Daniel is a member of National Honor Society, Leo Club and participates in soccer, basketball and tennis teams. He has earned various Student of the Month awards in several disciplines and was recognized as a Section 2 soccer All-Star. Daniel is active with local food drives and Mini-thon events. After high school graduation, Daniel plans to attend college majoring in engineering.

Obituaries Clifford Leonard Behrendt, 93, husband of Jean Getz Behrendt, Londonderry Village, Palmyra, formerly of Denver, passed away on Thursday, November 29.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Clifford L. Behrendt Jr., a daughter, Deborah J. Bridgewater, wife of John T. Bridgewater; four grandchildren; four great­grandchildren; and a sister, Trudy Williamson.

Gerrie Mae Brown, 88, Ephrata, passed away on Thursday, November 29.

She is survived by three sons: Clyde E., husband of Linda J. (Martin) Brown, Ephrata; Michael L., hus­ band of Lynette (Daugherty) Brown, Ephrata; and Thomas L., husband of Tammie (Schmuck) Brown, Akron; 12 grandchildren; 15 great­grandchildren; and one great­great­grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Shee­ han.

Jack D. Gainer, 76, Reamstown, passed away on Saturday, December 1.

He is survived by two sisters: Arlene Roberts, and Polly Gainer.

Alfred (Al) H. Claassen, 93, Landis Homes, Lititz, passed away on Sunday, December 2.

He was the husband of the late Valois Penner, and the

late Gladys Moyer.

Lititz Senior Center Lists Activities

The following listing is for the Lititz Senior Center, located at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 East Market Street, Lititz. *Note: The Cocalico Senior Center is closed and people will be transferred to the Lititz Senior Center.

Lititz Senior Center The Lancaster County Office of Aging, Lititz Senior Citizens Center, Lititz United Methodist Church, Lititz, is open Wednesday, Thursday and Monday, from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with Coffee and Chat Time at 9:00 a.m. and Lunch served at noon.

The Center serves Lancaster County residents of Ephrata, Rothsville, Akron, Neffsville and Lititz areas. Ephrata is also served by van service. Reservations for lunch and transportation need to be made by 11:00 a.m., one day in advance by

calling the Center at 717­ 626­2800.

(Translation) Who would like to have a groundhog in the house? We had one once and I think Mom even liked it a bit until the groundhog became too nasty!

My brother found it one Sunday. A big groundhog had been killed instantly on the road. But, when my brother came near, he saw a little groundhog run away. Then he caught it in the grass. It was just a few days old.

When he brought it home, my sister immediately took it for her own. She gave it a bottle with warm goat milk.

At first she had to coax it, but before long it knew when it was time to eat. It scratched in its box like everything. Then when we came with the bottle, it lay flat on its back and held the bottle with its front feet and suckled (and made suckling sounds) like a piglet.

It didn’t go very long until it crawled out of the box.

Early in the morning, just before daybreak it whistled. And it recognized us. When strange folk came near, it spit and tried to hide itself.

One time, when everyone was outside, it emptied out the trash can. With the trash it made a nest behind the cupboard.

It also learned to crawl up and scratch the earth out of the flower pots. When we put it back into its box, sometimes it acted like a displeased child. It lay flat on its back in the corner and sucked on a rag.

The little groundhog was always clean and never made a mess on the floor but always went into its box. Whenever she ate, she sat on her hind legs and held the food with her front legs. She sat straight up and never dropped a drop, even with peas and sour cherries. The stones and leaves that were left over she put into her box.

Finally we sold the groundhog and my sister could hardly take it. Beheading Cats One time my brother was beheading chickens. I don’t know why he was, because he wasn’t very old for such a job! Behind him was the smart old cat (sitting), waiting for the head (of the chicken). My brother raised the ax into the air with one hand and the fluttering chicken in the other ­ and then down came the ax!

But, oh my, the chicken fluttered about more than it ever had before and the head was not completely severed! Then my brother got a bit excited. He raised his arm again to chop again. But just then the cat jumped to catch the head!

Tales From Pennytown were written by three boys who this year attended the Old Order parochial school, which is located just along a creek just below and west of windy, old Pennytown in the eastern reaches of Lancaster County.

To find this school you head east out of Terre Hill, leave Lichty’s Mennonite Church on your right, follow the winding road until you see the small white school by the roadside on the left.

We could comment at length on these three delightful anecdotes, but they speak for themselves. Bischli­Gnippli’s hat is off to Marlin, Leonard and to Ben! Their stories are well­written and entertaining. We hope their efforts will encourage others ­ old and young to do likewise. We think that these youngsters put some of the old­timers to shame, don’t you?

Lemonade Muffins A muffin that is great for breakfast or alongside a salad for lunch. You are sure to please whenever you choose to serve it.

1½ cups Bisquick Heart Smart Baking Mix 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons Splenda Granular 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 (6-ounce) can frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed 1 egg, well-beaten, or equivalent in egg substitute 2 tablespoons fat-free half & half 1/4 cup I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Light Margarine 1/4 cup chopped walnuts 9:18:00 AM 1. Heat oven to 400 F. Spray 8 muffin wells with butter-flavored cooking spray or line with paper liners.

2. In a large bowl, combine baking mix, 1/4 cup Splenda and baking powder. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup lemonade concentrate, egg, half and half and margarine. Add lemonade mixture to baking mix mixture.

Mix gently just to combine. Fold in walnuts. Evenly spoon batter into prepared muffin wells.

by Pastor Ricky Kurth One thing for sure about the Apostle Paul, he was never satisfied with the spiritual condition of the saints. Nowhere is this more evident than in his words to the church at Thessalonica:

“But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you…indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more” (I Thes.

4:9,10).

Did you catch that? After acknowledging that the brotherly love of the Thessalonians was so great that it had spilled over into the surrounding regions of Macedonia, rather than con­ gratulate them, the apostle begged them to “increase more and more.” When it came to wanting God’s people to grow in the Lord, there was no end to the Apostle Paul! In this he reminds me of my father,

friend, who had known my dad for years, just laughed at him, and asked, “What would you do if you won the lottery? You wouldn’t retire like most people, you’d just buy more machines!”

Beloved, that’s the way to achieve greatness in any field of endeavor. Never be satisfied! Paul wasn’t satis­ fied with the surpassing love of the saints at Thessalonica.

9th Annual Stockings For Soldiers Project Collection

Many soldiers serving the country in Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq will have something to smile about this Christmas. The Keystone Military Families’ Stockings for Soldiers project.

Keystone Military Families, a non-profit organization, founded

by Kyle Lord (a military mother of a soldier who served five tours of duty) began the project in 2002.

This year the goal is to send 10,000 stuffed stockings from local communities to the dedicated troops who will not be able to enjoy the comforts of home during this holiday season.

“We at Keystone Military Families have been blessed by the way we have been embraced by this community,” stated Kyle Lord. “Every year you open your hearts to let those serving our great nation know they have not been forgotten back home. Our project could never happen without such generosity and Christmas spirit. To all the donors and volunteers at Blue Ridge Communications, the town of Ephrata and surrounding comm­ unities of central PA, and indeed everyone that had a part of this

year’s campaign we cannot thank you enough. Your enthusiasm and dedication truly warms our hearts.

These gifts will surely convey the spirit of Christmas and the best wishes of the holiday season to every military member who receives them. Thank you for your continued support over these last nine years.” Lord also went on to state, “I hope and pray that as long as there are troops away from home and facing danger our partnership of support will continue to show them we care, we miss them and we are forever proud of them. East Cocalico Lions Held Toll Road It was cold and windy (starting temperature was 9 degrees), but the East Cocalico Lions Club of District 14-D still held their annual Toll Road Collection, which benefits four local organizations on “Black” Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. The Lions Club members asked a small toll or donation from all cars, trucks, motorcycles and buggies that passed through the square in Reamstown.

What they got, thanks to the generosity of the community and all drivers, were coins, bills and even checks totaling over $3,000.

One hundred percent of what was collected, along with a donation from the Lions Club, will be divided and distributed evenly between the Reamstown Memorial Park, Hospice and Community Care, Ephrata Area Social Services and the Breast Cancer Coalition at a future Club Meeting.

Hinkletown i kl Mennonite i Ceili Marquis 8th Grade If anyone ever wants to find Ceili Marquis, they will likely discover her serving others or singing while doing her schoolwork. Ceili has been supported by her wonderful parents, Sean and Juanice, and she has two brothers, Colin and Ian, who have been by her side since she was little. Ceili and her family attend New Holland Church of the Nazarene almost every Sunday. This wonderful eighth grader has been going to Hinkletown Mennonite School since she was in second grade. Ceili has many gifts, and they include showing others what God has given her and helping them see God’s love through her.

Anything Ceili does, she makes sure to do it with kindness and love. She is involved in many school activities, such as writing for the newspaper, being one of the voices for morning announcements, and taking care of the animals in the science room. She enjoys being involved in activities because it gives her an opportunity to show God’s love. One of Ceili’s many friends, Sienna Smith, mentioned that she is always humming or singing a song that praises God. Ceili is regularly singing during her many hobbies. She has enjoyed learning how to play the ukulele, and at home she loves to play videogames, read, write, and sing. Ceili is in the Middle School Chamber Choir this year, and she looks forward to it because it gives her a chance to worship with others.

Ceili has experienced God’s love and she wants others to see it, too.

Ceili shows others what God has blessed her with whenever she can. She has touched so many people during her life. She is funny, smart, and kind. Ceili is an amazing person who loves God and will forever follow Him.

Ephrata Mennonite Tirza Martin 8th Grade Tirza Brie Martin is a 13 year old 8th grader from Ephrata Mennonite School. This is her first year attending EMS, and she is thrilled to be here in a different environment than what she is used to. Out of the classes in her first semester schedule, she enjoys math the most, as it is a fun class and it comes fairly easily for her.

Though that is part of Tirza’s school life, at home she enjoys chilling and watching a movie, but she also loves playing with her pets: two kittens named Marbles and Granite. She loves animals and someday hopes to own a horse and live on a ranch out west. Tirza has two brothers and two sisters, three of which are married. She is the youngest in her family and the youngest cousin on her mom’s side of the family. When she was younger, she thoroughly enjoyed the random games, which were created by the cousins, involving all of the cousins and Ripsticks. Tirza attends and is a member at Lititz Dunkard Brethren Church. Since I am related to Tirza, I have the honor of knowing her funny, energetic, and enjoyable personality.

We are all very excited to have Tirza attending EMS with us and love all of the joy she brings to our school.
