Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team has moved into larger, rented premises at Devonshire Meadows, Roborough after relocating from Widewell. The team are hoping to raise £150,000 in the next two years to purchase the property and install an extra floor. To help with fundraising efforts, a member of the team has written a book about the moor's geology. Ken Ringwood has penned the Dartmoor's Tors and Rocks paperback, which has been printed and published by Plymouth University. And the foreword was written by the team's patron Professor Iain Stewart, professor of geosciences communication, at the university's school of geography, earth and environmental sciences. The book describes how tors and associated features may have formed, features a map showing the relative positions of tors and rocks and has more than 365 colour photographs. "It will be a useful reference book for anyone interested in Dartmoor," a team spokesman said. University of the Third Age (U3A) There will be an inaugural meeting for a new U3A on Thursday, January 30th at 2pm in the Roborough Suite of the Woolwell Centre. Are you retired or semi-retired? Barnardo’s Donation Centre, Woolwell Barnardo’s has just opened what is believed to be Plymouth’s first donation centre at Towerfield Drive in Woolwell. Opposite Lidl, the shop has easy access and plenty of free parking which saves people from having to struggle down the street with bags and boxes. The front of the building is a traditional store where people can browse for a bargain after delivering their items. However, the ‘open plan’ means donors can also see the rear of the building where volunteers sort the goods into 30 large bays, ready for them to be sent to the most appropriate shop – some shops prefer certain types of clothes, others prefer books or DVDs. The Barnardo’s team consists of manager Gemma Attwood-King, deputy Alison Davis and sales assistants Sabrina Hoque and Amanda Glinn. Gemma said: “This is a fantastic concept which has already proved to be very popular in other parts of the UK, so we are delighted to bring it to Plymouth as well. “We opened our first donation centre in the South West last year, in Gloucester, and in the first 12 months it received 24,000 bags of clothes, books, toys and games. “It makes shopping and donating so much easier for all of our local supporters – there is no need to search for a parking space and then carry everything down the road.” “They simply pull up at the door and transfer everything from their boot, with help at hand if needed.” “Then we sort the stock and arrange distribution to our network of shops where the items are resold to support our work with vulnerable and disadvantaged children.” The donation station is open Monday-Saturday from 9am-6pm, and Sundays from 10am-4pm, and always welcomes donations of good quality items including clothes, books, toys, games, DVDs, CDs, bric-a-brac and accessories. The team is also keen to receive offers of help from potential volunteers just call 01752 696352. 9

News from Dartmoor National Park There is concern over the dramatic crash of the cuckoo population in England, reported to be as high as 70% over the last 25 years or so. The reason for this dramatic decline is unclear. In order to throw some light on the situation, Dartmoor National Park Authority is taking part in a national project managed by the British Trust for Ornithology to track cuckoos by satellite. Cuckoos only spend a short part of the year in the Uk for their breeding season and then migrate to the Sahara region for overwintering. Dartmoor National Park, as southern England’s largest upland, hosts a stable, nationally important population of birds who thrive in its mixed vegetation and grazing environment. In May 2013 four cuckoos were fitted with satellite tags for identification purposes to enable information to be gathered with regard to their long, hazardous migration route. The birds were named Dart, Tor, Ryder & Whortle. The tracking evidence showed that Dart died in Mallorca and Ryder perished while crossing the Sahara desert. However Whortle & Tor successfully reached their overwintering location. The programme is continuing in 2014 and the results will be made available. Land of Granite A new film about Dartmoor National Park and the work of the authority has had a successful premiere. Using local expertise, the narration was by the wildlife presenter, Nick Bake; music was composed by an Authority’s employee, Sarah Oxton, and was performed by students from South Dartmoor Community College from Ashburton. It can be viewed on the Authority’s homepage at: http:/www.dartmoor.gov.uk Bill Hitchins 14
