolina’s earliest European settlers, many of them Scots-Irish and German farmers who knew a thing or two about turning grain into gold.
Corn was abundant, and distilling it into whiskey wasn’t just smart — it was survival. It kept crops from spoiling and created a valuable trade item that could slip easily into a saddlebag or be bartered for tools, fabric, or the occasional indulgence.
Out west, in the folds of the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains, distilling became less of an industry and more of an art form — equal parts chemistry, folklore, and inherited know-how. Stills were hidden, recipes were guarded, and the term “moonshine” was born, named for the hours under which it was made.
North Carolina beat the national curve, going dry in 1908 — a full 12 years before federal Prohibition. Predictably, this only made whiskey more desirable. Demand surged, and moonshiners answered the call, pouring their fiery product into Mason jars and outrunning revenuers on winding mountain roads.
And oh, those roads.
The original bootleggers didn’t just outdrive the law — they inspired a sport. Local legends such as Wilkes County’s Junior Johnson (a former moonshiner turned NASCAR hero) modified their cars for speed and stealth, inadvertently laying the groundwork for stock car racing. So yes, you can thank moonshine for your Sunday tailgates.
Today, the scent of illicit stills has been replaced by the crisp aromas of legal distilleries, where heritage meets high end. Across the state, a new generation of craft distillers is reviving those age-old methods; think charred oak barrels, heirloom corn, and copper pot stills, but with a 21st-century sensibility.
Over in Black Mountain, Oak and Grist Distilling Company is quietly redefining what Southern whiskey can be. Co-founder and Head Distiller William Goldberg is crafting single malt spirits that marry the ancient traditions of Scotland with the rich biodiversity of Western North Carolina.
“I’ve always loved making things from scratch,” Goldberg says, “and when I saw whiskey as a value-added agricultural product, it all clicked.”
A graduate of Warren Wilson College with a degree in sustainable agriculture, he saw an opportunity to bottle the unique terroir of Appalachia — literally.
While Goldberg respects the region’s moonshine roots, he’s not leaning into the outlaw lore. “Modern distillation, even during Prohibition, was built on techniques brought by the Scots-Irish. That’s where I draw the line,” he says. Instead, his focus is on precision, sustainability, and a kind of reverence for the grain itself. “We’re the only 100% grain-to-glass distillery in Western North Carolina. That means every decision — from the fields to the bottle — shapes our spirits’ character.”
Goldberg’s approach blends authenticity with innovation. Inspired by Speyside-style Scotch, Oak
and Grist’s Origin American Single Malt Whiskey is light, floral, and grassy — an elegant contrast to its bolder sibling, Descendent, which takes on deeper notes of caramel, baking spice, and charred oak. “Each expression tells an equally true version of our story,” Goldberg says. “Single malt isn’t singular.”
It’s a story rooted in place. From sourcing barley from seventh-generation farms such as ASR Grain Company in Shelby to partnering with regional nonprofits, Oak and Grist sees community not as a marketing angle, but a foundational ingredient. “We’re not just making whiskey,” Goldberg says. “We’re making a case for what Western North Carolina tastes like.”
Oak and Grist Distilling Company offers 40-minute distillery tours weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Visit oakandgrist.com for more information.
Meanwhile, in Fletcher, Two Trees Distilling is also rewriting the rules of whiskey, but without forgetting where it came from. “Our story is rooted in Appalachian tradition,” explains CEO Steve Laker. “From the original moonshiners who passed their recipes down by word of mouth to the types of woods we use in aging.” That reverence for heritage finds expression not only in their collaboration with famed moonshiner Tim Smith but also in the use of local spring water and salvaged Appalachian oak, including wood rescued from Hurricane Helene.
But don’t mistake Two Trees Distilling for a legacy act. Their true hallmark is innovation. “We’re not just preserving history — we’re evolving it,” asserts Laker. At the core of that evolution is their Sustainably Matured process, a proprietary aging method that dramatically shortens maturation time while reducing environmental impact. “It’s a modern solution rooted in tradition,” says Laker. “We pair each spirit with a specific wood type and toast profile, optimizing flavor in a way few others can.”
Their Batch 314 and Wood-Crafted Bourbon showcase this balance of efficiency and excellence. “These are great expressions of our technology and the unique process that sets us apart,” he notes, offering rich, fully developed flavor without the decades-long wait.

Two Trees Distilling is also earning accolades for its playful, naturally flavored whiskey range. Seasonal sips such as Sea Salted Caramel, Carolina Peach, and Crisp Apple are crafted with care. “We pair our whiskey base with flavor profiles that complement, not cover, the spirit,” Steve enthuses. The result? Clean, balanced, award-winning blends that have caught the attention of judges at both the SIP Awards and The Fifty Best.
Beyond the bottle, their ethos is local and deeply connected to the community. “We’ve worked to keep things local, from the Appalachian water to the wood we use,” shares Laker. Their Land of the Sky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, made with hurricanefallen trees and tied to storm recovery efforts, is a perfect example of their “meaningful modern moonshine” mindset.
A visit to their Fletcher tasting room promises more than just a pour. “You can expect a warm Appalachian welcome and a whole lot of flavor.” Complimentary flights, seasonal cocktails, and a front-row view of the factory floor make it as much an experience as a tasting. You can even engrave a custom bottle before heading home.
Two Trees Distilling offers free tastings at their tasting room, seven days a week. Visit twotreesdistilling.com for more information.

From high-tech innovations to old-school Appalachian stills, here are three North Carolina distilleries putting modern spins on classic moonshine.
In the foothills of McDowell County, Copper Creek Distillery is where old-school mountain moonshine meets meticulous craft. Co-owned by neighbors Greg Shuford and Randy Berry, this operation honors tradition with small-batch spirits that are as authentic as they are approachable. Their signature 90-proof IL-LIC-IT Shine sets the tone: bold, clean, and true to its roots. For something fruit-forward, the 80-proof Grape Shine and Apple Shine offer a juicy twist on Appalachian heritage. coppercreekshine.com
Tucked into the heart of Transylvania County, this rustic distillery keeps the outlaw spirit alive with legal small-batch moonshine distilled the oldfashioned way, but with fun flavors. Be welcomed by founder Papa Moonshine at their Cedar Mountain tasting room to sample an espresso bean-infused Rise N’ Shine, or zesty LemonHello. cedarmountainmoonshine.com
Another new moonshine player with serious local buzz, M&T Distilling handcrafts straight 100-proof corn moonshine in small batches. With a focus on clarity and flavors such as cinnamon, apple pie, and salted caramel made with North Carolina-grown grains, M&T Distilling is proof that precision and patience are still the secret ingredients in any great spirit. mandtdistilling.com

SOME DESTINATIONS ARE JUST NAMES ON A BUCKET LIST. OTHERS LIVE IN YOUR IMAGINATION LONG BEFORE YOU EVER STEP FOOT THERE. BORA BORA IS FIRMLY IN THE LATTER CAMP — PART MYTH, PART MASTERPIECE, AND 100% MAGICAL.
An extinct volcano surrounded by a ring of tiny islets called motus and one of the world’s most pristine lagoons, Bora Bora lies in the heart of French Polynesia, about 160 miles northwest of Tahiti. And let’s say this sleepy corner of paradise has just received a little reawakening.
In a major milestone for the South Pacific, The Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa opened its doors this year as the first new hotel development on the island in seven years. This marks more than a luxurious addition to Bora Bora’s exclusive collection of resorts; it also signals a quiet yet powerful renaissance of one of the world’s most storied tropical destinations.
The lull in new developments wasn’t accidental. Bora Bora has always been fiercely protective of its natural beauty. Development is slow by design and restrained to preserve the island’s forestcovered peaks, shimmering lagoon, and delicate marine ecosystems.
With the global pause brought by the pandemic, Bora Bora’s luxury hospitality scene settled into a rare stillness. While the existing top-tier resorts — such as Four Seasons, The St. Regis, and InterContinental — continued to draw travelers seeking restorative beauty, there was a sense that the island was holding its breath. Now, the arrival
of The Westin feels like an exhale — a carefully considered expansion that honors the past while opening doors to the future.
But tourism here isn’t just about footprints in the sand; it’s about connection, preservation, and pride of place. “We want people who set foot on our island to be considered not as tourists or visitors but as our guests,” says Mayor Tong Sang, “with all that implies in terms of exchanges, sharing, and mutual respect.”
Rising like a polished pearl at the base of Mount Otemanu, The Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa is the island’s most dazzling debut.
After an epic property-wide renovation and rebrand, this dreamy newcomer exudes modern glamour but with a resolutely Polynesian soul. Think traditional thatched-roof silhouettes reimagined with crisp architectural lines, openair lounges that melt into the landscape, and interiors that purr “quiet luxury” in shades of cream, coral, and lagoon blue.
The entire resort has been designed with nature in mind. Each villa is perfectly angled to maximize the views (and minimize peeking neighbors), so whether you’re sipping coconut water on your deck or soaking in your private plunge pool, you feel like the only soul on the island.
With 128 overwater bungalows (the largest collection in Bora Bora) and 14 spacious beachfront villas, there’s space for everyone — from honeymooners to sun-chasing families to digital detoxers chasing zen. Signature touches such as the Westin Heavenly Bed, a lavender balm turndown, and a curated “Sleep Well” in-room menu make it impossible not to float off into dreamland after a day in paradise.
You’d be forgiven for never wanting to leave your villa, but The Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa gives you plenty of reasons to explore. At the heart of the resort is Bora Bora’s largest infinity pool bordered by cabanas, waterfalls, a swim-up bar, and eye-wateringly gorgeous views of sand and sky. Order a fresh mango cocktail, paddle over to your lounger, and let the sun do its thing.
Foodies, take note: This is not your average island buffet situation. Three restaurants and three bars serve up everything from elegant Tahitian crudo and Korean-spiced mahi-mahi to beachside bites and tropical cocktails that taste like vacation in a glass. The standout? At Maere, the resort’s signature restaurant, the menu is ever-changing, and the ingredients are always fresh. (Rumor has it that the pineapple-basil granita dessert is a must.)
For those in search of serenity, the Heavenly Spa by Westin (heavenly is certainly a theme here) lives up to its name. Tucked into lush greenery with views of the lagoon, this is a place where stress evaporates on contact. Treatments range from Swedish massages with organic coconut oil to a 90-minute Polynesian tupuna ritual inspired by ancestral healing traditions and featuring a body scrub made from crushed coconut shells and sea salt.
In true 2025 fashion, wellness extends beyond the spa. Daily yoga, paddleboard sessions, Tahitian dance classes, and even “paddle yoga” (yes, it’s a thing) let guests move at their own pace. Want to learn how to weave a flower crown or craft with coconut palm? They’ve got that, too.
If you’re the type who likes your travel with a side of purpose, make time for the Eco Center Bora Bora. The resort’s newly revamped initiative is all about sea turtle conservation, sustainable marine ecology, and hands-on guest experiences such as helping prepare turtle meals or assisting with feedings. It’s a beautiful way to give back to the island that gives so much.
While the big-name resorts deliver plenty of culinary polish, some of Bora Bora’s most memorable meals are found beyond the manicured paths. Tucked into the lush hillside above Pufai Bay, La Villa Mahana is a fine-dining gem with just eight tables, making it a coveted
spot for intimate tasting menus of locally sourced food and curated wine pairings. With candlelight, art-lined walls, and a view to swoon over, it’s tailor-made for romance.
In Vaitape, Saint James brings French Polynesian flair to the waterfront with a chic bistro feel, a refined menu of seasonal ingredients, and a wine cellar that would impress even the most dedicated oenophiles. A few minutes away, the Bora Bora Yacht Club is your go-to for sunset cocktails and elevated yet unfussy fare in a breezy, oceanfront setting — perfect for a relaxed dinner or a nightcap before heading back to your resort.
And for a taste of island life without the price tag? Head to the food trucks at the ferry dock, where locals gather nightly around 7 p.m. for fresh poke bowls, crepes, grilled meats, and tropical juices. It’s casual, quick, and full of flavor: just how Bora Bora does it best. No reservations, no dress code, just pure island taste.
For more information about The Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa and to book a stay, visit westinborabora. com. Rates start at $1,000 per night. The most common international gateways are Los Angeles (LAX) or San Francisco (SFO), with connections to Fa’a’ International Airport (PPT) in Tahiti and then a final flight to Bora Bora’s Motu Mute Airport (BOB).

FALL IN LOVE WITH THE “PEARL OF THE ADRIATIC”
George Bernard Shaw once said, “Those who seek paradise on earth should come to Dubrovnik and find it.” When the last of the summer cruise ships drift away and the Adriatic begins to exhale, Dubrovnik indeed comes into its own. The air turns silkier, the sun shines more golden, and the crowds melt into memory. This is when the Croatian city reveals its truest self — quietly radiant, deliciously slow, and rich with soul.
Perched like a terra-cotta jewel on the edge of the shimmering Dalmatian coast, Dubrovnik’s medieval walls embrace a labyrinth of marble streets and baroque facades. As the season turns, harvest is in full swing, and a slew of cultural and culinary events make the “Pearl of the Adriatic” one of the finest destinations for a European escape.
Born in the seventh century as Ragusa, over the annals of time, Dubrovnik was shaped by the Byzantines and polished by the Venetians, and it eventually crowned itself a free republic for nearly 500 years. At its peak in the 15th century, Ragusa rivaled Venice as a maritime power, with a fleet of over 180 ships and trade routes that stretched from the Ottoman Empire to England. Its skilled diplomats secured independence through treaties, not war.
A UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its immaculate Old Town, you may recognize Dubrovnik’s 6,000-foot ancient walls from “Game of Thrones,” “Star Wars,” and “Mamma Mia!” So photogenic are the golden stone ramparts, red-tiled rooftops, and sea-lapped fortresses that directors and celebrities alike can’t resist Dubrovnik’s charms. In fact, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez were spotted strolling around Stradun in the Old Town, and Novak Djokovic is a regular visitor.
With the heat softened and the streets hushed, Dubrovnik’s limestone heart begins to beat a little slower. A good jumping-off place for exploring Dubrovnik’s rich history is Rector’s Palace, a Gothic-Renaissance marvel once home to the city’s elected rulers, now housing the Cultural History Museum. Step into seafaring lore at the Maritime Museum, nestled within the sturdy walls of St. John’s Fortress. For a touch of modernity, head to the cliffside Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik, where bold Croatian works rival the views.
Slip away to Lokrum Island, a lush sanctuary offshore that’s just a 10-minute ferry ride from the Old Town port. Here, peacocks strut through the stillness, and ancient olive groves seem to whisper secrets older than time. Climb the historic fort, meander the botanical gardens, and don’t miss the famous Iron Throne housed at the Visitor’s Center.
No visit to Dubrovnik would be complete without a walk around the city’s splendid walls. In the
morning is best, when golden light spills like honey over the red rooftops and the sea glistens in a palette of pewter and turquoise. Revel in the Old Town’s polished alleys without jostling shoulders or waiting in lines. Fancy a cinematic panorama of the city? Take the cable car (or a 6-kilometer return hike) to Mount Srd, where Dubrovnik unfurls beneath you like a forgotten scroll.
In the fall, the Adriatic remains warm enough for a gentle swim, and Dubrovnik’s beaches are nearly yours alone. Banje Beach (just a stone’s throw from the Old Town gates) layers golden pebbles with luxe loungers and the scent of sea spray, framed by fortress views. Meanwhile, on Lopud Island, Šunj Beach stretches in a rare arc of fine white sand backed by fragrant pines, and it is accessible via a scenic forest path. The shallow, turquoise waters shimmer like glass, ideal for wading, daydreaming, or dozing to the lull of cicadas.
Let’s talk about the amenities, which are designed for action or indulgent relaxation. Recognized as one of Croatia’s best, Sun Gardens’ awardwinning spa tempts with multiple pools, a tepidarium, a thermal area, and a comprehensive treatment program. Unwind further at one of three freshwater outdoor pools or pull up a premium lounger at the private NUKU Beach before a refreshing dip.
For action seekers, the sports center features a 24/7 gym, tennis courts, squash courts, and a climbing wall. When you’re after a bit of grownups-only downtime, book the kids into the excellent Sports Academy, where they can dance, play soccer, or play tennis under the tutelage of a celebrity coach. The excellent Marco Polo Kids Club also keeps young ones entertained.
Food-wise, Sun Gardens spoils you with a choice of 16 restaurants and bars. Enjoy a gourmet buffet breakfast on the terrace at Giardino or
Just 20 minutes outside the city in the sleepy village of Orašac, Sun Gardens Dubrovnik is a mesmeric five-star resort that places you in the tranquil heart of the Riviera. Featuring every indulgent amenity you could wish for, this Mediterranean villagestyle complex is as perfect for family breaks as it is for romantic getaways.
Nestled in the pine-scented grounds of a former palazzo (where Florentine politician Piero Soderini was driven into exile by the Medicis in 1512), the hotel offers sublime views of the Elaphiti Islands from your balcony or terrace. Whether you’re staying in a room, suite, residence, or stunning five-bedroom private villa, you’ll awake to silky sea breezes and end your days with aperitifs at golden hour.

SAVOR
Speaking of food, fall in Dubrovnik means one thing: harvest. It’s a time when the city’s kitchens lean into the rhythm of the land. Menus shift in tone and tempo, offering sun-warmed figs, wild mushrooms foraged from forested hills, slowbraised meats infused with herbs, and olive oil pressed just days before from groves a stone’s throw away.
For a culinary experience that matches the view, Restaurant 360 delivers Michelin-starred magic in the most dramatic setting: perched beside St. John’s Fortress, with the city’s ancient walls
as your backdrop and the sea lapping below. The menu features top-tier Dalmatian seafood elevated with fine dining finesse — think mackerel with trout caviar or scallops delicately paired with tofu mousse.
Prefer something warmer and more intimate? Pantarul (which means “fork” in the local dialect) is a beloved local haunt with a dining room that feels like a friend’s home. Its seasonal menu is a love letter to autumn; the vegetable risotto kissed with herbs tastes like Dubrovnik in a single spoonful.
And what’s a feast without a toast? Wine runs deep in Croatian history — this is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, dating back 2,000 years to the Illyrians and the Greeks. The region is known for its unique varietals such as Plavac Mali, a robust red, and Pošip, a crisp white from nearby Korcula. The best place to sample a drop? D’Vino Wine Bar is tucked into a quiet alley of the Old Town. At this charmingly rustic spot, you can sample flights of local vintages paired with artisanal cheese and olives, or you can let the knowledgeable staff guide you through the best of Croatian terroir.
No culinary pilgrimage would be complete without a trip to Mali Ston Bay, just 30 miles from Dubrovnik. This coastal town is famed for producing what many say are the best oysters in the world. Harvested from the clean, mineral-rich waters of the Pelješac peninsula, these delicacies are best enjoyed raw with a splash of lemon and a glass of chilled white wine as the sun dips into the sea. Dubrovnik Wine Tours runs half-day tours to Mali Ston Bay.
As the air crisps, Dubrovnik’s cultural pulse quickens. Mark your calendar and book your flights now.

YOUR FRONT-ROW SEAT TO FALL ON THE PLATEAU

FALL DOESN’T SNEAK INTO THE HIGHLANDS-CASHIERS PLATEAU — IT ARRIVES WITH A FLOURISH. ONE MORNING, THE AIR IS CRISPER AND THE LIGHT IS A LITTLE SOFTER, AND THE NEXT, THE MOUNTAINS HAVE TRADED THEIR SUMMER GREEN FOR A RIOT OF RED, ORANGE, AND GOLD. FROM LATE SEPTEMBER THROUGH EARLY NOVEMBER, THIS ELEVATED STRETCH OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA OFFERS SOME OF THE MOST DAZZLING LEAF-PEEPING IN
START WITH THE VIEWS
There’s no shortage of jaw-dropping vistas here, but a few spots stand out for their panoramic splendor. The Rhodes Big View Overlook is a favorite among locals and photographers alike. Not only does it offer a sweeping look across the valley below, but it also plays host to a unique fall phenomenon: the “Shadow of the Bear.” On clear afternoons from mid-October to early November, the angle of the sun and the contours of Whiteside Mountain combine to cast a shadow in the unmistakable shape of a bear padding across the landscape — a fleeting, magical reminder of nature’s whimsy.
Other scenic stops include the aptly named Blue Valley Overlook, where the layers of Appalachian peaks stretch out like rippling fabric, and Sunset Rock, which is a short hike from downtown Highlands and offers exactly what its name promises, especially in autumn light.
LAKESIDE LEAF-PEEPING
For a different vantage point, get out on the water. Our mountain lakes — Lake Glenville, Fairfield Lake, Lake Sequoyah, and Lake Toxaway — are serene in any season, but in the fall, they become pools of mirrored color. Rent a kayak, take a boat ride, or simply sit dockside and watch the trees show off.

OPPOSITE: THE ICONIC SHADOW OF THE BEAR AND WHITESIDE MOUNTAIN VIEWS FROM RHODES BIG VIEW OVERLOOK
There’s no better time to hit the trails. Cooler temperatures and a fresh palette of colors make hiking in the fall a must. For a quick adventure with a payoff, try the Whiteside Mountain Trail or stroll to Silver Run Falls. Want something longer? Explore the meadows and waterfalls of Panthertown Valley or venture into Gorges State Park. The Cullasaja River Trail is another favorite, especially when flanked by golden leaves and accompanied by the soundtrack of rushing water. For more trail recommendations, check out the Plateau Guide — your perfect companion for all things local.
If hiking boots aren’t your thing, you can still experience the season in all its glory from the comfort of your car. Whiteside Cove Road and Dillard Road (North Carolina Highway 106) both wind through gorgeous terrain and offer spectacular views, while Highlands Road (U.S. 64 West) offers a fall driving experience you won’t forget. This route hugs the Cullasaja River Gorge and passes several waterfalls — Bridal Veil Falls, Dry Falls, Bust Your Butt Falls, and Cullasaja Falls — each framed by brilliant fall foliage.
Don’t miss the annual Cashiers Valley Leaf Festival at The Village Green — a joyful gathering of art, music, and mountain flavor that brings 100 artisans to town, all set against a backdrop of autumn’s best.
Whether you’re hiking a ridge, floating on a lake, or chasing shadows across the valley floor, fall on the Plateau invites you to linger just a little longer.

At the turn of the 20th century, Willis and Laura Sims settled in a high valley with clear 40-mile vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains in the west. They built a rustic mountain home, lived off the land, and raised their six children here. Today, the valley is home to Sims Valley — a unique mountain community built in the same spirit as the Sims family homestead. It is a place of beauty, a place for families, and a place where residents live in harmony with the nature that surrounds them.
Located between the historic towns of Cullowhee and Cashiers, Sims Valley provides its homeowners with the feeling of living within a national park, rather than a resort community. Intersected by winding nature trails, designed by Trail Dynamics (who often designs for the National Park Service), Sims Valley offers many opportunities to let their residents’ spirits soar with the natural splendor that is housed within this one-of-a-kind property. The peaceful sound of cascading waterfalls, the exotic fragrance of mountain laurel and native wildflowers, and the awe-inspiring sight of the Smokies blend together for an exceptional outdoor experience. Go shopping or dining in Cashiers or Highlands, explore Nantahala National Forest, take a boat ride on Lake Glenville, or enjoy the many amenities that Sims Valley has to offer.
The Sims family homestead still stands and now serves as a community gathering place. In fact, there is no shortage of places for the community to gather together at Sims Valley. The Mountain Clubhouse contains a fitness center and spa, swimming pool, large great room with fireplace, caterer’s kitchen, outdoor grill, and two outdoor fireplaces, paired with some of the most amazing views available at the property. The Mountain Chapel — located at the north end of the property — offers an open-air gathering place for Sims Valley residents to enjoy a picnic, a roaring fire in the outdoor fireplace, or a breathtaking vista of the valley and the mountains beyond.

You may not consider yourself a “morning person,” but there are some moments that make waking up with the sun worth an extra cup of coffee.
STEP OUTSIDE IN THE FIRST FROSTY MOMENTS OF THE CHEROKEE MORNING, AND YOU MAY SEE (OR HEAR) A GLIMPSE OF THE MOUNTAINS’ MOST MAJESTIC RESIDENT — THE NORTH CAROLINA ELK.
It’s easy to overlook the presence of elk, but once you learn a little about their story, every sighting becomes something worth waking up a bit earlier for.
What began as a conservation effort to restore a lost local species has since grown into nearly 200 elk roaming the valleys and meadows around Cherokee.
After a 200-year absence from the Appalachians, these gentle giants have staged one of conservation’s best comeback stories. Swing by the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and River Trail or the Mingus Mill Area, and you might just see one of these incredible stories of modern conservation for yourself.
To appreciate the beauty of a Cherokee elk sighting, one must delve into their history. Elk were once dominant in the region, but overhunting and habitat loss largely erased them from the Appalachian region by the late 1700s.
The 200 years since have seen the mountains largely empty of the bull elk’s bugling calls — an incredibly haunting sound somewhere between a piercing whistle and an otherworldly scream. These calls used to echo across the valleys as massive, 700-pound bull elk would clash for dominance.
In February 2001, 25 elk made their way from Kentucky’s Land Between the Lakes to the Cataloochee Valley in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Fitted with radio collars and closely monitored, these elk were the vanguard of an ambitious reintroduction program.
The first group thrived — even producing calves within the first year — and wildlife officials knew that they were onto something special. A second group of 27 elk from Canada joined the first set in 2002.
What began as 52 carefully watched creatures has since blossomed into a local population exceeding 200 elk across multiple herds. The elk have started to reclaim their ancestral home, expanding from Cataloochee to Cherokee, Maggie Valley, and beyond.
Today’s visitors to Cherokee have the chance to witness living proof that conservation efforts work.
While the elk follow their own timeline, September and October bring out the area’s natural theater. During the fall rut, bull elk emerge in the meadows along the Oconaluftee River and start a primal competition that can be heard for miles.
Early risers and sunset seekers have the best chance to see elk in person. If you head up to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center — just three miles north of Cherokee on US 441 — you can find one of the Southeast’s most accessible wildlife viewing areas.
At peak season, rangers often block off a lane where those with cameras, binoculars, or just a curious eye can try to catch a glimpse of the elk (from a safe and required 150-foot distance).
The shared sense of awe among the watchers is worth the visit — strangers sharing spotting scopes or parents pointing out shadows of “could-be-elk” in the distance. It’s a moment when the creativity of nature reclaims our sense of wonder.
Seasoned viewers will encourage newcomers to come prepared with warm clothes and loose expectations. Most mornings bring the simple pleasure of a cow and calf grazing in the sunrise.
But if nature sends a bit of luck your way, you may catch sight of an elk herd moving through the meadow — or a dramatic, antlerclashing duel between two giant bull elk vying to lead the growing herds.
What makes Cherokee’s elk particularly delightful is their unpredictability. While the Oconaluftee meadows remain their favorite stage, these free-roamers can be spotted wading in the river or even swaggering proudly through downtown Cherokee.
Every elk you find grazing in the meadows on a misty Cherokee morning represents proof of conservation’s restorative power. Cherokee’s herds are the result of decades of planning and partnerships between agencies that believed what was once lost can be reclaimed and restored.
You’re invited to visit and see this living success story yourself — and if you’re lucky, you may get to hear the dawn-piercing bugle of a bull elk.
Some experiences are worth that extra cup of coffee. This is definitely one of them!

In the heart of the Swiss Alps, where snow-capped peaks form the backdrop for the grandeur of the world’s most exclusive ski resort, St. Moritz has long been the embodiment of refined luxury. Its allure draws the discerning and the elite, those who know that true sophistication is not about excess but about quiet restraint, impeccable taste, and the legacy of craftsmanship. Here, amid stunning vistas, a new generation of men has emerged, forging a path that bridges the gap between old-world grace and the demands of modern living. They are the sartorial gentlemen of St. Moritz, curating a lifestyle that speaks of not only heritage but also refined, forward-looking elegance.
Florian Thoeni, Fabrizio D’Aloisio, Richard Gauntlett, Silvano Vitalini, and Vasco Branschi all pay homage to one of the great sartorial legends of all time in the Alps — Gianni Agnelli, who espoused the ultimate in gentleman’s code on the Swiss Alps.
Born and raised in Switzerland, Vasco is a prime example of the new breed of gentlemen who understand that true luxury is about authenticity and elegance, not ostentation. Vasco is the founder of Artworth Brothers, a boutique digital agency that works with some of the world’s most prestigious luxury brands, and his lifestyle embodies the synergy between timeless style and contemporary luxury.
“LUXURY IS NO LONGER ABOUT FLASHY STATEMENTS OR OVERSIZED LOGOS,” VASCO EXPLAINS, LEANING BACK IN HIS CHAIR AT HIS ST. MORITZ HOME, WHICH OVERLOOKS THE VILLAGE AND ITS SURROUNDING SNOW-COVERED PEAKS. “TODAY, IT’S ABOUT CREATING A NARRATIVE — ONE THAT SPEAKS OF HERITAGE, QUALITY, AND AN IMPECCABLE EYE FOR DESIGN. ST. MORITZ HAS ALWAYS EMBODIED THIS, AND I AM THRILLED TO SEE OUR GENERATION EMBRACE IT WITH THEIR OWN TAKE.”
Unlike the loud displays of wealth that often flood the pages of social media, this new generation of men are defined by subtlety, finesse, and a predilection for the classic. Their black book of style is not dictated by trends but by an appreciation for heritage and craftsmanship that stand the test of time. They wear the stories of their families, their cities, and their ancestry like a second skin. And at the top of their list of essentials? Tailored garments, fine watches, bespoke shoes, and a lifestyle that matches the sophistication of their wardrobes.
CURATING
The sartorial gentlemen of St. Moritz do not follow fashion — they define it. In their world, the foundation of style is not rooted in what’s popular but in what has remained relevant for decades, even centuries. For them, it’s about curating a wardrobe that reflects an eye for quality, respect for tradition, and

a willingness to invest in timeless luxury. These men understand that their choices speak volumes before they do.
Kiton, for instance, is a brand synonymous with the pinnacle of hand-tailored sartorial elegance. Founded in Naples in 1968, Kiton is renowned for its exacting craftsmanship. Each suit is constructed by hand, taking as many as 25 hours of labor from master tailors who meticulously ensure the perfect cut, fit, and finish. For the sartorialist in St. Moritz, a Kiton suit is a statement of taste and distinction, offering both mobility and charm in one fluid line. Double-breasted navy suits are the norm and are often worn during formal outings. There is something about the way their garments feel — like they’ve been passed down through generations, yet they still feel entirely modern.
But it’s not just about what is worn on the surface. For the men of St. Moritz, luxury is also about quality craftsmanship and an understanding of materials. The Rolex Submariner — a quintessential piece in any gentleman’s collection — is revered not only for its design but also for its rich history and legacy of mechanical mastery. Vasco’s personal Rolex, the Sea-Dweller from 1993, is as much a family heirloom as it is a functional timepiece. “A good watch tells a story,” Vasco notes. “I’m not wearing it for attention; I wear it because it has history. It was made to last. It’s part of who I am.” This rare breed wants products that are made with care and have a story behind them. Whether it’s a Porsche 911, a Range Rover, or a Rolex Submariner, these are things that don’t change much over the years because their appeal is rooted in their timeless quality, their heritage, and their craftsmanship.
What truly sets this new generation apart is their understanding that style is not confined to the clothes they wear but extends to the lifestyle they cultivate. These men have inherited the taste of their ancestors, but they’ve updated it for today’s world. In St. Moritz, it’s not enough to simply wear a tailored suit; one must also live with an air of refined purpose — whether it’s enjoying a quiet afternoon on the slopes or attending a private dinner at La Marmite, the village’s most exclusive dining venue.
“The way you carry yourself is as important as the way you dress,” says Vasco. “An appreciation for detail runs in my family. My grandfather and father worked in the watch industry in Biel/Bienne, and through conversations with designers and collectors, I learned that true luxury is about craftsmanship and respect for heritage.”
These sartorial men of St. Moritz live their lives with intention. Whether they’re skiing on the iconic slopes or relaxing at the many exclusive five-star hotels, they do so with grace, distinction, and impeccable taste.
Their leisure pursuits — often centered around skiing, classic car rallies at the ICE St. Moritz, snow polo, golfing, or shooting — are as much about discipline and tradition as they are about relaxation. These are activities that demand precision, skill, and a deep understanding of etiquette. The true test of style lies not in the clothes you wear but in the way you engage with the world around you.
Similarly, Silvano Vitalini’s hand-finished suits — particularly the Engadine Blazer — have become a symbol of St. Moritz sophistication. Crafted in the heart of the Alps, these blazers combine traditional wool with unstructured designs, offering both comfort and style. Vitalini’s garments are a nod to the past, yet they are thoroughly contemporary in their fit and construction.
Footwear is equally important, and Santoni loafers provide the perfect blend of comfort and elegance for the discerning gentleman. Handmade in Italy, these shoes are a staple for the man who values premium quality and understated luxury. Their versatility
“I LEARNED THAT TRUE
IS ABOUT CRAFTSMANSHIP AND RESPECT
To understand this urbane world of St. Moritz’s sartorial gentlemen, one must look beyond the fabric and into the history that shapes their choices. Their wardrobes are composed of carefully selected, enduring brands that speak to the longevity of style.
One such brand is Cashmere House Lamm, a name that has defined St. Moritz’s knitwear scene since 1935. Known for their sumptuous sweaters, wraps, and scarves, Lamm’s pieces reflect the town’s aristocratic heritage, while their commitment to ethical craftsmanship aligns with today’s growing demand for sustainability. For the modern gentleman of St. Moritz, a piece from Lamm is an investment in comfort, quality, and tradition.
allows them to be worn from the slopes to the dinner table, seamlessly fitting into every facet of life in St. Moritz.
Whatever pretension there may be, it quickly evolves into the understanding that for the sartorial gentlemen of St. Moritz, it is not about showing wealth; rather, it is about embodying quiet elegance. The items in their black books — whether it’s a vintage Rolex, a Kiton suit, Loro Piana casual wear, or a bespoke pair of Santoni loafers — are choices of a lifestyle curated with intention, respect for tradition, and a keen eye for detail.
In St. Moritz, this new generation of gentlemen continues to shape what it means to be truly refined — curating their wardrobes, their lives, and their legacies with an impeccable sense of taste that transcends time.
