When Bonita (Bonnie) Abshire thinks back over what will soon be 70 years of marriage, she wonders how she and her husband James (Jim), whom she affectionately refers to as her “Honey,” made it through. Jim attributes their success to luck and cooperation. Bonnie and Jim were living in Three Rivers, Michigan when they met as teenagers. They were married on March 11, 1951. They eventually moved to Lancaster County and established their home in Akron, where they resided for over 50 years until moving to Keystone Villa just over a year ago. Jim and Bonnie raised two children, Janice (Jan) Vinson, wife of Donald E. Vinson of Akron, and James E., husband of Deborah Abshire,

Ray and Peggy Enck of Akron attribute their 65 year marriage to remaining devoted to their marriage vows and staying together, even during ups and downs through the years. New Holland. They are the grandparents of Keri Jo, wife of Patrick McHugh; James D. Vinson; Erin, wife of Michael Martin; and Teri L. Vinson. They have five greatchildren: Liam, Fionn, Kath leen, Payton and Cameron. As parents, they were united. When disagreements arose, they worked them out in private and responded as a team. Communication was key for the Abshires. They frequently wrote each other notes and left them around the house.

Mellingers Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stevens by Pastor Minnich. After marriage, they lived in Ephrata and Akron while raising their family. Ray and Peggy are the parents of four children: Jay Enck, husband of Shirley; Sylvia Boyer, wife of Jay; Renee Gehman; and Lori Weaver, wife of Duane. They have also been blessed by eight grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren and one greatgreatgrandchild. Ray worked as an auto mechanic for many years, retiring from Geoff Penske Buick GMC in 2007. Peggy retired from the former Getty Mart in Ephrata in 2005. From 1999 until 2019, Peggy enjoyed being coowner of Peggy and Renee’s Fired Art Studio in Akron. Ray was also involved in different aspects of the business, including making pottery and woodworking. (Continued On Page 10A)

Their family has grown to include nine grandchildren: Joe Heller, Kurt Heller, Elliott Heller, Colleen Heller, Shannon Martin, Brett Graybill, Samantha Johnson, Kayla Weaver and Olivia Fassnacht; and five greatgrand children: Reed, Kyle, Luke, Owen and Drew Heller, and Nora Johnson.
When Art and Mary Belle Graybill met as skating partners at an ice show in Harrisburg, she “swept him off his feet!” Ice skating was an activity they have shared throughout their 67 years of marriage, along with skiing and golf. The two were married on November 21, 1953 at the Landisville Church of God. Marybelle, originally from Salunga, and Art still reside on the Stevens farm that has been in the Graybill family since 1901. After growing up on the family farm, Art, along with his wife and brothers, Irvin and Donald, opened Triple G Farms in Stevens. Ephraim & Mabel Hernley 1951 Ephraim Hernley was a young teenager when he met his future wife Mabel at Mount Joy Mennonite Church Bible School. Though they were too young to date at the time, Ephraim remembered her when he got older. Now, they are both 89 years old and will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary this fall. After their October 13, 1951 wedding, they moved to the Hernley
family farm near Elizabethtown, where they lived for 30 years. Their son took over the farm when they built a new home near Mount Joy. After 32 years in that home, the couple moved to Fairmount Homes 7 years ago. The couple raised five children: Pat, wife of John Martin, Lancaster; Bernie, husband of Barb Hernley, Elizabethtown; Rosene, wife of David Rohrer, Raleigh, North Carolina; Duane, husband of Lucy Hernley, Elizabethtown; and Karen, wife of Joel Hess, Mount Joy. They are the grandparents of Christina, wife of Eric Junga; Kenton, husband of Courtney Martin; Aaron Hernley; Kara Hernley; Valerie Hernley; Dustin, husband of Lisa Roher; Ben, husband of Kelsey Hernely; Daniel Hernley; and David Spayde. They also have five great grandchildren: Ila, Oak and Bea Rohrer; and Rheya and Elliana Hernley. (Continued On Page 10A)
