TRADITION Since the year after its founding in 1937, Siena has boasted a men’s basketball team that has captivated audiences in the Capital Region and beyond. In the original glory days of the late 1940s and early 1950s, the then-Indians advanced to the National Catholic Invitational Tournament four straight years, winning the title in Albany in 1950. The Rev. Maurus Fitzgerald served as the department’s first athletic director, publicizing his vision “that one day Siena would gain the same national fame in basketball that has been achieved in football by Notre Dame.” Following the success of the early 50s, the program was well on its way, as the Indians found themselves ranked in the AP top-20 in successive Howie Tucker was a member of Siena’s first team in 1938. seasons, catapulting as high as He was the first person inducted into the Siena Sports Hall of Fame 11th following an upset of Seton Hall in Albany’s Washington Avenue’s Armory. Siena Hall of Famer Billy Harrell was a big part of the team’s success in its teenage years, drawing the praise of national publications on his way to being drafted by both the National Basketball Association (Minneapolis Lakers) and Major League Baseball (Cleveland Indians). “The Flash” was a United Press Honorable Mention All-American as a senior in 1952. Over the next 20 years, the program struggled, winning no more than 14 games in any season. During that time, the Saints played in the longest game in NCAA history, a six-overtime loss to Niagara in 1952-53 (now the second longest). The following year, the player who provided the brightest moments during the “dark years,” Bill Kirsch, a 5-8 guard who was described as a “set-shot artist,” supplied one of the most memorable moments in program history, sinking a 60-foot shot at Madison Square Garden to beat Iona at the buzzer. Sportswriter David Eisenberg described the shot as “the most sensational basketball shot in Madison Square Garden Former Siena president, Fr. Kevin Mackin, O.F.M., presents Billy Harrell with a replica banner and a proclamation from history, a three-quarter the governor’s office courter from 60 feet out.” In 1972, the former set-shot standout took over as head men’s basketball coach and athletic director. It was under his leadership, and through his imagination, that Siena was given Division I status in 1976. After a brief incubation period, the program began to flourish, and has since periodically experienced the national acclaim Fitzgerald dared dream of over 80 years ago.

Head Coach Mike Deane guided Siena to the promised land of college basketball, the NCAA Tournament, for the first time in 1989 — the year after the program made its initial NIT appearance. After capturing the nation’s attention throughout the season as a result of a measles outbreak on campus that forced several games (including the North Atlantic Conference Tournament) to be quarantined, Siena knocked off third-seeded (and 13th ranked) Stanford in Greensboro, North Carolina to become one of the NCAA’s first “Cinderella Marc “Showbiz” Brown teams.” “Showbiz” Mark Brown, Siena’s all-time leading scorer with 2,284 career points, keyed the win with a game-high 32 points. Deane’s teams won 20 or more games four times in his eight years with the program, and advanced to the NIT three times, capped off by an unforgettable 1994 run. In his final season at the helm, the Saints played well into March thanks in large part to the efforts of another 2,000-point scorer, Doremus Bennerman. Bennerman went on to earn NIT Most Valuable Player honors after setting the Tournament record with 174 points (including a schoolrecord 51 at Madison Square Garden against Kansas State) as the now-Saints captured Third Place in the Mecca of basketball. After taking a step back after Deane’s departure, a period of time memorable only because of the full-time move to Pepsi Arena prior to the 1996-97 season, the program enjoyed a great renaissance that coincided with the arrival of Head Coach Paul Hewitt in 1997. Following seventh- and eighth-place finishes in the eight-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in the two years prior to his arrival, the Saints averaged 22 wins in Hewitt’s three seasons at the helm. The run was highlighted by successive postseason appearances in his final two years, the first of which was a return trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1999.

Kenny Hasbrouck ’10 greets Billy Harrell ’52 as Marc Brown ’91 looks on during the 2012 Siena Legends game. At the time, the three players were the only Saints to have their jersey number retired. On Dec. 29, 2012, Fred Shear’s ’73 No. 50 became the fourth jersey to be retired

Louis Orr continued the success in 2000-01, leading the program to another 20-win season. The following season, the Rob Lanier era began. Lanier became the first coach in program history to orchestrate consecutive postseason appearances in his first two years as head coach. In 2002, the Saints rallied from a sub-par regular season to win four MAAC Tournament games, advancing to the NCAA Opening Round where they became just the second team in Tournament history to win a game with a losing record. Siena knocked off Alcorn State 81-77 in Dayton, Ohio before succumbing to eventual National Champion Maryland in Washington, D.C. two days later. In Lanier’s second year of work, the Saints won 21 games including two Postseason NIT clashes on their home floor. In 2005, an exciting new chapter in Siena basketball began as Fran McCaffery assumed the reigns as head coach. McCaffery made an immediate impact, guiding Siena to the fifth greatest turnaround in all of Division I in his first year, and to a 20-win season and MAAC Championship Game appearance in his second season. In his third season, the Saints enjoyed one of the great years in program history, winning the MAAC Regular-Season and Tournament Championships before stunning No. 4 seed Vanderbilt in the NCAA Tournament First Round. During the 2008-09 season, McCaffery’s Saints equaled a program record with 27 wins and made another run to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. They won the MAAC Regular-Season and Tournament Championship before knocking off Ohio State 74-72 in double overtime in the First Round of the Big Dance. During McCaffery’s final season in 2009-10, the Saints won their third straight MAAC Tournament Title and made a third straight postseason appearance. On Mar. 25, 2019, Siena brought Tay “Firefly” Fisher ’08 delighted Siena back one of its own in alumnus fans for four years before moving on to a Carmen Maciariello ’01 to serve as the professional career with the world-famous

18th head coach in program history. Maciariello has wasted no time in returning the Saints to prominence, piloting the program to at least a share of back-to-back MAAC Regular-Season Championships in his first two seasons at the helm. In just his first season, he guided the Saints back to the promised land as he led his alma mater to its first MAAC RegularSeason Championship in a decade. Siena was also later awarded the program’s sixth MAAC Tournament Championship, after postseason play was cut short following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. From four Catholic Invitational Tournament appearances, to five National Invitation Tournament bids, to six berths in the NCAA Tournament. From the Washington Avenue Armory, to the Alumni Recreation Center, to the state-of-the-art 15,500-seat MVP Arena. The scope of Siena Basketball has changed over the program’s 82 seasons, helping to carry through the bold ideals set forth that many years ago by Rev. Fitzgerald.

Carmen Maciariello Head Coach • Fifth Season • Siena ’01

In his first four seasons at the helm, Siena Men’s Basketball alumnus Carmen Maciariello ’01 has restored his alma mater to prominence. The native of nearby Clifton Park, New York has directed the Saints to four straight top-three conference records, highlighted by at least a share of a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference RegularSeason Championships, and the awarding of an outright MAAC Tournament Championship in his first year. Additionally, Maciariello has developed a pair of MAAC Player of the Year honorees, with Manny Camper (2020-21) and future NBA Draft pick and current Denver Nuggets guard Jalen Pickett (2019-20) each earning acclaim. The now 45-year-old Maciariello, who was rewarded for his success with a three-year contract extension on Mar. 26, 2021 which runs through the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, has achieved a 64-44 (.593) overall record including a 50-26 (.658) mark in MAAC action. His 50 wins through his first 76 MAAC Regular-Season games coached is tied for the sixth-best start in the league’s 43-year history. “I want to thank Dr. Gibson, John D’Argenio, and all the amazing people I get to work with on a daily basis here at Siena College,” Maciariello said upon signing his contract extension in 2021. “I am thankful for the belief that the College and administration has shown in our program, and I’m excited for the many years to come.” Maciariello was promoted to be the 18th head coach in Siena Men’s Basketball history on Mar. 25, 2019, after having served the previous 2018-19 season as an assistant coach in his second stint with the program. He first entered the collegiate ranks as Siena’s director of basketball operations during the 2005-06 season, serving on the staff of Siena Athletics Hall of Famer Fran McCaffery. “We are pleased with the success Carm and the team have achieved the past two seasons,” said Siena College Vice President and Director of Athletics John D’Argenio upon Maciariello’s contract extension. “We’re excited to see the program continue to improve and compete for MAAC Championships, while continuing to do so in a way that aligns with Siena’s Franciscan values. Maciariello led the Saints to a program-record fifth consecutive top-three MAAC record this past season, encompassing his four seasons as head coach and his one year as an assistant. Siena also achieved a winning non-conference campaign, highlighted by a third-place finish in the prestigious ESPN Events Invitational, which included victories over power conference foes Florida State (ACC) and Seton Hall (BIG EAST). The Saints earned three All-MAAC honors, highlighted by MAAC Rookie of the Year selection Michael Eley. Maciariello piloted the Saints to a third straight winning season in 2021-22. Despite returning only three scholarship players from the year prior – and being ranked tied for fourth nationally for the most newcomers (11) – Siena went 7-3 in the month of February to finish with a 15-14 overall record and a third consecutive top-three MAAC finish under Maciariello with a 12-8 league mark. Maciariello guided Siena to a share of its second straight MAAC Regular-Season Championship in as many years, successfully navigating the Saints through an unprecedented 2020-21 season wrought by the challenges faced from the coronavirus pandemic. Siena overcame four separate in-season COVID-19 pauses and, despite being the second-to-last Division I team to tip-off its season on Jan. 3, persevered to post a 12-5 overall record including a 12-4 ledger in the MAAC. Maciariello piloted the Saints to a program-record-tying 16-game win streak bridging his first two seasons, which included a program-record eight straight true road wins. For his efforts, he was named one of 25 Division I finalists for both the Hugh Durham (top Division I mid-major coach) and Skip Prosser Man of the Year awards.

38

Maciariello achieved an unprecedented first season leading the Saints in 2019-20. Siena posted a 20-10 overall record including a stellar 15-5 record in the MAAC, culminating with the program’s eighth MAAC Regular-Season Championship while also being awarded its sixth MAAC Tournament Title. The only one of the 61 new Division I head coaching hires during the 2019-20 season to lead his team to an outright conference regular-season championship, Maciariello was named one of the “Top-12 Most Immediately Successful Hires of the 2019-20 Season” by CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander. Maciariello became the first rookie head coach in program history to lead Siena to an outright MAAC Regular-Season Championship in his first season, while his 20 wins tied for the most of any first-year Siena head coach. “Carmen is uniquely qualified to take over the reins of our men’s basketball program,” said the late Siena College President Br. F. Edward Coughlin, O.F.M., Ph.D. upon Maciariello’s hiring. “In addition to being an excellent basketball coach with a proven track record, his passion for Siena College and our student athletes is inspiring. He carries a deep understanding and commitment to the Siena mission, the community, and this special program that will serve him well. I share his vision of championship basketball, developing and graduating student athletes, and leading the way in the Capital Region. I know our fans join me in welcoming back a son of Siena to this key position at this key moment in our history.” Siena restored home court dominance under Maciariello’s leadership, posting a perfect 14-0 mark at MVP Arena (formally the Times Union Center) during the 2019-20 season, as the Saints were one of just 13 teams nationally to secure an undefeated home record. Maciariello brought back excitement to the Capital Region community and, in turn, the fans showed their outstanding support as the Saints boasted the top average attendance among all 56 Northeast mid-major programs. Siena’s average attendance of 6,228 ranked 83rd overall nationally – the program’s highest standing in five years – and 12th in the country among the 263 mid-major programs which served as a seven-spot increase from the year prior. Maciariello’s Saints have reached historic heights in the classroom during his stewardship. Siena has been bestowed with the

program’s first two National Association of Basketball Coaches Team Academic Excellence Awards following both his first and most recent seasons at the helm for achieving a 3.0 or better team grade-point average. This past season, the Saints were one of just 80 Division I programs – and the only MAAC team – to earn the honor after establishing a program-record 3.38 cumulative GPA for the 2022-23 school year. Moreover, the Saints posted a perfect 100% graduation success rate according to the latest NCAA GSR Report released in November 2022, and earned an 11-point jump in the latest NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) Report released in May, with the program’s score of 983 exceeding the national men’s basketball average by 16 points. “Saints Don’t Sit on the Sidelines,” and Maciariello has taken an active approach in giving back to his local Capital Region community and beyond. The Saints participated in more than 50 community service activities locally throughout the 2019-20 season, including delivering food and vital supplies to Capital Region first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic, organizing the Second Annual Autism Awareness and Sensory Friendly Game, and volunteering to assist Capital Region youth through the Ronald McDonald House, Make-A-Wish, Play It Foreward 518, Troy Boys and Girls Club, and the CAPTAIN Cares program, just to name a few. Following the conclusion of the season, the Saints were presented with the 2020 Autism Action Award by New York State Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara for the team’s success with the Autism Awareness and Sensory Friendly game. Maciariello also spearheaded the creation of Coaches 4 Change, an organization that engages, educates, empowers, and evolves the collegiate student athlete on the issues of social injustices, systemic racism, and the power of voting in the endless pursuit of equality. Maciariello returned to his alma mater for his second stint on staff in 2018-19, serving as an assistant coach who helped guide Siena to a 17-16 overall record including an 11-7 mark in the MAAC. The Saints’ 17 wins tied for the most of any MAAC team, and the squad’s nine-win improvement was tied for the 11th-best turnaround nationally. Siena finished in a tie for second place in the MAAC – placing nine spots higher than their preseason poll prediction – which tied UT Arlington for the largest improvement nationally. Maciariello served as the coordinator for a Siena defense during the 2018-19 season which ranked 42nd nationally allowing 66.0 points per game, the third-best mark during the program’s 43-year Division I era. Maciariello’s defense held the opposition to 70 points or fewer for 15 straight games, marking the program’s longest such streak in 26 years. Maciariello first entered the collegiate ranks as Siena’s director of basketball operations during the 2005-06 season under the direction of 2017 Siena Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Fran McCaffery. In Maciariello’s lone season with McCaffery, the Saints posted a nine-win improvement, helping lay the groundwork for the greatest three-year run in Siena Basketball history which yielded a trio of MAAC Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances from 2008-10. Maciariello graduated cum laude with a marketing and management degree from Siena in 2001. He helped guide the Saints to 20 wins and a share of the MAAC Regular-Season Championship during his senior season, after having sat out the previous year per NCAA transfer regulations following his matriculation from the University of New Hampshire. In his lone season playing for Siena, he appeared in 31 games (one start) and averaged 3.5 points and 1.6 rebounds spanning 11.3 minutes of action. Maciariello played three seasons for the Wildcats, where he was tabbed the team’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1998, and was a team captain during his junior season in 1998-99.

Maciariello spent 11 seasons as a Division I assistant coach, which included stops at Siena (2018-19), George Washington (2014-18), Boston University (2011-14), and Fairfield (2008-11). Maciariello’s teams made seven national postseason tournament appearances, while averaging 20.5 wins and a .624 winning percentage. He also helped guide his programs to a 124-70 (.639) conference mark and, including his time as an undergraduate at Siena, won a conference regular-season or postseason title at each school. George Washington amassed 87 wins and made three national postseason tournament appearances over Maciariello’s four seasons with the program. The Colonials captured the 2016 NIT Championship and won a program-record 28 games. Maciariello assisted Boston University to 57 victories, including a 38-12 (.760) league record, over his three seasons working under head coach Joe Jones. BU made a pair of national postseason tournament appearances during his tenure, punctuated by an NIT berth in 2013-14 when the Terriers achieved a 24-11 overall record and the program’s first Patriot League Regular-Season Championship with a 15-3 conference mark. Maciariello helped guide Fairfield to a 65-34 (.657) overall record and a 37-17 (.685) mark in the MAAC in three seasons on Ed Cooley’s staff. The Stags made a pair of national postseason tournament appearances during his tenure, highlighted by a school-record 25 wins, MAAC Regular-Season Championship, and NIT Second Round appearance in 2011. Maciariello first entered the coaching ranks with a two-year stint as vice president and head coach of the Albany City Rocks AAU program, where he coached a number of future Division I players and professional stars including Siena legend Edwin Ubiles, Jimmer Fredette, Mark Lyons, and Talor Battle. Following his collegiate playing career, Maciariello received Italian citizenship and played four professional seasons in Italy. He first signed with Bignami Castel Maggiore, before playing with GS Basket Massafra where he averaged 30 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Maciariello concluded his professional career in the League Due with Virtus Rigusa and Cimberio Novara in Sicily. Maciariello was inducted into the Capital District Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. A 1996 graduate of Shenendehowa High School, he was named the Albany Times Union Player of the Year after guiding the Plainsmen to a 22-2 overall record and Section II Championship. Maciariello and his wife, Laura, are the proud parents of a 6-year-old daughter, Reese, a 3-year-old son, Matteo, and welcomed their most recent addition, son Caden, born November 2022.

Bobby Castagna Assistant Coach • Third Season • CSUN ’75

Veteran NBA scout and collegiate basketball coach and administrator Bobby Castagna joined the Siena Men’s Basketball staff as an assistant coach in May 2021. The Brooklyn, New York native has spent more than four decades at both the collegiate and professional athletics levels, including 19 years as an NBA scout with the Utah Jazz. “It is such an honor that I am able to announce the addition of Coach Bobby Castagna to our coaching staff,” said head coach Carmen Maciariello upon Castagna’s appointment. “He is a tremendous teacher who builds lifelong relationships with the student athletes who he mentors, not only in the game of basketball, but in life, with myself and Andy Cavo ’02 being two prime examples. I cannot wait to welcome Coach C and his wife, Kim, to Loudonville.” In Castagna’s second season on staff this past winter, Siena won 17 games while achieving the program’s record fifth consecutive top-three MAAC finish. The Saints also posted a winning non-conference campaign, highlighted by a third-place finish in the prestigious ESPN Events Invitational, which included victories over power conference foes Florida State (ACC) and Seton Hall (BIG EAST). Three Saints earned All-MAAC honors, highlighted by MAAC Rookie of the Year selection Michael Eley. Castagna helped guide Siena to a 15-14 overall record including a third-place MAAC finish with a 12-8 league mark in his first season on staff. Despite returning only three scholarship players from the year prior – and being ranked tied for fourth nationally for the most newcomers (11) – Siena went 7-3 in the month of February to finish strong down the stretch. In addition to his nearly two decades serving in the scouting department for the Jazz, Castagna also previously spent 14 years as a Division I assistant coach and 11 years as a Division I athletics administrator. He began his collegiate career as both a head and assistant coach at the junior college level following a three-year stint as a high school coach.

their West Coast Regional scout on a part-time basis from 2002-10, while concurrently serving as the Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of California, Santa Barbara during those eight years. After retiring from UCSB in 2010, Castagna continued as the Utah Jazz West Coast Regional Scout on a full-time basis. As the Senior Associate Athletic Director at UCSB, Castagna supervised nine sports and was heavily involved in the department’s facilities projects, including overseeing the construction of the new athletic department facility. He previously served as the Director of Intramurals and Assistant Director of Recreation from 1999-02. Castagna first joined UCSB as an assistant coach from 1989-96, helping guide the Gauchos to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament in 1990 and a pair of NIT appearances (1992, 1993), while recruiting All-Big West selections Raymond Tutt (Big West Player of the Year), B.J. Bunton, Lelan McDougal, and Josh Merrill. During his time in Southern California, he also spent 11 years as the director of the Los Angeles Lakers Basketball Camps (1999-10). In addition to UCSB, Castagna has served as a Division I assistant coach at New Hampshire (1996-99), Baylor (1988-89), and Fresno State (1985-88). He recruited future Saints Maciariello and Cavo to UNH, and both coached and mentored current Utah Jazz Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Dennis Lindsey at Baylor. Castagna began his collegiate coaching career spending seven years at the junior college level. After serving as an assistant coach at Los Angeles Valley College (1979-81) and Los Angeles Mission College (1977-79), he spent three years as the head coach at LAVC (1982-85). Castagna led Los Angeles Valley College to back-to-back 20-win seasons, earning him 1983-84 Mountain Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors. He guided LAVC to the 1983-84 MVC Championship, while coaching two-time Junior College All-American Larry Middleton. Castagna first began coaching as the assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Chatsworth (CA) High School from 1975-78. Castagna is a 1975 graduate of California State University, Northridge, with his B.A. in Physical Education. He was a member of the CSUN basketball team, where he started his senior year.

“First and foremost, I’d like to thank the Utah Jazz for giving me the opportunity to work for them for the past 19 years,” explained Castagna upon his hiring. “The Jazz are a great organization with first-class people in it. I’m leaving a job that I’ve loved for nearly two decades, but this was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. Carmen is family. I’ve mentored him for 25 years, and I look forward to continuing that mentorship while helping him, the staff, and the players achieve their goals. I’m a teacher above all else, and I can’t wait to get started working with our players.”

“Coach Castagna’s knowledge of the game is vast, and his relationship-building skills are second to none,” added Maciariello. “He will be a tremendous asset in all phases of our program. It’s a great day to be a Saint!”

Castagna joined the Saints after having worked in the scouting department for the Utah Jazz since 2002. He was

Antoni Wyche

Assistant Coach • First Season • Notre Dame ’99

Antoni Wyche, who previously served under Carmen Maciariello during the first two years of his head coaching tenure, returned to the Siena Men’s Basketball staff as an assistant coach on Oct. 2, 2023. A native of nearby Ballston Lake, New York, Wyche returned home after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Notre Dame. “We are excited to welcome Antoni back to Loudonville,” said Maciariello, upon Wyche’s return. “He has a wealth of knowledge and experience, and will be a great addition to our staff.” Wyche brings 14 years of Division I coaching experience back home with him to the Capital Region, having previously served on staff at Lehigh (2009-19), Siena (2019-21), and Notre Dame (2021-23). He has helped his teams amass a 256-175 (.593) overall record including a 147-93 (.613) mark in conference action, highlighted by four NCAA Tournament berths. “I’m excited for the opportunity to return home and rejoin the Siena Basketball program,” said Wyche upon his return. “Siena has always been my second home, and I’m excited to hit the ground running with our staff and team as we work towards our shared goal of winning a MAAC Championship and earning an NCAA Tournament bid.” Wyche spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach under Mike Brey at his alma mater, Notre Dame. In his first season back in South Bend, Wyche helped guide the Fighting Irish to a 24-11 overall record including a 15-5 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference action, which culminated with a pair of NCAA Tournament victories.

assistant coach at perennial Patriot League power Lehigh, including the final eight as associate head coach. Wyche helped guide the Mountain Hawks to three national postseason tournament appearances including a pair of NCAA Tournament berths under the direction of Dr. Brett Reed. Lehigh amassed a 189-128 (.596) record during Wyche’s tenure, including a 102-62 (.622) mark in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks won a pair of Patriot League Championships to earn NCAA Tournament berths (2010, 2012), highlighted by a school-record 27 wins and an historic First Round upset of Duke in 2012 in which the Mountain Hawks became just the sixth No. 15 seed ever to beat a two-seed. Wyche also helped guide Lehigh to a 2013 College Basketball Invitational appearance, and consecutive Patriot League Championship Game berths in 2016 and 2017. The Mountain Hawks posted five 20-win seasons during Wyche’s decade in Bethlehem, and achieved winning overall records in all but one season. Lehigh finished in the top-four in the Patriot League Standings in nine of his 10 seasons, capped by a third-place conference finish with a 12-6 league mark and a 20-11 overall record in his final season. The Mountain Hawks also played their best basketball when it mattered the most, achieving a 27-5 (.844) record during the month of February during his final four years on staff. Wyche played a key role in both recruiting and developing some of Lehigh’s all-time greats over the decade, highlighted by two-time Patriot League Player of the Year, 2013 NBA Draft top-10 pick, and Portland Trail Blazers star C.J. McCollum. Wyche has also worked with several other top student athletes, including two-time Patriot League Player of the Year Tim Kempton and the first four-time All-Patriot League honoree in program history in Kahron Ross.

Wyche helped Maciariello lay the foundation during his first stint on staff in Loudonville, which culminated with a pair of MAAC Regular-Season Championships and a MAAC Tournament Championship. Overall, the Saints produced a 32-15 (.681) record including a stellar 27-9 (.750) mark in MAAC action during Wyche’s two seasons as assistant coach and defensive coordinator, which saw him also aid in the development of back-to-back MAAC Player of the Year honorees Jalen Pickett (2019-20) and Manny Camper (2020-21). In his second season at Siena, Wyche helped guide the Saints to a share of their second straight MAAC Regular-Season Championship. Siena won a program-record-tying 16 straight games which included a program-record eight consecutive true road wins bridging both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

A 1999 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Wyche appeared in 108 games for head coach John McLeod on a staff which included future Siena head coach Fran McCaffery. Wyche averaged 7.6 points for his career, highlighted by 11.2 points and 3.1 assists during his senior season in 1998-99 in which he served as a team captain.

In his first season with the Saints, Wyche helped guide Siena to the program’s eighth MAAC Regular-Season Championship and sixth MAAC Tournament title. The Saints posted a 20-10 overall record including a 15-5 mark in the MAAC, while achieving a perfect 14-0 record at the Times Union Center. Siena ended the season on a 10-game winning streak thanks in large part to Wyche’s defense, which allowed an average of just 59.1 points on only 38.6% shooting including 26.0% from three during that span.

Wyche, who starred in high school locally at Bishop Gibbons, and his wife, Jill, are the proud parents of daughters Keilah (15) and Jaya (13).

Wyche first arrived in Loudonville after spending the previous 10 seasons as an

Wyche enjoyed a decorated professional playing career in which he competed all over the globe, featuring stops in Macedonia, Mexico, Finland, Japan, Qatar, and Jordan. He averaged 21 points while leading Fersped Rabotnicki in Macedonia to a 33-4 record and a Macedonian First Division Championship, amassed 26 points and six assists per game for Club de Mayas in Mexico in 2002, tallied 17 points and four assists per contest for Kouvot in 2002-03 in Finland, and nine points, five rebounds, and a league-leading six assists for Niigata Albirex in Japan in 2006-07 to highlight his stops. Wyche also played in the United States Basketball League for the Adirondack Wildcats (2003) and New Jersey Shorecats (2000), and in the American Basketball Association for the Orange County Gladiators (2009).

Andy Farrell

Assistant Coach • First Season • Dayton ’07

A 16-year college basketball professional, including 13 seasons at the Division I level, Andy Farrell joined the Siena Men’s Basketball staff as an assistant coach to Carmen Maciariello in June 2023. Farrell joins the Saints after spending the past six years on staff at his alma mater, the University of Dayton. “Andy is a worker, and there is no task above him,” said Maciariello upon Farrell’s hiring. “He’s worked in various roles and different levels, and it’s always been the same end result: winning. Coming from a highly successful Dayton program, Coach Farrell will fit in seamlessly with how we attack each day.” Farrell brings an extensive collegiate basketball background with him to Loudonville, having most recently served as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach and Director of Recruiting for the past four years at Dayton (2019-23), after having rejoined the program as Director of Scouting and Program Development (2017-19). He was previously an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at both Southwest Mississippi Community College (2014-17) and Longwood University (2013-14), the Director of Basketball Operations and Assistant Recruiting Coordinator at DePaul University (2011-13), the Video Coordinator at Clemson University (2008-11), and a Graduate Assistant Coach and Assistant to the Video Coordinator at Virginia Commonwealth University (2007-08). “My wife, Jillian, and I are thrilled to be joining the Siena College family,” said Farrell upon his appointment. “I’ve had a relationship with Coach Carm for a long time now, and I’ve always respected him as a man, husband, father, and basketball coach. The culture, history of success, and amazing community support are all aspects of Siena Basketball that I’ve always admired from afar, and I’m so excited to now be a part of it.” Farrell spent the previous six seasons on the staff of Anthony Grant at his alma mater, where he played a role in the success of a Dayton program which posted a

44

124-64 (.660) overall record, including a 74-31 (.705) mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Flyers made three NIT appearances (2019, 2021, 2022 – Second Round) during his tenure, and posted a 29-2 overall record including a perfect 18-0 league mark while capturing the A-10 Regular-Season Championship and finishing the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season ranked third nationally in both the Associated Press Top-25 and USA Today Coaches’ Polls. As part of his role at Dayton, Farrell assisted with both opponent and self-scouting through the use of analytics, statistical breakdowns, and team metrics which aided the Flyers in producing one of the top-100 most efficient offenses nationally in each of his six seasons on staff – including the nation’s second most efficient offense in 2019-20 – and one of the top-65 most efficient defenses three times (2019-20, 2021-22, 2022-23). For his work, he was honored by Silver Waves Media as one of their “Most Impactful Coaches,” and was selected each of the past three years to attend the TopConnect Basketball Symposium, which identifies the nation’s top assistant coaches and connects them with athletic directors to provide tremendous networking and leadership development opportunities. In addition to his coaching background, Farrell is the Co-Founder of Rising Coaches Elite. He has served with the organization since its inception in 2010, and has been a member of Rising AD’s since 2013. A 2007 graduate of Dayton with his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Farrell earned his Masters of Science in Sport Leadership/Coaching from VCU in 2009, where he concurrently served in his graduate assistant coach and assistant video coordinator role under Grant. As an undergraduate at Dayton, Farrell served as both a student manager for the men’s basketball program as well as a marketing director and camp coordinator for the women’s basketball team under former Flyers Head Coach and current Siena Women’s Basketball Head Coach Jim Jabir. A native of Dayton, Ohio, Farrell and his wife, Jillian, are the proud parents to daughter, Giulianna, and son, Joshua.

Jonathan Pickett

Director of Basketball Operations • Third Season • UAlbany ’20

Capital Region native Jonathan Pickett (Mechanicville, New York) enters his third season on the Siena Men’s Basketball staff. The program’s special assistant to head coach Carmen Maciariello for the previous two seasons, Pickett was promoted to director of basketball operations in June 2023. “Jon brings constant energy and enthusiasm to all we do,” said Maciariello upon Pickett’s promotion. “He continually invests in our players, and always puts the program’s needs at the forefront. Coach Pickett has done a great job as my special assistant and will continue to be a tireless worker. We are thankful for his contributions to our program and are happy for the opportunity to advance his career through this promotion to his new role.” In Pickett’s second season on staff this past winter, Siena won 17 games while achieving the program’s record fifth consecutive top-three MAAC finish.

Pickett joined the Saints after spending the 2020-21 season as the Director of Analytics for the University at Albany Men’s Basketball team. In his role, he created analytic-driven reports aimed at aiding the coaching staff with scouting reports and internal player development. Pickett also developed a shot-tracking system, assisted in player development, and supervised and evaluated student managers. “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to stay home and continue to grow in my career under Coach Maciariello,” noted Pickett upon his hiring. “Siena Basketball holds a special place in the Capital Region, and I’m honored to join such a storied program.” As an undergraduate, Pickett served as the head student manager for the Great Danes for each of his final two seasons. He was the head manager and assistant to the video coordinator for the UAlbany Women’s Basketball program during his two years as an underclassman. Pickett is a 2020 graduate of UAlbany with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Business Administration – Financial Management.

In his first season on staff, Siena achieved a 15-14 overall record and finished third in the MAAC with a 12-8 league mark.

Despite returning only three scholarship players from the year prior – and being ranked tied for fourth nationally for the most newcomers (11) – Siena went 7-3 in the month of February to finish strong down the stretch.

Nick Pederson

Special Assistant to the Head Coach • First Season • Minnesota ’21

Nick Pederson, who spent the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant at the University of Minnesota, joined the Siena Men’s Basketball program as the Special Assistant to Head Coach Carmen Maciariello in July 2023. “Nick is a worker who is well-versed in both film and technology, and is excited to tackle any task to help our program,” said Maciariello upon Pederson’s hiring. “He has a great pedigree coming from the Big Ten as well as some grassroots basketball experience. We are happy to have him here with us.” Pederson joins the Saints after spending the past two seasons (2021-23) on head coach Ben Johnson’s support staff, where he assisted in the day-to-day operations for the Golden Gophers, including working with the coaching staff on scouting breakdowns, film, and personnel reports. Pederson, who was a student manager throughout his time as an undergraduate at Minnesota (2018-21), also helped oversee

the team’s managers and assisted with the student athletes’ day-to-day schedules as part of his most recent role. “I’m very excited to join the Siena Men’s Basketball Family and have the opportunity to work for Coach Carm,” said Pederson upon his appointment. “I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity to continue to grow my knowledge, experience, and career in basketball under Coach Carm. I can’t wait to get to work with this great group of players and coaches, and am honored to join such a storied program.” Pederson also brings AAU experience with him to Loudonville, having spent this past year as an assistant coach on the 3SSB Adidas League circuit with D1 Minnesota. Additionally, he has worked as a trainer for Catalyst Basketball, assisting NBA Skills Trainer Reid Ouse in private workouts for players ranging from the youth level to high-major Division I, to the pros. A native of Verona, Wisconsin, Pederson played collegiately his freshman year at Division III Aurora University before transferring to Minnesota. A 2021 graduate of Minnesota with his B.S. in Sport Management, he recently earned his Masters of Education in Sports Management from Minnesota in May.

METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE With 11 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) is in its 43rd year of competition during the 2023-24 academic year. The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College, and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of Men’s Cross Country and Men’s Soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC Men’s Basketball game and the MAAC story had begun. Current Conference members include: Canisius University, Fairfield University, Iona University, Manhattan College, Marist College, Mount St. Mary’s University, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s University, and Siena College. The MAAC supports 24 sports and championships during the 2023-24 academic year; in addition, the MAAC champion earns automatic qualification to the NCAA Championship in 15 sports. On October 23, 2023, the MAAC announced the addition of Merrimack College and Sacred Heart University as its newest member institutions effective July 1, 2024. The addition of these two institutions will propel the conference to an all-time membership high of 13 for the 2024-25 academic year. On June 1, 2018, the MAAC announced that Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ was selected to host the 2020-22 MAAC Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championships. The MAAC Council of Presidents unanimously accepted the facility’s bid to host the championships at their May 30th meeting in New York City. In 2020, Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall hosted the MAAC Basketball Championships (ended abruptly due to COVID-19) for the first time in history and the Championships returned to the state of New Jersey for the first time since 2003, when they were played at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton. In 2022, the MAAC returned to Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, successfully completing the championships with no COVID limitations for the first time since moving to Atlantic City. Saint Peter’s men and Fairfield women captured the championship trophies and moved on to the NCAA March Madness field of 68. Saint Peter’s would go on to become Cinderella of the tournament, making MAAC and NCAA history along the way. A No. 15 seed, Saint Peter’s became the first MAAC program (men or women) to advance to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, defeating No. 2 Kentucky (85-79 OT), No. 7 Murray St. (70-60), and No. 3 Purdue (67-64). The Peacocks were also the first-ever 15 seed in NCAA history to advance to the Elite Eight. On March 6, 2023, the MAAC announced that Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall will remain as the host site for the 2024-26 men’s and women’s basketball Championships. The three-year extension will afford the conference the right to host its annual basketball championships at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in 2024, 2025, and 2026. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, and a top reputation for hosting events, the MAAC has been able to be awarded several future NCAA Championships. Alongside Canisius and Niagara, the MAAC successfully hosted the 2022 Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, NY. The MAAC and Siena College hosted the 2023 Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds, and are set to host the 2024 Women’s Basketball Regionals at the MVP Center in Albany, NY. The MAAC, alongside the Ivy League, was also selected to host the 2025 Women’s Rowing Championship Finals (Divisions I, II, and III) at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, NJ. In 2026, the MAAC, along with Canisius College and Niagara University, will host the Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, NY. In March 2018, the MAAC hosted the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Albany Regional with Siena College for the second time since 2015 at the MVP Center in Albany, NY. The Albany Regional was the highest attended site out of the four regions with more than 20,000 fans in attendance over the two days of competition. During the 2016-17 academic year, the MAAC hosted the NCAA Division I Cross Country Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park with Iona and Manhattan, the 2017 NCAA Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, NY with Canisius and Niagara, which marked the fifth time that all three parties partnered for this same event (2004, 2007, 2010, and 2014), and the 2017 NCAA Division I, II, and III Rowing Championships with the Ivy League at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, NJ. ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS

The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field, Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona Women’s Rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. MAAC student athletes continue to excel in the classroom at high rates. The NCAA announced the latest four-year Academic Progress Rates (APR) and 40 MAAC teams achieved perfect APR scores (1,000) – 28 women’s and 12 men’s, while 5 league sports saw an increase in their average rate from the 2020-21 report, and 10 MAAC sports posted rates above or equal to the national average. According to the 2021-22 data, the MAAC was led by a trio of institutions, Fairfield University, Marist College, and Siena College, which all had six teams earning a perfect mark. Quinnipiac University followed with five teams recording perfect scores. Manhattan College, Mount St. Mary’s University, and Niagara University recorded three flawless scores. Iona University and Rider University registered two teams with a score of 1,000, while Canisius College had one squad with a perfect tally. Jacksonville University (Women’s Rowing), Loyola University Chicago (Women’s Golf), and Villanova University (Women’s Water Polo) achieved perfect scores. Women’s lacrosse had the highest MAAC multiyear average at 994. The largest improvement on the men’s side was tennis

56

(+9), while women’s swimming (+1) and women’s volleyball (+1) had the highest jump on the women’s side. Overall, the MAAC’s four-year average improved from last year’s report, jumping to 984, which ranked tied for ninth nationally amongst the other 32 Division I conferences. First-class facilities are the standard within the MAAC, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, Barclays Center, Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, MassMutual Center, KeyBank Center, MVP Arena, Webster Bank Arena, Mohegan Sun Arena, and Sun National Bank Center. In October 2022, the MAAC announced three-year partnerships with Clover Stadium for the MAAC Baseball Championship and SPIRE Academy for the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships. The Clover Stadium agreement made Pomona, NY the home of the 2023, 2024, and 2025 MAAC Baseball Championships. The SPIRE partnership made Geneva, Ohio the host site for the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships for 2024, 2025, and 2026. In the past several years, many MAAC schools have enjoyed success in national postseason play. Saint Peter’s Men’s Basketball made March Madness history in 2022 when they became the first ever 15-seed and MAAC Men’s Basketball program to reach the Elite Eight. The Peacocks defeated second-seeded Kentucky, seventh-seeded Murray State, and third-seeded Purdue on their historic run. In 2018, Quinnipiac Women’s Basketball picked up its third NCAA Tournament win in the last two years. The Bobcats defeated Miami in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 1 UConn in the Second Round. In 2017, Quinnipiac won its first NCAA Championship game in program history and became the first MAAC women’s basketball program to advance to the Sweet 16 since Marist in 2007. The Bobcats defeated Marquette and Miami en route to their Sweet 16 appearance against South Carolina. In 2015, Siena’s Women’s Basketball team became the first MAAC Women’s Basketball program to make it to a postseason championship game. The Saints advanced all the way to the title contest of the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) where Siena fell to Louisiana-Lafayette. In 2007, the Marist Women’s Basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, Tennessee. The Red Foxes have recorded an additional five NCAA wins since their run in 2007. The Saint Peter’s Men’s Basketball team claimed the 2017 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) title, to become the first MAAC program to win a national postseason championship since Siena’s Men’s Basketball team in 2014. The Saints earned the league’s first basketball postseason championship in its history by winning the 2014 College Basketball Invitational (CBI). In 2013, the MAAC had a record six Men’s Basketball programs participate in postseason play – Iona (NCAA Championship), Niagara (NIT), Canisius, Fairfield, Loyola, and Rider (CIT). Canisius and Loyola both advanced to the Quarterfinal Round, while Rider reached the second round. In 2012, the MAAC had two teams advance to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship for the first time in 16 years, with Loyola earning the league’s automatic bid and Iona garnering an at-large bid. In baseball in 2021, the MAAC received its first at-large selection to an NCAA regional in conference history when Fairfield Baseball earned the third-seed in the Austin Regional. The Stags made it all the way to the Austin Regional Final, defeating fourth-seeded Southern and second-seeded Arizona State. Fairfield began the regular season 28-0 in conference play and finished 39-5 overall. LEADER IN INNOVATION

The MAAC Council of Presidents approved bylaws to launch an Esports League and Championships in 2020. The presidents approved Esports as an official MAAC co-ed club sport. The decision came after two years of evaluation and co-sponsorship of events with the ECAC, including the highly successful HV Gamer Con 2019 in Albany, NY. In 2022, the MAAC held its first in-person Esports Championships at the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City. Team champions were Iona (Rocket League), Marist (Overwatch and League of Legends), and Quinnipiac (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate). Marist was named 2022 Program of the Year. The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2017, the league reached a conference-wide agreement with SIDEARM Sports (extended in 2020), to design and host the MAAC web page. MAACSports.com has been a great success, providing fans with fresh content, up-to-date results, live and on-demand video, and an online merchandise store. The site was redesigned in the fall of 2021. In May 2014, the MAAC continued to grow its partnership with ESPN by announcing the launch of the MAAC Branded ESPN+/3 Channel. All MAAC- and school-produced digital content can be viewed through this channel. In the 2017-18 academic year the MAAC entered into a new eight-year agreement with ESPN and produced a total of 325 events on the ESPN family of networks. Under the ESPN agreement, 2019-20 marked the first year that all MAAC institutions will have school production facilities and by the end of 2024-25, the conference and schools will produce more than 700 collegiate athletic events and shows on the ESPN family of networks. The MAAC President for the 2023-24 academic year is Judy D. Olian, PhD, President of Quinnipiac University. The Vice-President is Mark R. Nemec, PhD, Commissioner Travis Tellitocci serves as the league’s Secretary/Treasurer, John D’Argenio, Vice President/Director of Athletics at Siena College, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Jamie Fogarty, Senior Associate AD/Senior Woman Administrator at Iona University, will serve as Vice Chair.

ABOUT SIENA ATHLETICS Since Siena’s founding in 1937, athletics have played an important role in the development of its students and community. In 1976, Siena’s athletics program was elevated to NCAA Division I status. With that move, the College committed itself to upgrading its program and making all teams competitive. Officially renamed on Jan. 1, 2022, MVP Arena in downtown Albany has served as the exclusive home court for Siena Men’s Basketball since 1997. Over that time, Siena’s attendance has soared to new heights, bringing national acclaim to the mid-major program that competes in a major basketball setting. The Saints have ranked in the top-100 nationally in average home attendance for 25 consecutive seasons, and boasted the nation’s top average attendance amongst all Northeast mid-major programs three years running. MVP Arena has helped Siena Basketball grow into the premier sports entity in New York’s Capital Region. With more than one million people to draw from, the Albany area has developed a national reputation as a booming college basketball town, and Siena has led the way. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships have been contested in Albany 20 times since Siena joined the conference in 1989, and have enjoyed record attendances. The MAAC Tournament returned to MVP Arena most recently for a five-year stint from 2015-19, with Siena again serving as the host school. MVP Arena has also served as the venue to both past and upcoming NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments, with Siena and the MAAC serving as co-hosts each year. The 1995 Men’s First and Second Rounds, 2003 Men’s East Regionals, 2015 Women’s Regionals, 2018 Women’s Regionals, 2019 Women’s Regionals, and 2023 Men’s First and Second Rounds were all contested at the facility, with the Syracuse men (2003), UConn women (2015), and UConn men (2023) all beginning their National Championship runs in Albany. Siena has hosted nine Postseason NIT games at MVP Arena, and four of those have drawn more than 10,000 fans. The Saints’ 10-point win over Tulane in the 1994 NIT was witnessed by a record 15,727 fans.

64

It is the consistent support the Siena program has received from its roughly 1,000 season ticket holders that makes these national events a reality. The Saints have drawn more than 2.7 million fans spanning 420 games played in their downtown home, marking an average of 6,452 spectators. In 2009-10, the Saints welcomed a program-record 133,505 spectators through the MVP Arena doors, an average of 7,853 fans per game. The Saints won three straight MAAC Championships and 38 straight games at MVP Arena from 2008-10. The 2010 MAAC Championships drew a record 53,569 fans, highlighted by a crowd of 10,679 for Siena’s overtime victory over Fairfield in the title game. In November of 2004, a sold-out crowd of 14,743 turned out for Siena’s home game against defending National Champion Syracuse at MVP Arena, the largest crowd ever to witness a regular-season Siena home game. In 2002-03, Siena boasted the largest attendance figure in the nation per enrollment, and placed 66th among all Division I schools and fourth nationally for mid-major programs. Siena’s clash with crosstown foe UAlbany on December 1, 2012 marked the 30th 10,000-fan game the Saints have hosted. Siena tallied its 2-millionth fan on December 23, 2014 against Cornell University. The Saints are an impressive 263-120 (.687)* at MVP Arena since making the full-time move to the facility in 1997-98. Siena returned to MVP Arena in 2021-22 following a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, after playing all of its home games during the 2020-21 season on campus at the UHY Center without spectators. *A total of 24 home wins which occurred between Jan. 21, 2016 through the conclusion of the 2017-18 season were later vacated by the NCAA Committee on Infractions

BECOME A PART OF THE TEAM!

The Saints Alive! Athletics Fund is vital to the success of Siena’s intercollegiate athletic program. In the effort to compete both financially and athletically with schools in our conference and across the country, we must increase outside funding. The rising costs associated with sponsoring a broad-based athletics program continues to challenge us. The College and our athletic department have made a commitment to our student athletes. Now, more than ever, we need your support to reach our goals and establish strong traditions. Please consider a gift to the Saints Alive! Athletics Fund at the level most appropriate. Any contribution you are willing to make will be a tremendous boost to our athletic programs. With your support, we can make our athletic programs reach goals that many thought unattainable. Help us make our aspirations become a reality and the impossible, possible! The most fundamental means of support to Siena is through the Annual Fund, which provides unrestricted dollars to the entire College. If you would like to support the SAINTS ALIVE! Athletics Fund, we ask that you do so in addition to and not instead of the Annual Fund. The amount of your charitable tax deduction must be reduced by the value of the benefits to which you are entitled. Siena College will provide you with the value of each benefit. Fifteen percent of all donations are allocated to the Saints Alive! General Fund to cover administrative costs.
