Shopping News Photos by Jeffrey L. White and Crystle Eby This year the Ephrata Fair celebrated its 100th year by “Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Future.” This long-standing tradition all began in July of 1919 when four men gathered at the Cloister Club to plan a celebration for local veterans marking the one-year anniversary of the end of the Great War. Today, the fair has become a five-day extravaganza, not only filling downtown Ephrata, but also encompassing Ephrata Grater Park. This year a Welcome Home Ceremony was held just before the start of fair week to share the long history of the Ephrata Fair and to also pay tribute to all of the military heroes who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of others. Unfortunately, the much-anticipated parade had to be cancelled due to threatening weather. Although this put a slight damper on the festivities, there was still a large turnout during the full week of events, games, contests, food stands and rides. Shown in the photos (clockwise from top left): the midway filled with tasty treats and all the classic fair rides; a little girl patiently waiting for her turn with the water gun; a view of some of the beautiful flower arrangements at the Pioneer Fire Company; a child and her mother fishing for a prize; a woman playing Skee-Ball during Senior Citizens’ Day; guest speaker General Thomas Hobbins addressing the crowd at the Welcome Home Ceremony; the flag procession with the Red Rose Volunteer Honor Guard; and a sheep who enjoys being in the spotlight.
