International Essay Contest Winners Pediatric First Aid Offered

SATuRDAy, OCTOBER 10 The Lititz American Legion Riders from Post 56 will host the Annual Fall Foliage Ride and 3rd Annual Post Pig Roast. Registration is from 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. at the Legion. There is a cost. Proceeds from the ride will benefit the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors, Inc. For more information, call 717-626-9906.

Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese The Ephrata Language Arts Department is pleased to announce that Brittany Contres (right) and Meg (Margaret) Swenson (left) were named semi-finalists in the International Fountainhead writing contest sponsored by the Ayn Rand Society. Their essays were chosen from a field of over 2,500 essays submitted from all over the world. The Fountainhead is a required reading in the Advanced Placement Language and Composition course, where students study author’s styles of writing and analyze the effectiveness of an author’s argument. Their essays were judged on both style and content. Judges looked for writing that was clear, articulate and logically organized. Winning essays demonstrated an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of the novel. The girls will receive a cash award.

WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital is offering a Pediatric First Aid training course, in conjunction with the American Heart Association, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, at the WellSpan Cocalico Health Center, 63 West Church Street, Stevens. The course teaches the general principles of first aid for medical and injury emergencies. It is designed to meet the requirements of childcare workers. There is a fee for this course, which includes instruction book. Pre-registration is required.
