In the world of design, it’s frequently out with the old and in with the new. Trends, after all, cycle in and out of fashion, following changes in how we live and regard our environments. In recent decades, the mantra “less is more” has dominated the scene, with a sleek, at times even sparse, approach to décor driving a pared-down and less emotional mode of living. But all of that is changing, as worldrenowned interior designer Timothy Corrigan predicts. What is old is now new again, and more is more. “I believe that Maximalism is a direct reaction to the Minimalism we’ve had for 20 years, and some of the direction we see with that includes boldly mixing patterns, rounded furniture, and a mix of warm and cold metals,” he says. “As with all trends, this will eventually reach a more moderate and balanced midpoint, but for the most part, a more complex, layered look will be in fashion for the foreseeable future.”

NC L I VI NG W I NT E R 2024 11

It’s an approach that is perhaps unsurprising, given Corrigan’s professional background. Growing up in Southern California, he was primarily exposed to a singular local style which he describes as “comfort, casual living, and open selfexpression.” Moving to Paris in the late 1980s at first provoked culture shock but then gave rise to a broadening of his own taste and experience. “I didn’t like gilded furniture and thought that it seemed flashy. But as I started visiting museums and reading about the history of French design, I began to develop an understanding and appreciation for it. This is true of any design style. The more you are exposed, the more your tastes evolve.” “WE ARE ALL SO DIRECTLY INFLUENCED BY THE THINGS THAT WE ARE EXPOSED TO. IF WE ONLY SEE OR KNOW ONE THING, THEN WE CANNOT UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO US.” It was that expansion of his viewpoint that originally led Corrigan into the field of interior design. While working in the advertising field in France, he purchased and renovated a 17th-century manor house in Normandy. Finding the experience rewarding, he then eyed his Paris apartment as the canvas for his next project. Before long, Corrigan’s homes were featured in design magazines, and clients appeared, asking for help designing their homes. He recalls, “I started to realize that I enjoyed my secondary job more than my primary ‘day’ job.” Blending breezy California vibes with classic French opulence might sound, on the surface, like an impossible clashing of two distinct and separate cultural and design schemas. And yet, Corrigan creates rooms that are effortlessly layered, mixing plush comfort, impeccable quality, and intricate details. More is more, but it’s never too much. Perhaps that is due to Corrigan’s process, which begins by investigating the function of a room before creating its final form. “The creative spark usually starts with the

12 SI LVE R CR E E K R EA L ESTATE GRO UP

client and their desires for their home. No matter the size or style of the project, I always focus first on how my clients want to live. Based on that, we work on getting the basic furniture plan right. Then I add in the comfort and décor. You must start with the right plan before you even begin to think about the decorative design elements. What good is it to have a beautiful room that you never use or doesn’t work for you?” It’s no wonder Corrigan has made a name for himself as one of the preeminent interior designers globally, named to the Architectural Digest list of Top 100 Architects and Designers in the World. While décor is always a matter of personal taste, we all must live, and hopefully do so contentedly, in the homes we inhabit. Considering design from a usability perspective from the outset helps him feel as comfortable revamping a centuries-old French château as he does Madonna’s Beverly Hills mansion. The cultivation of a distinct style, rooted in both comfort and elegant allure, is what allows Corrigan to transition seamlessly from one setting

to another. Currently working in thirteen states and six countries, his team — which he deliberately maintains on the smaller side for more intimate collaboration — tackles projects as diverse as historic mansions in Charleston and Houston, an exclusive apartment in New York’s Billionaires Row, a 48,000-square-foot French château, a Parisian townhouse, an estate home in Montecito, California, and even one of the largest yachts in the world. Corrigan is personally involved in every assignment but says, “I particularly enjoy working on older homes and finding ways to appropriately update them for the needs of today while still maintaining their original architectural integrity.” Blending his childhood roots with a broadened perspective helps Corrigan create interiors that are equally liveable and globally informed. “California is all about comfort, casual living, and open self-expression, and I try to bring those elements to all of our design projects, whether they are in New York City, London, Paris, Asia, or the Middle East.” No matter how ornate the furnishings or luxe the materials, the end result is

always imbued with a sense of personal familiarity and practical liveability. What would a man, so well-traveled and versed in different architectural styles, think of a remote Appalachian mountain town? As it turns out, Corrigan can answer that question, having previously visited the Highlands-Cashiers area. Of his visits, he says, “I fell deeply in love with the terrain and the people. It is such a special place, and I completely understand why it is such a sought-after destination.”

And so, it begs the question: If tasked with designing an idyllic mountain retreat in the Highlands-Cashiers region, what architectural and interior design styles would Corrigan envision? Corrigan begins his answer by referring to the area’s stunning natural scenery. “In any project, I let the natural landscape inform the architecture, color palette, and overall design of a home. Large windows to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the region would be a top priority. The changing colors of the seasons would inform the color palette and types of fabric used throughout the home. Since this would be a place for relaxation, renewal, and time spent with family and friends, comfortable upholstered furniture and performance fabrics would be used. I would probably stay away from anything too expected or “kitschy” and instead mix styles, periods, and textures so it can feel fresh and alive, both today and for years to come.” THOUGH INHABITING A SMALL CORNER OF THE WORLD, HIGHLANDS AND CASHIERS UNDOUBTEDLY FEEL THE IMPACT OF GLOBAL TRENDS. HAVING ALREADY PREDICTED THE RISE OF MAXIMALISM IN RECENT YEARS, CORRIGAN SERVES AS A WEALTH OF INFORMATION ON WHAT ’S IN STORE FOR INTERIORS. HIS PRESENCE EACH YEAR AT MAISON&OBJET IN PARIS, WHICH HE DESCRIBES AS “A HARBINGER OF WHAT ’S TO COME FOR THE AMERICAN MARKET,” LENDS THE DESIGNER STRONG PREDICTIVE ABILITIES. HE REPORTS, “ THE MOST OBVIOUS DESIGN TREND RIGHT NOW IS THE ABSOLUTE DEATH OF ANGULAR MID-CENTURY-LOOKING PIECES. THE TREND OF CIRCULAR, CURVED, AND ROUND FURNITURE REMAINS STRONG.” Indeed, antiques have become new and desirable again. “Investing in good quality furniture and antiques in classic shapes can anchor a space and prevent it from becoming dated and out-ofstyle,” Corrigan advises. “I urge people to strive to make their home look and feel like it has been achieved over time and truly reflects their interests and personality.” That focus on the interests and personality of the homeowner is central to all of Corrigan’s work. “Most of our clients insist on furnishings that they won’t see anywhere else. So around 80% of the things on our projects are custom. In this age

when you can find almost any brand anywhere in the world, bespoke or one-of-a-kind objects become even more important. We have clients for whom we have even designed fabric, rugs, and wallcoverings that were unique to them because of their desire for exclusivity.” Mirroring the shift away from hard lines in furniture, architecture seems poised to follow suit. Corrigan predicts that floor plans of both residential and commercial spaces will experience a resurgence of curved walls and even circular spaces as the collective consciousness seeks to be enveloped in a snug sense of privacy. “There is a trend away from large open spaces toward more defined spaces… There is definitely a return to the dining room, even if it is with just a moving partition that can be opened and closed between the kitchen and the dining area.” The rise of Maximalism ushered in softer lines and evoked a feeling of sensual comfort, but the movement has had an equally transformative impact on color. Gone are the days of gray and beige everything, with bolder and more adventurous shades taking the stage. Tans and creams have become the popular neutrals, and brighter hues, no longer relegated to background accents, are used enthusiastically throughout the space. It’s a trend that Corrigan does anticipate will become more tempered, however, as it continues to mature. “Strong colors are big right now,” he says. “But they will shift to more nuanced shades of blues and greens, pinks and taupes… Colors are becoming more complex and sophisticated.” Corrigan describes trends in the sense of being “on a pendulum going from one side to another.” Certainly, that is the case in both interior design and fashion, as we witness colors, shapes, patterns, and even attitudes swinging from one extreme to another over the decades and often finding more moderated resting points in between. But what of innovations that forever change the ways in which we live, work, and even view the world around us? Artificial Intelligence represents one such monumental shift and has provoked trepidation that human beings, in all their occasionally flawed but uniquely creative glory, could soon be replaced by machines. In every field, from industrial factories to medicine to publishing and art, new AI-based technology challenges

NC LI VI NG W I NT E R 2024 15

industrious mortals to reinvent their roles and redefine their contributions. Corrigan, for the most part, views AI as an assistive tool rather than a replacement for human ingenuity — one we should work with rather than against. “As consumers become more comfortable purchasing furniture online and using “virtual” or AI design tools, the added benefit of seeing the scale of an item in situ will be invaluable. Scale is an area where most do-it-yourself consumers run into problems; an item may look good online or in a catalog but may not work well in the actual space… For designers to stay relevant, we need to bring a level of customization that cannot simply be purchased from an online website… Design professionals will need to move beyond the mindset that they can only make money by selling things. Their expertise is the real value that they provide.” From momentary fads to innovative revolutions, the world of design — so reflective of our own perspectives and attitudes over time — never remains static. How, then, do we create interiors that both reflect the here and now while providing lasting value and a soothing sense of constancy at home? Impossible to ignore, trends lend a sense of valuable relevancy to a space. At the same time, Corrigan recommends against relying heavily upon them. “Nothing dates faster than something trendy,” he advises. “The late fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld is aptly quoted as saying, ‘Trendy is the last stage before Tacky!’ Don’t get too fixated on finding the perfect item to match what you already have at home. Better to buy what you love, and you’ll end up with a much more interesting look that truly reflects your personality and taste.” As Maximalism matures into an overarching trend that will inform design over the next decade or more, it will also grow more moderate in its expression. Concurrently, the returning focus on antiques and custom items reflects an intense interest in uniqueness along with personal, emotional statements in style. When asked how to create longevity in the result, Corrigan reflects on his love of mid-18th-century French architecture and design while reminding of the true purpose of a room: “I have always tried to create a mix of the best of the past with pieces from today with a constant focus on how to make a room practical and truly livable. The most beautiful room is not really successful if you can’t comfortably live in it.”

A HISTORIC DISH WITH MODERN INSPIRATION

COMMITMENT TO THE FINEST INGREDIENTS

Often emblematic of a culture, food develops its personality as the forces of history gradually shape a society and its people. Everything from politics to transportation to technology influences the development of new dishes, and there is perhaps no better example of this evolution than pizza. What we consider a classic Italian staple originated in Naples and for centuries existed as merely a plain flatbread enjoyed by the common people.

Thoughtfully crafted dishes require the finest ingredients. To ensure the highest quality for his pizzas, salads, soups, and sandwiches, Chef John researches and pursues each topping with deliberation. Flour from Italy — softer and slightly sweeter than its American counterparts — ensures an authentic-tasting crust that perfectly blisters when baked at high temperatures. Importing the country’s San Marzano tomatoes allows the staff to whip up fresh marinara with a touch of steamed basil, in keeping with traditional recipes. Artisanal meats are hand sliced in-house to preserve the freshest flavors. And, of course, who could forget the cheese? After much deliberation, Chef John settled on Grande Mozzarella due to its ability to maintain texture in the 1000-degree Forno wood-fired ovens.

During the heyday of exploration in the 1600s, European merchants began to import tomatoes from Peru. Believing the strange exotic fruit to be poisonous, many reluctant Italians initially refused to try them. However, tomatoes eventually won acceptance by the public, and bakers began experimenting and spreading tomato sauce on their flatbreads. By the 1700s, a new food sensation was born. Back then, a Neapolitan pizza consisted simply of crust lavished with simple red sauce. When King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited Naples in the 1880s, a local baker decided to impress the royal visitors with a unique twist on the town’s signature snack. He added cheese and basil to create a red, white, and green dish symbolic of the country’s flag, and the result was a culinary sensation fit for a king — or queen! Today’s Margherita pizza still bears Her Highness’s name. Pizza continued to develop its identity into the 1900s and beyond, particularly after large numbers of Italian immigrants began to settle in the United States. Today, modern gourmands delight in experimental flavor combinations, with fluctuating trends persistently taking the foodie world by storm. Here in Highlands, Four65's Chef John Johnson sticks with the traditional Neapolitan formula as the basis for his pizzas while continuing to adapt new recipes suitable for the sophisticated palate. Each pizza on the Four65 menu is carefully crafted with the discerning guest in mind, with several options notably created for those who crave something new and a bit different. Standouts include the innovative Brussels and Bacon Pizza, the more classic Prosciutto Pizza with just a touch of hot pecan honey, and the unexpected combination of Fig and Artichoke Pizza which creates a careful balance of savory flavors with a slight sweetness.

Equal care is devoted to the menu’s salads, soups, and sandwiches. With many greens, vegetables, and herbs sourced from the nearby farm at GlenCove by Old Edwards, diners are assured of fresh, local ingredients. Menus are updated regularly to reflect seasonal availability, with

HOUSE-CRAFTED COCKTAIL S AND BEER

As any dedicated foodie knows, the art of food doesn’t end on the plate. Each dish deserves the accompaniment of a suitable glass of wine or beer or a cocktail. Fortunately, the bartenders at Four65 dedicate themselves to perfecting all three via an impressive wine list, craft beer selection, and house-made cocktails. Each detail of the drink menu is meticulously curated and communicated to guests, from the origins of local brews, which are rotated seasonally, to the restaurant’s own syrups and ginger beer (used in Moscow mules and other drink recipes). Particularly comforting on a cold day, the Woodford Carmel Apple Manhattan or Pumpkin Spice White Russian hit just the right notes. Or, to complement your meal with a tangy beverage and a spicy kick, don’t forget the Four65 Bloody Mary, featuring Sister’s Sauce from Starrsville, Georgia. And for those who prefer to abstain, the bar supplies festive mocktails with the same high level of craftsmanship, such as the Blackberry Mule, which recalls fresh, Appalachian summer flavor. A GRANDE FINALE

options such as the burrata salad shifting from a mix of warm-season veggies in the summer to roasted squash and beets with a pumpkin seed pesto in the fall. Adjusting dishes in this way allows for consistently fresh ingredients sourced closer to Highlands and provides regular guests with a dynamic experience each time they visit. And for a truly decadent start to a meal, treat yourself to the charcuterie. The artfully chosen meats, cheeses, and accoutrements are designed to impress, with Sweet Grass Dairy of Thomasville, Georgia, and Spotted Trotter of Atlanta providing their finest selections.

Not to be outdone by exceptional main course offerings and impressive drink selections, the Dolci menu offers its own array of delectable options. With their decidedly Italian essence, the Tiramisu and Four65 Affogato tempts diners to save room for dessert. Or, in keeping with the local setting, the Mountain Apple Crisp in its own piping hot skillet begs to be shared by the table. Come to enjoy lunch or dinner, but plan to stay for dessert because nothing is an afterthought here. Whether you’re here for a day or here to stay, Four65 Woodfire Bistro + Bar offers the epitome of cozy Blue Ridge Mountain ambiance paired with a menu to please any appetite. Classic favorite pizzas draw those in search of familiar favorites, while just enough inventive twists on the timehonored dish keep palates entertained. With its dedicated team providing attentive service and satisfying artisanal cuisine, the Highlands hotspot gives more than enough reason to return again and again. EVEN THROUGH ITS FREEZING WINTERS, S C A N D I N AV I A O F F E R S A WA R M W E L C O M E AND THRILLING ICY AC T I V I T I E S Ever since the World Happiness Report was launched in 2012, Finland has claimed the top spot six times, and the neighboring Scandinavian countries of Sweden and Norway have trailed closely behind, in spots six and seven for 2023, respectively. Happiness is contagious, and Scandis impress this contentment upon millions of travelers annually. “They want to show their guests what they experience every day,” says Elaine Nelson Peik, general manager and destination specialist for 50 Degrees North, a Nordic tour company. Crucial to the region’s high happiness rankings, according to the latest World Happiness study, are a healthy life expectancy, social support and generosity, all of which are very much aligned with residents’ lifestyles. Embodiments of their outlook are the principles hygge and koselig. Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah), a Danish word, has been popularized globally. The idea is that to feel happy, people must surround themselves with the things that make them feel so — especially important during those blustery Scandinavian winters. Key principles of hygge include being present, experiencing pleasure, expressing gratitude, coming together and creating general coziness and comfort within one’s space.

Koselig (koosh-lee), the Norwegian equivalent, similarly strives for contentment and further reinforces establishing warmth from within. Nature, Ms. Peik notes, is essential in discovering this internal balance. Scandinavian countries have no shortage of natural spaces to explore, much of it unspoiled, and have adapted to venture there even when temperatures get frigid. “They understand and respect and know that that’s a really important part of your overall health

and happiness,” she says. “People who are more connected with nature are generally happier. And northern Scandinavia is really magical with its puffy snow and trees.” Following are must-see Scandinavian destinations that embrace the wonders of nature and winter to their fullest.

“You feel like you’re with family when you’re up there,” she says. Also in town are the Javri Lodge and the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, known for its glass igloos that provide glimpses of the natural wonder straight from bed. NIGHT IS YOUNG

LIGHTEN UP

No trip to Scandinavia is complete without a glimpse of the Northern Lights for which the region is so known. The natural phenomenon, caused by charged particles from the Sun that react with Earth’s upper atmosphere, creates mesmerizing light shows of greens, blues and other cool colors across a winter night’s sky. “Find them anywhere along the coast of Norway or the interior of Finland,” Ms. Peik recommends. “If you’re in Norway or Finland for more than three nights, you’re definitely going to find something,” she says. Saariselkä, Finland, is one village in Finnish Lapland where the lights can be enjoyed. Ms. Peik’s choice there is Skábma, a premium log house, nestled next to Urho Kekkonen National Park and run by two local sisters. It is the epitome of hygge, exemplifying comfort, togetherness and shelter.

A unique destination in the northernmost reaches of Norway also offers the novel sight of the Northern Lights. Svalbard, an archipelago halfway between Norway’s mainland and the North Pole, is most notable for its polar night, a two-and-a-halfmonth-long period during which there is no sunlight. Accordingly, Northern Lights in Svalbard are not limited to evening hours, but are visible during daytime, as well. “Svalbard is so unique and so far away,” says Ari Siivikko, founder of Arctic Signature. “Even if you’ve been everywhere in the world, still, when you travel there, you will be amazed.” “It’s the Arctic Wild West,” he says. “There are only 2,000 people living there, compared to more than 3,000 polar bears.” One might also spot Svalbard reindeer and Arctic foxes during a visit or see the glimmering

ice caves in Longyearbyen, which is the most populated town.

Polar Circle. Passengers are joined by scientists and other experts as they make their expedition.

Despite the frigid Arctic wilderness, locals take care to establish koselig, which is evident from the quaint village or the Funken Lodge — a boutique hotel with an immediately inviting lobby, complete with crackling fireplace, library and views of nearby glaciers.

The journey is in comfort, though, with amenities that include a heated blue lagoon pool, observation deck with Swarovski Optik telescopes and a restaurant featuring signature dishes from renowned French chef Alain Ducasse.

From Longyearbyen, curious travelers can venture further into the Arctic towards the North Pole from a luxurious cruise aboard an ice-breaking ship. “The best experience, single-handedly, is a cruise on an icebreaker,” Mr. Siivikko says. The one to achieve such a feat, Le Commandant Charcot, is the only luxury ship of its kind, transporting guests to remote stretches of the

Holmen Lofoten apart, however, is its culinary experience called Kitchen on the Edge of the World. A four-day event hosted monthly, Kitchen on the Edge of the World is led by the property’s head chef, Valentine Warner, and a rotating cast of high-end guest chefs from around the world. Throughout the experience, a small group of 20 guests participate in the making of their meals from start to finish, joining in for foraging and fishing trips before the chefs prepare their meal in an open kitchen. The chefs, too, accompany guests at the table during dinner, which is sometimes enjoyed from an island picnic and bonfire. Guests also take part in cookery and cocktail or craft demonstrations such as knife-making. “In the last 20 years, food has become a more popular part of the experience when traveling to Scandinavia, going beyond safe bets like herring or Swedish meatballs,” Ms. Peik says. “It’s a fun way of experiencing the culture.”

GREAT CATCH

Those seeking a milder climate may prefer the Lofoten Islands, also in Norway but over 700 miles away from Svalbard, conversely located in one of the country’s southernmost stretches. In warmer months, miles of cycling routes trace the jagged mountaintops that are contrasted by the cool, salty sea. Visitors may also explore Norway’s rich history with a trip to the Lofotr Viking Museum. A must-stay while in the archipelago is Holmen Lofoten. Owner Ingunn Rasmussen, the daughter of a local fisherman, breathed new life into abandoned fishers’ cabins lining the Norwegian Sea. The tranquil cabins are elevated yet authentic, lined with wood and featuring rich color palettes. What really sets the

One exhilarating option is to take a supercar out for a spin on frozen Lake Hornavan in Arjeplog, Sweden. “There’s a three-day driving program, where you first learn how to drive on the frozen lake,” Mr. Siivikko says. “After that, you can drive supercars, such as Porsches and Maseratis, as fast as 160 miles per hour on the lake. It’s crazy.” The program is arranged by Lapland Ice Driving and available to guests at Hotel Silverhatten, which offers other thrilling winter activities such as snowmobiling, alpine skiing, and reindeer and moose safaris. ANOTHER ICE-ORIENTED attraction is the wondrous Igloo Hotel at Sorrisniva in Alta, Norway. Every year, artisans and builders choose a new theme and come together to create the ice structure for the winter season, harvesting ice and snow from a nearby lake and river.

“They also have an ice bar, so you can have the experience without staying in the cold accommodations themselves,” 50 Degrees North’s Ms. Peik says.

WITH THE HIGHLANDS-CASHIERS LAND TRUST

w o r d s by e m i ly d av i s photography by andrew renfro, courtesy of the highlandscashiers land trust In the present day, the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau serves as a vacation destination for those seeking cool mountain air, prestigious golf courses, fine dining, and charming shops. While perhaps not the busiest or most bustling spot in the Southeast, the area enjoys enthusiastic popularity among those who know and love it. In recent years, our mountain towns have experienced an influx of new residents along with a consequential boom in the real estate market. But it all started with our most valuable resource: the land. Our high elevation in the Southern Appalachian Mountains provides spectacular scenery and mild summer temperatures, but the extraordinary terrain also serves as an oasis of unique flora and fauna within the region. Along with full-time locals, part-time residents, and weekend vacationers, over 250 geographically unique plant and animal species have made their homes on the Plateau and the surrounding Nantahala Forest. The HighlandsCashiers Land Trust seeks to conserve and protect that environment for us all while providing valuable benefits to homeowners and landowners who invest in the area. After 17 years of faithful service, former Executive Director Dr. Gary Wein handed the reins of the organization to Lance Hardin in June of 2023. Here, Lance shares the history of the HighlandsCashiers Land Trust, his personal experience with the Trust, and an overview of conservation practices, and gives a sneak peek at upcoming activities planned for the new year.

6 2 SILVE R CR EEK R EA L ESTATE GRO UP

HOW DID THE HIGHLANDS-CASHIERS LAND TRUST COME TO BE A PRESENCE ON THE PLATEAU? “Back in the 1880s, the Highlands Improvement Association launched efforts at attracting more permanent residents to town. Back then, it was simple things like planting flowers in window boxes and installing benches on Main Street, which was still a dirt road. Before long, Captain Prioleau Ravenel, one of the primary landowners at that time, laid a road up Satulah Mountain, and people were building homes up there. By 1909, rumors of a planned hotel venture on top of the mountain swirled around town. The Highlands Improvement Association objected to the idea of a highly visible hotel on top of Satulah, and apparently, many of the townspeople agreed with them. Within a span of two months, they had raised five hundred dollars, which of course, was a small fortune back then. The organization purchased the top of Satulah Mountain and placed it into a trust to be preserved in its natural state. Even though the name of our organization has now changed to the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust, that property remains the oldest in our care to this day. Sunset Rock, donated by the Ravenel family, became the next property added to the group’s protection in 1914. Those were the only two properties preserved by our organization until the 1970s when tax laws began to change. At that point, conservation easements became more impactful tax planning tools and began to grow in popularity. The organization began to grow as more landowners utilized the tax benefits of conservation easements, and in 1987 we formed the Highlands Land Trust. Some years later, we expanded into Cashiers and so became the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust of

get back here at some point. No question about it, I prefer the pace of life of Highlands and Cashiers to big-city life any day! I had always been fascinated by the culture and history of western North Carolina, so about eight years ago, I went back to school to seek a master’s degree in Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University in Boone. At that time, I reached out to Gary Wein and asked if I could help out as an intern. I conducted research on some of our properties and helped with various activities for the Trust. When Gary announced that he was retiring, there was some healthy competition for the job. But several people suggested I should apply for it too, and luckily the board chose me. I feel blessed to be in this role!” WHAT EXACTLY IS A CONSERVATION EASEMENT, AND WHAT BENEFITS DOES IT PROVIDE THE LANDOWNER? “Under a conservation easement, a person still owns their land. But they donate the development rights to build on that land, and in exchange, they can earn valuable tax benefits. And once under a conservation easement, no one can ever build on the land.

today. Despite the name changes throughout the years, we’re actually the oldest land trust in North Carolina. Today, we conserve over 4,000 acres on 130 separate properties in Macon and southern Jackson counties.” HOW DID YOU END UP AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE HIGHLANDSCASHIERS LAND TRUST ? “I spent 25 years as a financial consultant, and for some of that time, I was able to work remotely, before remote work became so common. From about 2006 to 2008, my wife and I lived in Highlands while I worked remotely for a company in Raleigh. So I was familiar with the area and even owned a house here. But after 2008, my company asked me to return to Raleigh. We kept the home as a weekend retreat and moved back to the capital but we were eager to

For example, a landowner might construct a house on 20 acres in Highlands. They enjoy their 20 acres of wooded property and don’t have any desire to see that cleared or to ever experience construction at their doorstep. However, they would have no say in the matter when the property changes hands, either through inheritance or a sale. But when they donate a conservation easement on some of that acreage to us, they

know it’s protected forever. And in return, they may earn a tax deduction that helps them. When considering a conservation easement, the landowner will seek an appraisal of the land, which would consider the value of the acreage if it were developed into a subdivision versus being left in a natural state. After placing their land into the easement, the owner can typically claim a federal tax benefit based on the difference between these two appraised values. Of course, each individual’s tax situation is different, and we always advise landowners to seek their own competent advisors. The deduction for conservation easements may often provide more value than a standard charitable deduction. That’s because if the value of the donated easement exceeds the usual annual charitable deduction limits, the remaining balance of a conservation easement deduction has a special carryforward period of up to 15 years. Therefore, a one-time donation of land rights to the Trust can potentially reduce the landowner’s taxable income for many years in the future.

We often joke that easements breed easements because once people learn about the benefits of the arrangement from their neighbor, they often consider placing a conservation easement on their land, too.” WHAT IF A LANDOWNER DOESN’ T WANT TO PURSUE THE CONSERVATION EASEMENT ARRANGEMENT ? CAN THEY SIMPLY DONATE LAND TO YOU OUTRIGHT ? “Yes, some landowners prefer to simply donate land to us outright, utilizing the standard charitable contribution deduction. If unable to be fully used in the year of the donation, it has a carry-forward period as well, although it’s shorter than that allowed for donations of conservation easements. There are some unbelievably generous people in Cashiers and Highlands and

But another benefit simply lies in the lifestyle. Many people appreciate living next to a conservation easement. They would rather enjoy the unspoiled forest, along with the privacy and tranquility it provides. They still own the land, and they can continue to hike on it and enjoy it as-is. They’ve just donated the building rights to us, with the knowledge that under North Carolina statute, no one will ever be able to build on land within a conservation easement.

donations of land happen more often than you might think.” OTHER THAN THE TAX DEDUCTION, ARE THERE ANY OTHER BENEFITS TO A CONSERVATION EASEMENT ? “For many landowners, this arrangement comes in handy because, under the easement, we become responsible for stewardship of the land. That means we

go out to check on it periodically, make sure no one is dumping trash or cutting trees, and ensure that no one is illegally accessing or using the land, and generally that the land is being maintained in accordance with the terms of the conservation easement. Many landowners feel safer this way, particularly those who don’t live here full-time, knowing that HCLT will help them monitor their property and preserve its natural attributes.” HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN 4,000 ACRES OF LAND? “Stewardship of the land is one of our central purposes and, in fact, is an obligation under our conservation easement agreements. We go out to each property at least once a year, and we accomplish that with both paid staff and some volunteer help. Stephanie Contreras serves as our full-time stewardship associate, and Andrew Renfro works part-time in stewardship and also with me in acquisition.” ASIDE FROM CONSERVING LAND, THE HIGHLANDS-CASHIERS LAND TRUST IS PRETTY VISIBLE IN OUR COMMUNITY. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR OTHER ACTIVITIES? Our organization encompasses four main priorities, with conservation and stewardship of land being the first two. As for the third, we conduct a number of environmental education activities, helping everyone from schoolchildren to grandparents learn about the Plateau and the incredible biodiversity of plants and animals that inhabit it. Most people don’t know this, but our area is home to over 250 species that are endemic, meaning they exist here and nowhere else in the world. They’re specially adapted and evolved to survive in this particular environment and nowhere else. Hope Corbin, our environmental education coordinator, organizes events such as group hikes, trivia nights, and a summer lecture series at the Village Green. Jessica Blackburn, our current Americorps member, conducts our children’s programs with the local schools, after-school programs, and the Boys and Girls Club. So many people are attracted to this area because it’s beautiful, but we help to explain what’s truly special about the natural resources. Advocacy for our local environment begins with learning about

it. Planting those seeds today helps to ensure the success of our organization tomorrow.” RUNNING AN ORGANIZATION LIKE THIS IS CLEARLY A COMPLEX JOB. WHAT ARE YOUR NEEDS RIGHT NOW AND GOING FORWARD? “Our fourth priority pertains to the legal and financial obligations that we face. Part of any organization is the governance. There are approximately 1,700 land trusts across the country, but only about 500 are fully accredited. The Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust is one of those that maintains full accreditation. A large part of the accreditation process revolves around ensuring that the organization reserves enough funds for things like legal or environmental challenges to the land. We also have to demonstrate that we have the processes and procedures to provide adequate safeguards for the protection of conserved lands. We are currently in the process of re-accreditation, which occurs every five years. Julie Schott oversees outreach to our donors and members, from land acquisition to fundraising events. Anyone who wants to help us preserve our local resources and support the efforts of the Land Trust is welcome to reach out to her or to me personally.” While a number of man-made amenities draw visitors, seasonal residents, and full-time dwellers to the area, it’s the natural resources that provided the original backdrop for our stunning developments here on the Plateau. Vacationers flock here for the mild climate and relaxed pace of life, but they often decide to return frequently or even stay permanently because they find themselves in awe of the beauty of our mountains. The Highlands-Cashiers Plateau is fortunate to host an organization that seeks to conserve, protect, and educate the public on our abundant natural resources. The Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust fulfills an important role in our community and will continue to provide this invaluable service for generations to come. Lance Hardin and his team express passionate dedication to our land, and they welcome your interaction and support in 2024 and beyond. Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust is located at 348 S 5th Street, Suite 214, Highlands, NC. For more information, call 828-526-1111 or visit hcltnc.org.

SEEING the LIGHT words by linsey stonchus EICHHOLTZ SPHINX CHANDELIER — L; $8,784.19. PHOTO BY OLIVER FOURNIGUET, COURTESY OF SWEETPEA & WILLOW. SWEETPEAANDWILLOW.COM

LIGHTING DESIGNERS ARE DREAMING UP N E W A P P ROAC H E S TO A H I G H END CLASSIC — THE CHANDELIER Chandeliers have long been showcased in the world’s grandest spaces. Recall the splendor of the Hall of Mirrors in the Château de Versailles, the extensive collection in Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul or the masterpiece within the Paris Opera House, which, consequently, served as a source of inspiration for The Phantom of the Opera. Once adorned with candles, modern technology has extinguished concerns of melted candlewax and expanded the realm of possibilities. For instance, Melbourne, Australia-based lighting designer Christopher Boots has brilliantly mastered old and new, incorporating ancient lostwax casting sculpture methods while embracing modern lighting capabilities. “While the chandeliers are works of art in and of themselves, there is a functional quality too — they are lights,” says James Marshall, vice president of Christopher Boots.

72 SILVE R CR EEK R EA L ESTATE GROUP

“Our pieces are connected to centuries-old artisanal processes and geology, but also contemporary LEDtechnology that allows for exacting control over the light levels within a space,” he says. SHEDDING LIGHT

While chandeliers are now synonymous with grandeur, they had much more humble beginnings. The French word chandelier fittingly translates to luster, but the English term is derived from chandelle, the word for candle. The Encyclopedia Britannica defines the fixture as “a branched candleholder — or, in modern times, electric-light holder — suspended from the ceiling.”

These hanging candleholders were first made pre-1000 C.E. of wood or iron, simply shaped and used in Anglo-Saxon churches. A couple of centuries later, large openwork hoops of iron or

On the European continent, the most elaborate chandeliers were usually made of rock crystal, but many glass chandeliers were made in Italy and Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic). Venetian chandeliers were known for their multihued glass and floral ornament. Besides Venice’s Murano, other makers of chandeliers included Baccarat, Hancock Rixon & Dunt and F. & C. Osler, with roots in Italy, Britain and Bohemia. Now, their chandeliers hang in Indian and European palaces, presidential residences, grand hotels, churches, synagogues, mosques and historic public spaces, not to mention private homes of collectors. HIGH DESIGN

Chandeliers have evolved over the millennium, mixing old designs with new. French interior designer Stéphanie Coutas fully leans into classic chandelier design

bronze supported multiple prickets, or spikes, for candles, per the Encyclopedia. Further change came along with brass chandeliers made in the late European Middle Ages, still mostly for churches, before the fixtures began gracing the ceilings of palaces and affluent homes. In the 18th century, the Netherlands gained renown for its brass chandeliers boasting a boldly shaped baluster stem terminating in a large, burnished, reflective sphere. S-shaped branches ending in sockets sprang from the stem. Fine chandeliers in silver, as well as carved and gilded wood, were made in England and France during the 18th century. Indeed, the earliest English glass chandeliers date from the 1720s and were of plain design with a ball at the base, per Encyclopedia Britannica. Eventually, these confections became quite elaborate, with glass icicles around the shaft and long cascades of pear-shaped drops.

with her aptly named Paris chandelier. The piece features diamond-cut crystals and chrome arms — an ode to the fixtures in her city and a collaboration with Baccarat, the very same artisan that made the chandeliers in Dolmabahçe Palace, among other iconic spaces. Ms. Coutas created her Paris chandelier with fellow interior designers in mind, opting for a wider diameter and shorter height to better fit most rooms, especially within residences in urban centers such as New York or Tokyo. Its dimensions serve a dual purpose, simultaneously enhancing the perceived size of a room. “Chandeliers create an illusion of a bigger room and accentuate the flow of a space,” Ms. Coutas says. “For example, when placing a horizontal chandelier in a living room, it can make the space appear wider, or, if positioning a chandelier in a staircase, it adds a sense of drama while linking the levels,” she says. Most importantly, chandeliers impact a room’s lighting. Despite their innate drama, the diffusing effect these fixtures have on both natural and synthetic light achieve a sort of calm consistency within the rooms they inhabit. “With crystal or glass chandeliers, light passes through the material and creates multiple refractions that change throughout the day depending on the natural light,” Ms. Coutas says. “Chandeliers create a focal point within a room while diffusing more light into the space and contributing to its mood and ambience,” she says. SET IN STONE

In addition to glass, diffused lighting is also achieved using natural quartz, a common material within the chandeliers from Christopher Boots. For example, his Prometheus line features uncut quartz crystals, capturing the style for which the brand is known. “Christopher Boots has been categorized as ‘rough-luxe,’ an aesthetic that embraces the handmade, simplicity and rawness while still maintaining a sense of elegance and sophistication,” Mr. Marshall says. “Christopher is deeply influenced by the natural world, and thus instills the importance of nature in our design team and the company as a whole,” he says. “There is a drive to honor materials

74 SILVE R CR EEK R EA L ESTATE GROUP

and keep them as pure as possible. We are always looking to nature as the grounding source of inspiration for the studio’s visual language and identity.” The quartz crystals of Prometheus each vary in size, shape and scale, demonstrating the uniqueness of Mother Nature. “The Prometheus range and its use of natural quartz crystal has become synonymous with Christopher Boots, and was the first piece to gain global recognition,” Mr. Marshall says. Like most of Christopher Boots’ other works, it is influenced by Greek mythology, a fitting match for the thousands-year-old stone used in the brand’s projects. Christopher Boots’ choice material, quartz, can also be found in the “sliced boulders” of Petra, a chandelier featured prominently in the Cartier flagship store in New York.

Summarizing the varied work of Mr. Boots’ design studio, Mr. Marshall describes the chandeliers as “jewelry for the home.” PERFECT PLACE

Living rooms and stairwells, as mentioned by Ms. Coutas, are excellent areas of the home to place a chandelier. Mr. Marshall also recommends adding them to dining rooms for a grand statement, especially paired with a beautiful dining room set. Other chandelier complements include “a custom lounge suite, masterfully crafted architectural elements such as a staircase or cabinetry, and even a painting or other artwork,” Mr. Marshall says. Ms. Coutas suggests creating features to further emphasize the chandelier. “I think it is interesting to work the moldings on the ceiling around the shape of the chandelier you are installing so that the space has a connection with it,” she says.

Windows, too, pair well. “Framing the piece in a large window can accentuate and complement a chandelier,” Mr. Marshall says. “Over the past three years, more of our clients have been spending extended time at their mountain homes, from Aspen to St. Moritz,” he says. “These settings provide an unmatched backdrop, and the natural qualities of the materials in our work pair perfectly with these rare landscapes.” In the case of Christopher Boots’ chandeliers, the mountains are a direct tie to the quartz adorning them. The glass crystals from Ms. Coutas’ Paris chandelier, meanwhile, may capture the shimmering natural light pooled from a window, especially in the presence of a snowy mountainside. Alternatively, achieve “a quieter moment in a powder room or bedroom,” Mr. Marshall says. “A large statement piece can really make a room, and other elements can be treated more minimally.” “We are also doing more work on yachts, which, while challenging in terms of installation, can make for a stunning installation,” he says. NO MATTER WHERE a chandelier is placed, it certainly draws the eye — an important feature in any space. “There always needs to be a focal point,” Ms. Coutas says. The sky is the limit in the ways in which residents can pair a chandelier with other elements within a home, even if it steals the show. As Mr. Marshall advises, “Don’t be scared to go big.”

LIVING LIFE ON VACATION

WITH BROKER RICK JACKSON

Residents often choose to live on the HighlandsCashiers Plateau because they follow a vision, and a unique story represents each of those visions. Rick understands those stories well because his own life has followed a trajectory quite similar to many of his clients. After establishing a bustling real estate career in Atlanta, Rick sought the solace of a mountain getaway in the early 2000s. Here, Rick and his family would unwind, reconnect with one another, and enjoy life on Lake Glenville. But what began as a vacation home quickly became a welcome detour for Rick’s professional life as he followed his passion for the mountain lifestyle. Like so many of our neighbors, Rick didn’t find the mountains; the mountains found him and his family. A glance around Rick’s office reveals insight into his dedication to his family and college baseball. Memorabilia from the University of Tennessee and Auburn University is displayed prominently, reflecting the Jackson family’s involvement with both schools’ baseball programs. Rick’s straightforward demeanor reflects a confident personality that allows him to navigate complex real estate transactions, yet he softens when speaking proudly of his three children’s accomplishments. Today, Rick works one-on-one with prospective buyers, helping them define their goals and locate the perfect property. From his warm and direct manner to his deep understanding of life on the Plateau, Rick possesses the ideal mix of skills to deliver his clients’ dreams. We recently caught up with Rick to gather his insights into local real estate and to gain a better understanding of how he uniquely approaches interactions with his clients. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A REAL ESTATE BROKER? “I earned my real estate license 25 years ago and started in commercial real estate and large developments around the Atlanta area. Then, in 2008, I purchased a home on Lake Glenville. I fell in love with the Plateau and started buying and selling properties up here. That was an exciting time for real estate locally, so I decided to expand into this market."

78 SILVE R CR EEK R EA L ESTATE GRO UP

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND WHAT LED YOU TO WORK IN REAL ESTATE. “I originally developed software using touch screen computing for data entry. I was utilizing touch screen computing back when the technology was in its infancy; in hindsight, I was probably a few years ahead of my time. After spending several years in development, I was ready to start another chapter of my life. For several months afterward, I didn’t know what I wanted to do next, but my wife, Lisa, told me to pick something and do it! I had friends in real estate, and that business intrigued me, so I started buying and selling commercial properties. One thing led to another, and I gradually transitioned into residential real estate. Residential feels much more personal, and you get to know each individual as you help them identify what’s important to them in a new home.”

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK WITH SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP ? “I had known Jochen (the owner of Silver Creek) for some time, and we often played golf together at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. As my brokerage firm got busier, working together seemed like the natural next step. Silver Creek really sets the standard for real estate marketing in this region, and the brand that Jochen has created is very appealing to me. Silver Creek goes above and beyond expectations, and I wanted to get involved and move in the same direction.” WHEN YOU’RE NOT SELLING REAL ESTATE, HOW DO YOU ENJOY SPENDING YOUR TIME? “On clear days, I spend a lot of time riding my motorcycle(s). You can’t beat mountain roads, and of course, the scenery is incredible. I also go shooting frequently, and I play a lot of golf. We have spectacular golf courses in this area. Both my son and older daughter are involved in college baseball, so we’re at a baseball game nearly every weekend from February through June. Sara Elizabeth works for Auburn University’s baseball program, and Richard is an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee, where he also played. So, between the two of them, they’re almost always at a baseball stadium somewhere in the region on the weekends. We can head off in any direction and catch a game.

Lisa and I might be the only parents in the country whose son has two college World Series rings and whose daughter has one. Over the last 5 years, both Tennessee and Auburn have each been to the College World Series in Omaha twice. It seems we are in Omaha every year! I played baseball as well, at UT Martin in western Tennessee.” Our third child, Parker, is a Junior at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and is looking to get into interior design when she graduates in 2025. WHAT GOALS ARE YOU WORKING TOWARD IN 2024? “I wouldn’t say I have one particular goal I hope to reach. The main things I strive to do are serve this community, educate clients about our area, and help buyers find the perfect property to match their wants and needs. Whenever I sell a home, I end up becoming friends with the new owners. We go golfing together or meet up for dinner. I’ve developed many great relationships in this line of work, so it’s not just about buying and selling houses. In that sense, I’m always reaching my goals every single day I work here. I want to continue providing that service for as many people as possible.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SEASON ON THE PLATEAU? “I like it all! Every season on the Plateau has something special to offer. Winter is less busy, of course, so you get that cozy small-town feeling. Spring, summer, and fall are beautiful, and the weather allows you to spend time outdoors. Even though I live here most of the time anyway, I’d be thrilled to live here full-time, too. I would say that the climate is our greatest resource. People feel drawn to the Plateau for the cooler summer temperatures and to escape the heat and humidity of places like Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. And everyone seems to love the fall season in particular because the leaves are changing color, and the views are amazing.” WHAT ARE YOUR CLIENTS’ FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT LIFE ON THE PLATEAU? “Each person has their own reason for being here. Some people come up here primarily for the golf courses. Social people love Groovin’ on the Green

on Friday nights in the summer or the Leaf Festival and the Highlands Food and Wine festival in the fall. For nature lovers who want a retreat away from the city — maybe they’re not here for events at all. They just want to wake up to a beautiful view of the mountains or look out onto one of our lakes. We truly have something for everyone.” OUTSIDE OF THE PLATEAU, WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL? “My wife loves traveling and she goes all over, typically with a group of friends, and on occasion, I will accompany her on a trip. We’ve recently been to Europe and just returned from the Lake George area in Upstate New York. As for me, I typically prefer to stay here because I’m already living life on vacation. I get a taste of city life when I go down to Atlanta, but otherwise, I have everything I want to do right here on the Plateau.”

to you, such as location and amenities, I can help you find the perfect property.” WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE THING YOU’VE LEARNED WHILE WORKING AS A BROKER? “The most important thing, to me as a broker, is to listen to what people say to you. When I start communicating with prospective buyers, they will tell me what they like. I can pick up subtle nuances regarding their tastes and lifestyle, such as the style of architecture they prefer or the activities they enjoy.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE STARTING THEIR SEARCH FOR A HOME ON THE PLATEAU? “Come visit and spend three days or so in the area. Drive around, tour some neighborhoods, and let’s look at a variety of properties all over. You need to experience life here and see everything the area has to offer, and then we can hone in on what you specifically want. Some people aim for a golf course neighborhood with a country club, some want to live on Lake Glenville, and others prefer a more rustic cabin or even a luxury home tucked away in the woods.

Often, my clients will send me a few listings that appeal to them, and I can put together a clear picture of what they’re looking for. Armed with that knowledge, I can often pinpoint several properties that fit their specifications. The most important thing is for me to understand what my clients value so that I can match them with the home of their dreams.”

I just helped a couple who love tennis, so they wanted to live near a racquet club. We found exactly what they were looking for. Many of my buyers tour several country club neighborhoods, and one in particular feels like home. But let’s spend a few days together first so I can help you get acquainted with the area and discuss the type of life you want here. Once I get a solid idea of what matters

The desire for the mountain lifestyle led him to search for property in the area for several years until he found the perfect piece of land on which to build a dream home.

Brothers Television in Atlanta, before parlaying his corporate experience and skills into real estate more than a decade ago. A University of Missouri alumnus, Chuck is perennially one of the top real estate brokers on the Plateau.

Intended to be a second residence until Chuck’s retirement, the home soon took precedence; the lure of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains inspired him to say “goodbye” to the intense pace, traffic, and heat of Atlanta when construction was completed. And so, the simplicity and splendor of full-time mountain living began. A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Chuck enjoyed a successful sales career in the television and entertainment industry, experiencing multiple relocations and finishing as vice president of sales for Raycom Sports in Charlotte and Warner

When he’s not helping clients, Chuck enjoys hiking, golfing, fitness activities, cooking, reading, and boating on Lake Glenville. He is an active contributor to the Cashiers community, having previously served in board positions with the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina, and the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors. Currently, Chuck serves on the board of the Blue Ridge School Education Foundation. He is an active member of Mountaintop Golf & Lake Club and the club at Lonesome Valley. He looks forward to mountain visits from his daughter in Atlanta and his son, daughter-in-law, and two grandsons in Nashville.

Ray Trine’s passion for all things real estate blossomed early in his life. After graduating with an accounting degree from the University of North Florida in 1971, he immediately launched his real estate career. Initially employed by Florida National Bank’s holding company, he later became CFO of American Federal Savings and Loan, financing homes and commercial properties and working on building and development projects. He quickly learned that he belonged out in the field making things happen, rather than crunching numbers in an office. By 1982, the Trine family included five children, five dogs, and four cats. His quest for a better quality of life brought him to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, where he immediately recognized what an idyllic existence it would provide. He packed up his entire menagerie and moved from an oceanfront home in Atlantic Beach, FL, to his newly acquired farm in Glenville, NC. His family continued to grow, expanding to include llamas, donkeys, cows, goats, sheep, turkeys and chickens. Now with seven children and thirteen grandchildren, he knows he made the right choice! Once ensconced in the mountains, Ray wasted no time earning his North Carolina Broker’s license. He went to work for one of the oldest real estate firms in the area, V.C. Smith Real Estate, which he bought outright two years later. He soon

made his mark as the #1 real estate office in sales and listings in the Cashiers area for many years running. Ray proceeded to shape the area with his active involvement in the sale of land tracts, as well as the development of many residential communities such as Bald Rock, Summer Hill, Glenshore, Trillium Links & Lake Club, Bear Lake Reserve, Bridge Creek, Glen Laurel, and Glen Pointe. With such a large family, community involvement was also important to Ray. He has been president of the Blue Ridge School PTA, elected to the Jackson County School Board, and served on the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Lake Glenville and many private community boards and architectural review committees. Coupled with his dedicated community involvement, Ray’s background in accounting, property development, and real estate sales has provided him with priceless insights into this unique area. Ray is the quintessential guide to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, offering personal experience, countless and fascinating local narratives, and seemingly limitless knowledge of mountain living. Ray is licensed in both North Carolina and South Carolina. Ray is a seasoned professional who brings enthusiasm, vision, and over 45 years of experience to the team at Silver Creek Real Estate Group.

As shortened days and frosty nights descend over North America, vacationers seek refuge in Boca Grande, Florida, where the sun beams its comforting warmth and ocean breezes soothe winter-weary souls. There lies a historic island gem, The Gasparilla Inn & Club. The iconic resort, steeped in tradition, offers a blend of timeless elegance and modern luxury on Gasparilla Island off Florida’s western coastline. Though popular year-round, the inn serves as a beacon for those escaping the frigid north during colder months. In the late 1800s, Boca Grande represented a remote and untamed outpost on Florida’s southwest coast, but much has changed over the past century and a half. Initially constructed in 1913, The Gasparilla serves as a testament to Florida’s transformation into a premier destination for travelers nationwide. In its early days, the hotel served as a seasonal getaway for notable historical figures such as J.P. Morgan, Henry duPont, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone, establishing Gasparilla Island as an acclaimed hotspot for tycoons who often arrived by yacht. Today, The Gasparilla represents one of the largest surviving resorts of the early 20th-century, with the addition of numerous modernizing upgrades throughout the years. The inn exudes a captivating sense of history with its

Mediterranean Revival-style architecture, white stucco facades, and lush greenery. Owners and staff strive to maintain the essence of a bygone era while seamlessly incorporating the modern amenities sought by travelers today. A HISTORIC SETTING COMPLEMENTED BY MODERN LUXURY

Each of the original inn’s rooms and suites, furnished with period-appropriate décor and modern conveniences, provide a harmonious blend of comfort and elegance. In recent years, the property has expanded its accommodations with the addition of luxury cottages and suites that offer spacious living areas, private terraces, and state-of-the-art facilities. The new units allow guests to relish the privacy of a home away from home while

of the inn, functions as a popular gathering place for guests from mid-day to late-night. Grab a drink or lunch, and head out onto the terrace for a view of the fifth green of The Gasparilla Golf Club and the Charlotte Harbor in the distance. For the active vacationer, a range of recreational pleasures awaits on Gasparilla Island. The Pete Dye-designed golf course presents challenge and delight for guests of all skill levels, with its unparalleled views and consistently temperate weather. Nearly seven thousand yards of par-72 course await the island golfer. The tennis courts, alongside the croquet lawns, provide opportunities for friendly competition and leisurely games. No matter how visitors spend their time outdoors, incoming breezes from both Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico supply balmy relief. The more adventurous might find themselves traipsing down to the inn’s private beaches and pursuing a variety of aquatic adventures such as

enjoying the famous world-class service and social activities of the inn and club. Foodies consistently find The Gasparilla a welcome balm for the senses. With multiple dining options, guests can savor a variety of cuisines, from classic American to fresh seafood. The inn’s classic restaurant, The Pink Elephant, has tantalized taste buds with its innovative menu and captivating ambiance for more than 60 years. Indulge in Crispy Thai Grouper or Pan Roasted Red Snapper for lunch, and don’t overlook classic Southern appetizers like Smoked Fish Dip or White Cheddar and Pimento cheese. As a 2023 recipient of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, the Pink Elephant staff are certain to guide diners toward the most fitting wine to complement their coastal cuisine. The inn is also home to the popular Beach Club restaurant, serving delectable dishes and poolside cocktails and overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The Gasparilla Salad or a plate of Grilled Fish Tacos make for a healthy but luxurious beachside lunch. BZ’s, located on the main floor

paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing. Explore the island from unique vantage points, enjoying familiar and much-loved activities in a refreshing, sunnier landscape. The on-site spa provides rejuvenating treatments after a long day of recreation beneath the Florida sunshine. Hospitable spa staff provide guidance toward the ultimate restorative treatments, particularly during winter months, such as steam rooms, saunas, a variety of massage techniques, and acupuncture. A private courtyard creates the setting for a heated, 80-foot lap pool. UPCOMING EVENTS ON GASPARILLA ISLAND

A winter escape should always pair with fresh seafood and plentiful pours of wine. Those principles form the basis for The Gasparilla's Annual Food & Wine Weekend in January. Guests flock to the event to learn cooking techniques from the region’s leading chefs, taste perfectly paired wines from around the world, and attend the Master Chef’s Dinner on Saturday evening. The intimate atmosphere encourages attendees, guest chefs, and skilled vintners to mingle and

share their passion for cuisine and wine. Over the weekend of February 24 to 25, runners participate in one of the season’s main events, the 2024 Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic Race Weekend. The course offers stunning scenic views of the island for those daring enough to take up the challenge. Numerous races, spread across the two-day event, offer opportunities for athletes of all abilities and skill levels, and as one would expect on Gasparilla Island, the weather provides warm accommodation for both participants and spectators alike. For culture vultures fleeing their northern climes, the Boca Grande Film Festival fulfills a craving for the visual arts. Held from February 21 to 23, the event aims to stimulate audiences with an array of riveting independent films and impactful documentaries. Cast a vote for a favorite film or participate in exclusive virtual events throughout the three-day extravaganza. THE TOWN OF BOCA GRANDE

While guests never need to leave The Gasparilla grounds, nearby Boca Grande provides diversion aplenty. The town, with its charming streets and friendly atmosphere, offers a pleasant escape combined with indulgent shopping and dining opportunities. Visit local boutiques, art galleries, and pristine beaches, or spend an afternoon at the Barrier Island Parks Society's Port Boca Grande Lighthouse & Museum. Nearby, The Gasparilla Island State Park provides a relaxed setting for bird watching and nature hikes, allowing guests to connect with the area’s natural beauty. Rent a bike to experience the Boca Grande Rail Trail or venture out onto the water to discover the nearby barrier island, Cayo Costa. Nine miles of unspoiled shoreline allow for uninterrupted swimming or fishing. With its rich history, modern updates, and exciting social calendar, The Gasparilla invites guests to experience classic Floridian beauty along with contemporary comfort. As the wind blows cold this winter, discriminating travelers find themselves following it south to the brighter and more welcoming shores of Boca Grande.

Perched at over 4,250 feet in elevation and tucked against Whiteside Mountain, lies one of the best-kept secrets in Highlands, North Carolina. Wildcat Cliffs Country Club provides an intimate social lifestyle for its members, who come to the mountains for the agreeable weather and scenery but end up staying for the lasting bonds formed within their gates. As an invitationonly private club, Wildcat Cliffs members participate enthusiastically in all aspects of their community, from developing new amenities to recruiting new friends.

cocoon of lush greenery, comfortable amenities, and close friends, the grounds almost feel like the set of a television series — one revolving around joyful characters and hopeful storylines.

When asked why Highlands residents choose Wildcat Cliffs Country Club, Director of Membership Nikki Sloop replies simply, “Like most clubs, we provide great amenities. But our members come here to form lifelong friendships. Essentially, they’re here for each other, and it’s the members who truly define life at Wildcat Cliffs.”

Indeed, a planned one-hour tour of the clubhouse and grounds could easily take twice as long. Curious residents, excited to see a new face, often reach out to visitors to begin an acquaintance. In a community so welcoming, a quick trip to Wildcat could turn into a day on the golf course.

Entering the gates at Wildcat Cliffs, one immediately senses an atmospheric shift. The world outside the club falls away, and the here and now come into sharp focus. Enveloped in a

“I often say it’s like going back to Mayberry times,” laughs Sloop. “Everyone knows their neighbors and you’re greeted by name everywhere you go. You might walk down the street and receive an invitation to play croquet right now, or you could enter the dining room where friends ask you to join their table.”

“That’s another thing our members love about Wildcat,” Sloop remarks. “With just 340 members, it’s feasible to grab a tee time or plan a dinner reservation on the spur of the moment. We don’t typically need to plan our activities weeks in advance.”

That same intimate feeling of neighborliness helped the Wildcat Cliffs community peacefully weather the recent pandemic years together. When indoor activities became off-limits, the game of golf enjoyed a resurgence of interest at the club. And because members expressed interest in continuing to socialize, the organization constructed a new area for al fresco dining. In a time when so many sought sanctuary, Wildcat Cliffs enveloped its members in safety while allowing seasonal merriment to continue. IT ’S NO WONDER ABOUT 30 OF WILDCAT ’S MEMBER FAMILIES CHOOSE TO STAY ON THE PLATEAU YEAR-ROUND. WHILE THE SOCIAL CALENDAR OF THE CLUB RUNS FROM MAY 1 TO OCTOBER 31, THE PRIVATE INDOOR HEATED POOL AND FITNESS FACILITIES REMAIN AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT THE OFF-SEASON. REMARKABLY, THE CLUB ALSO MAINTAINS THE AREA’S ONLY YEAR-ROUND GOLF COURSE, CLOSING ONLY WHEN TEMPERATURES DIP BELOW 45 DEGREES.

Not wanting to miss any of the fun, seasonal residents typically make their homes at Wildcat for three to six months of the year. Club staff affectionately refer to programming as “adult summer camp,” referencing the jam-packed social calendar and variety of active outdoor amenities. Between rounds of golf, pickleball games, numerous planned excursions, and professional croquet and racquetball lessons, schedules stay happily busy. The season kicks off with the annual Welcome Back party in May, featuring a wide array of food and wine vendors, entertainment from a live band, and a dance floor. For the next six months, until the season closes with a Halloween bash, a whirlwind of activities keeps everyone engaged and sharing experiences daily. Keeping to the theme of summer camp, Camp Wildcat in the summer provides a unique opportunity for families to reconnect. Held the weekend after the Fourth of July each year, the multi-generational event places kids, parents, and grandparents on teams together. Friendly competition between families, in contests such

as tug-of-rope or the three-legged race, stands as a long-running Wildcat Cliffs tradition. It’s not uncommon for those who grew up attending during the 1960s and 1970s to return with their own children and grandchildren today. HOWEVER, ONE DOESN’ T REQUIRE A LARGE EXTENDED FAMILY — OR EVEN A SPOUSE — TO PARTICIPATE IN PLANNED EVENTS. SINGLE CLUB MEMBERS FREQUENTLY ORGANIZE THEIR OWN EXCURSIONS, AND THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE STRIVES TO ENSURE THAT NO NEIGHBOR IS EVER LEFT OUT OF THE FUN. AT EVENTS SUCH AS TWILIGHT GOLF, TYPICALLY A COUPLES GOLF GAME AND DINNER, A SINGLE MEMBER MIGHT BE INVITED TO FILL IN FOR A NONGOLFING SPOUSE WHO LATER JOINS THE EVENING MEAL . INCLUSION REPRESENTS A STRONG CORE VALUE AT WILDCAT CLIFFS, WHERE MEMBERSHIP AND FRIENDSHIP GO HAND IN HAND. Because enthusiastic participation is such a prevailing theme throughout the community, many amenities within Wildcat Cliffs were

originally planned and even funded by the members themselves. While the organization pours considerable resources into ongoing additions each season, residents often take up their own projects as well. Back in 2005, a group pooled funds and purchased property on the shore of Lake Glenville, making Wildcat Cliffs one of only three area clubs to offer lake access to members. To this day, the Glenville Lake Club and its boat shares are managed by dedicated Wildcat members. Other member-organized endeavors include the new short-game pavilion, playground, and dog park. Yes, dogs are a welcome part of the Wildcat family, too. The environment is so canine-friendly that members often bring their furry pals to dine on the outdoor club patio, and each year the community hosts its own Wildminster Dog Show. Named after the famous Westminster competition, the annual favorite event allows participants a festive and casual atmosphere in which to show off their beloved pets. The passion

for pooches extends to members individually, as many are actively involved with the HighlandsCashiers Humane Society, which held its annual Wags and Whiskers gala on the property in 2023. When asked about new events for 2024, Sloop reports, “There’s something new every day! Yes, we’ll hold our favorite annual events, and we listen and respond to requests for new programming, too. But the underlying goal of every member, in every season, is to essentially celebrate life together.” Gazing across the picturesque golf course, with the ancient Whiteside Mountain towering above, it’s easy to see how the bonds formed at Wildcat truly last a lifetime.

Imagine a boutique experience lounging on a plush settee with an espresso or glass of Champagne before perusing sumptuous racks of beautiful clothing, choosing the perfect bag and shoes from a towering, backlit wall and leisurely adding the final touches to your hair in a space styled just for you. But all of this is happening in your own home — in your closet.

OPEN THE DOOR

Closets do not have to be haphazardly crammed with garments, shoes hanging lifelessly on the back of the door, a place where you grab your tie from — if you can find the one you want — and run. Thoughtfully designed dressing rooms can be relaxing, personalized places to start and end the day.

“We do spend so much time in our bathrooms and our closets, and normally we forget to actually enjoy that time,” says Doniphan Moore, principal of Doniphan Moore Interiors in Dallas, Texas. “By really putting the effort in, I think you create the experience that you have.”

“An organized, well-thought-out, beautiful closet becomes a retreat for the homeowner to escape to and enjoy each time they enter it,” says Melissa Adair, senior project manager for the Florida-based Marc-Michaels Interior Design. “It’s refreshing to have everything nicely displayed and organized and makes it a pleasure to get ready for the day.”

Getting dressed is, or at least should be, an experience. Many spend a lot of time and money collecting curated closets full of designer duds, accessories and high-wattage jewels, and these all need a proper home and a special place for their owner to appreciate them while getting ready.

The place where one gets dressed is incredibly personal, and should both reflect the individual and make them feel good, setting the mood for each day. “You want to feel special; you want to feel confident; you want to feel happy,” says Julie Dodson, founder and creative director of the Houston, Texas-based Dodson Interiors.

NC LIVI NG W I NT E R 2024 109

“[A closet] should be a space that just puts a smile on your face,” she says. “You’ve got all your favorite things around you.” A customized closet is both a reflection of an individual’s own impeccable style and a space that needs to remain functional, with an optimized layout and a spot for everything. Mr. Moore recommends thinking about the design-standard “kitchen triangle” of refrigerator, sink and stove, but for getting dressed. The “closet triangle” could be clothing storage, a place to sit while putting on shoes and a full-length mirror for checking out the final ensemble. And leaving enough space in between is key. “By having things a little more spread out and less crammed, I think it allows the person who’s living with those things to appreciate those things more, by showing everything so beautifully,” Mr. Moore advises. “Presentation is everything right?”

DRESS IT UP

Not everything needs to be seen, however, and using a mix of both open and closed storage keeps things clean and organized. Rows and rows of clothes on hangers not only look messy and monotonous, but take the focus off of the good stuff. Hiding some items in drawers and behind doors while displaying special pieces lets the best shine. “I like to display eye-catching items — the beautiful bags and shoes, maybe a gorgeous dress — and hide the more day-to-day items,” Ms. Adair says. There are also collectors who want to have their prized possessions on view, from walls of handbags and shoes to glass-top cases for jewelry and watches. This makes for both a happy place and one that is visually stunning. Functional pieces can also add to the aesthetic. While a closet may only be seen by the household it serves, and usually by only one or two members,

that does not mean the furniture in it need be boring. In fact, the opposite is true. Choosing beautiful chests, dressers, tables and vanities levels-up the experience.

— and can be as outré as one wants since it lives in a hidden-away place. Some choose to lean ultra-feminine or masculine, while others opt for a decadent mix of both in a shared space.

Seating is another important addition, from the practical bench to posh sofas and chairs for lounging — and sharing the space with friends and family.

Either way, layering luxe materials such as lacquered wood, marble, brass, glass, silk carpeting, velvet upholstery and crystal light fixtures ensures an all-out glam factor, and focusing lighting on displayed pieces makes them pop.

Another must-have, the floor-length mirror, can also be a focal point for gathering with loved ones. Ms. Dodson likes to install a threeway version, whenever space allows, for viewing all angles. “I put one in a client’s closet years ago,” she says. “She had three daughters, and they would all get dressed in there and check themselves out in that mirror. Again, it makes you feel special. It’s like your own little space.” A dry bar or coffee nook adds to the social ambiance, or also becomes a perfect getaway spot for some alone time.

A closet is also the perfect place to showcase personal photographs and sentimental objects, Ms. Adair advises — a reminder that it is a place all to oneself. “These rooms are such little jewel box moments,” Ms. Dodson says. “Creating those places and little moments that allow you to escape life for a minute — that closet is your space.” Text reproduced with permission from Luxury Portfolio International and Luxury Portfolio magazine. © Luxury Portfolio International. At the turn of the 20th century, Willis and Laura Sims settled in a high valley with clear 40-mile vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains in the west. They built a rustic mountain home, lived off the land, and raised their six children here. Today, the valley is home to Sims Valley — a unique mountain community built in the same spirit as the Sims family homestead. It is a place of beauty, a place for families, a place where residents live in harmony with the nature that surrounds them. Located between the historic towns of Cullowhee and Cashiers, Sims Valley provides its homeowners with the feeling of living within a national park, rather than a resort community. Intersected by winding nature trails, designed by Trail Dynamics (who often design for the National Park Service), Sims Valley offers many opportunities to let their residents’ spirits soar with the natural splendor that is housed within this oneof-a-kind property. The peaceful sound of cascading waterfalls, the exotic fragrance of mountain laurel and native wildflowers, and the awe-inspiring sight of the Smokies blend together for an exceptional outdoor experience. Go shopping or dining in Cashiers or Highlands, explore Nantahala National Forest, take a boat ride on Lake Glenville, or enjoy the many amenities that Sims Valley has to offer. The Sims Family Homestead still stands and now serves as a community gathering place. In fact, there is no shortage of places for the community to gather together at Sims Valley. The Mountain Clubhouse contains a fitness center and spa, swimming pool, large great room with fireplace, caterer’s kitchen, outdoor grill, and two outdoor fireplaces, paired with some of the most amazing views available at the

property. The Mountain Chapel — located at the north end of the property — offers an open-air gathering place for Sims Valley residents to enjoy a picnic, a roaring fire in the outdoor fireplace, or breathtaking vista of the valley and the mountains beyond.

Planning a Legacy on the Plateau WITH THE NEW DIRECTOR OF THE CASHIERS HISTORICAL SOCIETY

w o r d s by e m i ly d av i s photography by courtney snyder

132 S ILVE R CR EEK R EA L ESTATE GRO UP

Confucius once advised his disciples, “Study the past if you would define the future.” The Cashiers Historical Society, long a staple of education, preservation, and outreach on the Plateau, embraces that philosophy wholeheartedly. With the addition of a new Executive Director in May 2023, the Society has poised itself to take center stage in the community next year and well into the future. Those who record history today leave an invaluable legacy for the researchers of tomorrow. To deepen public understanding of life in Cashiers, the Historical Society seeks to engage the community in ongoing outreach and research projects. Executive Director Amelia Golcheski, a historian with a view toward the future, shares her plans for the organization in 2024 and beyond. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. HOW DID YOU FIND YOURSELF IN A LEADERSHIP ROLE WITH THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY? “Growing up near Lynchburg, Virginia, I was surrounded by a rich history. With all the Civil War battlefields and popular destinations like Colonial Williamsburg, I had so many opportunities to learn about the past. I fell in love with history as a child. Now I’m finishing my dissertation to earn a PhD in Appalachian Women’s History. One of my primary interests as a historian is to make history as accessible to as wide an audience as possible. I previously worked at Monticello and the National Museum of American History. Then, the Cashiers Historical Society reached out to me and offered this job. I felt it was the perfect intersection of my specialization in Appalachian history and my personal dream of working closely with the public in a museum setting.” WERE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA BEFORE MOVING HERE? “I traveled to this region plenty of times as a student in Atlanta, seeking to escape the city. So I already loved the mountains of North Carolina. It’s easy to see why people in Atlanta, Charleston, and Florida want to flee the heat and humidity by vacationing here! When I received the job offer, I was thrilled to take it because Appalachian history and particularly the lives and contributions of women in this region are the focus of my research.”

HOW ARE YOU LIKING LIFE ON THE PLATEAU? “The main thing I love about Cashiers is the smalltown vibe. I can walk into a local restaurant and wave to my neighbors or get to know the workers at the grocery store by name. Everywhere you go, everyone is so warm and welcoming. There’s such a feeling of connection here. I also just love being in the mountains. I spend as much time as possible hiking, kayaking, and searching for waterfalls. Especially in the summer, it’s so easy to spend all day outside here.” AS YOU’VE DELVED INTO OUR LOCAL HISTORY, WHAT CAUGHT YOUR INTEREST SO FAR? DO YOU HAVE ANY COMPELLING STORIES TO SHARE? “Cashiers, or any small town, essentially serves as a microcosm through which we can view regional and even national history. How did the famous events that we all learn about in school impact the average person? And what role did the average person play in those circumstances? For example, we’ve always heard the Civil War described as “brother against brother” in terms of how it divided the nation. But that was quite literally true here. One of the area’s founding families, the Zachary family, was torn apart by the war. Part of the family sided with the North, and the other part with the South. Those divisions lasted the rest of their lives, and they were deliberately buried apart from one another. You can visit their graves at the Upper and Lower Zachary Cemeteries. That’s the type of history that I love. We think it’s all about the big names, like Washington and Jefferson, but regular people make up most of society. They participate just as much in the creation of history, and it’s fascinating to view it through the lens of their individual perspectives.” RUMOR HAS IT THAT YOU’RE TAKING THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY IN SOME NEW DIRECTIONS IN 2024. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE PLANNED? “We’re still holding the traditional events, like Airing of the Quilts in the spring. Every year we celebrate this old Appalachian custom when women would bring the family’s quilts outside in the spring and air them out after a long winter stuck indoors. This is such a great chance to explore the daily lives of

NC LIV I NG W I NT E R 2024 13 3

women in this region and how they participated in and shaped their communities. Our Summer Symposium is in June and will focus on the history of tourism in the area. Tourism, of course, is one of our big industries here, but it’s changed quite a bit over the years. In fact, the Zachary Tolbert house here on our property was originally a boarding house for weary visitors trekking through the mountains. Now people come here for the prestigious golf courses and resorts. It’s interesting to reflect on the history of tourism on the Plateau and ask ourselves what direction it will take next. We also plan to become more visible at local events, like Groovin' on the Green, throughout the summer and The Leaf Festival in October. You’ll see our booths in the park, and we’ll interact directly with residents and visitors. Perhaps our most exciting endeavor is the oral history project we plan to introduce next year. As the community’s historical society, our goal is to document the lives of Plateau residents. We’ll do this through personal interviews, asking locals to tell their stories. We don’t often think about it, but we’re all actively forming our culture and history every day. Everything we do impacts one another and even influences the shape of the future. In fifty years, we can examine these interviews and understand what life was like in Cashiers in 2023.” YOU MAKE SUCH A GREAT POINT ABOUT OUR SHARED HISTORY. HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED THAT FUTURISTIC, DYSTOPIAN NOVELS LIKE 1984 AND BRAVE NEW WORLD, WHICH ARE SO POPULAR RIGHT NOW, FEATURE A THEME OF ERASING HISTORY? “Oh, absolutely. Those worlds are built around the concept that a people’s history and culture have been stolen from them. That’s part of the horror of those stories. We should always strive to protect our knowledge of the past because it belongs to us all. We can learn from it, and use those lessons moving forward.” AS AN AVID HISTORY BUFF, WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN READING LATELY? DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE AUTHORS? “I’ve been fascinated by the Gilded Age lately, so a recent favorite has been Astor: The Rise and Fall of an American Fortune, by Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe. It chronicles the Astor family and

134 S ILVE R CR EEK R EA L ESTATE GRO UP

how they built their empire. I never knew beaver fur was such a hot commodity back then! And the job sounds like such a brutal way to earn a living. Emily Wilson’s translation of the Iliad, which would normally be a difficult read, flows like an action movie. It’s an entirely different experience that I strongly recommend. Also, Ron Rash, whom I believe still teaches at Western Carolina University, writes quite a lot about regional history. His novel, Serena, portrays the reality of the logging industry in the 1930s. He also published a wonderful collection of short stories, Nothing Gold Can Stay, which features settings throughout our area, like the casino over in Cherokee. His work made me want to become a writer.” HOW CAN THE CASHIERS COMMUNITY BEST SUPPORT THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY? “We always need volunteers to work as tour guides, help organize our archives, and run our events. But next year, I hope the community will come out to take part in the oral history project. Each of our residents is actively participating in and creating local history right now, and I want to document their experiences and perspectives. Everyone plays an important role in this community, and every voice matters. As we shape the present and past, we also help to determine the future. Therefore, everything we do today impacts our town and even the world. Our local history deserves to be recognized and preserved.” Whether participating in cultural events, attending the Summer Symposium, or donating time to the Historical Society, both full-time and part-time residents of Cashiers stand to gain valuable education and interaction from the

organization in 2024. Perhaps more importantly, we’re presented with the opportunity to leave a piece of our own legacy to future generations. The participation of all community members is vital to preserving traditional Appalachian heritage, documenting local current events, and even shaping the future of tourism on the Plateau. Many decades from now, future researchers and schoolchildren will reap the benefits of the

Society’s efforts today. For more information on the Historical Society’s upcoming programming, remember to refer to our NC Living events schedules throughout the year. The Cashiers Historical Society is located at 1940 Highway 107S, Cashiers, NC. For more information, call 828-743-7710 or visit cashiershistoricalsociety.org.

WARMING UP AT THE MIAMI INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

136 S ILVE R CR EEK R EA L ESTATE GRO UP

As much of the nation indulges in winter sports or huddles by the fireplace, the Sunshine State welcomes over 100,000 visitors to its annual Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show from February 14 to 18. Owned by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and in partnership with the International Yacht Brokers Association, Discover Boating aims to help both casual and serious boating enthusiasts explore life on the water with the largest boat and yacht show in the world. More than 1,000 brands will present over 1,000 different vessels, allowing participants to explore kayaks, boats, yachts, superyachts, and everything in between. Demonstrations of the latest innovations in marine technology and accessories will round out the exhibition. On land, engage in educational seminars and personal experiences with a wide variety of water sports and marine products at the Miami Beach Convention Center and Pride Park. Vendors supply an array of culinary experiences and innovative cocktails to please any palate, and children’s activities keep the youngest visitors happily engaged.

Multiple locations provide the backdrop for in-water components of the show: explore powerboats and motor yachts up to 125 feet at Herald Plaza, investigate sailboats, catamarans, and sailing accessories at Museum Park Marina, or take a trial vessel out for a spin at the Venetian Marina. Yacht Haven Grande at Island Gardens hosts the ultimate opulent experience of the weekend, The Superyacht Miami experience, allowing guests to interact with some of the most impressive luxury vessels in the world. Featured superyachts include the world-renowned Amels Gene Machine and its support vessel, the Daman Yachting Gene Chaser. Access to this exclusive event is granted to Windward VIP or SuperYacht Miami ticket holders. For those who prefer a more intimate atmosphere, the Windward VIP Experience provides a unique opportunity. Perks of the program will include admission to Superyacht Miami, access to private VIP lounges, a premium open bar, gourmet refreshments, and Luxury Sponsorship Activations. Enjoy complimentary shuttles and water taxis with VIP service. On Friday, February 17, Yachts After Dark presents an astonishing array of yachts illuminated against the picturesque Miami skyline. Enjoy music, cocktails, and interaction with participating boat builders and brokerages. Later in the evening,Commissioner Mark Neifeld of Sport

Fishing Championship hosts the Sky Elements Drone Show. VIP guests also receive one-day admission to Art Wynwood, held at Herald Plaza concurrently with Discover Boating. For the eleventh year, the contemporary and modern art fair draws a diverse and culturally savvy audience. With more than 50 international galleries presenting cutting-edge works ranging from pop surrealism to street art, Art Wynwood satisfies even the most discriminating art patrons. Discover Boating attracts a crowd, but those who prefer a quiet oasis away from the hustle and bustle can find refuge at Mr. C Coconut Grove. The hotel, a personal favorite of Silver Creek President Jochen Lucke, pairs luxe accommodations with contemporary amenities for a stay as refreshing as it is convenient to downtown festivities. Enjoy brunch at Bellini’s on the rooftop, which offers a sweeping vista of Biscayne Bay and the Coconut Grove skyline, before joining other marine life enthusiasts just a few miles away.

While Discover Boating offers abundant amenities, the bay view atmosphere and emphasis on marine life could leave attendees craving a taste of expertly crafted seafood. A visit to Casadonna rounds out the weekend on a high note. Ensconced within a Mediterranean Revival building in Miami’s Edgewater neighborhood, the waterfront restaurant provides the ideal setting to unwind after the show. Known as the most challenging dinner reservation to obtain in Miami, Casadonna treats guests to southern Italian-inspired dishes with a strong emphasis on coastal cuisine. Traditional recipes from Naples, Taormina, Bari, Positano, and Gaeta are presented in contemporary fashion, paired with a generous wine list and bespoke cocktails. Casadonna’s famed tuna tartare begins the evening on a high note, and compositions of lobster, scallops, octopus, and more thrill even the most discriminating diners. Weekend visitors who prefer to travel on the water might opt for Zuma, where diners often

arrive by yacht. The waterfront, modern Japanese restaurant offers views of the Miami River and Brickell Key, perfect for observing marine traffic and local nightlife. At the edge of downtown Miami, Zuma promises internationally acclaimed, modern Japanese izakaya dining to both lunch and dinner patrons. As temperatures plummet throughout the rest of the country, the lifestyle and adventure of Miami burn as brightly as ever. Whether arriving by air, land, or water, February offers a warm welcome and an abundance of cultural diversions over Valentine’s Day weekend and beyond.
