Move over God; now there are two of us.
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Job 40:8“Would you indeed annul My judgment? Would you condemn Me that you may be justified?”
At times, we will experience suffering, pain, loss, trials, testing and death. Our reaction to these times will reveal the strength of our faith. We can be bitter or better as a result of these trials. It’s our mission to acknowledge God’s sovereignty, demonstrate our faith and practice obedience
In Job’s test, he demonstrated all three. Job acknowledged and accepted God’s sovereignty in adversity. Job 2:10 says, “Shall we accept good from
God and not adversity?” Job acknowledged God’s will can involve adversity and still be good. In fact, Job implies that we will have frequent trouble in this life. He states, “As sparks fly upward so man is born unto trouble” (Job 5:7). Job’s life is proof that adversity is a part of the believer’s life, especially the faithful ones. Job didn’t even have the New Testament revelation we have today. Think of the blessing we have by knowing these truths; “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” “And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope” (Romans 5:3, 4).
Job demonstrated his faith when he said, “Though He slay me yet will I trust Him” (Job
13:15). Think of his losses, all of his children, all of his possessions, most of his servants, his health; he endured, most likely, the worst pain any human ever physically suffered, except for the Lord on the cross. He suffered humiliation, criticism and condemnation from his friends, evil advice from his wife. Job’s faith was severely tested. The Devil asserted that Job loved God because God’s blessing on his life and if these things were taken, his faith would go with them. The Devil also said that God put a hedge of protection around Job, which He did. Apparently, this wasn’t the first time the Devil tried to destroy Job. That which is authentic, can and will be tested.
Isaiah 48:10 says, “Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.”
James said, “You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.” The foundation of endurance is faith tested in trials
He practiced obedience
in that he did NOT curse God as Satan said he would. In all this suffering, Job did not curse God. Even his wife submitted to the flesh and Devil when she said, “Do you still hold firm your integrity? Why don’t you curse God and die!” (Job 2:9). She knew that Job’s life was full of integrity and uprightness. She saw this evidenced throughout Job’s entire life, yet, she too condemned him. This is an example of how when in the throes of trials and suffering you are driven to depend only on Christ and His promises not others. All others may likely fail you. Somehow suffering and trouble are good and healthy for obedience. Think of it, even The Son Of God learned obedience through the things that He suffered. “Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered” (Hebrews 5:8).
Job had questions and was distraught with God but he was victorious through these trials.

Each year, the third Sunday in June is a time to pay homage to fathers and the millions of other men who have stepped into the role of father. While it may seem as though Father’s Day has been around forever, it didn’t become a nationally recognized holiday in the United States until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed Joint Resolution 187 into law.
Many thank Sonora Smart Dodd for making Father’s Day happen. In 1909, while attending a Mother’s Day sermon in church, Dodd felt fathers were equally deserving of praise. To honor her own father, a Civil War veteran and widower who raised six children alone, Dodd petitioned for a Father’s Day on June 5th (the anniversary of her father’s death) in her native Spokane, Wash. The celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June. Another account says Grace Golden Clayton came up with the idea for a Father’s Day in 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia. Clayton was inspired to celebrate fathers after 361 local men perished in a deadly mine explosion.
Historians say that Father’s Day may even be an older idea. St. Joseph’s Day, which was celebrated each year on March 19 in Catholic nations of Europe since the medieval era, and later elsewhere around the world, commemorates Joseph, the husband of Mary and father figure to Jesus. It was said that Joseph should be held up as the ideal example of fatherhood.

FOLK MEDICINE
Collected by Alice Ziemer Adamstown, PA (Conclusion) OLD REMEDIES
Years ago a woman in this section is said to have cured a severe case of pneumonia by applying pancakes baked with as many kinds of tea leaves as she could find, on the chest of her child. - To keep a child from getting whooping cough, a strip of leather from a pig’s hide was tied around the child’s neck when asleep. This had to be done without waking him.

There was once a farmer boy, Hearty, small and happy. His hair was golden curls, His eyes blue-grey.
He works and plays in the fields, He swims and fishes and learns.
The years pass by quickly, He grows into a big man.
The whole world is in pain, Unrest is great.
Perhaps the devil is on the loose.
Early on a lovely Sunday morning, The Japanese are flying there,
High over our Hawaii, One can’t get them all.
They damage and destroy, They sink our ships.
Thousands are killed.
The Japanese are good marksmen.
Our land is now at war, We have to fight now.
The enemy must be beaten, They were - yes, in the last war.
The boy from the farm also wants to help, He enlists in the Navy.
He goes far away overseas, And he stays there forever.
He rests there on a small island.
With water all about.
The palm leaves rustle slowly,
The hot air makes them limp.
The war is now over for him, He did his fighting.
A gold star hangs in the window
For our farmer boy.
We still have to fight, The world has no rest yet.
We hope all will be right, And happiness with it. ***
With ES WAAR EMOHL EN BAUERSBU we bring to an end our month-long Alice Ziemer Brice Festival. We are grateful to David Luthy in Aylmer, Ontario, Canada, and to Maude Rudy and Catherine Morrow for making this festival possible.
It is quite clear that ES WAAR EMOHL EN BAUERSBU was written after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and before the conclusion of hostilities in 1945. Even though this is the last of the six poems sent to us by David Luthy, we are hopeful that Catherine Morrow will find additional Dutch poems in Alice’s papers.
Can any of our Adamstown readers identify our “Bauersbu?” It would be fitting to find out who our unknown sailer was. He must have been a very fine young man, whom Alice had known when he was yet a child.
Many countries are fighting,

Adamstown Area Library is offering free swim passes for the summer.
The Adamstown Area Library is partnering with Adamstown, Denver, and Reamstown Pools to offer swim passes this summer through its ‘Museum Pass’ program. One pass is good for a family or group of two adults and four children, and they can be used during the pools’ operating hours this summer (which started on Memorial Day weekend).
Please be aware that the pools can be closed to the
public for members only or private events, so families should call before visiting to ensure that the pass is valid for that day.
This partnership with the Cocalico area pools is only one of our ‘Museum Pass’ offerings. They partner with a wide variety of venues to offer similar experiences. The passes can be placed on hold or picked up at the Adamstown Area Library’s Circulation Desk during library hours. Adult cardholders, 18 years and
older, in good standing, are eligible to check out a pass. The Library is excited to be able to work with area pools to offer this unique service. For more information about the program, call the library at 717-484-4200 ext. 1.
