BELOW: TWENTY-TIME GRAND SLAM CHAMPION ROGER
WONDERS.
ROGER FEDERER
Welcome to the watch world’s Met Gala, Davos, and Paris Fashion Week all rolled into one, where CEOs in cashmere and TikTokers with selfie sticks collided in a swirl of gold, sapphire crystal, and hashtags. And at the heart of it all? A wave of jawdropping modern heirlooms, so watch out as we preview the incredible fresh releases you’ll want to keep your eye on.
THE CELEB CIRCUIT
Watches and Wonders is where haute horology meets Hollywood. Actress Simone Ashley turned heads (and wrists) in Chanel’s latest jeweled timepiece. Meanwhile, Olympic royalty Roger Federer and Usain Bolt appeared in their natural habitat, surrounded by Swiss precision. Composer Hans Zimmer floated between booths like a conductor surveying an orchestra of ticking wonders. And when Carl Lewis smiled beside a skeletonized Vacheron Constantin, the flashbulbs went off like paparazzi at a royal wedding.
A PLATFORM FOR TIME AND TRADITION
As Cyrille Vigneron, president of the Watches and Wonders Geneva Foundation, suavely put it, the event is no longer simply a showcase; it’s a platform. It’s not just for showing off complications and cases, but for sharing a common passion. And passion there was.
The In the City program brought horology to the masses, with Geneva’s boutiques buzzing until 9 p.m. and the Quai du Général-Guisan transforming into a lakeside nightclub courtesy of French electro duo Bon Entendeur.
Workshops sold out faster than you can say “limited edition tourbillion,” and nearly 10,000 young people explored microtechnology careers, crafting their first watch parts with the same reverence as one might handle holy relics.
THE WATCHES TO WATCH
Of the tsunami of releases unveiled at Watches and Wonders, a few stood above the rest. These are the wrist-bound revelations that you’ll want on your radar — and on your wrist.
ROLEX LAND-DWELLER
Let’s start with the bombshell. Rolex’s stunning LandDweller is its first new collection in over a decade — leaked days before the fair via Roger Federer’s Instagram account (accidentally, of course…).
Combining the sporty Sea-Dweller lineage with the angular charm of the vintage Oysterquartz, the Land-Dweller sports a honeycomb dial and integrated Jubilee bracelet. But the real revelation is inside: the new Caliber 7135 with the cutting-edge Dynapulse escapement.
Available in 36 mm and 40 mm, this watch is as much a design evolution as it is a mechanical revolution. Prices start at $13,900.

PATEK
PHILIPPE CALATRAVA 6196P
Proof that simplicity, when executed perfectly, is the ultimate flex, Patek’s new Calatrava 6196P with a salmon dial and platinum case is whisper-quiet luxury. No gimmicks. Just pedigree, proportion, and polish. Price: $47,130. Understated elegance? Absolutely. But expect collector demand to be anything but quiet.
TAG HEUER FORMULA 1 SOLARGRAPH + MONACO SPLIT-SECONDS CHRONOGRAPH
TAG Heuer owned the “cool kid” lane at Watches and Wonders this year. The Formula 1 Solargraph — available in nine colorways — is a solar-powered homage to the brand’s 1986 lineup. It needs just two minutes of sunlight to run all day. Perfect for those who like their style sustainable.
Meanwhile, the Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph brings the brand’s racing DNA into the future, with the ultralight TH81-00 movement housed in ceramic and sapphire. Both watches scream speed, innovation, and swagger. Prices are available on request.
TIMEPIECE TRENDS
This year’s dominant themes at Watches and Wonders? Skeletonization, as embodied by visible gear trains, smaller case sizes (36 mm is the new 44), and a veritable salmon run of pink-toned dials.
Also notable: a surge in solar and sustainable innovation, signaling that even the most traditional maisons are tuning in to tomorrow.
Women’s watches received overdue attention, particularly in the jeweled category — think Van Cleef & Arpels’ poetic complications and Piaget’s blinged-out masterpieces.
HOW TO BUY
Most of these watches won’t just be sitting in your local boutique. So, how do you acquire the wrist candy of your dreams?
AUTHORIZED DEALERS:
Start here. Build a relationship. Buy what you love — but don’t be surprised if you’re offered a Datejust before a Daytona. Play the long game. Windsor Jewelers in Charlotte, NC is the authorized dealer for brands like Patek Phillipe and Rolex.
BOUTIQUE EXCLUSIVES:
Brands such as Cartier and Jaeger-LeCoultre reserve some pieces for flagship locations. Insider tip: Geneva, Paris, and New York get early allocations.
WAITLISTS:
Yes, they’re real. And yes, they’re long. Especially for Rolex and Patek. Patience (and perhaps a purchase history) is key.
SECONDARY MARKETS:
Reputable auction platforms such as WatchBox, Chrono24, and Phillips can yield gems. Closer to home, head to Asheville’s Spicer Greene Jewelers. Its Watches on Wall Street specializes in sourcing the most desirable and hardest-to-find pre-owned pieces, from Rolex and Franck Muller to Patek Philippe and Baume & Mercier.
SALON PREORDERS:
If you’re attending Watches and Wonders in the future, be ready to move fast. Some brands allow VIP preorders during the event.

IF IT’S HAPPENING, IT’S AT HAPP’S PLACE
word S by brad bartlett photography by nc living magazine
here’s a saying in Glenville that you shouldn’t take Happ’s Place at face value based on the view from the parking lot.
From the front, the modest brown building offers no hints about the world behind its walls. Those two cinder-block walls and the simple entrance have fooled many. Step through the doors, and you’ll find picnic tables on patios, a putting green, live music stages, and enough space to host just about any event you can imagine.
The same could be said for what Happ’s Place has become to the Jackson County community. This humble restaurant has grown over the past few years, expanding its reputation from a local dive into a community “third place,” a spot where people from all walks of life can come together and relax.
Since reopening in 2021, Happ’s Place has become the heartbeat of Glenville, pumping life into a town that needed somewhere for its stories to unfold. And part of its secret to success started with an unexpected hire.
FROM SURVIVAL TO REVIVAL
When General Manager Derek Franks looks back at the early days of reopening Happ’s Place, he doesn’t mince words about the challenge.
“Opening up was tough, getting staffed, and making sure we were ready to go,” he recalls. “We were just trying to operate the four walls of the restaurant and do things well here.”
Franks and his team already faced a monumental task in honoring a beloved 25-year legacy while creating something new. But after eight years of Happ’s Place sitting empty, the management could barely keep the doors open, let alone expand their vision for what the restaurant could become.
“We couldn’t really do much except operate the restaurant,” Franks admits. It was pure survival mode: serve the food, pour the drinks, keep the lights on, and hope for better days.
Then came a hire that changed everything — a cart boy from Mountaintop Country Club looking for restaurant work. On the face of the matter, there was nothing special about this. After all, students at Western Carolina University looking for local work weren’t unusual. But there was something different about this hire.
“He was up here every day while we were rebuilding, helping us paint and carry wood. The kid was phenomenal,” Franks says.
“We want to be the best place to work for these younger people up here,” Franks explains. “Great people attract great people.”
BUILDING COMMUNITY ONE CONNECTION AT A TIME
Each year since 2021, Happ’s Place has added something new — a food truck for Groovin’ on The Green in Cashiers, trolleys for weddings, and expanded catering services. But these aren’t just revenue streams; they’re how Happ’s Place carries its third-place ethos beyond its walls.
The trolleys, born from a practical need in an area without Uber or taxis, have become rolling ambassadors for the Happ’s Place philosophy. They do more than ferry wedding guests; they bring the community to the restaurant’s doorstep.
The rebirth of Happ’s Place required more than capital. It needed the energy and versatility of its
student workforce. The same server who takes your order might drive your wedding party the next night, then help set up the food truck at the Christmas tree farm come December.
This flexibility has allowed Happ’s Place to be everywhere at once, including hosting the Cashiers Burger Week awards, partnering with Friends of Lake Glenville for cleanup parties, and even showing up with free food in Asheville after Hurricane Helene.
“We’re constantly doing and adding different things,” Franks says. “We’ve become a big partner in the community.”
What started as a desperate need for servers has evolved into a model for how restaurants can act as community anchors when the world feels increasingly fractured.
“We’ve created a place where everybody from all walks of life can come together and enjoy hanging out. We wanted to create an atmosphere where the guy building the house sits next to the guy buying that house at the bar. Happ’s Place has become a spot to kick back, relax, and get high-quality food and drink with even higher-quality service. This is the place.”
Happ’s Place is slinging great food and drinks in Glenville, but it’s also creating a way to show just how powerful a gathering spot can be when you invest in the right people and let them help write the story. If it’s happening in Glenville, it’s definitely happening at Happ’s Place — and everyone’s invited.
Stop by 5914 N.C. Highway 107 in Glenville to enjoy wood-fired pizzas, chef-inspired creations, and community spirit seven days a week during peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day). For current hours and the live music schedule, visit happsplace.com or call (828) 743-5700.

REDISCOVERING FORMER INTERESTS & FINDING NEW PASSIONS
word S by dawn lile S photography by nc living magazine
FOR MOST OF US, CHILDHOOD IS A TIME OF SELF-DISCOVERY AND EXPLORING DIVERSE INTERESTS. FULL OF ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM, AND WITH ALMOST NO FEAR OF FAILURE, WE MOVE FROM ACTIVITY TO ACTIVITY IN SEARCH OF A PASSION TO CALL OUR OWN. BUT AS TIME AND RESPONSIBILITIES TAKE OVER OUR DAY-TO-DAY LIVES, MANY OF US LOSE OUR SENSE OF WONDER AND PLAYFULNESS. ONE OF THE HALLMARKS OF AGING BOLDLY IS REDISCOVERING PASSIONS FROM OUR YOUTH OR FINDING NEW AVENUES TO EXPLORE ONCE FREE TIME IS MORE ABUNDANT. IT CAN BE A MAGICAL TIME IN LIFE IF WE’RE WILLING TO TRY NEW ACTIVITIES WITHOUT JUDGMENT.
STAYING OPEN TO POSSIBILITIES
Local artist and teacher Cath Connolly Hudson showed a talent for art as a little girl growing up in the United Kingdom, and she found a particular proclivity for oil and acrylic painting.
“I come from an artistic family of six kids,” explains Hudson. “Everyone was either an artist or a musician, and my parents encouraged all of us to be creative.”
Hudson’s parents moved the family to Indianapolis when she was in middle school. She ended up at the University of California, Santa Barbara, for college and stayed in California for several years. She met her husband, a photographer, and they eventually made their way to Raleigh, where they raised their three children in addition to traveling extensively for her job and volunteering at a women’s shelter. Marriage, raising children, and holding down a big job with a software company left little time for painting.
But she knew one day she would get back to it, because “art is just part of who I am.” Over the years, she’s researched art classes online and traveled to different parts of the country by herself to join other painters in immersive workshops. At her core, she never stops learning and is always seeking inspiration. For one series of recent paintings, she decided she wanted to paint dahlias. Unable to find a good subject to work with, she grew her own, posed and photographed them, and studied the photos to create several paintings.
Hudson and her husband discovered Highlands in 2016 and bought a house in 2019. She connected with other artists at The Bascom: a Center for the Visual Arts and began teaching painting classes.
Hudson views art not as a hobby but as a way of thinking. She is constantly exploring the world around her and never misses a chance when traveling, particularly in Europe, to stop in a museum, a gallery, or a cathedral to view the work of other artists. For her, painting is not just documenting what she sees but a means of interpreting the world around her based on her visions and experiences.
Her advice to anyone is to “go make art. You don’t have to wait to retire to do it. Keep exploring and learning.” Hudson is fascinated by technology, and her latest interest is to use Google Earth to explore the world and give her a different perspective for her paintings.
There truly are not enough hours in the day for Hudson to explore all her interests, which include teaching yoga and recently serving as president of the Highlands-Mountaintop Rotary Club. She admits she has sometimes spread herself a little too thin, so she has pulled back a bit and poured her energy into the things that matter most to her. But observing the world and staying open to possibilities are things she knows she will pursue the rest of her life.
Hudson’s paintings are available on her website, www.cathconnolly.com. A few select pieces are also available to purchase at The Bascom.
FINDING A NEW PASSION AFTER 50
As the saying goes, “Couples who fly fish together, stay together.” Right? It’s certainly true for Edwin and Maureen “Moe” Kohn, who were looking for a new activity to enjoy together after the last of their three sons left home for college eight years ago.
“We bought our vacation home in Cashiers in 2017,” explains Moe, “and we learned that this area is considered a ‘fly fishing capital.’ That was enough to motivate us to try it out.
We both cycle, run, and hike, but fly fishing is the only activity where Edwin isn’t slowing down for me, and we can keep pace with each other. I feel the playing field is also more level on the stream. The stronger, more athletic ones aren’t always more successful in catching trout!”
Edwin, a naval aviator and third generation military pilot with a busy career in the financial services industry, acknowledges his competitive nature but says he was pleasantly surprised to find “more joy in breaking out the camera to take a picture of someone else, like friends and family, catching a fish or helping someone else fish rather than trying to catch the most fish on an outing. And I really enjoy seeing my wife excel in this sport.
The couple divide their time between Camden, South Carolina, and their home in Cashiers. Their first fly fishing adventure was with a guide from Brooking Anglers-Cashiers, who took them on the Tuckasegee River.
“Regrettably,” says Moe, “that first time fly fishing, I slipped on the rocks and broke my wrist. I felt very invested in the sport after that,” she jokes. That might have ended another person’s venture into a new sport, but she wasn’t deterred. Since that initial experience, the couple has occasionally hired local guides to coach them. Moe has taken a full-day private class, and together, the couple took a day-long group fly fishing basics class.
THE CHALLENGES AND BENEFITS OF LEARNING A NEW SPORT
Since breaking her wrist on the water, Moe is understandably a bit hesitant walking across the slippery rocks in the streams. “We often have to scramble up and down steep banks and walk through trees and high brush to access the water. And women are still the minority in fly fishing. I learned that I am comfortable enough with myself to feel a part of the group, even if the group consists of all men.” She adds that a teachable attitude is also necessary, as is an appreciation for the environment.
Edwin explains that the hardest part for him, outside of getting flies stuck in the trees, is figuring out which flies to use and which combinations. “But that is part of the mental challenge that I also find beneficial, especially as we age,” he adds.
Both agree that the benefits of the sport far outweigh the challenges. “Fly fishing is very therapeutic,” explains Moe. “Every time we go, we are in extremely beautiful areas surrounded by forests. The sound of the moving water creates a sense of calm.”
On the days the fish are not biting for them, they still love the experience. “Often when I am fishing, I look in awe at my surroundings and thank God for His creation — the clean water, the waterfalls, the gorgeous sky, the fresh air — and acknowledge the unique way we in Western North Carolina are blessed,” says Moe.
Edwin particularly enjoys the surrounding environment where they fish and that it is truly an activity they enjoy doing together. “Whether it’s
the fishing part, watching YouTube videos about fishing, taking lessons together, or fishing on our travels, it has been a wonderful, unexpected addition to our marriage. Casting the fly and watching it float downstream is very therapeutic for me. I also enjoy taking the dog with me when I go fishing. He stays right by my side and loves being in the water as much as I do.”
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Often, finding new activities and opportunities to pursue as we get older can be a challenge. “I think it takes more intention now to find and try new things, “says Moe. “Instead of our world shrinking around us, we want to keep expanding it by learning new things and getting out of our comfort zone.”
The couple enjoys the sport so much, they have become what they call “fly fishing tourists.” No matter where they travel on vacation, they book a
local fly fishing guide and fish the closest streams to where they are staying. That has been an extra fun way for them to see more of the areas they visit and experience fly fishing in a variety of locations and cultures.
Adds Edwin, “All three of our boys and our daughter-in-law now fly fish, and when we get together for Thanksgiving in the mountains, our tradition is to run a 5K, go fly fishing, and then come back and have a simple meal cooking steaks on the grill. No sweating over the stove. We even bought extra gear and keep it at the cottage so when we have friends visit, we can take them in the water.”

IF THERE’S ONE THING HBO’S “THE WHITE LOTUS” EXCELS AT, IT’S MAKING US DESPERATELY WANT TO BOOK A FLIGHT TO WHEREVER ITS LATEST SEASON IS SET. THIS YEAR, THAT DESTINATION IS KOH SAMUI — THAILAND’S EMERALD JEWEL IN THE GULF OF THAILAND. NOW CEMENTED AS THE PLANET’S HOTTEST DESTINATION, KOH SAMUI IS OFFICIALLY HAVING ITS MAIN-CHARACTER MOMENT.
“THE WHITE LOTUS” EFFECT
KOH SAMUI SECRETS
word S by ellen jone S
HE HOTEL THAT STARTED IT ALL
While the third season of “The White Lotus” may be serving up its signature blend of scandal and satire, its backdrop is pure, unadulterated luxury. The fictional hotel where the Ratliff family drama unfolds is the resplendent Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, a sublime sanctuary perched on a private bay on the island’s northwestern tip.
Sprawling over 40 acres of a former coconut plantation, the Four Seasons appears woven into the tropical hillside. Hundreds of thatched rooftops peek through swaying palms, blending so effortlessly into the landscape that you’d think nature itself designed them.
Opt for a teak-clad suite villa, which is complete with a private infinity pool that appears to spill straight into the gulf. Or make like Michelle Monaghan and Jason Isaacs by staying in a palatial private residence (or as Isaacs called it, “a surreally, absurdly luxurious villa for billionaires”). This package includes kitchenettes, panoramic ocean views, and a personal assistant to anticipate your every desire.
ISLAND-HOPPING
Long before “The White Lotus” turned Koh Samui into TV’s most covetable destination, its mesmeric Ang Thong National Marine Park was immortalized in “The Man with the Golden Gun” and later inspired Alex Garland’s “The Beach,” which starred a young, sun-kissed Leonardo DiCaprio. With its dramatic limestone cliffs and jade-green lagoons, this striking archipelago comprises 42 untouched islets, which are cast like jewels across the Gulf.
Island-hopping here is a rite of passage. Charter a private yacht, take a speedboat tour, or set sail on a traditional Thai longtail boat to Koh Madsum, affectionately known as Pig Island, where cheeky little piglets paddle in the shallows like seasoned vacationers. Then, make your way to Khao Phing Kan — where Bond had his high-stakes shooter showdown with Scaramanga.
Most Ang Thong National Marine Park day cruises include a welcome cocktail and buffet lunch as well as plenty of chances to drop anchor and snorkel among technicolor coral gardens.
FISHERMAN’S VILLAGE
Lining a stretch of beachfront on the northern crest of Koh Samui, Fisherman’s Village embodies old-world Thai charm. Just a few steps from the sands, weathered wooden shop fronts house chic boutiques, artisanal craft stores, and breezy beachside cocktail bars that invite you to linger just a little longer.
Every Friday night, this historic enclave transforms into a lively market scene, and the scent of sizzling street food fills the air as locals and tourists browse an eclectic mix of handicrafts, textiles, and island-inspired treasures.
The production team on “The White Lotus” transformed Fisherman’s Village into a stand-in for the famous Full Moon Party haven of Haad Rin. Although you certainly won’t be rubbing shoulders with thousands of bug-eyed revelers, you will discover an atmosphere that’s vibrant yet laid-back, where sunset cocktails seamlessly turn into long, leisurely dinners under the glow of lantern-lit terraces.
HIKE TO HIDDEN WONDERS
For the intrepid hiker, Koh Samui provides breathtaking trails through verdant jungles via tumbling waterfalls and coastal panoramas. Starting near Namuang Safari Park is the trail to Na Muang Waterfalls, where emerald pools provide the perfect post-hike dip. The trail winds through dense tropical foliage before revealing
two cascading waterfalls: Na Muang 1, which is easily accessible, and Na Muang 2, which requires a bit more effort but is well worth it for the lush, jungle-framed views and the refreshing water tumbling into natural rock pools.
More adventurous hikers can take on Khao Hua Jook Pagoda for a stunning 360-degree vantage point over the island. This hilltop temple, located near Chaweng, is a short but steep hike from the main road, spoiling trekkers with uninterrupted views of the coastline, airport, and lush island interior.
SAVOR SAMUI
Thai cuisine is all about contrast — fiery meets fragrant, tangy clashes with sweet — and, somehow, it all just works. Be it the punchy kick of tom yum soup or the mellow depth of a slowcooked green curry, every dish is a masterclass in umami-like balance. Whether you’re savoring fragrant gaeng massaman nua curry at the Four Seasons’ excellent Koh Thai Kitchen or inhaling a street-side bowl of noodles, the island’s food scene is exceptional — from haute to hawker.
Located just outside Fisherman’s Village, 2 Fishes on the Beach became a firm favorite with “The White Lotus” cast while filming. Marrying the best of Thai seafood with Italian sensibilities, Chef Leandro presents handmade pasta and perfectly grilled local fish in a beautiful beachside setting with front-row sunset views.
For something more classically Thai, book a table at Kapi Sator in Bo Put on the eastern side of the island. This Michelin-hyped eatery is the first to own a Bib Gourmand on Koh Samui, so expect
powerful, taste-bud-igniting notes in its lobster with signature kapi (shrimp) paste and sator (tropical beans) dish.
SACRED SAMUI
Buddhism came to Thailand as early as the third century B.C.E. in the time of the Indian Emperor Ashoka, and Koh Samui is peppered with ornate temples, towering Buddha statues, and centuriesold shrines that reflect its deep spiritual roots. For a hit of the island’s spiritual side, head to Dusit Dheva Cultural Center, which is tucked away in the island’s lush interior near Lipa Noi. Part museum and part temple, this hidden trove of Thai artisanship is where intricately carved wooden deities and gilded sculptures whisper tales of Buddhist lore.
Near Bang Rak Beach on the northeastern tip of the island, the Big Buddha Temple stands as Koh Samui’s most iconic landmark. Perched on its own little islet and connected by a causeway, the towering, 12-meter golden Buddha gazes out over the gulf with an air of serene omniscience. Arrive at sunrise for the monks’ morning chants, or come later to light incense and make an offering. Between the hypnotic clang of temple bells and the sweeping ocean views, these sacred sites offer a soul-soothing contrast to the island’s more indulgent pleasures.
• Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Japan Airlines fly from Charlotte Douglas International Airport to international hubs in Tokyo, Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Singapore. From your chosen hub, you can get a connecting flight to Koh Samui.
• The peak season (December-April) offers sunshine and calm seas. Monsoon season (October-November) may mean sudden downpours.
• In Koh Samui, the Thai Baht is king. Credit cards are widely accepted, but cash is handy for markets and small vendors.
• Pack plenty of beachwear and light clothing for the day and elevated resort wear for the night. Keep it modest when visiting temples.
• Arrange a private driver to chauffeur you around the island at klook. com or mrsamui.com.
• A polite wai (hands pressed together) goes a long way, but never touch anyone’s head, as it’s considered sacred.

BROKER SPOTLIGHT WITH JONATHAN HOUGH
photography by nc living magazine
“I deeply believe in a better way to do real estate — one centered around serving others first and genuinely investing in relationships.” This belief defines Jonathan Hough: a dedicated husband, proud father, engaged community member, and broker at Silver Creek Real Estate Group.
Jonathan is passionate about the people of the Plateau and makes no secret of it. His guiding principle is to always be representing and working to serve others. This simple refrain defines Jonathan’s approach to both business and life — a perfect fit among the like-minded realtors at Silver Creek Real Estate Group.
A BLUEPRINT FOR SUCCESS
Jonathan’s journey to the HighlandsCashiers Plateau began at Western Carolina University, where he met Hannah, the love of his life. Both were university cheerleaders, and after graduating, they moved to Indiana. Even while living there, they chose to return to the mountains of North Carolina to get married — and their journey would eventually bring them back for good.
Jonathan’s father’s entrepreneurial spirit and 30-year legacy as a successful general contractor first sparked his interest in real estate, providing a lasting blueprint for success. “My father taught me that relationships are at the very core of an impactful and lasting business,” he explains. This foundational belief continues to guide Jonathan’s approach today. “Despite shifting markets and evolving business methods, one truth remains constant: Relationships matter most.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, it created the opportunity for Jonathan and Hannah to return to a region that had always felt like home, where they now love raising their children, Walker, Jackson, and Hallie. They chose the Plateau not just for its beauty but for the lifestyle and community it offered their growing family. “We didn’t know what to expect when we moved back,” Jonathan admits. “But the pieces started to come together in a way that felt meant to be.”
A CALLING TO SERVE
Jonathan’s deep commitment to service and willingness to step up quickly helped his family feel at home. When his property experienced flooding and the Homeowners Association fell short in its response, Jonathan didn’t sit back — he joined the board to be part of the solution. “Since then, it’s been about improving property values and helping get our older HOA back into shape.”
When his son’s T-ball team needed a coach, Jonathan didn’t hesitate. “Up here, you have to serve the community,” Jonathan reflects. “It’s not like larger cities where you’d have a hundred coaches lined up.” He has also coached youth soccer, while embracing his role as a hands-on father to Walker, Jackson, and Hallie, and supporting Hannah, who earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice.
As busy as life may seem, Jonathan is always ready for more. He believes that community is built through participation, not observation. “That’s just what we do here on the Plateau: We show up, give our time, and contribute meaningfully to the strength and spirit of our community.”
“I DEEPLY BELIEVE IN A BETTER WAY TO DO REAL ESTATE — ONE CENTERED AROUND SERVING OTHERS FIRST AND .”
Jonathan currently serves on the HighlandsCashiers MLS Board, offering valuable insights into market trends and industry changes for his clients. His experience in real estate industry leadership roles has given him a well-rounded view and understanding of the real estate business — from big-picture strategy to the finer details of contracts, inspections, and negotiations that make or break deals.
“Leadership taught me to see the real estate business from every angle,” Jonathan shares. “While I appreciated those responsibilities, I realized my true passion lies in working directly with clients and building personal relationships.”
This self-awareness led him to seek a brokerage that allows him to focus on his strengths while providing the support needed to deliver exceptional service. “With the backing of Silver Creek,” Jonathan explains, “I’m able to offer a personalized experience for buyers and give sellers a strategic marketing advantage that gets results.”
For Jonathan, real estate is more than a business — it’s a calling to serve. “My mission is to serve people authentically and compassionately, being a steady presence through each meaningful step of their real estate journey while building genuine, lasting relationships.”
A COMMITMENT TO VALUES
Jonathan credits Silver Creek’s innovative marketing and industry foresight for drawing him to the brokerage, where the collaborative environment enhances his ability to foster authentic client relationships. This journey has created a powerful alignment: His personalized approach united with Silver Creek’s established reputation and marketing expertise.
His core values — Serve Others, Earn Everything, Grow Constantly, Win Together, and Always Representing — guide every client interaction. These principles aren’t just professional guidelines; they are personal commitments that extend to all areas of his life.
“Kindness and joy are at the heart of everything I do,” Jonathan says. “I view my work as my ministry — always looking for opportunities to serve others with sincerity and purpose.”
Jonathan approaches his work through a balanced framework focused on five key areas: faith, family, personal growth, financial stewardship, and professional excellence. This mindset keeps him grounded and growing — both personally and professionally.
Personal development drives his commitment to ongoing education and skill-building. “In real estate, you can never stop learning,” he notes. “The market, regulations, and best practices are constantly evolving, and I owe it to my clients to stay ahead of these changes.”
Financial well-being represents both his financial discipline and the responsibility he feels toward helping clients make sound investment decisions. “Real estate is often the largest financial transaction in someone’s life,” Jonathan points out. “I take that responsibility very seriously.”
Professional excellence reflects Jonathan’s commitment to delivering top-tier service in every interaction. His dedication spans from the smallest details to the most complex negotiations — demonstrating his belief that how you handle the little things says everything about how you handle the big ones.
Of his core values, “Always Representing” holds special significance. The phrase first resonated with Jonathan after seeing it modeled by a mentor in the industry. Over time, it evolved into a personal commitment he carries into every aspect of his work. “I carry my brand and my family’s values with pride in all aspects of life and work — not just sometimes, but always. Every interaction is an opportunity to leave a meaningful legacy.”
This service-minded approach extends beyond his clients to fellow real estate professionals. One broker who worked with Jonathan noted, “Jonathan is one of the most impressive brokers I’ve worked with in the past 20 years of my career.”
Clients also describe Jonathan as professional, responsive, and personally invested in every step of the process. As one recent client shared after selling their home in Sapphire: “Jonathan was absolutely fantastic to work with. ... He went above and beyond to make the process smooth and stress-free. He understood our needs and ultimately helped us find a buyer who loved our home as much as we did.”
A COMMUNITY SPIRIT
Jonathan firmly believes in helping all parties achieve a smooth closing and fostering professional goodwill. “Once you’re past the negotiation phase, everyone has the same goal — getting to the closing table smoothly,” he explains.
The decision to join Silver Creek wasn’t made lightly. “I’ve long admired Silver Creek — their independence, vision, and continued innovation in how they serve clients align perfectly with how I operate as a broker.”
This recognition provides a solid foundation for Jonathan’s growing practice and reflects the strong brand reputation that attracted him to the firm. Since joining Silver Creek, Jonathan has brought a refreshing blend of professional expertise, genuine care, and community commitment.
“I’m getting back to my roots — to why I fell in love with this business and the passion I have for it,” he explains. For Jonathan, success isn’t measured in transactions, but in the relationships he builds and the lives he improves. “Every interaction is a chance to listen intentionally, serve genuinely, and build lasting trust.”
With a young family and an exciting chapter at Silver Creek, Jonathan exemplifies the work ethic and vision that define success in the Highlands-Cashiers real estate community. As he looks ahead, his focus remains on serving the community that has warmly welcomed his family.
“When you’re here, everybody leans on each other, supports each other, and helps each other out,” he says. This spirit of mutual support mirrors his approach to real estate — building a network of relationships where everyone benefits from shared success.

CHUCKSELF.NCLIVING.COM
In search of mild temperatures and a place to unwind, Chuck Self made his first visit to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau more than 20 years ago on a summer getaway with his family. During that short visit, Chuck realized that Western North Carolina was where he wanted to be. The desire for the mountain lifestyle led him to search for property in the area for several years until he found the perfect piece of land on which to build a dream home.
Intended to be a second residence until Chuck's retirement, the home soon took precedence; the lure of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains inspired him to say “goodbye” to the intense pace, traffic, and heat of Atlanta when construction was completed. And so, the simplicity and splendor of full-time mountain living began.
A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Chuck enjoyed a successful sales career in the television and entertainment industry, experiencing multiple relocations and finishing as vice president of sales for Raycom Sports in Charlotte and Warner Brothers Television in Atlanta, before parlaying
his corporate experience and skills into real estate more than a decade ago. A University of Missouri alumnus, Chuck is perennially one of the top real estate brokers on the Plateau.
When he’s not helping clients, Chuck enjoys hiking, golfing, fitness activities, cooking, reading, and boating on Lake Glenville. He is an active contributor to the Cashiers community, having previously served in board positions with the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina, and the HighlandsCashiers Board of Realtors. Currently, Chuck serves as the President of the Blue Ridge School Education Foundation. He is a member of the club at Lonesome Valley and Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
He looks forward to mountain visits from his daughter in Atlanta and his son, daughterin-law, and two grandsons in Nashville.

RAYTRINE.NCLIVING.COM
Silver Creek Real Estate Group Broker Ray Trine knows a thing or two about the HighlandsCashiers Plateau. Ray’s passion for real estate is as undeniable as his decades of experience in the industry.
Ray graduated from the University of North Florida in 1971 with a degree in accounting. He went to work for Florida National Bank’s holding company and later became CFO of American Federal Savings and Loan. He worked on financing properties as well as building and development projects, eventually realizing he preferred being out in the field rather than in the office.
Ray quickly obtained his North Carolina license and went to work for one of the oldest real estate firms in the area, V.C. Smith Real Estate. Two years later, in 1984, Ray bought the firm outright and soon became the No. 1 real estate firm in listings and sales in the Cashiers area — an accolade held for many years. After a brief retirement, Ray found his place at Silver Creek Real Estate Group in 2011. Over the 40+ years that he has lived here, he has not only played a prominent role in shaping the area but also in creating everlasting relationships and supporting our community however possible.
Seeking a higher quality of life, Ray visited the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, where he found the tranquility of the mountains to be precisely what he was looking for. The Trine family packed up and bought the farm in Glenville and soon grew their family to include seven daughters and a menagerie of animals.
To anyone he meets, Ray is the quintessential “guide to the Plateau,” offering personal experience, fascinating local narratives, and endless knowledge of the mountain lifestyle. Not only that, but his enthusiasm for this special place is nothing short of infectious. When he’s not out selling real estate, you can find Ray spending time with his daughters, 14 grandchildren, and animals on his farm or enjoying fresh seafood and swimming with manatees in his home away from home, Homosassa, Florida.

BUILDING COMMUNITY LEADERS
THE IMPACT OF LEADERSHIP HIGHLANDS & LEADERSHIP CASHIERS
The strength of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau lies in its people — the dedicated members of the community who preserve its character while guiding its growth. At the heart of this community-building work are Leadership Highlands and Leadership Cashiers, two transformative programs designed to develop thoughtful, engaged leaders who understand the challenges and opportunities that shape our mountain towns.
These Chamber of Commerce initiatives don’t just teach leadership — they forge it through immersive experiences, meaningful connections, and deep community engagement. Driven by a mission statement that promises “to inform, connect, and engage individuals by studying civic issues, building strong working relationships, and motivating
participants to provide enlightened, dynamic community leadership,” both leadership programs declare their commitment to “strengthening today’s citizens to become tomorrow’s leaders.”
Angela Owen, who directs both Leadership Highlands and Leadership Cashiers, brings over 25 years of business experience to these programs. As founder of TBL Leadership Partners and cofounder of Truventure Enterprises, Owen returned to her native Western North Carolina mountains to focus on leadership development after a successful career with Procter & Gamble. With her background in electrical engineering and her experience in manufacturing operations, business leadership, and organizational development, she is uniquely qualified to nurture community leaders.

“WE’RE
LOOKING FOR CANDIDATES WHO WANT TO UNDERSTAND AND CONNECT WITH THE COMMUNITY SO THEY CAN ENGAGE AT A DEEPER LEVEL,” OWEN EXPLAINS. “THESE PROGRAMS ARE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE CURIOUS ABOUT HOW OUR TOWNS WORK AND ARE EAGER TO BE PART OF COLLECTIVE SOLUTIONS THAT MOVE US FORWARD.”
The Leadership Cashiers and Highlands journey opens with an intensive retreat, followed by monthly sessions throughout the year. Each of the meticulously planned gatherings explores critical community elements: economic development, natural and cultural resources, planning and infrastructure, government, education, and health and well-being. Guest speakers include local experts and stakeholders — from representatives of the Tourism Development Authority to small business owners and real estate professionals — who provide a comprehensive view of how the community functions and where participants might find their place in the future.
addressing serious issues such as food insecurity and housing challenges,” she says. “It peeled back the curtain, revealing both the immense assets of our town and areas where we can make an even more significant impact.”
The results of these programs are visible throughout the Plateau. Graduates serve on nonprofit boards, volunteer with community organizations, and take on leadership roles in local government. As Owen notes, “It’s hard to be on anything in the Cashiers area or the Highlands area and not find someone who’s come through and been touched immediately by the programs.”
This network effect also creates a powerful catalyst for community improvement. “The cohort and the network are key elements,” Owen emphasizes. “Suddenly, you know people in your own class, you meet alumni, or you meet the people that come to present and speak.”
For Silver Creek Real Estate Group broker Chris Duffy, class of Leadership Highlands 2023, the participant-driven curriculum made all the difference. “I loved that each session’s agenda was driven by my fellow classmates,” he recalls. “Each session focused on an aspect of the community, but we determined who our speakers would be. It makes each class unique.”
As Owen explains, “It creates these connections, and from those connections, when there’s a need or an idea, people have this cohort to reach out to truly create a springboard rather than just an idea sitting there going nowhere.”
Rachel Wavra, a 2024 Leadership Highlands graduate and Silver Creek broker, experienced this awakening firsthand. “The program illuminated the incredible network of nonprofits and resources dedicated to
THESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE INITIATIVES DON’T JUST TEACH LEADERSHIP — THEY FORGE IT THROUGH IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES, MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS, AND DEEP COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.
For Owen, facilitating these connections is deeply personal. “I find great joy in helping find and discover the gold in people and in our community,” she explains. “It’s a labor of love, a labor of my heart. I’m really committed to this because I tremendously care about what happens here in these communities in Western North Carolina. It’s a beautiful, special place filled with beautiful, special people who care.”
That ethos of community care resonates with the program participants, including Bambi Famous Kaine, another Silver Creek broker and Leadership Cashiers graduate. While community service has always been important to her, the course, she says, “validated the significance of being a pillar in one’s community via philanthropy, volunteering, participating, and supporting local!” She continues, “I thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many business leaders who have impacted our community and are committed to ensuring their efforts are aligned with our vision.”
Through Leadership Highlands and Leadership Cashiers, our mountain towns continue building their most precious resource — a network of informed, connected, and engaged leaders who are dedicated to preserving what makes the Plateau extraordinary while embracing the possibilities of tomorrow.
IN THE
WATCHMAKING Jura Valley
TICK, TICK, TICK ... TIME: AN OMNIPRESENT PRESENCE
In the shadowed quiet of the Jura Mountains, beneath a blanket of snow, time breathes. The rhythmic ticking of a clock — a delicate, persistent sound — reaches beyond the confines of mere seconds. Its pulse is a profound reminder of the passage of moments and an eternal companion to humankind — reliable, unbroken, and steady — reminding us of the constant movement of life. It binds us to the past, anchors us in the present, and guides us forward into the future. It is here, in the Vallée de Joux, a place where time feels both eternal and ever-changing, that the art of horology finds its most sublime expression.
As the frigid winters hold the world in a hushed embrace, in this alpine sanctuary that is home to a lineage of artisans, the deep, meditative rhythm of creation is not driven by the ticking of a clock. Here, time is created, carefully sculpted by hands that have learned to dance with the eternal. Each watch, be it a rare Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, or Rolex born a manifestation of a centuries-old tradition, is a physical representation of human ingenuity, patience, and purpose — of master craftworkers who
pour themselves into their work, shaping timepieces that above all else show reverence for the craft. Each timepiece has an intimate relationship with the eternal — and our conversation through the ages.
THE ORIGINS OF CHRONOMETRY: A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME
The roots of Swiss watchmaking stretch back to the 18th century, when the need for precise timekeeping began to take on ever greater importance. Navigators, explorers, and traders — driven by the necessity of knowing time for travel and trade — sought instruments that could deliver reliable and accurate measurements. But it was in the secluded Vallée de Joux, far from the bustling cities and trade

routes, that an exceptional form of horology was born. The long, cold months provided the perfect environment for introspection and meticulous craftsmanship, and farmers and artisans — whose livelihoods were tied to the land — turned their focus toward the art of horology, using the quietude of winter to experiment with gears, springs, and escapements. Through trial and error, they mastered the delicate art of precision timekeeping, refining their skills to fashion timepieces with nothing more than tools, patience, and a deep understanding of the materials at hand — metal, wood, and glass — in workshops often tucked away on the upper floors of rural farmhouses. The “watch farms” where these pieces took shape were never meant to be grand but were instead a place of quiet labor, where each click and tick echoed through the stillness, ultimately

becoming the heartbeat of Swiss watchmaking — a space where mechanical marvels were crafted, giving shape to the passing of time itself.
Over the decades, the watchmaking tradition of the Vallée de Joux evolved, but it continues to be deeply rooted in the principles established by the artisans who first inhabited the region. Today, the workshop is still a place where patience, attention to detail, and an almost mystical dedication to the craft are the hallmarks of every timepiece created, with the Vallée de Joux remaining the birthplace of some of the finest watchmakers and most celebrated maisons in the world — Audemars Piguet, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Patek Philippe, and independent artisans. These brands trace their roots back to the Jura, where the earliest pioneers of watchmaking first sought to perfect the art of capturing time.
THE ART OF COMPLICATION: WHERE TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION
At the pinnacle of Swiss watchmaking lies the artistry of “complications”— functions that transcend the basic task of telling time. These are the watches that embody the very essence of horological mastery converging to create pieces that are as complex as they are beautiful. The complications crafted in the Vallée de Joux are expressions of human creativity and innovation, pushing the boundaries of what is possible while staying true to the traditions that have defined Swiss watchmaking for centuries.
Complications represent the culmination of years of knowledge, precision, and artisanship. A minute repeater, a perpetual calendar, a tourbillon — each of these complications is a testament to the mastery of the artisan and the vision that drives them forward. Jaeger-LeCoultre, for example, has long been at the forefront of creating these intricate mechanisms, with pieces such as the Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Cylindrique and the Reverso Tribute Gyrotourbillon 2 standing as examples of the brand’s technical prowess and artistic vision.
The Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Cylindrique is a masterpiece of horological design. The flying tourbillon, a complex and delicate mechanism, is paired with a cylindrical balance spring — an innovation that improves chronometric precision by reducing friction and offering greater stability, where a carefully composed arrangement of parts all work in harmony to create something greater than the sum of its components. The craftsmanship involved in creating such a timepiece is unparalleled, with every surface meticulously finished and each movement carefully calibrated to achieve perfection.
Similarly, the Reverso Tribute Gyrotourbillon 2 is a testament to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in watchmaking. The Gyrotourbillon — a spherical mechanism that rotates on multiple axes — enhances the watch’s accuracy and precision. The watch’s innovative design, combined with the brand’s signature attention to detail, creates a timepiece that is not only functional but also breathtakingly beautiful. The hand-finished movement, the skeletonized dial, and the sun guilloché pattern on the case all contribute to a watch that is as much a work of art as it is a precision instrument. These watches are more than mechanical marvels — they are crafted to evoke awe and admiration with every glance.
THE RAREST WATCHES EVER MADE
The world of haute horlogerie is home to some of the most exceptional and intricate timepieces ever created. These rare watches stand as testaments to the extraordinary artisanship and innovation that define their legacy, blending centuries of tradition with groundbreaking technological advancements. What makes these timepieces so remarkable is not their exclusivity or the price they fetch at auction — it is the painstaking process, the unique complications, and the artistry that goes into creating each one.
ROLEX 4113
The Rolex 4113 split-seconds chronograph is a watch that embodies the pinnacle of Rolex’s horological mastery. Only 12 were ever made, and its rarity alone makes it a coveted collector’s piece. What sets it apart is its split-second chronograph, a complication that allows for the precise recording of multiple events happening in quick succession with the push of a button on the crown. This makes the Rolex 4113 an incredibly complex and valuable watch, as its design and functionality are deeply intertwined with
mechanical precision that only a handful of Rolex’s finest artisans could achieve. In 2011, one of these watches sold for a staggering $1.17 million, solidifying its place as one of the most coveted vintage chronographs in the world.
PATEK PHILIPPE 3974
Patek Philippe Ref. 3974 is a quintessential collector’s piece, renowned for its complexity and historical significance. This platinum automatic perpetual calendar features a moon phase display and a leap year indicator, and it is one of the few watches to have integrated these complications with such seamless elegance. The 3974 was revolutionary for its time, showcasing Patek Philippe’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of mechanical watchmaking. Produced in 1989, this timepiece was ahead of its era, particularly with its leap year indicator at 3 o’clock — an incredible feat of engineering. As one of the most complicated watches to exist, the 3974 is a vintage treasure, reflecting Patek Philippe’s longstanding tradition of horological perfection.

PATEK PHILIPPE 1518 IN STEEL
The Patek Philippe Ref. 1518 in steel is the holy grail of watch collectors. Produced in 1941, this timepiece was the world’s first perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch ever manufactured. Out of only four known examples, this particular model became the most expensive watch ever sold at auction when it fetched 11 million Swiss francs. The combination of the perpetual calendar with a chronograph complication in a wristwatch was unprecedented at the time and is a testament to Patek Philippe’s technical expertise and pioneering spirit. The rarity and historical significance of the Ref. 1518 in steel only adds to its legendary status in the world of haute horlogerie.
ROLEX 6062 “BAO DAI”
The Bao Dai Rolex Ref. 6062 is a timepiece rich in both history and rarity. This yellow gold automatic triple calendar wristwatch was once owned by Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam, and it became the most expensive Rolex ever sold at auction, reaching £4.1 million in 2017. What makes the Bao Dai Rolex so exceptional is its backstory, in which the emperor specifically commissioned the watch to be the rarest and most precious model ever made. The watch features a triple calendar with a moon phase display, and its unique provenance has made it one of the most sought-after Rolexes in existence.
VACHERON CONSTANTIN 4907 “CHRONOMÈTRE ROYAL”
Vacheron Constantin’s Chronomètre Royal Ref. 4907 is a vintage masterpiece that stands as one of the rarest and most exceptional watches ever made. Only one known example has ever been seen at auction, making its provenance shrouded in mystery. The Chronomètre Royal is revered not just for its rarity but also for the quality of its movement and case construction. Its precision and artisanship epitomize the essence of Vacheron Constantin’s heritage. When it was auctioned for £101,824, it highlighted how elusive these pieces can be, with the possibility that others of its kind may exist in private collections adding to the allure of this timepiece.
MASTER ARTISAN PROFILE
RAÚL PAGÈS
Today, the artisans shaping the future of Swiss watchmaking include independent watchmaker Raúl Pagès, who embodies the spirit of the Jura in his creations. His journey began not in a traditional watchmaking workshop but as a creative soul, experimenting with jewelry and graphic arts before discovering horology. It was in a two-week trial at a watchmaking school that he felt time’s pull, the deep connection between art and mechanics. “It felt like something clicked inside of me,” Raúl reflects, his voice carrying the weight of that moment. “It was not simply about making things — it was about creating something with a soul.”
Raúl’s work is a blend of the old and the new, where centuries of tradition are fused with modern ingenuity. His Régulateur à détente RP1 is a prime example of this balance. The detent escapement, a mechanism once reserved for marine chronometers, is reimagined for the wrist with a solution that preserves the precision of the original design while addressing the unique challenges of wearability. Raúl’s innovation is not just technical but also a deeply philosophical approach to time, where every movement is a work of art. He often speaks of his pieces as “living sculptures,” where the soul of the watch is found in every angle, finish, and movement. His Soberly Onyx watch, for instance, is a tribute to the art of restraint, where the minimalism of the design is infused with meticulous care. Each surface, or bevel, is hand-finished to perfection, elevating

that stands as a testament to Raúl’s commitment to bringing art to life. The tortoise, whose limbs, head, and tail move with graceful precision, “I wanted to create something that as much as it is a watch is also an experience,” he explains. “The idea is to evoke emotion, to remind people that time is not just something we measure — it’s something we feel.”
Creating a single timepiece can take him many months, sometimes even years, as each component — from the tiniest spring to the largest bridge — is crafted by hand. His commitment to traditional methods — eschewing computer numerical control machines and relying on the purity of handcraft — is about preserving the legacy of Swiss watchmaking, ensuring that each piece retains a piece of his soul. “When you create something by hand, you leave a part of yourself in it,” he says, his voice quiet but resolute. “That’s what makes a timepiece truly special.”
In a world where timepieces are often reduced to mere commodities, Raúl’s watches stand apart. His creations are priced in the genre of exclusivity — each one a rare jewel and a collector’s item, priced at 80,000 CHF or more. They are an invitation into a world where time is not just measured but celebrated, ticking softly in the hands of those who understand the value of artisanship, the depth of tradition, and the eternity of time.
THE FUTURE OF SWISS WATCHMAKING: LEGACY AND HERITAGE
As the world moves forward, it is easy to forget that Swiss watchmaking is as much about embracing the future as it is about preserving the past. Today, guardians of heritage such as the Musée International d’Horlogerie (MIH) stand as beacons to ensure
that the delicate threads of time’s legacy are never severed. The MIH serves as a living testament to the artisanship that has defined Swiss watchmaking for centuries — a bridge between the past, present, and future, ensuring that the soul of horology remains intact even as new technologies and innovations emerge. Through its exhibitions, research, and educational initiatives, the MIH helps to shape the future of Swiss watchmaking, ensuring that the next generation of artisans are equipped with the skills and knowledge to carry the tradition forward.
It is clear that Swiss watchmaking will continue to evolve. But no matter how the industry changes, the soul of horology will remain the same: driven by a passion for precision, artistry, and artisanship. As the director of the MIH Nathalie Marielloni so eloquently puts it, “The future of Swiss watchmaking is already unfolding. It will be made by hands that remember, minds that dare, and hearts that create.” And as long as there are artisans like Raúl Pagès, pushing the boundaries of what is possible while staying true to the legacy of their craft, the future of Swiss watchmaking will be in good hands.
The ticking of the clock will continue to guide us forward as it always has — led by skillful hands as it has been through the ages in the silence of the Jura Valley.

SIMS VALLEY
At the turn of the 20th century, Willis and Laura Sims settled in a high valley with clear 40-mile vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains in the west. They built a rustic mountain home, lived off the land, and raised their six children here. Today, the valley is home to Sims Valley — a unique mountain community built in the same spirit as the Sims family homestead. It is a place of beauty, a place for families, and a place where residents live in harmony with the nature that surrounds them.
Located between the historic towns of Cullowhee and Cashiers, Sims Valley provides its homeowners with the feeling of living within a national park, rather than a resort community. Intersected by winding nature trails, designed by Trail Dynamics (who often designs for the National Park Service), Sims Valley offers many opportunities to let their residents’ spirits soar with the natural splendor that is housed within this oneof-a-kind property. The peaceful sound of cascading waterfalls, the exotic fragrance of mountain laurel and native wildflowers, and the awe-inspiring sight of the Smokies blend together for an exceptional outdoor experience. Go shopping or dining in Cashiers or Highlands, explore Nantahala National Forest, take a boat ride on Lake Glenville, or enjoy the many amenities that Sims Valley has to offer.
The Sims family homestead still stands and now serves as a community gathering place. In fact, there is no shortage of places for the community to gather together at Sims Valley. The Mountain Clubhouse contains a fitness center and spa, swimming pool, large great room with fireplace, caterer’s kitchen, outdoor grill, and two outdoor fireplaces, paired with some of the most amazing views available at the property. The Mountain Chapel — located at the north end of the property — offers an open-air gathering place for Sims Valley residents to enjoy a picnic, a roaring fire in the outdoor fireplace, or a breathtaking vista of the valley and the mountains beyond.

THE NEW ERA OF FINE SPIRITS
word S by alexander hawthorne photography by nc living magazine
For generations, whiskey was the pinnacle of refined drinking — the drink of collectors, fireside conversations, and well-stocked home bars. But across the U.S., agave spirits are quietly taking over.
At a private tasting in Cashiers, whiskey collectors found themselves setting down their Glencairn glasses in favor of copitas filled with aged tequila and mezcal. These weren’t the tequilas of salt-rimmed college shots — they were small-batch, estate-grown, and carefully distilled.
“Great tequila is as complex and layered as any whiskey,” explains David Suro, owner of Siembra Azul Tequila. “It is a reflection of the land, the season, and the hand of the maker — qualities that sophisticated drinkers deeply appreciate.” Unlike many massmarket whiskeys that rely on artificial enhancements, tequila and mezcal remain rooted in authenticity and purity.
Mezcal, in particular, has captured the imagination of fine drinkers. Unlike tequila, which is always made from blue Weber agave, mezcal can be made from dozens of wild, slow-growing agave species, each carrying its own terroir-driven flavor. A single batch may take more than a decade to produce, as farmers nurture the plants, then roast them in earthen pits, fermenting the spirit naturally. “In a world where everything is mass-produced,” says Iván Saldaña, cofounder of Montelobos Mezcal, “mezcal represents a return to slow, intentional craftsmanship. Each bottle tells a different story.”
For those who once favored rare Scotch or a perfectly aged bourbon, the best tequila and mezcal offer a new kind of distinction — one that isn’t just about age but also about artistry. And in homes across the Plateau, tequila is no longer just a warm-weather spirit — it has become a year-round indulgence, pairing just as well with a crisp mountain sunset as it does with an autumn fire.
Craftsmanship has always been central to the finest spirits, but rarely has it been associated with convenience. That is now changing.
The rise of ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails has transformed what it means to enjoy a wellmade drink.
“TODAY’S CONSUMERS EXPECT EXCELLENCE, EVEN IN CONVENIENCE,” SAYS DAVID GLUCKMAN, A VETERAN IN THE SPIRITS INDUSTRY. “THE NEW WAVE OF RTDS IS BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN CRAFT AND ACCESSIBILITY — DELIVERING AN ELEVATED EXPERIENCE WITHOUT COMPROMISE.”
At a recent gathering at a private club, guests were served pre-bottled cocktails crafted with barrel-aged tequila, house-made syrups, and hand-selected botanicals — a level of quality once reserved for bespoke mixology. Gone are the days when premade meant low quality. Today’s high-end RTDs use artisanal spirits, precise blending techniques, and careful maturation, proving that excellence is not about effort — it is about experience.
TWO COCKTAILS THAT DEFINE THE NEW ERA OF SPIRITS
THE VERDE NEGRONI low-ABV, herbaceous
A fresh, botanical twist on the Negroni, featuring tequila, green Chartreuse, and white vermouth.
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 oz tequila blanco (additive-free)
• ¾ oz white vermouth
• ¾ oz green Chartreuse
• Dash of celery bitters
GARNISH:
• Cucumber ribbon
• Basil
Instructions: Stir all ingredients with ice and strain into a rocks glass over a large cube. Garnish with cucumber and basil.
THE SMOKED HONEY PALOMA terroir-driven, balanced
A mezcal-forward version of the Paloma, with smoked honey for depth.
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 ½ oz Mezcal (Espadín or Tepeztate)
• ½ oz Lime juice, ½ ounce grapefruit juice
• ½ oz Smoked honey syrup
• 2 oz Sparkling mineral water
GARNISH:
• Smoked sea salt
• Grapefruit wedge
Instructions: Rim a highball glass with smoked salt and fill with ice. Shake the mezcal, juices, and honey syrup; strain. Top with sparkling water and garnish with the grapefruit wedge.
On the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau — where life is measured in golden hours, crisp mountain air, and moments well spent — the world of spirits is evolving. Mark Dempsey, Senior Consulting Director at GlobalData, sums it up: “Consumers are saying, ‘I’m going to do it a little less, but I’m going to spend a bit more and have a great experience.’”
TRUE CONNOISSEURSHIP IS NO LONGER ABOUT EXCESS — IT IS ABOUT INTENT, CRAFTSMANSHIP, AND CONNECTION. AND THOSE WHO RECOGNIZE THIS SHIFT ARE NOT JUST DRINKING DIFFERENTLY; THEY ARE DRINKING BETTER.
HIGHLANDS FALLS COUNTRY CLUB
Perched atop the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau at over 4,000 feet in elevation, Highlands Falls Country Club is a place where the refined rhythm of mountain life plays out with both elegance and ease. Here, along the winding contours of the Nantahala National Forest, mornings begin with birdsong and mist rising off the fairways, and afternoons unfold over a round of golf, a glass of wine, and conversations shared with neighbors who feel more like lifelong friends.
For those who seek more than just a summer retreat — and instead, long for a lifestyle rooted in beauty, tradition, and community — Highlands Falls offers an extraordinary sanctuary.
A GOLF COURSE THAT LEAVES AN IMPRESSION
Designed originally by Joe Lee and thoughtfully refined in recent years by architect Bill Bergin, the 18-hole championship course at Highlands Falls isn’t just playable — it’s memorable. Carved into the contours of the mountain, the course winds through rhododendron-lined fairways and alongside babbling brooks. Elevation changes are part of the charm, with each hole offering its own dramatic perspective of the surrounding ridgelines.
Then there’s the iconic 15th hole: a par-3 so visually stunning—with a cascading 100-foot waterfall as its backdrop — it feels more like a landscape painting than a golf shot. It’s no wonder this hole has earned accolades as one of the most photographed in the Southeast. But beyond its beauty, the course offers strategic intrigue, fast bentgrass greens, and just the right balance of challenge and enjoyment.
A CLUB THAT FOSTERS TRUE CONNECTION
What distinguishes Highlands Falls isn’t just the spectacular setting or the impeccably maintained course — it’s the community. With fewer than 350 350memberships, the club remains intentionally intimate, encouraging genuine connection over superficial formality. Members gather for tennis and croquet matches, fitness classes with panoramic views, or quiet afternoons at the pool. Evenings are marked by wine dinners on the terrace, live music under the stars, and the kind of storytelling that comes only from shared experience.
Whether you’re playing a spirited round of pickleball, participating in a seasonal croquet tournament, or simply enjoying a mountain breeze from the clubhouse deck or amenity pavilions, there’s a sense of belonging here that’s difficult to find — and impossible to replicate.
DINING, REDEFINED
At Highlands Falls, cuisine is more than a necessity — it’s a celebration. The clubhouse, recently updated in a multimillion-dollar renovation, features both formal and casual dining spaces, each designed to frame the surrounding mountains in their best light. The culinary team
curates menus that lean into seasonal, locally inspired ingredients — think North Carolina trout, heirloom tomatoes, and perfectly seared filets.
On any given evening, you might find members sipping cocktails on the veranda as the sun dips behind the ridge, or enjoying an expertly paired wine dinner in the main dining room. Private events are equally well appointed, with the capacity and elegance to host weddings, celebrations, and curated club events throughout the season.
REAL ESTATE ROOTED IN REVERENCE FOR PLACE
The club’s surrounding real estate echoes its philosophy: discreet, refined, and in harmony with the land. Homes here range from cozy mountain cottages to architecturally significant estates, many with sweeping views, creek frontage, or walking access to the course. Whether perched on a rocky outcropping or tucked beneath a canopy of hardwoods, each property feels thoughtfully integrated into its natural surroundings.
Owning here is not just about square footage — it’s about investing in a way of life. And while Highlands Falls remains a private, memberowned club, the welcome is warm for those who value tradition, stewardship, and authentic mountain hospitality.
A LEGACY OF QUIET LUXURY
In a world that often equates luxury with excess, Highlands Falls Country Club offers something rarer: a life well lived, on your own terms, surrounded by natural beauty and kindred spirits. It is, in every way, a retreat in the truest sense — a place to exhale, recharge, and return to season after season.
For those who value substance over spectacle and connection over crowd, Highlands Falls is more than a destination — it’s a legacy waiting to be written.

THE RISE OF LUXURY RANCH RESORTS
ON THE A Range Range
words by ellen jones
THERE’S SOMETHING INTOXICATING ABOUT THE IDEA OF RIDING OFF INTO THE SUNSET — ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR TRUSTY STEED IS A PUREBRED HORSE, AND YOUR LODGINGS ARE MORE FIVE-STAR THAN FRONTIER. ALIGNING RUSTIC CHARM WITH REFINED ELEGANCE, LUXURY RANCH RESORTS ARE EMERGING AS THE QUINTESSENTIAL RETREAT FOR THOSE YEARNING TO RECONNECT WITH NATURE WITHOUT SACRIFICING A THREAD COUNT.
If “Yellowstone” and “1923” have taught us one thing, it’s that the sweeping vistas and rugged magnetism of the West never go out of style. And if the stats are anything to go by, we’ve fallen hard for the “cowboy core” trend. According to travel experience marketplace Tripaneer, interest in U.S. ranch stays was up 94% in 2024, while Skyscanner bookings for holidays that offered horseback riding shot up by 18%.
When you hear the call of the wild, a Western vacation could just be the perfect escape. But don’t let the yeehaw aesthetic fool you — these high-end homesteads offer more than just a taste of the Wild West. Today’s luxury ranch resorts cater to those seeking adventure, solitude, and a touch of oldworld glamour. Think plush accommodations, fine dining, and spa treatments — all set against the breathtaking backdrops of America’s glorious wilderness.

CIBOLO CREEK RANCH
TEXAS
BEST FOR: RELIVING THE FRONTIER ERA IN LUXURY
Sitting pretty in the Chinati Mountains foothills is Cibolo Creek Ranch, a secluded oasis with a storied past. Once a private fort, the historic ranch (one of Texas’ oldest) offers a taste of the Old West with all the trappings of contemporary comforts. Inside the adobe hacienda, Cibolo is stuffed with antiques and art of yore. It’s like stepping back into a sepia-toned postcard.
Rustic yet minimal, rooms and suites are situated poolside, lakeside, or on the courtyard, which has an acequia (spring-fed stream) running through its center. For a communal experience, stay with a group of friends or family in your own personal fort. Each of these self-contained residences offers privacy and authenticity, blending frontier charm (wood-burning fireplaces) with modern touches (robes and coffee machines).

undulating mountains. Feeling adventurous? Jump into an open-air Humvee and head up the mountains to Carrizal Springs or try your hand at on-ranch clay pigeon shooting. Cibolo Creek really is all about writing your own Western story.
Dining at Cibolo Creek is a relaxed affair. Its Mexican-inspired dishes are served with a side of Southwestern hospitality and bold flavors.

BEST FOR: WELLNESS IN THE
WILD WEST
Canyon Ranch’s four award-winning resorts are all about well-being rather than roughing it. Located in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, this Tucson outpost invites you to design your stay based on your personal wellness goals. With over 100 spa, beauty, and medical aesthetics services to choose from as well as a daily schedule of 35-plus classes, lectures, and activities, you can tailor every moment to nourish your body, mind, and spirit.
The resort itself is stunning (in no small part because it’s been honored as a Three Key Hotel by the Michelin Guide). Purpose-built in an adobe style, its buildings are all interconnected by beautifully kept gardens and pools. Appointed in landscape-harmonious shades of sand, stone, and earth, interiors are contemporary but with rustic flourishes.
When you’re ready to tear yourself away from your sunrise yoga or aerial Pilates session, you can escape into the wilderness by hiking in Pima Canyon or biking up Sabino Canyon. Or, for something a little more spiritual, why not perform a sacral chakra hip opening?
If you’re looking for a hearty cheeseburger after a long day, Canyon Ranch may not be for you. Its menu is purely whole-food-based, produced with organic, locally sourced ingredients. That’s not to say fun can’t be had — Javelina Cantina bar is well-stocked with tequila and local beer.

However, aside from the original barn and homestead, which have been lovingly renovated, The Ranch at Rock Creek is newly built, with much reverence for tradition and heritage. No wonder it’s the first Guest Ranch in the world to receive a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating. The Ranch at Rock Creek’s log cabins and lodges are decked out in a luxe Western style. Accommodating two to 12, they’re perfect for a romantic escape or family getaway, and the all-inclusive packages make it easy to indulge.
