Ephrata Librarian Trip To Finland
(Continued From Page 1A)
From the temperatures, daylight, and relatively remote living, Hull, individually
and as an educator, wanted to challenge herself and explore why Finland has been so successful in the realms of education and public libraries.
Though she had never visited Finland, Hull was excited for this opportunity saying, “There is something to be said about learning about a place and its people

and culture by immersing yourself in the culture for a sustained time.” Her interest in international education began as early as high school, going on school trips to England and Ireland, followed by studying abroad during her undergraduate experience. Traveling and practicing internationally with her NCAA field hockey team and taking students on trips to other countries are just some of the ways Hull has continued to feed her passion for global education over the years. Since then, Hull has found different opportunities that enable her to connect with and learn from teachers and librarians in various countries both face to face and virtually.
Professionally, Hull immersed herself in Finland’s public library and education
systems, gaining insight into how public libraries strategically support compulsory education. In her opinion, the most impactful difference she saw in the American and Finnish school systems is the absolute trust and autonomy professionals have to do their job, balanced with the trust educators have with parents to make the right choices for their children. Teachers in Finland are required to have a Master’s degree and getting into teaching programs at universities in Finland, can be compared to getting into medical schools here in America. The trust educators are given in Finland school

systems allows teachers to be creative and provide authentic opportunities for students that are not scripted. Personally, Hull learned a lot by watching her children adapt to a new country, including attending Finnish schools, joining different sports groups, and embracing a life that often casts Americans as outsiders. Hull says of her children, “Their courage reminded me that adaptability is an innate human strength, especially in children, when given structure, encouragement, and trust.” Hull’s children have expressed their favorite parts of the Finnish school day, including shorter school hours, healthier food options, outside time every hour, and the activities that are offered in physical education class (skiing, snowboarding and ice skating). Finnish students
also do not wear shoes indoors.
While abroad, Hull and her family were fortunate enough to explore various parts of Finland, from the Arctic Circle to the southern islands of Helsinki. Other excursions included exploring the Nordic region and visiting Estonia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and even traveling as far south as France. Hull and her family took the scenic route home, stopping in Iceland and England to round out their trip. Traveling by plane, train, bus, boat, and car created lots of distinctive memories for the whole family. Hull explained, “Each member of my family has a different favorite excursion and I think that speaks volumes to the way we all experience cultures, places, and unique oppor-

September 6, 1895 - March 20, 1974
Mabel G. Sayer read ICH BIN EN AMERIGAANER on the former DIE WUNNERNAAS program on Radio Station WEEU in Reading on May 21, 1944, “I Am An American Day.”
Un blo, sell schteht fer gedreie Leit, immer ewich vereinicht, Schtandhaft un braaf in aller Zeit, awwer yuscht zum Gott erniedricht.
Un en yeders hot in dem Land doch aa was sie heese es Bill vun Recht: Des gheert zu yederm Mann un Fraa vum Pressident
Mir drucke in die Zeiding was die Nei-ichkeede sin: Wann’s gut is adder net so gut, sell kann mer lese datt drin. Un wann mer schwetze zu annanner, dann saage mir was mir meene:

Halt eire Gedanke so wie des, en yeder Mann un Fraa: Amerigaa is in meim Hatz, un mei Hatz in Amerigaa. ***
I AM AN AMERICAN
Today I am an American - what good words these! A land that reaches around the world with a flag of red and white stripes and a starry heaven. It says that we are strong and free, that we had loyal ancestors, whose byword was justice in life and in death. Red stands for the blood our soldiers shed for our freedom. The white stands for the daylight that we see when the sunshine comes through the clouds. And the blue stands for loyal folk always united, loyal and brave, fearing God alone. And then there’s the Bill of Rights that belongs of all, from president to hired man. We print the news in the paper, good or bad. When we talk together we say what we mean. It makes no difference if we do not always agree, whether we’re Catholic, Reformed or Lutheran. We all want to get to heaven and we need suffer no hunger. Of course, it doesn’t come out of thin air, we have to work for it. Those who rule us we elect; and if we’re dissatisfied, we elect new ones. - Well, that is America and is it not a delight? Head held high and shoulders back, and now push out your chest! - Keep your thoughts on this, every man and woman: America is in my heart and my heart is in America!

This Fourth of July season we share with you a poem from the pen of the late Mabel G. Sayer, whom we had the pleasure of knowing in her latter days.
Tune in next week for WATSCH DIE WADDE by Mabel G. Sayer.

tunities.” One thing that stood out to Hull during her stay in Finland is the pace of life compared to ours in America. Finnish people live a slower paced life, spending less time in school, with many employers offering long periods of vacation and breaks being a regular part of the week, if not, the day. A cultural experience Hull noted that her and her family participated in was sauna, a regular part of family time in Finland, regardless of age. Additionally, Hull’s children were brave enough to try out ‘avanto’ or ‘cold plunge’ in a lake that was covered in ice. Hull explained that she will miss not only the many health benefits that sauna provides, but also the connection it allows whether
(Continued From Page 2A) that is within the family or with others in the community. When asked if she has any ideas or strategies from the Finland school system that she is excited to try out at Ephrata, Hull says, “While I don’t think that we’ll be able to implement no shoes, I do hope to find opportunities to get outside more often.” Hull’s research in Finland focuses primarily on the partnership of public libraries and public schools. Although the concept of libraries and schools working together is still in the proposal and planning stages here in Pennsylvania, Hull hopes to find ways to enhance the student experience by partnering with educational and community institutions. Hull culminates her time in Finland sharing, “Overall, the most powerful learning experience came not in a single moment, but through the slow accumulation of insights that emerged from observing, participating, and reflecting.”

Make God Smile
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Psalm 11:7“The Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.”
Last week, we ended with two key attributes in Hebrews chapter 13 that will make God smile. They were, praise and an attitude of gratitude or giving of thanks for all things, or should I say, in all things there is a difference. Continuing in Hebrews, let’s finish the last portion of that verse, “Do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased” (Hebrews 13:16). As a believer, our life activities should exhibit good works. James makes
this clear in chapter 2 verse 18 which says, “But someone will say, ‘You have faith, and I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works ” This verse emphasizes that our faith, if it’s true, will not merely be an intellectual assent to a set of beliefs, but also involve putting those beliefs into practice through our actions and attitudes. Faith and works are inseparable. A faith that does not lead to action, is a dead faith. We need to go out of our way to help anyone and everyone we can. Serving others is a sacrificial act. It requires the sacrifice of our time, treasure and talents.
Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Titus 2:14 says we are to be “zealous for good works.” Good works are not a means to salvation, but an expression of salvation. We are to be careful to always give the Lord Jesus the prominent place when we do good works. Colossians 3:17

says, “Whatever you do in word or deed do everything In the name of the Lord Jesus giving thanks to God the Father through him.” I remember stopping to help someone along the road whose car broke down. I was able to get them going again and they wanted to pay me. I said, “No way! Please, if you want to thank me, read the gospel tract,” that I had on hand. Never just do good works. Speak up. Make a clear testimony about the Lord, otherwise people will just think you’re a good
person, and that’s the last thing you want!
The twin to good works according to Hebrews is “to share.” The scriptures say, “If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, depart in peace, be warmed and filled, but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:15-17). Always make sure your giving is as secret as it can

be, never boast and lose your reward. Matthew 6:3-4 says, “But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.” You will always get a return on your investment in God’s economy.
Luke 6:38, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, and shaken together and running over will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” A stingy Christian is an awful testimony.
Worse than that are Christians in business who always try to beat you out of a buck. Make God smile. Be generous… it’s not yours anyway, and you will give it all up eventually, unless you send it on ahead.
So, to wrap up, if we want God to smile on our life, we need to realize God is righteous and absolutely holy, and as such, wants our life to reflect His character,
truth, righteousness, integrity, honesty, etc. We also said to stay far away from the seven attitudes and actions God hates, as outlined in Proverbs 16. Remember, God is looking throughout all the earth to find those whose hearts are loyal to Him. Caleb wholeheartedly followed the Lord. Finally, we turned to Hebrews 13, which demonstrated how to make God smile. Continually offer the sacrifice of praise, giving of thanks in everything, doing good and sharing. That verse ends with “with such God is well pleased.” One last look at our verse reveals the God’s countenance is focused on those who wholeheartedly follow Him. Psalm 11:7 - “The Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.” Remember what God said to Satan… “Have you considered my servant Job? There is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.” Job made God smile.

All women are invited to this 8-session Bible study. Christine Hoover, a new author to their Bible Studies, will guide them through one of Paul’s most personal letters to discover how God is the ultimate source of strength and sufficiency through troubles, disappointments, and temptations. They will find that God will give people the strength to go on – equipping us to serve Him and compelling us to share the gospel. “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Joyce Evelyn Boyer, 83, of Denver, PA, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 15, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at The Gardens at Stevens.
Joyce was born on April 16, 1942 in West Cocalico Township, PA to the late Luther and Evelyn (Gerhart) Hauck. She married Donald H. Boyer on October 19, 1963, celebrating 61 years of marriage. Together they have three beloved sons, Scott, Todd and Chris, who have given her the greatest joys of her life, her seven grandchildren and two greatgrandsons.
A loving family woman, Joyce deeply cherished her time with her loved ones and always placed family at the center of her life. She treasured holiday gatherings, family picnics, annual beach vacations and camping trips, creating lasting memories filled with love and laughter. Joyce loved nothing more than to see her grandchildren’s smiling faces at Christmas, Easter egg hunts in her backyard, birthday celebrations, various sporting events and cherished family vacation time in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Her grandchildren will always remember her famous buttered noodles, delicious home cooked meals and spending time at their home, a place where the cousins always found laughter, fun and created new and lasting memories. Joyce also deeply valued time with her extended family, especially her nieces and nephews, whose company she adored. Joyce often stated that family was the most important thing to her. Her kind and gentle spirit,

years, Joyce worked as a seamstress in the garment industry to support her family while raising her three sons. Later, she worked at the local farmer’s market, where she enjoyed meeting new people and forming lasting friendships.

selfless nature of always putting others first, and unwavering devotion to others leaves behind a legacy of love that will live on through her children, grandchildren and the special people she called friends and family.

As part of her commitment to service through her Church, she was an active member of the Willing Workers, a group devoted to supporting the community and helping those in need. She especially loved spending time with her church friends, gathering at Easter to make their famous homemade candy, a tradition she cherished with friends that she considered as close as family.
Joyce gave her time generously to her community as a member of the Denver Lioness Club and a volunteer at the Denver Fair. She always embraced the fellowship of coming together with others to nurture and support the local community.
In her spare time, Joyce enjoyed crafting handmade cards for friends and family, and she took joy in collecting angels and miniature piano music boxes, both symbolic of her love and appreciation of faith and music.

* On August 18, 1992, Boston Celtics forward Larry Bird retired at the age of 35, explaining that “the last couple of years have been very tough on me, on my back and on my body. It was very hard to deal with, day in and day out.” He has remained involved with the NBA in other roles, however, to the present day.
* On August 19, 2011, the “West Memphis Three” -- Damien Echols,
Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley -- were released from prison after serving 18 years for the murders of three young Arkansas boys, under the rarely used Alford plea, which allowed them to maintain their innocence while acknowledging that prosecutors still possessed sufficient evidence to convict them.
* On August 20, 2000, the peregrine falcon, known as the world’s fastest bird
for its speed of up to 200 mph, was removed from America’s endangered species list after a little more than three decades. A ban on the pesticide DDT was widely credited for the bird’s resurgence.
* On August 21, 1920, Christopher Robin Milne was born to author A.A. Milne and his wife, Daphne. The boy would later be immortalized in his father’s books “Winnie-the-Pooh” and “The House at Pooh Corner.”
* On August 22, 1962, French president Charles de Gaulle, along with his wife, survived one of several assassination attempts against him thanks to the superior suspension system of the presidential automobile, known as “La Déesse” (The Goddess), which allowed de Gaulle’s
chauffeur to accelerate out of a front-wheel skid to safety.
* On August 23, 1945, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Marcario Garcia was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman, becoming the first Mexican national to receive it, for singlehandedly clearing two German machine gun nests even after receiving multiple wounds.
* On August 24, 1814, an iconic portrait (actually a copy) of George Washington was removed from its frame at the White House to prevent its theft by British troops. Later, first lady Dolley Madison would take somewhat dramatic credit for supervising the act.

* The first staplers were invented in the 18th century for King Louis XV of France, though the word “stapler” wasn’t commonly used until 1901. These early devices were cumbersome and often required force to operate, with some even needing a hammer or mallet.
* Animals with smaller bodies and faster metabolism see in slow motion.
* Occupational therapy techniques date to 100 B.C., when a Greek physician named Asclepiades used them to treat mental illness.
* The tradition of playing loud music at an Irish wake originated with the belief that it would ward off evil spirits. Wakes also provided the opportunity to watch over the deceased to see if they would awaken.
* The Firefox logo isn’t a fox, but a red panda.
* If your hat falls off during a tennis match, your opponent has the option to declare it a “hindrance” and redo the stroke.
* The temperature of a shooting star is around 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
* “Crab mentality” refers to the “If I can’t have it, neither can you” line of thinking, due to the fact that when a crab in a bucket attempts to escape, its fellow crabs pull it down.
* A flute is technically any open tube that one blows into to produce sound -even, for example, an empty Coke bottle!
* Squirrels play a role in reforestation by forgetting some of the buried nuts and seeds they store, which then sprout into new trees.
* Acrylic nails were invented in 1957 by a dentist experimenting with how to create an artificial fingernail to protect his thumb after he’d accidentally cut it.
* The Inuit people used goggles made from bone, wood or other hard material to protect their eyes from UV rays more than 2,000 years ago, designed to cover the eye while leaving a small slit to see through. The slit narrowed and sharpened the wearer’s field of vision while protecting their eyes from snow glare.
* In 1980, Detroit gave Saddam Hussein a key to the city out of recognition of donations he had made to local churches.
