For over 30 years, Fr. Raymond Portelli, a Gozitan missionary priest and doctor, has been serving communities in Iquitos, Peru, where access to medical care and education remains a daily struggle for many. His mission took an unexpected yet deeply meaningful turn when he found himself at a crossroad between faith and medicine. “I always felt my vocation to become a medical doctor, but when God called me to the priesthood, followed. Yet, the calling to heal never left me, so pursued both,” he shares. Studying medicine for eight years by night while fulfilling his priestly duties by day, he committed himself to a purpose larger than himself.
What began as a small 16-bed clinic has grown into a lifeline for the region, responding to the increasing demand for healthcare in underserved areas. As patient numbers continued to rise, the urgency for an expansion became undeniable. Thanks to the SiGMA Foundation, that expansion is now becoming a reality.

One of his most profound experiences took place in a remote village where a 14-year-old girl was in labour with no midwife in sight. “It was late at night, and I had nothing, no gloves, no medical tools, just my hands. I prayed to all the Saints I knew, and by God’s grace, the baby arrived safely,” he recalls.
These moments serve as reminders of the urgency of accessible healthcare, and why the hospital expansion is not just a project, but a promise; a promise that no person should be denied medical care due to circumstance.

Uma de suas experiências mais marcantes ocorreu em uma vila remota, onde uma jovem de 14 anos entrou em trabalho de parto sem nenhuma parteira por perto. “Era tarde da noite, e eu não tinha nada – sem luvas, sem instrumentos médicos, apenas minhas mãos. Rezei a todos os Santos que conhecia e, pela graça de Deus, o bebê nasceu em segurança”, relembra.
Esses momentos reforçam a necessidade urgente de acesso à saúde. Por isso, a expansão do hospital não é apenas um projeto, mas um compromisso: garantir que ninguém seja privado de atendimento médico por falta de recursos.

Pe. Portelli acredita que a responsabilidade corporativa deve ser um compromisso essencial, e não apenas uma reflexão tardia. “Nem todas as empresas pensam na comunidade, mas as que pensam fazem uma diferença incrível”, afirma.
