They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion;

who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that people owe many of the great contributions to society.

In “Quiet,” Susan Cain argues that people dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much you lose in doing so.

She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture.

She also introduces you to successful introverts—from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Passionately argued, impeccably researched, and

* Honey has amazing properties, and one of them is its antiseptic powers. You can use it on pimples, even. Just a tiny dab will help keep bacteria responsible for breakouts from taking over.

* Here’s a workout tip: Rotate among a few pairs of running shoes to get the best life out of them. Rotating gives them a chance to dry out between wearings, and runners who practice this have a 39% lower chance of injury, according to a Luxembourg research firm.

* Got poison ivy? The maddening itch might find relief from coffee grounds or a cooled cuppa. It contains anti-inflammatories.

* “Lemon juice can bring out the flavor of mushrooms. I keep a little spray bottle that I found in the travel section of the drugstore to keep lemon juice accessible in the kitchen. I find it’s good for all kinds of things, like avocadoes and apples. I spray the cut side to keep them from browning. It’s also great for salad greens.”

* “The liners from cereal boxes work really well to store pies in the freezer. They can be stapled shut.” -Y.L. in Indiana

* “Polish wall tiles in the bathroom using car wax. They will repel water really well. Just be sure that you cover the floor before you apply any wax. You do not want to polish your tub, as that is a safety hazard for sure!” -- M.W. in Missouri

* “Check your mower to see if you are cutting your lawn to the optimum height. Generally, cutting grass to two and a half inches will allow it to retain more moisture, requiring less watering.” -- O.F. in Alabama

* Want to make that summer at-home pedicure last? Don’t skip the base coat or a UV topcoat. The base coat will allow the color to adhere evenly and better. Then the topcoat will protect the color from the sun while giving it a little extra shine.

* Did you know you can curl your hair with straws?

Wind sections of damp hair around a plastic straw and secure the ends with a bobby pin. Allow to dry in the sun or use a hair dryer on low heat. Remove and spritz with hair spray.

* Remove all of the air from a plastic storage bag with a drinking straw. Slip

the straw into the bag and close as much as possible. Then suck any air out through the straw, and quickly pull out and close in a single motion. Your leftovers will stay fresh longer, and foods may stack better in the freezer.

* “If you need a long, straight line, never fear. Grab a ball of yarn or string, and cut what you need. Then

rub the whole length over a piece of chalkboard chalk. With a partner, you can hold the string taut and snap it down, like a rubber band. It will leave a line of chalk behind!” -- L.S. in Minnesota

* The best way to get a bloodstain out of clothing is by dousing the stain with hydrogen peroxide and washing as usual. For clay stains, you absolutely must

have a Fels-Naptha bar. It looks like a bar of soap, and you wet the material and rub in the soap. It’s magical. This, coming from a softball mom whose daughter loves to slide. -- A.A. in Florida

* Add these to the list of items to eliminate the odor of cooking cabbage: a heel of bread, a whole walnut, or a pinch of baking soda.

* “Before I go to the beach, I freeze an ice-cube tray full of lemonade. Then, we use the cubes in our travel cups. It keeps the lemonade cool, and as it melts (which tends to be quickly), it doesn’t water down the drink.” -K.H. in South Carolina

WADDE (Conclusion)

From “Der Schtiwwelgnecht” Clarence G. Reitnauer

This ECK is the conclusion of the Dutch column which appeared on May 18, 1988 in the Pennsburg, Montgomery County “Town And Country,” a weekly newspaper. It has been edited for the last twenty years by our dear friend, Clarence G. Reitnauer of Siessholswill. Last week we presented part one. In this ECK, we are calling upon all our faithful “Deitsch” word detectives to come to our rescue!!!

TURKEY BUZZARD - Ludervoggel adder Ooshaahne? TO HUSK CORN - Welschkann baschde adder Welschkann scheele?

PEAR - Bier adder Beer?

STRANGE - Fremm adder umbekannt?

LANTERN - Lutzer adder Ladann? ***

Having come this far with this ECK, we hope you have last week’s ECK handy, which lists the remaining words which “der Schtiwwelgnecht” printed in his Dutch column on May 18.

We know that many of our readers are very interested in our Dutch vocabulary. We would like to urge all of our readers to examine all of these words most carefully and let us know in writing which of these words are known to you

In the case of nouns (Bungert, Frock, Eechhaas, Nommidaag, etc.) please let us know the gender of the noun. That is, do you use the word with ES or DIE or DER with the noun? (We say, for example, DIE Hand, DER Fuuss, ES Aag.)

Should you use a Dutch word which is not given, please give us that word.

In some cases, we suspect that you will use all the Dutch words given BUT with different meanings. For example, in the case of Dierli or Dor, I would say that these are two different kinds of gates or doors. What do you think? The same may be true of Schwamm and Wiss, and of Zuwwer and Schtenner, and of Schipp and Schaufel. It also seems to me that schtoppe and uff-heere might also have different usages.

In the case of the Dutch words for BABY, SMALL HOUSE, TOP WAGON, and FATHER, we’re pretty sure that you readers will have additional Dutch words which “Schtiwwelgnecht” does not give. Please send us your words.

Through the years, we have encountered most of the Dutch words “Schtiwwelgnecht” gives, but Wutzli, Welschkann scheele and Top Welliche are new to us. How many of you readers recognize these words and use them? From my grandparents, I learned Wutz and Wutzli and Welschkann baschde. Is it possible that another spelling for Welliche would be Weggelche, which would mean “a small wagon?”

Turning to the English word “gift,” Gschenk would be the proper German word, Bressent would be the English loan word, and does not Kindli come from the Dutch word for Christmas present, es Grischtkindli?

I guess we could go on and on with this, but we prefer to turn the investigation over to all you Dutch word detectives out there in SHOPPING NEWS LAND. Please examine these words very carefully and write us and tell us what comes to your mind as you do so. Der Schtiwwelgnecht has given us much “food for thought.” Let’s see how much we can elaborate upon his list.

Book clubs can nurture social connections and deeper engagement with others dealing with brain changes. This book club allows people with brain changes to be lifelong learners and engage with others on a brain change/dementia journey. Make God Smile

Author: Wenger

Scripture: Psalm 11:7“The Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.”

We are continuing with our theme “Make God Smile.” Last time, we began looking at how a verse in Hebrews gives us four ways to make God smile. So far, the key ways we can make God smile is Obedience. Caleb demonstrated this because scripture states; he wholeheartedly followed the Lord. We closed with the sacrifice of Praise. Please note one word that is a very important word about praise that we didn’t discuss last week, and that word is Continually. Hebrews

13:15-16, “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.”

The word continually emphasizes the continuous or persistent nature of something, rather than a temporary or fleeting occurrence. The Greek word is made up of two words; Dia, which means through, and Pantos, which means everything or all. So, we are to praise God through all and for everything or in all things. If we are unwilling to praise God in everything, you will end up like Nebuchadnezzar, who didn’t realize it’s God who sets up and brings down rulers. There are really only two options; either you think it’s your ability or God’s grace. Nebuchadnezzar said that The king spoke, saying, “Is not this great Babylon that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty” (Daniel 4:30)?

The Bible says while the words were still in his mouth, judgment fell. He was driven from his kingdom and disposed of his power. The king eventually got it right, but it wasn’t until after 7 years passed and then, “At that same time my reason returned to me.” He goes on to say, “Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven.” A person who is short on praise is long on self-reliance and pride. Praise the Lord continually in all and through all.

Returning to Hebrews 13 we see yet another key to making God smile and that is “giving thanks to His name.” Praise and thanksgiving are sister and brother in God’s economy, although different, they are often found together. Once again like praise, the self-sufficient have little use for a thankful attitude. The believer of all people should be thankful. The attitude of gratitude should be a way of life. When we go out to a restaurant, I love to see

people give thanks before a meal. With most people though, there isn’t even the thought of thanksgiving. How foolish. It would only take three weeks to empty every grocery store in the United States. We don’t have to have the blessings of God. I remember Billy Graham saying, “For some reason God’s hand of blessing is on my life and ministry. He can take it off any time.” We need to, as the old hymn says, “count your many blessings, name them one by one, count your many blessings see what God has done!” Psalm 107:21, “Oh that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!”

If you want to share your faith, one of the best and easiest ways is to thank and praise God publically for his blessings. Blessings abound everywhere! It’s only right that we praise the Lord for the many ways He blesses us. 1 Chronicles 16:8, “Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make

known his deeds among the peoples!” We can even give thanks in and for difficulties. Unless you are Job, it can always be worse. That is praiseworthy. Check out Job. I doubt if you are there, yet whatever your trial, giving thanks for all things is the will of God. Scripture says so - 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Giving thanks is God’s Rx for anxiety. It will refocus our attention on God’s goodness and His plan for our life. Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” If we want God’s smile upon our lives, thanksgiving is one of the key attitudes to have. Next week, we continue on with one more way to make God smile from Hebrews… “To do good and to share.”
