Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese The Akron Volunteer Fire Company held its annual Open House last week under sunny skies, and area residents had the opportunity to meet first responders who serve in the various roles from fire fighting to ambulance crews. A selection of apparatus were also on display to tour, including the old pumper from 1925 that once served the Borough. There were life saving learning stations including a smoke house and a brand new digital fire extinguisher station where children and adults could learn fire suppression techniques using state of the art laser driven extinguishers on a LED driven digital flame panel, as shown being tried by a mother and daughter. Free food and kids fire helmets rounded out the fun and informative evening that was well attended.
New Life Skills Program Students in the Life Skills program at Ephrata Area School District will soon be offered a new program to help prepare for life outside the classroom. Project Build a Better Future will teach students ages 18 to 21 how to live independently in various settings and is scheduled to launch for the 2015-2016 school year. A classroom at EHS@Washington is being converted to an apartment where students who need to
focus on transition will be able to have hands-on experiences with cooking, cleaning, and living life independently. In addition, students will be taught about the use of public transportation, work and volunteer opportunities, and resources available to them in the Ephrata community. Many students will be able to intern in the community and eventually work independently. Over the last several years, Susan Summers-Steffy, Ephrata Area School District Coordinator of Student Support Services, saw a need for a program like this. She is
very excited to see the vision come to life. “Our desire is to build a program that will assist students in the Life Skills program to prepare for the real world with community support while still having the safety net of the school environment. We believe students have the potential to be a productive member of society while feeling a sense of pride and happiness with their life. We want to bring together all parts of the students’ community to help them meet their personal goals for the future. This new program and our community support will make this
a reality,” said Mrs. SummersSteffy. Involvement in Project Build a Better Future also offers a great opportunity for Ephrata area businesses and community organizations. Students involved in the program will be seeking work internships, volunteer opportunities, and more. In addition, items are still needed to furnish the Project Build a Better Future classroom. To learn about donation opportunities or how to partner with Project Build a Better Future, please contact Mrs. Summers-Steffy at S_Steffy@easdpa.org.
