Each year, nearly 40,000 high school students from across the country enter to win a share of the $2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the VFW’s Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition. The VFW established the Voice of Democracy program (VOD) in 1947 to provide students grades nine to twelve the opportunity to express themselves in regards to
democratic ideas and principles. This year the post had entries from Brownstone LCCTC and Ephrata High School. District 9 picked Ella Schnoor as the first place winner. The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. Other national scholarships range from

Pulsera Project Helps Those In Need Book Discussion Series

Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese This holiday season, the Cocalico High School Spanish Club held a charity fundraiser called “The Pulsera Project” at the Middle School and High School. The Spanish Club sold handmade Nicaraguan bracelets in order to help poverty-stricken Nicaraguan people. The Spanish Club would like to recognize Mr. Jeff Bertz for his generous purchase of $200 worth of bracelets! Also, a special thanks to Sra. Shearer and the Middle School students! All funds raised were donated to the Nicaraguan people who made the bracelets. The Club would like to thank their supporters for helping them raise $1060.75 this year! Explore the world through the book discussion group Exploring, Growing Together at Lititz United Methodist Church located at 201 East Market Street in Lititz. The 2015-2016 book discussion series will continue to help stretch our faith and beliefs. This series will help you explore your beliefs in a safe discussion environment without judgment. Linda Van Til, Certified Lay Minister will lead the discussion with the books “Messianic Judaism Is Not Christianity” by former Pastor Stan Telchin, whose congregation consisted of Jews and Gentiles, from all walks of life and Rabbi Jonathan Bernis, “A Rabbi Looks at Jesus of Nazareth” starting Thursday, March 3, continuing Thursdays, March 10 and 17. Enter church property from the lower level parking lot through double glass entrance doors; signs are posted for direction to Room 103, next to the Children’s Church room. We meet from 11:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. You will need to obtain a copy of the books to read before the weeks of discussion. Bring a bag lunch to eat while we discuss, if you choose.
