SIENA COLLEGE ATHLETICS 2016-17 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends,

Siena Athletics experienced a transformative year in 2016-17 as great progress was made toward building our future both through the creation and enhancement of facilities to better serve our student athletes and coaches, as well as successes and progress from a number of our teams.

The $13.5 million multi-phase project to renovate and enhance both the Alumni Recreation Center and Marcelle Athletic Complex kicked into full gear this past year.

Phases 1A and 1B – featuring the creation of a men’s and women’s basketball practice court, enhancements to the ARC competition court, and the construction of new baseball and softball hitting cages – was completed during the past year. As we enter the 2017-18 school year, construction is nearly complete on our new strength and conditioning and sports medicine suites, as well as a new ARC event entrance. The final phase, which features an 8,725 square-foot, two-story fitness center, is set for completion next fall.

On the field, the men’s golf, women’s soccer, women’s tennis, and softball teams all achieved second-place finishes. It was an especially historic year for women’s tennis, which became the first team in Siena Athletics’ history to begin a season with 15 consecutive victories.

March Madness was at a fever pitch as both basketball teams had noteworthy finishes to their seasons. The men won 13 of their final 19 games and electrified the Times Union Center with a trip to the MAAC Championship Game. The women’s team was also victorious in 12 of their final 19 contests and won 13 MAAC games to equal the program’s most conference triumphs in 14 years. Additionally, for the 20th straight year, the men’s program was ranked in the top-100 nationally in average attendance, and for the 10th consecutive season averaged over 6,000 fans per game at the TUC.

The 2016-17 school year was the department’s most successful in money raised through corporate sales and Saints Alive! donations. Following an 11% increase in corporate sales in the first year of our new partnership with Van Wagner Sports and Entertainment in 2015-16, VWSE brought in a new record of $741,735 last year to mark a 21% spike. I am pleased to report that we also exceeded our annual fundraising goal. The Saints Alive! Athletic Fund raised a new record $623,756 which was nearly a 10% increase from the previous year.

A NEW HOME FOR SIENA ATHLETICS

Senior Scott Kim was named the MAAC Golfer of the Month for September and the conference’s Golfer of the Week in late March. Off the course, he was tabbed a Top-20 semifinalist for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award, and the national sport winner in men’s golf.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (17-17, 12-8 MAAC)

Finished strong, winning 13 of final 19 games to advance to the MAAC Championship Game while playing the 32nd toughest non-conference schedule in the nation and 82nd hardest overall

Overcame 17-point deficit with 17 minutes remaining to oust twotime defending regular-season champion Monmouth in the MAAC Semifinals. Sophomore guard Nico Clareth came off the bench to score 27 of Siena’s 64 second-half points.

SOFTBALL (21-30, 14-6 MAAC)

Led by a veteran nucleus which was one of just two Division I teams (National Champion North Carolina) to feature four 1,000-point scorers.

The Saints’ five-member senior class finished with 5,787 career points.

Set program record with 14 league victories to finish second in the MAAC after being projected to finish eighth

Posted seventh consecutive 20-win season - and just the eighth in program history - while also earning a fourth MAAC Tournament appearance in five seasons

Red-shirt senior forward Brett Bisping was named an NABC District I Second Team, Second Team All-MAAC, and MAAC All-Tournament Team selection, and graduated as the only player in program history to eclipse both 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds for his career

BASEBALL (20-28-2, 11-13 MAAC) Youthful squad – which was comprised of 22 freshmen and sophomores – tied for program’s most true road wins (16) in 12 years

Boasted conference-high and program-record-tying three First Team All-MAAC selections in senior Dan Swain and juniors Jordan Bishop and Joe Drpich

Swain wrapped up a brilliant career by finishing in the top-10 in program history in nearly every major offensive category. He was selected in the 34th Round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (14-16, 13-7 MAAC) Won 11 of final 15 games and finished with 13 MAAC victories to equal the program’s most conference triumphs in 14 years

Reeled off six consecutive wins midway through the season to tie for the program’s longest winning streak in 14 years

Sophomore guard Jackie Benitez was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-MAAC selection, while junior guard Kollyns Scarbrough was heralded as a Second Team AllMAAC honoree. Benitez and Scarbrough each recorded a 34-point performance which tied for the program’s highest individual scoring output in 26 years.

Both the men’s and women’s teams won races during the fall cross country season. Men’s cross country tied for the program’s best MAAC Championship finish for the second straight season.

Freshman Evans Kibet was named the 2016-17 Siena College Male Rookie of the Year.

He was awarded Siena’s first male MAAC Runner of the Week honor in seven years, and later became the program’s firstever All-MAAC selection.

Sophomore Sarah Forman was named an All-Conference selection in cross country, and captured both the 1500-meter MAAC Outdoor Championship and the 3000-meter MAAC Indoor Title

2016-17 TEAM RECAPS MEN’S LACROSSE (3-11, 3-3 MAAC) Finished the season strong by winning three of their final four games, highlighted by a Senior Day victory over defending MAAC Champion Quinnipiac Junior attack Chris Robertson was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, and senior defenseman Joe Arcarese was heralded as the program’s first-ever MAAC Long Stick Midfielder of the Year. Robertson became the 27th member of the program’s 100-Point Club in the Saints’ season finale.

Senior defenseman Ryan Ghaderi was named the men’s lacrosse national team winner for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award

SIENA COLLEGE MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR JOE DRPICH – Baseball Became just the third player in program history to earn ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-Region honors

First Team All-MAAC selection and an ECAC First Team All-Star

Led the MAAC with a whopping .577 slugging percentage and ranked second in both home runs (10) and RBI (46), was tied for third in total bases (105), and stood fifth in average (.346)

In 24 MAAC contests, led the league in average (.419), hits (39), total bases (67), and slugging percentage (.720), while ranking second in both home runs (six) and RBI (29) Recorded both a 20-game on-base streak and a 14-game hitting streak

FIELD HOCKEY (3-11, 2-4 MAAC) Scored a Division I record six goals in league victory over LIU Brooklyn en route to finishing with the program’s most goals scored in a season in seven years

Sophomore defender Jaycie St. John and freshman goalkeeper Mary Crumlish were named Second Team All-MAAC selections.

Crumlish ranked third nationally averaging 9.43 saves per game.

Crumlish represented the STX Select 2017 US U-19 Junior National Team, and sophomore forward Fariyah Omarshah competed for her native Zimbabwean National Team at the Hockey Junior World Cup

MEN’S SOCCER (8-8-5, 6-3-1 MAAC) The Saints went unbeaten in 10 of their final 13 matches and recorded the program’s highest league finish (third) in five seasons.

Siena was ranked 21st nationally in the first TopDrawerSoccer Top-25 Poll of the regular season on Aug. 30, following an impressive season-opening win over LIU Brooklyn.

Earned program’s first-ever postseason home match, and defeated Monmouth in penalties to advance to the MAAC Semifinals for the second consecutive season

Five Saints earned All-MAAC honors, highlighted by a program-record-tying three All-Rookie Team honorees including unanimous selection Conor McGlynn.

McGlynn ranked tied for second in the MAAC and 25th nationally with eight assists.

SIENA COLLEGE FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR TARA SOBIERAJSKI – Women’s Soccer Earned Female Student Athlete of the Year honors for second time in a row

First-ever three-time First Team All-MAAC selection in program history was heralded as the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year

Named an ECAC First Team All-Star and a MAAC All-Tournament Team selection

Center back tied for fourth overall in the MAAC with eight assists, and broke program’s all-time career assists record with 23

Quarterbacked a defense which ranked second in the MAAC in goals against average (0.96) to help the Saints tie both the program’s bestever conference finish (second) and most conference wins (seven)

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL (16-13, 12-6 MAAC) Won seven of their final nine matches, including a MAAC Quarterfinals sweep of fourth-seeded Rider

Senior outside hitter Briana Flagg was named a First Team All-MAAC selection and senior libero Kalehua Katagiri earned Second Team All-MAAC honors

Katagiri was tabbed a two-time MAAC Libero of the Week and ranked 16th nationally averaging 5.20 digs per set

WOMEN’S GOLF (MAAC Championships – Fifth) Senior Kristen Bromley and sophomore Sara Riso both carded top-five finishes at the MAAC Championships. Bromley finished in the top-10 during all four career MAAC Championships appearances, capped by three consecutive third-place finishes.

Recorded season-best runner-up finish at the seasonopening Bucknell Invitational

Bromley was named the MAAC Women’s Golfer of the Week on Mar. 15 following a runner-up finish at LIU Brooklyn’s Lonnie Barton Invitational. Bromley was later selected to represent both Siena and the MAAC at the NCAA Career in Sports Forum, and was named a Sport Changes Life Victory Scholar.

Freshman Geovanny Mendoza led the Saints with six singles victories and three doubles triumphs Received an NCAA Public Recognition Award for the ninth consecutive season

WOMEN’S LACROSSE (1-15, 0-8 MAAC) Freshman midfielder Alexis Deaken was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year. A four-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, she ranked third nationally averaging 1.19 free-position goals per game.

Senior attack Michelle Schwartz was named a Second Team All-MAAC selection, and freshman midfielder Julia Sardella earned MAAC All-Rookie Team acclaim Sophomore goalie Sammy Horton ranked 11th nationally averaging 10.50 saves per game

WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING (MAAC Championships – Seventh) Recorded solid fourth-place finish out of 14 teams at the ECAC Championships

Junior Fiona Dretzka was named MAAC Swimmer of the Week Nov. 23, following three individual wins and one medley relay victory vs. conference foes Manhattan and Monmouth

All 20 student athletes on the team maintained cumulative GPAs of 3.17 or higher

WOMEN’S WATER POLO (3-23, 1-11 MAAC) Freshman attacker Diana Fernandez was named the 2016-17 Siena Athletics Female Rookie of the Year. A five-time Rookie of the Week, Fernandez set a new program-single-season record with 94 ejections drawn, and ranked fifth in the MAAC in both goals (75) and steals (59), and sixth in scoring (104)

Junior Clare Bryar was selected to represent both Siena and the MAAC at the NCAA Career in Sports Forum. She ranked third in the MAAC in scoring with 128 points.

Tony Rossi is honored for his 50 years of service at Siena College’s Employee Recognition Luncheon. Rossi, who completed his 48th season as the school’s baseball head coach, is presented with a 24-carat gold engraved whistle as part of his commemoration by Siena College Vice Presidents Paul Stec and Dave Smith, both of whom played for Rossi.

Siena College served as the proud host of the 2017 Special Olympics New York State Summer Games. Nearly 2,000 Special Olympics athletes competed in aquatics, basketball, bowling, gymnastics, powerlifting, tennis, and volleyball. The games are set to return to Siena in 2018.

AUGUST 16

Siena became just the third Division I women’s basketball team to take a foreign tour to Cuba. The Saints played three games against the Cuban National Team and learned a great deal from their once-in-a-lifetime experience about a culture and country relatively unknown to the outside world.

JULY 9

Incoming men’s basketball freshman Prince Oduro celebrates after leading his native Canada to the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup Championship in Cairo, Egypt. Oduro averaged 6.6 points and 4.1 rebounds in 15.8 minutes of action over seven tournament contests to propel his home nation to the country’s first-ever gold medal in a basketball world championship at any level.

AUGUST 28

Men’s basketball takes in the sights of the Parc du Mont-Royal overlooking Montreal. The Saints took a five-day international trip to the aptly named “The City of Saints” where they played three games against some of Canada’s top teams.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE A new Siena College record and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference leading eight programs were honored by the NCAA with Public Recognition Awards for achieving Academic Progress Rates (APR) in the top-10 percent of their respective sports nationally. Both tennis teams earned Public Recognition awards for the ninth consecutive year.

A school-record-tying 11 student athletes were named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine. Men’s golf’s Scott Kim was selected as a national semifinalist, while Madison Obata and Ryan Ghaderi were named the national sport winners in water polo and men’s lacrosse, respectively.

Kim was also named a 2017 Srixon/ Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar for the second consecutive season.

Water polo’s Clare Bryar and women’s golf’s Kristen Bromley were selected to represent both Siena and the MAAC at the NCAA Career in Sports Forum held in Indianapolis

Men’s basketball’s Brett Bisping became just the second student athlete in program history to be named a candidate for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. He was also tabbed a CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict I First Team selection.

Women’s soccer earned an NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 14th consecutive season for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Michele Tremblay was named the program’s third-ever CoSIDA Academic All-District I First Team selection, and only the seventh player in team history to earn NSCAA Scholar All-East Region honors.

The men’s and women’s cross country and track programs were heralded as USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams. The women’s track team’s 3.61 cumulative GPA was tied for the fifth highest of the 218 teams honored nationally. Sarah Forman was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District I First Team selection.

Women’s tennis was named an ITA AllAcademic Team, while a total of eight student athletes from both the women’s and men’s squads were named AllAcademic Team honorees for accruing cumulative GPAs in excess of 3.50.

Field hockey earned a Zag Field Hockey/ NFHCA Division I National Academic Team award for maintaining a 3.0 team GPA. Katelyn McMahon was named a Division I Scholar of Distinction for the second straight year for accruing a cumulative GPA in excess of 3.9.

Women’s lacrosse was named an IWLCA Academic Honor Squad, and both Lauren Anglim and Cara McQuillan were named to the Honor Roll

The NCAA’s annual Graduation Success Rate (GSR report) gives graduation information for student athletes who entered college in 2009, the most recent class for which the required six years of information is available. It also breaks down the GSR by sport, using a four-year class average (2006-09) called a cohort rate to provide a big enough sample.

Women’s swimming and diving received CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors following both the fall and spring semesters. The Saints have now been bestowed the award for 12 consecutive semesters.

ENHANCING THE STUDENT ATHLETE EXPERIENCE A total of 30 Saints during the 2016-17 school year – just under 10% of the student athlete population – hail from foreign countries. Men’s soccer led all teams with eight internationals, while a total of 10 teams had foreign student athletes on their rosters. With women’s basketball’s signing of Australia native Hayley Winter in April, Siena Athletics now boasts student athletes from six different continents. A total of 45% of Siena College’s 2016-17 international student population was comprised of student athletes.

Siena Athletics launched the inaugural Saints Leadership Academy to augment opportunities for team captains and self-selected student athletes to amplify leadership skills through Veteran or Emerging Leaders tracks. Sessions were held in the fall and spring for both student athletes and coaches, and were facilitated by the Janssen Sports Leadership Center.

Siena’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Student Athlete Mentors (SAM) continued to grow both in scope and depth in terms of their impact and outreach. Bromley is studying at Ulster University of Jordanstown in Northern Ireland where she is pursuing her master’s in sport coaching while also playing for the University’s golf team. Donohue is studying at Waterford IT of Waterford in the southeast region of Ireland where she is pursuing her master’s in business management, while also playing professionally for the Maxol WIT Wildcats.

SAINTS IN THE COMMUNITY

Members of the baseball team participated in the inaugural Duck Derby for Autism in nearby Scotia. The Saints sold ducks and worked tables at the event which seeks to promote lifelong access and opportunities and to improve the quality of life for people on the autism spectrum and their families.

The women’s basketball team came together to assist in the building of a new home in Schenectady as part of Habitat for Humanity Women’s cross country/track was awarded the 2016-17 S.A.IN.T.S Cup for going above and beyond in the community.

The Saints volunteered for numerous events including the American Cancer Societies’ Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the Mohawk Hudson Marathon, and the Northeast Regional Foodbank.

Members of the women’s soccer team completed a six-week initiative with the Boys & Girls Club of Albany where they spent time with local children while also teaching them various soccer skills

Student athletes and coaches from both teams visited several Capital Region area schools preaching the importance of hard work, strong academics, and making healthy choices, while also interacting with students through games and basketball drills.

Corporate sales saw a nearly 21% spike during 2016-17 as Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment set a new record for a second straight year with $741,735 in revenue for Siena Athletics. In just its first two years managing the athletic department’s multimedia and corporate sponsorship rights, VWSE has already brought in more than $1.3 million as revenue has increased by more than $200,000 marking nearly 30% in growth.

A new fundraising record of $623,756 was set in Saints Alive! giving during 2016-17, while an additional $1.93 million was raised for capital projects. Over the past three years, donations to Saints Alive! have increased by nearly 25%. Saints Alive! has raised over $6 million towards the enhancement of Siena Athletics since its inception in 1995.
