Library Offers AAC Devices

tative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. These tools are designed to support communication for patrons who are nonspeaking, have difficultly speaking, or speak a language other than English.
“We’re excited to introduce these communication devices to our community,” said Carolyn Reiste, Executive Director of the Library. “They offer a chance for families to explore assistive technology, especially if they’re considering a more permanent AAC device for a loved one.”
The two new devices can be checked out like a book, allowing patrons to test them at home before investing in more complex tools or systems. These devices can act as an early introduction to assistive communication
for individuals of all ages – and are especially useful for individuals with autism, adults recovering from a stroke, or those living with dementia.
Also new to the Library’s offerings are Yoto Players, screenfree audio devices for kids that play stories, music, and educational content using physical cards. Beloved by parents and educators alike, Yoto Players encourage independent, screenfree learning, and imaginative play.
These items – and many others – are available to borrow with a library card, supporting the Library’s mission to respond to evolving community needs. “The goal of ‘Library of Things’ is to extend what libraries have always done – share
resources that enrich lives,” Reiste said. “Whether it’s a hotspot to stay connected, a Yoto player to delight a child, or a communication device that opens new doors, we’re here to make life a little easier and more joyful for our patrons.” For more information and to browse available items, visit lititzlibrary.org or stop by the Lititz Public Library.
Help Calm First-Day Jitters
The first day of school can be an exciting time, especially for children who have never before attended school. But even youngsters excited about the first day may also experience some jitters. Such nerves are normal, and parents can help kids calm those jitters in various ways.
• Talk about the first day as it approaches. A child’s first day of school is a milestone, and parents may do various things to commemorate the occasion. The excitement

leading up to the first day can spark kids’ enthusiasm, but it also may lead to some anxiety about the unknown. Parents can quell those fears by discussing the first day as it approaches. Explain why the first day is so special, encouraging youngsters to share their feelings. If kids express fears about their first day, parents can explain they felt similarly on their first day of school but quickly adjusted.
• Let kids choose their own clothes. Parents may be tempted to buy special
outfits for their children for the first day of school. But kids who are jittery about their first day may calm down if allowed to choose their own attire for the big day. A favorite Tshirt or outfit might be just the thing to comfort kids feeling a bit nervous about their first day of school.
• Get a head start on your morning routine. As summer winds down, begin acclimating children to the morning routine they can expect when the school year begins. One to two
weeks before the first day of school, start waking children up when they will need to be up for school. Kids who are accustomed to the morning routine may be more calm on their first day of school because of their familiarity with their new schedule. Going cold turkey on the first day of school may make kids less enthusiastic about attending school.
• Attend school orientation events and plan some play dates in advance of the first day. Seeing familiar faces might make kids forget all

about their jitters when they arrive at school on the first day. Inquire about school orientation events and attend as many of those sessions as possible. If encouraged to do so, take kids along so they can meet prospective classmates. Arrange for play dates with those classmates in advance of the first day so kids have a few recognizable faces their own age come the first day of school.
• Start the day off on the right foot. The night before the first day of school, make sure kids’ outfits are clean, their supplies are packed and ready to go and their lunch is made. The less parents have to rush around on the morning of the first day of school, the calmer kids are likely to be.
Assessments such as quizzes and exams help educators recognize areas where students are excelling and where they might need a little extra help. In addition to tests in the classroom, high schoolers generally take standardized testing for state or provincial assessment purposes.
Testing may come easier to some students than others, but having solid study techniques can improve students’ performance on a wide range of exams. In fact, research by Stanford scholars, whose data was published in Psychological Science, found that applying a strategic approach to studying helped college students improve their exam scores by an average of onethird of a letter grade.
The testing preparation resource PrepScholar says it is important to build and maintain strong study habits to help students avoid undue stress and lastminute cramming. The following are seven techniques that may help foster good study skills.
1. Find value in the lessons.
Many students lament that what they learn in school just isn’t relevant in daily
life. That can make the subject matter feel less important and uninteresting. Finding value in what one is learning and seeing how it can be applied outside of the classroom may make a student more inclined to learn and retain information.
2. Avoid distractions.
Study time is time to take a break from social media, video games and any other distractions that can pull a student away from studying. Constantly checking
notifications can interrupt thoughts and make it hard to learn the material.
3. Establish a study schedule.
Develop a system and a schedule for studying. Students should establish a fixed habit of studying each day or week — whatever is best for him or her. Over time, studying will become routine.
4. Establish dedicated study spots.
Students should locate places that work best for them as study and homework stations. Certain individuals may need the quiet of a library or a bookstore. Others may do best with the hum of conversation around them or in a group. There’s no right or wrong study spot. Maintaining consistency will help the mind associate a place with studying.
5. Use grades as benchmarks and motivators.
Blaming a teacher for a poor grade won’t get a student anywhere. Rather, grades should indicate how well one is learning the material, and in turn, the effectiveness of students’ studying habits. Students can tweak their habits if they find their grades are not where they want them to be.
6. Rephrase material.
Textbook language can be dry and unappealing. Students can try putting the
material into their own words or rephrase passages to make them easier to remember and recall. Similarly, teaching or sharing the material with another person also may improve retention.
7. Make a formula sheet. Depending on the subject, having a sheet with shortcuts, formulas or diagrams can put the material into smaller bursts of information that are easier to digest. Along this same vein, writing information down can help improve recall.
The Benefits Of Learning A Foreign Language
Adults undoubtedly recall their school days when schedules included a class devoted to foreign languages. Some students embrace foreign language classes, while others may question their value. Those
in the latter camp may be surprised to learn just how much they benefit from studying a foreign language.
Foreign Languages And Long-Term Cognitive Health
Dementia might not be foremost on the minds of schoolaged youngsters, but their foreign language class could be delaying its onset by a significant margin. A 2010 study published in the peerreviewed journal Neur
ology found that bilingual patients with probable Alzheimer’s disease reported the onset of symptoms 5.1 years later than monolingual patients. Authors of the study concluded that lifelong bilingualism confers protection against the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, which underscores the value of learning a foreign language as a young person and maintaining that knowledge throughout adulthood.
Foreign Languages And Attention Span
A recent study from Microsoft found that the average attention span is now eight seconds, which marks a significant decline since 2000, when the average attention span was 12 seconds. Researchers behind the report suggest the prevalence of screens, particularly the use of multiple screens at once, has led to that decline. But
bilingual individuals may be able to buck that trend.
Researchers at the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham suggest that bilingualism could lead to better sustained attention and attentional monitoring, thus improving students’ ability to remain focused and block out distractions.
Foreign Languages And Multi-Tasking
Most adults likely need
greater ability to multitask than monolingual children. The NIH study utilized a switching task to gauge monolingual and bilingual children’s ability to pay attention, plan, organize, and strategize. Bilingual children were faster at switching than their monolingual counterparts, which could set them up to be more successful in a world that has increasingly valued the
Did You Know?
A growing emphasis on STEM has emerged within the educational sector over the last decade or more. Schools and students have put forth extraordinary effort into fostering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in curriculums and through personal pursuits. Although there are many proponents of STEM classes and careers, many people feel that creative endeavors, namely arts education, have been largely pushed aside in favor of STEM. But as evidence that artsbased learning has a positive effect on all aspects of education continues to mount — including improving students’ test scores on the SAT as well as in math and science — many educators are reintroducing art in schools. For example, prior to 2017, Mann Elementary School in Detroit had not offered art classes in 20 years. By 2017, some art and music classes had been restored. Students in Lebanon, Pennsylvania also are learning the importance of the arts through the STEAM concept. First implemented by the Rhode Island School of Design, the “A” in STEAM stands for “Arts.” STEAM encourages students to think not only analytically but creatively, essentially blending the best of math and science with the arts. A recent study from PayScale.com even notes that graduates obtaining art degrees from certain schools can expect healthy returns on their educational investments. This furthers the push for a reintroduction of arts education, as it indicates that a career in the arts can be a potentially lucrative pursuit.
An Evening With The New Holland Band
The New Holland Band’s Concerts in the Parks Initiative continues with the second concert in the series being held on Sunday, August 17. Grater Community Park on Cocalico Street in Ephrata. Lawn chairs and blankets are recommended. The performance will include several tunes from the Stauss family including “TrischTratsch Polka” and “Emperor Waltz,” Henry Filmore’s march “His Honor,” and J.C. “Divine Prospective”
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Psalm 13:6 “I will sing unto the Lord for He has dealt bountifully with me.”
You would think from this verse that everything is going well in David’s life, but we see from the other verses in the chapter this is not the case. Verse one of this chapter gives the context of David’s situation; “How long, O Lord? Will you forget me, forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” Verse two goes on to say “How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? How long will my enemy be exalted over me?”
Let’s look at David’s life with Saul the King. Saul became jealous of David and was afraid that David would someday usurp his kingship. Saul sought to put David to death for that very reason. Two times Saul hurled a spear at him. David became a fugitive, running for his life. He spent years hiding from Saul in the wilderness, being chased by Saul’s army. David was anointed to be king after Saul’s disobedience with Agag. It was nearly fifteen years after David’s anointing until he became king and yet David remained faithful to Saul as God’s anointed king.
How can David say, “I will sing unto the Lord, for He has dealt bountifully with me” in the midst of so much trouble? The answer is that David had a divine prospective. Vance Havner used to say, “You can’t be optimistic with a misty optic.” One way to clear our lens and maintain a divine perspective is to review
God’s faithfulness of the past. When David faced Goliath, he remembered how, as a shepherd, God protected him from the bear and the lion. “Your servant was tending his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a sheep from the flock, I went out after it and attacked it, and rescued the sheep from its mouth; and when it rose up against me, I grabbed it by its mane and struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised
Philistine will be like one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.” And David said, “The Lord who saved me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear, He will save me from the hand of this Philistine.” (1st Samuel 17:3436). David could face Goliath because he looked back to God’s deliverance, provision and protection.
Another way David kept the divine prospective is trusting God’s sovereign plan. Now, David is king
and he will continue to face other giants. David never seized the opportunity to take the throne by force, although he was anointed to be the next king. He waited for God’s time. Remember when Saul went into the cave alone and David was there in the shadows with his men; his comrades said God has delivered Saul into your hands and wanted to slay Saul. David would not raise his hand against God’s anointed. He waited, and when it was time, David became king by God’s hand, not his The final way David kept the divine prospective is to realize you can’t deliver yourself by your own strength. We have to know where our deliverance comes from. David said in Psalm 33:16, 17, “The king is not saved by a mighty army; a warrior is not rescued by great strength. A horse is a false hope for victory; nor does it rescue anyone by its great strength.” God alone should be our hope. Few
places in scripture is this better illustrated than with Gideon. He started out with 32,000 soldiers and God said, you have too many, so he dismissed 22,000 cowards. God said you still have too many. Remember, they were about to fight approximately 100,000 Midianites. God said that Israel would believe they delivered themselves if their army was large, so Gideon released another 21,700 incompetent soldiers, and that left 300 that were committed. They went into battle with torches and trumpets and 300 men. God sent confusion among their enemies and turned them against themselves, defeating the great army. So, in summary, keep the divine prospective by remembering God’s faithfulness, trusting His sovereign plan and know it’s God’s power alone that will deliver us.
Next week, we will return to our “Make God Smile” series.
