Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Television host Mike Rowe is starting a new TV series called “Return The Favor” and he will be traveling across the country in search of remarkable people making a difference in their communities. Akron resident Carol Stark was recently honored at Cocalico High School’s stadium when the show filmed her in front of hundreds of friends, family and those who have been impacted by her selfless acts of caring over many years. Mike Rowe himself went and picked Carol up for this surprise event in which the Ephrata Band played and cheerleaders from Cocalico and Ephrata cheered her arrival. The highlights of the evening were the presentation of red roses by those she has impacted the most, as well as the creation of the Carol Stark Foundation, which received a $50,000 donation from the show. Carol is shown holding her plaque as Mike Rowe and guests celebrate her achievements. The show will air in a couple of months according to the producers.

Great O Antiphons Special Service
On Sunday, December 17, the third Sunday in Advent, Bergstrasse Evangelical Lutheran Church, 9 Hahnstown Road, Ephrata, will celebrate the Great O Antiphons with a special service beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Antiphons are a set of medieval refrains from the 12th century Christian Church used before and after the singing of Mary’s Song, the Magnificat, on each of the seven days before Christmas. Each refrain begins with “O” and a separate title given to Christ in the Old Testament reflecting Israel’s yearning for the coming of the Messiah. John Mason Neale later translated the refrains into the hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” Following the singing of each Antiphon by a Cantor, the service will feature readings from the book “The Mystery of Holy Night” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Each reading will be followed with a hymn by the congregation and music by the Festival Choir and the Joyous Praise Handbells. Seven banners depicting the symbols for the Antiphons will be hung in the sanctuary: the Menorah for Wisdom, the Burning Bush for Law, the Rose of Bethlehem for Hope, the Key of David for the Redeemer, the Rising Sun for the Light of the World, the Crown for the Prince of Peace and the Creche for Emmanuel. All are invited to this service.
