John (Jake) & Ruth Bare 1952
Ruth (Ranck) from Strasburg met Jake Bare from Bird-in-Hand through friends. Now both 90 years old, it has been over 70 years since they were married at Ruth’s home. After marriage, Ruth and Jake lived in Bird-in-Hand. They now reside at Fairmount in Ephrata. The couple has enjoyed traveling during their marriage, including many trips throughout the United States and abroad. They also enjoyed many times spent in Ocean City, New Jersey. Jake and Ruth had three children: D. Edward Bare, Diane Raymond and Sandra Clark. Over the years, their family has grown to include nine grandchildren: Josh Bare and Joel Bare of Bird-in-Hand; Jennifer Snyder of Lititz;

Harry and Barb Fetter met on a blind date set up by Harry’s sister Peggy. Peggy’s matchmaking was a success – the couple was married on April 10, 1960 at Mellinger’s Lutheran Church in Schoeneck, when Harry was 20, and Barb was 19. This year, Harry will be turning 83, Barb will turning 81,

HOMETOWN HEROES
Mark & Alice Yoder 1949 Church has been fundamental in the lives of Alice and Mark Yoder. They first met at Saturday evening Weaverland youth meetings. Now married over 72 years, Mark and Alice say that always going to church was one of the things that contributed to the success of their marriage. In addition to attending church, Mark served as deacon for 16 years. Mark is originally from Morgantown, while Alice hailed from Bowmansville. After getting married at the Alice’s home, the couple lived on a farm near Morgantown. Mark, 95, and Alice, 94, now reside at Fairmount in Ephrata.

On February 15, 1958, Ken Zell married the girl next door. Shirley had been his neighbor since the fourth grade. Next week, the couple will celebrate the 64th anniversary of their marriage, which took place in Ephrata by the late Rev. F.S. Lewis. Though they now live in the Gretna Springs

and they will be celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary. Harry was originally from the Reinholds/ Denver area. Barb’s family was from the Ephrata/Denver area. The couple lived in Denver when they first married, before moving to their current home in Schoeneck in 1961. The Fetters are the proud parents of three children: Brian, of Akron; Karen, of Reinholds; and Debbi, of Denver. Their family also includes five grandchildren: Travis, Adamstown; Ashley, Reinholds; Nicholas, Lititz; Vanessa, South Royalton, Vermont; and Valerie, Philadelphia. They currently have two great-grandchildren, Weston and Emma, with a third due in August. In addition to their growing family, they also (Continued On Page 2A)
One of the couple’s favorite activities throughout their marriage has been traveling. The Yoders are the parents of four children. The family has grown over the years to now include 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Their advice to those starting out is simple: live together, and have children.

In addition to following the examples of their parents, the Bares credit the success of their marriage to the importance of church in their lives. Their advice for young couples is to love, respect, be patient, forgive, learn from the tough times, and have God in your lives.

Adult Community, they spent most of their lives in Akron, where Ken was originally from. Shirley’s family was from Ephrata. After they got married, the couple lived in Akron until 2005, before relocating. Now age 82 and 81 respectively, Ken and Shirley have watched their family grow over the years. They are the proud parents of seven children: Teri Goshert, Ephrata; Sandi Zell, Talmage; Tom Zell, Akron; Patti Rockwell, Quarryville; Tammy Ruth, Akron; Tim Zell, Lebanon; and Penny Schlott, Brickerville. The family also now includes 11 grandchildren: Stephanie Goshert, Sarah Goshert, Charli Clifford, Katie Zell, Mitchell Zell, Justin Rockwell, Nathan Rockwell, Josh Ruth, Owen Zell, Alyssa Harris and Nick Schlott; and six (Continued On Page 3A)
