The featured artisan this week is Joseph B. Lehn (b.

1798 ­ d. 1892) of Elizabeth Township, Lancaster County. Lehn lived on a farm outside of Clay (west of Ephrata) and his work is often called “Lehnware.”

chalices, small children’s cups and saucers and more.

His pieces are nationally recognized in many historical museums and are treasured by many local families as “family heirlooms.” Many of his works have sold for thousands of dollars.

Census records indicate Lehn listed his trade as a cooper from 1860­ 1870 (maker of buckets, kegs, barrels, etc.), but what made his work unique was his elaborate paint decorations.

Lehn made many of his own paints and some were his own special recipe of using natural products, such as onion skins. He had many

patterns of paint accent that he repeated on all types of woodenware. He was well known for his painting themes of strawberry vines, peony or pomegranate floral accent, as well as pussy­ willow banding.

While he used a variety of base paint colors on his works, on some pieces, such as saffron cups, the foot was always painted with same color scheme and the turnings were replicated exactly. In his later years, he was reported to have lost his eyesight and started to use paper “die­cut” decals.

As with many well­ known artisans, there have been many reproductions of Lehn’s work. Some of these similar old pieces were made by people of his own era and some from the early 1900’s to present day. While

some of these reproductions were made to fool potential buyers, some were marked by their makers.

• Thursday, April 23, 6:00 p.m. - Digital Sculpting Class with Zak Straley. Join the library for a unique learning experience. Patrons will learn about 3D modeling in order to create their own digital art. Whether it’s for games, movies, 3D printing, or just a new medium to explore, participants can get started on the road to digital asset creation. Free programs will be recommended in order to participate fully.

Zak Straley has a Bachelor’s degree in Game Art and Design, worked at Epic Games and Imangi Studios, and has been 3D sculpting as a hobby for over 7 years. To join the class, visit the Ephrata Public Library’s Facebook page at the time of the class and there will be a link posted. Free program suggestions will be recommended for download.

Berks History Center - A Tale From The Past The Berks History Center Museum & Research Library are currently closed and will remain closed through the end of April to ensure the health and safety of the community. During this time, the Berks History Center staff is working remotely to continue to share stories like this, through their digital platforms and publications like The Shopping News of Lancaster County.

Hidden in Heidelberg: The Wernersville Train Station Trains have held a certain magic for many people.

Train stations, too, for their arrivals and departures to new, exciting places. All of this nostalgia can be seen and savored at the restored historic Wernersville Train station.

Built in 1927, to replace an earlier station, the little used and dilapidated granite and limestone building was rescued and restored by the Heidelberg Heritage Society. The restoration is authentic; fortunately, the

Society was able to secure such items as the original water fountain, Men’s and Ladies’ room signs, and mail wagon.

The first train of the Lebanon Valley Railroad of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad ran from Reading to Lebanon in 1857; the first passenger train from Reading to Harrisburg in 1858. The establishment of this busy railroad ushered in the successful development of Wernersville and the south mountain resorts. By 1941, passenger trains were making 26 stops a day!

With the ascendency of the automobile, train travel declined and passenger railroad service at the Wernersville Station terminated in June 1963.

What we have now is a beautifully restored train station that brings back all the history and memories of railroading days.

The Wernersville Train Station is one of twelve historic sites on the 2018 4 Centuries in Berks Historic Property Tour, which will explore the architectural treasures of Heidelberg Townships including South

sister, Ruth, wife of Lewis Denlinger, Paradise.

Jeanette H. Weaver, 80, wife of Gene R. Weaver, Ephrata Manor, formerly of Stevens, passed away on Saturday, April 11.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Duane, husband of Lori (Enck) Weaver, Ephrata; a daughter, Cheryl, wife of Bel Santiago, Ephrata; and five grand­ children.

Frederick Ruebman Jr., 79, Manheim, formerly of Lititz, passed away on Sun­ day, April 12.

He was the husband of the late Barbara McCarty.

He is survived by two brothers: Jack, husband of Maudine Reubman, Ma­ bank, Texas, and Jim, hus­ band of Jane Ruebman, Lancaster; and two sisters: Janet, wife of Robert Hill, Lancaster, and Judy, wife of Richard “Dick” Mearig, Lititz.

Phyllis M. Zimmerman, 86, wife of Raymond, Breth­ ren Village, Lititz, passed away on Sunday, April 12.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters: Lee, wife of Robert Murray, Seattle, Washington, and Jere, wife of Dale Zimm­

erman, Reinholds; four grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; and two sisters: Lois, wife of Eugene Hollinger, Lititz, and Anna Bare, Mennonite Home.

She was preceded in death by a great-grandchild.

Landis E. Burkholder, 88, husband of Gladys Hershey Burkholder, New Holland, formerly of Denver, passed away on Monday, April 13.

The First Settlers Of Brecknock County

Excerpt from article titled “Brecknock: How Brecknock Was Named” written by Evans C. Goodling, Jr. Brecknock Township, a rural township of farms and woodland, was established in 1741 as a political subdivision of Lancaster County. It probably received its name at the suggestion of Thomas Edwards, a Welsh immigrant who was one of the first county commissioners of Lancaster County.

chief Brychan or Brechan, who led the eastern Welsh hill country residents in reclaiming the Usk valley from the Romans in the 4th Century AD. David Farmer, in The Oxford Dictionary of Saints, refers to Brychan/ Brechan as a legendary Welsh king who had many saintly children. Several of these saints are said to have settled in Cornwall, where Farmer cites the existence of a stained glass window dedicated to Saint Brechan in the Parish Church of St. Anietus in St. Neot. Shown on the window is the faded image of the saint, holding in his arm some ten children.

However, the persistent tradition that Brecknock Township in Lancaster (and also Berks) County got its name from Welsh settlers is only partly true, because

Thomas Edwards did not actually live in Brecknock Township.

Thomas Edwards was born in Wales in 1673, the eldest of seven children. Thomas arrived in Philadelphia with his family in 1684; by 1715, he, his wife, and their seven children had relocated to Chester County, where he appeared in the assessment list as a Welsh settler. Edwards served as commissioner for the proposed Lancaster County, serving as a magistrate after the county’s establishment and participating in the naming of the first 17 townships — of which Brecknock was not included.

Thomas continued as a magistrate until 1757; he died at the age of 91 in 1764.

obtained the earliest-knownwarrant for land in what is now Brecknock Township, Berks County.

Settlers applied for land warrants in the Brecknock Township area as early as 1734 — John Edwards being the first. John never actually settled on his 400acre tract, however; rather, his original warrant was assigned to Jacob Bowman in December of 1735. At that time, there were eight other warrants issued for land that fell within the boundaries of what was to become Brecknock Township, Berks County. The first warrants on the Lancaster County side of Brecknock Township were obtained on April 27, 1734.

Jacob Bowman’s nephew, also named Jacob, owned as much as 230 acres in Brecknock Township, which he obtained by patent on February 10, 1742. Referred to in family legend as

“Nimrod Jacob” after an Old Testament king, Jacob took over a section of John Edwards’ warrant for 422 acres, which his uncle had been granted on December 20, 1735. The Bowman family soon obtained patents for much of the tract of land originally owned by the Edwards.

The first recorded reference to Brecknock as an organized township is dated January 10, 1740, when the area is mentioned in the Lancaster County assessment lists.

The lack of an official record of the organization of Brecknock makes it difficult to determine from what township it was taken or what the extent of its territory was. It would appear that Brecknock’s boundaries had become established by default — that is, after all of the surrounding townships had taken shape. In 1752, when Berks County was established, the boundary cut through the center of both Caernarvon and Brecknock Townships, with the names being retained for the portions of the townships, which fell on both sides of the new county boundary.

The “Wendell Kitzmiller” letters appeared in the Lebanon Report, later in The Lebanon Daily News. According to Harry Hess Reichard in his 1917 book on Pennsylvania German dialect writings, “in these letters he (Grumbine) has engaged for the most part in laughing out of existence the follies and foibles of his fellow men…laughingly telling the Pennsylvania Germans the truth.”

Abounding Love Author: Wenger Scripture: Philippians 1:9 “And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ.”

Love should be the chief characteristic of the believer.

The Bible clearly teaches that love is preeminent in life and ministry. John declares, “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” We are commanded to love, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12).

How did Christ love? He loved sacrificially. He came to serve, not to be served.

Love is the reason for the cross, “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16). When contrasting eternity (when

we see Christ) with the time (here and now) as Paul speaks of faith, hope, and love he declares, “the greatest of these is love.”

Love is the reason we serve

others. Love is the decision to place the needs of others before ours. Love is a decision. Love should empty us of self. Someone who is in love with self will have no

room for others. Love is never about self…it is always about others. Look at Christ who “emptied himself taking on the form of a servant.” (Philippians 2:7).

Love doesn’t look at people as they are; love sees people as they could be in Christ.

Before Paul declares what love is, he demonstrates that without love, anything we do, however great, will be ineffective. “If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have

Girl Scouts Donate To United Zion United Zion Retirement Community received a call from Elli Miller, the leader of Girl Scout Troop 70246, on Wednesday, March 25. Mrs. Miller called to offer United Zion Retirement Community nearly 100 boxes of Girl Scout cookies for residents and employees caring for a high­risk population during the COVID­19 pandemic.

Troop 70246 was unable to setup their normal stand and sell cookies so they came up with a new method to sell their cookies. They called friends and family asking them to buy and donate the cookies for local retirement communities. Troop 70246 is made up of sixth grade girls in the Warwick School District.

So what is love? God’s love is described in 1 Corinthians 13:4­8. We all have a long way to go to live real love God’s way!

“Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily. It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does

not act unbecomingly. Love (God’s love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self­ seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong]. It does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail.

Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every

person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [with­ out weakening]. Love never fails [never fades out or becomes obsolete or comes to an end].” (1 Corinthians 13:4­8 Amplified Bible).

Love is the greatest, but remember, it’s not all you need. Paul names two guardians of love; know­ ledge and discernment. We will see next week how these two enhance love.

At that time, the City of Reading offered residents several areas around town to start victory gardens, en­ couraging citizens to raise their own vegetables for consumption and conserve farm produce for the war effort. Gardens sprung up all over Reading, from the Hampden and Buttonwood reservoir plots, to the grounds near Sternbergh’s Stirling and Spring and Weiser Streets. Open city blocks, city parks with reservoirs or open land on private property were all made available to Reading residents for rent or free of charge.

Victory Gardens were again promoted by the U.S. government during World War II complementing a country-wide Food Ration­ ing Program in 1942. Victory gardens were widely pro­ moted during 1943 through 1945. However, once the war ended, so did govern­ ment promotions and Amer­ ica’s reliance on victory gardens.

The “Berks History for Victory” campaign is primarily a digital learning experience, with historic images, stories and in­ structional videos released on social media. Two BHC staff will provide videojournals of their home gardening efforts. The BHC hopes to expand the pro­ gram, by installing a small demonstration garden and living exhibit on the grounds of the BHC museum, located at 940 Centre Ave. However, plans to do so are tentative and dependent on the status of the state-wide stay at home order.

The “Berks History for Victory” campaign will complement a “Victory Con­ tainer Garden” initiative led

by District 1 Councilwoman, Lucine Sihelnik. By joining Sihelnik’s District 1 Victory Container Garden taskforce, the BHC will work to cultivate the community food system during the outbreak. Further collab­ orations are expected to grow, as the BHC and the task force encourage all citizens, community organi­ zations, and businesses to get behind the revitalization of home food gardening.

“Victory Gardens are a positive way to feed our community, inspire steward­ ship, and are fruitful eco­ nomically,” says Council­ woman Sihelnik.

The BHC invites families in Reading and Berks County to join them in their campaign to promote local food security during the COVID-19 pandemic by learning about the history of victory gardens and growing their own gardens at home, wherever possible.

As new information emerged and the virus spread from its epicenter in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, to other areas of Asia, Europe and the United States, various world health experts briefed the public on the proper protocol they believed would help stall the spread of this contagious virus.

She always has a brilliant smile on her face and adds laughter to the class.

Some things Jaclyn really likes about school are that she gets to see her friends and gets to do art. She likes art because she can express her feelings. Her favorite kind of art is painting, but painting with water colors is her favorite. In her free time Jaclyn loves drawing and listening to music. Her favorite colors are aqua and coral. Her favorite kind of food is a cheeseburger. Her favorite sport is ice skating.

After graduation Jaclyn plans to go to high school and work at a cafĂŠ or coffee shop. If she could start a business she would start a small cafĂŠ, coffee shop, or a fashion store with modest clothing.

Jaclyn dreams of traveling someday. Two countries she would like to travel to would be France and Spain.

She also likes to spend time with her family and their pets. Jaclyn is the oldest in her family and has one brother and one sister. Her parents are Derrick and Joetta Hoover. One of her most important decisions was to accept Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. If Jaclyn could change anything in the world she would outlaw abortion, because it is not right to kill little unborn babies.

Jack McCarty, a junior at Garden Spot High School, resides in New Holland with his parents, Toni and Tim McCarty, and his sister, Grace. Jack especially enjoys the extracurriculars and social events offered at Garden Spot. He deeply appreciates the school staff and their sacrifice given for student success.

Jack also loves learning and looks forward to his favorite class: AP Art History with Mr. Christopher Epler because of its challenging nature. Jack stays busy with a plethora of extracurriculars, which include National Honor Society, Health Council, and Varsity Boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Volleyball. Additionally, Jack has served as Class President, Secretary of the Grassland FFA Chapter, and Senior Patrol Leader of Boy Scouts of America, Troop #48. Following high school, Jack plans to pursue a degree in Crisis Management and move onto law school to study criminal law. Using this education, he wants to serve our countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s government in some capacity. In Jackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s free time, he enjoys horseback riding, attending school sporting events, spending time with friends and working at Lyons and Hohl on the weekends. Jackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proudest accomplishment, his Courtyard Project at the high school, turned the old courtyard into an outdoor learning center for his classmates. Following the completion of this project, he will receive the rank of Eagle Scout through the Boy Scouts of America. Jack says his project supervisor and FFA Advisor, Mrs. Katherine Ranck, is his biggest inspiration. He is grateful for the countless hours she has spent helping him with his project, applying for grants, and helping him to build his future. When asked what he would change about the world, Jack states that he wants more unity and feels that with more unity, the world would be a better place. We can expect great things from Jack McCarty in the near future!
