Dear Friends, It’s always great to reflect on an academic year, particularly when success and progress can be highlighted. Success: Women’s soccer, led by 17th-year head coach Steve Karbowski, won its second MAAC Championship and made its second NCAA Tournament appearance in six years. First-year men’s golf coach Steven Jensen and his team won the program’s fourth MAAC title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. We salute those two programs for their athletic achievements and applaud them for their academic successes as well. Both programs posted strong cumulative team GPAs during the 2015-16 academic year and, in fact, 18 of our 22 Division I athletic programs achieved 3.0 or better GPAs last year, and 16 hold GPAs in excess of a 3.0 cumulatively. Progress: The Alumni Recreation Center renovation project began the day after graduation with Phase 1A, which includes a new bank of bleachers along with some infrastructure critical to future phases. The feature of Phase 1A is a basketball practice court on the east end of the ARC. This provides men’s and women’s basketball, our flagship programs, with exclusive space and creates two separate courts within the ARC, giving all programs more flexibility in scheduling practices. We introduced four new Division I teams last year with the addition of both men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track. Thanks to the leadership of head coach John Kenworthy, our inaugural seasons got off to encouraging starts. The four track teams were responsible for 11 new first-year student athletes enrolling at Siena. In a time where competition for students is intense, this incremental increase in Siena’s student body is progress. Throughout these pages you will read about the many great accomplishments of our student athletes. Their athletic accomplishments are enhanced by their academic and social successes. We made some significant changes to our business model in 2015-16 as well. We assigned our multimedia and sponsorship rights to Van Wagner Sports and Entertainment (VWSE), and also began a relationship with the Aspire Group, the leading ticketing sales agency in the country. Combining the power of VWSE, Aspire, and a strong Siena Basketball tradition, our goal is to continue to grow the brand, increase attendance, and drive more revenue to support our student athletes. The Saints Alive! Athletic Fund is critical to our success. Money raised through Saints Alive! supports ALL of our student athletes and is responsible for 52% of the department’s operating budget. WOMEN’S SOCCER (12-7-3, 5-4-1) | MAAC Champions
Became the first-ever No. 6 seed to win the MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship, defeating each of the top-three seeds in the Tournament to claim the program’s second title (2010)
Had to go 3-0-1 over their final four regular-season matches – including a must-win on the road at Quinnipiac in the finale – simply to secure the sixth and final MAAC Tournament berth
Reeled off a magical seven-match unbeaten streak through the MAAC Championship Match which included six consecutive wins and a program-record shutout streak of 504:23
MAAC Tournament MVP Allison Clark led the team with four goals over the final eight matches upon being moved to striker. The steady, three-and-a-half-year starter at right back had never before scored prior to her position switch.
Set a MAAC Championship Match record with five goals scored, which came against a Manhattan defense that had previously bequeathed just four total over its first 11 matches against conference opponents
Recorded single-season records with nine shutouts and four consecutive clean sheets. Senior goalie Liz Rogan broke the program’s individual shutout record, and junior Tara Sobierajski played every minute in anchoring the center backfield en route to being named a First Team All-MAAC selection.

Earned second CBI berth in three seasons following program’s most victories in six years
Achieved a 10-win improvement from the previous season – which was tied for the 12th best nationally – while navigating a challenging schedule which included nine games against teams which finished in the top-85 of the RPI in which the Saints won three
Captured three key trophies, winning the 2K Classic Smithfield Subregional Championship, while recapturing the Albany Cup and retaining the Franciscan Cup Ranked 15th nationally in rebound margin (+7.8), 19th in offensive rebounding (13.4), and 24th in rebounds per game (40.1)

Advanced to the MAAC Championship Series for the fourth consecutive season and fifth time in six years. The Saints eclipsed the 20-victory mark while also posting a winning conference mark for the fourth year in a row.
Head coach Tony Rossi became the all-time winningest coach in any sport in MAAC history with his 832nd career victory on Apr. 9 vs. Quinnipiac. Following Augie Garrido’s departure from Texas following the season, Rossi became both the longest tenured active Division I head coach in the nation and the longest tenured active head coach at the same institution in any Division I sport.
First Team All-MAAC ace Kyano Cummings led the league and set a program single-season record with 91 strikeouts. Sophomore second baseman Jordan Bishop joined Cummings on the First Team, while sophomore first baseman Joe Drpich, senior outfielder Fred Smart, and junior outfielder Dan Swain earned Second Team All-MAAC recognition.

Junior guard Kollyns Scarbrough was named a Second Team All-MAAC selection. She led the Saints in scoring (11.4) and ranked second in the MAAC in steals (2.3) and fifth in free throw percentage (.797).
Freshman guard and MAAC All-Rookie Team selection Jackie Benitez was a three-time Rookie of the Week. She led all conference freshmen in scoring (10.7), steals (1.7 – sixth in the MAAC), and threes (58 – seventh MAAC), and led the league in free throw percentage (.821).

Siena made history when it traveled to Yale to compete in the school’s first-ever Division I indoor track meet. The College added men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track to the athletic department’s Division I offerings in July, increasing the number of Siena programs sponsored to 22.

Baseball made its debut at new-look Siena Field after receiving $500,000 worth of major upgrades over the previous summer and fall. Improvements included a new seating system with stadium chair back and bleacher seating, a new press box with filming platform, new backstop, decorative entryway, outfield irrigation system, dugout repairs and safety netting, and enhanced storage space.
Siena’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee President Emily Carideo presents assistant athletic trainer Brian McElroy with the SAAC Appreciation Award. The committee annually recognizes a member of the athletic administration or support staff for their commitment and dedication to Siena’s student athletes. In addition to his continued exemplary service to Siena’s student athletes, McElroy provided life-saving CPR to a fallen game official at a women’s soccer scrimmage the previous August.

Construction began the day after Siena’s 2016 Commencement on Phase 1A of a $13.5 million, multi-phase project to the Alumni Recreation Center and Marcelle Athletic Complex. Phase 1A featured the construction of an exclusive men’s and women’s basketball practice facility, and a new flooring and seating system for women’s basketball and volleyball home games in the ARC. Additionally, several team rooms were enhanced thanks to significant support.

It marked the eighth consecutive year that both Siena tennis teams earned the honor.

Ryan Ghaderi and Ashley Holdridge were selected as the national sport winners in both men’s and women’s lacrosse respectively, and were amongst 15 male and female national semifinalists, the first such honorees in Siena College history.

Freshman Katelyn McMahon was named a Division I Scholar of Distinction for accruing a GPA in excess of 3.90. Women’s lacrosse was named an IWLCA Academic Honor Squad, and Cara McQuillan and Lauren Smith were selected to the IWLCA Zag Sports Division I Academic Honor Roll. Smith was also named Siena College’s 2015-16 Student of the Year.

Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams received NSCAA College Team Academic Awards for maintaining cumulative team GPAs of 3.0 or higher. It marked the 13th consecutive year in which the women earned the honor.
Swimming and diving was named a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team for both the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters for achieving a team grade point average of 3.0 or better. All 25 student athletes on the 2015-16 roster possessed a 2.99 cumulative GPA or better at the conclusion of the academic year.

ENHANCING THE STUDENT ATHLETE EXPERIENCE Men’s basketball’s Ryan Oliver ’16 (back row, second from left) and the 22 other members of Sport Changes Life Victory Scholars Class of 2017 are joined by four-time major golf champion and program benefactor Rory McIlroy at the program launch at Nike Headquarters in New York City. Sport Changes Life aims to raise the aspirations of young people through sporting excellence, vocational and academic achievement, and personal development. Volleyball’s Erin Bies ’16 was named a semifinalist for the 12th Annual Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup, an award given for the most outstanding role model among athletes. The Wooden Cup is presented annually to a collegiate and a professional or Olympic athlete who have made the greatest possible influence in the lives of others. Bies made four service trips to Africa as a Siena student, including a five-week internship at the Botshabelo orphanage in South Africa during the summer prior to her senior year.
Softball’s Antonia Edwards ’16 leveraged two Siena Summer Legal Fellowships – one at American University and one at Fordham University in 2015 – and great grades into a solid merit package to attend St. John’s University School of Law. She is among the ever-growing number of Siena student athletes to pursue graduate or professional school.
Cross country/track’s Shane Fiust-Klink performed a summer of service in Tacloban City, Philippines. He volunteered for an organization called Volunteer for the Visayans where he worked at a rural health clinic helping checking patients in and recording vital signs, while also working in a missionaries for charity orphanage.

SAINTS IN THE COMMUNITY
The baseball team participated in Go4theGoal’s Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer campaign. The Saints wore Go4TheGoal’s gold shoelaces and gear in an effort to promote awareness for pediatric cancer while also actively raising hundreds of dollars for kids with cancer being treated locally.
Women’s cross country wore pink uniforms in an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer at their race at UAlbany Oct. 17. Prior to the race, the Saints held a fundraiser where supporters pledged money for the cause for each mile each runner completed in training the week before the meet.
Men’s lacrosse sophomore Colin McLaughlin instructs a youngster as part of the Saints’ PALS programs in which student athletes from several Siena teams spent time throughout the year with local school children teaching them sports. The men’s lacrosse program also played a leadership role in hosting the Third Annual “Faceoff For A Cause,” raising a new record $25,487 for Wounded Warrior Project.

Student athletes and coaches from both teams visited six Capital Region area schools preaching the importance of hard work, strong academics, and making healthy choices, while also interacting with students through games and basketball drills.

Men’s soccer was awarded the 2015-16 S.A.IN.T.S Cup for going above and beyond in the community. The Saints volunteered for numerous events associated with the local Boys and Girls Club and Ronald McDonald House and also conducted several clinics for various organizations including an offering for refugees from Myanmar.

Siena College Athletics and Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment entered into a comprehensive multi-year partnership to have VWSE manage the Athletic Department’s multimedia and corporate sponsorship rights. In the first year of the partnership, VWSE accumulated $587,100 in corporate sales, marking nearly an 11% increase from the previous year.

Men’s basketball student athletes, coaches and support staff pose at historic Cameron Indoor Stadium with donors and friends who helped make a private VIP charter flight to the Saints’ season-opening weekend at Duke and Wisconsin possible. Siena became the first school to open its season against the defending national champion and runner-up since the NCAA Tournament Field expanded to 64 teams in 1985.
