Since the year after its founding in 1937, Siena has boasted a men’s basketball team that has captivated audiences in the Capital Region and beyond. In the original glory days of the late 1940s and early 1950s, the then-Indians advanced to the National Catholic Invitational Tournament four straight years, winning the title in Albany in 1950.
The Rev. Maurus Fitzgerald served as the department’s first athletic director, publicizing his vision “that one day Siena would gain the same national fame in basketball that has been achieved in football by Notre Dame.”
Following the success of the early 50s, the program was well on its way, as the Indians found themselves ranked in the AP top-20 in successive seasons, catapulting as high as 11th following an upset of Seton Hall in Albany’s Washington Avenue’s Armory.
Siena Hall of Famer Billy Harrell was a big part of the team’s success in its teenage years, drawing the praise of national publications on his way to being drafted by both the National Basketball Association (Minneapolis Lakers) and Major League Baseball (Cleveland Indians). “The Flash” was a United Press Honorable Mention All-American as a senior in 1952.
Over the next 20 years, the program struggled, winning no more than 14 games in any season. During that time, the Saints played in the longest game in NCAA history, a six-overtime loss to Niagara in 1952-53 (now the second longest). The following year, the player who provided the brightest moments during the “dark years,” Bill Kirsch, a 5-8 guard who was described as a “set-shot artist,” supplied one of the most memorable moments in program history, sinking a 60-foot shot at Madison Square Garden to beat Iona at the buzzer. Sportswriter David Eisenberg described the shot as “the most sensational basketball shot in Madison Square Garden history, a three-quartercourter from 60 feet out.”
In 1972, the former set-shot standout took over as head men’s basketball coach and athletic director. It was under his leadership and through his imagination, that Siena was given Division I status in 1976. After a brief incubation period, the program began to flourish, and has since periodically experienced the national acclaim Fitzgerald dared dream of more than 80 years ago.
Head Coach Mike Deane guided Siena to the promised land of college basketball, the NCAA Tournament, for the first time in 1989—the year after
the program made its initial NIT appear ance. After capturing the nation’s attention throughout the season as a result of a measles outbreak on campus that forced several games (including the North Atlantic Conference Tournament) to be quarantined, Siena knocked off third-seeded (and 13th ranked) Stanford in Greensboro, NC, to become one of the NCAA’s first “Cinderella teams.” “Showbiz” Marc Brown, Siena’s all-time leading scorer with 2,284 career points, keyed the win with a game-high 32 points.
Deane’s teams won 20 or more games four times in his eight years with the program and advanced to the NIT three times, capped off by an unforget table 1994 run. In his final season at the helm, the Saints played well into March, thanks in large part to the efforts of another 2,000-point scorer, Doremus Bennerman. Bennerman went on to earn NIT Most Valuable Player honors after setting the Tournament record with 174 points (including a school-record 51 at Madison Square Garden against Kansas State) as the now-Saints captured third place in the Mecca of college basketball.
After taking a step back following Deane’s departure, a period of time memorable only because of the full-time move to Pepsi Arena prior to the 1996-97 season, the program enjoyed a great renaissance that coincided with the arrival of head coach Paul Hewitt in 1997. Following seventh- and eighth-place finishes in the eight-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in the two years prior to his arrival, the Saints averaged 22 wins in Hewitt’s three seasons at the helm. The run was highlighted by successive postseason appearances in his final two years, the first of

which was a return-trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1999.
Louis Orr continued the success in 2000-01, leading the program to another 20-win season. The following season, the Rob Lanier era began. Lanier became the first coach in program history to orchestrate consecutive postseason appearances in his first two years as head coach. In 2002, the Saints rallied from a sub-par regular season to win four MAAC Tournament games, advancing to the NCAA Opening Round where they became just the second team with a losing record in Tournament history to win a game. Siena knocked off Alcorn State 81-77 in Dayton, Ohio, before succumbing to eventual National Champion Maryland in Washington, D.C., two days later. In Lanier’s second year of work, the Saints won 21 games including two postseason NIT clashes on their home floor.
In 2005, an exciting new chapter in Siena basketball began as Fran McCaffery assumed the reins as head coach. McCaffery made an immediate impact, guiding Siena to the fifth greatest turnaround in all of Division I in his first year, and to a 20-win season and MAAC title game appearance in his second season. In his third season, the Saints enjoyed one of the great years in program history, winning the MAAC Regular-Season and postseason Championship before stunning #4 seed Vanderbilt in the NCAA Tournament First Round.
During the 2008-09 season, McCaffery’s Saints equaled a program record with 27 wins and made another run to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. They won the MAAC RegularSeason and Tournament Champion ship before knocking off Ohio State 74-72 in double overtime in the First Round of the Big Dance. During McCaffery’s final season in 2009-10, the Saints won their third straight MAAC Tournament Title and made a third straight postseason appearance.
Siena made its most recent national postseason appearance in 2014, and secured the program’s first-ever Division I
national postseason tournament championship by capturing the College Basketball Invitational.
On Mar. 25, 2019, Siena brought back one of its own in alumnus Carmen Maciariello ’01 to serve as the 18th head coach in program history. Maciariello has wasted no time in returning the Saints to prominence, piloting the program to at least a share of back-to-back MAAC Regular-Season Championships in his first two seasons at the helm. In just his first season, he guided the Saints back to the promised land, as he led his alma mater to its first MAAC Regular-Season Championship in a decade. Siena was also later awarded the program’s sixth MAAC Tournament Championship, after postseason play was cut short following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
From four Catholic Invitational Tournament appearances, to five National Invitation Tournament bids, to six berths in the NCAA Tourna ment. From the Washington Avenue Armory, to the UHY Center, to the state-of-the-art, 15,500-seat MVP Arena. The scope of Siena Basketball has changed over the program’s 81 seasons, helping to carry through the bold ideals set forth that many years ago by Rev. Fitzgerald.

Carmen Maciariello
In his first three seasons at the helm, Siena Men’s Basketball alumnus Carmen Maciariello ’01 has restored his alma mater to prominence. The native of nearby Clifton Park, New York has directed the Saints to three straight winning seasons, highlighted by at least a share of a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Regular-Season Championships, and the awarding of an outright MAAC Tournament Championship in his first year. Additionally, Maciariello has developed a pair of different MAAC Player of the Year honorees, with Jalen Pickett (2019-20) and Manny Camper (2020-21) each earning acclaim.
The 44-year-old Maciariello, who was rewarded for his success with a three-year contract extension on Mar. 26, 2021, which runs through the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, has achieved a stellar 47-29 (.618) overall record including a 39-17 (.696) mark in MAAC action. His 39 wins through his first 56 MAAC Regular-Season games coached, trail only Siena Athletics Hall of Famer Mike Deane (40) for the most in program history, and are tied with former Iona coach Jeff Ruland and Saint Peter’s coach Ted Fiore for the sixth best start in the league’s 42-year history.
“I want to thank Dr. Gibson, John D’Argenio, and all the amazing people I get to work with on a daily basis here at Siena College,” Maciariello said upon signing his contract extension last spring. “I am thankful for the belief that the College and administration has shown in our program, and I’m excited for the many years to come.”
Maciariello was promoted to be the 18th head coach in Siena Men’s Basketball history on Mar. 25, 2019, after having served the previous 2018-19 season as an assistant coach in his second stint with the program. He first entered the collegiate ranks as Siena’s director of basketball operations during the 2005-06 season, serving on the staff of Siena Athletics Hall of Famer Fran McCaffery.
“We are pleased with the success Carm and the team have achieved the past two seasons,” said Siena College Vice President and Director of Athletics John D’Argenio upon Maciariello’s contract extension. “We’re excited to see the program continue to improve and compete for MAAC championships, while continuing to do so in a way that aligns with Siena’s Franciscan values.
Maciariello piloted the Saints to a third straight winning season last winter. Despite returning only three scholarship players from the year prior — and being ranked tied for fourth nationally for the most newcomers (11) — Siena went 7-3 in the month of February to finish with a 15-14 overall record and a third consecu tive top-three MAAC finish under Maciariello with a 12-8 league mark.
Maciariello guided Siena to a share of its second straight MAAC Regular-Season Championship in as many years, successfully navigating the Saints through an unprecedented 2020-21 season wrought by the challenges faced from the coronavirus pandemic. Siena overcame four separate in-season COVID-19 pauses and, despite being the second-to-last Division I team to tip-off its season on Jan. 3, persevered to post a 12-5 overall record, including a 12-4 ledger, in the MAAC. Maciariello piloted the Saints to a program-record-tying 16-game win streak bridging his first two seasons, which included a programrecord eight straight true road wins. For his efforts, he was named one of 25 Division I finalists for both the Hugh Durham (top Division I mid-major coach) and Skip Prosser Man of the Year awards.
Maciariello achieved an unprecedented first season leading the Saints in 2019-20. Siena posted a 20-10 overall record including a stellar 15-5 record in the MAAC, culminating with the program’s eighth MAAC Regular-Season
Championship while also being awarded its sixth MAAC Tournament Title. The only one of the 61 new Division I head coaching hires during the 2019-20 season to lead his team to an outright conference regular-season champion ship, Maciariello was named one of the “Top-12 Most Immediately Successful Hires of the 2019-20 Season” by CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander. Maciariello became the first
upon Maciariello’s hiring. “In addition to being an excellent basketball coach with a proven track record, his passion for Siena College and our student athletes is inspiring. He carries a deep understanding and commitment to the Siena mission, the community, and this special program that will serve him well. I share his vision of championship basketball, develop ing and graduating student athletes, and leading the way in the Capital Region. I know our fans join me in welcoming back a son of Siena to this key position at this key moment in our history.”
Siena restored home-court dominance under Maciariello’s leadership, posting a perfect 14-0 mark at MVP Arena (formally the Times Union Center) during the 2019-20 season, as the Saints were one of just 13 teams nationally to secure an undefeated home record. Maciariello brought back excitement to the Capital Region community and, in turn, the fans showed their outstanding support as the Saints boasted the top average attendance among all 56 Northeast mid-major programs. Siena’s average attendance of 6,228 ranked 83rd overall nationally — the program’s highest standing in five years — and 12th in the country among the 263 mid-major programs, which served as a seven-spot increase from the year prior. Maciariello’s Saints have reached equal heights in the classroom, as Siena was bestowed with the program’s first-ever NABC Team Academic Excellence Award for achieving a 3.0 or better team grade-point average for the 2019-20 season. The Saints achieved a 3.05 team GPA during the spring semester to raise the overall cumulative team GPA to an even 3.0.
“Saints Don’t Sit on the Sidelines,” and Maciariello has taken an active approach in giving back to his local Capital Region community and beyond. The Saints participated

in more than 50 community service activities locally throughout the 2019-20 season, including delivering food and vital supplies to Capital Region first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic, organizing the second annual Autism Awareness and Sensory Friendly Game, and volunteering to assist Capital Region youth through the Ronald McDonald House, Make-A-Wish, Play It Foreward 518, Troy Boys and Girls Club, and the CAPTAIN Cares program, just to name a few. Following the conclusion of the season, the Saints were presented with the 2020 Autism Action Award by New York State Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara for the team’s success with the Autism Awareness and Sensory Friendly game.
Maciariello also spearheaded the creation of Coaches 4 Change, an organization that engages, educates, empowers, and evolves the collegiate student athlete on the issues of social injustices, systemic racism, and the power of voting, in the endless pursuit of equality.
Maciariello returned to his alma mater for his second stint on staff in 2018-19, serving as an assistant coach who helped guide Siena to a 17-16 overall record, including an 11-7 mark in the MAAC. The Saints’ 17 wins tied for the most of any MAAC team, and the squad’s nine-win improvement was tied for the 11th best turnaround nationally. Siena finished in a tie for second place in the MAAC — placing nine spots higher than their preseason poll prediction — which tied UT Arlington for the largest improvement nationally.
Maciariello served as the coordinator for a Siena defense during the 2018-19 season which ranked 42nd nationally, allowing 66.0 points per game, the third best mark during the program’s 43-year Division I era. Maciariello’s defense held the opposition to 70 points or fewer for 15 straight games, marking the program’s longest such streak in 26 years.
Maciariello first entered the collegiate ranks as Siena’s director of basketball operations during the 2005-06 season under the direction of 2017 Siena Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Fran McCaffery. In Maciariello’s lone season with McCaffery, the Saints posted a nine-win improvement, helping lay the groundwork for the greatest three-year run in Siena Basketball history which yielded a trio of MAAC Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances from 2008-10.
Maciariello graduated cum laude with a marketing and management degree from Siena in 2001. He helped guide the Saints to 20 wins and a share of the MAAC Regular-Season Championship during his senior season, after having sat out the previous year per NCAA transfer regulations following his matriculation from the University of New Hampshire. In his lone season playing for Siena, he appeared in 31 games (one start) and averaged 3.5 points and 1.6 rebounds spanning 11.3 minutes of action. Maciariello played three seasons for the Wildcats, where he was tabbed the team’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1998, and was a team captain during his junior season in 1998-99.
Maciariello spent 11 seasons as a Division I assistant coach, which included stops at Siena (2018-19), George Washington (2014-18), Boston University (2011-14), and Fairfield (2008-11).
Maciariello’s teams made seven national postseason tournament appearances, while averaging 20.5 wins and a .624 winning percentage. He also helped guide his programs to a 124-70 (.639) conference mark and, including his time as an undergraduate at Siena, won a conference regular-season or postseason title at each school.
George Washington amassed 87 wins and made three national postseason tournament appearances over Maciariello’s four seasons with the program. The Colonials captured the 2016 NIT Championship and won a programrecord 28 games.
Maciariello assisted Boston University to 57 victories, including a 38-12 (.760) league record, over his three seasons working under head coach Joe Jones. BU made a pair of national postseason tournament appearances during his tenure, punctuated by a NIT berth in 2013-14 when the Terriers achieved a 24-11 overall record and the program’s first Patriot League Regular-Season Championship with a 15-3 conference mark.
Maciariello helped guide Fairfield to a 65-34 (.657) overall record and a 37-17 (.685) mark in the MAAC in three seasons on Ed Cooley’s staff. The Stags made a pair of national postseason tournament appearances during his tenure, highlighted by a school-record 25 wins, MAAC Regular-Season Championship, and NIT Second Round appearance in 2011.
Maciariello first entered the coaching ranks with a two-year stint as vice president and head coach of the Albany City Rocks AAU program, where he coached a number of future Division I players and professional stars including Siena legend Edwin Ubiles, Jimmer Fredette, Mark Lyons, and Talor Battle.
Following his collegiate playing career, Maciariello received Italian citizenship and played four professional seasons in Italy. He first signed with Bignami Castel Maggiore before playing with GS Basket Massafra, where he averaged 30 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Maciariello concluded his professional career in the League Due with Virtus Rigusa and Cimberio Novara in Sicily.
Maciariello was inducted into the Capital District Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. A 1996 graduate of Shenendehowa High School, he was named the Albany Times Union Player of the Year after guiding the Plainsmen to a 22-2 overall record and Section II Championship. Maciariello and his wife, Laura, are the proud parents of a 5-year-old daughter, Reese, and a 2-year-old son, Matteo.

Bobby Castagna
Veteran NBA scout and collegiate basketball coach and administrator Bobby Castagna joined the Siena Men’s Basketball staff as an assistant coach in May 2021. The Brooklyn, New York native has spent more than four decades at both the collegiate and professional athletics levels, including 19 years as an NBA scout with the Utah Jazz.
“It is such an honor that I am able to announce the addition of Coach Bobby Castagna to our coaching staff,” said head coach Carmen Maciariello upon Castagna’s appointment. “He is a tremendous teacher who builds lifelong relation ships with the student athletes who he mentors, not only in the game of basketball, but in life, with myself and Andy Cavo ’02 being two prime examples. I cannot wait to welcome Coach C and his wife Kim to Loudonville.”
Castagna helped guide Siena to a 15-14 overall record, including a third-place MAAC finish with a 12-8 league mark, in his first season on staff. Despite returning only three scholarship players from the year prior — and being ranked tied for fourth nationally for the most newcomers (11) — Siena went 7-3 in the month of February to finish strong down the stretch.
In addition to his nearly two decades serving in the scouting department for the Jazz, Castagna also previously spent 14 years as a Division I assistant coach and 11 years as a Division I athletics administrator. He began his collegiate career as both a head and assistant coach at the junior college level following a three-year stint as a high school coach.
“First and foremost, I’d like to thank the Utah Jazz for giving me the opportunity to work for them for the past 19 years,” explained Castagna upon his hiring. “The Jazz are a great organization with first-class people in it. I’m leaving a job that I’ve loved for nearly two decades, but this was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. Carmen is family. I’ve mentored him for 25 years, and I look forward to continuing that mentorship while helping him, the staff, and the players achieve their goals. I’m a teacher above all else, and I can’t wait to get started working with our players.”
Castagna joined the Saints after having worked in the scouting department for the Utah Jazz since 2002. He was their West Coast Regional scout on a part-time basis from 2002-10, while concurrently serving as the Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of California, Santa Barbara during those eight years. After retiring from UCSB in 2010, Castagna continued as the Utah Jazz West Coast Regional Scout on a full-time basis.
As the Senior Associate Athletic Director at UCSB, Castagna supervised nine sports and was heavily involved in the department’s facilities projects, including oversee ing the construction of the new athletic department facility. He previously served as the Director of Intramurals and Assistant Director of Recreation from 1999-02.
Castagna first joined UCSB as an assistant coach from 1989-96, helping guide the Gauchos to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament in 1990 and a pair of NIT appear ances (1992, 1993), while recruiting All-Big West selections Raymond Tutt (Big West Player of the Year), B.J. Bunton, Lelan McDougal, and Josh Merrill. During his time in Southern California, he also spent 11 years as the director of the Los Angeles Lakers Basketball Camps (1999-10).
In addition to UCSB, Castagna has served as a Division I assistant coach at New Hampshire (1996-99), Baylor (1988-89), and Fresno State (1985-88). He recruited future Saints Maciariello and Cavo to UNH, and both coached and mentored current Utah Jazz Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Dennis Lindsey, at Baylor.
Castagna began his collegiate coaching career spending seven years at the junior college level. After serving as an assistant coach at Los Angeles Valley College (1979-81) and Los Angeles Mission College (1977-79), he spent three years as the head coach at LAVC (1982-85). Castagna led Los Angeles Valley College to back-to-back 20-win seasons, earning him 1983-84 Mountain Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors. He guided LAVC to the 1983-84 MVC Championship, while coaching two-time Junior College All-American Larry Middleton. Castagna first began coaching as the assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Chatsworth (CA) High School
Castagna is a 1975 graduate of California State University, Northridge, with his B.A. in Physical Education. He was a member of the CSUN basketball team, where he started his senior year.
“Coach Castagna’s knowledge of the game is vast, and his relationship-building skills are second to none,” added Maciariello. “He will be a tremendous asset in all phases of our program. It’s a great day to be a Saint!”

Darius Theus
Siena Men’s Basketball Head Coach Carmen Maciariello announced the hiring of Darius Theus as an assistant coach on May 31, 2022. A key member of the magical 2011 VCU Final Four squad, Theus joins the Saints after spending the past four seasons as the Director of Player Development at his alma mater.
“I’m excited to add Darius Theus to our staff,” said Maciariello upon Theus’ appointment. “Bottom line, he’s a winner. He will be integral in our success both on and off the court, and a welcome addition to our staff.”
A proven winner, Theus’ teams have averaged 24 wins while posting a 240-99 (.708) overall record including a 120-54 (.690) conference mark, and have earned seven NCAA Tournament berths spanning his 10 seasons as both a student athlete and coaching staff member at the Division I level. Following a standout playing career at VCU (2009-13), Theus played professionally in Europe for three years (2013-16) before returning to the States to serve on the coaching staffs of the Rams (2016-17, 2018-22) and the University of Texas (2017-18).
“I’m very excited to join Coach Carm’s staff,” remarked Theus upon his hiring. “I’m extremely thankful for the opportunity, and am excited to get to work. I’m looking forward to helping our program achieve great success.”
A rising star, Theus, 31, joins Maciariello’s staff after spending the past four seasons as the Director of Player Development under head coach Mike Rhoades at his alma mater, Virginia Commonwealth University (2018-22). VCU amassed an 84-38 (.689) overall record, including a 48-20 (.706) mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while earning a pair of NCAA Tournament berths, an NIT appearance, and an A-10 Regular-Season Champion ship during Theus’ four-year stint. The Rams achieved a 22-10 record this past season including a 14-4 ledger in the A-10, while advancing to the Second Round of the NIT. Theus spent the 2017-18 season at Texas, where he was the Director of Player Development under head coach Shaka Smart. The Longhorns won 19 games in Theus’
Derek Brooks
Siena Men’s Basketball Head Coach Carmen Maciariello announced the appointment of Derek Brooks as the program’s new director of operations on May 9, 2022. A seven-year collegiate coaching veteran, Brooks arrives at Siena after spending the past four seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
“I am excited to welcome Derek and his family to Loudonville,” said Maciariello upon Brooks’ hiring. “He has impeccable character, and comes from a coach I greatly respect in Rob Pryor. He knows the task at hand requires forward thinking and attention to detail, and I know that he can’t wait to get started.”
Brooks brings seven years of coaching experience in the collegiate ranks with him to Loudonville. Prior to his four-year stint at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (2018-22), he spent three seasons as a women’s basketball assistant coach at his alma mater, the United States Air Force Academy (2014-17). Brooks has also previously coached at both the high school and AAU levels.
“I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to serve as the director of men’s basketball operations at Siena College,” stated Brooks upon his appointment. “I want to thank Coach Maciariello for this opportunity to join his staff. My family and I are excited to be a part of the Siena community!”
Brooks joins the Saints after spending the past four seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Division III USMMA, where he served under former Siena assistant Rob Pryor who was on Fran McCaffery’s 2006-07 staff. The Mariners posted a 15-10 overall record this past season, including a 12-4 mark in the Skyline Conference, earning a bid to the ECAC Tournament.
lone season in Austin, while earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Theus first joined the collegiate coaching ranks when he returned to VCU to serve in a similar role as the Director of Student Athlete Development for the 2016-17 season. The Rams posted a 26-9 overall record and were 14-4 in the A-10 while receiving an NCAA Tournament berth that year.
Theus starred at point guard for VCU, where he helped lead the Rams to three NCAA Tournament appearances – highlighted by an historic 2011 Final Four run – and a 2010 College Basketball Invitational Championship. The first official signee for Shaka Smart and his staff upon their arrival at VCU, Theus was named the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Most Outstanding Player and a Third Team All-CAA selection following his junior season, and capped his brilliant career by earning Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team honors at the conclusion of his senior year in 2012-13. He appeared in 146 career games (75 starts) for VCU, and ranks tied for third all-time in program history in steals (237) and eighth in assists (462). The Rams amassed a stellar 111-37 (.750) overall record during Theus’ four seasons on the court.
Following his decorated collegiate playing career, Theus played professionally in Europe for three years for Aris Leeuwarden (2013-14) in The Netherlands, and SC Rasta Vechta (2015) and the Nurnberg Falcons (2015-16) both in Germany’s ProA League. During his one season at Aris Leeuwarden, Theus was named the Dutch Basketball League Statistical Player of the Year, an All-Defensive Team selection, and a DBL All-Star after leading the league in scoring (16.9), steals (3.1), and field-goal percentage.
A native of Portsmouth, Virginia, Theus earned his B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013. Theus and his wife, Ladonna, are the proud parents to daughter Laila, 8, and son Emory, 1.
Brooks began his collegiate coaching career with a three-year stint as a women’s basketball assistant at Air Force, where he was also the intercollegiate program manager. He was responsible for managing the Falcons’ recruiting, planning, and training, while also handling the team’s budget and producing scouting reports. A 2011 Air Force graduate who rose to the level of Captain in the United States Air Force, Brooks began his professional career as a financial management officer at Hanscom Air Force Base from 2011-14. During his time in Massachusetts, he served as the head coach of the Middlesex Magic AAU program’s U-17, U-14, and U-11 teams from 2012-14, and was also the assistant varsity basketball coach at Thayer Academy for the 2011-12 season.
Brooks earned his bachelor’s degree in social sciences from Air Force, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Falcons (2007-11). He averaged 10 points and five rebounds while shooting 49% from the field and 43% from three-point range, while captaining the 2010-11 squad to a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Following his senior season, he earned the highest honor an Air Force Men’s Basketball player can achieve, receiving the Bob Spear Award which is presented to the student athlete who is outstanding in all areas of the Academy — academics, athletics, and military performance.
Following graduation, Brooks was a member of the bronze-medal-winning 2011 All-Armed Forces team at the International SHAPE Tournament in Mons, Belgium. He also competed for the 2012 All-Air Force team which won the gold medal at the 2012 Armed Forces Championships.
A native of Nathalie, Virginia, Brooks and his wife, Lauren, are the proud parents of daughter, Savannah, and son, Dylan.

Jonathan Pickett
“I’m excited to welcome Jonathan Pickett to our Siena Basketball family,” said Maciariello upon Pickett’s appointment. “He is a tireless worker with deep roots in the Capital Region community. Jonathan is constantly trying to do all he can to help our program improve on a daily basis.”
In Pickett’s first season on staff, Siena achieved a 15-14 overall record and finished third in the MAAC with a 12-8 league mark. Despite returning only three scholarship players from the year prior — and being ranked tied for fourth nationally for the most newcomers (11) — Siena went 7-3 in the month of February to finish strong down the stretch.
Pickett joined the Saints after spending the 2020-21 season as the Director of Analytics for the University at Albany Men’s Basketball team. In this role, he created analytic-driven reports aimed at aiding the coaching staff with scouting reports and internal player development. Pickett also developed a shot-tracking system, assisted in player development, and supervised and evaluated student managers.
“I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to stay home and continue to grow in my career under Coach Maciariello,” noted Pickett upon his hiring. “Siena Basketball holds a special place in the Capital Region, and I’m honored to join such a storied program.”
As an undergraduate, Pickett served as the head student manager for the Great Danes for each of his final two seasons. He was the head manager and assistant to the video coordinator for the UAlbany Women’s Basketball program during his two years as
Pickett is a 2020 graduate of UAlbany with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Business Administration – Financial Management.

GENERAL
Evan Franz, an 18-year-old from nearby Brunswick, New York who is battling brain cancer, was officially introduced and added to the 2021-22 Siena Men’s Basketball roster as an honorary team member on Nov. 11, 2021.
“Evan is a resilient and strong young man who personifies how we live here at Siena,” explained head coach Carmen Maciariello. “He is enthusiastic about life, and appreciative of all his blessings. His toughness speaks for itself with his ongoing battle. We are thankful he’s a part of our family.”
Maciariello and the Saints first met Evan through Play It Foreward 518, a local non-profit organization run by former team manager Joe Watroba ‘13 and his family, which raises money and awareness to support local children and their families facing illness and hardship. At Siena Men’s Basketball home games each year the Saints, in conjunction with Play It Foreward 518, welcome a patient from the Melodies Center to serve as an honorary captain. Evan previously served as an honorary captain through the program, and the Saints surprised him at his birthday party. An avid Siena Basketball fan, Evan has continued to attend games as well as many team practices.
Evan was diagnosed with Stage 4 glioblastoma multiforme in May 2019 which required immediate brain surgery. The location of his tumor impacted his speech and mobility,
and the right side of his body no longer functioned properly. Evan spent two weeks at the Albany Medical Center, before being transferred to Sunnyview Rehabilitation where he received speech, occupational, and physical therapy five times per week, learning how to walk and talk again while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation all at the same time.
Evan plans to be at as many Siena Men’s Basketball home games as possible, and will be seated directly behind the bench where he will continue to vociferously cheer on his Saints.

With 11 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) is in its 42nd year of competition during the 2022-23 academic year.
The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College, and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of Men’s Cross Country and Men’s Soccer. On Jan. 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC Men’s Basketball game and the MAAC story had begun.
Current Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona University, Manhattan College, Marist College, Mount St. Mary’s University, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s University, and Siena College. The MAAC supports 24 sports and championships during the 2022-23 academic year; in addition, the MAAC champion earns automatic qualification to the NCAA Championship in 15 sports.
On June 1, 2018, the MAAC announced that the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ was selected to host the 2020-22 MAAC Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championships. The MAAC Council of Presidents unanimously accepted the facility’s bid to host the championships at their May 30th meeting in New York City.
In 2022, the MAAC returned to Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, successfully completing the championships with no COVID limitations for the first time since moving to Atlantic City. Saint Peter’s men and Fairfield women captured the championship trophies and moved on to the NCAA March Madness field of 68. Saint Peter’s would go on to become Cinderella of the tournament, making MAAC and NCAA history along the way. A No. 15 seed, Saint Peter’s became the first MAAC program (men or women) to advance to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, defeating No. 2 Kentucky (85-79 OT), No. 7 Murray St. (70-60), and No. 3 Purdue (67-64). The Peacocks were also the first-ever 15-seed in NCAA history to advance to the Elite Eight.
By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, and a top reputation for hosting events, the MAAC has been awarded several future NCAA Championships. Alongside Canisius and Niagara, the MAAC successfully hosted the 2022 Men’s Basketball First & Second Rounds at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, NY. The MAAC and Siena College will host the 2023 Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds and the 2024 Women’s Basketball Regionals at the MVP Arena in Albany, NY. The MAAC, alongside the Ivy League, was also selected to host the 2025 Women’s Rowing Championship Finals (Divisions I, II, and III) at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, NJ. In 2026, the MAAC, along with Canisius College and Niagara University, will host the Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, NY.
ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS
The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona Women’s Rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership.
MAAC student athletes continue to excel in the classroom at high rates. Following a one-year hiatus, the NCAA announced the latest four-year Academic Progress Rates (APR), and 41 MAAC teams achieved perfect APR scores (1,000) – 30 women’s and 11 men’s – while 10 league sports saw an increase in their average rate since the last annual report was announced in May 2020. Siena College led all MAAC institutions with six teams earning a perfect mark.
First-class facilities are the standard within the MAAC, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, Barclays Center, Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, MassMutual Center, KeyBank Center, MVP Arena (formerly Times Union Center), Webster Bank Arena, Mohegan Sun Arena, and Sun National Bank Center. In October of 2022, the MAAC announced three-year partnerships with Clover Stadium for the MAAC Baseball Championship and SPIRE Academy for the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships. The Clover Stadium agreement made Pomona, NY the home of the 2023, 2024, and 2025 MAAC Baseball Championships. The SPIRE partnership made Geneva, Ohio the host site for the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships for 2024, 2025, and 2026.
Several MAAC schools have enjoyed success in national postseason play. Saint Peter’s Men’s Basketball made March Madness history in 2022 when they became
the first-ever 15-seed and MAAC Men’s Basketball program to reach the Elite Eight. The Peacocks defeated second-seeded Kentucky, seventh-seeded Murray State, and third-seeded Purdue on their historic run.
In 2018, Quinnipiac Women’s Basketball picked up its third NCAA Tournament win in the previous two years. The Bobcats defeated Miami in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 1 UConn in the Second Round. In 2017, Quinnipiac won its first NCAA Championship game in program history and became the first MAAC women’s basketball program to advance to the Sweet 16 since Marist in 2007. The Bobcats defeated Marquette and Miami en route to their Sweet 16 appearance against South Carolina. In 2015, Siena’s Women’s Basketball team became the first MAAC Women’s Basketball program to make it to a postseason championship game. The Saints advanced all the way to the title contest of the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) where Siena fell to Louisiana-Lafayette. In 2007, the Marist Women’s Basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, Tennessee. The Red Foxes have recorded an additional five NCAA wins since their run in 2007.
The Saint Peter’s Men’s Basketball team claimed the 2017 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) title, to become the first MAAC program to win a national postseason championship since Siena’s Men’s Basketball team in 2014. The Saints earned the league’s first basketball postseason championship in its history by winning the 2014 College Basketball Invitational (CBI).
In baseball in 2021, the MAAC received its first at-large selection to an NCAA regional in conference history when Fairfield earned the third-seed in the Austin Regional. The Stags made it all the way to the Austin Regional Final, defeating fourth-seeded Southern and second-seeded Arizona State. Fairfield began the regular season 28-0 in conference play and finished 39-5 overall.
LEADER IN INNOVATION
The MAAC Council of Presidents approved bylaws to launch an Esports League and Championships in 2020. The presidents approved Esports as an official MAAC co-ed club sport. The decision came after two years of evaluation and co-sponsorship of events with the ECAC, including the highly successful HV Gamer Con 2019 in Albany, NY. In 2022, the MAAC held its first in-person Esports Championships at the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City. Team champions were Iona (Rocket League), Marist (Overwatch and League of Legends), and Quinnipiac (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate). Marist was named 2022 Program of the Year. Esports returns to the Showboat Hotel in 2023 as the sports continues to grow at member schools.
The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the acclaim of the league into cyberspace. In 2017, the league reached a conferencewide agreement with SIDEARM Sports (extended in 2020), to design and host the MAAC web page. MAACSports.com has been a great success, providing fans with fresh content, up-to-date results, live and on-demand video, and an online merchandise store. The site was redesigned in the fall of 2021.
In May 2014, the MAAC continued to grow its partnership with ESPN by announcing the launch of the MAAC Branded ESPN+/3 Channel. All MAAC- and school-produced digital contact can be viewed through this channel. In the 2017-18 academic year, the MAAC entered into a new eight-year agreement with ESPN and produced a total of 325 events on the ESPN family of networks.
The first MAAC events on ESPN+ were Men’s & Women’s Lacrosse games produced by Monmouth University. The 2018 Baseball Championship was the first MAAC championship to air entirely on ESPN+. As a part of the current MAAC-ESPN partnership, ESPN+ will become home to hundreds of MAAC games, championships, and shows that are easily accessible to MAAC fans throughout the country.
Under the ESPN agreement, 2019-20 marked the first year that all MAAC institutions will have school production facilities and by the end of 2024-25 the conference and schools will produce more than 700 collegiate athletic events and shows on the ESPN family of networks.

A SIENA EDUCATION IS AN EDUCATION WITH SOUL.
Located in Loudonville, New York — just 10 minutes from the state capital of Albany — the Siena experience is built for a new generation of leaders eager to create a more just, peaceful and humane world. It empowers them through a transformative journey of intellectual, spiritual and personal discovery.
At Siena, education isn’t something you get, it’s something you get to do. With 40 majors, 80-plus minors and certificates, and prestigious joint degree programs in liberal arts, science and business, Saints have more than 1,200 unique ways to reach their personal and professional goals. But that’s just the beginning.
Our 3,000 Saints engage personally with top scholars in a dynamic, customized learning environment. From internships to research to service, they get real-world experience now, not later. The result: sought after graduates prepared to succeed in an ever-changing global society.
Hundreds of student life options ranging from Habitat for Humanity to Gaming Club join with Siena’s 21-sport Division I athletic program to provide students the opportunity to get in the game, whatever their interests may be. Extensive study-abroad programs and immersive service-learning allow for discovery and reflection.
Saints are challenged ethically and morally to go beyond asking what, and how to better understand why. They push outside their comfort zone to explore different perspectives and new possibilities, and work closely with their professors (12:1 student-faculty ratio), taking advantage of state-of-theart resources and one-on-one research opportunities in all fields. A Siena education is strengthened through a robust internship program that includes top startup companies, nonprofits and government organizations that drive this region’s growth.

The Saints Alive! Athletics Fund is vital to the success of Siena’s intercollegiate athletic program.
In the effort to compete both financially and athletically with schools in our conference and across the country, we must increase outside funding.
